This is a Brutal game in many aspects. It looks beautiful, it sounds beautiful and it plays beautifully. At the same time It's like watching a Clint Eastwood movie, so it's emotionally challenging and taxing. I believe that 's the reason a lot of people dislike it but that is not to say this is not objectively a good game, make no mistake, this IS a very good game.

This game is a technical masterpiece. Incredible gameplay and world building through exploration. Lots of people can't cope with the story, because some bad things happen to beloved characters. This is subjective- lots of fans want challenging storytelling, rather than pandering fairytales. The world of The Last of Us II is screwed up- of course things are going to get dark.

If you have only watched gameplay online or read spoilers, you should still try playing this game - after all, it's a video game- not a film. It needs to be played- you will be put into the shoes of some very complex characters, but if you invest the time, the payoff is incredibly moving (and redemptive!)

I am suspicious of all the negative reviews before it was possible to complete this 26+ hour film- I think lost of people just saw spoilers or streamers playing and decided it was trash. But you should only take reviews seriously that have actually played the game- not everyone will love it, but many will think it's an even better game that the first! I actually might consider myself among them- gotta start my second playthrough to be sure :)

(Spoiler free) The Last of Us part 2, is an experience that will push your buttons, make you hate the developers, make you curse at its charecters, will make you cry because you can't control your anger anymore. Naughty Dog has always rewarded our faith with their games. Except for this one. This game will either build you up to a better you, or make you hate Naughty dog for the rest of your life. Sometimes we get so attached with certain emotions that we lose sight of what's right and what's wrong. This is the game where you will feel wrong when you do the right things, and you will feel right, doing the wrong things. The game will make you question your morals and ethics with everything you go through in this game. With a near flawless gameplay mechanics , and breathtaking visuals you are about to experience something that you don't want to experience , but is necessary to experience as human beings. The Last of Us part 2, is an incredible game. However, as a Gamer I may never be able to forgive Naughty dog because of the mental breakdown they put me through, because of one thing which I can't mention because of spoiler purposes. But maybe one day, I'd like to try. My rating as a Gamer- 7/10

The ending it very drawn out and unnecessarily bad and defeats the whole purpose of the game. I think Naughty Dog spent too much time “empowering everyone” that they lost sight of that was important. This game stopped being The Last of Us halfway when the player is forced to play as Abby. No matter how much they tried I never cared for her story especially because of the plot structure. There are dozens of ways they could have made this a more compelling game but instead we got an absolute mess of a plot that has no meaning at all until the very end. I didn’t find the game terribly woke but the story itself is the major problem and ruined my memory of the franchise forever. Please don’t make another one. That plea extends to the HBO show too. I do agree that this death was a little bit stupid, they could have done a much better job at setting the scenes that lead to that moment, because this "certain character" had a completely different personality that wouldn't lead to this at all. Gameplay is a bit old fashioned but they managed to make it fresh, and it becomes boring as you approach the end of the game. Animations and cutscene transitions are probably the best I've ever seen in a game. The main point of games is to make you feel invested and that's what this game did, well at least to me. Although the plot can be summarized in one word, the story is the emotin that was shown durin the whole game, it's actually really close to the first game in that department, it is weaker that the first game but it has the same idea where the plot was search for fireflies buf story was Joels coping with loss of his daughter. I would have given this game an average score of 7 but there were some scenes that really binded this whole story together and made it wort to play, at least to me. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Well, while the game has an incredible graphics and improved the first game in gameplay, something that already seemed difficult because the first game is a masterpiece, I was terribly disappointed by some creative decisions, such as the fact that in the preview videos of the game in previous years, it could be seen that Joel was alive during the story, as in the scene where he prevents Ellie from being discovered by the Wolves, a scene that they later replaced with Jesse, in addition to the first preview showing that Joel He accompanies Ellie in her revenge when she is playing the guitar and says "I am going to find and kill every last one of them", so in my personal opinion, they sold me a story and the one I bought was a totally different one, in addition to I do not know a living person who, in his right mind, when his father or father figure is killed in this case, kills everyone and lets the murderer live. I loved the story, I liked the inclusion of Abby, but the fact of killing Joel, made him play every minute with a feeling of frustration. We are waiting for this game for many years, we are going through a pandemic at this time, in which this game would have made a difference, by making the lives of many happy this year, that we are having a really bad time and that we save money for this game, money that could be spent on more important things. A real shame. Expand

Gameplay and graphics aside(they're amazing), the story is absolutely horrible, we waited SEVEN YEARS to see Joel again, and he gets killed in the most humilliating, incoherent and forced way possible. The false marketing they made with this game is also pathetic. Nobody cares about Abby, no matter how hard they tried to humanize or makes us sympathize with her. Was a huge fan of the original story. Though to be honest, I only played it through once as I wasn't really into the mechanics of the game-play. As you could imagine then, I was only invested in seeing how this fictional world and the characters within it would develop in the sequel (whilst trying to avoid the spoilers of course).
Here's my takeaway after experiencing this lengthy game:

Here's my takeaway after experiencing this lengthy game: ND focused on furthering the dystopian angle together with a revenge-based plot driver, which sounds like the makings of a very compelling and tense game on paper. However, without balancing it with any humanity from any of its characters, the world just feels like a hollow sandbox for clickers, dog murderers and bigots with the central characters feeling artificial because their personalities and actions are just ticking boxes instead of driving a compelling story.
It's a real shame, but I just can't score this above a 4 as it just didn't work for me as a story. Full credits to the design and software teams behind it though, who created a super-high quality graphical experience! I heard that people who work at ND are treated inhumanely during the crunch period, so they deserve much much more than this for their talents!

The story mirrored Uncharted 4 in some of its themes - Nathan & Sam couldn't quit hunting the treasure despite the damage it was doing to their relationships, and the increasing danger to their lives. They had the option to stop and go home several times, but chose to continue anyway. They knew the risk, but had to see it through. It's very human to become focused on one goal, and lose sight of everything else on the way.

TLOU2 requires an amount of emotional empathy on the players part. You will need to think about what is going on in someone else's head. It may not conform to how you feel at the time, but you have to be capable to discard your thoughts and feelings and empathise with someone else. You're an actor in a story, rather than a participant making choices.

Just like the real world, there are no good or bad people. We just do what we think is right at the time, and our actions have either negative or positive consequences, based on your viewpoint. We are all also imperfect - we make mistakes, and we make irrational choices based on our emotions.

The game makes a point of making the player reconsider their first impressions, and perhaps admit to themselves that what they thought originally was not entirely correct. We are all guilty of instantly judging a person based on a single action, without knowing the full context about why they would do it.

"You never really understand a person until you consider things from his point of view… Until you climb into his skin and walk around in it."

I thought the cinematic direction, cinematography, acting and story were all excellent. I found the gameplay very enjoyable too. No game is perfect, but by current gaming standards, this is as good as it gets. 10/10

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Firstly I’m a huge fan of the first tlou, love everything about it, from its story, gameplay and characters! I loved it so much my daughter born in 2017 was named Ellie. Part 2 is a game I have been waiting to play since it’s original tease back in 2016, and a game I was unsure if it should exists or not because of how much I love the first. This game however is a gruesome, dark, beautiful masterpiece! It’s a fantastic piece of entertainment, exactly what you would want from any game, film or any form of entertainment if you were to watch or play. The trailers are misleading (classic naughty dog btw), and the story goes in a way I was not expecting, but that’s the whole point of this game. It intwines the first story with the seconds direction and push it somewhere the fans of the first where not expecting. What would be the point of making a game with the expectation this one carries with a story that was exactly what we expected would happen? It would be a boring, predictable and not enjoyable to play. Games and technology have moved on since the first, and making a sequel like this so long after the original, there would be so much to consider in terms of gameplay and story when making this game, and I personally couldn’t be happier with how it turned out. I was gutted to lose such a loved character in the opening of the game as much as anyone, and new characters lost you grow to love over the course of this game too. Everyone is of course allowed their opinion, but the negative reviews this game is currently receiving from disappointed fans because of the above,I wouldn’t recommend them watching game of thrones anytime soon. This game made me laugh, cry, happy and speechless, it’s an unrivalled journey that only can compare to the journey of the first, but for totally different reasons. The gameplay is fluid, the graphics are exquisite, attention to detail is flawless, and the story is one that is meant to test, upset and surprise you, and it did for me. This for me is a remarkable achievement in video games, and a testament to the quality of the work naughty dog produces without effecting my love for the first game. I will replay this game over and over and enjoy it every time. 10/10 without hesitation. Expand

The problems arise mainly with the story and its pacing. Joel's death 2 hours into the game was a big turn off and it only went down hill from there. The graphic in the game was beautiful and the gameplay feels the same as the first game which is good. I feel the tense when encountering humans or clickers. Sound design was amazing, love the atmosphere. These elements of the game, i enjoyed.

However, the big problem i had with this game is the narrative. It is force. It is disconnected. It is just a frustrating journey overall. In one of the early trailers that ND released, it made us think that Joel was going to accompany Ellie, but that was not the case in the final game. It is replaced with Jessie. That is just misleading.

I did not look at the early leaks, so I am going into this game not knowing what to expect. But, at some point before starting the game, I was preparing for the worst for what if Joel died. And that moment arrived, I did not expect it to be that early in the game. Abby killed Joel. I feel like Joel's character got dumb down, as oppose to the first game. It just doesn't make sense how him and Tommy just calmly trust Abby and her group. Sure, I get it, the whole theme of this game is hate and Joel particularly is not a good guy either. In the last of us world, there is no good people, everyone is scummy. But this is like a spit on the face and disrepectful towards the character whom you spent the most in the first game.

So, after Joel's death, you play as Ellie. You want revenge on Abby. So, you went on this journey searching for Abby and killing of her friends along the way. But you never got to meet her as Ellie. Instead, Abby's the one who came and found Ellie in the theatre and killed Jessie and Tommy was helpless and just right when the scene was about to end, the climatic moment. It cuts off.

Then, the game wants to introduce you to Abby, the girl whom you hated so much and want revenge on. The game wants you to get to know her side of the story in the last of us world. It was just frustrating playing as the character where the game makes you hate her in beginning and her story just keeps on dragging for a long and ardous experience. I got bored of it and it made me wanting to power through the game just to get to that climactic moment, which i did. After all that, I still did not care for Abby character. The two scars character, did not care at all.

The second half of the game (Abby) was just excruciating to play. It is not fun at all. I just want to finish the story so badly and it keeps on dragging. The tons and tons of flashbacks storytelling are just horrible. It ruins the flow of the story. The ending of the game, you did not get what you wanted. You were left with this empty void. Abby wins, Ellie lose everything in the end, even her two fingers. The character who you rooting for from the first game and waited for 7 years, loses everything. I guess, this part 2 is the downfall of Ellie in this story. It is paving its way for a possible part 3 where Ellie will rise again, maybe.

Overall, the tense gameplay carried the game i would say. I did not like the flow of this game. A painful and disjointed storytelling. The layers on layers of flashbacks are just fillers of time wasting. This game is a rollercoaster where the people plummets to their deaths at the end of the ride. It's not a fun game and ND achieved that.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. After debating the score for a while now I’ve come to the conclusion that this game definitely deserves a six out of 10. Overall the gameplay, graphics, the performance by the characters, and music are superb and should be applauded for years to come. Unfortunately, the main purpose and drive of the story was very poorly executed. I can see where the developers are going in terms of what they wanted out of the story, but it just was not well thought out. The pacing was terrible and honestly the entire time I was playing after a big main characters death, it was just a drag to play. I felt depressed but also at the same time bored and not intrigued by what was happening in the storyline. What kept having me come back to the game was a game play because it was so good. I understand that you lose everything after revenge, but the way the story of revenge was organized felt pushed and non-deserved. There were also many points in a story There were also many points in a story where there was just to many things the gamer had to “believe in” in order to drive the storyline forward that made me scratch my head and think, this is what a writer who probably makes over a million dollars a year decided to mark into his/her script? Well, I hope in part 3, the story can be saved in some sort of way. Until then, this sequel has left a bad taste in my mouth. However, people should still play this game for the gameplay. It will be remembered for years to come. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Last of us part II is very controversial game. On the one hand, great graphics, the best character animations I've seen and quite good (Yes, even with Joel's death) first part of the game. On the other hand, everything that happens in the second part of the game is a failure. No matter how scriptwriters try to justify Abby's actions (especially compared to Ellie's), they failed. The story of the Lev/Lily and Yara is just a sjw joke. But still, I liked the ending that everyone hates so much. Of course, scriptwriters could have been more talented in explaining that violence only leads to violence. But we have what we have.I am disappointed, the ending of first part left me with bitter-sweet feelings, second one left me with nothing, but sadness. Even with all its problems, this game doesn't deserve a score below 7. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I truly loved this game, I played the first one and I thought it was excellent, I've played the second one now and it is absolutely excellent. The storytelling and character development is insane. People are mad because [spoiler] ..... Joel dies, and that's why it's getting rated so poorly. The story between Ellie and Abby is that they are two sides of the same coin. If we played the first game as Abby's story and now in the second game Ellie came along and killed her dad, we would have had the exact same reaction. The story is visually beautiful as it is in performance and in storytelling. It is so raw and real because this is a post apocalyptic wasteland and having Joel die is a possibility that could happen in a real scenario. Having the expectation that it was still going to keep to that father daughter trope would have been tiring and childish in that Ellie was growing up and evidently distancing herself a bit from Joel. It was heartbreaking how the revenge story was played out and so raw in emotion that it shows Ellie's development as a person as she grapples with reality. Truly an excellent game. Expand

If you were looking for an improvement in gameplay from the first game prepared to be disappointed. The only new features are a clunky jump with terrible animation, a dodge which forces dodging situations with an unstoppable attack action from enemies, and squeezing between tight spaces which is okay. Naughty Dog almost got rid of environmental puzzles completely which I personally didn’t like seeing as I enjoyed them in the first game. The narrative is where this game suffers the most. It’s your stereotypical revenge plot where someone important dies and the player has to go after the killer. The only issue is you don’t ACTUALLY get revenge and waste hours of gameplay trying to achieve that goal. In addition the game forces you to play as the main antagonist for hours at a time which is extremely boring and time consuming. Unlike the first game where there were moments of darkness followed by moments of light that allowed you to laugh and fall in love with the characters The Last Of Us Part 2 is lacking in that department. The game constantly beats you down and feels as if playing it is more like a chore than something you’d do for fun. The characters leave much to be desired as they are no where near as interesting as they are in the first game and feel very underdeveloped and bland. Even Ellie. Most cutscenes just leave you with thoughts like “Oh him?” “Ugh this is so long”. Unlike the first game where I was completely sucked into the game and couldn’t stop watching I found myself getting distracted very very easily by my phone or other things. Overall, the game is NOT worth buying or playing save your money and if you’re that desperate just watch a playthrough you won’t like it either way. Expand

6 years in the making, the hype surrounding this game is an understatement. How would the developers create a game that’s supposed to be better than their beloved title before it? By taking you through a roller coaster journey of emotions, that is.

The gameplay is tight all throughout, and every encounter whether it’s against the zombie horde or the plague called humans is absolutely visceral. The tension is palpable in every way, and I think we have the advanced AI programming to thank for the realism offered by this game that only a handful of games can come close to. Each enemy didn’t have its usual programming and their movements are erratic, pushing players to create tactical mistakes and missing their shots more often than your usual third person shooters. The inclusion of dogs didn’t help either, not to mention that the enemy sightlines seem to be infinite most of the time, just like how it is in real life, getting alerted by an unknown watcher whose location you couldn’t pinpoint because listening for noise at that distance is impossible. The addition of verticality by enabling the protagonist to go prone and climb almost all obstacles gave it another level of complexity that enhances the palpability of the game’s encounters and level design.

The graphics and sound design are absolutely stunning, breathing life into every object and environment, more than any game before it in the PS4. Virtual rain that feels heavy as you stalk through the ruins of a city, the piercing shriek of a far off undead filling you with dread and anticipation, the gurgling of blood from an enemy whose throat I just slit, the small notes on every whiteboard, all the blood stains and scratches on the walls, every crack and crevice, the bantering and background chatter, the ethnic details and emotion on each and every person’s face… all of these are minute but important details that bring the player into the ruined world of the game’s protagonists that I’m more than glad to participate in. I can’t state enough how stunningly beautiful this game is in every possible way.

So given these praises, why is it being review-bombed by people in Metacritic and other critic sites?

It’s because of the story. The story is polarizing to a lot of players, and I can see why. But damn, they are missing out. Don’t ever trust these user critics’ aggregated scores. In my opinion, they are babies who continue to be anchored to their expectations based on the previous game that causes their appreciation for the narrative direction of the sequel to sink. The release of the leaks didn't help either on how the story was meant for its intended audience, since there was no context as to why or how things are. So, I'll just say it: the leaks are, unfortunately, partly true, but it isn't the whole story and the leaks are a disservice to the experience of the player. If you've read the leaks, believe me when I say, open your mind and give this a shot. It's an experience worth your time and money.

TL;DR: Play the game. The story is AMAZING. A narrative force of nature that touches on love lost, the price of vengeance, and moral worth. Absolutely amazing. Couple that with the most breathtaking visuals, heart piercing sound design, challenging and extremely tight gameplay, and you’ve got yourself an absolute masterpiece. What a way for the PS4 to go.

But the first half of the game? To be honest, I was kind of enjoying it more than the first one, and I know that's controversial to say. I don't feel like I played the same game that everyone else seems to be complaining about. It has some of the most natural LGBT representation I've seen in a video game, which is refreshing. Some people think that the theme of revenge is a little too intense, and I can understand that. It's a very emotionally draining game, and if not in the right mindset, you might not be prepared to play it and have FUN with it. But I did. The first 20-24 hours of the game were meant for me. Unlike a lot of reviews and the game creators view of Joel's final act in the first game, I never thought of it as the unmoral act (saving Ellie).
Since when its okay to kill someone to save others ?? Justifying the killing of Ellie to me is like justifying the killing innocent people to find a cure for Covid_19!! I would've done what Joel did for someone I didnt even care for, let alone a CHILD whose I love like a daughter.

The faulty demonetization of Joel's act, is what justifies the horrible ending his character received in the second game.

To me the first game story was perfect and Joel did the Moral thing. No one can take that away from me.

TLOU Part II story is a huge departure of the interesting story of the outbreak of a mutant Cordyceps fungus and the path of finding its cure to a flat unsatisfying overused cliche revenge story. It even does that in a very harsh way as if it wants to ruin the first game legacy.

I also had an issue with the forced unnatural inserting of strong women in the game as if we are living in an only women leading society. I am all for women rights and strong women representation, but too much of a good thing is actually a bad thing.

I really did not enjoy the Last of us Part II.

First of all, the people who put bad reviews are just idiots who probably like spongebob games (and yes someone who wrote a bad review gave a SPONGEBOB GAME AN 8). This game is probably the GREATEST GAME IN THE WORLD. I love how they killed Joel quickly, not because I dont like Joel but it just makes the story interesting. And another review I saw said “Before they kill Joel they need to give Abby some backstory so that we understand why” but I love how they didnt, they made it so that you hate Abby at first then realise after the flashbacks Abby has a reason to. And its cool how they killed of so many people so then you get sad a lot which makes sense why? Because its a zombie apocalypse game. I hate to break it to you but in a zombie apocalypse lots of people die. So if your angry by that then you probably like disney endings. The ending is amazing, Ellie letting Abby live, Ellie getting back to the farmhouse and soooo much more. The whole story is amazing and you always want to play more. And it makes you realise, Abby isnt evil shes nice. Sure she killed Joel in a horrible way but when you play as Abby again she says she regrets it! Another thing I love is when Abbys foot is on Tommys head it makes you wait to see what happens. And the Rat King is terrifying but cool, im so happy they added a new infected thats super scary. And shamblers are epic they arent as strong as bloaters but they’re so cool. If you dont like tlou 2 then your a weirdo who thinks everything is PC. I feel bad for Naughty Dog how they got so many bad reviews and I hope the average score goes up and i know it will.

No spoilers, I think that most of these bad reviews they give to the game are from people who have not played the full 27 hours of the game, the game as a script is perfect, because it takes you through a whole path of emotions, it wants to take you from hatred towards compassion for a character, and that is what a script looks for and it is something that is well achieved. for me thisNo spoilers, I think that most of these bad reviews they give to the game are from people who have not played the full 27 hours of the game, the game as a script is perfect, because it takes you through a whole path of emotions, it wants to take you from hatred towards compassion for a character, and that is what a script looks for and it is something that is well achieved. for me this story could not end in a better way. The Last of Us Part II is the high point of the PlayStation 4. The plot is controversial, but the game is the incredibly addictive adventure of Ellie, from which it is impossible to pull away from the opening and to the very end.

Not everyone is going to enjoy the motives of The Last of Us Part II. But if you try and manage to accept the subliminal and not so subtle messages as a fact that the world has gone awry and that people have the need to have somewhere or someone to belong to as their own way out, then... You will witness the boundaries of gaming expand. You will witness a true masterpiece.

If you loved the original for its great characters and well-paced story – stay away from this game. However, if you’re aching to sink into the depths of depression, or just want to cut some throats and burn some zombies – Part II will deliver. [Issue#247, p.72]
