Nice combat, nice game-play, very nice graphic, next-gen game.
But all of that, can't be compared to the story.
The story is fully disrespecting the player and the first game. Forcing the player to play the most hated character is not something people wanted to in a game. if the story was mediocre, i would love to rate this to 7 or 8 because of all the combat, game-play, and graphics.

The character we've been waiting years to see died within the first 2 hours, and its like the game laughs at us. Abby was a completely annoying, obnoxious, sloppy, terrible character to play and go against. She kills off our favorite character, Dina (in whom was pregnant) she nearly gets killed, Jesse dies, and Tommy almost dies. The ending itself is in a whole different realm of disappointing, lame, and boring. Making everything seem like it was all for nothing. 2/10 DO NOT BUY THIS GAME! Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. In 2020, there is so much going on. I just want to enjoy a good game, but instead, TLOU 2 gave me a nightmare.
This is a great disappointment. I am a big fan of Naughty Dog studio since Uncharted 1,2,3 & 4 as well as Last of us. The whole development team from Last of us part 2 seems don't understand the core success of the first game. It's not about gameplay, its about the characters and story. In part 2, they decided to throw them all away; characters are disposable for the sake of the story. If Naughty Dog is so confident about their game, why didn't they promote Abby in the first place and let us know that we will be controlling Ellie and Abby in this game? The answer is simple; they know the reason why we bought this game, coz we wanna see more interaction between Joel and Ellie. So they decided to give us a fake trailer and lure us into buying this piece of garbage. I know Joel will die, but the way you treat him is unacceptable. And still, try so hard to make Abby likable and sympathy her. AGAIN, I don't care about her. No matter how hard ND tries, I still won't like Abby. Even you gave her better weapons, better gameplay. Sorry, I just can't relate to her or what so ever.
The beauties of the first game are characters driven the story, but in part 2 is story-driven characters, which led to unreasonable action for different characters, such as Joel, Ellie, and Tommy. Naughty Dog, please stop finding excuses for yourself. We, gamers, do not care about your PC stuff. If you can get us a good story, none of that matters. I hope ND can learn from this mistake and bring us more good games in the future. I still have hope for you, please don't let me down.

And what it does get right, it gets stunningly, remarkably right, on a level never paralleled before in video games, and that achievement dominates.

This game takes you to an emotional place. It may not be a place you wanted to go. It's almost like going through a rough break-up. Yeah, it sucks, but on the plus side, you find listening to your favorite songs is moving you like it hasn't in years. Evoking that kind of emotion through a video game is...well, when's the last time anyone has pulled that off? Has it been done before EVER?

There are flaws. The pacing in the middle feels off. The game is long, and it's mechanics get redundant. It doesn't at all feel neat and streamlined. On the story side, some things have all the subtlety of a sledgehammer, and other things require thought to make sense. It's arguable that one line of dialogue, or some different editing, could solve the puzzle to making this a smoother experience in some places.

...but there are no major 'plot holes'. Please don't let people tell you there are. Most everything people evoke as one, is either a character flaw, or them missing explanations that are there in the game. Plus, realize that if you want to dislike a piece of media, it's very easy to find reasons to do it. The original Star Wars movie has more weak writing, bad acting, and questionable elements than this game does, but people love it and buy into it because they like the fantasy world it sells them, and enjoy going along. This game, in parts, is deliberately telling you things you don't want to hear, and challenging you with them. Some people did not enjoy that, and even went so far as to reject the maker's intentions in doing so.

There are some people that will never be happy with the choices this game makes, or what it wants to be instead of what they wanted it to be. Fan service it is NOT. But so many people have not been able to get this game out of their heads. It's inspired more discussion, fascination, and dwelling in its space than the first game did, and maybe more than any game ever has. It's something pretty much never tried before in a AAA video game. I'm happy it exists, and I'm happy I experienced it. If you want a more generic third-person shoot-em-up, you have 1000 other titles to choose from. This is something else, and possibly something landmark and special. Time will tell.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Ok, almost done with my 2nd playthrough..but I've seen the ending maybe eight times by now..so I get the idea.

    Negatives first:

1.) I've seen some others say this and I agree..this should have been Last of Us 3..if there was going to be such a thing. I can deal with Joel meeting a similar fate..but ALL of these new characters should have been built up way more prior.

Flashbacks and perspective absolutely does help..but having them not come across as random people would have been much better in the justification for such a BOLD move, imo!

It's not just Abby, who has some redeemable qualities like so many others say..it's not..but she could have been given way more personality.

Now, maybe they'll fill in the blanks with the show that's due out. Maybe, maybe not and while I PERSONALLY like/agree with the ending..they didn't do themselves a lot of favors to the general fan.

2.) The dogs. Game-wise..it's a good tactic..but I'd rather they just kept using mines..or turrets..or cameras. Yeah, that's generic as hell...but generic beats me having to kill any more of them. Bravo to the dog that was mo-capped for this, btw!

3.) How Tommy/Joel were initially trapped.

It would have made a lot more sense if Abby was actually the one that saved them..and then they had to follow her to where she was staying.

Whether you agree with what Joel did was 'right'/justified..that's up to you..but they DID save her.
Also..I would have liked to hear ANY back/forth between her/Joel about the elephant in the room.
    Same with Ellie/Abby..but especially Joel/Abby.
    ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
    Everything else was GREAT.

The combat is SO MUCH better, visuals, the flashbacks were extremely well done, sfx/voices/music, graphics. The photomode was nice..all the new random options were fantastic.

You can change the controls (which I didn't) is always a plus

The new factions were cool..especially the seraphites.

The ending...a lot of people wanted VENGEANCE. Well, what was killing Abby going to do and more importantly..do you think Joel would want her to do that? Why'd she go there at all you say?
Well, she obviously felt one thing and her mind was eventually changed at the end. No one else has done that before?

Also...if he had to do it all over again..I know he said he'd do just that..but I don't know..maybe knocking them out or pushing the doctors out of the way would have been a smarter move on his part?

Anyways...I do not think Joel would want Ellie to finish Abby. No matter how much hate she has..how much hate you might have for her..and again..just projecting here..but for how much Joel is shown to be softened in all the flashbacks..I just don't see it.

Others said it should have been a choice to kill Abby. Well, that wouldn't really work if Abby/Lev were the main characters in TLOU 3 (which I wouldn't recommend (at this point))?!
    ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Basically..I think this game/story will age a lot better once the show is out (to a varying degree).

Underdeveloped/seemingly random characters and dogs..those are my issues (currently).

Oh and the stadium the Wolves are at...don't know if it was the Huskies/Seahawks..that looked INCREDIBLE.

... and nice job of hiding all the cards/coins!

    ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
In closing..this story is ALL about perspective. Who is the hero? Who is the villain? If this person does that thing to that person..does it catch up to that person 15 years from now in that way..or this way? Was that person justified? If not, why not?

It did a great job creating/furthering the conversation and I appreciate that. There are no villains..no heroes..just the person/people you empathize with more than the other. 8.25 out of 10

Punishing in many ways, no doubt. But it was absolutely thrilling. I finished it last night and it well deserves the praise it gets from critics. Literary essays could be written about this story and its characters. The way the game forced me to switch perspectives and view certain characters and moral viewpoints directly through the gameplay was unlike any game I've played. Many people hate this aspect. They hate that they're made to sympathize with the enemy. I get that feeling. It's uncomfortable, and a desire rises up to reject the game on those grounds. But if you can get passed that knee-jerk reaction, you will come to realize that the story is better for the controversial choices made.

Another complaint I've heard is that this is just a cliche story about revenge. But that's missing the nuance. This story is about perspective. It is about perspective within the context of revenge, and by focusing on perspective an entirely different story and gameplay experience is created, one in which the player, if taking an evenhanded view, is not entirely sure for whom they are rooting. Nobody in this story has the moral high ground. They're all damaged, and the damage done to them perpetuates a cycle. These characters are complex, both the protagonists and antagonists, and this game wants to us to experience their complexities in deep, unsettling ways—ways in which we as players might learn lessons to apply to the real world. But you have to see through your own expectations of the game to truly appreciate what the developers have done here.

I've read and seen video reviews from irate fans, and while I understand their perspective I couldn't disagree more with much of their gripes. This may not be the story that some wanted, but it is not a bad story by any stretch of the imagination. It is a natural evolution from the first game's story and themes, and it directly deals with the repercussions of the characters' actions. It makes perfect sense. Some fans argue that the characters do no act like they would in the first game and that this leads unjustifiably to the inciting incident that kicks things off. Thus the inciting incident doesn't ring true. I feel these fans are, again, missing the nuance, the nuance of the situation the characters find themselves in. These fans can't accept that our supposed heroes are capable of being forced into an untenable situation that could end badly. The world built in these games is not a world built for happy endings. Our heroes may not be the heroes we think they are from a certain perspective.

Then there's the LGBTQ representation. Yes, we have a lesbian couple. They kiss and cuddle. Is it over the top? pandering? Absolutely not. There is no agenda. The story just happens to have two women who fall for each other like any man and woman might. You know, like in real life. Their relationship is central to the story, but not on the basis of it being a lesbian relationship. Maybe two moments occur in the entire game that addresses bigotry. They're small aspects, and they're realistic and fleeting. The story moves on. But you know what? I shouldn't have to make excuses like saying that these moments are fleeting and thus not a big deal. Bigotry happens in real life. People experience it. Showing it in a game or depicting people who experience it shouldn't be an issue. Ever. I repeat, it's not an agenda. It's real life. There could be an argument that Naughty Dog played up the lesbian relationship in marketing. But that's not the game. Move on.

As for the gameplay, it's very recognizable to the first game. It's better in many ways with more variety, and it's very fluid. If you loved the first game's gameplay and didn't get tired of it then you'll love the gameplay here, even more so. As a player you are gently eased into learning skills as the game progresses. As things ramp up you never feel left behind, but gameplay remains intense. Intense is the best way to describe the combat. The music feeds into this feeling. It's very satisfying, but disturbing.

This game is much longer than the first. My campaign was around 40 hours. I explored as many nooks and crannies as possible (but still didn't find everything) and really took in the beautiful scenery. The graphics are jaw-dropping. I will admit that at some points there was some repetitiveness. Scavenging can get a little old, especially toward the end. But the detailed environments always make exploration fun. The combat and stealth components and level designs allow for a variety of ways to approach every situation. I played it on the default difficulty and died a few times here and there. I imagine on harder difficulty levels that precise strategy becomes very important and will add to the game's replay value.

I couldn't recommend this game more highly.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I can’t believe I waited 4 years only to not play as Ellie! Who on earth thought it would be enjoyable to play as Abby, why on earth would we want to play as the character we hate? Also she is the most lifeless character I’ve ever seen in any game. I bought the game to continue the story from the first one, you literally called it part 2 to continue Joel and Ellie’s story, last time I checked Abby wasn’t in part 1, and speaking of the story who on earth wrote that, you tried to replicate the relationship between Joel and Ellie with Abby and Lev and that did not work at all as both Abby and Lev are such terrible and uninteresting characters. Also what on earth was that ending we didn’t even get to kill Abby! Why would you let her live, or at least give us a choice to kill her or spare her. This game was supposed to be about Ellie why weren’t we told anything about her backstory with her Mum? Why didn’t we see Ellie first meeting Marline? Why did we play as Joel’s killer? Whoever thought that was a good idea for the story should be fired. This game has terrible story structure, and the game overall was way too long.

The gameplay was great I really liked the dodge mechanic that was an outstanding feature, and I love that you can change the reticule to a simple dot as I didn’t really like the old one in the first game, the combat system was great too a good selection of weapons. Gameplay was overall great.

The desperation of these characters is wonderfully drawn in this brutal unforgiving world. A world so detailed and well built, full of hateful, nuanced people on the edge of survival. I loved Joel as a character, and was as devastated as anyone, but I think it’s the perfect catalyst for this story, and the writing team should be applauded for an extremely brave writing choice. ND took a risk, by killing a main character, but boy did it pay off. Although there may have been slight pacing issues, the story being told was excellent. Being able to see the other side of Ellie’s story: ie Abby was imo great. Just a final heads up: the user reviews were reviewed bombed by people to childish to accept Joel’s death or the fact that not all the characters are straight white males. This game is worth 10/10. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I want to start by saying what I did enjoy about the game; visually, this game is ways ahead of anything I’ve seen on this system, it’s crazy to think what it would’ve looked like on next gen. Attention to detail on shading, lighting, combat, it was top tier. The first 13 hours of this game we’re magnificent. They did a good job at not making anything feel stale as tome went by, rewarded players who tirelessly loot, and reconnected with that Last of Us feel where at times the character you love makes rash decisions that you’re just along with for the ride. Okay now that that’s out of the way, let’s move on to the cluster **** and **** show that is the writing. By now it’s no surprise anymore that we have to extensively play as Brock Lesnar... I mean Abby, the baby silverback gorilla who violently murders Joel. Throughout Abbys gameplay it’s clear there are two motives the devs are trying to shove down your throat; 1) the whole perspective of Joel’s murder, therefore seeing the events that transpired through Abby’s eyes. 2) in that, there is a feeling they are trying to force you to sympathize and forgive Abby as a player. Now all jokes aside, it’s something they had all the elements to almost pull off but execution was subpar. They have you jump into her shoes after killing one of the only two likable new characters. And 30 minutes after being given the reigns to Abby’s lenses, they show you Joel’s murder again. I understand the point was to show how she had a motive debatably as real as Ellie’s. But the problem with it (as is apparent throughout the story) is that the portrayal shows little emotion of lack of satisfaction having accomplished her goal, or questioning of self motives or decisions as is apparent when Ellie commits similar acts. Then toward the end of Abby’s completely dragged out campaign they force you to nearly kill Ellie, beating her severely and almost killing Dina. Granted, this is after Abby discovers Ellie murdered a number of her companions. But again. As a player I didn’t give a single f**k about any of those deaths because the story failed to have me connect with Abby. I understand but I didn’t care. They did all of this after you see her murder a beloved character. Best analogy I can give us this: if your father or any other family member was mercilessly murdered and tortured in front of you, by someone who’s life he had saved 1 hour ago, you WOULD NOT CARE about his killers background or motives. Even if you discovered your father killed the others years ago. And that’s the fundamental problem. Joel wasn’t a messiah or prefect or by any means a great man. But I’m connected to him and have a love for him and Ellie. So no matter wtf is said or done I can understand but I’m not gonna care about Abby or forgive her. Even though I’ve already spoiled aspects of the game I won’t spoil the exact details of the very end. But it was so anticlimactic and unnecessary. The game could’ve ended a hour or two earlier when Tommy visited the farm, and could’ve conveyed that Ellie learned the same lesson or finally reached the deeper understanding. Without losing everything. Or even after the kitchen scene before California, and that whole section could’ve been a part of Part 3 and expanded upon it. But no. All it did was kind of frustrate and confuse the life out of players. To wrap this up, again I say, I think this game has all of the scenes and elements to be a great game. To really convey the message and meaning they are trying to. But the execution was simply lack luster, ineffective, and drawn out. Caused by a multitude of things from forced agendas (i.e. Ellie kill dog = she’s bad. Abby save Zebra = she’s good) to poorly placed scenes and encounters that, if rotated around, could better tell the story. NOTE: I did just finish the game a few hours ago. We all know that given time our perspectives can change. So in a week I may see some bigger picture and think this falls more in the 6 or 7 range, or I may “dig my heels in the ground” and have my stance affirmed. These are my opinions. The only way to know for sure is to play for yourself. Just rent it. Or wait for a price drop. Expand

After all, if it's ok for 70 out of of 100 journalists/churnalists to give it a perfect score then i guess it's ok to give it the lowest possiblle score. That's what happens when you don't play fair.

The story is good but I think the narrative fails because unlike in previous Naughty Dog games the new characters aren't iconic ones. So you don't take too much attention to them and don't care about them, because you want to know what happens after the cliffhanger that happens just before this long flashback. I mean, this part isn't bad but it may have been better if way shorter or shown most of it in another place of the game, altering the current order of the game. And something that isn't good or bad, but just a personal opinion: I don't understand why they took such an effort to make ugly all an unattractive the new female characters specially when compared to their actresses.
Other than, every other thing of the game is really awesome. Really awesome in terms of visuals, gameplay, animation, cinematics, IA, action, stealth, etc.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. First of all, despite everything, I still love the game, and the overall story. I do agree that there are flaws in the story, but most of them are explainable: like why Abby killed Joel even after he saved her, why she risked her life and betrayed WLF to save Yara and Lev, why Joel let his guard down, why Ellie let Abby go, etc. They are all **explainable**. It's just that the story can be told in a better way, or maybe a different story might be better. However, all in all, I still think TLOU2 is a good game, it deserves better.

I think TLOU (1, 2) are not just games. It's also stories, stories that one can have a more immerse experience, but not something one can control except the author. I value the experience, and emotion shocks the stories gave me. I think this game should be looked at from an audience's perspective, and one should at least try to understand the idea behind the story. Tragedies can also be good story.

I don't agree with everything in the story, but I respect it. I also waited years for the game, I think it still worth the investment I gave it, financially and emotionally. It definitely is not a 10 point game, but I'd still give it a 10 because I don't think it should be less than 7. I would still want to know the future story of Ellie and, very importantly, Abby. I want more TLOU.

Lastly, regarding the trailers, the misleading trailers, those are low, really low.

Any story line would be a better one. I don’t know what writer thought. Neil, for his own purpose, has destroyed what Bruce and the others created before. He should quit and banned as a writer for games because he is a poison for this area. And he should stop using a lot of things as his shield. Strongly not recommended. The the ending is unbelievably depressing and the player is left feeling very unsatisfied, which might have actually been the point. Whether it was the point or not doesn't matter though, the ending just makes you feel like crap and that's never a good thing. Mechanics, graphics and gameplay-wise the game was solid, much better than the original, but the story just isn't there. Killing off most of the favorite characters and leaving others with nothing is NOT a good way to achieve depth. The hope we were left with at the end of the first game is nonexistent at the end of this one. I expected much more, and much better from a studio like Naughty Dog. Expand

Things happened in the game that make Ellie go on her revenge tour and they need to happen. The gameplay although not greatly changed is brilliant. In terms of movement of character and character abilities, there isn’t much you can change as they are not super natural but Ellie moves faster than Joel and is more athletic which does to lead to come good movement momentum moments. Being able to dodge, go prone, again although small in the greater picture do so much to freshen up game play. I would have loved to have seen some type of gameplay involved with the rope physics. That could have used to make traps if you carried a rope around with you. You could place it on the group to trip NPC’s. You could place it between doors at neck height, attract the infected to run into it and trap them. It’s a one time use as once it’s triangled you’ll need to retrieve it kind of thing. The world they have created is beautifully horrific. Dilapidated buildings, overgrown friends it’s just stunning. The sound design is all time great. Rain splashes, gunshots, voice active it’s a masterclass on immersion.

The only moment in the game where I actually felt disgusted is 3/4 of the way through the game when things come together, you are forced into a fight that NOBODY would ever want to be in. It’s does give you some insight into how your opponent actually fights but it’s just so hard.

This game is a masterpiece in gameplay and eliciting emotion for the player.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I played all through TLOU2 and I genuinely liked it a lot. Its not as fresh or new as the originals, so I already feel like it has that part going against it, but overall as an experience I enjoyed it, and I found the differences between Abby and Ellie interesting.

I still think that if anyone hadn't seen the spoilers and didn't have their opinions of the game warped by the "rational anti-sjw" YouTubers, it would easily be better received and people would actually think for themselves. Even if some ideas of representation came off repulsive to people who get that upset by that kind of stuff, I believe it would be easier to brush off for that crowd. I personally liked Ellie's relationship with Dina, even if I feel Dina lacked some background in some areas, but what I found to like about her was that Ellie, even with all the **** shes gone through, had someone that she could love and be comforted by who accepted her for who she was, and I genuinely found that endearing. What I liked about Abby was that she was essentially a representation of what Ellie COULD have become. She got her revenge, and when she was given the chance to back down from Ellie and spare Dina, she did, even after all the **** that Ellie had gone through. In the end I actually believe Abby went through even WORSE circumstances than Ellie did, yet she decided to move forward and not be consumed by hate anymore, while Ellie couldn't even live with herself anymore and her entire identity became engulfed in rage and hatred, letting it get the best of her and her friends.

The game was clearly trying something different here that isn't normally done in story driven games, and while I was strongly opposed to playing a different side of the story, I grew to empathize with Abby and appreciate her arc as a character, and see how contrasted with Ellie. They're both different sides of the same coin. Both characters basically broke even, yet both processed their tragedies differently. Given that the theme of TLOU2 is "hate", I would say it does an excellent job of portraying it. Instead of Ellie choosing to move on, she chose to seek revenge. Instead of choosing to be happy, she chose to let the anger consume her, leaving her with nearly nothing left, but the smoldering ruins of her life. I wished the best for Ellie as well, and I can see how people are disappointed in the ending sequence, but I honestly was fond of the message it was trying to promote. Revenge sounds like a sweet prize in videogames, but in this scenario that tries to mimic reality, it is a often a hollow victory .

Id have to give the game an 8/10. It's trying something different that falls short in some aspects, but I respect what its doing and in many ways succeeds at it. People who are giving this game 3's and below while pretending to be "honestly giving their opinion" are just trying to veil their short sighted anger, while having the entire experience already ruined for them because some "anti-PC redpilled" youtuber told them that you're an idiot for liking this game. Almost no triple A games deserve ratings as low as a 3, and ESPECIALLY a game as polished as TLOU2. Even if the games story was as **** **** as people claim it to be, it would still deserve a MINIMUM of a 6 out of 10 for the level of detail and fidelity it has poured into it.

I cant convince anyone otherwise of how to view the game because it feels that anyone who even browses YouTube has had their perception so monumentally **** up to the point that there is no discussion to be had. They just see the game's leaks where you see everything completely unexecuted and left to the imagination, and then hear about it from someone online who wants to call it "SJW trash" and it will immediately be subject to the worst possible lens of skepticism and reviews. If everyone in this game were a bunch of straight white dudes, nobody would give a **** and maybe the only thing that people would criticize was that the story goes a bit too long.

8/10 for me, and to someone who dislikes the game, a 6/10 MINIMUM under any circumstance.

The Last Of Us Part 2.

Sure, some argues that the story is lackluster. However, I don't think the game as a whole deserves such a low score. Most of these commenters didn't even play the game. My advice is to not listen to them and decide for yourself by playing the game.

The gameplay is a great step up from the original, with tense, fluid gameplay in some seriously anxiety inducing encounters.

I think if I was to have any criticisms, it would be that at some minor points it does drag a little too long, which is a similar criticism I had to some points of Uncharted 4, but I don’t think this is enough to bring it down from a 10 at all.

10/10 doesn’t mean perfect, it never has and never will. If that was the case, no game would ever be allowed to receive a 10/10, as no game is truly perfect, not even the original The Last of Us.

A genuine masterpiece in my eyes, with a brilliant story, top tier graphics and animations, and tense, engaging combat and stealth mechanics.

Coming from a fan of the first game... I loved the original. I'm gay, so there's not "Omg a lesbian!??!" ... I don't know anyone actually annoyed with that. Ellie has always been a lesbian, and it was presented in a non dead-horse beating sort of way in the original game. People's issue with the LGBT stuff in the game, is mostly to do with how people outside of the game are parading it around and dismissing criticism by just calling everyone bigots lol. As a gay dude, I get annoyed when gay characters get shoved in people's faces, and used as marketing and virtue signaling. It's lame. That aside... this new story really takes a big dump on the fans. I'm expected to play as a character that kills one of the beloved original characters? No thanks. Whoever thought that was a good idea, needs to lose their job. Gross. There's not even closure for that crap. It all just annoys me to no end.

Anyone giving this game a 0, through 3... isn't honest. Anyone giving it a 8-10... is either not honest, or isn't a fan of the original game. That's my take on those scores anyway.

    ________
I really want to rate this game higher.. The game is incredibly atmospheric and customizable for how you want to play it - have a true survival experience or breeze through the game as if it was nothing. a ton of accessibility options, the best I've seen to date. Lots of eye candy. Definitely for mature audiences only.

    The good:
    ________
Gameplay felt really good, I liked the crafting and upgrade system and the fact that you had to explore to get resources and improve your skill tree. Several collectibles, which, I will give you points for ingame unlocks of some artwork and concept art along with some behind the scenes insights. Some of the puzzle mechanics were really nice, rope puzzles made me feel a little creative. and combat felt tactical and stealthy. There are times when it does give you a fair amount of action gunplay to change the pace, but I felt like it was almost my choice of how to approach each step. Cut scenes are skipabble and are completely seamless between each encounter/puzzle and gives you complete immersion while telling the story.

    The critique:
    _________
I really wish we had gotten an ending where we could have just somehow sided with one or the other character getting their sweet revenge. I thought the story was okay, after reading many reviews from other players and fans of the original, I understand their unhappiness with some of the character's actions. Its a game thats meant to shock your system as much as possible and prove a point. Its cool to have 2 completely different, badass girl characters and very different perspectives. I wish you could replay the game just from one or the other's characters perspective, and have an "alternate" ending where you actually go through with the revenge kill at the end. My first impressions of the game were actually very positive, I couldn't put the controller down, it was captivating. I would say that some of the story/ending felt a bit dragged towards the end or maybe a little incomplete even. They really really tried to one up on their previous TLOU title and they *almost* made it. Unfortunately, the way the game ended was a complete downer after making you go through a large amount of adrenaline-packed gameplay. It has some replay value, so there's that, too.

If you haven't played the original, this game will definitely blow you away.

I will say that the first game is probably my 2nd favorite game of all time, so following that is no easy task. The artists at ND are really at the top of their craft here. In my opinion you should it on the hardest difficulty you can bear to really emphasize the desperation inherent in the game's world. You can always lower the difficulty in game if it's too much. I'm very glad I chose Survivor for my first playthrough, it wasn't nearly as punishing as the first game on Grounded difficulty, but it was still a proper challenge.

No part of my 30 hours with the game felt unnecessary, it all felt in service of the story Naughty Dog wanted to tell and I think they pretty much stuck the landing. It's not perfect, but I think it can stand as a worthy sequel to the masterpiece that was Part 1. Overall, I think this game will polarize fans, but you can count me squarely in the "loved it" group.

I was so disgusted by Joel’s death and I intensely wanted Abby dead. As soon as you play as her I knew they would try and make me have empathy for her. I didn’t think it was possible but I eventually grew to like her to the point I no longer wanted her dead. Think about it, if there was no TLOUS 1 or backstory to Joel or Ellie then people would hate them for they did to Abby. I’m glad Ellie let go before the acts she committed destroyed her completely. I do wish that Ellie found some kind of happiness and meaning in the end though and I hope that’s the focus if there’s a DLC or continuation of the story Expand

Expand

The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly:

    * The Good: The visuals of this game are breathtaking. The animations are mostly great. And while the core of gameplay is the same as the first game, there are noticeable improvements.

    * The Bad: This game ignores the fact that most people interested in it are 'the fans of the first game'. The pacing of the story is what I would only describe as 'weird on mushrooms'. And some major characters and their personalities are retconned in a big way.

    * The Ugly: The story is very clearly doctored to force-feed certain ideologies and beliefs and stereotypes which are different from the first game. Thing is, pushing ideas through the gaming medium happens all the time, but it is insulting when established characters of the prequel have to morph so they can fit the new narrative.

    Summary:
The visuals and the technical merits of the game make it really hard to score it below 5 out 10. But the story and pacing of it deeply wound the experience.
As a good friend of mine said, "I'd rate the story of this game, 2 lost fingers out of 10."
Also, as a side note, Naughty Dog games used to be on my list of 'buy without any questions'. After this game, they no longer are.

I'd always say "wow I think I have a lot of ammo" and then nope, never enough unless I had some extreme precision. Enemy AI is dastardly too.

Story pacing and narrative issues are present, but opposite of the review bombing, I'm going to have to ignore it. Would've said like an 8 or 9, but this is a 10 out of spite. The gameplay and visuals are so awesome, only bigots would cry on user reviews with 0s talking about "propaganda"

I think there are a lot of bad reviews because people were expecting the story to go in a specific direction, and expectations like that can be damaging. I think the story is dark, sad, and complex. If you're looking for a story that will cheer you up, this is not the video game for you. I judge the game on what it is and my experience playing it rather than being distracted by the way it was marketed (which some people are using to criticise the actual game) and how the audience was deceived through trailers and so on. This game is a very real representation of trauma, loss and how to cope with emotions similar to this within an already collapsed society. Having Joel's death be out of no where, shocking and unceremonious is considered cheap by some, however most people know this is how death is in the real world, more often than not. In a world as real as this, I was not surprised at the manner that these events unfolded in and the pain you feel from this loss puts you in the head space that Ellie is in. She has no time to be funny and light hearted after this experience and she remains changed forever. Another criticism this game faces is how "it ruins Ellie" as a character. How can Ellie be expected to remain the sarcastic, bubbly 14 year old from the first game after all she has to endure through both games and for the majority of her life? As a more mature young adult, Ellie is visibly scarred from the trauma she has faced and understandably so. By the end, she is so overcome with the ongoing conflict in her head when she lets Abby live. The real emotion that this game draws out of you is immense, and any form of art that can invoke emotions as vividly as The last of us part II does, should be considered in my eyes, as a masterpiece.
