The mechanics and the graphics are awesome and made my full play through generally enjoyable but sadly the forced story narratives that treats their pre-existing characters like their dumb morons with no previous survival experience and don't get me started on the fact that you spend half the campaign as Abby... The Last of Us 2 is the best survival-horror game. The graphics and the atmosphere strike the imagination, different narrative moves and plot twists keep a player in suspense. It's not just a game, it's an experience, and I'm happy that I had a luck to play TLoU :)

Great graphics, some nice new touches, some nerve gripping moments but ultimately all drowned out by a game that has put politics and a politic view of the director on gender equality and feminism centre stage at the sake of a video game. The game could of gone a thousand ways but ambushed its fans with a misleading trailer and the death of a major character two hours in for the political message. The heart breaking. Politics should take a back foot back seat role in video games. Let games be engaging emotionally but don't make them unbearable. Expand

I don't understand the negative reviews. The story was intriguing and nuanced, mixing morality up to the point of not really knowing how to feel, but forcing you to feel regardless. The game-play and visuals are solid. Maybe I'm missing something, but I enjoyed the game thoroughly.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I held off buying this after all the review bombing, making the assumption their pure volume meant the game had significant issues. But I relented and went in, eyes open to all the potential issues. Some of the story/dialog was certainly choppy ... but if you're gonna run a marathon, you're gonna have a few dud strides. I dont think the story is the mess some claim it to be. Abby's story and arc is quite good, if anything Ellie comes off as the more murderous. As others have said, the story runs too long and is overwritten but that's nothing an editor couldnt have fixed. It's not an SJW story and Lev is a thoughtful character. We also see the love and care Naughty Dog put into the game in every single pixel. The execution is superb. For that ND should be immensely proud. With a few cuts, the story could have been very strong BUT here's the main issue for me. This is the Last of Us 3, not 2. If we had another instalment with Joel and Ellie adventuring together as 2 then revenge to tie up the trilogy, it would have given players more time to come to the grips with Joel's demise. In any case, it's a good game and takes the player on a decent journey and is worth the price of entry. Expand

Overall the game is okay. It's probably the best looking console game on the market right now. Real-time game graphics and cinematic graphics are top-notch. Combat is very well polished and enemy AI is some of the best I've seen for stealth-type games. The last good thing I will say is that the acting is well done with the material they had to work with.

That's where all my good things end. I think Naughty Dog was successful in that I felt hate, and I felt what Ellie was feeling: to be emotionally exhausted. The problem? The whole experience was not worth it in the end. They risked a lot in this game, and in my optinion it did not pay off. i enjoyed Ellie at first, but they wrote her into a tragic trope. Always getting beat down, always making the wrong decisions, and generally just kind of acting dumb. Her story arc was narrow and felt lacking in the end. Despite all other achievements, story mattered most and it was not good or satisfying.

Our other new character Abby, is also not very interesting. She shows no remorse for her actions early in the story and generally seems to not care all that much about her friends. They try to make you like her, but it's all surface level. There's no real depth to her and I didn't feel like she was relatable. Near the end of the game, they have essentially morphed Abby into Joel 2.0 and it didn't feel earned.

I wanted to love this game, and I struggled for literally weeks after beating to try and find some redeeming quality to make myself like it. I couldn't. In the end i just questioned the point, and wish with all my heart that it would have been different.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. So, this game, this is a hard thing to critique, unlike another persons, I wont insult anyone in here. I will critique 3 important things I consider important for this game, soudntrack, gameplay and story-telling. So, soundtrack, this soundtrack was not as good as the first game's. We could not really feel Santaolalla a lot in this one, not even in the main menu, only in the ending credits, so the music was not that of a thing, 6/10 in soundtrack. Now gameplay, the same thing as in the first game (which I really liked), it was a really good mix : how you manage the weapons, the things you could do, really nice, and as I already explained this gameplay in the first game critique, I wont do it here, 8.5/10 on gameplay. And now, story-telling, so, first thing, Joel's death. It doesn't bother me the fact that they've killed him, what really bothers me is HOW they killed him. In the first game we saw that he didn't trust anyone, he almost didn't trust in Bill, his friend. But now he says his name, he says where he lives blah blah blah. Now, lets think, Abby's father gets shot, just ONE shot and Joel didn't even knew he was Abby's father or anything, and how does he have to pay for that? Nothing, only a lot of hits in the skull with a golf club, great. Then, the thing about Yara, that mission when we have to look for medicines for her, that was one hour totally lost since she ends up dying, so....you know, that part was just so the game could cost 60 dollars. Then the ending, you can say that the lesson of "Revenge is not good" was ok, but, this was not the game to include that, this game was about to make a cure to the Cordyceps, and now, nobody cares about the cure. If somehow the Lord gave me a second chance a that moment, I would prevent this game from being real. Thats all I can say, 61/100 Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Considering events of the first part I didn't like the idea of the plot - to make the main character dead at the beginning and make vengeance as plot of the whole game. Sometimes nonsense happens, especially at the final part of the game. There are also good ideas, for example, watching the story not only with the main character's eyes, with the antagonist's too. However, too much time was spent playing the second character - a half of the game. The dramatic constituent's strong, I cried several times and felt really bad for main characters. The gameplay is identical with first part's one, sadly almost no innovations. Moreover, it's extended with larger locations and dull looting. AI's stupid if medium difficulty's chosen. The whole graphics's incrediable, especially animations. A lot of time was spent on little things. Despite all these problems, I liked the game on the whole. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. As someone who enjoyed the first Last Of Us game I was really looking to playing this sequel and even went out of my way to avoid all the spoilers for it and after playing the game all the way through I can say that in terms of the graphics and the gameplay this game does well at that but the story of this is nowhere near as good as the first game. The moment Joel gets killed off by Abby that right there was enough for me to hate this character and nothing they could do was ever going to change my mind on her and playing as the character for 10 hours after that happened in a desperate bid to make people care for this character did not work on me at all there was nothing redeemable about this character or her friends that all ended getting killed which they deserved because of what they did in the first place and the ending left a sour taste in my mouth, they could have at least given the players the choice to decide if they should let Abby live or die but we never got that which in the end left Ellie with nothing at the end of it all.

So this is by no means a 10 out of 10 game the gameplay and graphics was the only good things about this sequel but the story to me was a huge letdown.

The rope mechanics. Just using rope in this game feels like...well it feels real. Flexible materials in games are usually very fake looking. But here, it's much more convincing. For instance it needs to be bunched up before you can throw it, and the way it wraps around objects is nothing I've seen in gaming before. (you can use google to confirm this for yourself)

The guitar. My God, the guitar. People are actually playing entire songs on it. (Again, you can google to confirm this) I'm no good at instruments but it pulls me back to when I was a kid, trying guitar lessons, It's a great feeling and it makes for a very good break in the action, helping with the pacing of the game.

As for the story, that's what has some people really riled up. It's true that some people won't like the direction the story takes. However that does not make it bad. Play for yourself and decide for yourself, because everything else about this game is indisputably phenomenal. Don't let the salty boys convince you into missing out on this extremely well made game.

The graphics and gameplay is a 10/10 for me, while the story is a 7/10. To me the story starts of as 5/10, then it gets to a 7/10 and as we play as Abby it starts of as 6/10 and after some time the rest is 10/10. My main problem as I pointed out earlier was the pacing. It felt chaotic some times and I didn’t always feel what the scenes wanted me to feel. I personally loved Abby as a character. She had so many flaws (in a good way) and seeing her friends telling her that she was a piece of sh*t, and that her actions resulted in her losing almost everything and being tortured for months, I love that sh*t. I loved seeing her trying to get better and I loved seeing her grow as a person. Ellie to me was kinda boring at the start, but her story got better. Especially the last part, that sh*t was just greatness! Overall I understand why people didn’t like it, but I still enjoyed it and I hope the game will get the praise and respect it deserves for doing something bold as it did. As I said gameplay and graphics 10/10 and story 7/10. Expand

I'm really impressed with the amount of stupid, Crybabies or homophobic people in the reviews of this game, first of all, END the game before commenting on it, do not cry at the beginning, second, those who criticize the game only for the relationship between Ellie and Dina, if Dina was a man no one would say anything, is it such a problem that she is a woman instead of a man? seriously is there a jerk complaining about ellie and dina doing it in the beginning. The game has an impressive playability and an impressive story, it deserves a lot more than a 5.6 given by crybabies, and I'm sure that at least 40% of the bad reviews are people who really passed the game and didn't like the story , the rest are crybabies and homophobic people, and for those who think that the game wants to make you think that ELLIE is the bad one, what it tells you when you use Abby is "Abby had a bad time too" no "Ellie is the bad one" and yes , you are left with the desire to murder Abby, but what happens in the end is not that ellie considers that revenge is wrong, what happens is that ellie calms her trauma of losing his patern figure, and also, in my opinion, Abby gets also his deserved , it would have been great to kill her but to stab her with a knife 3 times, fill her with bruises and fill a half of his lungs with water AND also she was malnourished, is close enough to her death, the game is very good and recommended, the thing is to understand the game and story, don't be ignorant because a characters death or a gay relationship, 10/10 Expand

First off, I’d like to clear the air:

    1. It is - at the end of the day - just a game. A fictional story with fictional people, who are fighting dam zombies for God’s sake. No one should seriously consider this as a substitute for legitimate social commentary and/or academic work. I am confident most human beings who play this game will not finish it - merely chuckle, call it too depressing/sad/unrealistic/insert adjective - and move on with their life. The game will NOT move the the field forward, and will be forgotten QUICKLY. Inspiration does not equal reality. Thus no one - devs or fans - should get anymore riled up. Keep the peace. The devs are mostly decent people, as are most fans. The following review is of course negative, but I have taken care to ensure my criticism is as impersonal as possible.

    2. Its “divisiveness” seems to be mostly a lie, or at least exaggerated. The creators clearly did damage control by saying the game was created this way - when in reality, its problems just came to surface.

    3. The game itself is not too bad - perhaps a middling shootfest at best - but the major problems are the thematic components. The often quoted cycle of revenge leading to hard won forgiveness isn’t explored accurate to reality, but doesn’t want to be melodramatic either - leading one to question whether two different perspectives made this game. Either way, it’s overwhelmingly inaccurate, yet ineffectively melodramatic storyline fails on both execution strategies.

However, the real reason I am penalizing it harshly is because it reinforces a cycle of nihilistic pessimism found in today’s media. To even state this game is trying to “discuss” or “bring up” issues is a clear misrepresentation of the truth - it has a certain perspective on life that it poorly defends. As anyone who works in social work knows (I have, for multiple years) - this is about the worst thing to put out to the public. Thus, in the interest of protecting the mentally fragile - I strongly advise this game to be censored, significant sequences to be cut, or scrapped altogether. I repeat - MEDIA THAT MIGHT CAUSE MENTAL HEALTH PROBLEMS IN PEOPLE DUE TO ITS POOR UNDERSTANDING OF SOCIAL ISSUES is not worthy of being sold. Those at-risk people will not see the game for what it is - an Americanized, ego-centric, woefully inaccurate glamorizing of grief - they might actually associate some parts to their worldview. This is categorically unethical.

I apologize if the review seems harsh, but you can’t just make games carelessly - some thought has to be put into your audience. Artistry requires attention, and attention of people is lost when trust between creator and consumer is breached.

Regardless, remember none of this is that deep. I hope whoever reads this - fan, hater, or neutral - hope you have a great rest of day and a great life ahead.

Part 2 greatly improves on gameplay, graphics and fully embraces the horror aspect. The infected are terrifying this time around. The art direction and soundtrack are incredible and the performances of the actors are amazing. This is gameplay wise the best thing I've ever played because of the amazing AI and combat mechanics. The shootouts are adrenaline fueled thrill rides that completely floored me.

However, I completely understand why someone wouldn't like the story. Throughout the experience there were moments that made me very uncomfortable. Think about breaking bad and the good seasons of game of thrones only this time around it is you that has to do these harrowing story twists.

Sometimes Naughty Dog's ambition exceeds their capability. There are some story moments that feel cramped in and are a little underdeveloped.

Still, I love the direction of the story as a whole and how thematically everything is mirrored. All characters have a distinct personality and I feel like I know more about the smaller side characters in this game than some stereotypical video game protagonist like Nathan Drake or that lady from Control.

My biggest complaint with this game is how the story is non-linear structured. I completely understand from a story tellers perspective that you want to pull the rug under from someone and create some variety with flashbacks, but this really hurts replay ability for me. I still have to go through these sections that don't really have gameplay in them every time I start up a NG+.

It would be really cool to see an update that allows you to experience the story in a linear way in NG+:
    (SPOILERS)
You start out as Abby in the park, leading to the events that Joel narrates in the start of the regular game, you play all the flashback scenes in linear order and the Jackson parts stay exactly the same but in Seattle you would continuously flip back and forth between Ellie and Abby without those flashbacks hurting the pacing in the middle of the game.
    (END OF SPOILERS)

I feel like if this was implemented I would have called it a masterpiece, but it's still amazing and might be the most memorable AAA game I have experienced.

The Last of Us 2 had good moments (I loved the museum part so much), the game has great action. The environments, the mood in the game and a lot in the game are fantastic. Never saw a Playstation game looking that good. But TLOU is about the story, the bound between Ellie and Joe. And this game, takes that all from us. So much felt forced, implausible, not needed and not interesting at all. Some characters are so annoying and boring, the story telling is bad and the pacing is very confusing and distracting. I totally understand everybody hating this game. I also understand people liking this game. So for me it looks and plays too good for a zero. But so much is done so bad too, that it is never ever a 10/10. And because the important part (story) is badly done, I give it a 4/10.

I have given 1 rating and that's being generous. The story is just dumb and doesn't make much sense after TLOU1's amazing story. The graphics and animations are good but not Excellent or Defiying. Overall if the story wasn't so stretched it could have been better. Most likely this game needed a much better narrative.

I feel so sad when completing the game, just want at least another 10 hours to watch the beautiful story. TLoU2 is so far the most attractive game to me, I simply love every part of it. The plot, characters, graphics, music, the fighting system... I love Ellie so much and especially the love story between Dina and her. It’s so hard to hate Abby after the game forced me to put in her shoes.

I hope everyone at Naughty Dog knows this, but from the audience who’s opinion is worth a damn, good job on an outstanding game. And to be fair, it’s not perfect; they overdid it with the gender/sexual orientation a bit IMO and I can understand if you have disagreements on the story, it’s length, whatever. That doesn’t mean “Oh well, now I’m rating it a 2.” TLDR: If you’re a functioning adult who enjoys a good story, give this game a shot. I was just angry and terribly sad with the early death of Joel, really wish we could have seen more of him before he go. But, I think that's exactly the point of the whole experience. He's out so quickly that you, along Ellie, is mourning him pretty much at the same time, through the entire game. Losing someone is never easy, it's never the right time either. In games, they usually do death that feels like the circle is, or almost, complete. Therefore, you feel less **** about it, or you are left with a nostalgic feeling. But like I said, in real life, it's never the right time, and that's exactly what The Last of Us made me feel about Joel's death. A real death, too soon, plainly painful to think about, like they truly do in real life.
I recommend strongly. It's an amazing game. *Excuse my poor English*

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Okay. I had to take some time, to think about why I am so mad at this game and i wanted to write a review, as well, as i LOVED the first game. So let's talk about all the important (in my eyes) points:

    1. To much plot convinience and plot armor: Ppl show up at the perfect time to safe characters. Like Joel saving Abby, Dina Elli (multiple times), Lev Abby and so on and so on.

    2. Pacing: The pacing was **** We got 6 storys in one, basically. 2 Backstories, 2 Flashbackstories & Prologue and Epilog.

    3. Hypocrisy: LGBTQ Characters were implemented, which is totally fine, but they didn't get the meaning behind it. Perfect Example is when Lev gets called Lilly and then asks Abby if she wanted to ask questions, only to say that she/he would rather not talk about it. Like wtf. It's a major point for Lev and why their story arc is even happening. But no one really ever talks about why their sexuality is a cruicial point. Same goes for showing Sex between Owen and Abby, but cutting out Dinas and Ellies. Showing Heterosex but not Sex between two young women? Hipocrisy at its best.

    4. The destruction of Characters.

    a) Young Ellie was brave, witty and overall just super lovable. Grown up Elli got shredded to angry and lesbian. Again, i don't hate on her sexuality, we've been confronted with homosexuality in the first Part - Bill. I hate the fact that this is literally her only character trait in this game. But we covered that in 3.

    b) Joel & Tommy. Joel was fierce, caring only for a few and very cautious. He dropped a neighborhood family a few hours into the pandemy and now randomly safes a young women from a horde of infected? To walk to their hideout, where armed ppl where with military vehicles and tells them his name straight up? And Tommy even INVITING those strangers to stack up at their village? No. Tommy is even worse, as he lives to get his character completely shredded. He went through 3 stages of Revenge: First, refusing it, Second, going alone to get it and third, almost FORCING ellie to go hunt Abby AGAIN, because he no longer can? Heck no.

    5. Lying and manipulating.

    a) Lying: Naughty Dog straight up lied to us multiple times. Like we wouldn't have to kill a dog, yet animal brutality was shown multiple times (Ellies Horse, Quicktime event where you can't even decide AGAINST killing abbys Dog, etc.) + the Trailer of 2019, where they edited Joels Model to trick us into thinking they'd go on a journey together. You can't tell me, in a 3 year production of the game, that half a year of release they completely changed the story (which would have been needed, cause the point joel showed up was far into the actual game). Just disgusting and one of the reasons that i and probably many others bought the game.

    b) Manipulation: Showing how animal loving Abby is in multiple occasions is just the cheapest trick, to get sympathy from the viewers/gamers and overall trying hard to display her as a "good" character through saving kids. Abby is displayed as a WLF Soldier and those kill the Scars. She never gave a second thought about killing ppl (Like killing joel, who just safed her live, shooting Jesse, Killing pregnant Dina, etc) but she does not kill those kids, cause... plot?
Also: Telling a double Revenge story, to finally say "Revenge is bad" is like raping a Person to say "Rape is bad"

    6. Gameplay. Hasn't really changed from Part 1. Which WOULD be fine, if it was still a well told Story (what made Part 1 better, together with its much faster pacing). In this game we are confronted with hordes of enemies to stretch a game already too long even more. Gets repeatitive super fast.

    7. Soundtrack and Visuals: Those are on point, can't argue there. But eyecandy is not going to make up for the story and it's characters.

Conclusion: The last of us 2 has basically a similar problem for me as Metal Gear solid Phantom Pain: It's a good game (or great game in MGSPPs Case), but a really ****ty Last of Us.

She validates segments of the population who've been told to hide who they are. She's extremely realistic within that population. As Ashley Johnson said, all the tomboys and misfits can sit at my table. I also loved her relationship with Dina. I didn't want to play Abby at all, so when I reached a point of sympathy and even liking for her, I knew Naughty Dog had done their job. I also like how it set up an obvious opening for part 3 at the end. Gameplay was fun. There were some improvements in weapons and stealth tactics from the first game. Lying prone and crawling were cool. I love stealth, and this game is excellent for that. To all those I keep reading "I'm not a homophobe but" just remember that "but" negates what came before it. I wouldn't have considered you to be homophobes if you weren't constantly saying you aren't. I believe that many have their balance challenged by two women who don't need men to survive, which is also a huge part of the game's strength. Stop with the online bullying. I cannot wait for 3 and for the HBO series. Expand

Sound and visuals play a very important role in transmitting fear, suspense and the feeling that something is about to happen. All this added to the beautiful landscapes that are also in charge of transmitting calm and hope to the player.

The story is a subjective element. Although there are narrative themes that could be improved on, I think, no matter what happens, you'll enjoy the game.

I can assure you that it's an experience you have to try, beyond the criticism you may read, it's a game worth giving a chance to.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. THE LAST OF US. The Best game ever made. like RDR And Now RDR2. After 7 years Naughty Dog has Provided the Sequel to the first game. Man, What should I say about this game ? Firstly The visuals are Top-Notch, Story is not what we have assumed or excepted. Killing Joel in the first 2 hours of Game is Stupid and the way they kill him is pathetic and out of character. Basically for the shock value Playing with Abby is somehow is okay to some extent but for this long is won't connect.

Similarly, The ending feels Weak. they should give us the option of killing or let Go.
Because after kill lots of people, after losing everybody Ellie will change and forget Abby. That Totally Don't Make sense.

    The overall game is OKAY.

Trash story and gameplay that has barely evovled from the first game and gets boring by the end of it.

The gameplay and the leveldesign are the best that i have ever seen and the attention to detail is massive!
But there are some things that are so unique about it:
One night i texted my friend who also played the game and said: "Abby is a really nice person
if you dont think of what she did to Joel". The next thing i was going to say was: "But i am trying to forgive her..." but at the moment i typed it in I was like: wait a minute, thats exactly what Ellie told Joel at the very end. "I dont think I can ever forgive you for that... but I would like to try". In a video about the game i heard the statement: "You play the game, but even more the game plays with you."
With things like above and many others this statement couldnt be more true.
Not only the in game characters are in a conflict, but the player is too with the characters, their choices and the choices he takes by himself.
It takes some time to understand the game completely, but it is a masterpiece.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. While it has good game play and world building and soundtrack it took away one of gaming history's most beloved characters in an awful way. Joel would never trust people that quickly and also didn't even give them his full name, it feels so awfully rushed. The characters they just throw at are faces aren't even likable characters ,while Dina and Jesse are okay the rest are really just pointless and even though the game tries to make you sympathize with these characters it is still so hard to and most the people that like this game is because either they didn't play the first game or they hated Joel for some reason and the amount of times Ellie and Dina were saved because of their plot armor is insane. Overall bad story telling. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I loved it. The game almost lost me halfway when i had to play as Abby tho. So, i did what i felt was necessary..i stopped playing it for a couple of days after Abby's 1st day. I needed time to let everything sink in a bit. After those couple of days i couldn't wait to get back to the story.

I took my sweet time with this game, and i believe that's the you should play and experience it.
Can't say anything bad about this.
And i don't get the hate it is getting.

This is just another case of spoiled out of touch people who couldn't even write a childrens book, getting angry because the story didn't play out the way they expexted. And if you haven't played the game, don't even bother giving your opinion on this.

And those who went out of their way to read the leaks ( btw, whoever leaked it, you're a **** for doing that), why would rob yourself of a continuation of a story you've been waiting for, for how long.
And then have the nerve to get angry, and boycot this amazing game.

Some people are just out to get upset about anything these days, and it's sad as hell.
And those review bombing it, are sorry as hell. 10 out of 10

The Last of Us Part II is the high point of the PlayStation 4. The plot is controversial, but the game is the incredibly addictive adventure of Ellie, from which it is impossible to pull away from the opening and to the very end.

Not everyone is going to enjoy the motives of The Last of Us Part II. But if you try and manage to accept the subliminal and not so subtle messages as a fact that the world has gone awry and that people have the need to have somewhere or someone to belong to as their own way out, then... You will witness the boundaries of gaming expand. You will witness a true masterpiece.

If you loved the original for its great characters and well-paced story – stay away from this game. However, if you’re aching to sink into the depths of depression, or just want to cut some throats and burn some zombies – Part II will deliver. [Issue#247, p.72]
