This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Made an account just specifically to tell everyone to save their money, this game does not deserve it. The creators do not care about the fan base and ruined a legendary could be franchise. The storyline is terrible and lazy, unlike the first game. You will be disappointed. Nothing in this game is good but the graphics.

To start off they kill the main character in the most nonsensical way imaginable. Then they make you play as the antagonist trying to appeal to her reasoning, which we’ll never understand. And to top it all off, Ellie goes on a rampage to kill everyone to kill said antagonist, just to let her go free.
Wish Naughty Dog had more respect for their fan base but this game proves they couldn’t care less.
Rated a 1 out of respect for the first game.

The graphics and environments are phenominal. But unfortunately that is where my enjoyment ended. The writing was laughably bad in my opinion. The narrative and direction felt entirely forced and unnecessary. The game play is slightly improved from the first game but there is not much innovation to be had in general. It's sad for me to say these things because I loved the first game.

The game is visually stunning as expected. Unfortunately thats where the positives end. The combat is as stale as it was in 2014 but this time the story and the characters are nowhere near strong enough to carry the game on their own. Theres a zombie apocalypse going on but the characters are too busy bickering to notice. If you want to escape reality for a while dont get this game. The writing is not good enough. Everything about them is crafted impeccably as to be unlikable as possible. Whether it's Ellie's indignant attitude and lanky, 15-year-old-boy body or Abby killing the main character of the first game and her comically large arms. Every design choice here was made seemingly to show complete contempt for the player base. It's hard to imagine what Neil Druckmann's intent here was. Why would you kill such a beloved character in such an unceremonious way without any kind of final catharsis?

And what is up the sex scene? Was Abby born male or not? Why does it look like they are having anal sex? Did Neil make this entire as inside joke and was hoping to ride on controversy? I guess it worked to some extent.

It's a shame that the game is so repugnant because it seems like the game engine and graphics are very solid, albeit made on system that was outdated even at the time of it's release. I think this game would truly shine on PC or PS5 so that the framerate can really bring out the animations in this game (which are admittedly pretty impressive).

But as a game that is sold on its story, it's just too awful and offensive to pay the price of admission and the contempt which it shows for its players is enough to warrant it a 3.

The story is full of plot holes with little to no character development and a horrible "sex scene " I say that in quotation marks as it is more of a photorealistic horse mating session. The Characters themselves are not given enough time to develop or show any likeable traits. There is a brutal death in the game not used to add any sadness to the narrative but purely to just shock the player. This game is full of discrepancies and while there is ambition here. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Back in 2013, I could not have been more hyped for the original game. At that point there was no game I had anticipated more. And when I played it, I absolutely loved it. The world building and storytelling was great, I developed such an attachment to Joel and Ellie. Seeing the initial conflict between them, with them eventually getting to be like daughter and son. To be honest, I almost cried when Joel fell and got impaled, as I thought he died. I loved the first game so much.

But for TLOU2, man am I disappointed. The world and detail in the game is great, the facial animations are top tier. The graphics aren't quite as impressive for the time as they were for the first one, but they're still good. However, the trailers and ads for the game were so misleading. They made it look like Joel would play a big part in the story with how often they showed him. But nope, killed off by an angry buff woman with a golf club. The writing and story is just HORRIBLE. And why do we need sex scenes? They add nothing in this game. In the original DLC when Ellie realized she was lesbian, whatever I don't care. They just harped on it a bit much. This entire game is "Subvert your expectations" and its awful. I don't want to spoil the ending, despite how terrible it is. Let's just say the ending will only piss you off more.

But if one game could get 10 / 10, it most certainly wouldn't be The Last of Us Part 2.Everything has been said already, and the leaks checked out not only to be totally true and descriptive of events and «story», but it doesn't really show how truly horrible and bleak The Last of Us Part 2 really is. After having watched through the whole game, I wouldn't dream of ever playing it.

Who did they make it for?

Naughty Dog spent «at least 100 million $» to make a repetitive, gory, sadistic murder simulator. Without a plot, story, or characters to care about.

I give it 4 for graphics, voice acting and gameplay.

And then reboots with a fastforward bullcrap and more killing as if we're not tired anymore. And revenge once again.
Unfortunately, the sheer amount of drama related to LGBTQ(put more letters cause I don't fckn follow who is who anymore) makes this game immune to criticism in mainstream media. It's not subtle, it's not an optional side story to explore, it's definitely not a psychological dilemma. It is "we know better" one-sided crappy opinion shoved in players' mouths and they have to swallow it. Dare to badmouth it and SJW will gank up on your editor-in-chief and force you, as an author of the review, to leave with a brand on your forehead.
Feel bad for programmers, artists and environmental designers. Game looks gorgeous, just script-writing makes it unplayable after 2-3 hours.

I was sold initially, I thought that The Last of Us Part II would live up to the previous game and improve upon it significantly in both gameplay and story so I stayed away from the rumors, leaks and even trailers so that I could form my own opinion of the game by playing it instead of being influenced by other peoples biases and opinions.

But after approximately 30 hours of gameplay I have to ask - what story where Naughty Dog trying to tell?

I was willing to put aside the cruel event near the start set things into motion, disrespectful as it was to the characters that we as players have grown to identify with and have an attachment to, I felt that the decisions made by a character in the first game; not to mention the unpredictability of the world they live in caused the events of the second game to take place but that same characters' actions were also the catalyst for the overarching theme behind setting both of the primary protagonists down a similar path. That theme was vengeance, or so I thought and this is why I ask - what story were Naughty Dog trying to tell?

From the beginning of the game and throughout, the characters that the player already identifies with and has some emotional attachment to, feed the players with a lust for revenge but when you, playing as Elly are finally standing in front of the people she has sworn to kill she is held back by her creators (by which I mean Naughty Dog) which means that we as the player can't help but feel deprived of any real satisfaction and the journey of vengeance that we were sold on and coaxed into just results in frustration and anger for the player at the inability to take any meaningful action. There is no satisfaction to be had, no outcome where the person sitting in front of the TV feels any less angry at how these interactions play out. The closest thing to what we as the player expected is probably the Nora event and even that tried to blueball us.

And it just goes on from there, knowing that at crucial moments, the game takes the control out of your hands and at a certain point you may as well watching a movie because the player feels completely powerless.

The other half of this is Naughty Dog providing us context in the form of the other primary Protagonist, Abby by providing perspective and her backstory. I can only assume they did this because they wanted us, the player to empathize with her on some level. Props to Naughty Dog for the attempt but her story should've been nutshelled because putting the player in her shoes for half the game in a bid flesh out her story to get us to identify with her or forgive her in some way or even understand her actions didn't pan out. She felt 2 dimensional. She's a human, she has emotions and feelings and a personality but where was any of that? It needed to be expressed in some way but that never really happened. Everyone has a story, everyone has their reasons for doing the terrible things they've done and none of that matters because in their world people live and die and bad situations are waiting around every corner. That is their reality. So again, while I let that crucial and cruel event at the start of the game go, why was Abby's story necessary? I didn't relate to her any more at the end of the game than I did at the start, it changed nothing and added nothing and to be brutally honest, Abby's story felt like a waste of time, it felt like a story that didn't need to be told at least in half a game.

Why a score of 4? I didn't have any particular issues with gameplay or mechanics although some non rope throwing or ladder moving puzzles would've been welcome while exploring the game world. So this game based off of the graphics, audio, immersion, collectibles and effort put into the game to make it feel special would've earned it at least an 8 or 9 right? The last of us had one crucial ingredient in it and that was its story. It held everything else together and I could look past any niggles I had with any aspect of the game BECAUSE OF THE STORY. I absolutely adored the few interactions between Elly and Joel in this game, they were wonderful and I wanted more of that but instead we had a weird clown gun taped to our hands and when we pull the trigger it would fire bullets and kill as many of the inconsequential enemies infected and human alike but when it came time to pull the trigger against the real antagonists, from the players perspective a depressing dribble of water would come out instead.

This is supported by the fact that in key moments the player has no means of choice or reaction as they cannot follow another approach other than the pre-determined narrative = social agenda.

Now, for those not interested in the story, yes the graphics in part 2 are amazing no doubt, the sound is awesome,UI works well and everything from a technical perspective is well polished, but it is the story that made the first part an epic example of solid storytelling in gaming history. Unfortunately TLOU2 is a letdown.

Thats what happens when you let a not a bit creative talented biased activist taking over a well established brand. its sets it on fire till there is nothing left but ashes.

i had hope this game may become one of the best games so far but as the leaks showed up i tried whatever i could to avaid them but yeah its the internet and when i got some of it there was little hope left for me that it may be out of context.

oh boy when i reached that moment when they killed Joel in a crude and twisted way on top of that as a last act of progressive and truely neil cockmann artistic style made them spit on his remaining with the words: "burn in hell pendejo" while you have to had to play that exact same man/woman "cant quite tell about abbys gender so i call it "it" most of the secound part. Joel was so out of his role, that man that survived so long simply because being cautious and never trusting stranger, just gives all informations to a bunch of stranger which then buchered him.

not enough? i was already massivly frustrated and the next shock, that sex with abby which could be based on Greta Thunberg, had almost to throw up my lunch.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. TLDR: Gameplay is fun, it's the last of us but better, story is hot garbage, nihilistic, full of cliches and "how convenient" moments. 4/10, gave it a 0 because of the positive review bombing it's getting. Game is not a 10, but that's all of the positive reviews. if you want a longer more thought out explanation of my thoughts, watch upper echelon gamings review on this, matches me pretty well, can't link apparently.

For hardcore fans of the first game, do yourself a favor and give this a pass. I played through the first "the last of us" 4 or 5 times over the years and have no intention of going back to this one. I'll make a list of pros and cons but in short, gameplay is fun as ever, expanded stealth mechanics and melee made the game much more engaging and fun. That being said, the plot was some of the most contrived cliche horse dung I've had the displeasure of playing, and that's saying something considering the first game had it's fair share of unbelievable moments. And this isn't me griping about X or Y character died, or didn't die etc, I actually wound up liking the ending more than I thought I was going to half way through the game, but the story was just tiring by the end of it, and i just wanted it to be over. Literally I took a two day break from playing and forced myself to finish it, just so I got to experience how it ended rather than read it. They GoT season 8'd this one.

    Pros:
Stealth is much more engaging, being able to go prone and hide in grass, crawl under obstacles was a welcome change.

Some added mechanics made gun fights and running from enemies more entertaining like squeezing through cracks in the walls. (though some seem like they could have just been cut. The removing the arrow thing they showed off in trailers? I actually had to do this a whopping 3 times the whole game) Some weapons get new ammo types, you can make a suppressor for your pistol etc.

The game is gorgeous as expected, creeping through dark infested areas were as tense as ever, and getting a good view of an area is awesome.

Added some new enemies, good and bad, stealth infected, heavy melee wielding humans, and they all feel mostly organic ( i like that they call out a name if someone dies or they find a body, but how many Amir's and Skylar's can there really be?)

    Cons:
(first off spoilers) Story is the big one here. Characters do things that just do not make sense, even for naughty dog touting that they want to make characters act like people and not characters( maybe it wasn't naughty dog that said this but still) People just happen to be the perfect place, some fights make no sense at all, when abby has to fight ellie, the fact she doesn't get obliterated by the girl who still has all her weapons on her, and is known for traps and stealth is astounding. Truly. Tommy is shot in the head but alive?? Looks like they were going for "oh it went out his eye" Yeah and Jesse got blasted in the eye and he's toasted. Nonsense.

    End Spoilers

Enemies: while some of the new ones are refreshing, some of them just get tiring, the big heavy melee guys I mentioned, should not be able to take multiple shots to the chest from a hunting rifle, just because they're big. You've got a punctured lung, shot in the gut, a bullet lodged in your sternum, plus a few more holes that missed vitals, but that's still a lot of blood. You're not infected, so you're not superman, just go down my man.

Marketing, which I can only describe as deceitful, I'll try to avoid spoilers, and this kind of ties back to the story. A big character is dead, early on, but they released trailers, one in particular where they are clearly alive, and with ellie after she sets off. But, when you get to that moment, they just swapped them for a different character. I get trying to avoid reveals in trailers, but that's nothing but trying to deceive and build hype for the game. Additionally, I had no idea there would be a character swap in this game, never had I seen any indication of this. And besides that, it's like they went out of their way to make this other character dislikable, but still force you to see their part implying "see? They have struggles too, they have people they love too, they're the same!" Or some **** and to that I say F**k off. The first scenes of the game make it clear how that character will behave, and we're supposed to feel sorry for them or something? Give me a break. This isn't game of thrones, and even if it was, did anyone feel sorry for Cersei?

Flashbacks: Oh my lord, not much to say here other than please, for the love of god, stop with the flashbacks. I would have enjoyed this game a lot more, if they had just told the story in order. And that would have reframed a lot of the conflict of the game rather than just be told later "oh see this? They were a kid too!" No **** naughty dog.

In short. Their themes all fall flat due to weak manipulation attempts and plot contrivances.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This is not a 0 or 10 rating game. It depends on your style. I'm single-player focused. I play games for their visuals/atmosphere, play style, and most important storytelling.
On visuals/atmosphere this game is phenomenal. One of the top in this gaming generation. Respect on that front.
On play style, the game style is interesting at first but reverts to stealth kills or smashing square in most cases This gets boring very fast. Replayability is out the window. Its a one and done if you can get through it.
On the story side, this is where the discussion starts.
Whenever a game has to force a character out of character to make the story go forward, I lose interest. Whenever events don't make sense, I lose interest. Let me say, I lost interest big time.
Normally I don't review games, however, this mess of a storyline compelled me, specifically because of all the hyped 95-100 reviews by critics (hacks).
Say we keep the events as is, the method of telling the story is massively mistaken. Had the game started with Abby's story, her emotional turmoil of losing her father, her hunt of Joel leading to killing him, then switching to the story from Ellie's side, I might have been inclined to appreciate her point of view.
However, seeing Abby killing Joel, then switching to her side, there is no chance of me liking her. Whether I play 10 hours or 50 hours. I've already made my mind.
Forcing me to kill a dog, then reprimanding me after the fact, by forcing me to feel guilty, cheap storytelling tricks.
Killing 50+ humans, then feeling bad cause the last human I killed was pregnant. How does that make sense?
Killing every human in sight, then stopping at the last one, suddenly makes things ok?
Leaving a great life, to go kill someone. Killing everything in your path, then letting them go? It is soo out of character that it feels extremely shoehorned. The character of Ellie acts 2 dimensional in such an unrealistic way that it doesn't feel real.
It makes me think of Season 1 of Arrow, where Arrow kills 30+ bodyguards, but only wounds the leader. Why is this 1 person more important than the other 30 I've brutally beaten/murdered?
In my opinion, the story was deliberately set in a way to mess with people, for pure shock value thinking this is great storytelling.
TLOU 1 was a great story, it built characters, built attachments, made me care about 2 fictional characters. It made me like Ellie and Joel so much, that I didn't care that Joel's choice stripped humanity of a possible cure. Screw the cure, I like these 2 characters and their interaction. That's powerful storytelling and character-building!
TLOU2 did nothing for the characters. Beyond Ellie, who I liked cause of the 1st game, there is not a single character that made an impact on me. Sadly enough, had I known Ellie from TLOU2 only, I'm sure I wouldn't have liked her either. Her actions are incoherent and give no closure.
This is where my scoring of the game goes to a 3.
    No character attachments.
I won't remember this game positively.
If someone mentions this game to me, I'll advise them not to play it.
Sad to see a game with such great potential being wasted for mere shock value and cheap storytelling tricks.
Great storytelling will make a game live forever. Nice graphics won't. I'd play a remastered TLOU1 anytime, there is absolutely no way I'd play a remastered TLOU2 at any stage.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I played the first part through in the lead up to this release. It was the fourth time I've played it through and I thought I'd overdone it by playing it again but I was blown away by the pacing and story telling yet again. It is easily the best story game ever made, even now.

Any chance of this game succeeding ended immediately when Joel was killed. The original game is basic copy of Die Hard: an extremlely determined tough guy (with the help of Ellie) overcomes enormous odds to deliver a young girl to a hospital to save the world. That's pure entertainment.

The sequel to this game would be to do something similar. That's the expectation people have for a sequel. Somebody needs to tell Naughty Dog this. What we have here it the equivalent of John McClane taking a bullet in the first 5 minutes of Die Hard 2 and his wife going on a rampage through the streets of New York killing every single person just to get to the one bad dude who killed McClane. After 20 hours you flip to play Hans Gruber for a further 20 hours and by the end you love Hans Gruber and hate John McClane. Yep, that's the story in a nutshell. And yes, it fails miserably.

    Postitives
    - The best visual design and graphics I've seen in a game
    - Incredible motion capture
    - Set-pieces. There's some really cool events that really keep you on your toes.
    - Flash backs to earlier times. It reminds you why you loved the first game, but makes me sad that they still had the skills to make a great sequel but chose not to.

    Negatives
    - Narrative. It's long, slow and dumb. They try to convince you that one or the other character is good, the short of it is that you're falling and out of love with mass murdering psychopaths. The game is meant to be cheese, if you take it seriously as a form of art then you're sympathising with murderers.
    - Characters. They're unlikeable and miserable.
    - Art Direction. Ellie and Joel have become considerably uglier, is there some kind of new virus making people ugly?
    - Length. It's 4 times longer than it should have been. This game could have been released years ago had someone looked up the definition of "editing". I feel sorry for the software developers who spent years of their lives meticulously crafting abandoned environments, they did a fantastic job. It's such a shame they were let down by the top man.
    - The new "dodge" mechanism. It doesn't work properly, you still get hit even when dodging. The directions for how to use it are misleading. It's utterly infuriating to fight characters using it. I punched my controller into a chair in frustration while repeatedly dying from it. I haven't done this since I was a teenager (which was a long time ago). I wasn't expecting this shoddiness.
    - FPS. It has frame rate issues (on the standard console version). This isn't something I recall seeing in a Naughty Dog game, and it's just sloppy. It breaks the 4th wall everytime it happens and it destroys the immersion.
    - Gameplay. The game is too difficult in Normal mode, I died probably 100 times in the playthrough. When you do succeed it feels like a fluke. The guitar feature is trash, how can I play a guitar skilfully with one big dumb ass button?

This game teaches a good moral lesson. Don't pre-order games!
This game isn't enjoyable. Please cannon this story or move on to something else ND!

While gameplay received better animations and such, it mostly remained the exact same and becomes monotonous and predictable over the 25+ hour story. While it’s not bad, you'd hope for a much bigger upgrade or overhaul of crafting and other gameplay mechanics, but many remained completely untouched. But the gameplay isn’t what causes this game to be a failure in my opinion, because that’s not what people really play TLOU for anyways. People play for the characters and story, which is nothing short of disappointing and misguided in this game. The utter lack of respect toward previous or even new characters prevents the player from getting invested in them, and the game fails to utilize the one relationship the player was already invested in going into the game. Instead they demolish that relationship, and never really show it getting back to anything of what it used to be. Most other characters in this game are stagnant and replaceable, and while they have good performances, fail to make me care about them in a meaningful way. That is, until they get brutally murdered on a quest for revenge. By the end of the game I was so numb to violence nothing shocked me anymore, and I’m not sure what the game was even trying to say through all this violence and misery. What I do know is that I feel devastated for Ellie and deep hatred for another character. I truly hope Naughty Dog lets this franchise die in the pit they dug for it. I absolutely loved the first game, but this train wreck wants me to feel depressed for nothing. Some of the lessons it tries to teach seem so stupidly simple I asked myself if I was even hearing it right. All I can hear now is the ringing in my ears after listening to one of my favorite games get pillaged and massacred in the name of “Subverted Expectations”. Do not recommend. Expand

Gameplay mechanics are great - enemies behave so naturally!
Graphics is absolutely awesome for currentGen!

But please, stop pushing this SJW propaganda everywhere. I'm from Russia, I don't event want to know your political preferences, I just wanna explore post apocalyptic world, not all this sh*t.

So, only 2 for now because of propaganda...

TLOU was a game about humanity, TLOU2 is just torture porn with badly written characters.

The story is garbage, characters are empty, and the gameplay feels a decade old. Graphics are nice. Senseless and hateful

The divide between "professional" video game critics and your "typical" gamer is appaling and surreal. That's right, I'm looking at you IGN, AGAIN. Why in the world are the ratings so polarized? Are big video game critics afraid to go against a "progressive" game that make use of "non-traditional" protagonist in fear that they will trigger some media outrage? I am convinced big video game critics are pressured into a biased approach which unfortunately renders them useless. People don't trust big companies like IGN for video game reviews.

On a good note, the acting/voice acting was good. The technical aspect of the game was good as well. The art behind the game was amazing and stunning. Unfortunately, people don't usually play video game to stare at the amazing decor.

On a bad note, the game's story literally makes no sense. I have no idea what the writers behind this story were thinking. I don't give a damn about the fact that the game really tried to push this "SJW" ideology onto the player. Gay, trans, lesbian, man, woman, deer, I don't care what the character identify as. It's all fine by me and its probably the case for the vast majority of players. A lot of response to this well deserve criticism will obviously be brushed off as "trans hate, LGBTQ hate, etc". That's not the case. The story was utterly butchered to the point where I didn't care anymore. The last 2 hours of the game are useless and kill the game. Even if the story was trash, It should have ended at an OBVIOUS point but it didn't. I dont understand why you guys tried to push it that far again. It didnt have to go there and it was obvious. On top of the bad story, the story telling was so disorienting. After playing as the 2nd protagonist for multiple hours, you enter a state of mind where you don't even care about the main storyline. I get what you tried to do but it practically did not work.

Anyways, I'm going to stop here and give it a 4 out of 10 out of pity for the technical and artistic team because they actually did theyre job properly unlike others. Try focusing on a good organic storyline like you did in the first game and the rest will follow through.

HOWEVER, fans love the first game for it's amazing characters and well told story... none of that is in this game. Graphics are 10, gameplay is a 6 but the story is a big fat Zero. Expand

The Last of Us Part II is the high point of the PlayStation 4. The plot is controversial, but the game is the incredibly addictive adventure of Ellie, from which it is impossible to pull away from the opening and to the very end.

Not everyone is going to enjoy the motives of The Last of Us Part II. But if you try and manage to accept the subliminal and not so subtle messages as a fact that the world has gone awry and that people have the need to have somewhere or someone to belong to as their own way out, then... You will witness the boundaries of gaming expand. You will witness a true masterpiece.

If you loved the original for its great characters and well-paced story – stay away from this game. However, if you’re aching to sink into the depths of depression, or just want to cut some throats and burn some zombies – Part II will deliver. [Issue#247, p.72]
