When ratchet and clank 2002 was running in 60 fps, r&c 2016 is running in 30 fps??? In video game platformer? Really? C'mon Insomniac, i know you can do better than that. The worst thing in this game is character stiffness in cutscenes. It looks very weird while playing the game. In original game the characters were flexible and and were rich in detail, but in r&c 2016 it's just laughter in the room. I hope the next ratchet and clank game will be better than 2016 game. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. As a hardcore fan of the Ratchet and Clank games since the original on the Playstation 2, I don't like this game. Believe me I wanted to like this game but, there are just so many things wrong. The biggest problem with this game is the blatant lack of content. I took my time with this game, really trying to milk it and it was still only about 5 hours long. A lot of the content I expected that they would reuse from the original was strangely absent, like a lot of the planets that I loved (like Eudora, the logging planet, that planets was cool and great atmosphere). The new story additions are stupid, too (but that's just my opinion). The whole Galactic Rangers thing kinda seems like a ploy just to sell **** (I will get more into this later). There are only 14 weapons in this game, which is even less than the original! Beyond that, the weapons are shallow, half of them are just from the ps3 games, like the predator launcher or the groovitron. The Drek from the original R&C was intimidating and throughout the game you wanted to stop him, however in this he is a joke. He looks like a cartoon character and his new voice actor doesnt fit the role of a super villain. He is literally just a ploy to introduce Dr. Nefarius into the series, as Nefarius just kills him anyway. The whole mood of the game feels super cartoon-y, which is the complete opposite of the original and of what I expected. What made the original so great imo was how gritty and unpolished it was, as well as how each planet had its own atmosphere, while in the reboot each planet feels the same and the game drones on after the third or fourth planet. Seeing this short, super polished, easily beaten game makes me think that I was literally watching a movie and pushing buttons. However game play and mechanics arent the only things wrong with this game. The game runs in 30fps, which tbh looks kinda bad but it was a design choice, so that is just my opinion. The menus are lacking, graphical options are near nonexistant. The lack of content in this game worries me. I really hope that the trend of releasing a short game for less money, doesn't catch on. This game almost offends me as I had been waiting for this game for years. The promise of a reboot of my favorite video game series of all time had me super hyped. However, the game given to me was not a Ratchet and Clank game and if the series keeps up like this, I am going to stop buying them. The only thing I really liked about this game was how they included some of the old planets. I might just be a purist, but I really don't recommend this game. Insomniac is pulling the same **** Bethesda pulled with Skyrim and Fallout 4, where they make game easier and more open to the average person. However, by doing this. they are alienating hardcore fans like me and releasing games that just lack the magic the originals like Fallout 3 or Oblivion had. This is a decent game, but not a decent Ratchet and Clank game. Expand

Graphics are great. But the gameplay is very repetitive and found myself just rushing through the game as found it a bit boring. Probably would of liked it if I was 8. Was free so gave it a try but won’t be in a rush to play the next one.

Ratchet and Clank (2016) Review Notes

I have been a long-time fan of the Ratchet and Clank series. I’ve played it since I was young and I’ve beaten the original trilogy dozens of times. I still have a PS2 memory card with a Ratchet and Clank 2 save that has a “number of challenge modes completed” counter in the 40’s. I’m much older now. I’ve played the second “trilogy” of games while I was in university and enjoyed playing through them.

This game is worth a purchase when it decreases in price. It’s “good” for today’s standards of games, but that’s really because of how the industry has changed…

Most of this game just has a more cinematic feel to it, like you can tell it was an adaptation of a movie, rather than the other way around. I feel that it was the fifth or sixth gaming generation where games started to have more resources into putting in cut scenes, though with the exception of a few games. Ratchet and Clank was definitely one of the first set of games I’ve personally played to have decently-sized cut scenes. This reboot, however, really takes it into another level.

But, I don’t state this as necessarily a good thing. Rather, it feels like the game puts emphasis over quality, rather than quantity. However, there’s really no point to that, considering that there’s no substance. It’s like instead of getting a nice salad, you’re given only a single golden leaf to eat for the same price.

There are many differences between this and the original Ratchet and Clank; however, a fair amount of the level design is the exact same, if not reduced in length. Playing this almost felt like playing Black Mesa, just the same old content but reimagined (and with many levels missing). While many of the cinematics are of high quality, there are still many dialogues that are of low quality. Like on planet Pokitaru, for example, the characters are literally just standing in place just talking to each other with barely any body movement. The number of times I’ve heard Clank state, “I’m Clank, and this is Ratchet,” is staggering.

While there are many high-budget cinematics spread throughout the game, there are a lot of low quality copy/paste animations too. It’s not like the original trilogy, where they actually took risks with the animation and had Ratchet do many famous poses, now it simply looks all standardized. Remember Ratchet getting a free photo at the Arena planet in Ratchet and Clank 2? Or him imitating a Courtney Gears pose in Ratchet and Clank 3? Now the animation has high-quality characters, but barely any actual animation due to standardization. To give a quick example, compare the original Simpsons intro to the one now. Sure, the new one is higher quality and cleaner, but there’s barely any custom animation showing their facial expressions due to the high degree of standardization.

I really hate the bonus pre-order gun. They took the most popular weapon from Ratchet and Clank 2, the bouncer, and put it in this game as a pre-order bonus. Depending on your region, you have to have pre-ordered the game from a specific retailer in your country to get it. In many countries, there is only one retailer you can get the bonus from. Typically, these pre-order bonuses do not release afterwards, as was the case with pre-order armor from A Crack in Time. You can’t purchase it down the line after the game comes out, you had to have pre-ordered and gotten the bonus, or you’ll never get it because they’ll never release it in the future.

Still, having an empty slot in my weapons list due to this pre-order bonus gun makes me extremely disappointed. I always used to joke that if the Ratchet and Clank series survived, it’d start having DLC guns and DLC levels with DLC arenas. This is very bad for consumers. Just after a month of release, people are selling their pre-order bonus gun codes for hundreds of dollars due to being in an finite quantity. As well, if anybody in the future wants to get started with the Ratchet and Clank series, they most likely will never be able to get this bonus gun and will always have their list of guns incomplete. It’s somewhat similar to online-only games, which, when their servers are removed will be unavailable forever to new users wanting to try such a game series.

They’ve casualized the series so that more people can try it out, which I suppose I can’t blame due to most game developing companies taking a similar approach in an attempt to make more profits. I’ll definitely never look at a Ratchet and Clank game, as well as Insomniac Games, the same way again. I respect the effort they put into the game, but this game was too short and not to my taste. A challenge mode playthrough, skipping all cut scenes, only took perhaps three hours. To get platinum for this game without using any guides, I took a day and a half, compared to weeks in the original trilogy. They really should’ve supplemented this game’s short campaign with some online multiplayer.

    Pros
-Nice to have a ratchet and clank game on ps4, but a shame we didn't get a REAL game
-Weapon variety is decent, liked the groovitron
-Plays smoothly and didn't run into many bugs
-incorporates some of the good things from the original trilogy, and Qwark has some funny lines

    Cons
-character movements during dialogue is terrible, they don't move at all and just are stiff, and doesn't convey emotion
-disliked what they did to dr.nefarious, his look didn't make sense, he looks green and humanoid? but almost all other games he's now a robot... and why is really in this game, he wasn't in the first game to begin with
-Humor is scaled down a lot from the original trilogy, and the humor that is there feels forced due to again incorporating scenes from the movie. when you get into cutscenes it's basically from the movie and it just feels out of place
    - the holocards just didn't make sense to me, seemed like a stupid gimmick, glad that didn't carry over to rift apart.
    - Gameplay isn't that long
-Most of the new characters, the galactic rangers are very bland and again feel forced due to the movie. They don't really help that much. I personally don't like it when you have side characters that join you on quests yet do almost nothing.

Overall, a letdown and not a very good game. Rift Apart makes up for this game's shortcomings.

Do the people that play this game drink themselves to a stupor before doing so? Can they not see how the characters don't even look at each other during cutscenes? Can't they tell how blatantly obvious it is that a lot of cutscenes are just abruptly cut and your character is somewhere completely different?

They took scenes from the movie and put them in the game to pad out the play time while also having to do less work themselves. The gameplay is so mindboggingly boring compared to the older ones, while also somehow making most weapons braindead to use. The platforming is basically non-existant and nothing feels like it has substance or meaning.
The story is honestly an insult to even children, let alone the actual fans of the game, and they are such big hypocrites that they even go against the promise of the original game (marketing, brands and consumerism) by literally creating the most soulless, cashgrab movie tie-in of their own franchise as a video game and charging 60 bucks for it.

This is the death of the series, and to be honest, it's for the better. I won't have to listen to that hollywood composer wannabe music anymore. They didn't even bother remaking or remastering music from the original game, they just created generic movie orchestra music for all the levels, new and old.

What a disappointment, not even at 20 bucks is this game worth it. Wait for it to be on PS Plus honestly.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I hate giving this game a 4/10 because I'm such a huge fan of the original Ratchet and Clank trilogy. I have played those 5-10 times each and I have beaten Deadlocked at least 3 times. I love this series.

The game play is fun. The graphics are amazing. That's what gets this game to a 4/10. But why I cannot give it any better follows. It should have been a great game but the bad story, stupid weapon upgrading system, poor character rewrites, difficulty spikes for bosses that rely on that bad weapon system, and the RNG trading cards just ruin this game for me.

It had so much potential but this game found a way to make the franchise worse in almost every way.

    Characters and Story:

In the original Ratchet is a bad-ass who wants to leave his planet. He's not naive and doesn't care much for Qwark, but Clank's naivety draws the pair to Qwark who betrays them. At that point Ratchet is so bent on revenge that he lets some planets get destroyed by the Blarg without realizing that he is being selfish. His transformation comes from regret of his own actions.

In this game Ratchet is some dumb, naive and starry-eyed lombax. All he wants is to be a Galactic Ranger. Fine. But when he joins the Rangers, he and Clank are clearly better, stronger and more powerful than all of them put together and he single-handedly saves the day. Cool. So why does he want to be a Ranger? They're essentially irrelevant to the plot except to tell Ratchet where to go next.

When he's betrayed by Qwark in this one, he quits the Rangers and feels sorry for himself. It doesn't make any sense that he blames himself for losing a planet to the Blarg when Qwark clearly betrays him.

Lastly, Drek has a planet-destroying device and Ratchet isn't "Ranger" enough to stop them so he quits even though he knows the consequences of quitting is that the Rangers cannot succeed without him? He only goes back to it after he finds out more planets are being destroyed... but he already knew the stakes. Why would a reminder make him go back? Why quit? Terrible.

The Drek and Nefarious re-writes are bizarre. First of all, the game doesn't need two villains. One evil guy with the ability to blow up planets and terrorize other planets. Nefarious should simply not be in the game. You get no background on him at all aside from he wants to blow up all the planets... but Drek was going to do that anyway. Drek... he's still evil, but in a stupid way now. He is duped by Nefarious - that twist makes no sense.

Lastly, the plot of the originals had Ratchet pick up breadcrumbs from each planet he visited as he solved the puzzle of Drek's master-plan. Here, you don't even know why you go to any planets because the Rangers seem to always know where Drek is going next regardless of Ratchet's actions. Why not just go to Drek's base originally?

Missing Planets - a minor point, but there are only like 12 planets, missing are: Eudora, Umbris, Drek's Fleet, Gemlik Base, Oltanis, and Veldin II. The game feels weirdly short for it.

Novalis, the second planet you visit, is blown up halfway through the game, which is a bizarre choice considering there is Gold Bolt on it and now I have to play through AGAIN to go get it. Why not just have Drek blow up some other planet?

Weapons are fine - but not that exciting - and the upgrade system is nonsensical.

The weapon upgrades just seem really grindy for no reason. Level up weapons by using them - great idea! Why then do you need to grind for raritanium to upgrade them too? There is no reason to have both systems. The raritanium economy is so tightly tuned that you will NEVER upgrade them all fully in one playthrough.

The real sin of this system is that you have to pick which weapons to upgrade and it's not obvious which ones you should favour at first. Essentially the only weapons you need to focus on are the ones you need for bosses or big enemies. Little enemies fall to anything, but the real gate-keepers in this game are the bosses.

Let me make it easy for you, the following weapons are great and need to be upgraded to even survive the boss fights or the big enemy encounters:

    1) Groovitron
    2) Warmonger
    3) Buzz Blades and
    4) Mr. Zyrkon
and then to a lesser extent
    5) Predator Launcher
    6) Pixelizer and
    7) Proton Bomb.

These are musts to finish the game. The rest of the weapons are simply not useful.

Trading cards... ugh. These RNG-based bonuses make no sense. The RYNO is gated behind them. Why? Making the RYNO cost 150,000 (or later 1,000,000) at least meant that it was the reward for a couple of playthroughs of the game. Here it's luck-based and I don't want to grind for it. Which is a cardinal sin in a Ratchet game

Music: the original had such good music. Here, there is not a single memorable track.

Unfortunately, however... I've already ran out of positive things to say about this game.
Ratchet & Clank disappointed me in many many ways.
First of all, the pacing is absolutely awful; the main story gets somewhat engaging only in it's last hour, the rest of the game is completely forgettable and nothing really happens.
The character development and interactions are non-existent, the rest of the game is an experience that doesn't have any depth and there's barely any content apart from the main story.
The movie cutscenes are implemented in the worst ways possible, making the pacing even worse than it already is.
The humor is surprisingly horrible for the most part, which I didn't expect at all.
Also, the mission design, the puzzles and Clank's sections are all extremely monotonous, repetitive and boring, which negatively affect the gameplay loop of the game. As for the gameplay itself, you can finish the entire game just by holding down the attack button to kill the waves, and the aiming feels very stiff for some reason.

    Pros:
    + Beautiful visuals
    + Varied combat system
    + Impressive weapon variety

    Cons:
    - Major pacing issues
    - Completely unmemorable main questline
    - Absent character development and interactions, and unfunny humor

The story is incredibly boring, it's the most basic and uninteresting story that tries to be something bigger but ultimately falls flat by the very choppy pacing, and what the hell is wrong with these cutscenes that were taken from the movie, they are so out of place and very abrupt, it's like they don't even belong in the game.

The planets look great but there's not much to do in them, there are some mini games and I did enjoy few of them but I never felt motivated to genuinely explore and get lost, it's a very linear experience.

The best thing about the game is the environment and the graphics, the game looks really good for most of the time like an animated movie for children, but that's the only thing that truly impressed me.

As for the puzzles... uhhh well, nope, I didn't really enjoy them, fortunately there aren't many of them, it's just that they could've been shorter because they slow down the action.

Also I just wanna point out that I didn't even laugh a single time throughout the entirety of the game, in fact I forgot I was supposed to laugh, the jokes don't land at all, they're embarrassing and very cringe.

It's barely a mediocre game in my opinion, it's right below average with few redeeming qualities, but it could have been significantly better. It's just not fun for me, and I can't help but feel unsatisfied, granted I do think that some people might enjoy it more than I did, because I was left severely disappointed.

    Final Rating: "Weak" ~ 4/10.

I like the game a lot but I'm stuck in one spot and I'm very annoyed because now I have to start the game over again because the spot that it keeps bringing to me to is a dead end and I can't jump nowhere or go anywhere but jump off the edge and die and then it brings me right back to the same spot again even when I get out of the game and start it over the next day to continue thinking it's going to bring me back to my ship No it brings me right back to that same spot again and it's a dead end so I can't jump anywhere or go anywhere or go back to my ship it brings me right back there and I have to die because it's not allowing me to go back to anywhere else so I wish they would fix this because I don't think it's fair that I'm so far in the game and now I have to start it all over again because I'm stuck in that spot... Ratchet & Clank looks and plays as well as it ever has. Fans will enjoy the nostalgic journey through familiar planets, while newcomers will appreciate the chaotic and creative weaponry. But for the ninth game in a franchise that built its name on unique weapons, it’s a shame that the arsenal just coasts on fan-favorites. Insomniac played it safe.

The only non-Nintendo 3D platformer to feel fresh in 2016, and the right way to remake. [June 2016, p.77]

Insomniac Games did not just remake this classic platformer. They boldly bombarded it with ideas and then rebuilt it pixel by pixel using methods unknown 13 years ago. The result is magnificent. [06/2016, p.50]
