the open world part, on the other hand, is an Avalanche Software's (of Just Cause and Mad Max fame) doing, and it's Just Boring (pun intended). a checklist of filler content and chores to do - clear out the outposts, loot the crates, destroy the mutant nests, roadblocks, turrets, etc., rinse and repeat. even the story at some point will mandate doing this side stuff in order to progress further.
the progression system is tied to said side tasks and exploration, so before the combat picks up and becomes crazy fun, you'll have to take your time and find the the weapons and abilities, grind out various currencies to upgrade them.
the story and characters are just there, and that's about it. cutscenes remind of, say, Far Cry and Borderlands, but lack the charm and are so few, they get forgotten pretty fast. there are, like, 6 missions excluding the prologue and final boss, so if you want to skip on "filler content", you're left with short and bare-bones campaign.
the performance on base PS4 does dip quite a bit, more powerful machines capable of better frame rate are a much better option. loading times aren't too long. bugs are mostly gone (with patch 1.09), no glitched trophies in my experience (they pop up with some delay). stats menu still can glitch out though.
in conclusion, RAGE 2 could've been an amazing game but suffers from bad open world design, lack of meaningful content, and absence of co-op/multiplayer. pick it up only for cheap and keep your expectations in check.

It's definitely lost something from the original Rage. The FPS gameplay isn't as tight, and the settings aren't as eerily beautiful and apocalyptic. Everything from encounter design to the characters and the story are fairly generic. The game engine is slow and clunky, especially the character menu. It sometimes takes 5-7 seconds to switch between your menu tabs. It almost feels like it's timing out. There's still fun to be had here.

I don't think it's a bad game but the story is boring and the checkpoint system sucks, it let's you "save" your progress but the problem is they always uses checkpoints witch are long and when your playing a fast paste game like this it's kind of annoying to go back sometimes. What is a shocker for me is the fact that to obtain every gun and ability, you need to find specific places around the map. Guess what, even though I was exploring quite a lot, I did not manage to find 4/8 guns nad 3/5 abilities. I finished the game with you could say basic guns. Surprisingly for me I did not find it somehow bad but I could spent hours trying to find these places and never find them. In terms of graphics I was satisfied. Physics worked great and I felt like I am in a real wasteland. Entire world felt basically alive and vibrant which is a reason I loved this game. Aaaaand now there is a story or no story at all I should say :D You do not need story at games like these but than you cannot expect anything better than 8/10. The most disappointing thing about this game are the bossfights which might be due to the reason there are no bossfights at all! Every single "boss" is the same which is quite frankly humiliating for a triple A title. Nonetheless I enjoyed the title. Good 7/10 Expand

For me, the gameplay that was shown looked like a combination of Fallout 4's colourful art style mixed with Doom 2016's fast, frenetic combat with a hint of futuristic Mad Max 2015 thrown in for good measure. It Was Awesome I simply could not wait for this game to get a release date because it was everything that I wanted from a sequel to Rage and more. E3 only served to increase my hype for Rage 2, but something about the gameplay demo didn't sit right with me.

Fast forward to May 2019 and I was baffled by review scores for Rage 2. It was only when I started playing the game that I understood what was wrong. Despite all of the clever pre-release marketing that cannily broke the fourth wall and possessed a Deadpool-esque style of humour that hinted at a smart self-aware game, Rage 2 was actually disappointingly dumb by comparison.

For me, the game's potential as a great sequel ended with the opening cinematic/monologue. After this point, the game's narrative became a parody of itself. The prologue I experienced was cringe inducing, woefully written, and just horribly cliched - your home base gets destroyed, the main villain personally shows up to join the 'party' (and somehow doesn't get killed then and there), your mentor gets killed personally by the main villain, and every other Ranger gets killed in the attack, leaving just you as the 'Last Ranger' who is the only one who can save the day. It doesn't get any better after this.

The main plot of Rage 2 involves seeking out 3 prominent figureheads to help you enact Project Dagger - an operation that will defeat the Authority - but that's about it. Despite it's 8 to 10 hour campaign length, Rage 2's main plotline is actually disappointingly very short. In total there are only 8 missions that make up the main story, but the campaign's overall length is padded out by the need to complete various open world activities to level up each figurehead's resistance meter and unlock that figurehead's next mission - somewhat similar to Just Cause 4. This is really a waste of storytelling potential because the world building and various factions present in Rage 2 could have provided excellent material and awesome story moments to help flesh out the main story and the player's interactions with these factions. It's also a huge waste of the brilliant concept and art design that went into developing Rage 2's world.

Another shocking disappointment is the COMPLETE LACK OF SIDE MISSIONS. I find this immensely frustrating because Rage 1 had A LOT of side missions which is why their absence in Rage 2 is highly questionable. There are perpetual bounties, but they amount to very little besides killing generic enemies and receiving piddly amounts of points and cash. In terms of world design, Rage 2 is a massively missed opportunity - the world is more open and explorable than the original, but it is completely empty and devoid of life besides the many side activity markers that dot the map. And speaking of side activities, I quickly became uninterested in Rage 2's side activities because of how repetitive they were - as a personal message to the developers, this is a really, really big problem when these side activities make up nearly 90% of the content in your game. Beyond this, Rage 2 lacks any form of decent story content.

I'd talk about the combat, but really that part of the game speaks for itself - weighty weapons that pack a hefty punch, plus a few unique toys that make Rage 2 almost redeemable. Take for example the gun that shoots darts that let you literally play around with the physics of enemies and objects, maybe making them collide or do other hilarious things. Or the gun that shoots bullets that ignite when you snap your fingers. These are just two examples of how Rage 2's combat sets itself apart from the competition, but it isn't without its problems. I experienced an annoying glitch where the revolver's bullets wouldn't ignite and another glitch where one of my weapons wouldn't do any damage at all

Design-wise, I found some significant flaws in Rage 2. Just before you leave, there are a whole bunch of NPC's all grieving in the wake of the attack, at the centre of which is Lily, the main character's best friend. After getting in the Phoenix ranger vehicle and driving a hundred metres away, I made a quick U-turn and headed back to the home base. I was startled to find that all the NPC's had disappeared and Lily was left awkwardly standing by herself in the same position. It didn't matter how many times I fast travelled to the home base, Lily would still be there doing the same thing. This speaks volumes of the design shortcuts taken in Rage 2.

It shocks me to think that it took 5 years to make Rage 2 and yet the original remains the better game. I can only hope they do better with Rage 3

I am saying it again, it had the potentials, it had the atmosphere, the 80's feel, the blood, the horror, the punks, the apocalypse but god! that story was so rushed and the voice acting was so poor...

The only thing that did well was the shooting part, which is so addictive and satisfying as hell and the performance which was running flawless without fps drops and stutters...

I played Rage 2 on my PS4 Pro with SSD and did quite a lot of sidetracking in the beginning when the boredomness kicked in and I decided to go straight on with the story mode.

The game engine itself looks great and runs smooth. In this regard it deserves probably a 9. The sound effects are pretty good too also when it comes to surround aspects but I wouldnt consider it topnotch. Loading times and fast travel went pretty in the seconds. Also I did not encounter any bluescreens or framedrops which is pretty solid but the gameplay itself is pretty flat. The story can be even considered bad or at least very flat. I do not like the vehicles and how the world traversal feels. It is kinda bothersome and pointless to do.

Most of the objectives are not very entertaining either. Basically it is drive to x, kill everything and move on or collect stuff. This is not enough in my opinion and way too generic. Looking around for singular boxes to complete areas is also pretty much only a waste of time and drove me crazy. The gunplay and gore is entertaining but even this is very flat. Basically dash, dodge, shoot, done. AI is very stupid on the intended game difficulty. Boss mobs are rare and mostly one mode re-skinned 4 times. If you know how to take them they wont even fire at you.

I basically used two guns, didnt even unlock most of the others which I do not even know why but it feels weird because I nearly full cleaned the first two areas. Some passage and turrent enemies are very frustrating and the racing modes do not add much either.

All in all I kinda like the style of this game, the action, gore and how they wanted the game to be and to reflect but the core is dead and without any passion for gamers. I bought the deluxe edition on a sale for 25 bucks and I m not sure whether it was worth it, so that tells much about the game quality and the fun I had. It still wasnt bad only and I do had some fun it was just very bland and in all honesty I wouldnt buy it again and so I would also not recommend this as a buy even on sale, sadly.

Rage 2’s nonsensical story is unbearable, and the unskippable exploration parts are mostly irritating and boring. Luckily, the shooting gameplay is so amazing that it’s easy to forgive these flaws. And while encounters can become repetitive, new weapons and abilities make sure there’s always some fun to be had.
