This is by far one of the best narrative driven games of this generation. This game is better than the original in pretty much every way. I'm giving it a 10 out of 10 but it doesn't mean it's without its flaws. However, the emotional impact it will have on you will make you ignore its imperfections. Amazing game.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Leveldesign, Cutscenes and Gameplay are as awesome as they were with its predecessor, and the racial diversity and LGBT representation were written so well into the game, that they - for the most part - do not feel overly forced or on the nose, but the good part stops right there. the story is so incredibly flawed that it cannot be more than a four. There are several weird plotholes that made absolutely no sense to me, like joel’s stupidity leading to his death, or the fact that the people hunting joel for ruining the cure don’t take ellie with them to at least try something with her immunity. there has to be more than one doctor alive.
But the biggest problem ist the arrogant idea to manipulate the player into liking abby by having to play as her for 40 percent of the game. There was no coming back from torturing joel to death after he saved her live. I just straight forward despised her for the whole game and felt disgusted to play her. And the way the tried it was too obvious and so pushy it was kind of insulting to the player. That really ruined the whole game for me.

A top contender for GOTY 2020. What sets this game apart from everything else is its story which is of the calibre that classic literature belongs to.

Our favorite characters from the first game are back: Joel, Ellie, Tommy, and his wife Maria. The vastly talented Ashley Johnson and Troy Baker are back, and joined by the wonderful Laura Bailey, with an intricate, thoughtful story, full of allegory and metaphor, written by Neil Druckmann and Halley Gross.

This is not a rehash of the same story from the first game. Instead, it is a cautionary tale about revenge and its collateral damage, masterfully weaved between complex, interesting characters, that evokes comparisons to classic literature and film such as True Grit, Wuthering Heights, and Count of Monte Cristo. In the end, you realize the game is less about revenge itself, and more about what it takes to move past, heal, and grow beyond an emotionally traumatic event. This applies individually to multiple characters, not just for Ellie (the main character), and should be compared and contrasted against each other.

The genre is clearly horror-tragedy, which has not been really seen in video games, especially the tragedy themes. Many players will not be expecting nor used to interpreting the tragic themes that the story offers, and instead opt to calling it "depressing", which albeit true, is rather reductive and ignorant. The Green Mile and the Titanic were film tragedies, but to disregard them as merely depressing films would be incorrect.

My only criticisms for the story involve pacing issues in 2nd half (but prior to epilogue), and a romance scene that felt sudden and forced. This is a long game, averaging 30 hours of game play to finish, with many storylines involving different characters. If there ever was a "double album" for video games, that would be this game.

All else, this is a complex, deep story that requires thinking and reflection to fully appreciate. This is not Call of Duty or Super Mario Bros. Players unwilling to reflect and analyze about the events of the story will fail to appreciate the story for its depth and breadth of the human condition. They will argue about plot holes and ridiculous story.

This is definitely a well crafted story that plays with one's emotions - creating anger, confusion, and conflict in the player at various points in the journey. But it all makes sense when everything comes together in the end.

    9.6/10 rating from me.

    Beware of negative reviews that:
    1) Say phrases such as "my day is ruined" - that phrase belongs in a therapy session, not an honest review
    2) Make comparisons to Star Wars or comic book movies (reviewer is not well-read enough to think of more appropriate comparisons)
    3) Claims the game's story disrespects the player.
    4) Attempt to make comparisons between Neil Druckmann and Hideo Kojima (senseless for a review to argue who is better)
    5) Uses transphobic meme comments such as "It's Ma'am" (not funny anymore guys)
    6) Alleges forced diversity of characters - completely false
    7) Makes blanket statements about atrocious story without explaining why - present in nearly all negative reviews
    8) Have bad grammar, spelling, and punctuation.
    9) Written by individuals who obviously did not play the entire game.

But the highs were so worth it in the end. The game was really damn depressing but it also had beautiful moments, and I think those moments were elevated by the contrasting dour elements of the game. Considering all the technical aspects of the game, it surpasses anything I've seen. Not much to be said other than that its a masterpiece in all production elements ranging from the animations teetering on the edge of a truck to Gustavo's score setting the mood during a cutscene. Gameplay became repetitive, but after replaying a bit more with different custom difficulties I found myself enjoying sections of the game just in my free time. My one critique is the same as everyone's, the Abby sections being a bit too long. I just wanted to get through as I never cared for the character as much as Ellie. I understood and empathized with Abby when she was given context but not enough to want to play 8-10 hours of her on what felt largely like sidequests. But when the game returns to Ellie's perspective, the game reached its high point.

The themes are so many more than just revenge. The game personally hit me with thoughts about forgiveness, regret, moving on from things we can't change, but most of all, appreciating the good things we have, because they don't last forever. And when they do leave us, we just need to learn, believe in ourselves and bet that future days will be better.

For me, the game was a 4 act structure, or at least was easy to talk about that way. There is Jackson Intro, Ellie Seattle, Abby Seattle, and the end. Each of these were so different I could rate them individually. Jackson was a 9 and could have been higher if it was longer, Ellie's Seattle was probably an 8 as it dragged on a bit, Abby's Seattle was a 7 because it basically had the same issues as Ellie's Seattle but with less emotional connection to the characters, and the ending being a strong 10. I think a 9 is a good rating based off of my experience.

It shows a different side to Ellie and aren’t any real “good and bad guys”. I think Naughty Dog could have flowed the game a little better by maybe showing Joel killing Abbeys father before Abbey shows up in Jackson and kills him to make us feel more sympathy towards Abbey but instead they killed Joel first then told Abbey's story. After she kills Joel, we automatically hate her and the rest of the former fireflies that are there and no matter what there backstory was, we won’t forgive them. Expand

Honestly what a piece of **** **** Even the incredible combat system and outstanding graphics aren’t enough to redeem this game of its terrible story. So this game is Ellie trying to kill Abby, so why the **** do we play as Abby. The theatre scene when you’re playing as Abby trying to kill Ellie pissed me the **** off because it makes no sense. You expect us to care about Abby when we see her torture Joel, pop Jessi in the face, shoot out Tommy’s eye, and nearly kill Dina? **** that shrek step sister looking ass **** And we wanna see her literally get ****ed? I almost threw up when I saw that ****’s man **** And that **** ending. You’re telling me Ellie tortures Nora and gets about 5 tactical nukes from killing all those **** scars and wolfs but at the end, the person that she killed everyone for gets to live. The message at the end was supposed to be “revenge is bad” but it’s not a good message considering all you do in this game is kill ****ers. I’m literally never gonna play this game again in my life, I’ve played the first one about 6 times and I could still go back to it and have a blast. To say I'm disappointed would be an understatement. I feel like I just lost a good friend. Without going into a ton of detail, the story almost completely misses the mark for me personally. Poor pacing, inconsistent and unbelievable character motives and behaviors, plot holes and coincidences galore, baffling plot decisions...it's just such a shame. To be clear, despite those problems, it's not a bad story. It's quite good in some ways. But the direction was just way off for me personally.

The animation, voice acting, level design, and world they've created are amazing. Gameplay gets tedious and grueling, but I can deal with it. The only problem with the game is the story, but that's really its big pull. I don't know how they could get the original so right and the sequel so wrong. Also, I had no problem with any of the supposed "SJW" elements in the game. They didn't feel like a focus and didn't detract from the story.

Honestly, I'm not at all interested in the Last of Us' world anymore. I don't even think I would play a part 3, and I hope they don't make one. Maybe after the shock wears off I'll feel differently. I hope Naughty Dog licks their wounds and learns from their mistakes on this one. Lots of people love the direction the game's story took. I can only say I can't disagree more.

Thematically it alludes to the idea that helping others is what brings you peace. Sometimes those two things appear to be one and the same. This is called The Last of Us. Not The Happiest of Us. Joel was never a "good guy" and his death was a long time coming. He is a self admitted "hunter" and ultimately doomed the human race. Expand

I’m not sure why this game is getting so much hate? I thought it was a poetic masterpiece. Not to mention the incredible level of detail in the fighting mechanics, sound design and world. Rant: I am disappointed at the false hate on the game. Just because Joel died doesn't mean the game is doo doo. Many of these people are babies that saw their favorite youtubers disliking the game and hate comments from other babies and assume to hate too. The worst part is most of these dummies didn't even watch or play the game which is absolutely immature. Imagine working years on a game your insanely proud of just to be hated on and called crap because of your bosses belief or a character dying. Btw the story was phenomenal and I actually liked Abby's character. People only hate the game because they are FORCED to hate the game. If people even speak their mind they are shamed or yelled at which is ridiculous by babies who haven't played the damn game. I also played the game blind and didnt watch any leaks or spoilers which is why I enjoyed it so much. Also, dunkey is a godamn champ for being true to what he thought about the game and speaking facts.

No one cares about Abby No one cares about the society irl Most people play games to have a break from real life and dive into an adventure that upon finish they can smile and remember for the good part of their youth and or life. Right off the bat agendas seem obvious when ellie kinda felt uncomfortable. Then Abs is what abs is. Then lev/lily omg give me a break. Lily/lev s storyline.. Why?? Everyone I cared about in this game died and everyone I wanted dead stayed alive. Ffs
Killing Joel killed the game for me. Even though Joel wasn't the Joel from the first part. Not killing Abby is the icing on the cake. Ellie is not the ellie I know. Ellie going crazy is where I'm starting to rethink why on earth did I even go along with this **** after what happened in Jacksonville.

    >Joel foolishly believed he could trust outsiders when he was NEVER like that to begin with.
    >Kill off Joel without him saying much to Abby, and no lastwords to Ellie.
    >Force us to play Abby, the one who took Ellie's father Joel away from her.
    >You changed Ellie's looks... to where she's unrecognizable in some aspects compared tothe first game.
    >Made the game way too easy.
    >While you managed to make the world feel somewhat immersive, you still made it feel super empty.
    >The Seraphites were a knockoff of Eden's Gate from Far Cry New Dawn.
    >Gave us a bittersweet first ending where Ellie settles down with Dinah but it still felt lonely, then made everything go go **** with PTSD.
    >Made a tortured Ellie travel a far far way to kill Abby, BUT ONLY TO SPARE THE ENEMY. There was NO reason to let all of those killings be in vain. The real Ellie believed that it couldn't be for nothing. Nobody would have hunted down Ellie or anyone else if Abby was killed. Joel was literally just saving his daughter from being murdered, and then he had to pay with his life. Ellie lost her father with the last memories of him being beaten to death, into a bloody pulp. So she let's the one that caused her so much pain and agony go, unjustified mercy. Abby got so many people on both sides killed. So Abby also takes Ellie's two fingers from her. Who thought this was a good idea?
    >after all that, Dina leaves her. You killed Joel, but you turned Ellie's lide into HELL.
I knowhow the review system works for the most part, but I doubt the official reviews were genuine in any way, shape, or form. Anything bellow a 5 is pretty much negative. So this 2 was well deserved. The idea you were still able to get 5 and up is disgusting. The only thing good about this game was the strong attention to physical detail, but that's really it. This was one of the greatest disappointments for me. I over looked the PC stuff that even I'm personally opposed to, only to find out it really doesn't matter because either way, this was one of the largest media failures in a long while. Now ND can't even take the criticism and try to do right by people. May they go bankrupt. I've signed the petition to urge Sony to rework TLOU Part 2's story. Maybe they can replace Druckmann with somebody worthy of giving the Last of Us the sequel it actually deserves. I can only hope

In the attempted process of asserting itself as a thesis on hate, this installment unfortunately only succeeds in displaying the shallower and all-too-familiar tenets of aggravating pacing and moral and emotional pedantry. The characters in this game (both new and old) morph jarringly from familiar and honest depictions of themselves into the clumsy caricatures into which Naughty Dog has shaped them; it seems not even the flawless performances by its triple-A cast could offset the disappointment of watching a beloved character act as though their scenes exist in a vacuum. The player is constantly subjected to the self-sabotaging efforts of the protagonists and antagonists alike, as each seemingly (but defensibly, given the pace of the game) forgets why they have made their own decisions. Here the studio suffers from the juvenile mistake of superimposing their priority of telling a story over the character's validity; the main characters all-too-frequently appear not as interesting players in an enthralling narrative, but more as commissioned actors under strict instruction to stick to a script that lacks focus or direction. Simultaneously, in a half-baked yet fully committed effort to elicit a response, the studio makes several bets with the player before investing exclusively on those least interesting among them: we are introduced to several original, intriguing subplots, only to be assigned exclusively to the one-dimensional and utterly unlikable main antagonist. The justifications for her exaggerated role in the story inevitably fall flat, resulting in the unanswerable questions of why such a cookie-cutter villain should take up so much of the story. There is simply not a satisfactory reason for the sustained presence of this character in this game.

The gameplay itself offers the most consistent alleviation of what is otherwise a flawed and dissatisfying experience. Several adaptations both major and minor were made to the already-solid control scheme and general layout of the preceding game, which make the combat encounters and exploration in this game feel much more thrilling, challenging, and realistic. The added maneuverability of being able to crawl, climb, and squeeze through tight spaces undoubtedly allows the player to experience much of the panicked, adrenaline-fueled momentum of the game's various skirmishes. Nevertheless, each perfectly-executed scene is tainted by the overhanging knowledge of how unrewarding the game is capable of being whenever there isn't anything to shoot at. Interlaced between what appear to be earnest attempts to ignore the tonal appeal of the series, the story occasionally delivers the promised peerless cinematic triumphs of which this game is clearly capable; when the script backs away from the opportunity to needlessly moralize and vapidly entertain to instead focus on the characters and how they would legitimately interact, the award-winning merits of the writers, actors, and animators shine through. Unfortunately, that ray of hope is too often strangled by the script's demands for misbegotten nonsense as opposed to thoughtful progression: if you are hoping for a cohesive narrative from this game, you are much better off sticking to the trailers.

If Naughty Dog had managed to tell a sensible, compelling story as a reward for the fans who have waited so long to hear it instead of prioritizing the cheap shock value this game is powered by, then the considerable improvements to gameplay as well as the depth of the emotional potential of the narrative would have made this the masterpiece that fans deserve. It is truly a shame that instead we have instead been distributed such a careless, disingenuous installment.

I love that you saw both sides of the story and made you realise (more) that there’s no good or bad. It’s all about perspective.
Of course I don’t LOVE Abby but I understand her. She made some **** up decisions but so did ellie. I love how the game showed their way of dealing with loss and anger etc and how at the end the stoped that circle of revenge and how they both Abby and Ellie grew from that.
Of course it’s not that much of a happy game as expected and there’s not really a “happy ending” but it’s close to realistic which I kinda loved. The only thing I didn’t like is the fact that we played for Abby for that long and the part where we had to fight Ellie as Abby (I liked that part but hated that I had to hurt Ellie it was pretty intense..) I if I kinda liked that though but yeah overall if you really think this game and see it the way the writers and producers wanted to you will enjoy it as much as I did probably. But either way it’s worth giving it a shot but actually finish the game and not leave it to actually understand the point of the game.
