No Spoilers - Honest High Level Review.

I divide this review into 2 main parts, technical aspects and story.

    1. Technical: The Last of Us Part II is an absolute masterpiece if you look at the quality of the game play, graphics and overall atmosphere of the game. All the levels are beautifully crafted, the weapons are smooth and lethal, the violence is raw and the levels are scary and emotional. Because of this, I don't blame the developers or designers at Naughty Dog, they've done an incredible job and should be praised and compensated for it.

    2. Story: The piece that breaks the experience and the reason why there are so many negative reviews. Simply put, the story makes no sense. Key and beloved character murdered in almost the first hour of game play seems to imply that the game will be fast paced but the game ends up taking 25+ hours to finish. From the murder scene mentioned, nothing happens outside of a couple deaths of characters that you don't even get to know. The story ends without anything major happening, the last scene is one that could be blamed for the debacle. The last couple hours of game play should have never been included in the game, again, absolutely nothing happens but a symbolic loss of flesh (sounds weird and it is).

Conclusion: it's pretty easy to say that the Last of Us series is done. Taking into account the story of this game and the negative reaction of the public, I can almost guarantee that it won't even cross the mind of Neil Druckmann to create another part for this series. On a personal note, I was amazed by the quality of the game play but extremely disappointed by the story and the choices made in this game. One big let down that will be hard to forget.

The game is obviously beautiful, animations top notch. Game play is only a marginal improvement from the first game.

The major issue with this game is the story, it's atrocious. Ellie is a shell of her former self, making choices that are so absurd and lack any forethought. Joel is very much in the same boat, he does not have the same skepticism that kept him alive for so long. I am exhausted by the dumb accusations of homophobia or trans-phobia. I could not give a s*it if there are lgbtq characters as long as they are believable and written well. The writers here threw in the towel and clearly did not care how the story was concluded or if it made any sense. I am so tired of this game, goodbye Naughty Dog.

Yes the gameplay is fantastic and I was completely impressed with it, but what ruins this game is the story. The story is just so awful with the way it treats its characters. Within the first hour of my play through I had to witness one of my favorite characters get brutally slaughtered, right then and there I was ready to take the disc out of my PlayStation and throw the disc out my window. But I gave it a second chance and again I was impressed by visuals and gameplay but the story is what holds it back. Then the unthinkable happens and the game switches over to the most hated video game character of all time and that is Abby this part of the game I just kept killing her on purpose over and over again Until I reached the worst ending of all video game History!!!! I could not believe THATS how this game ends. Such a waste of money and the sad part is I can’t even get a refund. I don’t get how anyone can support naughty dog beyond this point not only they treat their employees like **** but they also treated one of their most beloved game like **** save your money and don’t support this evil studio. There were so many flashbacks and it just felt like the game was out of order. I also hated playing as Abby and almost wanted to stop playing the game entirely. Not to mention, the boss fight against Ellie as Abby disturbed me a lot and probably many others because I love Ellie and I have no sympathy for Abby... sorry. On the other hand, the graphics were amazing and the combat was okay, I liked the new additions (new infected, jump button, army crawl, etc.) I think they did a very good job of polishing the gameplay. Abby beats Joel to death with a golf club two hours into the game... you proceed to go to Seattle as Ellie and kill all of Abby’s friends but not Abby. You then are FORCED to play as Abby for TEN HOURS and you have to FIGHT ELLIE. Later on as Ellie you have a farm with Dina and you have Jessie’s baby. Tommy shows up and shows Ellie where Abby is. She travels all the way from Wyoming to Southern California just to beat the **** out of Abby but let her live because apparently killing the person who beat Joel to death with a golf club in front of you is wrong (the game tries to justify Abby’s actions by making the doctor you killed as Joel at the end of the first game her father but that’s just lazy writing). Ellie then goes back home to find that Dina and the baby are gone and then the game just ends. You really couldn’t have tried harder to ruin a great game franchise Neil. Have you not learned that inserting politics and forced inclusion into your game damns it? You deserve to be fired for your idiocy and never show your face in the gaming world again. In the end I’m both upset and angry about the amount of time we waited for this game but just to receive a terrible story full of forced inclusion and identity politics. If you haven’t yet I strongly recommend DO NOT buy this game and DO NOT give Naughty Dog and more money to make anymore trash like this. Great gameplay terrible story. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. There are two things to say about this game.
First, it is interminably repetitive in terms of the gameplay, which is tight enough, but you can only watch the same shock value neck-stabbing animation about fifty times before you don’t really care anymore. Now it’s a good animation, and thematically you could say it speaks to something the devs want you to feel, but I say when that overly goofy bug-eyed death rattle becomes a major plot point that they want you to care about it loses all of it’s power.

This goes to the second thing, deeply, fundamentally wrong with this game. How endlessly frustrating and unsure of itself it is. Honestly, i love the accessibility options, as someone who makes use of them myself, any points this game gets goes to that attention so few devs pay. However, the idea that the resolution of the plot relies on, i **** you not, the ableist positioning that ellie can’t just learn to play her guitar left-handed, almost all of that goodwill is thrown straight into the trash. Abby can skirt the themes of the game and their consequences purely because she is bigger and stronger than ellie. This game is a paradox. It cares about differently abled players, and yet the narrative is more dismissive than anything i’ve seen lately. This game is not a masterpiece, it is a flawed, conflicted, contradictory exercise in excess stylized as realism.

I would like to stress i don’t care too much about the plot, the first was better but it wasn’t the best thing ever, so i don’t get the sheer rage over it not being the same game. Mechanically, this plays like early uncharted with a half broken controller. For every bit of smooth and satisfying gameplay there are just as many stiff and buggy moments where the game doesn’t detect very well especially when squeezing through walls.

The violence is great though, i guess. Also there’s something really problematic with the cloying attempt to get players to have similar reactions to Mel and Alice’s deaths respectively. Edge does not compensate for decent structure, no matter how many pregnant necks get stabbed with that same damn animation.

Borrow it from a friend, but don’t expect too much, certainly not a masterpiece.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I won’t go into the obvious good points of the game and jump right into what I didn’t like. The plot. If ND really wanted me and others to like Abby, they should’ve made her spare Joel (who had just rescued her from certain death), thus ruining their whole revenge idea for the rest of the game. What does this mean? They should’ve scrapped this terrible plot. Out of all the directions they could have taken this once great story, the direction they went was just incredibly bad. Why not make another dr/scientist character who was able to find a cure, only to fail at the end after Ellie willingly lets them kill her if you wanted to really tug at my heartstrings. That could have been a huge amount of gameplay if the goal in the story was to find the cure like it was last time. Other good ideas would include... having that creepy cult be full of immune people and purposely, even forcefully breeding to make more immune (pure) people and would better explain why they’d want to kill other people and having it revealed that the team with the scientist who may have a cure has been kidnapping and killing these immune people over and over to find the cure and failing before they even attempted it with Ellie. Then a revenge story would make sense. Dina and/or Joel, hell, even Abby would want revenge against them for lying to Ellie. Or the cultists could have kidnapped Ellie, discovering her immunity and trying to force her to breed. That would be a compelling story about rescue/and escape. If they had taken a different course, Abby could’ve been likable and even friends with Ellie. This entire thing was just a slog. I couldn’t believe I had to go through that huge traversal with Abby, knowing she was going to find her friends dead... where’s the suspense in that? I truly didn’t care about what I was doing for most of this game. I was really hoping to see some characters actually make more good decisions in this game. I don’t know why they decided to make most of the characters dullards with no emotional intelligence. Why not give them the ability to have conversations and empathy that could avoid violence. In the first game we see the separation of evil people and good people. Guy protecting spunky girl who reminds him of his daughter vs. cannibals and merciless highway robbers. In the end he makes a tough choice that puts him in a grey area, but those In this game we are forced over and over again to murder people who we don’t really want to because of nonsensical decisions. Sure it’s a complicated world with monsters around every corner, and no therapists, but Jesus, give us some hope for humanity. I was extremely disappointed by the events of this story. Bleak indeed. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Never thought id be the type of person to write a review like this for a game but here i go....

to start off, the graphics are very impressive and also the slight improvements to combat and stealth systems are very welcome but i think what the game lacks, and is quite important to the last of us is the story. i don't think the story is as bad as people say it is nor do i think it is better or even close to how good TLOU was. Is it fair to say the reason why people don't like the story is because of LGBT inclusion? absolutely not. i think it is ridiculous to say that people hate this game because of that. sure, it might be the reason that a VERY select few dislike the game but i feel this criticism of people who disliked the game has been completely blown out of the water. i would like to point out that i have no problem with gay people or trans people and i feel like i need to saw that which to me is also very ridiculous, it is very clear in The last of us DLC that Ellie is attracted to women, is that problem? no. is Abby being trans a problem? No, not at all. my problem with the use of a trans character in a game that is set 25 years into a zombie apocalypse, im fairly certin there are more important things to worry about than wanting to transition from male to female.

Talking more about what happens to Joel, i tihnk that it was fairly obvious that something bad was going to happen to him. of course he is a beloved character and nobody including my self wanted something to happen to him but unfortunately, thats the way it worked out. Joel definitly deserved to go out in a more fitting way for his character but what has been done is done.

    THE ENDING....

This for me is the reason why i decied to write this. is it a good ending? no, absolutly not. is it a bad ending? definitly not as bad as people are saying it is. of course people are entitled to their opinions of how the ending is but i feel like it is exactly how naughty dog wanted the game to end, no one really wins. Ellie can't play the geetar, she loses dina and the baby, she loses joel and id say she loses herself in that she is no longer the bright spark that we know her to be while she is younger. Abby too loses everything, she loses her friends, her love interest and her ties to what is practicaly her family (The WLF) and i feel that having this ending of Ellie leaving behind the guitar is pretty much leaving her past behind and she is walking away from it. one thing im scared of is seeing a TLOS part 3 which i hope is jesus never comes true as seeing Abby escape on the boat with lev makes me feel like this is what naughty dog are trying to do.

Now. i gave this game a very unstable 6 as i feel like TLOU Part 2 still manages to capture the emotion of how we feel about Joel and Ellie. i cried when Joel died and i the amazing flashbacks of Joel and ellie made me tear up every time i saw them, even now when i watch the museum one it really makes me tear up. overall 2 of the 6 rating is for the story, its not a bad story but it is not good. the other 4 for the rating is based on the graphics and gameplay, im not having these things as the main factors to my rating because as i mention TLOU and TLOU Part 2 are dependent on the story to bed good. bad story = bad game.

6/10 is my final score. good graphics, average gameplay and a fairly poor story but definitly not as bad as people say

There's not way he (and probably even Tommy) would have allowed themselves to waltz into a room full of strangers and not even be armed????? Then we're forced to play as a woman none of us relate to all in an attempt to prove that revenge is wrong? Abby is only ever stopped from killing people because some weenie tells her to. Not to mention that we have to fight Ellie at the end and she's programmed like a dunce when the first game clearly portrayed her as a girl very capable in combat, there were so many opportunities where Ellie could have killed Abby but nooooo muh plot. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. It's super underwhelming as the sequel to what I think is actually the best story ever told in a game. I understand what they were going for but it's just so boring. They keep hammering home this idea that revenge and the cycle of violence is bad. No **** That's not an interesting idea, everybody knows that. I'm stunned people keep saying "this game makes you think," because unless you're a serial killer, it really doesn't. Of course Abby had a reason to want to kill Joel. Of course revenge and violence will **** up your mental state, of course it can ruin your life. Who thinks otherwise? This central idea is so boring and lame.

Further, the characters are utter disappointments. Abby, who I initially hated for clubbing Joel, was the only one that I think was well developed. Jesse, a character we meet very early on and one of Ellie's core friends, is killed by Abby as he opens a door, and then after that he is mentioned ONCE hours later. It's like he never existed. Lev's sister dies, and Lev is disturbed for a bit and then she's never mentioned ever again. We play with Dina for a bit, then we leave her in a theatre and never play with her again, and she's basically just always in the theatre. Abby's friends are even less interesting, except for Owen. Mel is.. a medic and pregnant, and that's it. We know nothing else except then she dies and we're supposed to feel bad because she was pregnant. Nora - I remember nothing about, except that she dies interrogated by Ellie. Who is she? What does she like? Where'd she come from|? Who knows. So many of these characters just feel like fillers and throwaways, and the few interesting characters aren't really developed. Isaac was interesting - how'd he get to the top of the WLF, where's he from - we don't know and we see him once talk with him and then next time we see him he gets shot and killed and never mentioned again. Manny seemed interesting and was a funny guy and then he gets shot next to Abby and she never mentions him again. Overall the characters are uninteresting, some are underdeveloped, and they're generally very weak.

Gameplay is fine - it's basically the same from TLOU1 except you have a few new toys like trapmines, but it's basically the same. Not bad, not good just good enough, which is fine because in the first game, it didn't need to be good because of how the story held up the game. But here, the story fails, and then the gameplay fails because it becomes repetitive. By the end, I was so tired of doing the same **** over and over again. Put a trapmine there, stealth kill here, throw a molotov there, throw a bottle and grab him and then kill him. Over and over and over and over. Frankly, it was extremely boring by the end.

The visuals, acting, and music in this game are top-notch. Absolutely amazing, possibly the best I've ever seen, although I think the music in the first game was marginally better. The acting especially is straight movie quality - I think Ashley johnson hit it out of the park, and Troy Baker had one scene that I think was the best acted scene in the game (the last cutscene). Abby's actor was amazing as well, and although some of her moments weren't as emotional to me, that's less because of her acting ability and more because of the story's structure.

It's very disturbing to me that people who liked this game are saying that all the negative reviews are coming from transphobic, homophobic people. Ellie and Dina's relationship was actually a highlight, but it didn't get enough time. Reading some of the reviews I've learned that Lev is actually transgender. I had no idea, I guess that's why she wasn't supposed to cut her hair, but I never made that connections. I really hope ND doesn't just dismiss all of the negative reviews as homophobic **** because I really think the story has some genuine issues. In the same vein, this game is not a 0/10 or 1/10. The acting, graphics and music alone raise that to at least a 4, and I think the gameplay being decent and the story having some highlights raises that to just an average game. Because this is a story driven experience, the story has more weight in terms of how I would rate it. In the context of TLOU1, a 5/10 is a failure, but had this been a standalone game, it would've just been fine.

    THE PLOT
Through all game inadequate or unexplained actions of heroes, for example - from the very beginning the WLF squad is looking for Joel for revenge? in the first part, he killed everyone to save Ellie and they look for him for revenge, just to kill him and not to get Ellie back and continue vaccine experiments -? this is the creative impotence of Druckmann as a screenwriter, this plot is the level of kindergarten and not the ingenious plot, FULL Inadequacy! if they went for revenge and didn’t kill Ellie and Tommy right away, why didn’t they say something like “don’t get into it” and didn’t tell why Joel got clubbed, so since they decided not to kill Tommy and Ellie, somehow it doesn’t converge for the soulless killers who had to kill everyone, and since they didn’t kill, they had some moral values, so they should have explained to Ellie and Tommy why, since they are such moralists, in general DISCONTINUITY, and inadequacy! Further, as it turned out, we see that her pregnant girlfriend Dina... wait, - WHAT? PREGNANT? But who in their right mind, being pregnant goes to avenge some guy(Joel) who just lived in your town? move on - meeting with Nora, we can see inadequacy and artificial conflict, Ellie begins to attack her with simulated non-realistic accusations like “Remember me...”, instead of asking why you killed Joel, Nora just acting stupid - your life hangs on the edge and instead of telling what happened and protecting yourself, that's exactly how would act 99% of people in their sane mind, but she begins aggression? Druckmann, "well done" shows him as a "connoisseur" of psychology! Further, we can see Ellie's moral suffering from the murder of Nora and other WLF members - WHAT, SERIOUSLY? after Ellie killed about 50 people before that, in cold blood with a knife in the throat, can she still have any remorse? - Druckmann "genius" yes, he is just a god, "expert" in psychology! then we have some kind of a flashback with a conversation from the past where Ellie finds out that Joel killed everyone and why... STOP what is that??!! here the plot collapses completely because inadequacy rolls over, and if Ellie knew for what they killed Joel and should have understood that Joel got what he deserved at the beginning and thus there should be no further game at all! Further inadequate actions - when meeting a pregnant Mel and her husband in a conversation they said that Abby disappeared and may already be dead but don’t want to give up where she is and then they attack and got killed - yes this is exactly how a woman behaves on the 7-8th month of pregnancy and her husband protecting her, Druckmann is a genius, what a turn, genius, this shows him as an "expert" in psychology and a "talented" screenwriter.
    NOTES IN THE GAME
why they even exist? game lore presentation? ok, but they are meaningless passages of scribble to be read, they contain 0 information! and these cards, why they even exist, what the purpose?
    GENERAL PLOT ISSUES
teenagers as main characters in the first part of the game, acting like pros and cooler than any trained mercenary, indestructible cyborgs, the terminator rests aside... what? teenager killers in
the post-apocalyptic world, genius, Druckmann is a genius, what a turn, no, cheap Netflix style plot!
weapon improvement system is stupid and not immersive - we collect bolts and nuts and making an optical sight, compensator, etc... how? from bolts? it would be more adequate to find them in the open-world, all these compensators, scopes, rather than “craft”, from bolts. immersive feeling suffers greatly when you see something like this, casual upgrades for upgrades just because we need weapon upgrades. Next, we have the fact that melee weapons break from blows, am I silly or HOW the hammer or an axe - AXE! can break from chopping human flesh? - this shows Druckmann's fail in creativity and his impotence as a game designer who could not come up with gameplay where it would be necessary to change weapons and thus making artificial barriers in the gameplay, which simply looks stupid and not immersive at all! Why the gun, unlike the axe, does not break after 6 shots, ok, I see, according to Druckmann's vision the axe is a much more complicated mechanism, that's why - genius!
    GRAPHICS AND SOUND
In general, game graphical realization and sound are VERY GOOD, my respect, this is 10 out of 10, the Naughty Dog technical team made it well, but there are minor flaws if you look carefully, e.g. the grass sways in layers like a sheet, unrealistic jumping animations are just awful, done clumsy and unrealistic, like a super Mario game, sometimes Jesse may lose his hair and became bald, but it's trifles.
GAME AI AND DIFFICULTY - dumb as hell...
sorry, I can't write more than 5000 characters but I would say more about every aspect of the game, and yes I did not finished the game, disappointed!

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view.

New features were added such as jumping and swimming, but the overall gameplay remains the exact same. The game gives you a variety of new ways to eliminate enemies, but does little to innovate in terms of actual design. A lot of scenarios are the same and the overall gameplay remains almost the exact same as the original except that stealth is a more viable option.
As violent as this game is, the game goes through great detail to make sure that the enemies you are fighting are humanized. Whenever you kill a character in view of another character, that character will shout their name. Whenever you kill or fight an enemy, you can clearly hear their screams of agony. The game gives you more detail on these random enemies and throwaway ai models than the actual secondary characters within the game. The Last of Us 2 has a tendency to just randomly do things for shock value at any given moment. There are various moments where the game will invest you into a secondary character just to have them instantly die at random moments, with no time to think or process what just happened. It’s nigh impossible to truly invest in any secondary character because they will likely die off in a few scenes.
The Last of Us 2 attempts to tell a story about vengeance and the effects that the violence can have, but it fails miserably because of the setup. The game starts off with a gruesome, shocking death that it never really recovers from. It attempts to paint ‘an eye for an eye’ scenario without explaining anything around the scenario until much later in the second half of the game. All throughout the game, it glorifies violence through ultra violent killings, many of which are forced that you have no control of. It attempts to chastise and criticize the player for being violent when the game itself encourages violence for most of the situations you find yourself in. One such situation is a Quick Time Event where you are forced to kill a dog. The game later tries to make you feel bad for this decision by giving you a flashback playing with this dog. This feels cheap and comes across as a very poor way of Naughty Dog trying to shoehorn in its themes.

The second half of the game is no better. The game completely switches viewpoints at a key moment in the story and places you in the position of a different character. This is where many people’s entire investment in the game ends and is where the game falls flat on its face. You play as this completely unlikeable character who has been villainized for the entire game, and you are forced to go through a redemption arc in order to have you sympathize with the character. This is way after the character has done actions out of nowhere with zero characterization and these actions making zero sense. The entire backstory of this character is shoehorned and thrown in during this key moment in order to provide a rushed, slapped-together reason to identify with the character.
The gameplay also takes a sharp dive at this point. The gameplay loop of run-fight- upgrade-loot becomes very noticeable when the game throws everything that it can to make sure that you cannot progress. Instead of puzzles or other things that you need to solve to progress, the game throws locked doors, randomly collapsing structures, and obstacles to make sure that your progress is as sluggish as possible. The game transitions from feeling akin to Tomb Raider with its puzzles and level design to feeling like a glorified game show. The gameplay at this point felt boring and unintuitive, and played like it was thrown in solely to give extra hours of gameplay.

The Last of Us 2 being longer than the original game might seem like a blessing, but it works against the game in this case. The entire second half of the game plays like filler, with poor level design, poor narrative, and poor gameplay loop. Around the 15 hour mark, I was ready for this game to start tying things up, but instead I got hit with repetitive level design and constant flashback sessions for an unlikeable character.
The game has some it’s best moments within the first half’s flashbacks, but even though they offer brief touching and interesting moments that shed some light into the narrative of the original, it felt very jarring being thrown in and out of the actual pacing of the story. Key moments are given cliffhangers to plot dump and narrative dump, and the pacing is all over the place.

Unfortunately, the storytelling and characters do not match this depiction of the game. In trying to improve the visual fidelity of the series, they removed everything that made the first game so beloved. You are thrown into a generic, cliched revenge plot with empty characters and sloppily rewritten main characters, along with an ending that makes every single thing that you went through for the entire game feel meaningless.

Clearly this game isn't a 0, a 2 or even a 4 / 10 , in terms of graphics this game is top notch and beautifully executed, really immersive, just spitting on that aspect because "muh it's 2020 it's obvious" is really dishonest imo, devs, designers and artists put a lot of hours and hard work to create, shape, otpimize and make it as gorgeous and smooth as it is so at least give some respect for their work and give credit where it's due, those people didn't write or make the story. Anyway speaking of the story, the big yikes plot, i think we can all aggree that THIS part (probably the most important in a game that's story-driven) was the real failure in this game, no matter how hard you try to explain it, it always seems off and poorly written, i'm sorry Neil but you're far from being as bright as you think you are, anyway that was a big flop, which takes this game from a previously top tier to a barely average game saved only by graphics, gameplay, and great optimization (because exclusive). A very average and no more than a 6 / 10 for me. Expand

The game is not bad. The gameplay, graphicss, work with details are very good but I think a plot is not a level of Naughty dog.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. It took me 24 hrs to finish the game. The LOS2 should've being about Ellie and Joel but instead I got to play with a character called Abby. It wouldve been nice if it was a stand alone game but to play with the villain made me uncomfortable. The whole LGBTQ agenda is crystal clear here like I mean I dnt have anything against it but seriously lile you made the majority gay or **** and not just that I had to read love letters about some gay guy who lost his husband. They pushed this too hard and it ruined the game for me. The ending lacked a meaningful ending I mean it didnt even show where Dina went or what happened or where did Ellie leave to. They had 10 years to male this game and it feels rushed with an agenda full motive. Plus Joel dying like that!?? I mean let him die no problem but the whole coencidence of meeting Abby and all felt to good to be true. Wish they had gone a different route. P. s the gameplay still felt clunky like the old game but I liled it. P. P. S all that looting made me dizzy as hell. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view.

The Last of Us Part II is the high point of the PlayStation 4. The plot is controversial, but the game is the incredibly addictive adventure of Ellie, from which it is impossible to pull away from the opening and to the very end.

Not everyone is going to enjoy the motives of The Last of Us Part II. But if you try and manage to accept the subliminal and not so subtle messages as a fact that the world has gone awry and that people have the need to have somewhere or someone to belong to as their own way out, then... You will witness the boundaries of gaming expand. You will witness a true masterpiece.

If you loved the original for its great characters and well-paced story – stay away from this game. However, if you’re aching to sink into the depths of depression, or just want to cut some throats and burn some zombies – Part II will deliver. [Issue#247, p.72]
