Okay, first of all, I'll start with the graphics, as they're the least important aspect, I suppose, but I find them largely overhyped. Why? While the game looks fantastic from a distance, the image quality falls apart upon closer inspection. The worst offender is the implementation of film grain. If you're going to make a game that pushes the PS4, that touts PS4 Pro enhancements, and that is supposed to look great on a 4K TV, don't make film grain mandatory. Offer an option to turn it off. We don't buy new technology to play a game that looks like it's running off of a VHS tape. As for the graphics themselves, it's a fine looking game, but not the best I've seen from this generation. Many textures are rather crude. You'll come across many items within the environment that don't even look like they have textures -- they're bland, washed out looking, and muddy, almost looking like they failed to load like in old Unreal Engine 3 games. You'll also notice a lot of pop-in within the environment as you move throughout it. All of that said, the animations within the cinematics are tremendous, lending a realistic feel to the characters even if they're merely video game characters.

As for the game itself, it's the first game improved. You can now go prone in stealth, making encounters more enjoyable. Other than that, though, there's not much that has changed. If you liked the gameplay in the first game, this is that but slightly better.

Now where everything falls apart is the story. I'm not going to get into politics or social commentary, I'll specifically talk about the game. This is very much a story that pretty much ruins the first game. While it has its highs, its lows are incredibly low. Not only does it retcon some things, it ruins a lot of the goodwill that they had built with the first game. I'd say that 65% of the story is outright bad. That doesn't make me happy, either. The first game is one of my favorite games ever. The Last of Us Part II didn't ruin my love for that first game, but it does make me wish it would've been a one & done.

This is my honest impression, as I'm not interested in review bombing. If you come to TLOU merely for gameplay, I'd say maybe it's a 6/10, but I do not; I came mostly for the story, but I was disappointed with the presentation, too, after much was said about how strong that aspect was. I'm unsure why outlets like Digital Foundry found no issue with the low texture quality on many objects. I'm talking PS3 level quality. Overall, it doesn't look like a PS3 game, it does look like a PS4 game, making the low quality textures within the environments, and the heavy use of film grain, all the more jarring.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. What a disappointment! I can’t imagine Naughty Dog not knowing what made the 1st game so special. For me anyway it was the banter between Joe and Eli and it just being a awesome story with amazing characters. The first game has such heart and made it feel truly special. There’s a little of this at times in the last of us part 2 like the flash back at the museum. Otherwise all the TLOUP2 is, is a revenge story. A revenge story with a lot of far left propaganda shoehorned in which is not my idea of a good time. I could care less if someone is gay, LGBTQ or whatever to each their own. Most people could care less who someone screw all that matters is if you are a good person but when politics be it far left or far right are shoehorned into a game they will only destroy half of your Fanbase if you push them as hard as this game does. I will not be buying any more naughty dog games! Expand

i play videogames for the storytelling, this was the worst story i have ever seen, it is so inconsistent with the first game and just doesnt make any sense. its not that the story isnt up to my taste, its plain bad writting.

there is a reason why people hated the last season of game of thrones, when there is such a build up from the previous seasons you cant fail this hard at the story.

Never played the first part, Joel dying didnt bother me much, and in the end I actualy liked Abby more than Ellie, she had more character and likeability. I also liked how the game tells us that there is no good or evil, its about perspective. But the story seemed a bit pointless, in the end no one gets what they want, nothing was achieved. And the SJW stuff was way too much, it hit the bar when telling us that Levi identifies as a man. Why do such a thing to a 13 year old girl? I mean she is living in a insane tribe and the world ended, who would care. Very few characters I liked aswell, Abby, Owen and Tommy was my favorites, the rest didnt care. The gameplay was very fun, had a blast with it but it got boring very quickly Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I hope the developers read these comments. As a game developer myself, I always did, even when I disagreed with the comments. This review is for them:
    -The Good/Great:
-Environments/Sound/Physics/Tech Art was the best I have seen in a game. An unbelievable masterpiece. You should all be proud. The Art Director and team deserve a medal.
-The inclusion of diverse characters. Well done. I applaud you. My favorite character was Trans-gendered and it's nice to see.

    The Bad:
-Gameplay. There is a lot to write about here. The gameplay was one of the worst parts of the game. Overall, the level of violence was too much.
-Game Design. This is the same game mechanic as Drake's/The Last of Us/Day's End... For goodness sake let me pick up more than 9 (that's right NINE) bullets. Ridiculous. There are many other ways of ensuring a player can't horde bullets. Lazy.
-Story. There is a lot written about this so I won't' rehash all of this here. The characters weren't true to who they were in the first game. As an example, there is no way Tommy would have pushed Ellie to go find Abby at the end after Ellie had settled down (this was Tommy's whole motivation for creating a community!!). And he certainly wouldn't have said "well I can't go". BS. One example of dozens.
-And my worst gripe: Abby. This was handled so poorly. I absolutely detested playing this character for what she did to Joel... and that was half the game! If you want to understand my score, that is the major part.

Here's the key take-away: PLAYABLE CHARACTERS NEED TO BE LIKEABLE. You need to connect with them on some level and Abby was a dispicable character... DO NOT MAKE 'The Last of Us 3' WITH ABBY AS A PLAYABLE CHARACTER !!!!!!!!!! That will ruin the game. Period.

    Good luck.

The Last of Us Part II will be a game where we can say the sequel never existed. Last of Us 1 is the true ending of Ellie and Joel's story. Part 2 reminds me of the Batwoman TV Show on the CW.

Also, the one who came up with the idea that it would be interesting/fun/immersive to be forced to play with a non-immersive character that all but narcissistic-minded people hate to play as.
It is also part of this bad story that they changed the personality of those we got to know in TLOU1. Changed without explaining how or why It all seems to be to force the narrative for this sorry excuse for a story.

Technically you cant complain about the game art and programming wise, but the story is irredeemable in the way it treats the players expectations, the death of Joel is frankly cheap and disgraceful ending for his character, the violence of his death is the kind of emotive basic garbage taratino would use to hook his audience, the revenge plot is too basic in its abuse of the players sentiment, lesbians are small percentage of the actual game audience, but they make you play out this garbage dull lesbian relationship that seems founded on so little real underlying personality chemistry, i'm just not feeling it, the Asian guy just some seed father garbage spare wheel to their lesbian relationship, the inconsideracy towards characters in this game would only makes sense from the ego of a third wave feminist, they also make you play out the game as abby the character who murdered Joel, so repulsive, this game could not be anymore aggravating in the way its make the characters play out the game, proof if any were needed that a technically amazing game with an unsatisfying ill thought out story is going to be **** no matter the skill deployed elsewhere. This could be the greatest game ever made, and I'd still despise it because of the crunch development. That's what's p***ing me off the most about this game, the fact that a horrible, abusive practice went into making it and game journos are letting the man responsible get away with it with no consequences because he's hiding behind progressivism and using it as a defense for his actions. The big reason Abby exists is because Joel killed a no name character in the first game. Ellie is stopping the cycle of revenge by not killing Abby? She literally kills hundreds of people while just trying to get to her. It’s far too late for the moral high ground.

The story as a whole feels like a big compilation of progressive inclusion. I get wanting to be inclusive, but it feels like they just had a checklist of people to include and taped some stuff together. If you’re going to do it, try to actually do it well.

If you are looking for an immersive, gripping story with memorable, deep characters that undergo significant character development which reflects their personality traits. Combining all these aspects together to make them feel real and alive. Well... avoid this game at all costs.

Whereas in the last of us 1, you had all those things. It was the biggest strength and draw for the game. Characters that felt real, and reacted to their situations as their personality dictates. A constant struggle between survival, and finding joy, a reason to live. It was especially apparent between adults and children. In TLOU2 every character is dead inside already, their bodies just haven't stopped moving yet. They are so flat that you could replace everyone with anything else and the story wouldn't be affected at all. So forgetful, so meaningless the entire way through, and I'm not talking about the "main story arc" everyone is raging about. It's like this the whole damn game.

Even if you completely remove the story, the characters, etc. from the equation the game is still mediocre at best. The combat is sooo boring and clunky just like the first game. it's just expanded on a little in TLOU2 but it plays the same. Also, the incredibly tedious and un-needed push dumpsters/ladders around is still in the game! There is so much useless filler in this game, and not the fun exploration/discovery type like in zelda, witcher, or other similarly open-world exploration games. One of my friends literally dozed off on the couch while exploring some ruined buildings at one point.

The only saving grace of this game is the art direction and the graphical fidelity. The art departments did an incredible job! The world looks truly breathtaking, the animations are incredible, dynamic, and incredibly varied. Have you seen the mud?! It looks SO real when you walk and slide through it.

I really feel for those in the art departments that worked so passionately on this project, only to be associated with all the other downfalls of TLOU2.

So ultimately I give this game a 3.5/10, purely because of how much incredible work the art team did. Without that, I'd give it a 2/10 simply because the game seems stable.

When you make a linear story-driven game more akin to an interactable movie than a game, you better have an incredible story and immersively real characters to make it a successful title.

Make the bar owner a “homophobic” person because he says the establishment is family friendly; force the player to play as a genderless looking character, kill off the best character in the whole franchise (Joel) disrespectfully so...

Huge disappointment of a sequel. Could have been awesome if they’d have kept all the pandering and social justice messaging out of it and simply focused on what made the first so great — a father and daughter relationship, post-apocalyptic survival, tense atmosphere, and so on.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Imagine playing with Arhtur for most of RDR2, but at the end you switch up to Micah just to kill Arthur. John never pursues revenge because "it's bad". This is TLOU 2. The game tries to be profound when the story is just simplistic revenge, except you don't even exercise said revenge, you let the person who killed Joel and destroyed your hand go away because "revenge is bad". By the media reviews, you would expect this game would have a storytelling comparable to Watchmen's, except you get a script wrote by a kid.

Joel, the dude who mastered the ways of survival of this world, fell for the most stupid and plain trap in history. Joel would never fall for such a trap, they downgraded the past game character's intelligence.

The game doesn't do much to improve the combat of the first, the I.A is plain potatoes and it's clear that Druckmann tried to force his agenda in this game too. Neil is such a narcissist human being that he inserted himself into the game TWICE. He is the character spitting on Joel's corpse and later on he appears as a card with max intelligence as his main stat. As a person who loved the first one and was hoping to see Ellie grow as an individual, I am disappointed.

Just like in the first one, Ellie is accompanied by someone most of the time. Then you play as Senator Armstrong. Then revenge is bad.

It literally is like a massive middle finger to anyone who loved and related to Joel and loved the first game. Literally the worst sequel of all time and the WORST EXPERIENCE I'VE EVER HAD WHILE PLAYING A VIDEO GAME!!!

Shame because the graphics are the best ever in a video game (though the amount of film grain is the worse I've ever seen, honestly), some of the best music and sound design ever, and amazing gameplay. My one complaint about the gameplay is the controls/aiming is no where near as good as the first game. There's something off about it that can't even be explained by the framerate being half TLOU:R

But anyways, unless you want to really know how terrible this game is, don't even think about playing it. I NEVER sell games, but for this one I have to even though I bet encounter mode would probably be fun, it's just not worth $60 IMO

The first game had a great story throughout and mediocre gameplay that was kept interesting because of the chemistry between the characters. Part 2 has a poor story with slightly improved gameplay but very little chemistry between characters. Its not 'politcally charged' at all - those criticisms are bizarre to me.
The game, for me, is split in two halves with an epilogue.
The first half is very good. You play as Ellie and she really remains as the only character worth a damn.
The second half's story, however, is a terrible convoluted mess. Flashbacks within flashbacks trying to get you invested in shallow characters you already know the fates of. An 'alternate' tale from the perspective of another - essentially the antagonist but the game purposefully tries to blur the line between antagonist and protagonist - which tries to fill you remorse for glorified random NPC's you killed as Ellie. I didn't give a damn about anything this other story the game tried to tell. It was a painfully boring 12+ hours. If the game continued telling Ellie's story instead of this, it would have been much better.
Eventually the Ellie and the antagonist's stories catch up and we enter the ending sequence/epilogue. The ending is as underwhelming equally as underwhelming, leaving you with a feeling of pointlessness and frustration - if you do manage to feel invested at all.
Its a real shame. It had such promise around the 12 hour mark but instead of developing further it just dwells on events which it tries to force the importance of.
An uninspired, drawn out and irritating story in a story-focussed game makes this not worth a play, especially at full price.

I just finished the game this morning. If I were blind to everything Naughty Dog as a company has done up untill this point and solely focused on The Last of Us 2 (TLOU2) game, I’d give the game a 6/10.

[POSITIVE] It’s an okay game. Excellent ground-breaking in-game UI customization, modifications, and difficulty settings. Excellent beautiful environments, great graphics, and slightly better controls than the previous game (wish they would have done more with stealth options, but). And the flashback scenes are by far the absolute best part of the game! And if I’m being honest, I’d prefer if the entire TLOU2 was just those flashbacks.

[NEGATIVE] The story and characters. TLOU2 tries way too hard to be art, so much so, that it sacrifices the elements of morality for it. It tries numerous times to disturb you without ever earning it. Characters a badly built, poorly written and fleshed-out, and most of the time are out of character (e.g., Joel). Ellie and Dina’s dialogue interactions are poorly constructed, often leading to their “love” scenes feeling unbelievable, fake, and forced. The game uses cheap, artificial, manipulative story mechanics, instead of intelligent or thoughtful characterization to garner sympathy for the character of Abby despite her being the textbook literal definition of a mass-murdering sociopath (she doesn’t/can’t feel sympathy or regret, she doesn’t have morals, and she doesn’t have or can maintain loyalty). Finally, the sex scene looks like it was made by someone who has never had sex before or who has never had consensual sex in their life (you know, forget things like foreplay, condoms, or lube. Just bite the pillow and ram that sucker in dry). Never mind the fact that Neil Druckmann inserted himself in the game for self-gravitas.

I said I would have given this game a 6/10. However, Naughty Dog has recently done the following:
    1) Mislead TLOU fans by swapping out models and stories in the trailers for the current in-game models and story.
    2) Mass unwarranted/illegal DMCA take-downs by Muso Unlimited on all media platforms for any person who so much as even dares mention the game allowed before it was released.
    3) Bribing critics for 5-star overly positive review bombings before the game was released (FYI the Xbox and PlayStation store had 5k 5-star “user” ratings before the game was released when it wasn’t possible to do so as a player).
    4) Blackmailing and blacklisting social media companies and media personalities for any unfavorable or negative reviews.
    5) Naughty Dog forcing stores to disallowing cancellations of TLOU2 pre-orders.
    6) Naughty Dog forcing stores to not allowing gamers to return or trade-in TLOU2 game.
    7) Naughty Dog politicizing TLOU2 and pushing specific agendas and pandering to SJW’s.
    8) Sony being outright hypocritical on their censorship standards and what they consider to be X-rated content (FYI – Japanese games that show even slight cleavage or butt crack must have a lens flare or blur, but the sex scene in TLOU2 is 100% okay).
    9) The slough of double-standards.
    10) Publicly ganging-up on and bullying anyone who disagrees with Naughty Dog and TLOU2 and who doesn’t give the game a positive glowing review.
    11) Lastly, using all the same derogatory and defamatory PR tactics that were used for previous media like The Last Jedi. (E.g., if you don’t agree with us and our high and mighty personal view; then you’re obviously a Russian Bot, Troll, Homophobe, Sexist, Etc. Why? Because we aren’t mentally or emotionally mature enough to handle constructive criticisms and feedback without retaliating).

Knowing all of the above, I decided to give the game a final score of 2.5/10. FYI - NO game or movie is ever a 10/10 perfect flawless success with zero mistakes, or a 0/10 complete and absolute failure. Nor should it be. They don’t exist and those kind of ratings are inaccurate and unrealistic. Don’t believe or trust any company or person that gives a 10/10, 5/5, 0/5, or 0/10 score.

The Last of Us 2 is not a satisfying or entertaining story experience or even a story that needed to be told. Especially given how many other movies, shows, games, and books there are that tell the story of revenge and the consequences of revenge better.

It was a marketing stunt. After the First Mission the game changes to Raiden and the script kicks out . What i got was an incredible 4 wall breaking experience giving context to the rookie character as the protocol for Solid Snake Simulation. Side characters works, the Dialogues are outstanding and you even have the chance to fight alongside the legend solid snake. The character is respected in every single way to the point of being him the one giving the last words until the credits role and of course he lives. The fanbase was still divided but after many years the groundbreaking story is still a substantial point of how to subvert expectation properly.

Now compare this to the last of us 2: Joel an iconic character arm with knowledge and experience in survival for 25 years all the sudden forgot about to survive in an apocalyptic environment and the script which is all over the place butcher the man in less than 20 minutes on screen. 5 as playable character and 15 until he lied death.
The game forced you to play with the killer and the director tried to hard making her character human or feel sympathy with the player. This doesn't work so the player grab hopes that the ending fill this whole by at least complete the goal of the story which was revenge. This is portrayed as ellie hunt every single member of the screw but throw everything away by letting the killer alive into a nihilistic ending. So you have an iconic character death for nothing. You forced the player to accept his presence as flashbacks and send the entire weak script to the sky by thinking the message is more important than character progression and cohesive storytelling layers.

it's a story that don't give you anything . Throw away every feeling you got toward this characters and pretend to deliver a message within all the violence. There is no more be said and no reason to discuss any Agenda or feminist frequency ideologies Druckman loves so much. Instead of been a love letter to the fans it become a tool for divide gamers and send them into a depressing journey without conclusion.

This game deserve a 0 because what it does is nothing more than inflict damage to our society and to the few places humans had to shield themselves from reality. Video games

Graphics? absolutely amazing, didn't expect anything else from Naughty Dog but yeah, this game looks amazing animations, voice acting, everything else too, just amazing.
Gameplay? Debateable. I found it to be lacking, not really much development since Last Of Us 1, but it was still fun to play.

Story? Absolutely atrocious. It completely **** over everything from the first game, unlikeable new characters, it just makes you want to stop playing the game entirely. I don't have a problem with crazy plot twists and subverted expectations, but this is just an insult to everyone who played the first game, just lots of drama and violence don't make a good story. However i did like how the game represented LGBT characters, not being on the nose about "look how progressive we are", that was done really well.

So if everything is great except the story, why only a 3/10?
Because the story is the most important part of this game, by a long shot. It's the reason everbody loved the first one and it's the reason this game is selling like hot cakes, but it's just a **** slap in the face.

I hope this game is just a mishap, because i still love Naughty Dog and hope their next game will be a good one again.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Is this the masterpiece they told me it would be? Well, let's see...

Graphically it is gorgeous and I believe pushes the PS4 as far as it can probably go. The performance was also decent throughout the game, with very few barely noticeable dips in FPS. There are some bugs in the game, but nothing game-breaking.

I enjoyed the selection of weapons and modifications that come with said weapons. AI is somewhat better than TLOU but nothing impressive tbh. I suppose we will have to wait another 10-20 years for AI improvements that might make games feel challenging without relying on "do more damage to player"

The biggest failure for this game is the story itself. It is confusing and extremely painful to watch/play. I am not even referring to the excessive and unnecessary violence that takes place throughout the game without any reason whatsoever.

I am referring to the fact that you commit all of these violent acts in order to get revenge... And after having murdered enough people to equal the population of a small village, you let the person you went to kill and get "revenge" on... Go.

Rendering the killing of all those NPC lives meaningless. It makes Tarantino and Michael B movies look amazing in comparison.
The one thing this game does right is angering the viewer/player by making them watch one of their favorites and arguably one of the most beloved/favored characters in decades, and then follows it by FORCING!

The player to play as the one who murdered Joel in order to redeem her and or give us some background and understanding why she did it.
However, at that point, the majority of people are thinking about only one thing. I want to strangle this character. Which they never get to do because she is this amazing new character that we are supposed to feel for and have some sex scenes with. Why the unnecessary and completely pointless sex scene? I don't know...

Final thoughts. A lot of naive and brainwashed individuals will tell you that angry trolls and fake accounts/bots are the only ones reviewing it. I say to you, read the reviews of TLOU. They were very likely written by the very same people who are now referred too as "Toxic" by the corrupt "critics".

All the 10/10 reviews were written out of fear of being blacklisted by Sony and or Naughty Dog. You see, review copies and everything else that comes with being a Sony Shill, are all they care about. Not you the customer.

ND played on our/your emotions, they used Joel on the trailer in a cleverly edited way, which in the game turned out to be Jesse... Covering Ellie's mouth from behind. Except we saw Joel on the trailer. They used that to bait people in and it worked. They, later on, forced all reviewers to never mention Abby or what happens to Joel, because if people knew, they would cancel their preorders.

This game receives a 3/10 for dishonest marketing during its initial trailer, a terribly written story that tries too hard to be all "revenge bad". Oh, and by the way... I just finished killing 20.000 people to make my point this game was trying to make.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Why would they kill of Joel like that? He was a beloved character from the first game, if you want to kill him off, fine, but give him a real end. Have him die like a hero sacrificing himself to protect Ellie at the very end of the game or something, not like an idiot at the start of the game. It ruins the entire story the first game built, and TLOU is a game whose strong point was the story. Why, just why, ND? Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Incredibly terrible story, literally writes the original characters into being morons and villains to push a narrative. That narrative being "revenge cycle is bad".
They take this to an extremely stupid place, with Joel dying and Ellie murdering all of Abby's(child of an NPC in first game that golf clubs Joel) crew, only to suddenly realized revenge isnt worth it after Tommy is shot, she loses everything to include 2 fingers and already killed people far more innocent then Abby to just let her live. It then ends on a weird note that Joel is evil and it's better to let someone who murdered essentially you father live because revenge is bad even though you already killed like a 100 people for that revenge.

Another example of my money wasted again, I don't learn obviously. I'm sick of the politics being forced in the games, Dr. Goebbels would be proud of them.

The games media critic scores are simply championing the political stance the game takes. The fact that this game is rated higher than classics like God of War, Doom Eternal, or Bloodborne frankly only serves to undermine games journalism down to simply a meme.

    Avoid.

There is nothing special about this game and its a shame. You can really see the effect of Amy Hennig leaving this studio because her writing was everything that made these games shine. Without her they are just your generic pretty AAA games with no soul. Naughty Dog has gone from the top of my favorite devs to the bottom really damn quick. RIP Naughty Dog. Expand

What is this garbage? I'm only about 2 1/2 to 3h in, but you do have Zombies in the Zombie apocalyptic game don't you? I haven't even gotten to the gay sex part yet and I already feel like I've gotten F&%&ed.

If you thought Death Stranding as boring I give you The Last Of Us part 2.... It gets a 1 and not a 0 because there are no game breaking bugs. I use the term Game loosely

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I do not get the hype that was build around this game, it was promoted as a gameplay revolutionary game with interesting storytelling and unpredictable plot. Naughty Dog ruined the franchise and the characters everyone loved and made us play as the villain for hours for no reason, basically a walking movie. How would you enjoy that? Not to mention the totally random and raw deaths that feel robotic. The first part of TLOU was so much better and well done, this game is not and is not worth the name of a sequel. Expand

The Last of Us Part II is the high point of the PlayStation 4. The plot is controversial, but the game is the incredibly addictive adventure of Ellie, from which it is impossible to pull away from the opening and to the very end.

Not everyone is going to enjoy the motives of The Last of Us Part II. But if you try and manage to accept the subliminal and not so subtle messages as a fact that the world has gone awry and that people have the need to have somewhere or someone to belong to as their own way out, then... You will witness the boundaries of gaming expand. You will witness a true masterpiece.

If you loved the original for its great characters and well-paced story – stay away from this game. However, if you’re aching to sink into the depths of depression, or just want to cut some throats and burn some zombies – Part II will deliver. [Issue#247, p.72]
