This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. . Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Despite what everyone says about the game, I genuinely believe that this game is yet another masterpiece from Naughty Dog. This game really forces its audience to do things they don't want to; it forces them to think and ponder some extremely big philosophical questions truly. Yet, like any game, this one is not perfect.

GAMEPLAY: The Last of Us gave the world a revolutionized gameplay, and this game expands on that gameplay. A significant aspect of the gameplay that caught my eye was the smoothness of it all; the game did not feel clunky or stiff, much like the first one was. As well as that, they added a sort of skill tree system where to get the next perk; you have to buy the one right before it. Unlike most skill trees, this game is really more of a skill column, which did take me a while to get used to, but it grew on me. Now for one of the controversial topics, the gameplay section of Abby. Depending on how you play, this section takes roughly ten hours. This section of the game really makes or breaks the game for a lot of people, the combat becomes slower just because Abby is a more heavyset woman than Ellie. In terms of gameplay, it doesn't change much more.

STORY: The story is really what turns everyone away from this game. Neil Druckman (the director) definitely expected there to be a lot of backlash and hate for the product he and thousands of other created. It wasn't fan service and believe it or not that angered so many people, hence why the user score is so low. The number one thing people had an issue with is how they killed off Joel, I'll admit it it is a really tough plot point, but this is the story that is created, it is sad but what is wrong with it? Characters die, especially in a world like this, in fact, I appreciate that they killed Joel because they went for a challenging story that would test anyone who played. After Joel is killed the story continues with Ellie going to Seattle with Dina (Ellie's partner). This area of the game is filled with a lot of small beautiful moments surrounded by an overwhelming atmosphere of anger and dread, this continues until you get to Abby's section of the game. By this point, you know that Abby is the one who killed Joel so rightfully no one really wants to play as Abby. While this may be the case for many, I implore whoever reads this to just continue with an open mind. Abby is a beautiful character with a life very similar to Ellie's. Joel did a lot of bad things to Abby and her world around her, things that would make anyone go mad with anger and revenge. This section is so vital to the game and I believe is what really makes it the masterpiece that it is. There are some aspects of the story I would change but they are not major plot issues, I just would've loved more from Ellie and the new people in her life.

All I have to say about the graphics is that they are fantastic, I have zero complaints.

Overall I'd give the gameplay a 10/10 and the story an 8/10. This game is now one of my favorites of all time and I will never regret the money nor time i Have spent on this game. I am a very proud fan of this series and the messages that come with it.

The way story, writing, acting, game play and setting are carefully interwoven to increase the effectiveness and impact of all the single constituent parts is exhilarating.

This is a tale, an experience, that will haunt you for days and nights, long after you've put down the controller. These people will stay with you, find a place into your heart, and they will force you to reflect upon yourself as well as their actions.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I have played through the game twice at this point just to have a good opinion and to give the best review possible. This game gains a lot of controversy and now I understand why. It is not a 10/10 game as the reviewers say, but it is not a 5.6 or a 0 as the users rate it either. The game is definitely flawed and is not as perfect as the first one was. As both a naughty dog and the last of us fan, I waited for very long to play this game. I wanted to see out the story and the perfect cliffhanger the first one ended with. But sadly, by the end I was left confused and frankly not satisfied with the story or the characters.

It has positives, with which Im gonna start. The gameplay is fantastic. Even though they only added proning, dodging and jumping to the game, it gives the already great gameplay the first one had even more depth and options to have fun with. I found the mechanics great and the weapons good as well. The game is its best when played on survival difficulty since it forces you to use all available resources in any given situation. The graphics are also amazing and breathtaking, the environments and the action sequences are great as you might expect from naughty dog. the sound design is one of the best I have ever been exposed to. Playing this with good quality headset will enhance the experience greatly. And as you might expect from a naughty dog game, it involves and uses your emotions very well.

But I do regret to say this game has very low lows. The characters and the story are very poor compared to any previous naughty dog game. It felt as though they crumbled by the pressure of the greatness they achieved with the first game. For me, playing half the game as Abby was a huge disappointment. I did not care for her. I did not want to play as the person who killed the character I loved so much from the first game. I found myself rushing through the parts where I had to play as her, both because I thought they werent gonna be as long or as relevant. I did not had any interest at all about who she was, who she liked and disliked and what her background is. I did find some value in understanding what her motivations were for killing Joel, but that did not justify me playing so much as her.

I bought this game to play as Ellie. It is as simple as that. I wanted to see out her story, I wanted to understand how everything affected her. And even though the game has a very clear message that the past will haunt you, that revange is not always good, and that this girl that you loved lost her innocence, It felt as though they almost completely destroyed all the flawless character development they achieved in the first game. I repeat, I wanted to play as Ellie, and halfway through the game I found out that I would not play as her as much as I wanted to.

This brings me to how much the writting and the gameplay favored Abby. She gets some of the coolest action sequences and some of the most relevant moments of the story. But the thing is I did not care about her at all. It just felt as grinding for me, just to come back to where the story involves Ellie again. Then, Im left with me still playing as Abby getting to almost kill Ellie even though I did not want to. I found myself letting Abby be killed by Ellie just to get the satisfaction, but the game didnt give me that choice. It just pulled me back to do what I was suppossed to be doing.

Naughty dog is an expert in story driven games. But this game is too story driven for its own good. It tells the story they want to tell. It doesnt give you any choice in whatever happens in the story, and that is not always bad, but when you were so emotionally invested from playing the first game, it just feels like they are manipulating you into completing the story they want to.

Overall the game is pretty damn good and it achieves a lot. It is deffinitely one of the best games i played this generation on the ps4, but I was very dissapointed with how it turned out story wise. The characters deserved better, Joel and Ellie deserved better. I did not care for Abby, for anyone she loved, and for anyone she met. It felt as if all the characters in her side of the story were just shoved in there and they expected you to like and undesrtand them. But I didnt, and I doubt anyone did. I played The last of Us and I cared for Joel and Ellie because of that. The sections of the game that have joel and Ellie are some of the best, but they are so few and far between that the game just ruins them.

So.. I give this game an 8 because I am a naughty dog fan and a The last of us fan,but if I was not i Could have given it a 7 or lower. Gameplay is good, graphics and audio are good, but story, progression and characters are poor, especially after all the hype and expectation the first game caused.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. People giving this game a 0 are just as bad as people giving this game a 10.

Yes, the story is awful. They layer tropes within tropes, with my favorite example being the child who runs away from the cult because they are being forced into a marriage with an older man... but don't want to because they are... transgendered? I am all for equality and consider myself somewhat of a social justice warrior IRL, but this just feels like they had a story put together and then decided to inject hot-button social issues into every plot point where they could fit them. The problem though is that even if the story didn't include the SJW overload, it would still be a mediocre story with an unsatisfying ending.

At the end of the day though, the fact is that this game is a masterpiece in level design, gameplay and graphics. If you could skip all cut-scenes and just have an adventure in post-apocalyptic Seattle hunting down bad guys and zombies while scrambling for scant supplies, the game would stand among one of the best games of the year.

I do understand why ppl don’t like the game or the story bc while playing it I wasn’t sure about it either but the thing is I actually understood it. The game that u play makes u feel so much emotions that other games wouldn’t and it worked apparently since so many ppl hate the game. While playing it I felt sad, angry, happy, scared, confused and more. I remember I hated Abby so much and I didn’t want to play as her but I’ve actually grown to like her. She did grow as a character, she became a better person. Lev and yara made her better. At the end I was disappointed in Ellie for leaving her family just to get revenge on someone. And when she was fighting Abby I’m so glad she didn’t kill her bc she still has her humanity. At the end Ellie lost everything bc she was driven by revenge, and I think Abby grew more as a person than Ellie bc she learned how to let go. I love Ellie and I’ve actually grown to like Abby. I rated the game as a 10 bc the story is so good and it made me feel so many things that not even other games could do. The gameplay was also amazing and the graphics too. This has to be like my favorite game of all time. I just hope everyone can stop calling the game bad and understand it bc it is a masterpiece just like the first one. Expand

The thing which a lot of people hate is the plot and I understand why, but I don't support them, because I didn't wait the same story about relationships between Joel and Ellie as in the original game. The first twist maked me cry but not hate game only because of the death of great character. The story of TLOU 2 is very complicated and deep. If you want to feel this game fully, you should play on your own from the beggining to the end and without getting spoilers. It's sad that some people don't give this game the chance after the first twist. I really wish more people could feel this game as I feel. Moreover, I was suffering from depression for some days after I had finished game.
This game is not only about redemption. It’s about self-hate. Ellie hates herself because she feel her guilt over her attitude toward her close person. The self-hate became hate to all world. Also, ND shows the path of degradation and evolution of the antagonist and protagonist and It’s amazing. It allows players to feel characters fully. I mean that how ND make the story about redemption is very creative and exciting. All I want to say that you can hate some events of the story, but you can’t deny its greatness.
Gameplay is ideal, but there is no a lot of new features. ND didn’t create something new and incredible. Anyway, the gameplay is interesting and, what I like very very much, cinematic. Playing tlou 2 is like watching film due to amazing animations. I believe that games must be aimed at cinematic gameplay.
And, of course, ND’s insane details which cost a lot of crunches, energy and nerves for developers.
In conclusion, I would like to say again that The Last of Us Part 2 is the game which gamers can be proud of. Naughty Dog risked very much creating this plot, but, in my opinion, the result was amazing. Thank you, Naughty Dog for this experience. I am looking forward for TLOU 3 and new IP.

Going prone in tall grass to avoid sweeping enemies feels badass, and melee combat specifically is probably the most fun aspect. As fun as the gameplay is, it’s not revolutionary by any means, and it’s not the kind of gameplay that can be done for hours on end without boredom eventually setting in. In the first game, this was counteracted by the games amazing narrative. When the gameplay began to feel slow, the story was your motivator for reaching the next segment. This game does not have that same cushion. The story manages to disrespect fans of the original by narratively discarding everything that made the protagonist duo appealing. Worse, it does so in a way meant to antagonize you, the player. It does so by carrying out its flawed narrative in a manner confirmed by the creator to create negative emotions within you. Hate, sadness, grief. In a typical film this does give stakes to the plot, but there’s usually resolution by the plot’s end to satisfy these feelings of motivation. TLOU2 does not provide this. Instead the game crawls to a snail pace meant to keep you mentally trapped in a dark place for 20-25 hours.

When the games climax finally arrives, you are denied the closure the game has set you off to pursue. For lack of a better word “Narrative blue balls”. There is meant to be some sort of method to the madness, and the game’s director has gone on record saying he knew some would love the narrative while others would dislike it. For me the landing simply did not land, and this franchise would be be left dead and buried Lest they ruin what rubble they’ve left of this once great franchise. I have been waiting 7 years for this game. I already expected Joel death But NOT LIKE THIS!

I already super depressed about HK problem and I am now in another country and looking for a job.

I just wanted to escape the reality a bit and enjoy what Ellie and Joel facing in Part 2. Then what kind of **** you feeded me? Joel and Tommy become an Idiots, After 10 hrs playing, feel like final battle with Addy and you need me to control that **** murderer for another 10 hours? WTF?And even her story, enemy and weapon even better than Ellie? You know what, everyone dont **** care her story. We just wanted her died. NOW

Either you are crazy, or you just think we will just accept all thing like the Joel and Tommy in the game. Even we play Addy first. The reason of killing Joel is not convincing.... remember Joel just saved her **** life.... so did the Levs. Why she kill Joel without hesitating then agaisnt her ex-friend because of Levs. It doesnt make any sense.

And finally, Ellie already give up revenge, you force her to revenge. Kill ton of people then give up when almost killed her? WTF. And she lost everything because this revenge? How about Addy, she revenge To Joel then why story show she is “good guy” and Ellie is “bad guy”? Come on, this is the end of world! Everything is “Grey” and no right or wrong. Political correct is just bull**** in that world.

BTW, I am gay and I am Asian. Dont use us as an excuse to cover up your ****ty story. And political correct, right? Then why make joke for asian ONLY? So Asian doesnt need political correct?

I am from Hong Kong, I am not going to snowflake, just wondering your definition of “political correct”. Part 1 got a lot of political correct thing either like gay and lesbian. But to be honest, I dont care if Ellie is lesbian or even Joel is gay. If the story is good, they will be good. You even doesnt need to write more bull**** like part 2 to make them “correct”.

Finally, The Last of Us only got Part 1. Joel lie to Ellie and having happy life in Jackson. The End.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. One of the best games of the year, up to this point. For starters, graphics are from another planet, the game is just beatiful to look at, naughty dog made a masterpiece out of the pro and i'm sure for slim/fat too. Story is not just a continuing of the 1st past, is more of a step forward towards the enviroment as a whole. The game is dark, the human urge to survive, the hunger for more that even in these times is not absent and the game of power that people play for decades. A punch in the guts, to have a look at humanity naked. The Abby part of the game seemed as it was necessary for the storytelling, it was a great idea to get to see the side of the "bad guy", the way it was written made it almost crazy to end her. Storywise Ellie was more mature, too, after the event that kickstarted the game. Mechanisms are not very different from part 1, with some great additions that were necessary to be present. This game is a must play. Expand

Incredible graphics and animations, the technical team did an impressive job really. Same goes for the acting, just brilliant. I would love to give it a much better rating.

BUT the storytelling is so so horrible, to a point where I could not enjoy the game. I have finished it but all I am left with is regret. I have completed TLOU1 several times, but will 100% not touch part 2 again.

The game forces you morally wrong choices over and over, then tells you how bad of a person you are for doing so many horrible things. The amount of senseless brutality and graphic violence is plain stupid.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I honestly loved the game. There were times where the story got a little hairy but it was able to pull it all together. I liked that I was able to play through the aftermath of what occurred in the first game. See how Ellie reacted when she found out what Joel did and how he lied. It was such a good revenge story for both Ellie and Abby. Surprisingly I gained a bit of sympathy for what occurred to Abby and enjoyed seeing her side of the story. One of my favorite parts of the game was the fight between Abby and Ellie in the theater. It was cool that you were playing as the antagonist instead of the protagonist while fighting against the main "good" guy. The story overall was fantastic as we saw development on both sides. Ellie gained a more brutal personality as the game went on as Abby gained more compassion. The parallel between Abby and Ellie were very pronounced. The last thing I want to touch on is the fact of how diverse the game is with there being a lesbian couple that wasn't over sexualized and the topic of transphobia was shown with what happened to Lev. I would highly recommend this game. Expand

I did not want to hold the controller to move the main character towards the end. Such a bizarre experience not wanting to pick up the controller or click buttons to progress the story because I wanted nothing to do with this person who only caused pain and suffering for herself and those around her. Near the end I seriously considered not progressing past a certain point in one of the scenes where I did not want to do what the game was forcing me to do. Would love to have been in the meeting room when the creatives were coming up with this story. Clearly they wanted to do something different, to push some boundaries, but they chose to go in a way that for me was just very distasteful. It's an emotional rollercoaster, and will leave you with a very bitter taste in your mouth. You as the player can choose not to see beyond that, but I don't think that's the right approach to enjoy this game. It's a much more enriching experience if you accept it's not meant to be a "happy sequel", what truly matters here is how it affects you as a human being. It's meant to provoke you, just like any noteworthy piece of Art.

The thing is, this game will reflect right back at you what you make of it. It's disturbing how many times it feels like the game stares you in the eye, and how many times it feels like you're staring at yourself in the mirror.
And you WON'T like what you see.
But what you take with you from that experience is a choice you don't get to make in many videogames. It's a choice that happens inside of you as an individual, choosing to look for the light, to grow, to be better than those who hurt you. You're never forced to like, or forgive the people who hurt you, you're simply put in a situation in which you can (if you want) choose to consider that there's no black and white, and to think twice before answering to violence with more violence. You're never forced to sympathize, but the game provokes you to empathise.

Just think about how much better the world could be if we all did the same. And in a videogame that features a zombie apocalypse, but is ultimately about humanity (or what's left of it), I think that's a brilliant point.

MajorMost people rating negatively are doing so because its not the story they wanted instead of evaluating the story for what it is, and what this story is....... is a narrative nightmare with a beginning that is rushed, a middle that is hollow and flat for Ellie's portion and disingenuous and emotionally manipulative for Abby's portion, and an ending that is not justified by the middle. Major story moments that would make the game great feel unearned and contrived for the sake of plot. Also, Ellie's much of portion is spent alone which made the experience dry.

Every single side character, besides Lev, is merely a slave to the plot. They are all replaceable plot devices that act only to serve the plot's message even if that means acting out of character. Lev is the only side character that directly affects and develops one of the main protagonists, Abby, while undergoing his own arc and being enjoyable in dialogue and gameplay (like hopping across the broken skyscrapers), and even he ends up doing by far the stupidest thing in the whole story even though he seems very intelligent.

The worst part about this game is the pacing. While the flashbacks are enjoyable for both characters, they are placed awkwardly in the story that diminish the content of the flashback while diminishing its contribution. Had these flashbacks not been flashbacks but rather been events shown in chronological order (besides Abby's motivations for doing what she did; this should've been shown at the "golf course" after she takes that first swing and the screen cuts to black) switching back and forth between Ellie and Abby, the story would've benefited as we could be shown the true motivations for both characters' vengeance and could understand and sympathize better with both beforehand. By making these scenes flashbacks, it created a huge disconnect between what the player knows and what the character we are playing as knows. The middle of the story (the Seattle portion) would have benefited from switching back and forth between the two at the end of each day in Seattle since the cut away from the climax of the story to Abby's portion was extremely jarring and felt unearned and forced. Also, long and drawn out combat sequences, especially for segments featuring infected, made much of the gameplay feel like filler. Just as a combat sequence was ending... more enemies would appear. Even if all the pacing issues were resolved in some way, the major story moments would still feel unearned and contrived.

Both Abby and Ellie's decisions at the end of the second act and at the end, respectively, feel unearned and forced for the sake of the plot's message. Little to nothing justifies these decisions, and its the main reason why this story is a complete disaster. Also, the boss fight at the end of the second act was the most disgusting and unearned boss fights in gaming history and to force the player to engage in it is unforgivable.

Overall, a bad story told extremely poorly and in a sloppy, messy manner featuring two unlikable protagonists, weak and forgettable (besides Lev) side characters, and an underutilized soundtrack as much of the game is spent without a companion for banter. If you know what misery feels like, do not play this game because this is literally a misery simulator with the only moments of happiness are poorly-timed flashbacks.

This is the worst story ever created by a triple A developer, regardless if it was a sequel or a stand-alone game.

-Game play, is 10/10 it can be very challenging, however it is very satisfying
-Graphics, 10/10 graphically it is very well designed
-Story, maybe 8/10 it is very emotional and brutal, you can feel how sick people can be and how no one is a hero
-length, 10/10 although i wanted more game play hours but it is lengthy and very engaging most of the time
-Horror 10/10 it is way more horrifying than the original and now you actually feel how terrifying it can be to live in such a world

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. It's amazing how divisive this game is... I was floored by it. It consider it not simply the best narrative in gaming, but one of the best narratives in ANY medium. And while playing I kept waiting for whatever happens that caused so much controversy and hate. At first, I thought it was Joel dying - but that didn't make sense to me. Game of Thrones (before the last seasons) killed off tons of beloved characters and people still almost universally loved it. Was it that fact that Ellie is gay? That couldn't be it. We knew that from the trailers and the DLC for the first game. Maybe some didn't realize it, but there certainly can't be enough people angry at a character being gay to justify so many negative reviews. Then Lev came about, and I thought maybe it's that - but how could, what quite possibly be my favorite character be hated by so many unless it's bigotry. But I need to believe there's not enough bigots to account for so much dislike of the game. No that couldn't be it. So I kept playing, figured the problem would reveal itself later - but all the way until credits rolled the story just kept impressing me more and more. I do not understand how so many people dislike it. It's puzzling.

I've read several negative reviews, and I just can't seem to see the other side of things. I assume it's the same for them, they probably think I'm blind or crazy for liking it so much (or assume I'm lying for some reason). It's baffling how divisive this story can be. It feels like it's literally a coin toss and you either hate the story or love it. I guess I consider myself lucky I fell on the love it side.

But everyone can agree that graphics, gameplay and other aspects of production are amazing. The only warning I'll give to people wanting to play it - it is a very linear game. No choices affecting the story, the level design is well done but it is point A to point B. Which is exactly how the first game was, so if you liked the first game, you'll like this game - as far as gameplay goes. As for the story, I guess you'll need to flip the coin.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. There's no denying that this game deserves all the plaudits it can get from a technical perspective. Sound design, graphics, animation and the combat is exceptional. For that, the team deserve to be congratulated.

However, the story is another matter. It's clear that it must have suffered at the hands of the politics at play here. Originally, when others were slamming the gay, female-led story before it had even come out (!), I was up there defending it - stating it didn't matter - that the story is what matters and if the story is good, who cares what a characters persuasion is.

But that's the problem - it's NOT a good story. It's just - dull. Ellie has turned into a lean, mean killing machine. There's a body count here higher than Hot Shots Part Deux. There's little, other than the killing of Joel, to support just how angry she's become. There's also little choice - particularly in areas where choice should matter. For example, in one of the final confrontations - I didn't WANT to attack Abby. I wanted to let her off - like she did Ellie. However I wasn't allowed to make that choice.

The writing is also lazy. So much so, they squeezed in as much of the current zeitgeist as they could muster. Again, if it was relevant to the story then sure - go ahead. But it's clear that it's been injected into it to make it relevant.

It's also way too long. It took me 30 hours to complete it. I was done with it by 16. It's repetitive, way too much in the way of boring cutscenes (the farmhouse family skit towards the end was just too much), and when Ellie sets off again I actually got annoyed.

I'd actually completed the first part just before the 2nd came out (never had enough time), so for me the first was very, very fresh. The only part of the 2nd game I actually enjoyed the story was Abby's - seeing if from her perspective, how the couples' rampage across the US affected her. That's about it though.

I'd say borrow it from a friend. Experience it, but don't be surprised if you give up at the 14-16 hour mark. You're in it for the long haul, but sadly those extra hours won't make a damn bit of difference to the story.

The movie left out a few things and changed a few others... I was in an emotional turmoil leaving the theatre when a friend ask me; so what do you think? What’s the score? I gave it first a 7. He quickly responded “ have you ever seen a better film?” At that point I realised I gave it a score based on what I thought the movie was going to be like .. not how or what is actually was... of course I answered “no”. And gave it a 10.

Same thing with this game. As a Huge fan of the first game I had a ton of expectations about the game And thoughts how it was going to play out. Did it play out the way I thought it would? No! Did it make the game worse because of that? Absolutely no! Was I heartbroken by the end ? Yes! Were my emotions going hay wire? Yes! Have Any game ever affected me like this one emotionally ? Never! Graphics better? Few! Game play as good? Few!
And Finally! Even though it didn’t play out as I thought it would! Have I ever played a better game taking all aspects of gaming into consideration? Hell no! Have I ever scored any game with a 10? No. It this a first? Yes! It’s a master piece....

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Pros: level design / voice acting / atmosphere

Middle ground: gameplay - it contributes to the atmosphere yet at times is very repetitive

    Cons: Writing

First off, the whole premise of the game feels wrong. At the end of 1, we`re left with two questions. How`s Ellies and Joels relationship going to develop and what about the cure. Both do not play a part in 2.

Their relationship evolves through flashbacks, which are more about Ellies journey (clinging to revenge + forgiving Joel for his lie and maybe herself for accepting it). To me they lacked weight and emotion bc Joel was already dead.

The cure doesn`t matter at all. Why didn`t the remaining fireflies take the notes about the surgery with them? Is Abbys dad the only doctor left in the world? Mel could have tried. If sacrificing herself was so important to Ellie, why did she go back to Jackson instead of trying to locate the remaining Fireflies - after travelling back to Boston all by herself?

The story evolves through various conveniences and plot holes: Why is the gate open, when Joel, Tommy and Abby ride for her friends. A hole in the fence, so that Ellie can slip through just in time to watch Joel die. Why is Mel allowed to go on a mission, considering she`s pregnant and humanity is dying out? Why does Abby take Yara with her to go after Lev? She only got one arm, just went trough the amputation and is a huge liability. Etc.

People acting out of character: Joel and Tommy giving away information to armed strangers, when Joel would`ve killed Henry and Sam in 1 and could smell an abush from a mile away. Ellie screaming Joels name when she finds the hutt but doesn`t jet know who`s inside. Abbys group not guarding the house when seconds ago there was a horde outside. Or them letting Ellie and Tommy go, when the WLF sure has a habbit of letting people off the hook easyly.

Trying to depict a brutal and gritty and therefore real world, yet everybody shooting at you does have unlimmitted ammo, you can get all wet but your gear still works, the body types of Abby and fat-man-slaver at the end in a world where nobody gets enough food, or your attack-dog usually going straight after every Scar (i.e. Lev and Yara in the aquarium) but can still be sneaky silent, when you go into stealth mode yourself.

Trying to make the player feel guilty by having NPCs shout out names when you kill their comrades is pathetic, bc you get forced to do so plenty of times. The gamplay doesn`t change at all and therefore doesn`t reflect Ellies or moreso Abbys realization that violence isn`t always the way to go.

The structure of the game is the worst part of it: It should have been about Abby and her crew. Getting to know them and building up an emotional attachement. You should have revealed that they`re hunting Joel somwhere in the middle or right at the end. That would`ve created conflict for the player. Instead you introduce Abby as Joels killer and expect the player to sympathise with her afterwards. In about 10 hours, when we had a whole game growing used to Joel and Ellie.
I wonder why people don`t like her.

Speaking of Abby: To me she`s a sociopath. Not only does she kill Joel, she tortures him (he himself did no such thing) and then proceeds to play with dogs and joking around with Manny as if nothing happend. No remorse.

One could argue, that she rescues Yara and Lev to attone for her deeds, but it isn`t made clear. A game is a visual experience. Leaving that much up to interpretation is fine for books or if you have a capable live action actor. What`s your message worth when people don`t get it? What`s the moral here? Go brutally murder sb and never pay the price for it. As long as you`re nice to some random kids you`ll be fine (losing her friends is no punishment, bc the player didn`t spend enough time with them to get invested).

Same goes for Ellie. It`s an internal struggle about forgiving Joel and herself, yet she never earns that. Hunting Abby, killing thousands, giving up on her family. Even at the end, when she travells a considerable amount of miles and has time to rethink, she still wants to kill Abby. But the player is to believe that an image of Joel playing guitar is enough to let Abby go free, when Ellie never showed enough doubt along the way.

If I´d be fair, I´d give it a 5/10. Maybe even a 7/10 if it wouldn`t be a sequel to 1. But for striking down youtubers left and right, for proudly stating you wanted to make a controversial game and then whining when there`s controversy, for payed reviews, for accusing people to not like strong females or whatever kind of representation when the only thing they do is call out the flaws in your story and most importantly for false advertisement ND gets a 0/10.

Only way this`ll turn out okay is, if there is a 3. But now it won`t be made, bc no one is going to by it.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. For these past few weeks, I've been giving up sleeping hours to use whatever "free time" I have during the night to indulge myself and experience what I believe is a landmark in interactive storytelling - the Last of Us: Part 2.

Many people think modern video games are just glorified Pacman, electronic reflex spazzers with no essence or soul - far removed from literature, cinema or TV series. This cannot be further from the truth, and this game is a shining example of this fact. The Last of Us: Part 2 is one of the best story-driven epics any modern medium has to offer, and ranks among the the most memorable of any series, movies and literature that I have experienced in the past decade.

Set in a post-apocalyptic United States suffering through a cataclysmic plague, the Last of Us: Part 1 was the story of two survivors - Joel, a man tasked with escorting a young girl, Ellie, across the United States - and the incredible hardships they face on their journey to a safe haven where a light at the end of tunnel might possibly be found, brought upon them by the effect of a deadly infection that has decimated the world. Infected humans litter the streets, having succumbed to a fungus that turns them into rabid monsters, while all civilization has broken down. While this is the backdrop, the Last of Us: Part 1 was a story of loss, a story of fatherhood, a story of acceptance and of hard choices, and ultimately - of hope.

The Last of Us: Part 2 continues the story of these characters in this terrible world, but focuses on a different theme. As the game begins and the characters you love so much go through something unfathomable, you can't help but feel the blood running cold in your veins, as if your soul has left your body, as you just lust for a violent revenge and terrible retribution, but as Nietschze's famous quote goes:
"He who fights with monsters should be careful lest he thereby become a monster. And if thou gaze long into an abyss, the abyss will also gaze into thee."

The game's story is interestingly inspired by the head writer's experiences growing up in Israel. He recalls watching footage of the 2000 Ramallah lynching, where a Palestinian crowd killed and mutilated the bodies of two Israel Defense Forces reservists, and how, after hearing the cheering crowds, his mind turned to violent thoughts about bringing the perpetrators to justice. I am certain many Israelis have had the same thoughts. However, later comes the realization of the reality of the wishes we hope for and the choices we make, and the vicious cycle that is revenge.

Keeping this in mind, the game dares and uses rhetorical devices and literary tools that would be complex for any author or director to utilize. As the narrative progresses, it causes you to question who you are and what you believe. The script is flipped on you, and you go through an emotional journey that is difficult but enlightening, in the end. This game is a bold and monumental undertaking, and is filled to the brim with a passion for pushing the boundaries of what is possible in storytelling. In my opinion, only interactive media can even attempt to create an experience quite like this.

In the end, the Last of Us: Part 2 is a harrowing, meaningful, challenging and tragically exquisite story, and is a testament to the efficacy of video games as artistic expression.

It's Saturday, August 8. I just finished the game about 20 mins ago. I had heard that there was some controversy in the ratings coming in. But avoided everything so I could give the game an honest review after I experienced the full story.

The sum it up, the game is beautifully painful, like Johnny Cash's rendition of Hurt. And to be honest... it's amazingly refreshing. Often times media will be Disney-fied, it will become over polished, too clean, and will just tick the standard bells and whistles.

Tlou2 storyline is not clean, just as the characters pickup dirt and grime on their skin and clothes, they also pickup emotional baggage and scars. These are characters who are not necessarily trying to be a hero, but just trying to get by in this fractured world. Its this journey that sets the game apart, and even though parts of the journey are rough and scary, you come out feeling alive, aware of your thoughts..aware that like the game, life is flawed.

My only gripes are the expanded explorable areas combined with having collectables in the the game, disrupt the flow of the story. And while its a choice to look for stuff not, I felt that I was missing out on potential items or story material by not. The other problem with this is while exploring a section an NPC may go into another room while having a conversation which you end up missing. The solution at times is to stop and wait for all the dialogue to finish then look for stuff which..again breaks the flow of the game.

My advice, only explore if its convenient. You can always get stuff on another playthrough if you are a completist. Push through the dark parts of the game and you'll find an experience that despite clickers and bloaters is remarkably human and one of the best experiences of this generation.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Beware the bandwagon haters on this one. Naughty Dog gave us a tremendous game here that emulates a lot of what we see now in The Walking Dead. The living, in a post-apocalyptic world, join the dead as being serious threats to our livelihood as they all pursue a better world. You take the reigns and feel the hope and helplessness of all of those characters, who have deep backstories that Naughty Dog allows us to explore. While we may thirst for just the senseless 1st person shooter (and there are elements of that here sure) what we get instead is a humanistic trial of survival and a game that questions your moral compass. Perhaps the only downside is that there are no real choices to make in the game...do you choose to kill or simply to wound in your battle? do you question who is innocent or guilty? are there characters who can choose to help or hurt you? The answer is no, and that is a beautifully missed opportunity in this game that begs for it at times. Still the gameplay, responsiveness, and AI is relatively flawless and TLOU2 is a game that is hard to put down. the choice of weaponry is strong and how you build your character is a reflection on the type of assassin you want to be (stealth vs. guns-a-blaze?). At times the story does get bogged down with cut scenes, and it sometimes gets clunky or off the rails is terms of strategy (the blob boss in the hospital is the perfect example), but otherwise the game is intense, bold, and scary as it is endearing and tender. I admit I was annoyed by the oaf-ish way Joel was portrayed in contrast to the original, how major characters were built up only to get shot in the head and all memory of them gone forever, and the Ellie-Dina love affair felt forced and I did find myself, at times, rooting for Abby. It made me question the game negatively until you realize, that's the point. It's supposed to leave you stunted and unsure how to feel, much like the characters in the game itself. The original LOU was perhaps the greatest game ever made and any sequel was going to leave some fans disappointed, but to give the game a 0 or 1 rating, is just flat-out stupid and can't be taken seriously. TLOU2 is truly a masterpiece in its own right, as a completionist is took me about 35 sitting hours to finish on hard and as soon as it was over I was ready for TLOU3. Expand
