Game does a really great job of making you feel for the characters, even at times you don’t really want to. While I wouldn’t say this is the type of story you enjoy it was successful in conveying the complexity of the world and endless tragedy brought by a desire for revenge. Definitely worth playing through till the end but be prepared for an emotionally draining ride.

The graphics are the peak of the generation and whilst the game mechanics haven't changed significantly from the first game (if it ain't broke don't fix it) little additions such as the ability to crawl and hide in long grass, without them being overpowered, are good.

That's the obvious stuff. What everyone came for was an emotional rollercoaster, for which the bar set for the gaming industry in Part I. There has been significant differences of opinion on the direction the studio took the plot, and sadly not all of it polite, but I for one found the story tugged at my emotions just as much if not more than the original. It is darker and more brutal than Part I, with less down time for your emotions to level off, and no game has ever left me as shell shocked upon completion or stayed on my mind for so long. Second time round I found additional moments, and the epilogue may have resonated even more after so long in this world, where I could stay for many more hours.

There was undoubtedly a 'handbrake turn' halfway through which threw me for a while, and it evidently hasn't worked for everyone, but I found that it was a fresh direction and used the gameplay to tell the story more effectively than a couple of cutscenes would have. We see many characters make decisions which may frustrate the player, but in my opinion worked within the character that had been constructed in the game.

Some side characters could have used fleshing out more, along with some other aspects of the lore in general, but at circa thirty hours as it is I can understand the balance that Naughty Dog came to.

Overall, a nigh unbeatable experience that for me has set the bar for the next generation to surpass. The story will not work for all, and I hope that fans can debate in the appropriate manner, but I will take this over a rehashed Part I, predictable trope, or absolute black and white, any day.

Sorry haters, TLOU2 is the best game of the year and even the best art product if considering its storytelling, graphics, and cinematic representation. I don't want to play any other games after this, just want to lead a happy life. But of course, I will touch the console one more time when TLOU3 comes out!

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The last of us part II is a game with good gameplay, but with a story that you need to invest your time in, even after you finished it. The story is okay, but not more. It treats some characters very poorly and that’s very hard, because you started to bond with these characters over the howl first game. It also tells to much, what makes the pacing way to slow. Some characters get to much plot armour while others get killed of in a blink of an eye. Expand

I loved this game. I've never written a review for anything before. Not a yelp review, or an amazon purchase, nothing at all. But this game. My god. I honestly don't know where to begin.

I would be lying if I said that I wasn't disheartened when I found out people were bombing this game on review sites, in some cases before people had a chance to even play the game out in its entirety.

And I suppose that's partly why I'm writing this, but I digress. Let's get into it.

I loved TLOU, and I can honestly say that TLOU2 was even better. Make no mistake; I was pissed when the anti-hero was initially introduced and did the deed that must not be named. I put down my controller after it happened and contemplated whether or not I even wanted to continue playing. But I'm so happy that I did.

Naughty dog takes you on a journey in this game, one in which you start off absolutely despising a character, and initially you feel that this hatred is wholly justifiable. You want them dead, and by Ellie's hands no less. Or maybe you feel like it should never have happened in the first place, that it was just a trite plot point intended to illicit superficial emotions that doesn't make sense or go anywhere. I know I did. I couldn't see how naughty dog could redeem this character, ease the pain of what happened, or in any way provide some kind of resolution that would be satisfying enough. But the story goes on, whether you want it to or not. And boy does naughty dog deliver.

I don't want to spoil anything so i'll try my best to be vague, but the journey you go on with Ellie and her nemesis breaks you. Like, it seriously messes you up. The supporting cast is brilliant, each serving as not just a means to further the plot, but to also change and help develop the main characters' psyches in a way that doesn't feel forced or superfluous. And I appreciated the diversity. I'm not straight, or white, and it was nice to see some representation. I NEED to stress, however, that I never felt like it was heavy handed, or put in the game just to appease the SJW's or whatever. They served a purpose, supporting the main characters growth, allowing them to see that the world isn't black and white (no racial pun intended).

Both of the main characters are instinctive, their decisions often rash and fueled by revenge, and it takes time for them to realize that the path they tread on may not lead them to where they want to go. They make mistakes, they falter, but you root for them - both of them - because you genuinely care for them. You mourn with them when they suffer loss, and you cheer for them when they overcome the most dangerous obstacles. These characters are not coins with only two sides. They're multifaceted, complex characters that yank you from both arms and don't let go until you're emotionally exhausted. Eventually, the lines blur. Who is really in the wrong here? Is there even a "right"?

This is where I throw my hands up in praise for naughty dog. They shove you into a long, painful, beautiful, traumatic, heartstring-pulling journey, and just when you think there can't be any more to it, they shank you and then quickly patch you up for some more. This game was an emotional journey, one I couldn't stop thinking of for weeks after I had finished it. I'm almost ready for a replay, maybe in a few weeks.

Finally, a few words on the cinematography and gameplay: gorgeous and fluid. That's all. Play this game. Keep an open mind. I hope you will enjoy it as much as I did.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The Last of Us part II is a tough game to review since after I beat the game I enjoyed it and would have given the game a 9/10. However, after thinking about the story and analyzing the game's story, I realized how poor the writing was. The gameplay is a 10/10, it's versatile, each combat encounter can be tackled in a different way. The player can stealth kill enemies, go in guns blazing, or mix gunplay with stealth. The sound is fantastic, gun shots sound realistic, the voice acting is top notch and the environment sounds are great like the sound of the currents of a stream or the snow being trampled under the players feet. Another impressive aspect of the game are the graphics. It is impressive that the ps4 can output visuals like in the Last of Us part II. The first Last of Us was known for its excellent story and satisfying ending. The Last of Us part II falls short in the story and because the main selling point of the game was the narrative, I deduct 6 points for the manipulative writing. Neil Druckman clearly wants to manipulate the player into vilifying Ellie and loving Abby. However, Neil and Haley Gross fail in every conceivable way. First of all, in the story Ellie kills a dog when she goes to the aquarium, however, when playing as Abby the player plays with the dog that Ellie kills. The reason ellie hunts Abby is because she kills Joel in the most brutal way, its a cheap shock value move. The problem is Abby just is an irredeemable character, she revels in violence and killing. For example, Abby feels nothing for how she killed Joel or when she goes to hunt Ellie for killing her friends she holds a knife to Dina's neck about to slit her throat when Ellie tells her she is pregnant and Abby responds "good", reveling in the idea of slitting Dina's throat, before Lev stops her from slitting Dina's throat. Ellie, on the other hand, feels remorse when she kills people involved in Joel's death. Ellie beats a woman to death in order to force information out of her, and Ellie feels remorse. Ellie kills two people in the aquarium, one of whom was pregnant, Ellie collapses in remorseful guilt. Even though Neil and Haley wanted players to feel for Abby and shun Ellie, the opposite ends up happening. Players end up feeling for Ellie and hating Abby with a passion. The reason I use the writers names instead of the company, Naughty dog that developed the game is because in the past when Amy Henig was in charge, the writing was excellent and the games were superb. Those games under Amy were 9/10's. Neil Druckman cheapens Naughty Dog's IPs and should not be forgiven for ruining the Last of Us series for good. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I’m incredibly upset with this game. I loved the first one. It was amazing and I definitely recommend to anyone who owns a PS4. I was weary of a sequel as the first one didn’t need it but as each trailer released I got more and more excited. I knew very little about the leaks and after playing it I have to admit it wasn’t probably an honour to have this game spoiled. First off Joel dies in a completely disrespectful way to his character. Then it gets worse. About halfway through the game you play as Joel’s killer and you have to beat the living **** out of Ellie. And then it gets even worse as Ellie lets Abby go after murdering pretty much everyone in Seattle. The only reason I’m not giving this a lower score is because there are some good moments mainly the flashbacks with Ellie and Joel and the gameplay has improved also with some excellent level design but I seriously don’t recommend this game. Maybe if you can find it for under £20 or if it’s free on PS Plus in the future but yeah a bad game that’s very disrespectful to the first. Expand

How this can be rated at 94% blows my mind. It had some interesting moments within the story but it was so slow and seemed to have limited gameplay. All walking around and cinematics. New characters weren't really developed and the game overall was boring. Very disappointed as I eagerly awaited this one.

Last of Us 2 isn't a perfect title in my books, but at least from a narrative perspective it breaks into new territories, creating a coherent experience from the beginning until the end, with one of the best video game endings I've seen so far. It's in the gameplay where the game tends to fall apart, but in it's best moments it shines really bright. It features one of the most compelling enemy AIs I've seen so far, which generates an infinite amount of surprises. In its best moments the games challenges have the complexity of a puzzle which adapts and generates new combat situations on the go. It's the juicy emergent behaviour many designers strive for these days. At the same time TLOU2 features many questionable design decisions which carried over from Naughty Dogs old titles, but didn't age that well with the new game concept. I really dislike the choice of plants in such complex environments to indicate interactable objects. The inventory system doesn't hold up in stressful boss fights and looting is just a pain, especially chaotic environments like a hardware store. Also, the companion AI is really laking in many instances.

It's saddening to see a bland incoherent title like Ghost of Tsushima get a user rating of 9.3, while a novel work like TLOU 2 gets a mediocre user score. I personally don't feel like I can trust user ratings on metacritic anymore. Whether there's a lack of trustworthiness in those reviews or whether I just grew apart from the common taste I can't tell. I certainly hope the former is the case. I also hope that the sales numbers of TLOU2 don't reflect this sentiment, because I really want to see more of this kind of work from you guys at Naughty Dog.

The story is illogical, beginning with a rejected Part 1 plot that was deemed "unrealistic", and continues to try so hard to differentiate itself from tropes that it ends up becoming a mess of trying to "subvert expectations" and have "deep and meaningful" messages and themes. This game is trying to be high art like Part 1 which is primarily why it fails. The Last of Us was a game and story FIRST and high art was simply a byproduct of it being near-perfectly constructed, a game sitting with some of the best of all time like Resident Evil 4, Silent Hill 2, etc. The first title in the series had tons of character, as well as an engrossing overall design. Linear levels pulled you into the strategy and claustrophobia of the world the characters waded through, the feel of the controls matched the character you would play, the narrative made sense, had layers, and the CHARACTERS were complex (without being cluttered) while believable and diverse. The narrative of this title is not only weak in its foundations, but systematically dismantles any possible redeeming factors in favor of appealing to the ideals of the director. The themes are resurrected from the first title, and are much poorer, which in no small part is due to the degradation in character value. Each new character is 1 or 2 traits of a part 1 counterpart, hyperbolized to a fatiguing degree, and solidified as boring by being treated as a person of MODERN society. It fails to embrace the fantastic world crafted by the first game, as well as the stronger design of having only a select few great characters, rather than an ensemble of mediocrity. The pacing of the game is atrocious and borderline mind-numbing as you are bogged down with awful characterization and a bad representation of not only fundamental archetypes, but the very themes the game is trying to push as positive. Representation is not new, the first title had Bill and Ellie, with hints that even David or some of his men were of a different persuasion than someone like Joel or Tess, however since this hardly impacted the story and only flavored the character profiles, representation being the driving motivation for those traits being in the game, the character personalities came first and were respected, with their thoughts and feelings about the world and people around them taking center stage. In part 2, you are constantly reminded of the diversity and importance of the representation being had, and thus the story is given a backseat to agenda. Rather than being character traits that can enhance the interpersonal dialogues between characters of varying purposes, it is now the first hour of the game's dialogue, and several more hours later. This is another issue with Part 2. Where part one enhanced an easy to follow and well-constructed plot with subplots and worldbuilding (think about the notes of Ish), part two instead spends an inordinate amount of time outside of free gameplay, which takes a backseat to what is essentially a walking simulator. While most complain about the LGBTQ or death of Joel, I only resent the lack of proper implementation of both ideas, which becomes even clearer when you remember Bill, Henry, and Sam in part 1,

Overall, The Last of Us Part 2 is the epitome of wasted potential and lazy writing. Subversions exist for the sake of subverting only and carry no true weight, the game is a sloth-race of waiting just to get to a single fantastic gameplay segment (only for it to be over quickly), the characterization is lazy and boring with little development making sense or even remaining consistent to its own canon (Part 1 Ellie had the giraffe scene to show that she could fully recover from the damage caused by David and would never lose hope and positivity, which part 2 ignores to give us the same girl who never got to see the giraffes), and the story is a nonsensical mess with little to offer anyone seeking an improvement over part one. The game is painstakingly mediocre which is awful to come out of such a well-regarded studio in a series that shook the world with the quality of the first title. I believe this game is a waste of money and should only be played by patient people who want a very casual game that fakes emotional weight by using fantastic audio and visual design combined with bad storylines and characterization leading into events that can only really be described as shock-value moments while ignoring the tone and world established in the series in favor of modern personal agenda held by the director. Truly a sad sequel for one of the best games of all time. I hope you found this helpful.

Hopefully, this series follows the structure of the Devil May Cry franchise. A fantastic first game, an awful sequel, and then the third installment being a prequel that surpasses the original title in all ways. Thank you for reading.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The last of us part II

To me the last of us part 2 is a 10 out of 10 first off and the most obvious points the game graphics, the aesthetics, the environment and the smoothness of the game. It is incredible how a game can be so immersive in those aspects.

The second point is game mechanics, of course the last of us won’t have the type of mechanics God of War has, Kratos is a God and Ellie is a simple human that doesn’t even have military training. The game tries to be as realistic and true as it can be. That’s why mechanics couldn’t be as fun as some people expected, the thing is it’s actually fun, violent and exhausting. The improvising factor is outstanding, every time you are in tough situations it’s incredibly rewarding knowing that you could’ve died but somehow didn’t. Responsiveness is not as great as the first game but it was meant for it to be realistic. Finally the most controversial topic is the story. The sequel is a gigantic rollercoaster of emotions. The start is slow but when you get to the 2 hour mark things get really spiced up. The game serves its purpose by making us feel those emotions in a way I’ve never felt or seen before. This game is not fan service at all and I don’t really know what people expected from this universe of tragedy and sadness with little glimpses of happiness. As most of us, I didn’t want many things to happen but the game forces us to do things that are morally dubious and maybe things that are correct we don’t want to do. No character deserves a good ending because they’re not special, they are not superheroes or characters from a love story, they are normal people, just like you and me. Whenever someone says the game is about revenge is wrong, they’re actually not getting the point. This game is about perspective and the path of redemption just as the first game was with Joel, from loosing his daughter and becoming a dubious moral person to becoming a loving and caring person. Abby’s path is a mirror to Joel’s. The fact that they save a kid and travel through America to find a destination is an example of it. I was an Abby hater even before she brutally and disgustingly killed Joel, I even let myself die a couple of times before knowing what was her motivation. Even after I didn’t like her, but as time passed I reflected and understood her, the fact that I didn’t want her to die at the end because, first of all, she spared Ellie’s life twice, seeing her point of view and making me feel empathy is amazing (props to the developers), even after killing the character we loved so much. Abby is not a monster or a completely terrible person. She is just as gray as Joel, or Ellie or any other character we know. Even when she was about to “end it”, you could see her face doubting what she was doing, hearing Ellie scream desperately. I’ve seen many reviews stating that characters are not true to themselves, but you know, 4 years passed and they were living a really normal life without even having to deal with others. Joel for instance became a softer and older guy, he actually didn’t completely trust the WLFs. Tommy lost everything at the end, literally everything (her wife, the possibility of saving Jesse, his brother, his ability to walk, one eye, his complete revenge, and the list goes on) Ellie had her PTSD eating her from the inside, with the impotence of forgiving Joel and not communicating what she felt or thought, these are some reasons that on why she decided to leave her really loving and stable family. At first I couldn’t get why she was giving up on all of that, knowing the consequences, but now I completely understand her and the fact that many of us don’t even know what it’s like to have such a trauma is near impossible to understand why they act in such a way, while developers conducted research, talked to experts and people that suffered from it. For what I can see people felt so empty and had a mix of emotions at the end, and that was the end goal of the game. I don’t think anyone likes it or expects it, but it is what it is. I strongly believe that if a Movie or a TV show or a video game makes you feel such strong emotions that’s what makes it so special and non forgettable. This game made people including myself, start yelling, hating, crying, even being violent. But also made them feel happy and hopeful in some flashbacks and sequences. My recommendation for this game is for you to have an OPEN MIND and don’t expect any fan service, to play it YOURSELF and not base your opinions on another person’s take. MAKE YOUR OWN CONCLUSIONS.

The story can be hard to digest, no question about that, but within the context of the game & the world built in the first game, over the 36 hours it took me to finish it (tried to find all collectables) there was nothing story-wise that felt out of place or forced.

Personally I loved the game, it was visually beautiful, well acted by old & new characters, the music & sound design fantastic and mechanically it felt like an evolution of the original game but added a lot (including hand to hand combat that was greatly improved). And performance was solid throughout.
But reading this you likely just want to know about the story, and why there is so much anger about it. One point of contention, gender and LGBTQ representation; you have a main character, a young woman that is a lesbian (revealed in DLC of the original game) and the main antagonist is also a woman, who has "masculine" physique. So while obviously not all, but some of the hate is certainly based on and directed towards those aspects. Not something that felt at all "heavy handed" to me, but for many that alone was enough. But it was what happened to the 2 characters from the original game, that I think brought out most of the anger. All I can say is, that while it's undeniably difficult to watch some of the scenes that were leaked, within the context of the game and this brutal world, it did not feel poorly written or out of place. In fact, I think the writing in the 2nd game is much more interesting and complex, and compared to the original game that is high praise.

My only real complaint would be the length of the game, about double of the first. But even that in the context of Ellie's journey, the game length itself added to the themes explored. Both games often made me feel very tense during gameplay, with limited resources fights can often seem incredibly tough. But in the 2nd game, even cutscenes were tense as it felt like characters, even main ones could die at any point.
I'll leave you with this, the fact that so many people are still writing 0/10 reviews on metacritic, that it has stirred up this kind of anger, that alone should interest you, as should any work that is polarising. You may not like the game, how it plays, the story etc. but in their campaign against it, those that hate the game & continue to post on any news article, any written work about it, any video, they are inadvertently continuing the conversation. And for me it is a game worth playing and certainly one worth talking about. People complain that games are getting boring, homogeneous. That certainly can't be said of 'The Last of Us Part 2', risks were taken and in my opinion paid off.

The first game is a lot better, why the hell they did that ? This story looks like a spin off, disappointed... Expand

I think this game is amazing. The graphics are phenomenal and the combat has highly improved. This game adds a whole new aspect of a zombie game. The story was super fun even though you didn’t get any backstory on 90% of the characters. I loved it I think people need to realize that there was no way they were going to make a game better than the first one it’s not possible. Overall lovedI think this game is amazing. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. One of the most immersive games I’ve ever played. Everyone complains about the narrative shift but it adds so much to the story. I hated Abby for what she did and yet somehow the game managed to slowly convince me that she’s not a horrific person. I still couldn’t fully forgive her for what happened but that’s the whole concept of Ellie’s story ark! Druckmann said that not all people would be happy with this game. I was one of those people but by the time the credits rolled I was sat there still trying to fathom what sort of experience I had just gone through. I think In this modern era of video games that is something we should be applauding and not scrutinising just because of meaningless arguments over; transgender representations, lesbianism, plot holes and most notably the ending.

At the end of the day naughty dog took a real risk and a lot of people didn’t like it. Myself, I’m not sure if I’m 100% happy but I really really enjoyed playing it and would recommend the experience to others!

Thank you Neil Druckman for making things clear and pushing your own agenda for the higher purpose of the franchise after all this disaffected player couldn't understand the meaning of Part 1. Only a literally genius like you could save such a lame story with character changes influenced by your opionon, regarding the feelings of every minority in such good manners.
Lmao when i read opionions about some gamer dumbasses complaining about part 1. Looses and how to get over it and bla bla. Do they think to own a nobel prize in literature ?!?!
Neil, my man knows what it's all about. It's simple. Play golf with the face of a old men and a good old in and out game. So glad this **** get slaughtered from a strong independet women. Because **** the patriarchy. She likes animals and helped two kids of a minority. That's the only right thing to do, not like this psycho freak crawling around and seeming to be controlled by some force which let kill her innocent people. It's only Abbies right to kill because she do it for wlf. They have reasons.
Her crew was so adorable and it makes me sad we couldn't met for some burritos and do some smalltalk, because that's quality time.
In the end the psycho kid looses it's fingers and isn't capable to roll some faties. I guess, you get what you ****ing deserve gollum. I wish Abbie a nice boat trip. She earns it that much after she was near death dying for the sins of degenerated gamers, who don't understand the concept of newtons law. Believe it ****s. Violence is bad. It's Violence=Violence. Now you can call you woken. The next time i'll see you killing some AI i'll call your parents so they take away your ps4 and you are forced to play outside in a sandbox.
Thanks Neil for the enlightnement in such so dark times. You are the chosen one, sent to change the world we live in to the better.

The Last of Us Part II is the high point of the PlayStation 4. The plot is controversial, but the game is the incredibly addictive adventure of Ellie, from which it is impossible to pull away from the opening and to the very end.

Not everyone is going to enjoy the motives of The Last of Us Part II. But if you try and manage to accept the subliminal and not so subtle messages as a fact that the world has gone awry and that people have the need to have somewhere or someone to belong to as their own way out, then... You will witness the boundaries of gaming expand. You will witness a true masterpiece.

If you loved the original for its great characters and well-paced story – stay away from this game. However, if you’re aching to sink into the depths of depression, or just want to cut some throats and burn some zombies – Part II will deliver. [Issue#247, p.72]
