By the end, Ratchet and Clank (2016) isn't just a better-playing copy of a now-classic action game; it packs in enough surprises to keep a decade-plus fan like myself surprised. For that matter, "better-playing" doesn't do this remake justice. This is the best blend of shooting, hopping, and humor the series has struck yet. Whether that's enough to overcome origin story fatigue—or general Ratchet and Clank fatigue—is an open question.

That’s not to say that Ratchet and Clank is a lifeless cash-in. It’s replete with care and vitality, and it feels like an honest return to a world the creators love. But as a utilization of its own past, it’s dull and safe. A game that so directly recreates a relic of gaming’s past needs to justify its own existence—to use the past in an interesting way, to imbue it with creative vitality. 2016’s Ratchet and Clank doesn’t. Nothing here surprises. Nothing here transforms.

I love this series, so I was thrilled to have it back.

Now this is a remake/reboot, so it does follow the broad strokes of the initial game way back in 2002. But it does so having incorporated 14 years of progress in gameplay, graphics, and storytelling to punch up the narrative. Plus, it's only $40! When was the last time a Triple A studio dropped a trademark game for less than $60 (or more with DLC)? It is absolutely worth your money, especially if you love any of the previous games in the series, clever platformers, or quirky Pixar-esque humor.

Here's hoping the sales are good and Insomniac is already working on the next R&C game for more from this wonderful franchise!
