    This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I am sad to say that when you write a masterpiece, there is very little you can do to add to that. This story needed no closure or additional material. But ND think otherwise.

    The writing is dire. Full of plot holes & is very sadistic. Even the characters we are familiar with are reduced to a latter glory of themselves. Joel - who used to be impetuous & take no nonsense is now a withered old man who takes abused from Ellie who is now a spoilt brat who has no morals, ethics, & seldom any intelligence left. She isn't half as likable as Abby who seems to be the better of a poor bunch of brainless girls merely reacting to digs from friends all the time, when they're not stuck in FLASHBACKS for half the game!
    Flashbacks are a result of poor writing falling apart at the seems via logic. Stanley Kubrick once opined "Don't Tell the story.. SHOW the story". Not only do they fail at both, but they are constantly patching it up with amendments in timelines which have no impact to the present story. It is tedious. A frustrating slog through intended checkpoints in order for the ending to make sense.

    It's a shame. Because I think there is no environment in which the people behind the first had any say at all in whether all their work be wiped away with a lesser game that no one wanted. Many Devs raised their voice. The concerns.. ignored.

    This isn't anything to do with sexuality or diversity. I quite like the cast, if they weren't under the strict stipulation of turgid writing. It's GOT Season 7 & 8 all over.    … Expand

    The visuals are absolutely stunning, the snow effects, the footprints, I love it all so much
    I sadly still found myself not wanting to move on in game, the story feels like more of a walking dead shock factor style than what tlou1 gave us, it feels like a cheap slap in the face to the original story

    First of all, I want to point out that my dislike for this game has nothing to do with politics, or the fact the main character is a female and gay. Some of my favorite games include, Tomb Raider, Horizon Zero Dawn , Uncharted: The Lost Legacy which all have female leads. I also really liked The Last Of Us: Left Behind, which is when Ellie was first introduced as being gay.

    On a side note, all the games I just mentioned had very positive user reviews, so the assumption that is being pushed that much of the negative user reviews regarding the The last of us part II are because of the female lead character and people not liking the LGBQT messages, is ridiculous.

    The graphics in this game are amazing. IT's a great way to end the ps4's lifespan before the ps5 comes out graphically. Unfortunately, that is the best thing about the game. The controls seem dated, and not much different than the first game. The core mechanics are almost identical to the first game (which were already kind of outdated back in 2013 but no one really cared because the story was so good), but now it just feels really dated, except for the better animations.

    Without adding spoilers, I will say that I did not enjoy the story for the most part, or the ending. Is this game a zero out of 10? No. But it's nowhere near a 10 out of 10 either.

This is exaggerated further with flip flop characters, and a lack of foreshadow plot points. Example, I see people stating is Joel may have changed. This is bad writing through because there is no display, foreshadow, or dialogue to show that change. This is a fair game, yet diminishes the first game leaving a poor legacy on the franchise.… Expand

    I paid 468 HK dollar for this game and I regret it.

    I understand most of the critics who reviewed this game, they probably don't have to pay the money to get the game, in this case, I think my review is less biased because at least I paid for this game. What makes TLOU special? The story. There are many zombie games, killing games, beautiful games, who bother killing zombies in TLOU?    I paid 468 HK dollar for this game and I regret it.

    What makes TLOU special? The story. There are many zombie games, killing games, beautiful games, who bother killing zombies in TLOU? It's because of the story, so when the story fails, the games fails.

    I think the game director changed his decision over the main story many times during the developing course, and eventually he did not know what he really want or to deliver (bad lesson to give a game director too much power in a studio), I am totally disconnected with the characters, I was forced to play and to connect with characters I don't give a F**K with, the story is not natural, not logical, just nonsense.

    The story telling structure is horrible, rigid, forced and senseless.

    The little trying to make an open world exploration experience feels out of date.

    The game control feels clumsy, the UI design... It sucks when you want to swap your weapon during a fight.

    This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. play 25 hours of a simplistic revenge plot with outdated gameplay only to get your fingers bitten off and not take revenge on the person you wanted to take it on by your own choosing. Also, none of the new relationships matter or last, but the relationship people loved (Joel and Ellie) is killed off within the first ~ 2 hours. He and Ellie also do not act like they did, they just got dumber and make all the mistakes they taught 'to us' not to make in those cases. And the only thing driving the plot forward is bad and illogical decision making. You're also supposed to like the villain who kills Joel because it is a transgender. That's all there is to it. the character has no redeeming features whatsoever, it is a jerk through and through. The visuals are stunning though, the OST is pretty damn good, but the gameplay is virtually the same as that from a 7 year old game and the story reads like fanfiction by a transgender teen. Which I don't mind them writing, and I don't mind them being happy with their identity, but it doesn't magically make a crappy story a good one.

    You can think of it like this: If Abby was a straight man named Adam, the story would be just as dumb. The creators of the game can pretend this is about hatred of some minority groups or whatever, but it's not. They delivered a narrative mess full of plot holes, conveniently stupid characters to allow that plot and the gameplay is just so outdated. The mechanics and the AI should not be this bad in 2020.    … Expand

    After finally getting around to playing this game after years of waiting to basically get it for free from my local Walmart for 9.99$ I was able to experience the game at a discount.

    The game loooks great, has amazing sound & music design & the animations are top notch
    But to keep it short all the characters from the previous game are basically not the same people they were before, & that's fine but you have to write it in a way to make it make sense. Especially the ending, it was out of left field & literally made NO SENSE. so you're just left frustrated & cheated.

    I genuinely don't think the series will ever recover from this, atleast not for the original fan base, Those people who bought the original game & played that game for the story. You will be very upset & disappointed if you play this one.

    For me the first game was perfect & didn't need a sequel. 4/10.

    I have no problem with the gameplay of TLOU 2 being largely unchanged from the first game, I felt like it served it's purpose in the original to help propel the story and the narrative and get the player from point to point. Where I do have a huge problem is when that gameplay leads you from awful narrative point to awful narrative point.     You don't owe Sony or Naughty Dog any of your money or your time just because you liked the first game (I loved it). Save your money. Send a message. Don't be a sheep to a corporation. Half the reason for why this got good “critic” reviews (and I use that word lightly) is because of the triple A production value, the same thing that makes it so that steaming piles of **** still get good reviews. Also it’s incredibly ironic how Far Cry 5 did Christian villains better

    Joel and Tommy are made into idiots, they gave up their names to strangers even though they have never done this and they have major trust issues along with having enemies.
    Ellie goes for revenge and does not get it, We are forced to play as Abby the villain even after she kills the man who saved her life and the beloved Joel.
    The game also beats a pregnant Bi character, Druckman also put himself in the game and his character spits on Joel's dead body.    … Expand

    All the politics aside this game fell flat for me.

    Mechanics and game play were a bit outdated, Voice acting and presentation were good, Story did not line up with the first game, seemed far fetched.

    I expected more from this game since the first one was so awesome. The connection you felt between Joel and Ellie in the first game is not present here.

    Last of Us has always been a game with mediocre gameplay. This game is about story, storytelling, emotions. And the storyline with the murder of the protagonist of the last part at the very beginning is the height of stupidity and an attempt to cause unnecessary emotions.

    That said, can't bring myself to enjoy graphics or gameplay because of the storyline. I tried my best not to be spoiled but i wish I didn't... It would have prepared me for that emotional train wreck that was the death of a beloved character.

    Bad story. Main character is forgotten and thrown away. Forced to play a significant chunk of the game with a stranger that had no redeeming qualities. Narrative is destroyed to appease personal political and morally reprehensible agenda. They also forced "representation" by altering a real life female to make hey less feminine in her computer render.

TLOU joins StarWars, GoT, Ghostbusters 2016 as once great tiles ruined by sequels and subsequent revivals. the story is all over the place, same old revenge plot used a million times, people say the graphics the only good thing about this game but even that is lackluster, TLOU2 is too graphically, dark, gloomy and edgy, compare that to the giraffe scene in The last of us, where the message was "it may be a zombie apocalypse, but we do what we do to survive and find happiness in little things." This game is a chore to play and just when you thought in the end ,you would have the satisfaction of killing the villain to avenge the character that made the original good, you get a "change of heart" trope thrown at you. And what about the 100s of people you killed trying to get to Abby, don't they matter? the message of this game is unclear, but hey you're a bigot transphobe anti-SJW, racist if you don't like this game right?… Expand

    The Story is god awful. Sadly not a joke. 2 hours is all it takes to realize your money was wasted. I've read $1.99 E-Books from Amazon that are less messy, less reliant on 180 degree shock moments with infinitely better structure (Try the Winter Sniper series by David Healey)
    Daytime soap opera like acting, reliance on flashbacks and heavy with nonsensical plot twists.
    Honestly felt like decisions that you have no control over we're designed to actively troll the player? No seriously. It felt like I was being giving the middle finger for enjoying the original game and it's lead characters relationship.
    Voice acting and script show significant drop in quality from the original. Some lines will make you laugh (Not in a good way).
    Multiple forgettable characters with little overall impact bog down a pointlessly bloated mid section.
    Plot requires the main characters to be significantly dumber than their past selves, possibly to make the many horrendously stupid decisions seem more feasible.
    Frame rate dips well below 30 fps occur with moderate levels of action (Launch PS4. Can't speak for PS4 Pro)
    Combat becomes repetitive and boring.
    Some animations look unnatural. Swinging on rope for example, looks goofy and awkward
    Relentlessly bleak. Never felt any great enjoyment in what I was forced into doing which made it a real slog to play. Murdering at this level probably shouldn't be fun, but that is what i play games for. Fun. This was not fun, Maybe you'll love the constant sensationalized brutality if you're 12. But an experienced gamer will tire of Quicktime event violence for violence sake.
    For all of the SJW talk, there appears to be little reason for the LGBTQ community to feel uplifted with their representation here, other than acknowledgement they exist after the Apocalypse.
    Genuinely wasted opportunity to talk objectively about issues that face LGBTQ daily.
    Some set piece action was cool, but there's no where near enough of it. Puzzle sections from the original are virtually non-existent
    Ending is horrendously stupid, unsatisfying and incredibly, manages to render the entire revenge theme pointless.

    Conclusion.

    With any other game, the good found in the Last of Us 2 would probably earn it a 6/10 as visually and presentation wise, it really is quite beautiful. However I have chosen to knock points off as this is not a traditional game in the sense that game play mechanics are more about serving the narrative than being actually fun to play. This means the core impact of this game almost solely relies on the story nailing its beats, investing the player and holding the audience captive through it's admittedly lengthy play time.
    Here it sadly fails. The Narrative uses a mix of ret-cons, deception, borderline emotional blackmail nonsensical twists to tell a schizophrenic story of "revenge" that is honestly boring, cheap and unsatisfying.

    If there is some good to come from this disappointing experience, hopefully it is a deeper focus on the practices of the mainstream gaming media and their ludicrous 10/10 circlejerk concerning this title.    … Expand

    I understand that this game is supposed to NOT be enjoyable but the writing of the story and characters is god-awful. It feels like a fever dream, a crappy fan fiction full of plot holes, decisions meant to be "realistic" but in fact, they were just purely written. Characters do not act the way we saw them in the early game, the time jump does not justify that. The game is too long for a "revenge is bad" story, ESPECIALLY SINCE THE BAD PEOPLE WIN. So revenge ultimately is great, I guess?
    And seriously though, did Abby kill every person named Joel she encountered? That would've made much more sense. His death was so full of **** I can't simply understand how one can come up with a solution like this. Shame because the graphics are the best I have ever seen on PS4, gameplay is mostly okay, slightly better than in the previous game. 2/10.    … Expand
