Congratulations to Capcom, they made a real resident evil after more than 17 years, I thought the game would be back to action, something like revelations 2, but the gameplay is just like the classic games, just changing the camera that is in the back of the protagonist as in modern games, the tension that there was in the first games is back, 10 out of 10

Phenomenal. I loved the care and devotion that was put into this effort. This was a devoted effort toward that classic game, and it shows. For once in a long time, I actually am wishing there were DLC for this so that I could continue exploring in the engine that they've created. Expanding upon the lore, would be awesome here...

I played RE7 last year, and this year I decided on a whim to play this one since I liked RE7 so well and found myself interested in the rest of the RE universe.

And I have to say, I'm glad I did.

This was a hell of a game. Difficult, but not head-bangingly, teeth-grindingly so; it's achievable with patience and strategic use of items and weaponry. It had good horror- I'll be seeing Mr. X in my sleep from now on, thanks Capcom- and I really enjoyed Leon and Claire. I also liked that you could play from one perspective each.

Also, though I know this runs contrary to popular fan sentiment, I was glad they decided not to do the spiders in the sewers. That would have put me off the game (I have bad arachnophobia, and my fear is directly proportional to the size of the spider), and I was relieved to see they'd replaced it with other monsters.

The graphics were beautiful, the music was great, and overall I just really liked this one. I sincerely hope Capcom remakes the other RE games; I've already got a few of the PS4... Re-releases? I forget the word for when they adapt a game for a new system but don't actually remake it. Anyway, I'm getting into the rest of the series now, and I'd love to see remakes and new stuff from the developers.

Unfortunately, we're a long way from Shinji Mikami's masterstroke with his legendary Resident Evil for Nintendo GameCube in 2002 (Best Remake Ever). But Resident Evil 2 Remake has at least the merit of being "THE SURVIVAL-HORROR" and "THE REMAKE" of the generation.

For the comparison with its original version, there is unfortunately no photo (at least for the old ones), Resident Evil 2 of 1998 is a tone above thanks to a better control and an indescribable aura (monsters, scenario B, the lab, the sewers, the atmosphere, the music, the fixed camera, the pre-calculated render etc).

Anyway, congratulations to you Capcom, it's the best Resident Evil since Shinji Mikami's departure, vivement le Remake du 3 and Code Veronica.

The graphics and gameplay are mostly stunning and excellent. This is top-tier quality.

The downsides are where it gets interesting. Some of them have been carried over due to the age of the original game. For example, there is much backtracking to open doors once you've obtained the relevant keys etc. In modern-day gaming this comes across as rather repetitive and lazy, cheaply increasing the length of the game.

Secondly, there is an invincible enemy or two who randomly appears and stalks you throughout a large part of the game. At first this is quite startling and unnerving in the fun sense, however it quickly becomes grating, as he can also cause you to backtrack a lot to escape or waste precious ammo in stalling him until you can escape. This is also surprising as Resident Evil 7 had the same issue and I'm surprised they didn't learn from that.

Finally, the zombies themselves, or specifically their impressive and frustrating ability to absorb bullets like raindrops. It makes some sense to discourage us from fighting every single zombie, however it also becomes tedious and frustrating that I have to expend 6 or 7 bullets to ensure a zombie is permanently neutralised. This is not practical and is not enjoyable.

While I was playing this an observer noted that "it needs more action" and I think they were right. There is too much banal content that was accepted 20 years ago due to the limitations of technology. Perhaps Capcom did not want to stray too far from the source material, but I'm a firm believer in rose-tinted glasses needing to be removed. I could have enjoyed this game so much more and I am glad it was a gift because it really is not worth the launch price. Wait until it is £20 or less.

Rethinking the second part is the best thing that happened to the Resident Evil universe. After the failure of the 7th part, Resident Evil 2 is just a breath of fresh air. Unfortunately, I was not familiar with the original, but I really liked this restart. At the moment I passed the game 2 times.
    Minuses.
    * The first minus refers to the scenario of the game - this is "excessive donation." I was already bored to watch the characters say to each other: "Leave me, go away." Somewhere it was appropriate. For example, at the moment when Leon sheltered Ada from bullets, it is appropriate here, because Leon began to lose consciousness and thought he was dying. But, unfortunately, these phrases were almost everywhere.
*The second minus refers to a small amount of memorable music. Only two music that I remember is the song in the credits, in script B and in the room to save. Everything. Music from the original does not count.
*Russian localization. SoftClub you are just "gods". Capcom, please do not pay these idlers and ignoramuses money for localizing the game.
    The strengths of the game!
+Story line. For this genre of game the plot is excellent. A bunch of new stories that are either made from scratch or supplemented. Even a love scene has been added. And that's good, because the characters look alive, but you don't have to go too far.
+Graphics and everything connected with it. Capcom simply made divine detailing of the smoldering of cigarettes, the burning of flammable liquids, sparks and pieces of meat.
+Animation of characters and other things. Looking at the characters, sometimes you think you are watching a movie, although there are places where the animation is “lame”, but in general it is great, especially the animation of burgers. :)

(Presented minuses did not affect the final assessment, since these are mainly mini shoals)

My main gripe is how Leon and Claire’s plotlines overlap kind of sloppily (i.e. In Leon’s campaign you see Claire at a fence outside of the station, but in Claire’s campaign Leon is the one outside of the station - so that kind of ruins the continuity) where campaigns differ only by access to a few rooms, weapon loadout, and one ally sub-quest. The zombies are more difficult to kill and you can’t exploit the ol’ infinite knife anymore (at least not by default).

In response to several of the negative reviews, I don’t understand the problems. Yes, the zombies take a ton of bullets. They’re zombies. Who cares if you used 12 bullets and it’s not dead? No, you can’t shoot from cover or exploit any stupid arena-shooter features. Go play that atrocity RE6, or the slightly-better RE5 and enjoy quicktime events and “zombies” that leer like Yakuza henchmen, do dirtbike wheelies and tote AK’s. Yes it sucks when Tyrant chases you. It’s annoying to say the least, but it’s also SCARY which is the point because you don’t know exactly where he is and he will always be stalking you during certain parts of the game. And to the purists, screw the canon. The original plots and dialogue were ridiculous to begin with. Why be offended that this awesome game’s laughable plot is only 90% consistent with the laughable plot from 20 years ago? The important thing is the fear factor. /end rant

I also did not care for the DLCs that CAPCOM delivered even if they were for free, they were just mindless run & shoot games (and the game is not designed for that type of play, so they feel clumsy), I played them once, was not impressed and have not played them again. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This "re-imagination" or "reboot/remake hybrid" of RE2, happens almost in an alternative universe of the franchise, so we could basically say that it is like a "Resident Evil 2: Shattered Memories", and that was not what the developers of CRAPCOM promised us in 2015, even in CRAPCOM's click bait video, it was the word REMAKE in the title of the 2015 version, which is not even present in the 2019 version for an obvious reason!!!
    -Now some examples-:
*If a person still lives, but was infected, completely succumb to the infection of the t-Virus takes about 11 days canonically in Resident Evil, and depending on the metabolism, and health of the same, the time may minimally vary a few days, in the case "The Keeper", a character from RE1//REMAKE, was a little over the 11 days, but all this is already contradicted by what happens at the beginning of this game, where the controlled protagonist comes across someone who appears to have recently been bitten inside the store of a gas station, but shortly after, this one becomes a zombie like just because.
*John Clemens(canonical character) is not even mentioned by Ada Wong or Annette Birkin, Ada also does not have the photo of them both as a couple in her inventory, and the relationship of them had already been alleged in RE1(original and REMAKE), including in one of the puzzles of those games.
*Enemies like the Plant 43 or Ivy, that even appear in other games canonically connected to the original RE2, like the on original scenarios of RE: The Darkside Chronicles(by this I mean those who are officially canonical) with the Ivy+YX, which are an improved version of the Plants 43 from the RE2 original, which means that the original Plants 43 are also canonical.
*The Mother Plant, which is the progenitor of the Plants 43 is also a canonical, since it appears in RE: Outbreak and being officially named in the same way too; There is only one giant Plant 43 in the re-imagination, which could be said that the same replaced the Mother Plant, but this would contradict what was established by both The Darkside Chronicles and Outbreak.
*In the canonical scenarios of RE: The Umbrella Chronicles, Ada is confirmed to have been attacked, and knocked out by Mr. X, which is something that never happens in the re-imagination of RE2, either in the 1st Run or the 2nd Run of the same.

    Resident Evil 2 (2019) #DashReviews

Capcom has been on a massive win streak after making the RE engine and the critically acclaimed Resident Evil 7. Capcom has finally realized why people are fans on the RE franchise in the first place and are starting to put the series back on track. With the power of the RE engine,
Capcom decided to remake the 1998 classic, Resident Evil 2. Will this remake be as good the original or is it going to be a remake not worth playing through?

Much like its 1998 counterpart, you play as 2 characters, Leon Kennedy and Clair Redfield. Both are trying to make it through the virus infected Raccoon city to achieve their goals. Leon is a rookie cop just trying to make his way after finding the police station he was stationed at is abandoned and Clair is looking for her brother among the chaos. The story is very simplistic and can be very cheesy at times. This works in its favor since it is a nice homage to the original. Beautiful cutscenes and decent voice acting make the story of this game better than the 1998 original.

This is one of the best survival horror game to date thanks to its gameplay. Ditching the tank controls of the past for a free moving camera and over the shoulder aiming. The gameplay can be super intense, from managing your ammo and items, solving well-made puzzles that can be a bit easy at times, and from running away from enemies when you have nothing left. The new gameplay mechanics helps ramp up the horror aspect to an 11 and completely surpasses the original. My only complaint is that the zombie AI can be wonky at times. Getting stuck in doors or on a side of a wall. This is a minor complaint since it does not happen often. This game is a new standard for survival horror games in the future.

The soundtrack from this game is superb. Many chilling tracks that amp up the horror that the game is trying to convey. The sound design that accompanies this soundtrack is just as chilling. This game looks amazing thanks to the realism that Capcom is able to achieve with the RE engine. Gameplay and cutscenes run at a buttery smooth 60 FPS with little to no drops in performance. The fact that this game looks good, sounds good and run flawlessly at the same time makes this game a technical marvel.

Resident Evil 2 (2019) gets the foundation on the PS1 classic and makes a game that surpasses the original. This game is a beautiful amalgamation of everything that makes a great survival horror while honoring the original work. If you never played a RE game before, I can’t recommend this game enough as it’s a good starting point. If you have played a RE game before or even the original RE 2, this is still a must buy game.

    Pros:
    +Simple and Fun Story
    +Great Horror Gameplay
    +RE Engine is Beautiful
    +Amazing Soundtrack and Sound Design

    Cons:
    -AI is wonky at times

There is just one thing the developer could have done better.
After playing both Leon (first) then Claire, I wished there story lines would tie in more together and would built more on each others actions.

For example, why I extinguished the fire on the helicopter with Leon and in the second playtrough with Claire as well? I am aware it happened in the original RE2 too, but as the developer mentioned, RE2 is more of a reimagination than a remake, so I think they could have figured another way here.

Beside of this I enjoyed this game to its fullest and can recommend it, can't wait to play RE3 Remake.

It plays and looks great but, in my opinion, never betray the original feel and tone. Though some might argue that the clunky controlls and cinematic camera angles of the original are a necessary part of the survival horror experience. Both of these aspects are dropped in this much modernized re-make and therefore combat feels much quicker and addmitedly slightly less terrifying. The ammo is however still a very limited resource and when I say that the shooting feels more action oriented I don't mean that you can let the bullets do all the thinking for you but it feels and controls really great when you do. Also what terror is lost during the shooting is made up for during the still super atmospheric exploration and puzzle solving. There is yet again a very good balance to be found here and fans of the original and newcommers alike will both have a great time playing this excellent game. Expand

Disclaimer: even though I'll be harsh with the game, it's still a very good one and it deserves all the praise it gets. On top of that, I also played the original one back on the ps1 but more to that later

So, Resident Evil 2 finally has a remake and in the literal sense of the word: just like RE1 it got many new features, new weapons, sub-weapons and the layout of the RPD station has been drastically changed so that even for those like us who can remember the game step by step will be surprised with the changes.

The game controls à la resident evil 4 and that was a great idea: RE4 was fantastic thanks to the third person perspective and the shooting was satisfying for that reason, and the fact that you can aim while walking and also enter doors without loading, it's all a nice touch.

Most of the enemies of the series have returned with even strong zombies now. dogs, lickers, Mr x and the good old Birkin who tries to become a one punch cosplayer. Just kidding: he's more aggressive than ever and he'll be a pain to deal with.

I could go on with how much the game has changed but I do have a lot of issues too and after finishing the game several times, both scenarios, and an S+ on hardcore (The rocket launcher is amazing!) I have to say that while the game is definitely improved, it's also a chore to deal with.

Let's start with the zombies: they're tougher now, which is great, however, headshots do jack now! Why? In the original, the reason why you couldn't aim was that you couldn't aim! You were stuck in place and only able to aim at a 45% degree angle! It made sense if you couldn't headshot (although the shotgun "could" headshot if close enough).
in the remake you can freely aim anywhere on the zombie but despite that your damage will be the same, head or feet or whatever, and this is sad because the zombies are MARVELOUSLY animated and they interact flawlessly with the environment: they can crawl on tables, fall from stairs, their limbs can be torn apart and more. I mean it's a tactic to basically shoot to their knees as it stuns them! However, headshots should at least do the most damage and the only way to reliably one-shot zombies is to score a critical hit. Or use the shotty/magnum

The weird thing, however? These are the hardest enemies in the game! Lickers? Just walk past them. Dogs? 3-4 shots and they're down. Mr. X? he's so easy to dodge and you're safe in certain areas anyway! The sewer monsters? Annoying but easy to dodge once you know the pattern. Plant zombies? Tough but you don't want to kill them only stun them. Even boss fights are a joke in comparison to zombies! And yet zombies have no weak points. It's no wonder the RPD is the hardest part of the game.

Speaking of enemies, I HATED Mr. X: he was the biggest nuisance of the entire game and I can't believe people are actually scared by him. For starters, he looks less threatening than the original version and secondly he's so easy to avoid that the only reason he'll give you pain, is when you need to do puzzles. Yeah that's it: he's annoying when you need to get puzzles done, but besides that? It's a joke really.
What a letdown: from a legitimately scary enemy that in the original you had the anticipation and the fear of "when" he'll come to you, in the remake he's just another "stalker" enemy that stalks you too much - he can hear your gunshots - and only serves to cause annoyance. PLEASE CAPCOM DON'T DO THIS FOR NEMESIS PLEASE, MAKE HIM ACTUALLY SCARY AND NOT THIS PITIFUL EXCUSE OF A HORROR TROPE.

And lastly, too many swear words. No, I'm not one of those don't worry but I can't say the dialogues are brilliant.
In the original, there weren't many swearings (or any at all?) and all dialogues were about campy and corny lines delivered to make it look like a cheesy gore movie...and it worked! These lines helped lighten the mood because they were so hilariously bad it's amazing. But in the remake? You'll see so much **** that you'll get bored and feel annoyed more than anything because they take everything too seriously and it's really hard to follow. I get it, it's a remake, but the original trilogy was a campy horror game and while I don't expect the same dialogues at least make them sound less edgy! It's silly but the whole wrong reason!
Oh and Claire looks terrible and I mean it: she looks like a cosplayer who plays the role of Claire. Leon is fine and so everyone else, especially like the new look of Ada, Ben, Annette and Irons. Thankfully you can swap some costumes.

Overall, I recommend this game because it's very good, it's extremely well made, it's detailed and it's basically what I hoped after RE4 came: a dark, scary game with a great setting. And thanks to the remake's changes it'll be all fresh like in '98!

PS: shame on you capcom for forcing us to buy the soundtrack for the original game! It was only 3 bucks but come on! Nickle and diming already? At least the '98 models are free...

Thanks reviewers for wasting my 60$.
Graphics are horrible on ps4 pro.
Only thing you do is trying to get headshots.
You will end finding solutions to puzzles online as it is so boring going trough every single peace of paper laying around. Zzzzzzzzzzz

I don't really have anything bad to say about this game other than, personally, I feel like the leap that this game made to the more refined generation of consoles and gameplay makes for a bit more to be desired from a hardcore fan's perspective. Otherwise, near perfection!

This game is pretty incredible. This is how you remake a classic game. Just like Shadow of the Colossus showed us last year. These classic games are timeless because they don't rely on the biggest open world with a bunch a crappy collectables. I suggest this game to horror enthusiasts and old fashion gaming lovers. Resident Evil 7 is much better in my opinion more scary, more action and more fair.

Like games of PSX and Ps2 era it does not try to extend your playthrough by repetitive missions and artificial enemies increase. I prefer 5 hours of very high quality content than 50 hours of mediocre open world game. I will return to this game probably every year from now like I do with RE4. For me its instant classic.

This game is amazing! Exchanging tight corridors and fixed cameras for darkness and eerie audio was a wise choice . I legitimately felt afraid...mostly of Mr. X and his stomping around the mansion. Visually RE2 looks astounding, I love how the zombies fall apart depending on where you shoot them. The replay value is a little limited but the DLC might improve that minor flaw. I appreciateThis game is amazing! The absolute remake of a timless classic

the only reason I am giving this a '9' is that it is infact, a remake, and not an entirely original work --

The gameplay is the best the series has ever seen and the zombies never felt and scarier; the physics are also top notch

    RE Engine is a beast.

Not a bad game. Graphics are great, the first play-through is REALLY tense and stressful just how RE 2 (PS1) was. The problem with the game mostly comes in terms of replay ability. In my honest opinion after you finish the first 8 hour campaign you don't have much incentive to play it again. Sure it unlocks a "2nd run" and says to get the "true ending" you must complete it.

Resident Evil 2 is a wonderful recreation of a believed original that, not only recaptures the glory of that game, but also improves upon it from a visual and gameplay standpoint. All in all, don’t miss out on this one.
