This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. As a big fan on R&C for many years,I had big hopes for this game.

And it's alright. And I don't have many issues, the biggest ones are the story and writing.
So, first the negatives, you know what the positives are.

Graphics are amazing and astonishing, performance is good, gameplay is good and it feels like a remake like it was marketed. Even though there aren't new weapons for someone like me who has played all the games, old ones are still good, there are weapons from the first game to the newest, all "remastered". The upgrade system is familiar to us old players, weapons get stronger the more you use it and raritanium is used to upgrade them. That is another good thing. Holo-Cards are fun thing to see all this old characters and weapons from the earlier games and there are good easter eggs to find. For those alone, I'd give it a 9/10.

What tears the game down is the story. For the newcomers it might be good, even great, but for me, I can't help it but to compare it to the original. And when I do, it has issues.

New characters are bland and boring. Aside from Qwark, who is his usual self, the new galactic rangers are just dull. I can't remember them and they don't add anything to the story. The only reason they are just so the Sony can hire big-league actors to play them in the movie. And the idea of Ratchet joining the Galactic Rangers just doesn't work. It takes the growth of Ratchet's character that he had in the first game.

In the first game, Ratchet went from selfish-guy-who-had-good-intentions-but-was-mostly-an-entertaining a-hole to a hero-in-the-making. He grows during the story with Clank's help and you can see how their friendship begins. And it's a rocky one. They bash heads and argue a lot but in the end they start to care each other. And that's why their friendship is something special, it's not just a dude wanting to help a robot and then suddenly becoming best friends.

Here, Ratchet doesn't grow. He goes to almost-hero to a hero. And Clank feels just bland. Too childish, he had more character in the first game. It doesn't feel like they just met like it did in the original. Their friendship grows too fast or doesn't have enough screentime. It doesn't feel right. Ratchet is also too boyscout if you can say that. Not the more realistic one who kicks ass and knows everything won't always be okay. Clank is just meh. And I used to love him. Sigh.

Drek is just bad. He is reduced to a joke. Where is this nefarious Drek that we all enjoyed in the first game? Instead we have pre-robot Nefarious who is just now a madman who destroys everything. Where is the world conquering? Changing time so "bad guys" never lose. And he doesn't have his hatred for Qwark or it's not showed.

Qwark is Qwark. Having him as a narrator is a good thing but he flipflops right before the end because he sees the "error of his ways." But it's not believable. Why he joined with Drek in the first place? Who knows. In the original, it was for personal glory. Here? I guess it's the same reason...?

And the writing isn't as funny as it was back in the good-old-days. And if I have other issues, planets don't have so much variety they had in the first game. One planet Ratchet couldn't explore without 02 mask due to it being toxic, so Clank explored it first. The other had lighting storms all the time that hid Clank so Ratchet had to go alone. Those things made the planets feel different and more memorable. It's not a huge nitpick, but something I have.

    In summary:

    +Amazing graphics.
    +Gameplay good as ever
    +Enough challenge
+New weapons are good and old ones still shine
    +Not too short, but...

-The original one was longer and was harder
    -Planets lack variety
-New characters are dull and don't add anything to the story
-Story feels like elements from the first trilogy were combined so that it would become the ultimate package. It's not.
-Ratchet & Clank aren't so good anymore and their characters are now too kid-friendly
-Writing isn't what is used to be

Now the seriesSince the Playstation 2 era, Ratchet and Clank has been one of the strongest brands helping push Sony consoles. Developer Insomniac struck the perfect balance of adventure, action and charm. They maintained an incredible momentum in terms of critical and commercial success for years, though entropy wore away the appeal of the franchise late in the Playstation 3 lifecycle. Now the series returns to its roots in a reimagining of the very first title. Fans rightly expected a return to form, and they mostly got it.

Ratchet and Clank is an exceptionally solid action and platforming game. A decade of iteration carries over into the camera controls, spacing and reliable character behaviors. Using Ratchet to carve a path of destruction through droves of enemies has never felt so seamless and comfortable. Likewise the level design is more far more accommodating to dynamic open combat than ever before, with smartly applied cover and vertical terrain. There is more opportunity to strategize and use your wits to plan ahead, which alleviates the long-time issue of feeling unfairly funneled into ambushes. The forethought that went into making every encounter feel balanced ensures this is the best moment-to-moment gameplay in a Ratchet and Clank game.

Unfortunately, the narrative isn’t built on as strong of a foundation. The plot leans far too much on tropes from traditional adventure stories, while adding no unique exposition or character. For example, Ratchet in this rendition has no layers to his identity other than being an unstoppable engine of optimism. In contrast, the original Ratchet was actually quite smug. He could be sarcastic and even vindictive. Ratchet develops a good heart through the hero’s journey, but it was always tempered by interesting human flaws. This is why the new game feels so insubstantial in terms of storytelling, despite having countless beautifully crafted CG cutscenes.

However, it is worth noting that the visual fidelity does benefit the overall product. Ratchet and Clank is one of the most attractive titles on Playstation 4. The asset detail is remarkable, regardless of its stylized appearance. Sophisticated lighting and reflections are implemented with painstaking precision, adding an unprecedented level of believability to the experience. Plus how the engine handles rendering so many enemies and explosions with minimal throttling is genuinely impressive. The only substantial criticisms to be lobbed at the technology is the annoyingly constant need for disguised loading and sub-optimal frame rate. Ratchet and Clank stays mostly locked at 30 frames per second, but can occasionally drop below 20 when scenes become absurdly busy. It is a shame Insomniac didn’t try for 60 frames per second, but is understandable given the sheer spectacle.

Really there isn’t much to improve for the inevitable sequel. The writing certainly needs more depth, particularly to keep adults engaged. Similarly, the soundtrack should lean less on Hollywood bombast for its inspiration. Older Ratchet and Clanks had melodic and memorable tracks, some of which are still revered by the fanbase to this day. Insomniac simply needs to embrace more of the inherent weirdness of science fiction. Ratchet and Clank is a jewel to play and behold, yet it could stand to be a more substantial narrative experience like its predecessors.

While the locales are mostly the same as the original first game, Insomniac wisely decided to add alot of the weapons added on in later installments to the game, giving you a robust selection of weapons to use and upgrade along the way. A collectible card system allows players, like myself, who missed the later games, most notably the PS3 era of games, to catch on those and get an idea of where the series has been recently. The only negative is the awful camera, which will cause a few deaths during everyone's play through. It's extremely frustrating and hard to control to get it right during battles and it is something that needs fixed for future installments. Still, while I thought the game was kinda short, it does have a challenge mode for players wanting to go back in and play for bolts. I enjoyed the game and, for the price point, I would say it's worth it for the amount of sheer fun you will get from this game, especially for long time fans of the series. The game has just enough for those players to warrant a playthrough. Expand

I might have heard the name, but seems nothing familiar. So it is very much like my first encounter with these game characters. And this is really a good first film, I enjoyed, but did not like, because I'm not the target audience. I know, many grown-ups liked it, but they had reasons like they have known this for some time. One thing that fascinated me was the production quality. I can't believe, it was not those silly B class animation, it was very much comparable to Disney, Pixar and DreamWorks films. The only thing that did not favour it was the story. If they have got that part right, it would have been one of the best animations of the years.

So the truth is I tempted to rate it higher for the quality of animation alone. The directors, and all artists must be praised for that. If I were a kid, it would have been my favourite. So what I'm saying it, this film will be loved by children. There's not child film critic, otherwise this film would have been appreciated better. The problem is the critics did not like it, and so the adults, but families with kids might have chance to enjoy it.

Some of the big names in the voice-over artist list, but that did not help the film to see its success. There's no innovation in it, everything you see in the film was already exploited in other films. All those the space warriors thing, the chosen one, villain, mad scientist, betrayal, you have seen them from 'Star wars' to 'Guardian of the Galaxy'. That is another reason for not having a good time with it. It is still very much a watchable film.

There's one thing I really love about this game - it's the difficulty level. I'm playing on hard, and it feels like hard. I had to replay some fights, because the were... well, hard, but at no point did I feel cheated. I reached platinum with all three PS3 titles, and I'm sure I'm going to hit platinum again. Overall, Ratchet and Clank is a well rounded decent game. Visuals are ok, good variety of weapons and enemies, even although the latter tend to have alot of similarities they still offered a good variety. Level design was solid enough and one or two decent puzzles thrown in. My main issues with this game was that it was too easy. 97% of the puzzles were very easy. Combat has its moments but again too easy. The dialogue predictable and even cheesy, some of the set pieces where not executed well (starship missions/turret missions) and for a platformer it felt very slow paced.

Still I score this game favourably especially because of 2 excellent boss fights and the effort the developers put into variety, level design, and minimal bugs that were in the game. I'm an older gamer and usually play the likes of dark souls, witcher, etc... This game feels like a perfect fit for the younger gamer. Well made and challenging enough for a certain age group.

This is a refreshing experience amongst all the generic shooters and "mature" action games. This is truly a contender for best platformer this generation, beating games such as Mario 3D world and DK tropical freeze in my opinion.

I love the somewhat adventure experience that's been missing since the great Banjo Kazooie days. It might be my favourite in this genre since Super Mario

Ratchet & Clank looks and plays as well as it ever has. Fans will enjoy the nostalgic journey through familiar planets, while newcomers will appreciate the chaotic and creative weaponry. But for the ninth game in a franchise that built its name on unique weapons, it’s a shame that the arsenal just coasts on fan-favorites. Insomniac played it safe.
