The graphics are exquisite. The gameplay is mediocre. (as this type of game does not focus on gameplay anyway. It serves it's purpose). The story....is atrorcious. Why is the story atrocious? And why would anyone judge a game negativelly because of its story? isn't that a subjective element that is beyond the subject of the review process?

Well no. The Last of Us part 2, is a story-driven game. The amazing graphics, and the mediocre gameplay are mere vessels to deliver the main selling point of the game. The story. The story of JOEL and ELLIE. That's what the Last of Us is supposed to be. The story of JOEL and ELLIE. I won't lie to you. I could not finish the game. I bought it, to judge for myself. Played up until the infamous "golf club" scene, took the disc out, and gave my copy up to a friend. So that he can judge for himself. And maybe pass it along, once he too, feels betrayed about how Naughty Dog decided to mislead their fans into this steaming pile of excrement. Stay away if you are one of these people who actually care about the future of gaming. These people must be taught a lesson. Don't buy that game.

You made my love for playing the first TLOU over and over again, trying different things, disappear..... I can't express my disappointment for this game... I'm sorry but I think you should remake the story or don't make a sequel, because I'm sure it will also be a trash game. You changed my perspective of TLOU. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. If LoU part 1 is about hope, survival and tough love, part 2 is about the revenge killings enacted between two protagonists. While there is a sense of redemption throughout part 1, part 2 is about damnation. It essentially begins with Abby who decided to exact justice on Joel for the death of her father. To settle the score, Ellie decided to hunt Abby down. Thus a cycle of violence of death - Ellie kills Abby's friends, Abby kills Ellie's friends and so on. The moral dilemma is about when the two protagonist finally decides to let go. In the theatre fight, Abby becomes her better self after she was persuaded by Lev not to kill Ellie. At the Rattler's beach, Ellie was persuaded in her subconscious by Joel not to kill Abby.

The story largely reflects upon the social dimension of indulging in hatred and the consequences that it engenders. In this regard, the game succeeded beyond expectations because the circumstances were so bleak and desperate that many players actually hated the game. The ending was very poignant and heartbreaking with Ellie losing everything because she failed to let go of her vendetta. We essentially loses the two leads that we have grown to love and care so much.

The premise of the Part 2 storyline seemed improbable because in a world that is so vicious and inured to death, it is not likely that the characters esp. Ellie would have taken on the type of risks and vendetta that they did. The battles are really repetitive and in terms of character development, none of the factions (Jackson, Seraphite, WLF), or even the new infected feel refreshing or inspired.

The storyline seemed to be born out of desperation to cling onto the franchise. As there is actually so much material to explore in the LoU world, it would have been better to focus on entirely new characters and different backgrounds.

I always thought there shouldn't be a sequel. This one lacks respect for the first TLoU as it's far worse than I imagined. My main gripe is with the story, the attempt to try out a sympathy project at the expense of a beloved character, setting off a pointless revenge plot with a bleak theme and tone for the game was uncalled for and unnecessary. The flashbacks were worth the purchase but they angered me more as to what had happened. It also proved to me that TLoU is nothing without the father daughter dynamic that Joel and Ellie shared. As for the sympathy project, I see how they tried to reflect the first TLoU through Abby's story but it felt cheap and the revenge plot was triggered by such forced and lazy writing that I was literally left shocked and in disbelief. Ellie's story in the sequel was hollow like her character with one hundredth of the charm of her prequel self. Abby's story was better and I would've enjoyed it had this been another game. Humans are tribal beings and cannot be expected to feel the same way for every group. The ending was pathetic for not allowing options since a second play through could've made me choose differently even though I doubt it. This sympathy project bites off more than it can chew. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I am a huge Naughty Dog fan, I purchased the collector's edition of this game and looked forward to it for years. I did my best to ignore spoilers, and I was convinced that the hate for this game leading up to its release was just bigots who couldn't handle LGBTQ representation in the game. Sadly, after finishing this game, I can say this game is just not good. I was excited for a transgender character to be in this game, and its one of the most interesting and well done parts of the game. But the game is marketed as the next step in Ellie's journey, and Ellie's part of this game ends up being a confusing mess.

First, I'll mention what I liked about this game:

Gameplay: It doesn't differ much from the first game but it is good, as you'd expect from ND. Stealth is fun and can be rewarding, the world is very detailed and makes exploring fun, at least for a large portion of the game. I will say there could have been something new added here, there are additional weapons, some new things to craft, and a couple new types of enemies. Enemy AI is improved and you can hide in tall grass, but it is very similar to the first game.

Graphics: This game is beautiful. The fact that these graphics were achieved on a PS4 is astounding, it is the most impressive part of this game.

Some story elements were great: The flash back scene where Joel shows Ellie the museum is awesome and reminded me of some of the great moments of the first game. Honestly, the scars vs. wolves was actually interesting, I would have rather just got a game where I played as Lev and got that story than what I was given. If anything, these moments of great story telling make the rest of the game more infuriating, because you can see that there was still the potential for this game to be a masterpiece.

The story: Here is where it all falls apart. First off, I don't hate this game because Joel dies, I don't hate it because you have to play as Abbie. I do think this should have been a new IP or a story in the world of Last of Us separate from Ellie/Joel.
The characters in this story constantly contradict themselves. Dina says she had to come with us, she supports our quest for revenge. Then immediately says "There are a lot of bad guys, does this change anything for you?" Jesse tells us he would have come, he looked up to Joel, these people deserve what they're going to get. Then immediately says "We're attacking their camp just like they did us. They could come back and attack Jackson, does that change anything for you?" This seems like a huge disconnect. If the characters actually think this they wouldn't be here with us, ready to kill people. This just seems like poor writing to ask the player "do you feel bad for what you're doing? You're just as bad as these people." Yes, that is true, I never thought Joel was a good guy, I supported his decision because he saved Ellie out of love. Love and selfishness, and anyone who can imagine themselves in his spot would most likely do the same. What if this was your mother? your sister? your daughter? This is just as bad of writing as the characters yelling out someone's name after you kill their friend. Of course if you kill someone, the other people knew their name. I can't even begin to tell you how little of a **** I give. I am here for revenge. These people can die after watching their friends die. Ellie watched helplessly at Joel's broken and tortured body. While Abby smashes his head in with a golf club, she does not care about these people, and neither do I.
Joel being brutally tortured and murdered is obviously given to us to make us angry and want revenge. And the game obviously wants us to not want that revenge by the end of it, to show us violence is pointless, and we shouldn't have hate in our heart. But if you can tell me that you could watch your father be tortured and murdered in front of you and you wouldn't kill that person, you're pathetic. We finally hunt down one of these people, who calls Joel a **** to our face, and I get to hit square a few times to hit her with a pipe, all the while I just see Ellie's face? I felt more impact torturing someone in GTA or God of War games. I felt let down, i wanted to make this character pay for what she did. Now, following the scene where Ellie is dealing with the weight of torturing this woman, really well done, great acting/scene. But if Ellie was going to turn back from revenge I think this is where it would have happened.
This game drags on forever and it left me feeling like this was Abbie's story, not Ellie's. The end of this game is some of the worst writing I've ever witnessed and we never get revenge. This game tries really hard to pull of what the first game did with its own twists and turns. And it fails every step of the way. This game is not a masterpiece, its a story based game and a 4/10 is a generous score. This game made me question all Sony first party titles in the future, something I didn't think possible.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This is one of the saddest let downs of the century. If I could go back in time, I'd find a way to stop the production of this game. Seriously, the first one had an ending that would've been better alone than making this crap.

The Last of Us is a story driven game at its core. It sucks you in and doesn't let go until the ending and that's why we all screamed for a sequel. You had characters with strong backgrounds that fans loved and were unforgettable.

Well lets start the game off by killing the first character after what? 10-15 mins of gameplay? So much for Ellie and Joel adventures or interaction, or a conclusion to their underlying distrust from Ellie. You grabbed me with the bliss of being BACK into the world with these characters for the first hour. Seriously, who let the intern write the script?! I had a feeling Joel's time was coming after the first game when the sequel was announced. I'm talking about the cautious, morally questionable, bearded joy that fans kept alive in a garage all winter after falling onto a spike.

That character dies because he wasn't cautious enough? WHAT? The guy actually took down a firefly base and saved a girl, carried her out of there against armed men and women, and walked away from it. Being cautious and patient was the reason he made it so far! The death is GRUESOME! I have yet to see a good reaction to this.

It just gets worse. After experiencing the ass beating known as Joel's death, the player must then be forced to play as his killer (a newish character) for 10 hours.... Trust me. I am NOT relating to that character whether their biceps could curl an elephant or they are portraying a minor community in society after THAT. My favorite character was just beat to death in front of me I do NOT like that person. Keep making those biceps bigger you almost had it? The ending.. you try to drive a moral philosophy down the player's throat of revenge vs love, forgiveness and letting go. This is a zombie apocalypse and humans are nasty creatures anyway! Anyone strong enough to make it this far would obviously get revenge first. Switch the events around and make it so that ALL character's actions have consequences (yes including Abby . SURPRISE) and show the flashbacks as happy memories for Ellie only for her to realize that the guitar and those memories are what is important to her, a SURVIVOR now. Oh and please.. Ellie losing her fingers to Abby too because she pursued revenge? This is nothing but a spit in the fans' faces.

I give you your 3-4 points for making a game with good mechanics, graphics, and an immersive semi-open/linear world. But a story based game with a bad story and good mechanics is the same as wrapping filth in gold. (The first game really established the mechanics and atmosphere of the game already, so honestly giving these points is hard enough). There are moments where love and somberness (guitar scene, flashbacks) that made me slightly smile and for that I won't give this game a 0. However, they are easily countered with bad pacing and unnecessarily awkward focused details like Ellie having sex with her girlfriend while Joel is in trouble. Feels just.. out of place. If you want those beliefs to be part of the "norm" then you have to treat them as the norm not go out of your way for them.

Please redo this game or have a DLC or SOMETHING to fix the story. I don't care for politics, moral beliefs, etc I just want to see my favorite characters go through something meaningful. Abby should have to pay for her actions and we should not have to play as her. (Someone getting to know her maybe could work?) More playtime for Joel and Ellie, a resolution to their feelings about the decision in the last game. Give him a death where he goes out with a BANG and make us watch. But in the end, make it mean something with bittersweet memories and whatever else could've been done to drive your point home that pursuing revenge will only cost more.

I feel like I was fooled by the many great trailers, and I honestly don’t understand how Neil Druckmann can sink so low. The characters seem dumb, the plot is just stupid there’s no character development, there is no solution to the problem that started the game, and in the end you just feel lost. But not the cool kind of lost were you think at the game as amazing. Lost as in you feel like there should be more. Overall a complete disappointment. What made the last of us great was it’s intense storyline. The last of us 2 offers nothing like that. And btw I thought it was pretty cool in the last of us 1 DLC (left behind) where you find out Ellie actually likes girls. It was not too much and they made it seem very cool and kind of beautiful. Had a lot of fun with VATS mode, nice to see combat opened up for anyone, especially drunk people. Finished the game, thought about collecting all the artefacts, but chapter select is still broken (cut and paste glitch from the first game) so it's way too much hassle. Finishing the game was about as rewarding as a dropped ice cream.

I did enjoy taking selfies, my favourite was in the middle of a large pile of bodies. They all accidentally ended up there of course because the AI is still partying like it's 2013. Six trillion hours of development time spent on a rope VS me hiding behind a couch next to seven bodies and the guy in the police vest not being able to make the connection....

It's great to see people like me being portrayed in video games. I talk to myself a lot too. In the first game there was usually someone there to talk to, which was just unrealistic. Having large parts of this game being made up of one character on their own chuntering randomly to themselves really brought it home for me.

I think the high point of the game for me was the discovery of the option to auto collect. Suddenly my character was reaching out and realistically grabbing everything as I ran past. It's fantastic how far games have come with their capabilities. Obviously not as far as Paris Games Week 2017, I'm guessing that was footage from the PS5 remaster.

Out of all the PlayStation exclusives I'd say this one made me want to be an XBOX owner the most. Liked the game so much I'll probably buy the main characters collectors edition when it's released.

    1. you have to be brain dead to think that people had issues with lesbians, transgender or male characters dying. those who had this sort of issues are frustrated people that have literally no right to have an opinion in any point of view (not only this game), so they can keep their hate and beliefs to themselves.
i have been a fan of the first the last of us game since the release. i was too poor to get a ps3 so i had to wait to play it when i got my first ps4 (offering an amazing experience as a remastered product). When the last of us 2 came out, i tried my best to stay away from the spoilers and was pretty disappointed with everybody hating the game (for reasons i honestly didn't understand). So dodging any unofficial information as much as possible. In meantime i preordered the game and followed whatever official news i could find, everything getting me more and more hyped! I started praising this game everywhere i could... till the last 5 minutes of gameplay...
as we are living in an era where you don't play videogames just for the sake of doing it (like we did in the past), story plays a huge role in the gaming industry.
so, after playing the first game for like 3 times, i got into the last of us 2 with a pretty huge emotional baggage, hoping to hop into a new adventure with ellie and joel.
unfortunately that was not the case... grabbing the controller for the first 2 hours i fell in love with the world the game had to offer. was sad a bit i did not get to spend that much time with joel but i was ok with it... "its a big game, there's plenty of time...". till there's not...
i don't want to dive that much into the story so i will get here what naughty dog could've done and what i really hated about it.
    1. don't make joel and tommy act out of their character. they made them look STUPID. joel was the most cautious and smart character in game (his brother as well). are you going to tell me that they will go in a house full of strangers and they'll tell them their names in the first 10 seconds of their encounter??? no god damn way! that's trash writing there. how to fix it? make abby save joel's life. then he can be grateful for it and MAYBE, JUST MAYBE i can believe that he can blindly trust her and leave his guard down... or if you're leaving it like that, at least give abby a interior conflict. like "joel saved my life, what if he's not a bad guy??". i was pissed about my favorite character dying, but i could understand the way things were going (or at least i thought i did).
    2. don't push abby down my throat for 10+ hours as a playable character after she murdered joel in that brutal manner. solution to this problem? kill joel later. use those nice flashbacks of ellie and joel at the beginning of the game and put them on the same time with abby's flashbacks (one at a time). this way you create a profound sense of loss for joel but in the same time create empathy for abby. because (and sorry for the language), i couldn't give a single **** about whatever you throw at me about abby after what she done. don't just throw flashbacks everywhere and expect people to understand that abby is human as well. WE KNOW THAT ALREADY NAUGHTY DOG.
    3. don't make me fight ellie with abby. nobody wanted that and people hated abby even more when she found out that dina was pregnant and she said "GOOD!" with a sick smile on her face! you try to humanize her but in the same time its obviously that she's a cold hearted murderer.
the thing i hated the most about the last of us 2 story. THE ENDING. all that propaganda about "revenge is bad" while murdering hundreds of people and having literally all your friends die shows up front how poorly written is this story.
for you as a real life person, put yourself in ellie's shoes with all the emotional, physical, psychical baggage and the ability to get that revenge on the person that killed the closest thing to a father (being forced to watch the entire brutal scene happen). please tell me you'd stay right in front of that person (after killing hundreds of people) and just say "i'm ending this here! leave! revenge is bad!".
the last of us 2 is dark, cruel and brutal. an ending with ellie "finding the light" out of nowhere is literally garbage. solution? make 2 endings and let people chose how they feel about it. (not that hard).
i know that there are people out here thinking that they smart for finding out the whole "secret meaning" of the game.
if the last of us 2 would've been a stand alone game, would've been awesome! being a sequel of the masterpiece the first game was, this game is an offense to everybody that loved the first game

For the entire 10 hours of her story I hated her, no amount of pandering or attempts to make me empathize with her worked. My only feeling for her as a character was seething hatred as I realized she was going to be half of the **** game. The only way I could make the second half fun for myself was by killing Abby in as many forms as I could. Especially when you are FORCED to beat the **** out Ellie. The game looks and plays great, but the soul that existed in the first one clearly died. There was no character development that could match up to the last game. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. It's funny that Metacritic is trying to give this disaster such a high score. I'll admit that graphically and on a technical level, it's gorgeous -- the environments, lighting, models, textures, animations, all stunning and technological advances. However... in the end, those are not what make people fans, what make them love your game and talk about it for years to come with nostalgia. That is not why people loved the first game.

In fact, it's precisely because the first game was *so good* at making you emotionally feel for Joel & Ellie that his sudden, quick and unexplained death early on in TLoU 2 is distasteful to so many. I'm not opposed to emotionally gutwrenching games that make you feel, and this one indeed makes you feel... but not in the good way that you're glad you paid for it.

From the first game, we saw Joel as a flawed father figure doing anything to save Ellie -- it was deeply touching. Then, he's brutally executed in a stupid way by a character we know nothing of and care nothing for, after having saved her life. He did not get a fitting end. But in the same way that Abby is driven to revenge for her father, so does the player feel compelled to avenge Joel -- this is why so many people dislike Abby. We were bonded with those characters from before. And yet the sequel's writers spend the entire time being preachy and moralizing that nobody wins and revenge is bad -- to the point where Ellie never actually gets any finality or closure, she loses everything -- Dina, JJ, Joel and Jesse, her guitar-playing fingers, everything... and is seen walking aimlessly off in the field.

You will get no satisfaction or closure. You will be left wanting, with disappointment and sadness. Ellie doesn't even hug Joel in the final flashback, the last time she saw him, because Ashley Johnson (Ellie voice) didn't want there to be a hug. You won't even be given a sliver of happiness in a memory with him, you just have to be satisfied that Ellie said she'll "try" to forgive him. After hours of slogging through the game as Abby and dealing with her experiences and WLF characters we don't really care much about, all because the writers want to try to make you see that revenge is cyclical and everybody makes the same mistake... that is all you will walk away with.

A whole lot of nothing, and disappointment at what a game this gorgeous could have been. They had years to work on this, on the heels of such a beloved and successful first game -- and snatched defeat from the jaws of victory.

Graphics and mechanics are top notch like the 1st game but not enough to give this game any higher than a 3/10 you had 7 years to give thought of this game and this is what you came up with? Disipointed customer and likely I will never buy a naughty dog game ever again I hope it was worth it Neil

It wasn't written for the same group who made the first one, just, can't be!
This game history make us fells like they cherry-pick social warrior's tweets and then made a narrative of it.
This game is propaganda, not art!

Look, I liked the game up until the middle where I lost interest and started getting stale, the story fails to make me feel invested in the characters, and they definitely try, too much. the beginning feels rushed and I personally feel it could have been done so much better, its really a shame that this game falls short of what it could have been.

I've played the first TLOU at least 10 times and in my opinion it's one of the best games ever made. I have no idea what this second game is, I cannot even recognize it. I can only describe it as horrible, terrible, awful, disgusting and disrespectful.

This is not the game we were waiting for, for 7 years. The graphics in this game is fantastic as expected, and the game-play and combat mechanics were good as it was with the first. The story telling in this game was horrible at best, which is filled with agenda, politics and narratives that have no place in this world that they have created. Being forced to watch beloved charactersThis is not the game we were waiting for, for 7 years. The graphics in this game is fantastic as expected, and the game-play and combat mechanics were good as it was with the first. The story telling in this game was horrible at best, which is filled with agenda, politics and narratives that have no place in this world that they have created. Being forced to watch beloved characters destroyed and then be forced to play as the destroyer for over 10 hours of the game while the creators try to force you to care for this hated character does not work! I personally did not feel any sympathy or anything other than hatred for this new character and just wanted the game-play to be over with. there are also many bugs in this game which at times make this game difficult to play. At the end of the day, a game is suppose to be more than just beautiful graphics. A game is suppose to be fun, and this game it not. People like myself, play games to get away from real world politics and narratives. A game is suppose to be immersive and a pleasure to play, while freeing your mind of all your real world problems. I see no point in a game that does the opposite. Expand

Un juego con buen detalle técnico pero con una narrativa decepcionante, arruinando la primera parte de este título además de personajes que más que generar interés generan enfado y eliminan la sensación de seguir jugando.

the game was not good what we like about the first game was the love we saw from the 2 protagonists here they slaughter what we learn to love , then they try to hard to make us feel something for a terrible character that nobody wants. after a couple hrs i star playing **** you know the name I couldn't continue playing......

Last of Us 2 totally went away from the original story. I know the writers wanted to try something different but the story was awful.

I got half a game cuz you are forced to play half the game as another character then Ellie that I CARE NOTHING ABOUT.
so basically I get half a game.

There's a bit of game on this leftist propaganda... Besides, I'm really hurt by the advertising of this game that leaded is to think Joel would be important at some degree... That manipulation was so awful! I cannot believe something like that could have been approved by someone!
We should thank Anita Sarkeesian for dragging another franchise to ruins

The Last of Us Part II is the high point of the PlayStation 4. The plot is controversial, but the game is the incredibly addictive adventure of Ellie, from which it is impossible to pull away from the opening and to the very end.

Not everyone is going to enjoy the motives of The Last of Us Part II. But if you try and manage to accept the subliminal and not so subtle messages as a fact that the world has gone awry and that people have the need to have somewhere or someone to belong to as their own way out, then... You will witness the boundaries of gaming expand. You will witness a true masterpiece.

If you loved the original for its great characters and well-paced story – stay away from this game. However, if you’re aching to sink into the depths of depression, or just want to cut some throats and burn some zombies – Part II will deliver. [Issue#247, p.72]
