Of particular note is the different ways you can approach every single scenario, from stealth to the different weapons, or even melee (which is actually extremely fun).

Now to get to the part that is apparently polarizing: the story. I personally find it a brave effort that is often profound. It's very visceral and made me empathize with characters in a way that I never thought they could do. Having said that, it is certainly not for everybody. It is full of pain, grief, and violence, and that can get exhausting for some. For those that are worried about the polarity in opinion, I think it is probably because the people that are upset wanted a continuation of the same story elements they saw in the first game, but were angry and confused when the game decided to take things in a new direction and explore different themes. My advice would be to relax and let the game tell you the story it wants to tell.

My 10/10 score for the game is not to say that the game is perfect. No game is perfect. There are certainly problems with the pacing, and the skill trees and upgrades have not evolved enough, but these issues were never enough to detract from my experience with the game.

Well the Graphics are all good and at some places the details are really nice but that was it.

-Gameplay is really weak, you don´t have fun moments or thrilling moments gameplay wise. The Gameplay is more a chore you have to do to progress the story. There is not a thing in it that a other game already did better, so if you play games like these you will not be surprised. -Atmosphere

-Atmosphere gets hit really big. A problem naugthy dog always had but in game are very unrealistic scenarios that kills the game for me. Like in uncharted were the ground beneath you just did crumble too often, or young Nathan gets suddenly chased by 20+ agents and makes out of it. Here are the same problems with clickers and how stupid the characters behave(so you can have a dramatic story).

-The story, well not everyone is a troll hat spends the whole day online. Some people read great stories in books and game from time to time. To say it simple if it would be a book I would throw it away after reading. This is not a good story, it has an over focus on drama. These people probably think a good story comes out of how painful it is for the characters in it, like some artist that thinks true Art comes from painting an Image mostly black. But overall structure, deepness, play between the different strings the story sets out gets ignored. So this game is. The story wants to show you a big drama by not good structured means and comes with very forced acts. Probably the writers did loose themselves in their personal vision. A story does not need a happy ending to be good, but these story delivers just an emptiness no deeper message you could also have shown in a Call of duty, probably the message you get is that everything is bad.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Let's start with scholarly reviewed and scientifically proved results, shall we? To show that we, the gamers, did not give low scores because we are homophobic or close-minded.
So, video game researchers have found out about the special bonds between the player and the avatar, when we are experiencing a video game experience, we, are our characters. We emotionally immersed in the game and become that character. When we play AC2, we are Ezio Auditore, when we play Uncharted, we are Nate Drake, when we play CoD4, we are Soap. That's why when Ezio Auditore trys to sneak into the enemy stronghold and got spotted, then forced to go berserk, you as the player will say: "y'all forced me, I didn't wanna kill you all!"
Thus, when we play The Last of Us, we are the family man who was forced into the smuggler, we are the father figure who lost his treasure, we are the mercenary who unprofessionally developed a father-and-daughter relationship his the "shipment"; We Are Joel.
We love Ellie, of course, who doesn't love their daughter. Who doesn't love the little girl who put the hope of the whole damn world on her shoulders when she was still that young. But we love Joel more, because that is us. We don't say it though, because we are "Michael" from "Long live play", that's what we do. We don't brag about our achievements, we've saved the world for more than 50 times already, different worlds. That is the biggest mistake of ND for this game. What charms us about TLoU, is not Ellie, is not the adventure, is the relationship between Joel (us) and Ellie. You remove one, you remove us.
So ND did not kill Joel, the male main character of TLoU. He killed us. In a way that, let me quote Deadpool on this one, "That's just LAZY writing." People don't let their guard down in a post-apocalyptic world, especially the type of people who Joel is, a survivor. If you tell me that age has got on Joel that he is not as fast, as strong, as persice, or even as smart, I will be OK with it. But you tell me Joel is not as vigilant and walked into a trap? That's just LAZY.
But I'm OK with killing off Joel. The franchise has to move forward, and as a media scholar, I respect that. But ND clearly missed out on the second charm of the first TLoU: Joel's final decision.
The first game is created around the battle between the sense and the sensibility. It started from the part where the G.I. was ordered to shoot Joel and his daughter, to the argument between Joel and his partner, to the relationship development between Joel and Ellie, ended with Joel's final decision: screw the world, family first.
Sensibility and emotion, has been the decision-making guideline throughout the whole game. This was also the decision-making guideline throughout the second game as well, until Ellie's last decision: letting Abby walk. That is why the decision feels so, weird. I am not saying let Abby walk is wrong, but the writing did not provide strong enough support for the players to make the same decision with the provided guideline of Sensibility and Emotion.
Keep in mind, the theme of the game is not revenging Joel, it's revenge for OURSELVES. Joel did not kill Abby's father, we killed him, because he was trying to kill our freaking daughter, whatever the reason maybe! Was it wrong? Of course. Is Abby justified to kill us? Sure! So is it justified that we kill Abby to revenge OURSELVES? You better say yes! So in the end, ND was not asking us to let Joel's murderer walk, they were asking us to let OUR OWN murderer walk. If you have good reasons and give the players the chance to sync with Abby and let the players become Abby, it's might actually work. Yet, the writing was so poor and the theme of the game was so solidly set that I don't even want to play as Abby at all. Hell, I don't even want to watch the walkthrough for that part. The writing of this game is too weak. The whole game is following your sensibility and emotion, and in the end, ND broke the consistency and make a decision that is 100% the opposite of it. No wonder it feels so wrong.
So this game tells me two things. 1st, there are a lot of dumb people working in high places in big corporations. 2nd, video game makers, please consult academic researchers to make sure that you know what your targeted audiences think. Because right now, ND is clearly pissing off their main targeted audience: video game players.
2 points, one for the hard work of making the game, one for the graphics.

I hope that in the future games will also be developed in the direction of film, and an equal medium will be created, matching the narrative level of the greatest masterpieces of cinematography, but with the possibility of delving into and interacting with the presented world. I am not surprised that tlous2 is criticized for the plot, since there are also important and outstanding films in the cinema and very hated by ideologically aggressive people, because they contain ideally disputed themes - for example, I will quote the title of the film Ida, which in a nutshell talks about the life choices of the main heroine, and the accused of the creator of promoting anti-Polishness, where this is an obvious abuse. A similar mechanism worked in relation to the latest ND work. It was enough to raise controversial topics, and all the content hidden somewhere between the poems, which were the clue of the whole story, became invisible to blind blind critics, who did not understand what was the most important and what was only a support or an excuse.

When The Last of Us (part 1) came out, I fell in love with the game: the story, the characters, gameplay, the scenery, everything. The story of a father who lost his daughter, but then regains his fatherhood by saving a girl that could potentially be the basis for a way out of the apocalypse. The father, Joel, is a classical hero of the story, with whom the player identifies, because Joel is the survivor that takes risks to protect the most valuable, yet vulnerable person, Ellie, and fights against the badness of the world in order to save the world (finding a cure). You witness the father-daughter love forming between the two, which builds the core of the story. The end goal of the whole narrative was: Ellie, who is immune to the disease, could be the source for victory, the ending to the Cordyceps nightmare. She's the key. So I expected the Last of Us II would continue to develop this path: Joel and Ellie trying to save the world. Figuring out, how to make use of Ellie's immunity to fight the disease. With Joel, our hero, in the center of the story - together with his daugter. (SPOILERS!) But then TLoU2 came out and none... absolutely NONE of the expected happened. Joel gets brutally killed off by a transsexual nobody by walking in on a trap he would have never walked in in TLoU1. Then, Ellie tries to take revenge - and fails. In the contrary: The player is forced to play the killer of Joel, is forced to control the evil who has already won by killing the hero of the story. On top of this already awful continuation, Ellie outs herself as being gay, so the last hope for mankind by introducing her immune genes into the future genepool of humanity by giving birth to a lot of immune children, has died too. In short: Everything that made me love The Last of Us part 1 was thrown overboard in order to give space for a social justice propaganda sausage fest. None of it makes sense, none of it makes it fun to play. You'd think that during an apocalypse people would have higher priorities than gender identity, lesbian sexual intercourse after weed consumption and bad feelings from the past. The Last of Us 2 is basically as empty as a James Bond story where James Bond is killed in the beginning of the story: None of what follows makes sense anymore, except for the vengeance of his death, which, in the end, fails too, leaving a total vacuum behind. Also, this review is a year in the making. I unfortunately was unable to leave a review when the game game out because all negative reviews were locked. Loved TLOU1 and Left Behind. My two favorite games ever. TLOU2 is a complete departure from the first entry. The good: For the most part, Ellie and Dina had a cute relationship. It was nice to see Ellie happy post - Joel. The flashback scene at the museum with Joel and Ellie made me cry. Very beautiful. The graphics are phenomenal and the gameplay is, well TLOU gameplay. These games are story driven, but you’re not playing Arkham Knight or God of War here. It is what it is. The bad: depressing. It’s not edgy. The story is horribly paced. It uses every plot device in the book to make its point, and literally completely ignores any type of character development from the first game so that the story can push in the direction the writers think it needs to go. Forcing us to play as a new character didn’t work in Metal Gear solid 2, and it surely doesnt work here. Abby is given every dirty trick in the book to try to convince the viewer to sympathize with her but it doesn’t work. Playing with cute dogs? Wow ok. Then later in her arc she’s literally brutally murdering her friends because she met a little boy (from the enemy faction no less) a few hours earlier. There’s no payoff to the story. They should’ve left Joel and Ellie out of this game and subbed in completely néw characters if this is what they were going to do. Joel is dead, Ellie is figuratively dead (absolute no where for her character to go in a 3rd installment), Tommy is dead, Jesse is dead, Dina ran away, and so basically every trace of the first game was buried in this game. It’s horrible fan service and the reason why this game didn’t sell well (Sony/ND isn’t even listing the total sales since release because they’re embarrassing). The positive reviews were bought by ND. If you really want to see what people think about this game, watch play throughs from YouTubers. There’s no reason to give this game or any Last of Us IP title a dime of your money ever again. ND and Sony ruined one of the best video games ever. This was so bad I’m actually switching to Xbox when i get a gen 5 console.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. We finished the game in 2 days. My beginning thoughts: If we’re going to have a new storyline, market it right. Don’t blind us into a game where you marketed it as Ellie & Joel then introduce a whole new city of characters, characters we didn’t even want to play. Maybe this type of storyline would work in the 3rd installment, for you don’t even get to play as Joel, and you play as Abby more than Ellie. Why would we want to play as the enemy? Why would we want to play as the enemy when fighting Ellie? Why would we go all this way to fight Abby to have her be let go? This is why The Last of Us gets a low rating: - I don’t appreciate how Joel died so early in the game as well. We could have at least played as him for halfway, or we could have known about his death and let up to it later in the game, not the 2nd scene already. - The cutscenes were barely there and all over the place. You play for so long for one cutscene. Then at the end there’s cutscene after cutscene.
    - why does Abby get a workbench every 5 seconds, gets all this good guns & crafting gear, then when you play as Ellie you get a workbench once a day. We barley tried when playing Abby and she got all these good gear & looting as the story progressed. The whole time playing the game we just thought it was pretty stupid. It was hard to play when we didn’t want to play it, but we had to see what happens next. While I do appreciate the scenery and backgrounds in this game, I just think Naughty Dog knew this was a money maker and wanted to **** it up regardless knowing they would make money anyway. Also, did anyone notice how many Asians were killed in this game or was it just me?

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I finished the game yesterday and had been waiting in anticipation for this game for months. The hype was real. Naughty Dog has the reputation of making magic with video games and I'd hoped that TLOU2 would be a masterpiece too. The game starts off slow with rustic guitar piece all familiarising you with the setting that this is based in. Humanity has survived and they have build settlements with electricity and other niceties, life seems to go on within such settlements oblivious to the ongoings of the outer world. Jackson is one such community. Joel and Ellie live here with other support cast (Tommy, Dina and Jesse). They are estranged owing to what happened in the first part. Yet they have some fondness for each other. Joel is killed off almost immediately by Abby in spite of the fact that he just saved her (Motive : Abby's father was killed by Joel while trying to rescue Ellie from the hospital). Yet I'd have preferred some empathy for a man that just saved her life. Also it was anti climactic to see Joel being so naive and walk into a trap. This sets Ellie on crazy revenge path. They (Ellie, her girlfriend Dina, Tommy and Jesse) go to Seattle separately and start knocking WLF numbers down. WLF is the group that Abby is part of. They kill of Abby's friends and this ticks Abby off and she kills few of Ellie's and just about the time she is to kill Ellie (15 hours into the game), we are set onto Abby's flash back (Frustrating). The game now forces us to relive what Abby was doing for three days when Ellie was killing her friends. This is a solid ten hour nightmare with a person that you have been bought to hate. Extremely inconsequential stuff with random NPC's added (Lev and Yara), you do fetch quests for them, forge relationship with Owen (Teenage sweetheart who is married) and manage to survive while being an outcast from WLF. Also by the end of ten hours you don't start empathizing with Abby but are rather focused on getting over the tedium and completing the game. The gameplay mechanics while upgraded (jump, prone, rope usage etc.) are nothing to write home about and the shooting is exactly the way it was - clunky. The animations are fabulous and so is the art direction, the game looks like every last ounce of PS4 Pro's graphical prowess has been extracted There are wide open spaces which are awe inspiring and beautiful. You'd be able to visualise the nature in all its glory. However every destination needs you to enter a dingy dark building filled with infected, use the environment in some twisted way or fight random group of enemies. I used to dread when the game required me to go somewhere which was more than two blocks away. The stealth works just till it doesn't and the enemy AI is laughable. Now since you have put 20 odd hours (10 of them as Abby), you really need a fantastic climax to make it worth it. But to our dismay once we are bought back to present in the theater, nothing of that sort happens and an ancillary character Lev belonging to SCARS (WLF's nemesis) clan (had saved Abby's life) requests Abby to not kill Dina & Ellie and Abby agrees. Next off we are shown that Ellie and Dina are living the perfect farm life with Dina's son keeping them company (The game doesn't end here too).Tommy who miraculously survived getting shot, stirs the hornets nest by stating that he knows where Abby is. This sets off Ellie on one another mission (Noooooo). The game by this point feels drab and dragged by 10 hours. Ellie rescues Abby only to state that she can't let her go and they fight and finally when Ellie has the upper hand she decides to forgive Abby and move on. Now if this is what she had to do why did she make us go through the pain of playing for twenty five hours while convincing us that she'd kill every one of them. Where this morality came from at the most inopportune moment. The game has no real story arc and you'll not connect with any of the characters including Ellie. The game tries too hard to please everyone and also be a maverick/trend setter but forgets the core which got us to love part 1 ; that is story telling and relatable characters, everything else is just a fancy garnish. Games like shadow of the Colossus and the original the last of us were able to pull this off because they successfully put me inside the main characters head, made me see things from their point of view. This game is long awaited and absolutely worth the wait. The first game didn't need a sequel but I'm so glad it got one because the gameplay had evolved and the story has progressed. It's dark, is gritty, it's very real. Thank you Naughty Dog for providing this work of art. Best movie I've ever played.

Good graphics, but the game lost its soul. I didn't feel like I was in TLOU world, not to mention the awful choices the director made. it completely ruined the game. this had a lot of potentials. What saddens me is what now? I'm left with this huge void, there is no closure in this game...pfff

It's getting honest feedback on how gut-wrenchingly abominable it is. In reality, mainstream reviewers are being paid to give it good reviews and / or are being threatened with blacklisting for talking about how bad it is. Look at any large Youtuber or third-party entity who has no direct connection to the industry, and the reviews are identical. AngryJoe, Pewdiepie, Tyler1, all rate the game at 1/10 or below.

Why is the game being rated so low? Well, for one very glaring reason that has nothing to do with homophobia. Plenty of games feature gay / non-binary characters, but everyone accepts them because they are amazing - like in Apex Legends.

The utter hate for this game has to do with the fact that in the first two hours, they take half of what made the first game salable - Joel, and brutally murder him. Then, a few hours later, they make you play as the person who murdered him, and they try to get you to sympathize with her actions. Then, the top it all off, at the very end, after playing as Ellie and killing hundreds of people - you don't kill the person who killed your father in the end. Only a psychotic would find this story acceptable or not morally repugnant.

This is probably going to ruin Naughty Dog, but Neil Druckmann and co. are so arrogant as to think that people not liking their game is either due to homophobia or "bots." The reality is that the market will dictate their fate. The company might go bankrupt as a result of this horrible treatment of one of their only franchises, as well as their treatment of fans. Naughty Dog games never had enough depth to warrant high sales rates other than likable / salable characters. Without their characters, their games are boring, linear, and critically lacking in depth. They just killed their best one and then had you play as their killer. They'll probably murder Nathan Drake yet, if they get to even make Unchartered 5. I doubt they would.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. People are destroying this game without even playing it, just because of a few spoiler. Do I prefer this one? No, the first game was better in terms of storytelling.
But this one is awesome, we are looking at the other side of the story. Playing as Ellie and Joel makes us believe that they’re the good guys. Long story short: in TLOU world there are no good or bad guys, everyone just tries to survive. Joel and Ellie killed a lot of innocent people, just like Abby’s father. We are seeing the story on another perspective.
Did I like watching Joel die that way? No, of course. I cried my eyes out because I loved his character, but saying he deserved to die in a better way is far from the truth. He is not a hero, he is a survivor. We would’ve liked to see him die in a better way just because we grow closer to his character in the first game. Secondly, how can you say the gameplay didn’t improve? And don’t let me talk about the graphic, amazing.
So, in conclusion, I understand that you’re shocked because of Joel’s death, I understand you seek revenge towards Abby, but in my opinion Ellie did what was right, she stopped the cycle of violence. I liked also the reference to the first game, Ellie saying to Sam that what scares the most is ending up alone.. that’s the only thing I would change.
I think she deserves a happy ending with Dina and their son. She’s been through too much sh*t to be alone, again. Maybe ND could make a DLC or something.

The two largest twists of the story were completely anticlimactic and a big middle finger to the fans of the first game. You aren't likely to get attached to any of the characters in the new game, which is really shocking for a Naughty Dog title. It's also extremely clear that Naughty Dog had a political agenda when creating this game. Let me be clear, it's not the agenda that makes the story a 0/10. It's the agenda coupled with a complete disregard for what the fan base deems as beloved characters as well as a completely inconsistent story with very little depth. Unfortunate, considering the studios last 5 new gen games had some of the best storytelling in video game history.

Gameplay didn't see much of an improvement over the first game, but it didn't need to improve here. Graphics on the other hand are leaps and bounds greater than the previous game and I didn't even think that was really possible after the first game was remastered for PS4.

Sadly the story is the most important part of any game like this. And the first game was so well done that it was hard for any game to live up to the high bar it set. Unfortunately, this not only didn't reach the bar the first game set, this set that bar on fire as if it never existed.

The first title should've never received a sequel with the same characters if it was to be done so poorly. To me, Last of Us is the only game in this "franchise".

Graphically and gameplay-wise, I have a hard time giving this less than a 7, but because the story is so poorly done, so poorly thrown together and is such an integral part of the franchise that this game is a 5 for fans, a 7 for newcomers. A 6 is fair. This is the Haze of the PS4.

Graphic elements are amazing aaaaaaand then the story happens. Don’t waste your money on this game until it hits the deep discount bin. Such a disappointment after waiting all this time.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I feel people are being unfair to this game. I’ll start with what I don’t like. I don’t like the sections that you play as Abby. It’s not that they’re poorly written, I’m just uninterested in her life and finding out her backstory does not give me any remorse for her. It’s a sad world and bad things happen to good people. Although I do understand why she would be so upset, it doesn’t make me want to brutalize her and her friends any less. I don’t want to play as the villain who’s done such brutal things to characters that I love. I think some people are upset cause you play as a play lesbian. I don’t think everyone who dislikes the game is homophobic, I just think that if it were a man and a woman no one would bat an eye at it. I hear a lot of people saying things like , “I don’t mind that they’re lesbian I just don’t like that a gaming platform is being used for politics. “. To me that means that deep down you don’t like that they’re lesbian even if you don’t want to admit it. I’m also seeing people saying that this game is too dark. In the first game your daughter gets murdered in your arms, you almost get eaten by cannibals, and you doom the human race. I think people just aren’t used to see the characters they love die in such brutal ways and I agree it was awful. That’s what makes the game so compelling. I’ve been watching reviews online too and I can almost guarantee some of these guys haven’t finished the game so their opinion is really invalid, but they get to go online and trash it anyways. The Last of Us Part II is the high point of the PlayStation 4. The plot is controversial, but the game is the incredibly addictive adventure of Ellie, from which it is impossible to pull away from the opening and to the very end.

Not everyone is going to enjoy the motives of The Last of Us Part II. But if you try and manage to accept the subliminal and not so subtle messages as a fact that the world has gone awry and that people have the need to have somewhere or someone to belong to as their own way out, then... You will witness the boundaries of gaming expand. You will witness a true masterpiece.

If you loved the original for its great characters and well-paced story – stay away from this game. However, if you’re aching to sink into the depths of depression, or just want to cut some throats and burn some zombies – Part II will deliver. [Issue#247, p.72]
