As a long-time fan of the franchise, I was really hyped about this game. Too bad it's so disappointing... It starts off good enough. The graphics are pretty, the music sounds good, although none of the melodies are as catchy as they were in the original PS2 game. The controls are as tight as ever and there were some minor tweaks that make pulling off certain moves much easier. TheAs a long-time fan of the franchise, I was really hyped about this game. Too bad it's so disappointing... It starts off good enough. The graphics are pretty, the music sounds good, although none of the melodies are as catchy as they were in the original PS2 game. The controls are as tight as ever and there were some minor tweaks that make pulling off certain moves much easier. The animation is fluid and lively and Ratchet feels much more energetic than he did in the previous games. Revisiting familiar areas, now in shiny HD, is fun.

Unfortunately the game starts to fall apart really fast. Even on the Hard difficulty, it's very easy. In the old games, checkpoints were far and apart and if you died, it was back to the beginning with all enemies respawned. In this game, checkpoints are everywhere. Sure, you can argue it is a kids game - but so were the previous ones and they still offered decent level of challenge. The hacking Trespasser minigame is entirely optional this time around and you have the ability to skip it, even on Hard. "Hurr, just don't skip it," you might say. The option shouldn't be there to begin with. Besides, if you're trying to solve the puzzles and you take a long time, Clank will start nagging you that maybe you should skip it. Yes, it happens on Hard, too. The original Ratchet & Clank didn't need this, why does the reboot? Are they trying to say that kids today are dumber than those in 2002?

There are glitches, too, particularly in the racing sections. Several times I used a boost pad to jump in the air, and despite me landing exactly in the middle of the race track, the game registered it as falling off track and respawned me a few metres back, making me lose the race.

The absolute worst thing about this game are the NPCs. They never. EVER. Shut. The. Hell. Up. Ever! This is what made the dreaded Sonic Boom such a laughing stock, so why on earth did Insomniac think this was a good idea? If you want to go exploring a bit before you progress any further, one of the NPCs that accompany you now and then will keep nagging you until you do what they want. "Hurry up and open this door! Come on, Ratchet, lower the bridge. I need to get to the other side!" Are you serious? It doesn't stop there, though, oh no. If you come to a dead end and take a while to run around, either because you can't immediately see the exit or because you're hunting for hidden goodies, NPCs (and sometimes Ratchet/Clank themselves) will tell you what to do. "Maybe there's a Trespasser console around. Maybe the magnet can help me. If I build the bridges in a specific order, I'll get all the bots in the same place." You can't even turn these garbage hints off without muting all dialogues and missing out on some potentially funny banter. Just screw you, Insomniac. Making a kids game is one thing, insulting your players' intelligence another. I don't expect Bloodborne-levels of difficulty but this is a joke. Free exploration and puzzle solving were an important part of the old games. Now you're just held by your hand and told where to go, what to do, and if you can't be bothered with puzzles, you can just skip them. It reeks of laziness and disrespect.

The constant use of movie clips also comes across as incredibly lazy. Yes, I know it's a movie tie-in, and yes, I'm very much looking forward to the movie and I'll go see it as soon as it comes out. That doesn't mean I want to see half of the movie in this fragmented state before it's even released. One of the blurbs on the cover says that you should "prepare to be blown away by an adventure that looks just as good as the big-screen movie itself", which is a blatant lie. The movie clips have perfect lip sync while the in-game characters just kinda flap their mouth and make an attempt at a facial expression every now and then. The Future trilogy (counting Nexus too) had better facial animation than this game - and that was on PS3. It's painfully clear that the main focus was on the movie and its advertisement, and the game (you know, the medium that started it all and is revered by millions) is just an afterthought.

I wouldn't be this incredibly pissed off if I wasn't a big fan of the series. I've played every R&C game (minus the multiplayer ones), I own multiple copies of the original trilogy, and it really hurts to see something I hold dear butchered like this. Fanboys everywhere will lap it up and give it a perfect 10/10 regardless, so Insomniac can be proud. I just hope this is a one-time thing, not a start of a new dumbed-down series.

If you're a die-hard fan, you'll get it anyway. If you're new to the franchise, you might as well get it too. It's hard not to recommend it because technically it's competent and there IS some fun to be had, even if it's painfully short. Just prepare to feel like a complete idiot while you play this - which actually should be the game's tag line.

Good to see a colorful game on PS4 and with an astonishing technical level. Insomniac prove their technical skill if it was necessary. If only Crash could come back to Sony and being developed by Insomniac .

The game itself is fun. The weapons are awesome. The grind rails, lazer puzzles, and boss battles are great.

One specific time was when Ratchet helped Quark climb up a ledge after a boss battle. I said "wut? k.." because there was no explanation for when or how he got down there so it just felt really non sequitur. It seemed like some of the cutscenes were just removed and they never went back to edit the ones they kept to fit together.

There was also a really frustrating bug during a part of the game where you have to stop the baddies from pressing a big red button that kills you instantly. I was using the Groovitron to interrupt them from pressing the button, but that only worked like 7/10 times. A few times I was looking right at the button. Nobody pressed it, but I still died instantly.

Two of the Playstation brand's most celebrated mascots, Ratchet & Clank arrived on PS4 in this remake of their original PS2 title. Having never played the series, and being a fan of 3D platformers, this was a game I eagerly anticipated. What I found out is that the series (or, at least, this particular game) lacks many of the things that made me love the genre in the first place.

As the game opens, Ratchet is a mechanic apprentice lombax who lives on a peaceful planet but dreams of going in adventures and becoming a hero. One day, has a fateful encounter with Clank, an escaped robot from a grim warbot factory in another planet. Clank wants to stop the evil Chairman Drek from destroying planets with his newest weapon, the deplanetizer, and so the duo embark on an adventure to warn the Galactic Rangers. Yes, it's all very derivative of Star Wars, which is a real bummer when one considers the endless possibilities for a cartoonesque space opera universe.

The titular duo's gameplay partnership is reminiscent of one of the genre's pinnacles: Banjo-Kazooie. Ratchet walks, jumps, and attacks enemies, while Clank, affixed on the lombax's back, aids the gameplay with special movements such as shortly hovering in mid-air. That's where the similarities with Banjo stop, however, as R&C features linear, story-driven progression instead of the more open-ended format seen on Rare's classic series.

Collectibles are present, although the linear story-driven nature of the game hardly compelled me to go out of my way to find them. The most important items are the many wacky guns and weapons you can acquire, which help Ratchet defeat enemies in a variety of ways. They're fun to use, but the lack of a Metroidvania-like push for backtracking feels like a wasted opportunity.

It should be said that the game's performance and production values are stellar. Graphics are crisp and colorful, while movement is extremely fluid. The music is at odds with this, as Ratchet & Clank's soundtrack eschews catchy tunes for generic orchestrated action themes, usually seen on big-budget animation movies.

Sadly, the music isn't the only time the game shows its obsession with being a big-budget animation movie, which is generally to its great detriment. The strict adherence to a script brings forth problems such as the aforementioned linearity, which is frustrating in an universe full of potential like this one. Characters also constantly banter on screen, spewing out tired quips and ho-hum jokes. This is bad by itself, but gets aggravating fast in more difficult sessions, since you'll have to listen to every single line again after each time you die.

The game can certainly be fun, however. Like I said, weapons are a highlight, and there are several action-heavy sequences that can be exhillarating. What is missing is a way to just sit back and explore after each of those sequences, or at least meaningful reasons to do so. As is, Ratchet & Clank ends up feeling like a mere tie-in to their first movie, which was released concurrently, or a warm-up for young players before they get into other franchises in the genre with deeper, better-designed gameplay.

    TL;DR:
I think the main problem with Ratchet & Clank is not that it lacks ambition, but that its ambition is woefully misdirected. Instead of wanting players to discover and explore its admittedly alluring universe, it wants to strictly guide them through a mediocre movie plotline. I mean, they released an actual animated movie alongside the game, so why not try more of a focus on open-ended exploration here instead?

Where I feel this game falls short of being a 10/10 in my books is the cut scenes. While fully animated cut scenes are top notch, in game cut scenes, such as when characters are talking, leave me a bit underwhelmed. Outside of the fully animated cut scenes, the characters' expressions look odd, and sometimes non existent. Ratchet and Clank is all about the characters, so when I see characters like Ratchet and Skid McMarx with somewhat... iffy expressions, it was very noticeable to me. This isn't to say its a reason to not get the game though. It is an excellent addition to any fan's collection!

Gameplay wise it feels like classic Ratchet & Clank, and that is certainly a good thing: rock solid controls, fun platforming, simple but satisfying puzzles. Levels are short, but long enough to give you plenty of action, and the later stages are so action packed that no matter how big of Ratchet's arsenal is, you feel you dont have enough firepower to overcome the gargantuan amount of folks comming your way, but when you do beat the stage is satisfying as always.

The game takes the best elements from the later games in the franchise, such as the jet-pack, combat mechanics, upgrade system, and tighter controls, and it feels fantastic to run around killing enemies. The game's problems start to show, however, when you realize that some of the level designs haven't matured along with the mechanics, as some of the levels and enemy designs are very similar to how they were inside the original game. The story also feels quite a bit weaker and disjointed since it's trying to tie-in to the story of the movie. A lot of Ratchet and Clank fans might be polarized by a lot of the levels and more adult dialogue that they cut out. It's especially jarring to have a Ratchet and Clank game without arenas and skill points, two major staples of later games in the franchise that are conspicuously absent here.

Overall, however, this is still an extremely fun game and is better than a lot of the AAA games that have been coming out recently. While it's not the best in the series, this game does show that Ratchet and Clank can still be relevant in this age of video game realism and maturity.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. As a hardcore fan of the Ratchet and Clank games since the original on the Playstation 2, I don't like this game. Believe me I wanted to like this game but, there are just so many things wrong. The biggest problem with this game is the blatant lack of content. I took my time with this game, really trying to milk it and it was still only about 5 hours long. A lot of the content I expected that they would reuse from the original was strangely absent, like a lot of the planets that I loved (like Eudora, the logging planet, that planets was cool and great atmosphere). The new story additions are stupid, too (but that's just my opinion). The whole Galactic Rangers thing kinda seems like a ploy just to sell **** (I will get more into this later). There are only 14 weapons in this game, which is even less than the original! Beyond that, the weapons are shallow, half of them are just from the ps3 games, like the predator launcher or the groovitron. The Drek from the original R&C was intimidating and throughout the game you wanted to stop him, however in this he is a joke. He looks like a cartoon character and his new voice actor doesnt fit the role of a super villain. He is literally just a ploy to introduce Dr. Nefarius into the series, as Nefarius just kills him anyway. The whole mood of the game feels super cartoon-y, which is the complete opposite of the original and of what I expected. What made the original so great imo was how gritty and unpolished it was, as well as how each planet had its own atmosphere, while in the reboot each planet feels the same and the game drones on after the third or fourth planet. Seeing this short, super polished, easily beaten game makes me think that I was literally watching a movie and pushing buttons. However game play and mechanics arent the only things wrong with this game. The game runs in 30fps, which tbh looks kinda bad but it was a design choice, so that is just my opinion. The menus are lacking, graphical options are near nonexistant. The lack of content in this game worries me. I really hope that the trend of releasing a short game for less money, doesn't catch on. This game almost offends me as I had been waiting for this game for years. The promise of a reboot of my favorite video game series of all time had me super hyped. However, the game given to me was not a Ratchet and Clank game and if the series keeps up like this, I am going to stop buying them. The only thing I really liked about this game was how they included some of the old planets. I might just be a purist, but I really don't recommend this game. Insomniac is pulling the same **** Bethesda pulled with Skyrim and Fallout 4, where they make game easier and more open to the average person. However, by doing this. they are alienating hardcore fans like me and releasing games that just lack the magic the originals like Fallout 3 or Oblivion had. This is a decent game, but not a decent Ratchet and Clank game. Expand

What happened? Ratchet and Clank is my favorite video game series, sitting through trying to play this game was misery. The story was painfully bland, the music didn't live up to the original's, the gameplay was fine but not as fun as any other Ratchet and Clank game. Reboots, or "reimaginings" are never as good as the original, and they should've just continued the series from where it left off.

R&C is a blast, it's a light hearted, fun, platform shooter. It doesn't take itself seriously, and provides great comedy and satire in places.

It's a great looking game, colourful and each planet is varied. Lots of over-the-top weapons. Insomniac Games have also added a number of different sequences, so the game never feels dull, there's always something to keep you engaged, running

The script is playful and you'll find yourself smiling as you play this game. A great game for everyone. It's not revolutionary, and doesn't bring anything novel to the genre, but it is a solid entry and you'll get somewhere around 10ish to 15 hours out of it depending on your desire to obtain collectibles.

Ratchet & Clank (2016) was very disappointing. I'm not saying I didn't like the game sure I did, it was fun to play. To bring it to newcomers, it re imagines the story of the first game that was released in 2002. Long term fans overall felt disappointed, the gameplay was good but story-wise, that's where it lacked.

It's a really fun game but it feels like a step back from Crack in Time. I get that it's a remake of the first game but I think they could have added more to it. Like I said, still a really fun and good game but it feels just like the Future series but with less to do. And there's no arena...

The game looks amazing and plays well. It's also different enough from the first Ratchet & Clank that you won't fell like you played the same game before. The only negative is the drop from 60 FPS to 30 FPS. This is Insomniac, fellas. They could have made it run 60 FPS with a bit more development time. Other than that, solid game and the $40 price tag is a step in the right directionThe game looks amazing and plays well. Ratchet & Clank looks and plays as well as it ever has. Fans will enjoy the nostalgic journey through familiar planets, while newcomers will appreciate the chaotic and creative weaponry. But for the ninth game in a franchise that built its name on unique weapons, it’s a shame that the arsenal just coasts on fan-favorites. Insomniac played it safe.

The only non-Nintendo 3D platformer to feel fresh in 2016, and the right way to remake. [June 2016, p.77]

Insomniac Games did not just remake this classic platformer. They boldly bombarded it with ideas and then rebuilt it pixel by pixel using methods unknown 13 years ago. The result is magnificent. [06/2016, p.50]
