Invested from beginning to end, I spent an arduous and emotional six days to complete it. It proved my theories that video games are the future medium for entertainment. In a world where movies have grown stagnant and television has taken over, there’s nothing like experiencing a story you’re actually a part of.

In a game like this, it’d be cheap and ill-fitting to give the player choice. And I say this as a person who had difficulty pressing the square button a few times during it. Giving us choice takes away from the narrative and sticking to the narrative doesn’t feel like you’re not in control. It’s a matter of preference, as with everything, but for me, I’m satisfied with every part of it and am on a NG+ run through as we speak, noticing different things. That, and I also don’t know what game can ever follow this one up for me—not something I say lightly (I wasn’t big into God of War, for example.)

Loved it. Altered gaming just like the first.

Season 8 of GOT was the most beautiful looking show that received the highest tv viewers for the last 6 episodes. Guess what, nobody talks about GOT anymore because the writing was inconsistent and bad. That is what will happen to TLOU2 due to bad writing. Graphics were great, but the game falls through if you want to kill a character in this game that you have to play for half the game. Expand

I can totally understand the user score being so low, obviously the storey is of a bitter taste and a heavy strike. But I found it is true to the heart and the storey line is completed really well, even it doesn't go where you want it go.
I am expecting more acceptance over time. And Part 2 will be another remarkable masterpiece in the gaming history. My socre: GAME DESIGN 9 / STORY 10.

This can slow the pacing a bit but a lot of extra character development happens in these sections. The game can take anywhere between 25-30 hours to beat usually. A bleak and sometimes shocking game, would not recommend to people sensitive to fairly graphic violence, violence against animals or scenes of torture. An emotional -if sometimes predictable- plot, the true shine of the story are the characters and their interactions. A fairly more character driven narrative than the first. Expand

The story is absolutely heart wrenchingly good. It's not a story of revenge like everyone is saying. It's not a story of "killing is bad". Plenty of people do plenty of killing. It's a necessity in this world. This is a story about grief and hate. One thing leads to another and the characters end up being led by pure hatred. And I was too. The game made me feel the loss of the characters and made me want to "kill every last one of them". While I cared for some characters much more than others, it's still very easy to see that everything that the characters do, is well within what they would do if they were real people. Unfortunately this leads to some horrible and dark choices, but that is what would realistically happen. It's not bleak, it's evocative. It makes you feel the same sadness and the same happiness that the characters feel. The game has so many happy moments. Potato is a bundle of joy. They are emphasised so much by how dark the characters get in other scenes. It is all woven together and creates a huge contrast where - in the end - you're left with this sinking feeling of grey. In the end it's not about "revenge is bad". It's about how the characters grow and deal with the pain that they're living with, and the price that they have to pay for so desperately wanting that pain to go away. It's about acceptance that something has happened and you just can't change the past. You can't make memories go away, and that's something that we all have to deal with. Along with the choice of whether to let the hatred go or to sacrifice everything in your life in pursuit of satiating that hatred. Go into this game with an open mind. Don't just discount it or look for flaws. Honestly, I just wish there was more. Story is a 10

phasises what you're able to do with the tools and physicality available to you. Stealth? Run and gun? Bit of both? You got it. You already know about the enemies calling each other by names and the brutality of it all. Honestly, to me it was just incredibly satisfying to have the different options where I could lay traps, lure people to a place, swim under water and attack someone from behind. Maybe even threaten someone else by holding their friend hostage. Or even just evading them all can end up exciting. It's all accessible too, which is great. Very customisable. Gameplay is a 10.

In addition to excellent gameplay (just like the first), incredible environments and wonderful graphics, the game has a very different story from the first, but still connected, showing the consequences of the actions of the characters and how it changed them. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This game is NOT a 0/10, review bombing isn't constructive. It's disrespectful to the hundreds of artists, programmers, musicians, writers, and game designers in general. Just because the story wasn't how you expected it to be doesn't mean the entire game is garbage.
That being said, I DO AGREE that this wasn't the direction the sequel should have taken. To me, this game feels like a spin-off rather than a direct continuation of Ellie and Joel's story. It is still however, an engaging and thought provoking story that, when you open your mind a little, really makes you question whether or not Abby deserves to be hated so much.

Well done Naughty Dog, I consider this game a masterpiece, but I can't shake the feeling of frustration about Joel. He deserved to have his story ended far better than what you gave him. But besides that, everything else about this game was top notch.

I am so glad I did as I was riveted to my chair for the entirety of the game. While there are a few weak points in the narrative, Naughty Dog raised the bar how the medium of gaming can be used to tell a story in ways film and literature cannot. Part II is an epic lesson on the costs of revenge, the tribalism it creates, and the endless cycle of violence that comes from an inability to move forward when faced with trauma and loss on a personal and communal level. The typical plot devices used to rationalize violence against opposing factions present in most games including Part I are upended by making your enemies all too human. Every person you kill in the game has a name, which makes the act increasingly distasteful as you progress through the story. This game is not for children seeking a canned post-apocalyptic adventure story. It is brave and timely allegory. Expand

Reviewing a sequel is always a bit iffy. I'll try and be fair here though.

In terms of story, it feels undercooked. It feels like they had ideas, but couldn't decide the best way to implement them. A lot of the story beats could've made sense if given more time to build. Some of the choices seem ill thought out. A scene happens very early in the story (we all know which I believe), which feels haphazard and rushed. It feels like shock for shocks sake. We all knew something like this was likely to happen, it very well could've worked, but again, it was executed very poorly. The choices of story afterwards don't get much better. It's a perfect example of "what could've been". The characters could've been more fleshed out, the plot could've been given more time to breathe, the pivotal story points could've been given more weight. We see moments of character interaction of old in flashbacks, the entire museum segment is arguably the best in the entire game.

The character representation has seemingly been crippled by something. Neil Druckmann has made no secret of his intention to include characters of certain groups and orientations. I can't shake the feeling that he's not writing characters at the moment, but caricatures. The LGBTQ+ characters are largely made to be unlikeable. Which seems strange coming from a Naughty Dog game. The track record of likeable characters from this developer is well known and highly lauded, and rightly so. It does beg the question of what the intention then was. Because it seems to be to make everyone, including the LGBTQ+ characters as unlikeable as possible.

The gameplay is improved from the original, nothing to write home about but there is improvement there. The graphics as expected from ND are impeccable.

My recommendation would be to buy this on a heavy sale. This game being a ND game had a lot of expectation on it's story. It would seem to me, and clearly a lot of others that they failed here. It is not nearly comparable to the original in any way from a story perspective.

The characters we knew and loved have been seemingly ret-conned to a point where they appear to be different people with a similar name. The new characters fair no better, if anything, they get it worse, as there's nothing to grab onto and relate to. The originals ambiguous ending has also been changed to a black & white matter as well. Gone is the uneasy feeling of Joels final decision, instead changed to him being the obvious villain of the game.

I don't know what lead to this outcome, but something changed drastically between parts 1 and 2 development. I would genuinely urge the developers at ND to try and identify this change and make changes for their next project. They can do better than this, they have done better than this. I hope they will do better than this.

The biggest issue remains with the story. The story is definitely not good. It is inconsistent with what has been shown previously regarding the characters we have come to know and love in the previous game. The worst part, however, is how the game has cheap attempts to make you feel bad about the people or the animals you kill whilst forcing you to kill them. It's a horrible misinterpretation of what it means to survive in a post-apocalyptic world. Abby is an insult to the gamers. She is the worst character, nobody likes her, nobody can identify with her. She is just another example of badly written female characters imposing unrealistic body standards to women. And to add salt to the injury, we don't even get the satisfaction of killing her as Ellie by the end of the game. This game is not a 0/10, but it is definitely not a 10/10 like most "critics" seem to pretend. This game is nothing special, it is just average. A 6/10, maybe a 7/10 if you can really get into it. Spectacular game, impeccable narrative and unbelievable character development. The Last of us Part II masterfully shows us the various sides that involve a story, and how each act has consequences. A masterpiece!

The gameplay doesnt innovate, but it makes more realistic every part of the original title. It has good action, that makes you feel as tense as if you would be in the middle of the shooting. And every zombie scene, is as good survival horror as Resident Evil in the gold age.
I wont say anything about the graphics. You can drool by yourself be watching any video.

The inept Direction of this game sadly detracts from the amazing visuals and solid gameplay. The creative decisions made in the story would be laugh out loud bad if only the game wasn't trying it's best to make you feel like crap for playing. Can not in good conscience recommend this game, especially to those who are attached to characters and themes of the first game. Truly heartbreaking.

It feels like we're playing a next-gen title on the PS4 Pro, the game is visually pleasing. The story is where the game lacks the most. We spend a good half of the game as Abby, the antagonist of the story. This character felt so forcibly written in. While playing as Abby, the player is forced to go on this unpleasant journey into brutally killing characters that were so beloved from the first, it felt so wasted. The ending left a lot to be desired. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The graphics, game play, sounds and of course music are absolutely stunning, but everyone cares about the story which from my point of view is wonderful, in the end Ellie did the right choice by not killing Abby since she didn't deserve it and went through enough pain already. I understand that she killed Joel, but in the first game Joel did a terrible choice by trying to save Ellie...even though he couldn't lose another daughter. He doomed the whole planet by making a cure impossible to be created. He did the wrong choice...but didn't have any other option. Abby has the right to kill him however she wants. End in the end, the fact that Ellie spared Abby broke my heart. It's true that the first game had better character development and it was amazing to see Ellie and Joel trying to survive together. But after all that Ellie went through it is normal for her to be like she is now. The series is so well thought that some players can't even understand what it is about so they think that Joel did the right choice and Abby did deserve to die. This is my all time favourite game series and i hope that there will be a part 3. But please don't kill Ellie i don't think she did much wrong! Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Abby was a Mistake.
So Abby kills Joel in the first 2 hours of the game and makes you and Ellie hate her and want revenge. Joel, by the way, is arguably one of the most humanized father figures in gaming. In the original, we see Joel go from a loving father to a cold-hearted survivor, and through his connection with Ellie we see him develop into a loving father figure again. The entire 1st game had an underlining message of hope, and I remember hearing that hope was the theme for the first game and that hate was going to be the theme for this game, but they did not deliver on this in trying so hard to make you feel empathetic towards Abby.

The 10 hours spent playing with Abby is a failed attempt to make you feel empathy for a character that murders Joel because Joel murders Abby’s father. Not to mention that Abby’s father held a knife up to Joel when Joel entered the surgery room.

The thing about Abby’s sad story is that most fans of Joel and the 1st game could care less about Abby’s sad story. At most, Abby gets a sarcastic “boo-hoo” and afterwards players are still itching to kill her. If we have learned anything about The Last of Us’ world, it is that everybody in this world has a sad story. Trying to get players to have sympathy for this character in a world full of sad stories was a stretch.

In this world people are forced to choose sides and most fans of the first game have chosen the side of Joel and Ellie. Choosing Joel and Ellie’s side does not mean that we don’t recognize that there are two sides of any conflict or that we agree with Joel and Ellie in all their moral decisions. Choosing their side in this world means that despite their flaws we choose to care about their sad story above all others and we give them leeway to make unmoral decisions in a world that clearly lacks morality. That’s why even if some fans agree that Joel was wrong for saving Ellie and killing the doctor, most fans cannot feel sympathy for Abby because we are fully on Joel and Ellie’s side despite their lack of moral clarity.

The game tries too hard and wastes too much time trying to make you feel something for Abby, and this is where I think some critics miss what fans are pointing out. I agree that it was a risk, gamble, and ambitious to take this route for TLOU2. I have never played a game that tried so hard to make you not only understand but identify with the antagonist’s point of view. I give the developers credit for the try, but fans are correct to point out that they missed the mark completely and I am not sure they could ever make fans who have chosen Joel and Ellie’s side feel bad for Abby. For sure we felt bad for Yara and Lev. We felt horrible for Yara giving her life for Abby. We even read the notes scattered through the abandoned buildings and feel sympathy for the victims in the notes. But Yara and Lev and the other victims you read about have not killed Joel and they are not in conflict with the side we have chosen to back.

The main problem with playing with Abby as fans of the first game is that we feel forced to play with a character we do not feel any connection with for 10 hours. Fans of this title understand that Abby has a sad story, of course she does, everybody in this world has a sad story. Developers thought they could make you feel something for Abby by showing her dad die, showing her focus on training above relationships, showing her help some kids, and showing her get captured and put into slavery. Players on the other hand look at this world as a dog eat dog world and fans of TLOU simply don’t care if Joel wronged Abby or that Abby suffered. The game tries to make you question who the real bad guys are, but for fans its clear through the whole game; Abby is the bad guy and needs to be taken down.

I was not as upset as some by Ellie not killing Abby. I did want Ellie to kill Abby, and if given the choice I would have killed Abby. But again, as a fan of TLOU, I have chosen to care about and support Ellie’s decision, because I care more about her than Abby’s life.

After thinking about this game and seeing the conflict between the WLF and SCARS, I really wish the story could have involved a war between Jackson and some faction like the WLF. They could have shown negotiations breakdown between clans. A war could have broken out. Abby could be in the game and she can still kill Joel, but maybe she realizes during the war that Joel is the same guy that killed her father. Maybe they could have let you play with Joel for a couple of hours before killing him. Jackson could lose the war and be forced to move, and Ellie could have come back for vengeance after her people were safe. Something where we are told about Abby’s story, but not expected to really feel bad for her, because that didn’t work. A war would also have accounted for all the killing throughout the game.

Sorry one last gripe – Not one person gets infected

The gameplay takes what worked in TLOU and expands it, and it’s animation system is by far the most smooth I’ve seen in a game. Whilst the game is not perfect, and not as straight forward as the first game (which some may not like), it gives you everything you could want from a sequel, and more. When Naughty Dog said they expected the game to be divisive, they weren’t wrong. Though don’t be put off by out of context spoilers, because context does matter, and when it’s all added up, it equals a well thought out, gut wrenchingly dark story, that many will find themselves enjoying. It is one of the most moving and enjoyable games I've ever played and is something I can see myself returning to play through again. The story was masterfully crafted, the characters were relatable and more human than you would imagine in a video game and on top of that the monstrous enemies in the game were terrifying leading to many intense and frightful moments throughout the game. That game was lightning in a bottle which gave us all the right stuff in one magnificently wrapped package. Unfortunately the much anticipated sequel The Last Of Us 2 falls far short in every department, excluding visuals and violence of course.

The Last Of Us 2 is beautiful to look at no doubt about it with many improvements to environments both flora and fauna, but the story is very poorly written with many ideas shoehorned into it to satisfy Naughty Dog's baizuo of a game director. I didn't feel the sense of fear I did when encountering Clickers in the first game and they felt very throwaway and definitely took a backseat to both Ellie the protagonist, and Abby the games over-the-top villain. Constant modern-era ideals are thrown in your face with a very snarky air to them at all the wrong times which makes the game feel more like a lecture being given to you at gunpoint than an actual fun and engaging video game experience.

The game romanticizes the idea of vengeance and makes no attempt to curb the idea that seeking revenge isn't the right thing to do. Most revenge plots in media have some sort of justfication as to why it takes place but aside from lazily handwaving plot crumbs at the player justification is completely absent. People who are regularly angry or spiteful towards people will enjoy this game as they can vent their anger out on people in very tastelessly violent ways albeit very impressive looking ones. The game makes it a point to glorify slaughtering people with different ideals and promptly nudges the player into sympathizing with the now hate-filled and hastily written Ellie. I would say they ruined a great character by making Ellie just another merciless killer out for revenge with low IQ plot points and new character traits the bottom (and loud) 25% who will demonstrate their bias and wrongfully rate this game either a solid 10 or 1, which is definitely isn't. This game isn't a good sequel to the Last Of Us and most people who fell in love with that game will want to pass on this one. Watch a streamer play it instead.

All-in-all, The Last Of Us 2 is the sequel we got instead of the one we were showed in promotional media. The game looks fantastic, but the horrible story, lazy character writing and tasteless force-feeding of "The Correct Political Opinion" makes The Last Of Us 2 a beautiful but harmful smut video game.

Rent it for a weekend if you must. If you are an avid dog lover you might hate this game.

I was deceived by Druckmann's LIES and deceptive trailers, we would only play as Ellie and they'd "do right by these characters" and so far supported every single game they ever brought out. But I knew it would never be as good as part 1 and so I didn't expect it to be.
I played through the entire game, I forced myself to finish after the insulting way the characters were treated and how we as players were treated and cried for days. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. First of all, if you are bombing this game’s score just because there’s a lesbian couple, and a trans character at the center of this story, please go somewhere else, it’s 2020 that’s really all I have to say and people with common sense and empathy shouldn’t see an issue with that. Secondly, I can understand why some people have an issue with the way they decided to handle the narrative for this game. I would say (getting negatives out of the way first) my biggest issue with TLOU2 is the pacing and the structure of the story, not really with the story itself. I feel like the pacing would have been better if they somehow found a way to intertwine the 2 huge chunks of the games playtime when you play as Ellie up until Abby finds her and co. at the theatre, and then we jump back and play from Day 1 in Seattle to that moment as Abby. It just felt like all momentum the story had getting to that moment came to a screeching halt and really threw me for a loop for a bit, although after a while I settled in and did become more invested in Abby’s story when I had a chance to see where they were taking this story. Now all of the positives: An absolutely gorgeous game from beginning to end, truly astonishing attention to detail as the environments are so well designed and look so jaw dropping consistently. Sound design is also incredibly impressive it has so much depth, I include the music/score with that. The gameplay is extremely engaging, whether choosing to be stealthy or go in guns blazing. Also, all of the voice acting was absolutely award worthy, especially Ashley Johnson, good lord...she absolutely hit it out of the park, especially since Ellie in this game, is much more complicated of a character to play in my opinion then Ellie from the first game. All in all I say bravo to everyone who had a hand in making this game. From developers to writers, to voice actors and level designers, I believe this game as a whole is an extremely divisive masterpiece. And maybe (much like Metal Gear Solid 2) in time the majority of people who disliked, or even hated, and review bombed this game, will come to realize how rich of an experience it really is, and appreciate it for that. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This game was a disappointment based on the poor story telling associated with it. There are several moments in the story that simply do not pass the common sense test of human interaction.

    1. When Joel is killed his death is because he told a stranger his name after helping them. This is the same Joel who knew that he was a wanted man based on the actions he took in the hospital in the previous game. Our paranoid Joel was now either foolish or naive something not fitting with all his actions up to that point. This stranger(Abby) then killed him as she was hunting him. 2. Playing as Abby: Shortly after Joel meets his untimely end you play a stretch as her which doesn’t make much sense, you don’t want to identify with her you just want to see her dead because she destroyed a character that we got to see shattered just to be built up again. 3. The ending: Ellie goes on a quest to avenge Joel and at the end when it’s time to kill Abby and avenge the man who meant so much to you, ya just stop and let her leave. The person who took so much from you, that you killed so many just to get a shot at her now you let walk free. Particularly when you are drowning her, with all that adrenaline pumping through her veins you mean to tell me that despite every chemical in her body telling her to kill that somehow she had a moment of altruistic clarity. The crackhead at my local gas station knows that just doesn’t add up.

I’ve read a few reviews and it appears some believe Naughty Dog is “pandering.” And I imagine by pandering folks mean that recognizing a lesbian could be a main protagonist of a story. I’m assuming it’s a homophobic issue and destain for the LGBTQ+ community. I’ve read a few reviews and it appears some believe Naughty Dog is “pandering.” And I imagine by pandering folks mean that recognizing a lesbian could be a main protagonist of a story. Are folks aware that about 99.9% of characters in games are straight and or assumed to be heterosexual? Are production studios pandering to the heterosexual agenda? Further, typically when one is homophobic, it means you’re struggling with some sort of internalized self hate, if you know what I mean. I wanted to call out the obvious contempt for the LGBTQ+ community in the video game community. As for the game, it was amazing. Was it perfect, no. Nothing is perfect. The graphics were stellar. The story was both intense and touching. Ellie’s flashbacks of Joel were touching, especially when he took her to the museum in Wyoming for her birthday. The gameplay was great, it was easy to maneuver throughout the environments. The relationships between characters were well hashed out. I cared about these characters and what happened to them. I felt for Ellie as she struggled to adjust in a world of pain and misery at such a young age. I really enjoyed the game and think most will too. Enjoy the game and learn a thing or two. Expand

Had nothing that the original story had, all of the characters feel like they are from a diversity commercial and nothing feels genuine or real, sick of the game industry forcing SJW crap down our throats. the LOU DLC was good enough

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The Last of Us Part II is the high point of the PlayStation 4. The plot is controversial, but the game is the incredibly addictive adventure of Ellie, from which it is impossible to pull away from the opening and to the very end.

Not everyone is going to enjoy the motives of The Last of Us Part II. But if you try and manage to accept the subliminal and not so subtle messages as a fact that the world has gone awry and that people have the need to have somewhere or someone to belong to as their own way out, then... You will witness the boundaries of gaming expand. You will witness a true masterpiece.

If you loved the original for its great characters and well-paced story – stay away from this game. However, if you’re aching to sink into the depths of depression, or just want to cut some throats and burn some zombies – Part II will deliver. [Issue#247, p.72]
