The truth was that the last thing I expected was for Ellie to turn into a bad person. However, the only thing I can rescue from the game is Abby's character and development, along with the game mechanics that are excellent. The Last of us 2, is FANTASTIC. Naughty Dog has definitely defined how to make a game for adults. The narrative takes us out of our comfort zones. The game is technically perfect ... Now, all these years later, the successor makes me realize how talanted these people are. Anybody who played the first game will try this game because of how good the first one was. But not everyone will like the way things turn out. The way they develop the story to question if ellie truly is the good guy reminds us that that everything has consequences and others are affected by your actions.

The first game truly was the greatest game of all time according to me, but the successor is competing at another level in terms of involving player empathy. If you're anything of a game lover, try this game after you've played the first one.

However the core storyline is quite insulting to fans. The fact they tried to hide Abby in the trailers is misleading. Even more misleading is making Joel seem like a major character in trailers only to have him be killed off two hours in a 20+ hour game in a needlessly brutal and distasteful way. ND tried to subvert expectations and be edgy but instead alienated fans of the game by destroying two beloved and well developed characters. The story and it’s characters failed to grow and develop. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I was introduced to The Last of Us after the remastered release on the PS4 and it changed my gaming preferences to this day. When I completed that game I knew it was amazing, and felt the same way about the creative team at Naughty Dog. From there I went into the Uncharted series, and again, each title was a home run right up until the recent end, which left everyone feeling great.

Now I get the fact that TLOU is set in a much darker world, and that "happy endings" isn't what it is all about. As a big fan of The Walking Dead (which clearly Neil is as well based on how he stole from them) I get that sometimes, in order to keep it "real" we have to lose some of our favorites, however in this case it should have been Naughty Dogs team that had their heads on pikes for the decisions they came up with, that have alienated a huge part of their fan base.

They can try to twist the facts to meet their narrative all they like, but at the end of the day they completely **** the bed with this one. SPOILER WARNING

Killing Joel is essentially killing Daryl Dixon or Rick Grimes; you just don't do it. If you are going to, you had better do it right and for a reason that moves the story. When it comes to beloved characters like these, there has to be a level of respect shown as well. Naughty Dog did not do anything to justify Joel's death and at the end of the day it was more for shock value which, thanks to the spoilers, had none.

There are so many moments in the game where it can't get out of its own way that it would take too line to list them all. One of the biggest though was when we are playing as Abby. We have to get to a hospital to get meds to save a patient and after an hour long mission, we are successful, only to see the patient killed off in the next scene. WTF?!?! Why did you waste my time with that STUPID time consuming journey for absolutely NOTHING? Now you can argue that she used her last gasp to save Abby but still and all, that was a huge waste of time.

Not to be outdone, that leads us to the ending. Ellie, who for over 20 hours has been hunting Abby to avenge Joel, has Abby submerged under water, and as Abby is about to be drowned, Ellie lets her go instead. WHAT?!?!?!

Naughty Dog had my blind faith and trust due to their past track record; that is all gone now. This abomination should have been aborted and I'm surprised the box doesn't have a rainbow flag on it. I couldn't care less about their being gay characters in the game, but the idea that you are trying to argue for LGBTQ equality in the post apocalypse, where murder is legal in the absence of law enforcement, is hilariously bad!

"It can't be for nothing..." and yet, in the end, it all was.

The evolution of graphics and new elements in the gameplay evolve as well as the story, which proves to be beautiful and violent at the same time, with extremely well-built characters, with well-defined personalities, which makes them unique. The photography direction work is clever when using smooth travellings almost uncut during their cutscenes which make them perfectly fluid, making it impossible to discern when the gameplay ends and the cutscene begins. The art direction of the game is impeccable. Each scene in the game looks like a painting thanks to the wonderful and colorful scenarios that, even in times of urgency, it is impossible not to recognize the wonder of the game world, even in a dystopian setting with a dazzling mix between nature and man. The subtle and striking soundtrack also has a beautiful and important role, as it marks the moments of action and calm in the narrative in a cautious and delicate way. The innovation of some features such as dodge, passwords for safes, skill tree and verticality in the gameplay bring a sense of evolution for both the game creators and the players, which gives more authenticity to the game and emerges the player even more in the world that it is inserted. The story shows in an elegant and magnificent way the consequences of how a simple action can have, the price that hasty decisions charge and how the vision of hero and villain are abstract and depend only on the point of view, all thanks to very well fitted plot twists and explained that it keeps the curiosity and mystery of the story until its end. By inserting the LGBT universe in the story, the narrative gains even more value when dealing with such a current and important theme in a delicate and adorable way. This game is a masterpiece of the games and will certainly mark the end of a console generation as the best game of the decade, just like its predecessor, which thanks to the super dedicated and attentive team from Naughty Dog and the fabulous Neil Druckmann, is an amazing, incredible, wonderful, charming and above all, exciting game. When I had to fight, I enjoyed the combat; however, combat was sufficiently messy and resource-depleting to incentivize a stealthy approach.

The story is excellent. I don't want to spoil too much, so I'll just say that this game knows how to make you feel the way it wants you to feel. The score, environment, cinematography, and script work in tandem to give the main characters compelling emotional lives. However, some have criticized the lack of choice in certain key moments of the game. Indeed, their were several moments where I had to accomplish a goal of the main character that I really didn't want to go through with. While challenging and fun, on an emotional level these moments were almost painful. But I think that was the point. At the end of TLoU1, Joel didn't give Ellie a choice. So Ellie doesn't give us a choice. She alienates the player as she loses what she loves. Like everyone else in the game, we are powerless to stop Ellie. We can only watch the tragedy unfold and hope she finds the strength to forgive.

It deserves a 10, dont listen to people saying that it is bad, most of them didn't even play the game and just review bombed it, the gameplay is a 10/10 better than the first and the story is something you will enjoy if you look at it realistically, not as a fantasy, the story is just amazing and totally recommend it.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I feel obligated to say that this game is supposed to be divisive. Do not base your opinion about this game on my review, Try it for yourself. It could work for you, but it sadly didn't for me.

I wanted to love this so badly. I avoided all spoilers and had a fair amount of optimism going into it. I'm 100% sure that the trailers were just as bad as the spoilers, because the spoilers are a large part of what ruined my experience. Most of what I'll discuss is to do with the story.

Firstly, Abby. The core idea of TLOU is survival. You fight your way through and survive because you care about the characters, but I hated Abby for obvious reasons. Making a character do something we will hate for then having them redeem themselves to you (the player) makes it hard to actually like them. Had they made us like Abby and become attached to her before she did the unspeakable, it would've made it possible for us to forgive her and want her to survive, despite it being possible it still would've been improbable. Replacing the protagonist with his killer sucks. I didn't care about her or her friends, and I didn’t try to care for them in the 2nd part of the game since I had already known that they would die. While playing as Abby I wanted to run to clickers and let them bite me, which, again, destroys the survival aspect. I hoped that in every cutscene she would die, but even THAT was ruined because of the order they told the story in.

Instead, they make us play through **** that is clearly trying to humanize her and justify her actions, whether it be her flashbacks or her "compassionate" story with Lev which is just a rip off of Joel and Ellie. The justification for her actions were valid, but at the end of the day pointless because you do not care about who her actions were attempting to avenge, and you actually would be inclined to root against who she is trying to avenge (her father, whom Joel killed, and mankind, who were ripped off a cure) because saving those would've cost Ellie's life. ND even tried to make us sympathize for Abby by having her lose those around her, however, thats just the revenge we've been wanting. At the end I'm just confused about her because there isn't any point in killing her or letting her live.

Secondly, side characters. Having SO MANY characters that are just there to earn our sympathy rather than be actual characters, then killing almost all of them is so dumb. It makes us so emotionally numb to loss because so many of them die, that at some point I had stopped caring when a character died.

Thirdly, Joel and Ellie. The order that their scenes appear, as well as the number of hours between each one made it feel more like a side story. This somewhat undermined their importance. However, they are just too powerful and enjoyable to be called a waste.

Fourthly, the trailers set up a game that was completely different and seemed like it was REALLY gonna focus on the downfall of Joel and Ellie’s relationship, but just completely hit a 180. I’m certain that their intention was to have the trailers make it seem like Dina was the one that was going to die.

Lastly, and this is the most important: The storyline is pointless. The only difference between the beginning of the game and the end is dead bodies. Thats it, and, as aforementioned, that wasn't even meaningful because there were so many deaths. The only meaningful things that happened were the progress in Ellie and Dina, and Lev and Abby's relationship, but even the latter is just some rip off of Joel and Ellie that I don't really want to see play-out, and will not be buying the DLC or spin-off they will probably make about those two.

However, I can’t die how empty I felt at the end of the game, despite not caring about 65%(?) of the characters. I think that’s all thanks to just how greatly developed Joel was as a character, along with his relationship with Ellie. Neither Joel nor his relationship with Ellie were perfect, but were both very strong. Its because the way I feel

All in all a pointless experience with GOOD repetitive gameplay, GREAT graphics, and a GREAT soundtrack that is WILDLY underused imo. Multiple instances where I thought I'd hear a guitar riff but was met with silence instead.

Gamer friends, I don't understand the hatred that this game has suffered, the developers have worked hard on this work. The story is the main asset of the game along with the art direction. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I enjoy the first two thirds of the game. Although a lot of people are upset by Joel’s death, it does make for a good story arch for Ellie. The combat and ambience was pretty good during the journey in Seattle. It goes down hill once Abby confronts Ellie in the theatre, and we’re jolted into some eight hours of Abby’s backstory. It is necessary to understand that her father was a firefly, but it that portion of the game should’ve ended there. Abby’s story would make for a good DLC, similar to Ellie’s Left Behind DLC, but it wasn’t enjoyable because of it’s placement in the main story. I also feel there was nothing that stood out about Santa Barbra. Their big showdown could’ve, and probably should’ve happened in Seattle. Besides changing the scene a little and briefly introducing a new faction, the Santa Barbra sequence just a shorter repeat of Seattle. I found the ending especially horrendous. It addresses nothing in regards to Ellie’s broken relationship with Dina and JJ, how Tommy might react to Ellie’s sign of mercy, or just generally how Jackson was changed by everything. It seems the theme was generally that you should always be aware of how your decisions affect those around you, but that idea is tossed out the door in the final scene. It seems the game was meant to end in Seattle, but the devs felt the game was short, so they threw extra needless fluff in to pad runtime. A decision that drastically lowered the art and potential the game had. I really wanted to like this game, I even have the Firefly insignia tattooed to my forearm, but everything after the initial confrontation between Ellie and Abby, the game went downhill. Expand

If you dont get why Abby did the what she did, and the same for Ellie, you probably fit in the category of people who thinks Joel is a hero and Abby is the bad guy.
There are no good guys at all, people die for nothing, people seek for vengeance, they only try to protect their own and those who they love.
So, this is a game for mature people, definitely. The violence is extremely graphic, the tension around is always high and I love how the game shows us a different perspective from the first game.
It is heartbreaking watching the conversation between Ellie and Joel the night before he died.
The same way it is heartbreaking to see that killing Joel only brought more killing to Abbys life.
This is the The Last of Us Part II goal: show you how things can look different, depending on which side you are, depending on what you believe, depending on what made you since the apocalypse began.
The goal is to be heartbreaking, in every way, for everyone. Because this is the world of The Last of Us.
And I dont even need to start to talk about graphics, sound effects, fights, cities, the whole thing.
I have waited 7 eyers for this game and it was worth it.
It is amazing to see how a company like Naughty Dog can take storylines and the whole videogame experience to places that most entertainement products could never achieve.
Praying for The Last of Us Part III to the next generation of consoles. Or anything from Naughty Dog, the do not fail.

People claim to want 3-dimensional characters--but if that's the case, we have to accept 3-dimensional narratives as well. They claim to want games with adult stories, that go in unexpected directions. I thought I wanted that as well, but TLOU Part II forced me to reckon with that. I realized a part of me expected redemption, almost required it, and I didn't want to pay for it. Not really pay.

Well, here it is: an adult story, with flawed characters, that takes the game and genre in an unexpected direction, that forces you to think and reckon with your actions. A game that isn't "fun" in its climactic boss battles. A game with characters make choices that we understand are wrong, and suffer consequences that are in hindsight inevitable. This is disruptive, and depressing, and unique in the entirety of games. It will be talked about, and argued about, and sets the template for all "dark" games, anti-heroes, and revenge stories to follow.

It get’s better and better throughout playing and it has one of the most intense endscenes of all gaming for me. Music absolutely gorgeous and much darker than the first one. Fyi Mac Quayle from “Mr Robot” worked on the score too along with Gustavo. This sequel is much more creative than the first one in terms of gameplay. The fact alone, that enemies are crying for their shot friends is just terrifying to look at. Dog’s are crying too if you shoot their owner btw.. The only issue that I have with this game are some long passages throughout playing the second half of the game.

No wonder some (many) players have had mixed feelings to put it mildly about this game. This sole fact demonstrates that the game hit right we’re it was aiming.
So yes, the game is beautiful, DA is splendid (kudo to the soundtrack), the acting is without a doubt the best seen in any game so far, the gameplay (e.g. combat) has been notably improved since Part I and the storytelling remains strong.
There are also some lengthy parts and several repetitive mechanics that might bother you sometimes. Not all characters are as charismatics as you d hope, but again, neither are we...
In addition the game (elegantly) tackles sensitive societal topics that will drive some people back, and makes you wonder.
I was left in awe several times, and at the end, of course. I felt like I have never been closer to play an (exceptional) movie.
In short, the last of us Part II hit right in the feels. Are you willing to handle it, that for you to answer. Will you enjoy it, or be glad you went on this journey, only playing it will tell.
In terms of video game experience, TLOU2 will share with FFVII, OoT, MGS, HL2, TLOU1, MGSV, BotW the mighty shelf of titles that made video games and players grow.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Graphics, game play and acting are amazing, I think the game suffers from an inconsistency between the promise and the pay off. I took the promise as revenge, but they attempt to substitute the payoff but don't stick the landing.

I believe they attempted to make me want a forgiveness payoff by showing me the costs of revenge, but while I came to care about Abby, I never cared enough about her or her friends to compare to Ellie/Tommy's satisfaction of taking revenge. Take Mel, who I found pretty unlikable in “the other person” role to Abby (who is also “the other person” so there are no winners) and didn't have much of a personality. I felt bad when she died because she was pregnant, not because I liked her. I became more, not less, okay with it during Abby’s story, since I liked her less as I got to know her. I feel like the game wanted me to not want anyone to die but I only cared about Ellie’s friends, Lev and Yara.

I feel like the forgiveness pay off didn’t stick since they didn’t tease it throughout the story. To me, it doesn’t fit Ellie’s character arc to let Abby go, even if they have players frustrated approval by making us sufficiently depressed by the end fight and presented Abby as having suffered enough. Particularly since the Joel flashback didn’t coach against revenge, just showed that Ellie was ready to forgive Joel. Forgiving Joel doesn’t necessarily impact Ellie and Abby’s story. If anything, it should piss Ellie’s character off more since she never got to rebuild with Joel and rarely forgives.

I feel like they criminally underutilized Joel and gave him a poor death that made Abby irredeemable in the players eyes. I had nowhere to put how much I hated that Joel was dead, except to point that at Abby. That then makes it unsatisfying to end up caring about Abby since you know you don’t want to, particularly since not caring would make like 15 hours of gameplay boring and frustrating. I feel like they could’ve made it grey by having something like Joel saving Abby when she’s coming to kill him, and he gets bitten in the process. Abby then not wanting to kill Joel since he saved her. Then Abby or Ellie (for maximum depressive effect) kill Joel at his request. Then Tommy and Ellie get blinded by rage at Abby for creating the situation and have to process Joel's death and unintentional sacrifice through the story. At least that way there would be some decent reason that he was dead and that killing Abby would negate Joel’s sacrifice. It also wouldn't make the player want to hate Abby. Could even have them make up and work together in a climax against Wolves, Scars and Infected all fighting at once. That might’ve delivered players the forgiveness substitution and capitalized on it for an awesome final battle.

In my opinion, the general story stumbles at the start, with Joel's death lacking meaning or build up, and I was unsatisfied to see that they didn’t build on it with flashbacks. The idea of Ellie’s revenge story is satisfying but they quickly get the threads tangled with Dina’s pregnancy, Jesse being back in the picture, trying to save Tommy, and hunting down the group that killed Joel. It seems like the first act pay off they finally settle for is “life is complicated and gets in the way”. Which is true, but it shouldn’t mean that they don’t satisfy story points. It’s also a lame climax.

I get that the game is supposed to be a difficult story, but tLoU was difficult and satisfying. Likable, if tortured, characters had meaningful relationships and lived their stories in a way that was satisfying because it fit their character. Joel became the father we always wanted him to be as positive payoff, and had the hospital breakout as the consequence. Ellie grew to love and trust someone as positive payoff, and accepts Joel’s lie as the consequence. That’s classic “yes but..” storytelling.

I think tLoU2 suffered with too many weak arcs. What was Jesse’s arc? Seems like he’s just in there to be a decent bloke and then die for dramatic effect. Tommy wants Abby dead, fails, so sends Ellie years later when revenge has cost him his health and marriage. That’s not much of an arc. Ellie was revenge driven, then moves past it, then can't move on, and then seemingly moves on for no reason other than player payoff. Abby grows to understand that Scars are people too (a fight we don’t really have a bone in) then gets tortured for Joel/revenge unrelated reasons.

The game promised me that Abby would pay for Joel’s death. Then didn’t show character progression to realize that promise. Then attempted a payoff substitution without putting in the work with arcs. Just making sense to the player isn’t enough, actions that don't fit a character's arc are unsatisfying. It all seems to contradict the bold choice in tLoU, to be given the ending that the arcs take you to. Kinda feel like they missed why tLoU was so satisfying

Poorly written from the plot holes to the character development.
False advertising to promote their game is just a red false flag. 0/10. WOULD NEVER pay again for a naughty dog game.

The graphics, sound, and voice acting are superb, however, the game falls flat in the story department. The story is bland at best and dreadful at worst. The gameplay is largely the same as the original, so it's fine, just not something incredible.

But the story is like a basic story of revange we saw in to many movies and games
They tried to show us the story of both sides (ellie's and abby's) but at least they could make joel fight a little bit . It's a **** way to die for legendary character lije joel.

The Last of Us Part II is the high point of the PlayStation 4. The plot is controversial, but the game is the incredibly addictive adventure of Ellie, from which it is impossible to pull away from the opening and to the very end.

Not everyone is going to enjoy the motives of The Last of Us Part II. But if you try and manage to accept the subliminal and not so subtle messages as a fact that the world has gone awry and that people have the need to have somewhere or someone to belong to as their own way out, then... You will witness the boundaries of gaming expand. You will witness a true masterpiece.

If you loved the original for its great characters and well-paced story – stay away from this game. However, if you’re aching to sink into the depths of depression, or just want to cut some throats and burn some zombies – Part II will deliver. [Issue#247, p.72]
