Possibly the most engaging story I’ve ever seen in a video game. Improves on the original game in every single way whilst taking the narrative in a whole new direction. Certainly one of the best games of the decade, and one of my new favourites!

TLOU2 is an amazing experience, the visuals are insane, the gameplay feels good, the music is top notch, and about the most controversial part, the story, all I have to say is that you gotta play this game yourself, and playing it with hate and the tought that it has any sort of propaganda, will ruin your experience and take on the story .

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Let's begin with the good stuff:

    - INSANE graphics, even on the original PS4. Makes you wonder what kind of graphics we'll see on the PS5. Insane level of detail and absolutely LOVELY on the PS4 PRO on a 4K Television. We have to congratulate Naughty Dog for the game's optimisation and looks on a 7 year old gaming hardware.

    - Gameplay mechanics were improved and new tactical opportunities have surfaced, with hiding under cars, beds, distractions, grass. You have multiple ways of approaching the same encounter.

    - Amazing difficulty and accessibility settings. So many choices and custom difficulty settings to make the experience however you want.

    And now for the negatives:

    - No innovation on the gameplay aspect. And I don't mean the mechanics as I mentioned above. I mean the actual execution of the gameplay. You scavenge, you craft, you upgrade weapons just like you did in the first game. Nothing changed on that matter.

    - The story is ABSOLUTELY HORRENDOUS. They could have taken on so many different approaches, but the result was awful. We were forced Abby down the throat, the decisions of the characters of the first game are plain stupid, there are plot armours everywhere, the new characters are not being properly introduced fr us to care about them. In general, ND's practice was manipulative, they tried so hard to make us like Abby that it resulted to stupid decisions by everyone.

    - The ending. In the end, nothing in this game mattered. In the first game, there was the hope of the cure. It ended with us thinking of the consequences of the choices Joel made. We thought that we would be paid off in the second game. But no, it's as if the cure was forgotten. With this game's ending, what can we look forward to fot Part 3? Nothing. All the characters are broken, no revenge was exacted, no buildup for the next game EVER happened.

    - This game was advertised as Ellie's Revenge. But in the end, it was all about Abby. Naughty Dog even restricted reviewers not to talk about the second half of the game. ND even went to the length of changing character models from the game to the trailers (I am talking about the Joel-Jesse swap), leading to misleading and false advertising for the game.
    - Joel's Death: Listen. I for sure don't give this a negative for the sole fact that Joel died. It's how we get to it. Joel was a major character and NOTHING about his death are even close to Joel's character. His death was too early in the game, he could give us much more and he could died later in the game, after we have played with Ellie and him, actually living the consequences of Joel's decision to save Ellie. Then we could play as Abby, experiencing her side, with her father's loss, how she met all these people and justifying the revenge against Joel. Then, they find each other and the game ENDS with Abby killing Joel and Ellie setting for revenge, possibly setting a part 3.

In the end, save your money and buy the game solely for gameplay and graphics, but only after it is half price or something. Do not expect a big payoff or the characters you love.

Thank you Naughty Dog for making such an amazing game. I loved the first one game and this is an absolute masterpiece, one that takes patience, empathy, and grounding yourself in the world the characters are living in to full grasp the compelling story. I'm not sure how anyone could dislike this game or anyone rating this below a 5, what is your definition of 5? A blu ray disk that spins and has a loading screen? Six years of dedication went into this game and it shows around every corner and building. The emotions this game instilled in me when I was playing was like nothing I've ever experienced in a game before. This is truly a work of art, one that should be applauded for it's accomplishments. For those disliking the story, you might want to consider a lesson in History and the brutally of the real world and perhaps even the foundations of Psychology to comprehend empathy and sympathy. The games story takes some degree of intelligence to appreciate and understanding the meaning of what these fictional characters are experiencing and how the story unfolds for them. Expand

From a technical standpoint, this is one of the more ambitious games out there. From the graphics, to unprecedented rope physics, all the way to a fully functioning guitar - Naughty Dog surprises with an unbelievable level of detail, without ever sacrificing the game’s performance. The story is what you’d expect from the next title in the installment. With that, I mean that the story meets (and exceeds at times) the unreasonably high expectations anyone may have had after playing the first title. It’s original, heartfelt, and sincere. The characters are so well written that their adventure feels like your adventure, love and heartbreak, and all.

The gameplay is a perfect extrapolation of what made the first game great. From combat, to stealth passages, to small passages of open world exploration, it doesn’t do anything incredibly new, but it does everything incredibly right. Who should play this: If you’re a person with a heart, and you love heartfelt stories driven by sincerely written characters, you should definitely play this game. It does stand on its own legs, but to understand the characters’ motivations, you’ll need to have played the previous title.

Who shouldn’t play this: If you can’t stand blood and gore, and strong language, you might want to be careful. This is also not a game for children. Additionally, if you have a problem with the creative director denouncing Nazis, or there being gay characters, you shouldn’t play this game, and instead take the next rocket heading straight into the sun.

Technically perfect game, almost perfect gameplay, over the top graphics and facial expfessions. Regarding the story it’s definitely something different from the original, it may not be your cup of tea but it’s an incredibly daring gamble that in my opinion pays off almost completely. Some parts feel too dragged for story reason and the pacing in the second half it’s quite bad.

So this game is fantastic. I would recommend it to anyone who (1) loves great story telling (2) loves great graphics and (3) can deal with zombies and jump scares.

I don't recommend this game to people who feel emasculated by the fact that the main character in this story is a lesbian—it is a shame that the rage of these people has tanked the user score of this game.

to be honest the graphics and the gameplay was like the first one.. amazing but the fact that they sell me this game like if I could play with joel angry me a lot!! i'm very confused right now, is this false advertising?

how could you ruined one of the best game of the ps3 era! there's no point to kill joel so early in the game because he was the main character of the first one and the one I care about I don't give a **** about abby, second omg the finale!! is just a disappointment i can't stand this piece if **** I just wanted to kill abby that ****ing character and revenge Joel.. Guys if this game was about revenge you game fail miserably. The third thing is how stupid Joel and his Brother were in the raid incident omg in the first game joel was more careful sharing information this is so stupid! and how he died is a brutality!

Finally, 7 seven ****ing years i wait for this to come out only for get tricky and not to have the game that i thought could have, all this second part is a slap in the face for fans and a disrespect for the first one. Who thought this was a good idea in the first place omg this game is pathetic is a shallow of the first one it's a mess!

All of their games since uncharted 1 till uncharted lost legacy (includes last of us) have all had good writting and interesting narrative wich is why those were well received and is what made fall in love with Nauhty Dog games. If this game had better writting and proper execution, this game would have been better. Like I said this game has a good story which touches upon some good and complex themes, but only poorly written with less interesting narrative. I respect them for trying something completly different instead of making and following the huge of success of the first game. People are hating on this game for only a single plot element and should ACTUALLY PLAY THE GAME. Overall, this isn't near to the perfection of the first last of us, but its still a good game. I mean not everyone can give out a perfect game each time and naughty dog is no exception and there will be times where they can disapoint which is ok. I still felt slightly disappointed, since I have been hyped for this game back in psx 2016 but I'm sure they won't disapoint with their next game. My rating for last of us 2 is an 8/10. This rating mght seem good, but for me naughty dog's range is atleast a 9 to truly deliver. Moving to the technical aspects, the ghraphics are stunning and beautiful and its easily the best and realistic looking game I have ever played. The acting and facial animations are exellent and the sound designing is so realistic and great. The gameplay is far more improved in this game, there are many new mechanics that were added which adds another layer to the gameplay. I really enjoyed the gameplay, it was fluid, realistic and really fun. This time the AI is much more improved making the encounters more challenging and you have to be more stategic to approach them. There are so many small details that are just crazy to see. In brief, its a technical masterpiece and they put **** ton of effort in making this game and few reports say this game costed them at least 100 million to make. They pushed the boundaries of gaming and I can't imagine how their games will look on PS5. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. A truly MASTERPIECE. I played the original one 6 years ago which I think it was great. And this one, it is way beyond great. I understand so many people are mad about how they treated Joel however this is part of the story, I accept it and let the game finish the storytelling. I think it is unfair to judge a game just because of its opening. The best part of the story I think is Abby's story. It was so great and her relationship with Lev is so touching. It makes the game duo heroine and tells the story in a creative way: two girls, different story but related, opposite side at three same days. Many criticize that at the ending Ellie should kill Abby but in my own opinion, she should let Abby go. Everyone is their own hero in their own story. At the epilogue, when Ellie puts down the guitar, meaning she has grown up and walked out of the shadow of Joel's death. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I had my doubts about the review bombing on Metacritic well this is what I'll say after finishing this game after spending over 30 hours on it. This game had really great gameplay. But the story is incredibly pathetic and petty. I truly believe Naughty Dog wants gamers to forget about Joel in the **** manner possible. 'How come?' you ask me. Well it's Joel who taught Ellie how to play the guitar, handle a gun and self-defense. And when the game starts in Jackson Joel was murdered by Abby. Then near the end Ellie egged Abby to fight. Abby bites off Ellie's two digits so she can't play the guitar anymore in the epilogue. She even has a change of heart in finishing off Abby so lets her off the hook and denies us the satisfaction of exacting revenge. But no Ellie wasn't meant to be saved because she was supposed to be the cure for the pandemic. This is every kind of messed up possible. When she returns home to find her lover Dina long gone and can't even play her guitar properly during this depressing apocalypse, how much more depressing can this game get? Of course she leaves her guitar behind, which is symbolic of leaving Joel.

A new beginning I suppose... I definitely won't be getting TLOU3 if that ever comes out.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This is honestly the best narrative / story telling experience I've ever had in a video game, I would go as far to say any media actually.

This is the exact reason why I believe video games can be a true evolution of art. What was done here is just impossible in any other media and will certainly be talked about and praised for years and years on.

The non-binary narrative and change in perspective that forces the player to deal with the full listening of a second perspective. Imagine you being quiet and just hearing out someone speaking about something you 100% disagree for 10+ hours, do you see yourself dealing with that? Well you should, because that's how you can improve as a person.

This game is a life lesson everyone should have and a lot of people learn the exact opposite of this (specially because of the internet). People are being trained at hating each other because of the most stupid things (liking/disliking a media for example) and people don't have the mindset to stop and listen to that second opinion. You might not like it, but you must listen and give time to understand.

Real life is exactly like this, non-binary, unpredictable and full of mistakes and dumb moments (I would say that 100% of humans in the world have put themselves in a bad situation without prior realization). This game is the definition of "You're not prepared".

I know I won't change nobody's opposite opinion, and if you read up until this point, thank you and if you haven't played this game, please do, I feel this is an important tale. Be sure to play both games. If I would make one complaint about this story is that you too tied to the first one and you can only fully understand this game profound message if you played the first one.

At the end the first game was only "good" for the story but this one is so bad. Maybe it was the decision they took, i can care less about the inclusion it's just that they try to be realistic with a story so unrealistic. The main character of the last game is killed in a gruesome way, just like any other character in this freaking game, really unnecessary every character was killed even if they appeared 10 minutes ago with Abby just forgeting them 5 seconds later, except the one she was in love obviously. Then they told us that we wouldn't have to kill any animal but you are forced to kill a lot of dogs and one character just unnecessarily kill a horse in front of the player. A 5 months pregnant women just running around shouting guys, a girl lifting a really big ladder from the beginning of it, are some of many things in this game than make 0 sense. Ellie;s character lose so much in this game, specially at the end, Abby is the best one in my opinion. I never liked Joel in the first one but in this game get so much sh*t. I think people are criticizing this game for the wrong thing, this one is just trash Expand

You can tell the writing took a nose dive and the approach was definitely not what the fans wanted. So here's the deal, the graphics are amazing, 90% of the game is just cinematic. 10% game play at best. That being said the 10% game play is pretty boring and repetitive. The thing that discouraged me from playing through it a 2nd time is the story is just awful. It goes no where, you don't really care about the main characters and its just very poorly written for you to be fully engaged. I feel like its so bad that this could have been just an expansion released rather than a stand alone title. Definitely not worth 60.00. Pure disappointment. Expand

Graphics and sound:. TLOU2 has some of the best graphics and sound of any recent PS4 release. There's no denying that Naughty Dog pushed the PS4 hardware up to its limit to maximize the games visual and sensory stimulation so you see and feel engrossed in your environment.

Gameplay: The gameplay of TLOU2 is serviceable. If you marathon both titles together, one will have a feeling of familiarity when jumping from one to the next, though I would argue that, much like Konami's Metal Gear Solid series experienced, any future titles should have a revamped control scheme developed to meet the demands of growth and development.

Story: Story..... oh the story.... This will be THE most divisive story ever developed for the PS4. And players will be divided into 3 camps:

    1) You think characters are disposable for plot purposes so you've limited your attachment to limit any emotional blow when they die or get injured.

    2) You've been with the franchise since the games debut on the PS3, feel a connection with them, and will (rightly) be outraged when they meet their untimely end, get hurt, or endure bodily harm for the sake of being a plot device.

    3) Feel indifferent because it's just a game title and you have little to no emotional investment in the game's universe.

I won't go into plot spoilers themselves. Reason being there's enough ranting about that. However, I will question the motivation behind the development of this game. It's come to light that Naughty Dog intentionally substituted characters into game demos shown to the press for the expressed purpose of misleading them, so they would go back and report it, then we could switch out said characters to conceal divisive plot points. The city of Seattle was intentionally selected so they would have justification for their inclusion of LBGT+ paraphernalia (To be clear, I have NOTHING against the LBGT community. This is about intent, not inclusion or the removal of said inclusion).

Not to mention every gaming journalist that received a review code was contract bound to ONLY talk about the Ellie chapter (hint) and was ONLY allowed to use media captures from 3 (THREE) specific sections of her chapter (which was also taken as misleading).

And finally, the dark, brutal narrative that's given for the sake of plot convenience makes little sense and subjects the player to extended, almost torture pornish levels of "shock value" in a misguided effort to make you "hate" characters. I found it difficult to sympathize with most everything happening. It was like the Neil Druckmann was trying SO hard to be M. Night Shyamalan and include as many twists as he could but in the process out thought himself. And for what? Alienating 2/3 of your fanbase?

What got me the most was a troubling scene that literally so graphic, so gory, so vicious, I physically got ill. It made me want to puke. And I enjoy horror, just not graphic gore of characters I'm supposed to sympathize with.

tl;dr conclusion: We live in an age where games are streamed and playthroughs are uploaded to various sites: YouTube, Twitch, etc. If you're unsure and came here looking for something to sell you on this game, watch a playthrough. Just the first few hours. If it engages you, then you'll have your answer. If you're repulsed by what you see, there's your answer. But make this decision for yourself. There's a reason why the Critic Scores differ significantly from the user score. Hopefully this review helps you gain perspective on that.

If you kill one of the most beloved characters early in the game (Joel) and want to bring in new main playable characters like Abby, you HAVE to bring WAY more backstory in order to make the player feel with her.
    I mean she KILLED Joel!
How do you make the player like her? Bring more and more backstory before she does that. Let the players play 2-10h as Abby when she was a child or whatever. The backstory of her is basically told in 10minutes and then her dad is being killed. Thats it? And now I have to feel with her and understand why she killed Joel?
    Hell no!
That is weak story telling. Really really weak.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I'll be honest, I wasn't expecting much. Many people loved the first one, and all too often, a sequel just shows that fans and developers aren't on the same page. That's okay. The gameplay loop is great, the graphics are great and the level design is fantastic. The AI is simply good, the story is serviceable, and some of the characterizations of some of the people provide an empathetic connection.

However, this game makes me sick. The overly gratuitous sex scene is one thing that I may not have appreciated, but then, at times, relentless over the top goreplay is too much. Now that I've gone all the way through, I will simply say that this was a torture porn and gore show. The story, while not bad, does nothing to deserve the torture and outright evil things you do as Abby.

I like the first game, wouldn't call myself a fan, but it was fine enough. This game tried to play the "art" game, but it's really just a case of somebody getting off on what should be an AO rating.

This is arguably the most staggeringly deep games I've ever played. The swath of 0/10 and 1/10 scores written by boys who don't know what to do with their dEeP FeELIngS, while simultaneously accusing Naughty Dog of poor writing, is ironic and pitiable.

Facing the consequences of your actions from TLOU1 and experiencing the impact of the (at best) morally dubious actions taken by Joel bring a depth to this story that was necessary to elevate it beyond standard survival horror fare. The difficulty in letting go of a difficult past and questioning our actions are themes which the game forces you to confront. Boys who want to remain in their hugbox with daddy figure Joel will resist it and lash out, blaming perceived external flaws rather than examining themselves.

Many (likely most) of the negative reviews never played the game. The shallow complaints about the visibility of LGBT characters displays an antiquated understanding of the world. (Oh no, one minor character character who happens to be trans?? The horror.) The lack of understanding that Joel was a well-developed character, but not an unequivocally good person, is prevalent. "I like Joel, so anyone who opposes him is bad," is the gist of their argument.

Read a book, boys. Travel somewhere foreign. Get accustomed to being outside of your comfort zone and see how much you can learn about empathy before you die. If you played TLOU1 when it came out, you're an adult now. Act like one.

The Last of Us Part II is the high point of the PlayStation 4. The plot is controversial, but the game is the incredibly addictive adventure of Ellie, from which it is impossible to pull away from the opening and to the very end.

Not everyone is going to enjoy the motives of The Last of Us Part II. But if you try and manage to accept the subliminal and not so subtle messages as a fact that the world has gone awry and that people have the need to have somewhere or someone to belong to as their own way out, then... You will witness the boundaries of gaming expand. You will witness a true masterpiece.

If you loved the original for its great characters and well-paced story – stay away from this game. However, if you’re aching to sink into the depths of depression, or just want to cut some throats and burn some zombies – Part II will deliver. [Issue#247, p.72]
