Joel had a terrible death and couldve been better. They paid off more critics than putting money into this horrendous game. False advertisement and a even worse story.     If you approve / like the writing choices made for this game you're either a sociopath or you're paid by the developers. The story of this game is a disgrace at best, a spit in the face of iconic characters (literally) and of millions of gamers. However, you can't deny the absolutely stunning graphics, and great soundtracks. In fact, these are the only good things in this wasted franchise.

    The technical aspect of the game is incredible and everything related to the environment and the mechanics are quite well elaborated.

    The game tends to be too long and unnecessary in some respects and breaks with all the themes that were built in the first game.

    The story is simply bad, the characters are rewritten for the benefit of the plot, too many plot conveniences and an empty, meaningless and inconclusive ending.

    SPOILERS!

    I do not disagree that Joel dies, the idea of ​​revenge is an interesting concept on paper, however, the execution is always more important than the idea and this work fails completely in the execution.
    Joel's death is hasty, forced and a very large character potential is wasted by removing him from the plot.

    On the other hand, the scene of Joel's death doesn't make sense, how did they know who Joel was? How come the shelter doors were open when they escaped from zombies? Why does Abby mention that she knows him without having interacted with him before?

    Because of this, all those pleasant moments between Elie and Joel are lost, and the story to try to "justify" Elie's behavior, makes use of very boring flashbacks that in hindsight do not make much sense and are mere routine memories to appeal to. the good moments

    And the worst part is Abby, because it is the character that begins this sequel. The game tries to give humanity and empathize with it, however, it is done at an important moment and just when it kills Jesse. Not only that, but in a revenge story, the least you can hope for is a personal relationship and character building between Abby and Elie. However, there is no character dialogue between the two, and Abby is the least, one of the most forgettable characters due to the little characterization she has and what will be remembered for having killed Joel.

    The ending is disastrous and also makes no sense in the first place, the group that kidnaps Abby what is that group supposed to be and does? Where are they supposed to go at the end with the boat? Why does Elie let Abby live? They have not spoken at all or a constructive interaction, are you really trying to make believe that someone does not kill another person without knowing a little what that person is like? Why is Dina leaving the house? What about Jackson?

    This sequel raises more questions than the first, but these are not due to a depth of a good story, but a totally convenient script and without having delved at all.

    Revenge is a controversial topic that can take a very important role in a story like The Last of Us, however, considering that there have been plot conveniences, little or no character construction and empty outcome. Well, it does not manage to open a conversation about humanity or offer a good outcome according to what was stated in the first game, much less the second.

    This game may be a wonder, as I said before, in the technical aspect and a reference in the evolution of video games in terms of aesthetics. But in the narrative aspect it is a failure and I hope and I only wish this game were not like that because it is unprofitable and it causes me a lot of disappointment.

    Playability: 8/10
    Narrative aspects: 0/10
    Replay the game? Absolutely no.

    A game like The Last of Us does not stand out for the gameplay or the graphics, it stands out for the story and that is why without a good story that has a minimum of coherence, it does not deserve a 1 for not fulfilling the fundamental piece of this franchise.    … Expand

Every step forward in this game's narrative confirmed my greatest fear: that not only did a sequel never need to exist, but that making one had the very real potential to harm the legacy of two characters we all grew to love over the course of the first game. Worse still, we were sold a false bill of goods. Every advert we saw and every word out of Naughty Dog's mouth told us that we would be going on another journey with Ellie and Joel. We did no such thing. Instead we were treated to Ellie and Joel being brutalized and tossed aside so that Naughty Dog could force upon us a new protagonist that none of us wanted or cared about. The utter contempt with which Naughty Dog treated its own beloved characters and the dishonest way in which they've dealt with the fandom override any and all of the good qualities this game has. What score could I possibly give a game that seemingly exists for no other reason than to trash what I love and spit in my face except zero? (Note that I was forced to give it at least a 1 because the website has decided not to permit reviews giving the game a zero despite zero being an option)… Expand

    The game was ''ok'' until the character switch. Don't care about Abby's perspective. The story should have just focused on Ellie and Joel and then Ellie's revenge. The game was solid but the story was trash. I'll give it a 3/10.

    The only good thing about this game is the graphics and sound design. The story is abysmal in the sense that none of the characters behave as you would expect them to after playing the first game. It seems the story honestly would be better off if they just left Joel and Ellie alone and has used different protagonists. Also, one would imagine that when creating a sequel you also attempt to push your gaming mechanics to a new level to raise the bar of gaming and create a fresh experience while maintaining what worked in your previous game. Instead, ND decided to just do a copy and paste of the first TLOU, which feels outdated and out of place in 2020. I honestly had to force myself to finish the game due to a lack of interest or engagement, so I at least would have an trophy to show for the 60 dollars I burned on this game. If you like disappointment, this is the game for you. The game is getting a 3 out of 10 only because of the graphics and sound tbh, the art (with the exception of the character models) and sound design teams deserve applaud, every other team should re-evaluate the work they do and ask themselves if what they’re doing will push the franchise in a positive direction or negative. I will not be buying any future naughty dog games or listening to critic reviews. I would honestly bet critics were threatened to leave good reviews after playing TLOU2.… Expand

    This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Just finished the game on survivor difficulty. I’ll start with the things I liked about the game. First of all, it looks beautiful. I stopped multiple times throughout to take in the environment. Pretty amazed they got it to run at a near-constant 30fps. Secondly, I really enjoyed the flashbacks between Joel and Ellie; especially the in the museum. When Joel had Ellie put on a helmet and pretend to take off into space, it brought tears to my eyes. What a cool moment.

    I also enjoyed some of the new additions to the game. Having dogs be able to track your scent was pretty cool. I had fun using the crossbow, and that basement hospital fight against that giant mutated infected (or Rat King, as it’s called) was pretty awesome.

    Sadly, that’s pretty much where my enjoyment ends. I’m not even sure where to start. They did Joel a huge disservice in the way that he died. It is an insult to think that he would abandon all of his past survival skill, knowledge, experience, etc. and mosey on in to this unknown group’s location. How do you go from: ‘I’ve been on both sides’, ‘I’ve struggled for a long time with surviving’, and ‘Don’t trust anyone but yourself’ to: ‘Greetings random group! I will blindly put my faith in you and lower my guard! This is my brother Tommy, and I’m Joel! I killed a doctor that was working on a cure!’ It just doesn’t make sense.

    That brings me to Abby. Holy crap, how unlikeable of a character can Naughty Dog make? You expect me to give a crap about this character at all? I love the feeble attempts ND makes to try so hard to get us to sympathize with her. Let’s see things from her P.O.V and look at her reaction to her dad’s death. Mmm, nope, sorry, don’t care. That ‘shock’ fell short by the way. It was super predictable that she was related to the doctor. Every time I was forced to play as her, it was a struggle to keep going. Why the HELL would you force me to play as Joel’s killer? That 10 hour+ ‘side quest’ culminating at the showdown between the WLF and Scars was awful. At no point did I ever want to play as Abby. And why do I care about some stupid power struggle between these two factions? It was incredibly boring. And to think that in the end, Ellie didn’t even get revenge. I understand the whole ‘act of mercy’ angle, and that Ellie told Joel at the end she was ready to try and forgive him, and that she thought of him when she chose not to drown Abby. But WTF. She escaped death how many times to hunt Abby down?! And then she was going to make peace with the fact that she had to let Abby live. But oh wait, she’s having PTSD because Abby is still alive, so she leaves Dina and JJ (whilst knowing that Dina won’t be there when Ellie gets back), so she tracks down Abby AGAIN. And then she’s like...NAH it’s fine, get out of here ya little rascal :) I felt very little satisfaction by the end of the game. Very disappointing.

    And the relationships in this game. I love Ellie, but I didn’t give a crap about her relationship with Dina. The thing about Joel and Ellie’s relationship in the first game that made it so special? It happened organically, overtime, onscreen. They wanted nothing to do with each other at first. But you, the player, got to see their dynamic change gradually throughout the game, and it was interesting. But with Ellie and Dina, they’re just into each other like it’s something we already should’ve known about. The most backstory we get about them is from Ellie’s entries into her journal, which is a poor way to try and build character relationships. The same can be said for Abby and Owen. At no point was I interested in anything they were saying or doing with each other.

    And some smaller grievances. It was really cool in the first game how when Joel pointed his gun, you heard his breathing get much louder, like he was scared and on edge. They got rid of that here which stunk. Also, it was cool at first how when upgrading your gun, they would show you making the addition, but that got old quickly, especially if I was trying to make multiple additions to the same gun. I just felt like I wanted a fast forward button the entire time.
    I also wanted to talk about Tommy running off on his own to go find Abby after Joel died. Uh, why did he do that? Tommy knows Ellie. He knew that she wanted revenge just as badly. He clearly did not want any harm to come to her. Why did he not go with her? Wouldn’t that be the best way to ensure survival?

    In conclusion: The original Last of Us is one of my favorite games. I can’t believe they dropped the ball so hard on Part 2. Abby is awful, unlikeable, and boring. The fact that I had to spend so much time playing as this character was terrible. I replayed 1 more than once at this point. I have 0 interested in ever replaying 2, because there’s so much of the game I would want to skip over. It’s so disheartening to see how bad this all turned out...    … Expand

We waited this to fulfill our longing but you killed main character third hour of game. OK, you can kill main character but it shouldn't be easy like that, eventually he is the master of this environment, era. In addition, you introduced us new characters but really are we supposed to sympathize Abby? She was cruel. We passed all places to kill Abby and we mercied at the end. A decisão de matar o personagem mais querido da forma mais besta/ridícula possível com o agravante de você passar o jogo inteiro, matando todo mundo que cruza o seu caminho, para no final perdoar a mulher e deixar pra lá, faz com que tudo até ali não tenha sentido e deixa uma sensação de vazio. Puzzle sucks, find a rope, throw, climb. The narrative is prolonged by at least 80%, the whole story could be told in 50 minutes. Disregard for fans of the first part.     Graphics are beautiful, music is great, characters are complex... The damn story though.

    In my 20+ years of gaming, I don’t think I’ve ever seen anything like it. The first 2 hours we had to swallow the hard pill that is Joel’s death, brutal and I feel unnecessary so early on in the game, senseless in the way it was done but I pressed on, accepting that this was the plot driver of the game and ready to get revenge as Ellie and actually happy to have Dina by my side. The first 10 hours of gameplay were ok, one of my favourite parts of the game actually was watching Ellie and Dina’s relationship develop as well as appreciating their dynamic much like Ellie and Joel’s in the first game.. however this doesn’t last long.

    I appreciate Ellie’s thirst for revenge as the plot driver, I felt it was strong enough and although I struggled to enjoy playing some parts, I did want to rush to the Aquarium to **** up Abby so it was to my surprise when we don’t find her but then she turns up at the theatre, ****s up Tommy and kills Jesse?! Man I was ready for her to BURN, I had watched the interviews with NaughtyDog and thought I understood why this game was about hate... but oh no was I wrong. Gun pointed on Ellie and fade to black to some **** I have never been so mad at a video game before, NaughtyDog had me HATING this game with 15 hours still to play.

    **** Abby and **** her arms. **** her backstory, her friends and any other associated **** I did not care one bit that her dad was the surgeon or that her arms are top dog in the WLF. I could’ve gotten over all of this if we only had to play with her for like an hour or so but half of the game.... HALF OF THE ****ING GAME PLAYING AS THE **** WHO KILLED JOEL, WHOSE ONLY PERSONALITY TRAIT IS ARM DAY?!?! Those 10 hours were the most painful to play, I genuinely did not enjoy one moment of it. If NaughtyDog wanted us to experience a new character and explore new storylines which tie into Ellie’s then they should’ve literally picked any other character. It feels like they asked us to play as David from the first game after everything he did to Ellie - violated is the word I’m searching for here.

    Not only was the gameplay painful and unrelenting whilst playing as Abby but what felt worse was I had no emotional connection to her other than hate. I did not want her to live and was angered by every cut scene. I did like the introduction of the Scar kids though, Yana and Lev was it? They made the gameplay a little bit more bearable as I painfully waited for the words, SEATTLE DAY 3 to appear on my screen.

    One bit I will admit was cool was going to the island, during the thunderstorm as the WLF attacked the Scars and being involved in some of the fighting. It felt deliciously dramatic as everything unfolded and was on fire... only to once again be let down by Yanas death followed by NaughtyDog forcing some uncharacteristic kind of sibling/paternal bond between Abby and the newly orphaned Lev. Let’s skip past some **** and talk about the theatre fight scene. It was cruel of Naughty Dog to make us play as Abby while she beat the **** out of Ellie. Cruel to make us watch pregnant Dina be impaled with an arrow. In my opinion, Tommy should’ve killed Lev and then they should’ve switched us back to Ellie to finish of Abby but NO that would’ve been too kind to the audience wouldn’t it. The disappointment just settled in my stomach as I realised Abby got to walk away after 18+ hours of either chasing her or playing as her. Even after the 10 hours of playing as her I still wanted her to die.

    So the next very odd but momentarily wholesome small bit of gameplay of Ellie and Dina with the baby at the house. Finally I thought, finally Ellie has some peace, the secluded house, Dina and the baby to look after, sure a little PTSD here and there but who doesn’t have that in that world right? I really was hoping for end credits to pop up at any moment, Ellie had some peace I didn’t need more than that but man did I cry and beg right alongside Dina for Ellie to stay after Tommy asked her to go back out for revenge.

    The whole story/gameplay after that felt so forced. Abby and Lev searching for Fireflies and Ellie chasing them in California? Basically shooting through a whole concentration camp INJURED just to find this **** only to have a pathetic punch up and then... letting her go. Man I ****ing hated playing the remaining 5 hours more than I did playing the 10 with Abby, something I did not think was possible at the time. The one silver lining was the flashback with Joel at the end, my heart felt warm knowing he didn’t die thinking Ellie hated him.

    **** NaughtyDog, you should’ve got your writers from Uncharted 4 on this but instead looks like you got someone from Ubisoft to destroy Ellie and Joel’s story.    … Expand

The characters are laughably stupid... walking into a room full of armed strangers, leaving a map behind that the enemy can use to find you, ambushing your enemy from behind with a stick of wood rather than just shooting them in the back, etc etc. Also the Abby characterAn absolutely horrible story.     This game is a perfect example of destroying a whole universe and your reputation. Let's cut to the chase.
    Joel's death, the way it happened. It's ok to kill a main character. But the way you do that and curcustances ARE important. That scene wasn't even horrible/shocking/whatever devs wanted to show us, it was pathetic. Why did you do that? Just to shock the audience? Well, killing a main character does not make you a great writer. To give Ellie motivation so story can go further? But the revenge didn't happen. So what's the point? Kick off the MAIN character at the very beginning like he is nothing. Like he is not even secondary character - devs represent him as tertiary character. Even secondary characters in video games (the first game, for example) have much more respect to them. I still can't believe this happened. The way you did that is such a disrespect to a character and story at all.
    Playing as Abby half of the game. Really? This game is ALL about Joel and Ellie, so why should player even play as her HALF of the time? No one even cares about her. Especially if this character beat a beloved character to death. And then, devs wanted us to sympathize her? It's pretty stupid.
    The ending. The ending is the worst I've ever seen in my life. Just imagine - Abby has beaten Joel to death. Ellie chased her down. To forgive her. Wow, how? What was the point? To prove revenge is bad? And now Ellie has nothing. I'm just speechless.
    Marketing. You showed the audience the scene with Joel in one of the trailers. And then you replace him with secondary character? Really? "Subvert expectations"?
    The hate about the game. Go to reddit/youtube/twitch if you want to know the real reason why all the people are upset about the game. The REAL reviews. Don't developers even see the REAL situation, the real failure? Such a spit to the original game. You wanted a strong woman? You had one in your own game - her name was Tess. Another one? Boom - Marlene. Now people hate feminism and anything related to it even more. Even LGBTQ+ community downvoted this game because of wrong representations. Everyone is losing with this game. Devs, players, LGBTQ+ community, females, males, black people, white - everyone.
    This game is called "The Last Of Us Part II", right? Then, it is supposed to be about the same characters, story, right? Because it has "Part II" it the title. But no. The only few things that have something in general with the first game are - title, flashbacks. That is all. It is not even close to the first one.
    The only reason why I don't put 0/10 is the graphics and the environment design. That is all. That is the only good thing that I can say about this game - "It just looks pretty". I just want to say that they could have taken this tale in any of many directions they could. But the one they chose out of those were the worst of the lot. Be warned coming in that the tale told here will cause your stomach and emotion to steer in all different directions. As you may know by now, Joel deserves better, I mean in any other way, I was all for Joel going out; but not like this. An agenda that did a deservice to the original, I mean why?!     LoU2 is the greatest action movie I've watched this decade. As a video game is awful. And the first one is also way overrated as a video game. You should be making movies Druckmann, I really enjoyed the story and YOUR characters. Also, amazing work by the graphics team. There are some impressive graphics for such an underpowered console.

    People say that those who dislike this game are hard-right conservatives that hate the idea of homosexuality, feminism, and the idea of strong female characters. I assure you that the reason why the user reviews are extremely low has nothing to do with this.
    THE problem with this game is the story. In the first game (The Last of Us) Joel is extremely cautious, cold, calm and collected, never let his guard down, and never gave any information to people he did not trust. However within the first hour of the game Joel tells strangers where they live, their real names and to top it all off, he trusts them right off that bat.
    This is not the Joel we learned to know of in the first game of the series. It is sad to say, and it seems like to me that the developers decided to throw out the development of the story for a single message... ("Revenge is bad, it will do no good for you and will consume you").
    Don't get me wrong, the visuals of the game are insanely well done, and I love the new intricacies regarding the overall gameplay, however, this game is a story-driven game and the story doesn't really have anything to show. You don't really feel like you go anywhere.
    I found no enjoyment in playing or watching the story... why would the developers make you play as a character while you beat the crap out of the main character that you've known to love with another "main" character that you've learned to hate. I just can't see what they were going for here, and neither can the other 40,000 negative reviews.

    The story,however,is what the first game did best, and what people were expecting from this game,too. I can't believe I am writing this on a naugbty dog game,developers responsible for the uncharted series and the first last of us,but the writing and the story here feels underwhelming at best.The characters,who are brilliantly acted,are poorly written. And how they treat joel is not justified at any point throughout the game.The new characters introduced are just not fleshed out.
    You don't get to spend too much time with them,which means no emotional connection,which means you really don't care about the stakes.
    And the absolute nonsensical decision to let you play as Abby,the girl who kills joel at thr start,just does not make sense.
    They tried hard to make you sympathize with this character,but throughout her section,the chances are that you will not develop any sort of connection with her.Thats because,in my opinion,the last of us has always been about Joel and Ellie.Not just random groups of survivors.Most people will not care about this random group of people you are introduced to.They wanna play as Ellie,and progress as her.The whole section of Abby feels like an 11-12 hours of tideous side quests...and don't get me started on the island part.That island section was put there just for political agendas.
    Nothing more.Adds nothing to the story,and goes on for far,far,FAR too long.And the game acts like you give one bit of damn about whats going on with these characters.

    The story is the worst in the history of gaming: you kill the protagonist and play the murderer with no explanation and you also play the daughter-figure of the victim, whose primary purpose is revenge. In the end you don't get revenge though, and the storytortures you with unskippable filler just like a low budget anime. It is almost like the story was made bad on purpose...

The failed attempt of the second half of the game and the ending make it unbearable, it even ruined the first entry for me, I'll never be able to go back to it. I had a Dawn of Justice flashbacks during the cutscene. The themes explored are presented so bluntly and often, that in the end you're asking yourself what was this game about? It couldn't be that obvious and left unanswered, because the cliched answer can't be it in The Last of Us? Plus there's a serious case of false advertising it, calling it Ellie's story and naming her the protagonist without mentioning anything else is just plain wrong, it's just MGS2 but bad.
    Other than that, the game has beautiful world, minor improvements to the combat, better levels than the first entry. I think people praising AI just confuse aggressive AI with good AI, since it's still dumb and enemies will line up for you. The score also deserves praise. It would really be fine if it wasn't a sequel to The Last Of Us, like 6/7 out of 10. And please watch the podcast about Neil, Troy and Ashley talking about it.     I love the environment, acting (not all), and seems a little outdated for a 2020 game with the mechanics they present. The story first half was great, but you can see when it's starting to get dull, where stuff was just thrown together.     La historia fue terrible. Horrenda, horrible escritura. Poco desarrollo de los personajes, estaban tomando decisiones completamente fuera del personaje desde el principio. Lo que los definió antes, se ha ido, estas son diferentes personas con sus caras. Hicieron cosas solo para impulsar la historia y crear situaciones. Las personas cambian, pero destrozaron el núcleo de quiénes eran y todo lo que hizo que el juego fuera memorable.

    La historia en general fue una escritura perezosa. Tenían una lista de lecciones de la sociedad para golpear, y luego crearon una historia para mostrar esos puntos. El juego siguió dando conferencias con discursos, escenas y situaciones descaradamente obvias. Una y otra vez, debes aprender esta idea, como un vecino fastidioso que nunca pediste. El juego te obligaba a tragar las creencias y las posiciones del desarrollador del juego. Arruinó el juego.

    Por último, NINGÚN juego debería tratar activamente de hacerte sentir mal contigo mismo y con todo. Se sintió como un trabajo pesado en la miseria. Terminas odiando a todos en el juego.

    No lo recomiendo. Y odio a Neil D por arruinar un juego legendario y que amé con esta basura de secuela.    … Expand

Not only this game developers and social media treats us like bots, but the game itself did a huge ton of the worst plot choices it could have done.     actually my first ever review probably in the internet. This game (particularly the story) is a disappointment, bad writing, characters feel empty, and the ending is probably one of the worst i ever experienced in video games. *beep beep bot comment beep beep*

    This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. i have not played this game and i will never play it even if someone offered me this game for free , i watched some of my favorite streamers playing it and the story sucks , if you are a fan of the first game story than you will hate this one , the game start all fine and dandy , than a new character shows up and kills one of the main characters from the first game , than you are forced to play as this new character for the most of the game's story ! who thought this was a good Idea ???????… Expand

    The first one was brilliant. I purposely avoided spoilers. Couldn't finish this one the direction they took it was tragic. Devastated LGBTQ & PCness is being rammed down our throat's by people with a personal agenda ruining video games first BFV no this.
    To add insult to injury was reminded of my dad's death on Father's Day no less.
    GUTTED.

    This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. It is the most beautiful game I have ever played. The opening scene alone is worth a 10/10. But looks alone can only take a game so far . Here are some of the problems I observed while playing the game:

    1) it just way too dark - the story of Last of us used to be about hope even in the bleakest of times , but the sequel has completely forgotten that and made it a half broken story about revenge and most of all the story was so dark that since I have finished the game I don't even want to look at my PS4.

    2) the story has a lot of narrative flaws - I mean a lot 3) combat is the same as the previous game - basically they just copied the previous games combat with a few minor improvements

    Pro tip: when you fight Ellie just let her kill you 10 - 20 time's it's the most satisfying thing in the game

    On an unrelated note for those who have played the : I bet jole don't like golf    … Expand

The pacing is GOD AWFUL the characters are bland, flat and one dimensional. The story has an extremely bad and unsatisfying conclusion. The 4 rating is only for the visuals. I could not connect with the characters in any way. Disappointed. The gameplay has 0Sorry. I could not give this game anything else. Graphics are gorgeous, the atmosphere and animations are on point, the gameplay is like the first one with some improvements here and there, the AI sometimes can be downright stupid, the accesibility options are a great addition, but the story...my god......so first of all joel's death, i have no problem with him dying, i have a problem with how he dies, like he just gives his name to a bunch of strangers and then they kill him, we're talking about a man that ran over a guy just because he didn't trust him...the death was idiotic, they are trying so hard to make previously estableshed characters, they try to make abby "likeble" via cheap manipulation tactics yet she shows no remorse for killing anyone unlike ellie, and the ending.......so you do all that **** kill so many people and dogs, for nothing?!?!?!?! it has some good moments like the flashbacks with joel and ellie, or ellie in the music store but the overall plot is just a bad fanfiction, and i saw better fanfictions for this game than what we got.
    i'll give it 4/10, if it will ever have a multiplayer then 6.    … Expand

    The Last of Us Part II is the high point of the PlayStation 4. The plot is controversial, but the game is the incredibly addictive adventure of Ellie, from which it is impossible to pull away from the opening and to the very end.

But if you try and manage to accept the subliminal and not so subtle messages as a fact that the world has gone awry and that people have the need to have somewhere or someone to belong to as their own way out, then... You will witness the boundaries of gaming expand. You will witness a true masterpiece.
