This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Ooohhh boy... I'll start with the positives by saying that the game is visually stunning, sounds great, is rock solid mechanically, and has a bevy of difficulty & quality of life options that make the game easily accessible to practically everyone. However... the story is an absolute **** I can forgive killing Joel, I don't like it obviously, but it gives the game a strong (if somewhat overused & predictable) narrative drive. But the constant jumping back and forth between the present & the events that happened after the end of the first game kill any semblance of a consistent pace. Putting you in the shoes of Joel's killer was an interesting move, but hurt the drive to play the game (especially since they did it at roughly the halfway point of the game, when you knew who & what she was - starting the game with her, culminating in Joel's death, would've been a better move, imo [and, yes, I know - that would've necessitated a flashback at the end of Abby's portion of the game]). The biggest offense however, is the fact that this is ultimately a story of revenge... that doesn't end with either party dying. Instead we get Ellie sacrificing EVERYTHING for revenge, but when the critical moment comes - she doesn't take it. Nor does Abby kill her. Making the game's narrative not just poorly executed, but hollow as well. Sadly the game is a grievous disappointment, not in spite of its mechanical & visual glory, but because of it. It's such a glaring difference in quality between the technological aspects of the game & the narrative, that the narrative's shortcomings become impossible to ignore. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Open your heart and mind. This game is not bad. It's not about character growth but digression in Ellies case. Its about her losing Joel thus losing herself (just like the song Future days). And if your review bombing it well I got no words for you. This game is about forgiveness, Ellie forgiving Joel for what he did and the player forgiving Abby for what she did, that my interpretation anyways. If you cant forgive you wont like this game, doesn't mean it deserves review bombing... Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I think there are four main problems most review bombers have: 1. You‘re playing a gay character and her sexuality is displayed in the game. „Politics are being shoved down their throats“. Gay people exist... and they make out. Get over it.

    2. They can‘t handle Joels death. The game makes you feel uncormfortable at times. 3. You have to play as Abby, who is not „hot“ and more tanked than 80% of the male players... aaaand killed Joel.

    4. Lev is a trans person, although i don‘t think a lot of the 0 score reviewers have played long enough to get to know Lev.

I had a blast. I had to think of it for days after I finished it and now I‘m starting New Game +. I didn‘t feel comfortable or happy about some plot points as well, but that’s the point. TLOU2 makes you question your characters choices and turns a simple revenge plot into a complex and dark character study. What I also read a lot: It has good graphics, but...

It doesn‘t have just „good graphics“... The world they have built is absolutely incredible. So much detail and scope. Amazing physics and stellar acting that transfers to the virtual characters so vividly. These are people, not videogame characters. I don‘t know what ND does different about their characters compared to other games, but they just pop. Each and every side character has imperfections and personality, it‘s just amazing.

The only downside to me is the gameplay. Don‘t get me wrong, it all works fine and it’s fun to play, but I don‘t like the clear pacing of setpieces. You are always „told“ what situation you are running into. I don‘t want to know if I‘m safe when exploring or if clickers are in the area. It‘s an unpredictable and brutal world, so please don‘t take the tension out of it by letting me know what type of enemy will be next.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. this game isn’t perfect by any means, but i have come to enjoy it a lot. Joel’s death in the first 2 HOURS of gameplay was a ridiculously poor choice on naughty dogs end but I think it ultimately strengthens Ellie’s character much more ( btw she is a great character on her own ). Actual gameplay and visuals were absolutely phenomenal as well as the scenery, the only downside for me is the characters/character development. I think the whole switching to abby half way through the game is a very clever idea and it would help us sympathize with her more if her and her friends were interesting. I don’t get how we’re supposed to agree with a girl who just killed one of the most beloved characters in history whom which we’ve played an entire game with, all because we played 10 minutes with her and her dad. Maybe naughty dog didn’t want us to sympathize with abby but just understand where she’s coming from in which I do but her and her dads story do not hold a candle to Ellie and Joel’s. Also this is undoubtedly a trilogy, the ending sets us perfectly up for a 3rd game so let’s hope naughty dog gets their **** together. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. the only reason this game sold well is because of the last game, and the only reason this game is hated by fans is because they trashed all the characters. the argument of a group seeking out joel to kill him is possible in this world and joel not be suspicious of a group? then ellie breaks her character through out the whole game?! a revenge story when she wasn't every condition for that life. none of them choices make sense. i get you want to top your last game, but world building would have been a better choice to do that then trying to be a game of thrones wanna be. at the end of the day the story doesn't say anything, the characters don't grow, the world is nonexistent, all we know is bad **** happens and there are more people out there. what about the world?! we see a football stadium and tall buildings, what about the people? they die right away and then cuts to them, they're dead, it doesn't matter anymore. a story can make or break media and this story broke this game, just trash way to write it and is how to destroy a potential franchise. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. (Barely a review, it's more like a review of some negative reviews i've read)
This game is a masterpiece in storytelling. A winning achievement for gaming, this is a story that couldn't be told as effectively any other medium. When i say masterpiece i don't imply that this isn't a game without faults, but in my experience, i'm yet to find a game that i can't find faults in. Even in games others consider masterpieces. Unfortunately, the controversy surrounding the game clouded an experience that had to be played without any sort of bias. The hate for the game dates back before any of the leaks had occurred. My theory regarding the reason for this i prefer not to discuss. The bottom line is that people were making dumb arguments before the game had come out, and soon the consensus became "bad game". It certainly didn't help that some people misremember/misinterpret the ending of the first one. They think that Joel is a good person that deserved nothing but the best, when the game makes it clear that Joel was a broken selfish man that admitted to murdering innocents for personal gain in the past. They try to justify his actions at the end, when Ellie herself condemns him for disrespecting her only dream in life. In short, it was never about Ellie, it was that he wasn't strong enough to make the right choice. People mistake the fact that he is an amazingly written likable character with him being a good person. This is all to say that, to me, and i think to any who understood the first game, his death was a logical event, justified by the story itself. If Ellie gets on the path of vengeance over the death of her parental figure, isn't it logical that there would be people wanting to kill Joel when he killed countless fathers? And not all of them were bad people. The main argument people will make is that his death was badly written or humiliating (well yes, sorry, this is a realistic setting, his death had meaning to his character and that's all that matters). This is incorrect, by any standard. But you've have probably heard it a million times, or experienced it yourself. Well this is the effect that bias has on people. I have written more than 6000 characters explaining why nothing about his death was badly written, or explaining any supposed "plot hole". I am yet to come across someone who can prove any plot hole. There's a 5000 character max for this review, so i can't post it. But just by watching the scene again i'm sure you can come to that same conclusion. "Joel gave his name like an idiot, he would never have done that" Wrong. Abby already knew his name. Tommy told her. Why? Well excuse Tommy for not thinking of a false name when being on the verge of being eaten by a horde with slim chances of survival. He just didn't imagine that he's talking to the daughter of a Firefly Joel murdered 4 years ago, and that she somehow knows where he lives, his name, but *not how he looks*. Other people will say that Joel wouldn't have trusted Abby. And i agree, until you watch the scene and realize there was literally no other choice. It was trusting her or dying. Literally. That was their best and only chance. That's what they say. Moving along, people say that it's stupid that Ellie doesn't kill Abby at the end. The context needed to explain this requires 25 hours of story that lead up to that moment. The reason is simple. Abby doesn't deserve to die because she has learned from her actions, feels guilt, and has paid a tremendous price (people often forget Ellie kills ALL of her friends and "boyfriend"). And then, she spared Ellie. For the second time. She proved merciful by not killing her at the start (because for her it was about justice, Joel deserved death, but let Ellie live, because she had nothing to do with it). And then she proved merciful once again, because she knows she doesn't win anything by killing her, it will just make things worse, even if Ellie killed everyone she cared about. And then you have Ellie's side, where she gradually realizes that she has become a monster, a torturer, no better than Abby herself, someone who would hurt her loved ones if it meant getting revenge. She says so herself, at some point, it stopped being about Joel. She knows she can't justify what she's doing, and so she spares Abby, because she knows it won't bring Joel back. If anything, it will kill whatever trace of humanity Joel left in her.
And still, there's so much to say, so much to explain, justify, because people just can't get enough of hating the game. Some hate the game for external reasons, some hate it because they heard it's bad, some hate it because they played it but didn't give it a fair chance, some hate it because they didn't understand the first one, and some hate it because of justifiable reasons. I could make an equally long review all of the virtues of the game, and some criticisms that i have, but hey, who will even read it. I just wished they had given the game a fair chance. Have a nice day.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I honestly don’t get the negativity behind this game, I’ve just finished playing and honestly, I cried many manly tears. When Joel died the way he did I was angry, sad and just confused, I didn’t know how to react and seeing Ellie just as this broken girl trying to grieve the passing of the only father figure she had in her life was truly heartbreaking to watch and play through.

The character development in this game is amazing because I went from hating Abby and the rest of the members of the knockoff Fireflies to actually liking them and hating the fact that they died, it’s safe to say playing this game is probably what it feels to have Bipolar, one minute I’m sad, one minute I’m happy and the next I’m pissed off by something that’s happened.

I almost lobbed my controller when Abby shot Tommy, I honestly thought she killed him, and I wasn’t ready for that to happen, not quite yet anyways.

I want to talk about the ending as that’s where people seem to be annoyed about the most which honestly I can kind of understand but the way I look at it is this, Ellie has lost everything, she has lost friends, she has lost her family, she has lost everything and now she is alone, I feel like she realised that she related to Abby at that moment when she was drowning her at sea and it was at that point Ellie simply, gave up. She saw that she would be no better than Abby in that situation, and I honestly love that ending, I would love to be able to play as Abby again if there is a third game which I honestly hope that’s there is. They left the game on a (somewhat) cliffhanger, Ellie arrives back home to find out that Dina has up and left with little baby JJ. I want to know what happens next and I hope I don’t have to wait 7 years to find out!

Why people didn't like it and my refute:

-"Ellie changed too much". Who has the same personality when they were 14 as they did when they were 19, not accounting for trauma and PTSD and what that does to a person (and puberty).
-"The Death of _____ was done in a poor/un-heroic manner". The truth hurts and so does reality. This game was meant to be a Grimm parallel to if this was reality. Nobody is immune to death and that's what makes it great. The early death in this game prepares you and gives you that underlying feeling that anyone could die at any moment. There are no beloved protagonists in reality and nobody is immune to dying in the most stupid ways possible. If I was in the apocalypse I would probably make it to day 50 before ripping off a hangnail and dying of blood-loss or something ridiculously stupid like that (I know it's not really possible, it's an analogy), and that's reality.
    - The Story sucks. This is the most widespread criticism and one that I can't refute nor confirm. After playing through the game twice, I honestly loved the story. There are flaws as with any game but liking or hating the story is a matter of opinion. I, like most, hated Abby with every fiber of my being- even after playing her for a few hours! It wasn't until the end of Abby's playthrough that I realized I actually started to empathize with her which brings and inner-conflict to the player that I can appreciate.
    - "SJWs agenda/Ellie is gay so the game is bad". Get over yourselves.

I don’t know what possessed Druckman to turn a highly anticipated sequel into the video game version of game of thrones season 8, but him being made into an out of place NPC that’s only there to spit and curse in Spanish in the game speaks volumes. This game isn’t about the cycle of revenge and anger, this is about some moron with an agenda trying to and pitifully failing at sUbVeRtInG eXpEcTaTiOnS. Also, a sex scene? Yeah, that’s exactly the kind of content I look for in post-apocalypse horror video games. Congratulations on dropping the ball all the way to the center of the earth. Expand

But man, the story is so dark for the sake of being dark, and the returning characters acts so differently from the previous game, i am so sure it's happens in a parallel but different dimension. Also with no satisfy ending, is like a movie that has beautiful cinematic but crappy plot. prefect for people who just want to play a beautifully crafted game and does not care about the story what so ever, otherwise is not worth the time or the money. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Although the gameplay and visual aspects were improved from the previous game, the story did not surpass the first game. The way that Abby was introduced into the game was obviously meant to establish her as an antagonist since she killed off Joel so early on before we begin to become attached to her as a character. However, that is not the intended case as we play almost half of the game as Abby. This pivotal decision only served to divide the community as most players reached Abby's portion of the game with a unsavory sensation causing most players to not want to play as Abby.

When I played as Abby, I felt a sense of emptiness as I wondered, "Why am I being forced to play as a character that I already have a negative feeling towards?" Her personal story with Lev and Yara also felt out-of-place since it was never properly explained to the audience and the other characters of why Abby is so willing to help them. The only explanation we receive is either a short "guilt" or "I don't know" to Yara or Lev. It just doesn't make enough sense to go through all that trouble just because of "guilt". Furthermore, the sex scene with Owen was just extremely unnecessary and should have been cut shorter as it just made viewers extremely uncomfortable and does not help advance the plot.

Ellie felt incredibly driven for revenge solely Joel and no one else. When she hunted down Abby in Santa Barbara, it didn't feel like it was for crippling Tommy or killing Jessie, but was just for Joel. As a result, all it took was a flashback related to Joel to cause her to give up on killing Abby. This by itself also doesn't feel very authentic or realistic as it would probably take a mutual understanding between Ellie and Abby of why they killed who they killed.

If a story-based game had only mediocre graphics with decent gameplay, it would score higher than a story-based game with perfect gameplay and amazing visuals but only somewhat average story. This game is not meant to be a stand alone game, it was meant to be a direct sequel to the previous game. This means the story has to relate and be created dependent on the player attachment to those characters in the previous game. Had this game released as a completely stand alone game without any knowledge of who Joel, Ellie, and Tommy are, then the game's story would 100% be much better. The purpose of a sequel is to top the previous work, otherwise there is no point in the sequel.

I’ve play for about 6-7 hours and I have a few complaints 1. Listen mode, it sucks it’s not as easy to see people as it was in The Last of Us part 1 but it’s useful, 2. When you arrive in Seattle you use a map which at first is a little annoying but you’ll get used to it (you only use for about an hour or so), 3. The clickers, the can somehow spot you even if you’re not moving and that can be annoying at times. Let’s talk about the things I like, 1. The story, it’s starts off kinda boring but once a major event happens it starts to pick up, 2. The crafting system, while it’s not what I’m used too it still does it’s job, 3. The enemies, instead of your normal clickers, runners, and bloaters there’s also shambles and stalkers the two new zombie types are really fun and it adds a bit more of a challenge. In the game you’re introduced to two new factions the WLF (Washington Liberation Front) and the scars, the WLF is like the military and can be very challenging at times and the scars they’re not bad I just came across them not too long ago but they were easy to kill. If you’re cautious about buying this game I highly recommend it I've played a lot of games with good stories and this one is the second best. It’s a great game and I think you’ll enjoy spending time with the character (Ellie) that you grew to love in The Last of Us part 1. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This game is very controversial some people hate it and some people love it. I am at a 7 because I find it to have very fun gameplay it improved its game play from the first game in almost every way. When I was playing the game I was wondering how any one could hate this game? But that’s when I got to the part when Joel dies from Abby which made me angry because why would they do that but I got over it and got back into the game and I was in joying myself for about 12 hours when we were at the part I thought was the climax with Abby pointing a gun at Ellie I was very invested when we cut back to Abby as a kid when I was like what the hell. But I kept playing just waiting for the game to take us back to Ellie but it was taking a very long time so I googled how long is the Abby sections to find out it’s about the same length of time as the Ellie portion. That made me want to just stop playing since I did not like the Abby character. Naughty dog wanted you to feel for her.. but I just didn’t. Eventually we get back to the part where Abby is pointing a gun at Ellie when I’m like yes now I get to kill Abby but no we are still playing as Abby trying to kill Ellie. When you leave Ellie coughing up blood on the floor. Now it’s been a bit and you play as ellie again and you have a farm house with there baby living a good life when for some reason ellie feels like she needs to go kill abby so she leaves Dina which at this point in the game you don’t care any more you just want the game to be done but whatever you go to this place where Abby is to kill her but Abby has been put in prison and is very weak so when ellie finds her she lets her down then wants to have a fight when Abby bites her fingers off and Ellie lets Abby go making it all feel pointless. Ellie goes back home to find Dina has left her and the game ends with Ellie loosing every thing leaving you unsatisfied. Anyway the half the story I did not enjoy but the other half was great the graphics are the best voice acting is perfect and I had an ok time playing this game so I give it a 7. Expand

Completely submerged myself into the world of the game even though I disagreed with the approach they had for Joels outcome. Not mad he died, just disappointed they didn’t give him a better send off. If they had Abby SAVE Joel it wouldn’t of felt so empty when she kills him RIGHT after being saved. At the end I found myself not wanting Abby to die, even though it was obvious what Naughty dog was doing with petting the dogs, etc. I found myself hoping for a third part. When i finished this game, I had that feeling that you don't know what to do with your life after. Have not had that feeling from a game in a long time. At first, I was upset from the leaks. I thought the game would be awful but im glad I had enough faith in naughty dog to play it. When I first played as Abby, I disliked her so much. But, she really grew on me as the game progressed and honestly, I liked her character a little more than ellie and im extremely glad she doesnt die in the end. Aside from the amazing story, the scenery is just gorgeous. One of the best looking games I've seen (and I dont even have a ps4 pro). Although, the ending i felt was a bit short, itd be nice if it showed what happened to Abby and let, if they reached the fireflies. And where ellie is going to go now that she has nothing and no one left. Just such an amazing game. I really gope they release a 3rd one on ps5 that has more of ellie (not as the main characters though) it would actually be nice seeing abby as the main character and having her and ellie come to terms with each other. Or at least knowing what happens to ellie through documents or word of mouth. But i think ellies story has been told and in a third game it would be nice to see someone else carrying the torch Expand

This game is a masterpiece, an art. You can see how everyone has their own opinion about this game. It is undoubtedly magnificent in its own way. How they manipulate people’s feelings and thoughts is outstanding. This is a game for mature and open minded people. It is not a closed boxed storytelling where you get to expect and feel what is right for your hands.

This is how the game divides gamers. This game shows a very deep and dark story making where people hate it because of the expectations that has been put into the game’s shoulder. Many people were expecting a sequel where both the protagonist Ellie and Joel continues a journey concluding to the closure of their dilemma on the first game. The game was bold enough to change it’s path from having a story of bonding and connection into shattered hope. The story was told into a setting where not everyone could/would appreciate it. The story gives different messages to the players on how they would take the game. Many says that this is a manipulative story but in my case it is... but also it is not. And that is the beauty of it. In my perspective, many games al throughout the generations were more manipulative that they ONLY subject you to feel happiness, fun and laughter. This Last of Us 2 however, still manipulates you but in a way that you may feel different from the conventional where you can feel fear, rage, anger, and feeling of revenge. BUT it can also manipulate you to the feeling of sadness and sympathy, or even contentment in some cases. Here we can really identify people who can really appreciate art from those who cannot.

Many people say that many of the decisions made in the game was so unrealistic. For me, I disagree. This game tries to portray real life humans. Yes HUMANS. Humans are not perfect, sometimes decisions are very vague and misunderstood. Unrealistic storytelling for me are decisions that always make sense, decisions that are always perfect. We can say humans portrayed in this game is perfectly imperfect.

Some issues to be tackled in the story of the game is the Tragic event that happened to the protagonist. It is really a heartbreaking scene. It really does get you to feel like stopping the game for some reasons. You may feel various types of emotions up until you progress. Many would say that playing a certain role in this game makes you irritated, puke or unsatisfied. Many would feel unfairness not only in the story but also in the gameplay. This is totally understandable feeling yet effective cause i think, the game made you feel what it is supposed to be felt. Life is not fair in all levels where they have perfectly shown us in this game. We as the players have to deal with this.

This game was rated 10/10 for me not only that it has a topnotch graphics, game design and gameplay which is perfectly lifted from the previous game with few enhancements , but also because the story is phenomenal, unconventional and tragic. Tragedy is a form of a story used by novelists all over the world. To introduce this in a mass spectrum audience, specifically to the gamers community is a bold move. However, in my opinion they gave us an outstanding piece of art. Which will only be enjoyed and appreciated by limited open minded mature people who knows good art and story telling.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The Last of Us Part 2 is an ok game, which comes to be a disappointment given the expectations around it after the masterpiece the first game of the series was. The gameplay has hardly anything new compared to the first game and is stale, hardly rewarding and loaded with tension. The technical side is what shines, with fantastic graphics and music. The story is what disappoints the most. Unlike a lot of people, I actually liked Abby’s story plot (and levels, as they were gorgeous and interesting) but left disappointed as the game fails to properly explore the lore, specially of the scars, and drops a new faction towards the end without any introduction. At last, the gamer can see the ending coming miles away and it’s not satisfactory, and pretty much what one would expect. It gives the game no closure. If there is a Part 3, I do hope Naughty Dog moves from Ellie, Joel, and Abby to properly explore this world, while creating a story that people can connect to, like it was the first game. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The Last of Us Part ll is an emotional rollercoaster for its fanbase. The realism gives this game a feel that no other game quite has, the combat system gives you a constant adrenaline rush. Graphics are good yet inconsistent to the point it becomes annoying. Storywise it forces you to adapt to change in an uncomfortable yet realistic way when you think about the game’s setting and circumstances. Think of this game like a brand new car with a large dent on the driver’s side, everything works perfectly the gameplay feels amazing but the story is something hard to ignore. Now im going to stop being politically correct for a moment and start dropping the truth. The reason why this game has so many negative reviews is because they let somebody push a feminist agenda on a perfectly good game. They killed Joel right off the bat, They turned Ellie into Sigmund Freud’s wet dream, Ellie’s stealing a chick of some asian cuckboy and then you get to play as this monstrous giant female as if the people who work at character development have been living with an inferiority complex the size of the statue of liberty their whole lives. The main character Ellie journeys hundreds of miles, murders countless people, gets people she cares about hurt and killed all so she can kill one particular person, and when she finally get the chance at the end, she changes her mind and lets her go, wasting time, effort, and resources.

There are many characters, few of which are likable, contrasting the amazing mix of personalities in the first. Your main partner Dina is incredibly annoying, with her only notable trait being her constant inappropriate flirting with Ellie. Stand out characters include Lev, Yara, Owen, and Abby.

The writing is mainly focused of the characters relationships with eachother and there is little focus on the Infected or Apocalypse. There are multiple unnecessary sexual scenes that are legitimately painful to sit through.

The gameplay is largely the same as the first, with some basic improvements in exploration and combat, such as larger play areas with more verticality, new moves such as a dodge and the ability to go prone. The graphics are fantastic (albeit diminished by the intense film grain) as well as the sound design and voice acting. The game is locked at 30FPS with a Film Grain that cannot be disabled. There is also by far the largest amount of settings I have ever seen in a game making it as accessible as possible for everyone. There are significantly less environmental puzzles and cinematic moments than the original and there's much greater emphasis on combat and scavenging supplies.

The game will shift between playing as Ellie and playing as Abby, which have completely different equipment and weapons. The story will often shift time periods like a Tarantino movie which is detrimental to the plots pacing.

Overall The Last of Us 2 is not exactly "Bad", but after 7 years it is definitely a below-average disappointment and I have no desire to play it again.

    Best game I've ever played.

You're honestly deluded if you think this is a bad game. Giving it a 1? Pathetic.

It was a rollercoaster and it was amazing. Kept me guessing the whole time and I didn't know at what point the game was going to end.

The Last of Us Part II is the high point of the PlayStation 4. The plot is controversial, but the game is the incredibly addictive adventure of Ellie, from which it is impossible to pull away from the opening and to the very end.

Not everyone is going to enjoy the motives of The Last of Us Part II. But if you try and manage to accept the subliminal and not so subtle messages as a fact that the world has gone awry and that people have the need to have somewhere or someone to belong to as their own way out, then... You will witness the boundaries of gaming expand. You will witness a true masterpiece.

If you loved the original for its great characters and well-paced story – stay away from this game. However, if you’re aching to sink into the depths of depression, or just want to cut some throats and burn some zombies – Part II will deliver. [Issue#247, p.72]
