This game is AMAZING even if you hate the story, world, characters, etc the combat is so fun that this other things have little to no importance and when this game is firing on all cylinders is a beautiful ballet of death and destruction even more than 2016 Doom and if you like that game you gonna love Rage 2

I also like the open world it takes place in, Rage 2 is a good and mindless FPS with tons of action and plenty to do. My only complaint is while driving from place to place there should've been way more random events and encounters to keep things fresh. But all in all I think Avalanche did a good job and am glad this game ame out. Expand

Rage 1 was not a masterpiece, far from it, simple light story. But it it had great potential for a sequel. However I have to say that this game is is ruined by the puerile dialogue and endless pink coloring and anyoying characters, I mean virtually every character. It's got to the point where I like the gameplay but I can't stand to hear the main character talk. It's really like the dialogue and story was written by an immature 12 year old.

It really is that bad. Other things. Game is pretty much only playable with a controller on the pc due to abilities and the car elements. Bethesda.. So.. They don't sell dlc or skins (quite why anyone would want a skin for a single player game I have no idea but there must be greed) they sell coins which means a dlc will cost 1000 coins, 10€ but what you want costs 9 euros. They force you to spend more than the value of a dlc.

Real shame. Don't buy it. Even if you enjoyed the original unless you can take moronic dialogue and pathetic humour every 2 seconds. I wasted my money on this.

Oh yeah and it has bugs where npcs dissappear during conversations so you are talking to nobody. Presumably they could have fixed this but didn't bother.

I'm not even going to finish this game. It's such a bland and boring title and in 2021 it's still filled with tons of sluggish menu lag. I liked the combat but I was still expecting more.

The action is great and the upgrading system keeps you going for a while. The open world, however, is grossly repetative and the game lacks interesting side quests.

not bad as a pure shooting concept, but other than that the game sucks the story is so bad and short the world full of ubisoft side missions.

The open world elements are pretty generic and the “story” is laughably bad. But triggering overdrive and liquefying bandits with your shotgun is pure first person shooter ecstasy. If you can look past some obvious shortcomings you’ll find some of the best combat around.

And that's just a short review, not all parts of the film, and it's just a summary.
Everything is dead without a story. The game is not excluded from this rule. The lack of a compelling story is the main reason for the weakness of this title, otherwise what reason other than a really awful story and boring tutorials has prevented this game from getting better?

This game feels like an insult to story telling. the game actually barely has a story that I think you are better off playing DOOM (2016) because this game feels like a doom clone. Which is bold to say because it was made by ID Software the same creators as doom.
But it's hard to say that this game has any resemblance to anything else than DOOM because this feels like a scrapped doom game

It's definitely lost something from the original Rage. The FPS gameplay isn't as tight, and the settings aren't as eerily beautiful and apocalyptic. Everything from encounter design to the characters and the story are fairly generic. The game engine is slow and clunky, especially the character menu. It sometimes takes 5-7 seconds to switch between your menu tabs. It almost feels like it's timing out. There's still fun to be had here.

Your personal vehicle is armored and you can upgrade the heck out of it. Your weapons are really good and fun to use. It's an open-world style and you have tons of stuff to get into , it is a very long playing game. It's kind of snarky like how Borderlands was which makes it fun. The only thing that they do need to work on is maybe adding a team-mate in the sequel. You almost get teammates but they don't get to ride with you or do anything with you. If you choose to go down that path as a game creator, please make sure you give the teammates a lot of verbiage so their conversations don't become monotony like most video games. All in all, I was pleasantly surprised with this game. Most game creators these days are like lemmings , if one gets a stupid idea everyone else follows suit and puts as much dumb stuff in a video game as they can which becomes agonizing and restrictive. They went around the status quo and added as much fun in this game as they could. Good job! I intend to buy more of your products. Expand

the open world part, on the other hand, is an Avalanche Software's (of Just Cause and Mad Max fame) doing, and it's Just Boring (pun intended). a checklist of filler content and chores to do - clear out the outposts, loot the crates, destroy the mutant nests, roadblocks, turrets, etc., rinse and repeat. even the story at some point will mandate doing this side stuff in order to progress further.
the progression system is tied to said side tasks and exploration, so before the combat picks up and becomes crazy fun, you'll have to take your time and find the the weapons and abilities, grind out various currencies to upgrade them.
the story and characters are just there, and that's about it. cutscenes remind of, say, Far Cry and Borderlands, but lack the charm and are so few, they get forgotten pretty fast. there are, like, 6 missions excluding the prologue and final boss, so if you want to skip on "filler content", you're left with short and bare-bones campaign.
the performance on base PS4 does dip quite a bit, more powerful machines capable of better frame rate are a much better option. loading times aren't too long. bugs are mostly gone (with patch 1.09), no glitched trophies in my experience (they pop up with some delay). stats menu still can glitch out though.
in conclusion, RAGE 2 could've been an amazing game but suffers from bad open world design, lack of meaningful content, and absence of co-op/multiplayer. pick it up only for cheap and keep your expectations in check.

Very cool atmosphere, cool enemies and cool combat. Bad quests and terrible story and pacing. But the most annoying thing is that this game is heavily inspired in mad max, so you would expect that there would be lots of car options for car combat right? It has, but every single car is utterly garbage, there is just no reason for you to do anything with a different car than your main one.Very cool atmosphere, cool enemies and cool combat. The story and missions were not very interesting so that was a bit disappointing

I honestly don't understand why this game is so hated, the goofy dialogue? the vehicle experience? or the colorful presentation?
don't we play games for fun? and this game is damn fun.
the highlight is the gunplay, so gritty and it hits hard, satisfied to shoot and beautiful to look at. meaningful power upgrade. sometimes i just don't need games to be deep, or touching, or even

sometimes i just don't need games to be deep, or touching, or even reasonable, that's for the game critics to pretend. I just need games to be fun.
too underrated, hope there will be a sequel, would def buy it.

This game had the potential to be WAY better than it was. Don't get me wrong I enjoyed it and still go to it here and there to just kill muties. Story was lacking a bit I think though. And maybe multiplayer racing. Could have been a BLAST. Expand

This game isn't that great. It's supposedly open world but you're usually forced to drive to locations via a set path, with mountains blocking any deviation. All weapons and special abilities are collected via side missions, which are also boring, meaning that I completed the game without all of the powers and with only half of the weapons - you don't really need them. The only saving grace is the combat which is good, as it was made by ID Software who made Doom. Worth a quick run-through as the campaign isn't that long if you focus on the main missions only, but I would not recommend buying this - play it for free on PS Plus or your equivalent subscription service. Rage 2’s nonsensical story is unbearable, and the unskippable exploration parts are mostly irritating and boring. Luckily, the shooting gameplay is so amazing that it’s easy to forgive these flaws. And while encounters can become repetitive, new weapons and abilities make sure there’s always some fun to be had.

Rage 2 is a victim of a wave of technical issues and painfully average story but still manages to be one of the most fun FPS you can encounter and can provide you with your adrenaline shot for the day if needed.

The relentless thrill of one half of it dragged down by the barren, boring needless sprawl of the other. [Issue#334, p.110]
