This is a brave and strong game. If because of some stupid people developers will stop creating this type of games it will be a great loss.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. First let’s get the pros out the way:
    - The environment is beautiful, honestly one of the best-looking games I’ve played.
    - The gameplay is improved on compared to the first game, not completely overhauled but improvements in upgrading and the addition of new items and ways to improve your skill tree is welcomed and makes the second playthrough viable to max out the character on the new game plus option should you wish to do it.
    - The flashback sequence with Joel and Ellie at the museum was perfect, that should have been the story not what was given, that’s the only point I thought this feels like The last of us in storytelling and I will give praise for that.

    Now onto the negatives...

-The treatment of characters is disgusting, Joel has had his character essentially stripped back to be viewed as a monster compared to original and it just angers me rather than saddens me that his death is handled the way it is and that essentially rather than let the player interpret the original ending in their own way, make it clear in black and white you shouldn't be okay with what he did, that doesn't sit right with me. Everyone on Abby's part of the story I just don't care about, her included because we've spent the entire first game playing Joel's story and seeing his loss and these people kill him and not only are we forced to play as them but sympathise with them? That isn't how I felt. Jesse I liked maybe due to his lack of involvement but then he dies, just out the blue without much drama around it. Tommy at the end is seen as some bitter only out for revenge monster and you can't even blame him.
    - The gameplay is repetitive I found myself getting bored after about 8 hours and the game is about 20/23 hours depending how fast you're going through your first playthrough. It was a slog to play and on the first run that’s not good.
    - The writing in general, its honestly baffling. Ellie making decisions that literally 20 minutes before she states she wouldn't make the plot holes are noticeable. The entire end act of the game is about Ellie being so consumed by revenge that she leaves the life she has with Dina and the baby to kill Abby finally and then by the end, doesn't even do it. I don't understand the point behind this.

I honestly could say a lot more but honestly, I’m just sad, I could be angry which in terms of the writing I absolutely am but overall I’m just sad that my favourite game in the last of us, has received a sequel that honestly, just leaves a bitter taste in my mouth and leaves me not accepting that anything was made beyond the end of part one because i'd rather that was the case. Neil Druckman doesn't deserve the level of abuse he was and likely still is receiving but that doesn't mean you can’t point out that he ruined this sequel and franchise by delivering some cliché revenge is bad story while butchering the very characters that made the last of us what it is. I honestly didn’t expect this, I didn’t expect it to be as good as part one but I definitely didn’t expect it to be such a betrayal of the characters from the original game.

No, this Is not a perfect Game (no Game Is) but i find it to be a huge accomplishment. I Have put some 50 hours into this Game, played it twice, loved it twice. No, i am not a "shill". I went into it with really, really low expectations, the discourse and hate had killed My hype for it. "The story SUCKS" "The Script Is BAD".

Could have been a great continuation of the legendary first part. The whole thing was spoilt by the way that the radical feminist movement influenced the plot, the appearance of the characters and consequently the general impression of the game.

After playing through the game for 25 hours it was clear that this was a massive upgrade to its already incredible prequel. The only downsides were that I was focused on the plot so much I neglected some of the safes that are hidden throughout the game!

The enemies are also vastly improved from the first game and the new infected types are terrifying to encounter for the first time. The human enemies ended up being the tougher enemies at times due to the way the AI functions.

There’s a lot of review bombing and negative comments about the storyline but for me it clicked every harden than the first game. The story is about consequences and the cycle of vengeance and is handedly very poignantly. For people who can’t get over the plot twists, that’s a shame but maybe they can go on to write their own stories and games if they feel they know better? Some of the latter set pieces are as intense as something in a high-budget Hollywood film.

how you gonna make us go through the entire game hell bent on getting revenge while making some questionable decision along the way. Only to have redemption taken away from us right at the end because ellie realizes at THAT! point that the revenge cycle needs to be broken here. Are you kidding me? Abby got her revenge and then some only to have her be shown mercy by ellie. Ellie loses joel, almost looses dina to slaughter, tommy gets shot in the face, jesse gets shot in the head and dies and then ellie leaves dina and their child, loses 2 fingers and all this is directly done by Abby so why in the flying F** should ellie show mercy? Honestly made so mad and disappointed at the end while the credits rolled. I couldn't believe I did all that just for some meaningless self realization of "revenge not being fulfilling".

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. So disappointed to see how all the leaks are true. It really shows how much of a biased circle-jerk that gaming publications are that the reviews for this game are so high. I don't understand how any fans of the original game, or a casual player who owns a PS4, would at all agree with the scores that "professional" critics are publishing.

Yes, the graphic and animations are great. A lot of work went into the graphics and are design, and you can really tell. However, this seems like the only part of the game that any thoughtful development went into.

The mechanics and moment-to-moment gameplay haven't changed whatsoever since the original game was released 7 years ago. And back then, the original game played like an out-of-date action adventure. The Las of Us 2 has the same weak crafting system, same generic and uninspired stealth system that's been in games since the PS4 first came out.

AI is absolutely terrible. Here's an example that happened to me: throw a molotov at a group of infected, other infected (not clickers) run over to stand in the fire to investigate. Human AI are equally bad, at the AI you would expect in something like Fallout 76 or something. They will just run into kill zones where their buddies just died, they will be completely oblivious to bodies or stealth kills right next to them. Like, you'll grab one enemy as a human shield in broad daylight directly in front of 2 other enemies, and they'll be doing the "Oh, what's that sound? I better investigate." animation for 3-4 seconds until you shoot them in the face. This is especially bad as you'll be fighting the exact same 3-4 enemy types throughout the whole game, so the terrible gameplay stays the same through the whole game, which gets boring and fatiguing fast.

So you probably didn't play the first game for it's gameplay, you loved it for the world and plot, which is why you're thinking about the Last of Us 2. Everything you like about the first game is gone. None of the characters have good chemistry or banter with each other, and the characters you like from the first game have had the parts that you loved about them conspicuously removed. New characters in Ellie's side of the story are mediocre at best. If you're that interested in the story, go watch the first couple of hours of the game / cut-scenes on YouTube before you decide to buy.

    *SPOILERS*

Joel dies in the first hour. The Abby character is just as laughable and unrealistic as all the memes say she is. Ellie's character has been turned completely one-dimensional by the start of the game, which is part of the game's weak thesis on cycles of violence and revenge. All the characters put on a forced gruff tone for their voice acting, and have flat and uninteresting dialogue to read off.

At the end of the game, after killing your way through hundreds of people, and other characters who were involved in Joel's death get the bullet, you don't even get the choice of what to do with Abby. Ellie lets Abby live because....cycles of revenge? This lack of choice, and forced direction by the game describes the entirety of the plot and game design.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Very mediocre storyline, everything seems very forced.

Joel's death was extremely forced and dumb, they could have developed a more complex or interesting storyline for Joel's death but no. He encounters some random people in the forest, gets in the basement of a random house and get killed, just like that, the main character from TLOU1 and probably the main character of TLOU franchise gets killed in the most dumb way. Then you play like half of the game with a character you never heard about and you really don't care.

Then, you play with Ellie and the whole storyline about "I must revenge Joel's death but my wife doesn't want to so when I came back she was no longer at home" is extremely cliché.

Oh and by the way, you play hours with Ellie just to finally find Abby and let her go, so you literally played all that for nothing.

I really don't understand what Neil Druckmann was thinking

The movie, unfortunately is a truly mean spirited and ugly affair. You name it - ugly characters, ugly personalities, ugly environments, the The Last of Us Part II has it all. The game seems to be more interested

    Well, in order.

Music - 8 (as for me worse than 1 part)
Gameplay - 6 (in fact, from the 1st part in 2013, I almost did not see anything new in it, this is such an assessment)
Story - 3 (very bad, again, if it were not for 1 part, it would probably be an assessment - 6)
The relationship between the characters and the assessment of minor - 2
The overall rating is 6.5. It would be, but given the reliability and expectations of the game, as well as the time (7 years for a second) of waiting, I put 4 no more.
Even despite the feminism and how the game goes towards the LGBT communities (although the action itself was surprisingly small). The game has a bunch of other minuses, starting from the plot and ending with the ratio of characters to each other.

Incredibly stupid writing where characters keep making idiotic mistakes that cause people to die. Ellies and dinas relationship is creepy, theyre acting like 20years married couple even though theyre barely adults gives me the creeps, nothing wrong with them being lesbians.

Joel dies in a very frustrating way and later half of the game you play as his killer as the game attempts to make her likable. They fail. Miserably. They even make you fight ellie as her. Why??? Nobody likes this she man.

Revenge bad story, who very basic story. The ending is very bad. 1hr waste of time after which abby doesnt even die but instead ellie loses her gf, their baby, 2 of her fingers and she can no longer play the guitar which is something she enjoyed playing. What warranted this?? She saves abbys life and she gets punished for it. What a terrible ending. I get they were going for this bitter sweet deep ending but it just fails. Maybe had abby died in some satisfying manner it would have been bareable but they totally messed this up.

Combat is the same as last game, slight improvements. Its fine, but it gets very tedious especially as the story doesnt hold interest so you get bored with it quick. Especially with having to play as abby for half of the game.

What a disgraceful 2nd part to a phenomenal game.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I've rated this 3/10 mainly for the story. The graphics are honestly absolutely amazing and one of the best I've seen from any video game. Damn. Really good. The gameplay is an improvement on the first one, but in my eyes it's mostly filler in-between the story telling. It plays very well though and does its job. But, this game is mainly about its story and why I so dearly loved the amazing first game. And the story of Part 2 is absolutely terrible, even nonsensical.

I'll start at the beginning and work my way through the story. Obviously major spoilers here. So as we know from the first game, Joel is in deep water with the Fireflies. And as we've seen from the first game, Joel is a very cautious un-trusting man. For an example, a survivor is hurt on the road in the first game but its actually an ambush, Joel knows this and just speeds his car up to run them over and get away. So we know what kind of person Joel is.

So at the beginning of the game, Abby is looking for and ends up finding Joel and his brother Tommy. Joel even SAVES Abby's life here. Does this change Abby wanting to kill Joel at all? Even second guess? No. Joel literally saves her life, and instead of something interesting going on and Abby being juggling this guilt around and thinking about still killing Joel- nope. She doesn't care that that happened at all.. okay. Sure. Boring, but sure. So Abby ends up taking Joel to her friends, and Abby ends up torturing and killing him for thanks for saving her life. Cool. The problem with this is, the scene leading up to this doesn't make any sense.

So we know Joel is a cautious man who knows that he is in a lot of trouble with other people. Right? Yet.. he's shown to be so ridiculously trusting here that these people may as well be his childhood friends or even family. It's so unbelievable for him that you can only think this even happened BECAUSE the story needed it to, not what the characters would do. Joel follows Abby and her friends inside the house, who proceed to lock the door behind him and start to crowd around him. Joel tells them his name and him and Tommy told Abby his name earlier. So Joel is just following this girl he's never met before into a house of all of her friends, who proceed to lock the door behind him and crowd around him. And he's just.. doesn't react at all, like its normal. What?

Then, another nonsensical thing is Ellie comes to his rescue. Opens the door in the house to see Abby beating Joel to death. Ellie has a gun in her hand. She's standing outside the door and watching this happen. Does she shoot right then and there? No. She rushes inside to get tackled to the ground and that scene plays out. Really? Have these characters all lost their brains?? What is going on here? It doesn't make sense and it's not what these characters would do.

I don't have enough words so I'll have to come to my next biggest gripe. This story just plays out and does things that make no sense at all, and characters do things they wouldn't do just so Ellie can feel sad. One big example I have here is Mel.

Ellie kills people left and right, literally kills a dog ten seconds earlier and calls it stupid, but once someone has a baby OH NO! She gets absolutely heart broken over killing, well, not really the person but just the baby. And they don't mention the baby at all previously? Not once? Like 'please don't kill me I have a baby'. No, the pregnant woman just tries to straight up fight Ellie and dies and THEN they reveal it of course. Cool. And in a later cutscene you can easily see how pregnant she is, she's literally looking 8 months pregnant and just about to give birth, seriously. Her belly is HUGE, but she 'hides' it when Ellie's killing her with a jacket like that somehow magically conceals it. Right. That, and their group actually wanted her to go out and do grunt work, patrol around and basically go to the 'front line' while being that pregnant. Abby even says she can get off the assignment if she asks but 'no, I don't want to sit around'. But.. you want to be around dangerous situations that could hurt your baby? Shooters, clickers? What if she takes a fall? What is this reasoning? And this pregnant woman (Mel) is mad about the way Abby killed Joel with the golf club, but during a flashback cutscene, Mel also wanted to kill Tommy and Ellie too to leave no witnesses.. what? Are you serious? What are these characters? And Dina before this is talking about being a burden while being pregnant, Ellie even saying she is, but Mel is just.. good? She's not a burden at all and no one cares?

Final point, Abby finds Ellie after she had killed Abby's friends, including pregnant girl. Abby is in a position to kill them, has killed for less, and killed Joel who killed her dad. So.. why.. doesn't she? She doesn't kill Ellie, let's her go free. Why?

They did not do these characters justice. They ruined them. Only play the first game, skip this one.

Not only is the game itself emotionally draining to play - it tarnishes my wanting to play the first game again. The game looks beautiful and plays very much like the first, but everything that made the previous game exceptional and an utter classic has been stripped from this game (except perhaps the music). It is not enjoyable to play unless you disregard every single cut scene and amputate the gameplay from the story and its completely dislikable characters. Even then, what you are left with is a game that is stunning to look at but is nothing really special to play. Without detailing specifics, I can see why people from every community have expressed concern about the characters. Representation and accurate diversity is important in these times. All character development present within the main characters from the past title seems to have slipped away from the grasp of the writers as the colossal failure that is The Last of Us II attempts to push a deep and engaging plot with a dark tone, when it comes off as nothing more than pretentious. There is absolutely no subtlety in its writing as it pushes its message in your face, spoon feeding it to you by artificially creating impact on the story with mindless carnage. By the time you're near the final hours of the game nothing fazes you anymore. The message was already conveyed long ago and it, personally, didn't mean anything to me when I finished the game. When the credits rolled, I sat there on my couch, saddened. Not by the events of the story, but rather by the wasted potential of this sequel. Something that could've been, but never did. The only thing that was redeemable about this was the graphics, which was already expected from a PS4 game, a console at the end of its life-cycle thus optimized to hell. I wasn't a particular super fan of this series, and to those who were... I can only offer you all my sincere condolences.

Everyone is painfully ugly but on purpose, it's part of the aesthetic that takes a long time to get used to. It's like the video game equivalent of a Bill Plympton film.

Repetitive gameplay with mechanics that just don't make any sense. Weapons system was taken from BotW, and NaughtyDog decided that was too fun, so they made it even clunkier with no reason thematically or logistically it would fit in the game world. Not as glitchy as you'd expect.

The game attempts to feel open world, or somehow create the illusion that it's not an interactive movie (Some levels will have a sneaking route AND a kill everyone route), but at the end each solution the developers chose for you is extremely scripted and linear. It taunts you by pretending that you have some agency, but it's just choosing which quasi-QTE you play through.

The writing is just as bad as everyone else has said. Maybe worse. Druckman wants to be Kojima, but working with his mid-70's IQ score makes you realize just how insufficient he is.

However, it’s missing the key parts we loved about the first game: great charismatic characters, controlled creativity in the ways they tell you the story (for the second game the creativity got out of control and exists for the sake of existing, not for the plot development purposes) and people’s dark essence shown in the most casual way with some grey morale partially excusing them.

Oh and the gameplay hasn’t changed much since the first game, but this feels so small in comparison to other problems...

On the bright side, the creativity in the plot development and the courage to go for big moves is still there (I kinda liked big twists in the beginning and middle of the game), but the ability to handle them and turn into great characters and plot is just missing. Naughty Dog should look for someone like Bruce Straley to balance out the creative director, his presence is very missed and evident in this game.
