This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The criticism this game is getting is literally focused entirely on the fact that there are microtransactions that make your one-shot-and-I'm-dead soldier into a two-shots-and-I'm dead soldier. Like...come on, guys. A 0 score? Dice busted their ass to make sure this game was something that you could legitimately enjoy if you like Star Wars. EA made their adjustments, and we now have a fun game that's being held back by a slightly annoying progression system. To everyone whining about being unable to play Luke or Vader, you do understand that by completing the campaign and maybe, I dunno, two or three games of galactic conquest, you're basically given enough credits to purchase one or the other? Dice and Battlefront 2 are unfortunately the targets for everyone's hate for microtransactions--but the game as it stands is a blast to play, functions perfectly, has a campaign that gives you the chance to try the heroes you can take out into multiplayer, and screw around in the Star Wars universe. It's exactly what it needed to be. Expand

Great graphics and gun play, story is surprisingly well fit into the universe, the arcade mode being only local co-op was a disappointment.
The multiplayer is a bit unbalanced as well but i'm sure it will be adjusted.
This game is fun, but sadly all the reviews are for the loot boxes, and not the game play.

I still bought this game despite the controversy because I am a huge star wars fan, but now I see the problem. The progression system was built to entice you/your children to spend money on loot boxes. It is aggravatingly slow to accomplish the challenges in the game so that you get annoyed and keep making purchases of a couple bucks. There are serious competitive advantages for spending money - which means this game has zero competitive integrity. Right now microtransactions have been turned off temporarily, but since the progression system was built around microtransactions, the entire thing is broken.

To summarize, great game design and gameplay, but terrible execution by EA's execs on progression. Ruined an otherwise fantastic game.

I can understand EA maybe getting a bad rap, but Star Wars Battlefront 2? This game is really good. The single player campaign has an amazing story which brings to light some of the things the empire and rebellion did after the death of the emperor. The little bit of the multiplayer that I have played so far has been really good as well. While there are fewer modes of gameplay, the different eras in SW history with its different factions is a refreshing change. I understand that the micro-transactions and the loot boxes were a bad idea and not good for the economy of the game, but the game as it stands now has been a ton of fun. Expand

    Hey Guys,

I believe that this game is gorgeous. It looks stunning, sounds amazing and feels like Star Wars. It immerses you in one of the 3 epic ages of Star Wars history: Clone Wars, Rise and Fall of the Empire and the New Order vs. the Resistance. Hey Guys,

I believe that this game is gorgeous. It looks stunning, sounds amazing and feels like Star Wars. It immerses you in one of the 3 epic ages of Star Wars history: Clone Wars, Rise and Fall of the Empire and the New Order vs. the Resistance.

In order to understand this game let us compare it with the last installment of the series and take a look at how much DICE (&EA) listened to our hopes for this game:

Lets look at what STAR WARS BATTLEFRONT 2 does better:

    - offers a by far wider variety in planets and locations (from all 3 Ages)
    - includes 6 unique Star Wars Factions (with their own vehicles etc.)
    - has a class system that was wished for from the community --> gives a true feeling of Star Wars IMO
    - maps seem to have a little more variety to them and the small cutscenes actually make me feel like im
    in the battles themselves
    - has a single player campaign (average but OK I guess (would give it a 6.5/10 for solo campaigns) -->
also gives you a lot of rewards for multiplayer)
    - allows for more customization in classes with guns / attachments
    - has on paper the better star card system than the last one (if you leave aside the p2w aspect)
    - has NO season pass!!!

But what does this game do worse than the last one?

    - Microtransactions = EA`s greed for the Star Wars license
    - From a point onwards slow progression (they want to make us buy Crystals)

In terms of graphics, soundtrack and map design this game is on par with the first installment if not maybe better.

Let us talk about unlocks: DICE already decreased the price of the heroes. After 6h story and 6h multiplayer I am currently sitting on 43.000 Credits and 300 Parts. This is enough to unlock Darth Vader + Luke + Leia / or open almost 11 Trooper-Crates and uprgade some star cards.
In my opinion this is more than enough for a good start into multiplayer.

Don´t get me wrong. I think that the grind starts after you spend your first credits. In order to unlock something afterwards it takes hours in game. This is something that needs to be addressed ASAP!

--- NOW: Why do I believe this game is better than the last one? ---

In my opinion we got half a game for $60 for the first Star Wars Battlefront (2015). The game was lackluster and was not fun after 50 hours of gameplay. After you sink your teeth into that game you feel like there was nothing to unlock, nothing more to do, nothing to play it for anymore. It was fun for around 40 hourse before realizing it was just a hull of what is was intended to be.
This game at least let`s you grind for something and makes you stay longer playing and wanting that new hero, unlockable and so on.

The soul of the first game`s experience was ripped out and was sold to us for $50 more -- SEASON PASS.

Star Wars BATTLEFRONT 2 gives you practically all the content from the last game + season pass + 2 completely untouched factions in the last game from day one as well as a Single player Campaign.

I therefore would rather choose the microtransactions than the season pass because you can still grind for all items in game but not for a season pass unlock in the first installment of the series.

In my opinion SWBF2 is a far superior game to the 2015 version of SW Battlefront.

    DO NOT MISUNDERSTAND:

I completely understand the hate this game got from the community. I agree that a game that is full price should neither include a season pass, nor microtransactions of any kind. For a completely fair user experience their should be no shortcuts allowed for any player.
Everything should be unlocked through an achievement system of some kind that is fun and enjoyable to play through.

    Let`s see what happens next.
I would rate this game after around 12h of gameplay a 7/10. Maybe even higher if they fix the microtransactions p2w aspect.

The game is great, gameplaywise and graphics are great.

But lootboxes in $60 game, which require about $2000 to unlock everything or over 150 DAYS of play time is BS.
Even worse is the fact that those lootboxes contain stuff that make you better, like 25% better turning on space ships and higher damage.

Don't buy this game to send a message to EA.

these loot crates are not funny at all.
Even with tuned off transactions there are a lot of players with much better staff (like 1-2 epic cards) and this completely ruin the game, just can't imagine what will be in game when this transactions will be available. I can not recommend this game to someone else, because there is nothing to do without additional purchases.

Star Wars Battlefront II provides a greater ambition than the previous installment. It has powerful war scenes, a brand new single player mode, and shows a much more magnificent Star Wars Universe. But just like the Jedi should be ware of the dark side of the Force, this game also meets some similar situations, such as beleaguered microtransaction elements and character growth problems. The first 10 hours of this game is full of surprises; however, the further you play this game, the more disappointed you will get.
