Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Expand

The Last of Us Part II meets or exceeds all the expectations set forth by the original title. The story line may not be 100% as tight or succinct as the original, but that's because it's far more complex in its narrative structure.

The story in general terms is about the self-destructive nature of revenge, and an exploration of how (and if) cycles of violence and misunderstanding between different people can be broken.

You initially follow Ellie as she follows Tommy on a likely-suicidal mission to avenge Joel's death at the hands of a surviving contingent of Fireflies. One by one she murders them, but each time she does she comes back changed. This slowly begins to poison her relationships with her remaining friends.

Halfway through the game the POV changes. You are now one of the Fireflies. At first you reject this shift in perspective, having already decided that these people were scum and worthy of death. However, slowly but surely you are forced to recognize their humanity. And those actions that you previously took as Ellie start to look less and less badass and heroic. Instead, they start to look monstrous.

In the ending scene, Ellie has lost several of her fingers and finds that she is no longer able to play the guitar song that Joel wrote for her.

In her quest for revenge, she had killed the one part of Joel that had truly lived on through her -- his music.

You realize that there was no real villain. Nobody was the hero. Everyone was the villain. Everyone was simply human, and flawed, and was wounded by violence, revenge and madness.

If that's not an appropriate theme for 2020, I don't know what is.

The people who are complaining "I didn't get to kill Abby. WTF???" let me say this unambiguously -- you completely missed the point of the story.

The majority of negative user reviews here complaining about the story were written within hours of the titles release before anyone could have possibly finished it.

So, who is review-bombing this game without playing it? They generally fall into three groups:

    1. People butt-hurt over the decision to kill off the previous main character, Joel. This was an excellent decision made by the writers. Why? Joel's character arc was finished. That's why. It was thoroughly explored in the first game. Furthermore, his death is the catalyst that spurs literally all of the events of the second game into motion. Though he is dead for most of the second game, he is still a main character in it. His presence, and absence, are keenly felt throughout the entire story. All I can say to these people is I'm glad they do not have control over the game's narrative, since it would have been all the worse for it.

    2. Douchebag culture warriors upset over the presence of homosexual characters. Perhaps they forget that there were heroic homosexual characters in the first game? Who cares, really, what these people think -- these are garbage people.

    3. People who don't understand good storytelling or can't deal with moral complexity. Sorry to say this, but the issue here is that you people are stupid. If you want unambiguous morality, post-apocalyptic fiction is not for you. Maybe try a JRPG or something where the bad guy is the main character's evil twin brother who wears a red eye patch. Let me also say unambiguously -- your opinion is trash. Thank god smarter people wrote this game.

Other than that, graphics are excellent. Story is cohesive and interesting. The characters are some of the best I've seen in a video game. Gameplay is mostly excellent. Shootouts are visceral and terrifying. Violence is gratuitous. It's as close to perfect as I've seen a game come.

I literally sat through like an hour of credits just to make sure there wasn't more to see.

Ignore the conservative trolls. Ignore the people who ran out to talk **** about the game as soon as Joel's death was spoiled for them without playing it.

For God's sake, play this game.

Given that it's breaking records for daily users right now, I'm fairly certain that the negative reviews here are from a fringe minority.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Honestly i got into the game thinking it's complete garbage and what i saw was astounding. I was actually amazed by the detail of the game. When i actually went deeper to see why the game is hated, like 50% of them are because Eliie is gay? Seriously? Like are humans that abysmally pathetic now? Our race is homophobic against a video game character? 2nd thing was false marketing, which i have to agree on, was pretty bad on their part. But false marketing doesn't make the game bad, it makes the developers bad. I noticed that half the people didn't even play the game, like literally, some comments were "the controls are hard", "the story is monotone", "the characters are dumb" and then the same people go on saying how Doom Eternal was the most original game ever (no offense, like the game, but that's just false). All and all Joel's death was explained and it has a legitimate reason, he isn't killed just because. The story is nowhere near bad written imo. The characters are pretty iconic and i definitely don't mind Ellie being gay, i actually understand it in an apocalyptic world. You really can't pick whatever you want, so you are more welcome to experiencing new stuff. right? Expand

I just finished the game and I am both and I am left changed. The story tackles delicate themes like revenge, grief, and violence on the side of Ellie's of view, while at the same giving us the protector feeling that we fell in love in the first game through the relationship between Lev and Abby, regardless of what anyone could say, last of us is the most gorgeous looking game the video game industry produced up to now, and everything frombthe sound designe to the mocap, all the way to th the AI, be it ally or foe, is flawless. The game is everything you could ask for, and both fight between Ellie and Abby ar made me want to tear up, because I didn't want either of them to die...
The game is a masterpiece worthy of its predecessor, and shall be rembered for a long time as a sequel done right

The Last of Us Part II is anything but simple. At first glance you’d argue that it is. It’s about a set of characters in a post-apocalyptic world. All of this because of an outbreak that spreadThe Last of Us Part II is anything but simple. At first glance you’d argue that it is. It’s about a set of characters in a post-apocalyptic world. Food, medical supplies and other basic necessities are in shortage. The government has crumbled and in it’s place factions have risen to either gain control or give hope to the people around them. All of this because of an outbreak that spread to quickly to even give people a chance to find a cure or an appropriate way to contain the infection. Days Gone, Dying Light, The Walking Dead, DayZ, and many other games have touched upon this concept of an infected-filled world. It’s hard to talk about this game without revisiting the first one because Part II does start with the end of Part 1. So you got Ellie - your escorts mission throughout all of Part I - and she is immune to the fungi that creates these zombie-like creatures in this game. in fact, she is probably the only one that is immune. Then you got Joel, who is your main protagonist in the first game and the one that has to take Ellie to one of the factions called the Fireflies in hopes that they can study Ellie and find a cure. You get to see Joel lose her actual daughter early on in Part I and thusly see him hesitate in taking on the task of escorting a 14-year old girl in Ellie across America to the hospital that will find a cure for humanity. He takes the job anyways and in his journey with this girl begins to empathize with her and allows himself to bond with her as though she was his daughter. Given that he is all sorts of gray, he ends up taking a decision that impacts the future of humanity in saving Ellie and you have the premise of Part II.

Joel kills the only known neurosurgical expert that can perform the necessary procedure to study Ellies brain. The reason, he couldn’t bare losing his newly adopted daughter as the surgery would have killed her. Without hesitation, Joel rushes into the operating room, takes out the doctor, takes out anyone and everyone in his way and saves Ellie, while at the same time dooming humanity. You see this morally gray guy take a definitive action, a selfish one at best and you have to deal with it while also questioning what would you have done if you were in his exact same shoes. If you experienced the TLOU Part I and allowed yourself to be in Joel and Ellie’s shoes, you were probably engrossed in the story about them two as a father and daughter, and the infected world became secondary to their story. Still important but not the real focus of the story. Part II does the same thing. It starts off revisiting that hospital scene and giving you Joels rationale. Then, you play as Ellie for most of the game and then Abby for another good portion of the game. You get to see what happens because of Joel’s action through both of these characters. How they internalize it, how they express their feelings outward and how they inevitably impact the immediate world around them. This is still an infected world with more chaos than the first one, as no cure is found after things fell apart thanks to Joels action four years prior. Though you live in this world and interact with the present factions and learn about factions of the past, the game informs you that it is not about the world and instead it is about the characters you interact with in the world. Ellie is not hunted for the cure because she was not necessarily identifiable. Joel was because he was. So instead of this game being about hunting Ellie and her escaping it, it is about Ellie dealing with Joel’s actions and her own actions. It is also about Abby and her actions, as how it relates to Joel. The world that’s here is to inform you about the characters’ mind set and how it can push them forward to take certain actions or help them hold back. This game is not one note, contrived or preachy. At least I didn’t think it to be. It can be cut and dry at points and shocking at others but there’s deeper meaning to everything that happens and it happens organically. What I like most about this game, that may not be new, is that it goes off the path to give you uncomfortable moments that make you think about the society we live in and the society in this world. It makes you think about your own values and moral codes in comparison to the characters you play as. Of course, that is if you let it happen. At the end you go along on a tough ride in which you as a player clash with your characters actions in pivotal moments. This game is a buy, just like the first one was. It is well told and well crafted, and deserves your attention. It has great combat mechanics, visceral action, a unique cast of characters that are well enough fleshed out for you to care for them (pay attention to flashback as and notes) and will leave you thinking the game through days after you finish it.

I've played a lot of great games, but this one is different. Naughty Dog created an excellent game, but more importantly they clearly worked hard to make it into a really engaging and challenging experience for the player.

The risk of killing Joel off was a risk but it needed to happen, we are meant to hate (core theme of the game) Abby and see her actions justified. The game does not deserve the hate, it is a great game with strong gameplay and a powerful story, that really makes you question is revenge necessary or does revenge only lead to more revenge (a circle). The game alos encompasses strong symbolism at the end where Ellie loses her ability to play the guitar her last connection to Joel. But as a work of art it is a triumph, both in terms of its development from a simple snow western into a doubled edged revenge plot and involving characters with backgrounds different from your typical straight white male protag. It's a significant achievement, and I would never in a million years have expected a narrative to involve more marginalized people in such a normalized way. It's refreshing, as it is cruel and visceral.

Game play wise it remained as tight if not tighter than the first, though with its length, it did begin to test my patience. But with it all most likely being the end of this IP, I really don't mind being in the world for as long as possible. Also it made me cry twice.

The game is solid. The gameplay is ultra smooth and fun, and the addition of prone stealth and proximity mines was very welcome. Not going to lie, the jarring experience of switching to Abby bugged me (both bc she’s been the antagonist for 14 hours-ish and bc her character progression starts completely over in terms of ability unlocks). To say that was a emotional ride would be an understatement.

The payoff for playing as Abby came in the parallels between her and Joel, from craftable shivs required for stealth kills to the act of turning on her allies to save a child. I felt like she learned something about how her actions affected others.

The ending was tragic. No other words really. But overall, the game was a very enjoyable experience and well-made.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Not the game the fans wanted at all. Naughty Dog took a huge risk with the story. First off, amazing graphics and gameplay. We had to watch our favorite characters be destroyed and taken to their lowest points. We had to attempt to empathize with the “villain” of the game. No one liked playing as Abby at first, but she is actually pretty like able by the end. The way the game shows the affects of actions and comes together full circle is amazing. Ellie not killing abby shows that she has a tiny bit of human left in her. It is heartbreaking but amazing at the same time. It’s not meant to be a happy ever after story or something that takes the easy route. We get a better view of the world and the harsh way that actions affect everyone. Naughty dog said that you have to go in with an open mind and that not everyone would like the game. At first I hated playing as Abby and hated the way the game was going but it changed my mind and questioned my morals. Expand

It's a perfect second part to an already amazing story. Instead of giving us a fan service sequel, Naughty Dog has done something truly magical by willingly taking huge risks to tell a beautiful and painfully tragic tale. The people who have flocked here in anger either haven't played it or made up their minds about how they felt about the game before playing it.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I’ll start off with I have completed The Last of Us part 2 in its entirety. I have also played the first game multiple times and am a fan of the series like many others. Many people have expressed their anger, resentment, and disappointment with this game on the internet over the last couple of weeks to days. I feel this frustration comes from the game having had major spoilers Leak weeks prior to launch. Many people got key points of what happens given to them without playing the game. I will admit I was upset when I read some of the leaks, (you almost couldn’t be on the internet if you didn’t want to be spoiled). I tried as hard as I could to not spoil too much and let my experience the first time truly be my own. I think the game truly has to be played in its entirety before you can understand what they were trying to do with the story. If you are halfway through playing and write a review you won’t be near where you would feel by the end. The jumps on time and cinematic flashbacks are key to feeling the way you should and cast light to why characters act the way they do. This story is beautiful, dark, gritty, passionate, expansive, and many other words of emotion all jammed into one. MY BIGGEST TAKE AWAY IS YOU CANNOT JUDGE THIS BOOK BY ITS COVER OR MID PAGES, YOU HAVE TO READ IT IN ITS ENTIRETY! I so far have disagreed with many of the reviews I’ve heard since the release of the game and I stand by my rating of the game. It truly is a masterpiece but one that you won’t immediately see until completion. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I truly loved this game, even though it left me feeling emotionally exhausted. I'll definitely be playing it again, just probably not for a few months. The story was superb, the only thing is that I would argue that it could use some re-structuring to avoid some emotional whiplash.

My biggest complaint is that we weren't made to care about Abby before she killed Joel. We should have cared about all of her friends before Ellie killed them too. To me, that would have made playing as Abby more enjoyable (I didn't really come around to her until Yara and Nev were introduced) and it would have made it more devastating to see Ellie kill the rest, particularly Owen and Mel. When I first started playing as Abby, I legitimately went out of my way to get her killed because I just despised her. Even though I knew she was a good character with relatable motivations, I couldn't get over her killing Joel and then Jesse, who I really did like as a side character even though he was only around for maybe 20 minutes total.

The gameplay was just a better version of the first game with more fluid movement (still not perfect, but better) and a few more mechanics/enemies. The graphics were gorgeous. The dialogue was great. Even if the story was out of order, I loved the characters and they were very real. Even though I wanted to rip my hair out a couple of times, it made sense to me that neither women were willing to lay aside their revenge. And by the end, Ellie's actually become more of a villain, which was a reflection of how Joel lost his way and went to **** after Sarah/before Ellie.

Even though it hurt and it was difficult, Joel's death made sense for the story. In a lot of ways, it was a bit of karmic retribution for all the bad he'd done. Most of which we as the audience don't know about because it wasn't the focus of the first game. If we'd followed Abby's story from the beginning and not known the man she was hunting was Joel, she would have been a sympathetic hero from the start. By the end, I loved her almost as much as Ellie, which I think was impressive considering how much I disliked her at first.

I would actually say this game is between a 9-10 with its weaknesses, but it's closer to a 10 than a 9.

Então o meu veredito final é : O jogo é magnífico , the last of us Part 2 não é jogo de Ellie,Joel , é um jogo sobre pessoas. Expand

The backlash to this game has been deflating, to say the least. Having finished it recently, I've spent almost every moment since thinking about its story. Judging by the metacritic score, even the people who hate this game clearly care enough to review-bomb it with this kind of passion. If nothing else, this stands as a testament to the lasting influence of the first game.

While I disagree with most of the complaints I've read about this game's story, I certainly have a few gripes with the gameplay:

The combat is thrilling, an asymetric game of cat and mouse that leaves me feeling both vulnerable and unstoppable. Every weapon feels devastating. Scrambling around each battleground diving for cover and flanking enemies never gets old. If the rumors of this game getting post-launch multiplayer end up being true, I'd be ecstatic.

Gathering supplies, on the other hand, always feels like a chore instead of the treasure hunt I wish it was. It's something I'd like to skip, but the scarcity of crafting materials means you're always short on something essential.

That said, exploration itself is engaging thanks to the environmental storytelling. There are so many details tucked away that flesh out the game's world. I recall one bulletin board post in Jackson City asking if anyone had a child's coat to spare, implying someone's child has lost theirs. Below that posting, on a yellow sticky note, is a message from Dina demanding that whoever stole this kid's coat better give it back or else. It's a great expression of her character that's easily missed, but if you pay attention, there are dozens of details just like it scattered around the world.

Which is why it's really annoying when you try opening a door or squeezing through a passageway hoping to explore a side room, only to get railroaded into a cutscene that locks you out of the previous area. Everything in the game looks natural, which is great, but it means going down "the story path" is often an accident instead of a choice. The autosave feature activates frequently, meaning you have a chance of missing valuable supplies and collectibles through no fault of your own.

Graphically, the game is gorgeous, which I don't think anyone really disagrees with. The animations, however, do so much work in fleshing out each character that I cannot understand those who argue that they're underdeveloped. The quality of the motion capture technology means every nuance in each actor's performance is portrayed beautifully in the game. Every facial tic, every sidelong glance, it all expresses a wealth of inner dialogue that simply wouldn't be possible otherwise.

And that's about as far as I can go without talking about the story. The Last of Us Part 2 is, on the surface, a story about revenge. Every major action in the game is a reaction to some sin that came before it, stemming from arguably the greatest sin in this game's universe: Joel's choice to save Ellie and doom the rest of mankind. Those who played the first game know that, while they may not agree with Joel's decision, they know him enough to understand why he had to make it.

In saving Ellie, Joel saves himself from losing his humanity. He also, however, robs Ellie of the meaning she desperately needed her life to have. Joel's lie to her, that her immunity meant nothing, was the key choice that made the ending so memorable. We know Joel has done something unforgivable. We know that the consequences for his decision will likely be devastating. And for seven years, we've had to live with the question of what those consequences would turn out to be.

As of this writing, 47,676 metacritic users are upset enough about how those consequences played out that they're comparing The Last of Us Part 2 to season 8 of Game of Thrones: A conclusion so poorly executed that it retroactively ruins all that came before.

And the thing is, it's hard to argue with that. My experience with this game left me depressed, exhausted, and haunted. The consequences of Joel's decision are as brutal as they are inevitable, and The Last of Us Part 2 asks us to play, often unwillingly, as characters who are unable to avoid ruining their lives and the lives of those they care about. Every sacrifice and victory from the first game is paid back in the second with tragedy and heartbreak. Even this game's few moments of brightness are overshadowed by the coming storm.

    And yet.

I believe that everything that happens in this game could not have happened any other way. That The Last of Us Part 2 refuses to pretend that Joel's trauma would not somehow infect Ellie and everyone else around him is a massive credit in its favor. The story's job isn't to give Joel and his loved ones a happy ending. The story's job is to explore how that trauma is passed down through each character and whether or not they can escape it before it destroys them completely.

I believe it succeeds in that goal. I give this game a 10 out of 10.

I actually played the game. It’s one of the best stories since the first game. Can’t wait for TLOU3, I hope Abby gets more muscular and Ellie is even gayer just to piss the haters off. But seriously great game, powerful story and Neil I expect my check in the mail.

This game is truly a masterpiece. Seeing all the diversity in this game was very nice. The story is fantastic, the graphics are stunning, and the acting is incredible. There isn't a single part of the game that I don't want to replay.

Incredible game. Just finished it and I'm still in awe. Although I initially didn't care much for the franchise to even have a sequel (and didn't plan on playing the game), I still did and don't regret it. I loved the first game and this one definitely gave me closure. Even though the ending was not satisfactory, it was realistic.

I made an account just to give this a review. Having literally just finished the game after playing every day for hours since release last Friday it’s very clear many of these reviews don’t come from people who actually played or finished the game. If you’re on the fence about buying this just do yourself a favour and bite the bullet. This is one of the most enjoyable, addicting gamingI made an account just to give this a review. If you’re on the fence about buying this just do yourself a favour and bite the bullet. This is one of the most enjoyable, addicting gaming experiences I’ve had in years. When I had to put it down for breaks I was thinking about it in my free time. I’m 30 this year and find it hard to stick out games and finish them completely but this masterpiece plays out like a 30+ hour **** movie. It’s tense, emotional, and just **** fun. I almost cried twice during it. I spent so much time just walking around slowly enjoying the games beautiful environments. If you own a playstation you owe it to yourself to see the limits of what this generation is capable of.

My only recommendation is play on one of the last two difficulty settings to get the true experience of how intense and desperate these characters stories are. Easily one of my favourite games this gen.

The Last of Us Part II is the high point of the PlayStation 4. The plot is controversial, but the game is the incredibly addictive adventure of Ellie, from which it is impossible to pull away from the opening and to the very end.

Not everyone is going to enjoy the motives of The Last of Us Part II. But if you try and manage to accept the subliminal and not so subtle messages as a fact that the world has gone awry and that people have the need to have somewhere or someone to belong to as their own way out, then... You will witness the boundaries of gaming expand. You will witness a true masterpiece.

If you loved the original for its great characters and well-paced story – stay away from this game. However, if you’re aching to sink into the depths of depression, or just want to cut some throats and burn some zombies – Part II will deliver. [Issue#247, p.72]
