Persona 5 is an addictive JRPG that will prove difficult to even put down the controller.

The story follows you, a Tokyo High-Schooler that attends Shujin Academy. You have been accepted there due to you having a criminal record, be it false. The story is a key point in the Persona franchise, usually following this formula, you being a Japanese high schooler with supernatural powers (With exception of Persona 2. The cast are actually adults). The narrative follows you and your other friends, who have Personas, and dubbed yourself the Phantom Thieves of Hearts. You go through palaces, otherworldly settings in the metaverse, where you can summon your powers. You 'steal' hearts from rotten adults, and when you steal the heart/treasure in the metaverse, they'll confess their sins in the real world.

The RPG section of the game comes in the palaces, and another randomly generated palace of sorts called momentos. However, you also have to balance your everyday life and stay out of trouble, since you're on probation. Perform well in school, increase confidant levels, or social links, and improve your stats and buy/make tools to use in the metaverse. You can also hang out with friends you develop in the game.

Personas belong to arcana, or a group of shadows (enemies in palaces) and personas that share traits. Persona may be grouped in an arcana due to physical appearance, mythology, personality, and/or stats. Hanging out with confidants improves the power level of persona's you can make in the arcana they pride in. This happens in the infamous velvet room, taking form as a jail now.

In Persona 1 and 2, the Velvet room was just a room, with Igor, the boss of it, residing there. In Persona 3 it became an elevator, and in Persona 4, it was a limousine. The velvet room in Persona 5 is my favorite so far, since the fusion is done grimly yet stylishly.

Speaking of style, this game is bringing all of it. It's beautiful, loud, and in your face (But in a good way). The game has hues of red dancing across it, and shades of white and black accompanying it.

Characters in this game are amazing as well. They fall into some anime tropes, but have unique traits that pull them away from them, making it trouble to decide which story you want to learn first. The settings in this game are really realistic to modern day Tokyo, and immerse you into the metaverse, with an uneasy feel in them.

The story this time focusses on freedom and oppression. I won't say anymore, because I made the summary above a little spoiler-y.

Finally, the music is lovely, and it presents a cooler feel, with a calm, jazzy background. Truly, my only complain is the camera in sneak portions of the game, since it can be really gimmicky, and mess you up. All my game overs so far were due to the camera, delivering some frustration to me.

Persona 5 is a Brilliant JRPG that any one remotely interested in should own.

-This is by far the best Persona game I've played. It has the perfect balance of humor and mellow in it. P1, P2 and P3 has dark tones and melodramatic narrative. P4 went overboard with the humor and it's not necessarily a bad thing but it definitely felt like a different Persona game to me. P5 has a balance of both in terms of narrative.

-The major and minor characters, most of them are likable and has good depth in them.
-The aesthetic and visual of the game is superb. The colors are vibrant and the art style is beautiful. The dungeons are detailed and interactive. I'm super happy that they aren't as dull or bland as the previous ones (Tartarus comes to mind). The boss designs are also very good.
-The soundtrack is absolutely outstanding. Shoji Meguro is a music genius. It compliments the narrative and game atmosphere very well.
-The gameplay is magnificent. It has the same, familiar turn based combat of Persona games and they've added some new things to it as well. There are two new elements (nuclear and psi). Demon negotiations from the mainline SMT games are also added, making acquiring new personas a little challenging.
-There are tons of content in the form of side quests, social links and collectibles.

Persona 5 is a modern JRPG masterpiece that I would put in the same level as Chrono Trigger, Xenogears and FF6. It's definitely my favorite game for this year. It's an absolute must play for MegaTen veterans and for open minded new comers who'd like to try a modern JRPG.

Persona 5 is a very niche game, it is a turn based combat system and a social/dating sim. If you don't like either of those, you will dislike this game a lot. Not to say the game is bad, it is a very good game, it just has to many flaws (you can easily tell the limitations the game has because it released on the PS3, instead of being a full fledged PS4 game using its hardware to the max) to be given a higher score than what I rated it.

The story is like a roller coaster, it has its ups and downs. The game's story is at its best when you are doing the palaces, and the story that revolves around them. But when you finish them, there is such a long low part of the game where it is just dialogue for several hours doing all the mundane stuff, waiting for your next target. Which bored me so much, I was just skipping some dialogue that didn't have voice overs that weren't pertaining to the main story. Another thing I did not like, is that every party character had to go through their Persona identity crisis. It just felt like every party character you met just repeated itself.

As for the game play, the turn base combat is fun and interrogating the monsters is a interesting concept to capture them to use their powers. It feels very much like Pokemon. The stealth part in the palaces can be somewhat wonky at times because of the issues with the camera, but overall is a solid edition to the game. The best part of the combat system is finding the weakness in each enemy, and then knocking them all down to do a flashy move that most of the time kills all the monsters in a single strike. The bad thing about the weakness system, it goes both ways. Monsters can strike you multiple times if they have the weakness of the person they are attacking. Which can easily lead to a single wipe on harder difficulty settings.

The music and the art style of the game is amazingly done and are easily the best part of the game. The rock/jazz/electronic music fits very well with the theme. And the style makes up for the limitations that Altus had to hold back by still having the game release on PS3 in 2016/2017.

In the end, if you are looking for a JRPG to play, look no further than Persona 5. It is the ideal JRPG and a great starting point in the Persona series. It is just not for everyone.

I am almost shocked at the attention to detail in this game. Persona 5 is easily the best Turn based RPG I have played since the PS2. It is among the best JRPGs of all time as far as I am concerned.

The themes and characters are solid, the dungeon and social aspects feel fully integrated and the pacing is on point. Everything in this game is overflowing with style, even the menus are a joy to look at.

I was afraid they would just try and repeat the success of Persona 4, but Persona 5 has really gone all out to distinguish itself and the effort paid off. My only worry is how they'll be able to improve on things for the next entry.

Persona 5 is a phenomenal game, and could be praised for the way it fills its longevity alone. I found myself sinking over 24 hours into the game within the first 3 days with no apprehension. This game may very well take you over 100 hours to beat, but the time you spend rarely feels like padding.

I love the characters, the story, the combat, but most of all the stylish design choices.

Persona 5 is the perfect JRPG - if you don't mind heavy dialogue and traditional turn based combat.

I'll start off saying I haven't beaten the game and am likely nowhere near done. So far, Persona 5 has a fun story and really great mechanics.

I'm bored to death of the high school student story trope in anime/JRPGs, but somehow this one just completely sucked me in. Maybe it's because I too hung out in the "back alleys" of my high school with the less popular folks, I don't know.

Anyway, the story is good and dives into interesting commentary while providing a nice, crisp anime aesthetic.

The mechanics shine through the most and is the main reason for my high rating. Some gamers swore that a turn-based RPG just couldn't be engaging in 2017 and yet Persona 5 exists, advancing turn-based mechanics in meaningful ways while all others adhere to fake "action" combat.
Besides that mechanic is the whole social-link aspect, which really makes the game feel like you're living the life of a student by day and a master thief by night, balancing relationships and activities which will help your alter-ego/team in combat.

It takes everything that worked well on P4 and add some awesome features. The gameplay is really cool and dynamic, the story looks great (i'm at 30h, still far from the end). As usual, the soundtrack is just... perfect.

Ever since I finished Persona 4 on the PS2 many years ago, I've been waiting for this game to come out and my expectations for this game were astronomically high. And, while I would say it didn't live up to that, the game is almost as perfect as I was hoping it would be. There are a few very minor issues that keep it from reaching the perfect heights that I had hoped for but nothing to keep this from being the best JRPG to come out for a very long time and one of the best games for the current console generation.
It begins and ends with the Story and, while it takes literally hours upon hours of gameplay to finally pick up steam, it has a very satisfying ending and final boss. The dungeons are a big key to that too as they are handmade instead of randomly generated like previous games. While some of them drag on a little too much, (especially one of the ending dungeons), they really set the tone for the game at that point and the bosses were very well designed.
The characters are also very well done. There are a few standout characters, including the new "mascot" character in this game, Morgana. However, I'd still say that, as a group, Persona 4's cast was a bit more memorable but that might only be from the amount of time I've spent with that game. The voice acting is superb and not just for the main cast. The side characters are really well done too but that's to be expected. I'm a bit disappointed that there wasn't more VO's at some of the more important parts of the game, especially a few scenes at the end, but there's hundreds of lines of dialogue already. That might be a good idea for any kind of remake that will hopefully happen in the future.
The combat is the same but they've added two new types of damage: Psy and Nuke. They've also added new Personas in the game, but the bigger story might be that they left some of the most controversial monsters in the game. Google the Persona "Mara" and you'll know what I'm talking about. However it was really cool to see some regular Personas like Jack Frost and Pixie in 3D. Plus the new Personas are very cool looking and not just the main characters. The party members have some amazing new Persona designs and it's probably the best collection or Personas so far I think. Special mention has to be made for the music too. The Persona series has always had some of the best music in video gaming and this game was an excellent reminder of that. It's one of the few series I'd pay to buy the soundtrack of and listen to it over and over again.
There's one big caveat that I want to mention for anyone playing this game: it takes literally dozens upon dozens of hours to complete and it's not an easy game. This is not a series for beginners or people who don't like RPG's. However, if you can deal with all of that, you'll find a game and a series with a ton of heart and promise. This game in particular, while it took almost a decade to be released, shows that the guys at Atlas still got it. And with the way things went with Persona 4, I imagine we will be seeing a few spinoffs and, hopefully, a bigger and better remake in the next few years. Till then I'll be going back in into this world, albeit at a much slower pace.

If you own a PS3 or PS4 this is probably one of the best games you will play, but I put it at a 9 because turn based fighting is not everyone's cup of tea, and there are some issues with transitions between combat and exploration. To me though, this is what an RPG should be. I would say the only thing that may be missing is the ability to customize your own character and have preferences in that regard, but it's the best RPG game I've played in a while.

I hope this is something they can fix with a patch because it would make the game soo much better. The game is very linear but with the sheer length of the game I can honestly say that I do not feel like any of my time was wasted so far. Everything I do in the game in in furtherance of the storyline and building my character. Compare this to something like witcher 3 where you are free to go most places and do what you want when you want. The difference is in an open world game you can get side tracked and waste time without improving your character in some way. With Persona 5 since you are under time limits and the way all the activities contribute to your character's growth in one way or another, I feel productive after every gaming session. This game is not for everyone , but I was quite surprised on how taken I was with this game, I love western rpgs but this is my first jrpg and I was skeptical that I would enjoy the new playstyle, yet the writing and various systems make the game really enjoyable. Case in point, why is Persona 5 good? Well let's start with the graphics - HOLD ON, I know you might think that graphics don't matter and I totally agree with you, however, Persona 5 has a unique style that makes the graphic stylish and very interesting to look at. The game's flashy, colorful, cel-shaded and incredibly well designed: the other game that just came to mind was persona 4 with its colorful environment, but persona 5 ramps it up to 11 and makes the game look beautiful, as well as stylish. I mean...just look at the intro, or at the choice option, at the menu screen: it reeks of "pop", something that reminds me of the 90s it's just incredible. Again, the only game that I felt this way was persona 4 and that game was already great in the visual ways.

How's the gameplay? It's turn-based combat at its finest, a system that not many seem to like because "it's too old", but Persona 5 not only uses it yet again to show that it's still valid but improves it, expands it and includes elements from previous SMT such as the demon dialogues to recruit shadows and, most importantly of all, better and non-randomized dungeons (although the random dungeon still exists, it's just a sidequest). The combat controls are much more simplified and much faster too, making you switch persona on a whim, add the fact that the combat was simplified by removing "damage type" (there was slash, pierce and blunt) and also improving physical attacks (they do more damage than before and miss a lot less), the game really shines through with ease.

Granted, I didn't enjoy how little the SP is and how quickly it runs out, and how hard it is to get items for recovering SP in general, but that's a nitpick at worst.

And while I won't spoil the story, I honestly found it simple yet interesting, very interesting...to the point that "I just had to know what was going to happen". I kept wondering what was going to happen after the next dungeon was over and while the game hints with its flashback scenes - another nitpick because I highly despise flashbacks - I still wanted to know what was going to happen to the characters.
Right the characters: I really love them, especially Morgana and how he's so sure of himself yet adorable at the same time. I won't lie: I didn't like Teddy in p4 for how "disgustingly" nice he was, but Morgana just felt more of a reliable character overall. The others are also pretty likable and very...relatable too: they're disliked by everyone, they're people who did big mistakes, they're people with difficult childhoods. In other words, they're misfits who struggle to get into the Japanese society and the MC has a criminal record too. It was very refreshing: unlike p4 and it's cheerful, the bright cast of super happy characters with no worries in their world, the p5 cast is yes cheerful and happy but has also to worry about their ranks and their place in society.
And as someone who has a mentality far different from the country he currently lives in (I did live abroad for few years while younger), I can totally relate too.

I want to add my nitpicks as well, with my biggest being them taking a lot from p4 in terms of time management: you can only go into the dungeon in the afternoon and do NOTHING at night "because you're tired", forcing you to plan far ahead of time. Doing the dungeon literally limits your daily routine in many ways: you can't study, you can't go out and do a bath, you can't create lockpicks (VERY needed), you can't even hang out with friends...nothing. So be ready to program your stuff!
Secondly, the game map is very...confusing at first and I honestly got lost quite a lot before being able to quick travel to my locations. I guess it's because of the camera being free but I won't lie that I found myself wandering cluelessly for the first 10 hours.
And third, the time for clearing dungeons is VERY SHORT: talking about 2 to 3 weeks tops and not only that, your time limit is shorter because you're supposed to do "something" BEFORE finishing the dungeon, which requires an additional day. Which means, DON'T REACH THE END ON YOUR LAST DAY, OR IT'S GAME OVER.

And now for a bigger flaw: the game doesn't allow streaming and while it doesn't affect me, a friend of mine does and I thought to add this up for those who are hardcore streamers like her.

With that said, go get this game if you miss the old JRPGs, those with turn based combat, great stories and rewarding system. It's not perfect by any means it sure is close to being it!

Persona 5 will steal your heart, and it wasn't hard as you will be giving it willingly.

This is the game that will redefine JRPG for years to come. I might be slightly biased on this game because I've been a Persona fan ever since it was just called Shin Megami Tensei and not widely known as Persona. But just when I thought they could not perfect the game anymore after P4 and P4 Golden, they came out swinging with P5.

It's difficult to make turn based combat amazing, but P5 managed to make that a realization. One of the common complaints we had with P4 and P4G was the dungeon crawler parts could be a drag. That has been improved with P5 as well. The dungeons now are even more thematic and even more fun.

The social links (they are called confidants now) are coming back in P5 and with a much bigger emphasize on it this time. Atlus has realized that the social activities and links are the major selling points for Persona games and it has been given the love and respect it deserves. An improvement from P4, your social links are actually bigger, have more impacts and you will have a bigger area of Tokyo to explore and do activities on.

Old school Shin Megami Tensei fans will be happy to learn that Persona Chat feature is back in this game. If you remember, this feature has been missing since Persona 3 and I could not be happier that they're back.

The entire UI and game interface felt like an experimental art by Atlus, but by god, they work wonderfully. Even the transition phase between screen has been done in such a masterful way that I can't help but smile watching them.

One thing that I do have to mention that this game wears its Japanese culture proudly. They are still a very conservative country that still mocks homosexuality and other things that they feel outside of the norm. The best part? Persona doesn't feel like they need to change that just to suit the justice warriors of the west. So, if you are easily offended by things that actually wasn't real (a.k.a this game), skip it. Even the game disclaimer will mock you about it. This is a game that was not afraid to push the boundaries of what the soft western society will view as unacceptable. Trust me, this game will drag you through the depth of human's darkness and deepest desire while you're kicking and screaming. Again, if you're too sensitive for those things like most are these days, skip it. Persona will not change to suits your new western standard.

Persona 5 will do to JRPG what The Witcher 3 did with open world RPG, redefines the genre and set a new gold standard on it.

If you're an old Persona players, or even just started with P4 or P4G, this game is absolutely a must buy. Everything that we loved about P4 has been improved and everything that we hated has either been reworked or removed.

If you're new to Persona or even a JRPG in general, there's no better game to get your hand on.

    Well done, Atlus.

By far the best game in the Persona franchise. It stomps all over 3 and 4 in terms of gameplay, (so far) story, and aesthetic. It's flaws are so minor (a long yet enjoyable tutorial section, slightly cheesy dialogue) that it does not affect my score.

also **** anyone that says turn based games have no place in 2017.

From reading the low reviews it seems some are, perhaps, just following the daily repeat and not exploring options!

I really mis the persona 4 freedom about improve your stats and walk around doing alot of things, improving links...etc.

The positve point is that the story is very interesting, and is quite cool since it is between past and present, so everytime you continue you wander what happened before you get in that moment of the future.

Gameplay is amazing, very interesting and battles have a awesome difficult level, it really makes very strategic the game.

This game has only just begun to Steal the hearts of its players who first got into persona 10 years prior with P3 (still the best in the series imo)

Because you see, I loved Persona 3 even more than Persona 4. Persona 3 was much darker and in my opinion told a better overall story, despite Persona 4 having better gameplay and an easier transition into the battles. That's telling. It means I enjoy a well told story more than a well played game.

But the hallmark of a good story is character development.

With that, let me quantify my 7 real quick.

Animation: 4 points. Things are smooth and subtle things added to the experience that you wouldn't have expected them to take the time on, like some gal crossing her legs or someone getting up from a desk and running out of the room. It feels fluid and natural. Wonderfully done.

Battle Mechanics: 2 points. I do enjoy the hide mechanic because it doesn't require a lot of effort or thought, simple button layouts, etc. I'm not a fan of the general battle engine, but it's not a dealbreaker, more annoying compared to the older games.

Controls: 1 point. They're simple, they don't overuse buttons like Breath of the Wild or Dynasty Warriors Next, there's no "gimmicks" that I can see. Just a basic use of the button X most of the time.

    And that's it.

First off you're looking at a 5-hour sprint before you can really PLAY the game. To be fair, 3 and 4 had lengthy intros too, but with those, they focused very heavily on character development so you could learn who people were before teaming you up. Here, you're just doing minutiae tasks like flipping signs from outside a door. I can easily see today's millennials getting bored and frustrated 3 hours in and returning the game.

Second, there are parts where you'll watch a cutscene, walk 7 seven steps to a load screen, then another cutscene. Or you'll fight one battle, walk 10 steps, see another cutscene. It's jarring. I like cutscenes but they need to do better with the transitions from battle to non-battle segments.

Third, the graphics are just too much, too "loud". They look like what you'd get if you allowed Amy Schumer to design the game. Fonts are blown out and difficult to read, colors are all over the palette with no real logic. I was the first to criticize NIER Automata for being too bland; this is too far in the wrong direction. I actually avoid the menu because I can't stand the way it looks - and fortunately, there's very little requiring you to actually go there.

Fourth, the cell phone mechanic is terrible. I'm sorry. I get what they were trying to do, but it wasn't done well. Why are you having to manually advance text messages?

Fifth, the music. It's not bad music, but it's a pale shadow of what Persona 3 was doing. "When the Moon Reaches Out to the Stars" just won't get out of my head 11 years after the fact. Most, if not all, of the songs in 5 are forgettable and too short.

This isn't a bad game. It's not. But having played the older ones I feel this was a step back. If you'd never played a Persona, you probably wouldn't be as harsh. I'll gladly say though, even if you don't agree with my review specifically, that there's simply no way it's a 10. Not in any universe I can think of.

I initially wanted to give this an 8, but I bumped it up to a 9 because the presentation, aesthetic, and execution is off the charts. As a normal user, I have only put about 10 hours into the game so far, but the experience has been great, the presentation is stellar.
What surprised me is that the story starts on a high pretty quickly, introducing some fundamental movement and battle concepts as a sort-of tutorial. Not until about five hours into the game it is that things settle down a bit and exploration and day planning starts.
Granted the framework of the game and the type of characters is very familiar to people who played previous Persona games, but the presentation is so much better. If I would describe the art style, it is similar to Atlus' puzzle game "Catherine".
There is now much more voice acting than e.g. in Persona 4 Golden, and it feels like a lot of time has been spent on the localization, so the experience is very polished.
From the experience so far, this it is a great JRPG title that is not afraid on taking on more serious topics like abuse of students by teachers and sexual assault that is tolerated by the surroundings, while also blending in more light-hearted elements.

Although this is a JRPG it totally bucks the trend of the genre. You will not be searching the land of Xania for the magic crystals to stop lord evil face from destroying happy town. In persona 5, the villains are everyday people.

Within the first 10 hours of play, the game intelligently covers the topics of assault, child exploitation and most importantly, stereotypes and the way we judge people on the stories we have heard about them/the way they look. I have never seen these kinds of issues explored in such a thought provoking way..... in any medium. The characters are fantastically written, to the point that they actually feel like people. I came to Persona 5 straight from Mass effect: Andromeda and the difference in character development is night and day. the characters here want to go the cinema! they want to talk to you about home work. They text you randomly about what's going on at the moment. They convincingly become your friends. I cannot stress how much i loved these characters. I can't go into specifics as it would be a disservice to anyone you wants to find out the intricacies for themselves but these people will get under your skin at some point in your play-through and stay with you

I thought i would put an emphasis on the story here as the gameplay mechanics have been discussed extensively in the reviews from sites like IGN, Gamespot etc. I wanted to get the things across that made this a special experience for me personally. So, here we go:
    .
    1. The most unique and compelling story telling i have ever seen in gaming. If you had the chance to go into someones thoughts and change the way they see the world, would you?

    2. A sense of Style that effortlessly blends Anime, spy movies, teen drama and acid jazz without skipping a beat.

    3. It feels like the developers loved the product they were making. Its oozes out of every corner of the game. Everything has a purpose, there is no fetch quest busy work here. Triple A western developers could learn a lot from Atlus. They have shipped a game that is finished. A rarity in this day and age. its reeks of play testing and quality control.

    4. This is the biggest point. Nothing feels any thing like Persona. I am suffering ( as i am sure many people are ) from open world game overload. The last 3 games i have played ( Zelda, Horizon and Mass effect ) have all had the big world map that you open and sigh at the sheer volume of pointless stuff you still have to tick of the list. Admittedly, Zelda handled this fairly well but every game seems to want you to collect 900 random doodats and visit 19 towers which in turn shows you another 90 things you have to find. I could not finish Mass effect because of this. I got the jungle planet and one of the first side quests asks you to find the missing cargo from a crashed spaceship. upon opening the map there were around ten of these i needed to find. I was supposed to be finding new settlements for the human race, why am i finding your ships lost DVD collection or whatever it is ? Persona doesn't feel like this at all. If there is a crises the party will feel tense, they will tell you that "now is not the time for a visit to the public baths, we are in trouble!" etc. It just feels fresh.

I don't want to spoil anything so i am going to stop here. Sorry about the random rambling about the game. It just feels special to me. I hope this convinces a few people to take a chance on something different. I promise you won't play anything else close to this on the current generation of consoles. this is a "once every 10 years "kinda game.

    Enjoy the ride

Persona 5 is a dream come true for jrpg enthusiasts. If you have never played Persona before, this is a good game to start you on the series. The confidant system makes you look forward to talking to each character you've met whether they are a party member or not and the moments feel rewarding with each skill you unlock.

The turn based battle system is a welcome return and is refreshing feel after playing the constant action rpg's that most series are adopting like Final Fantasy.

Stealth in this game kinda reminds me of moments I experienced in MGS and the game makes it clear that using stealth will reward you more progress within a "palace" which feels more rewarding than just running around and findiing a stairway to the next floor.

Getting other persona is better to than the random card drops you get like in part 4 because when you get a monster to beg for its life you can ask for it's power ( to join your team basically ), an item, or money. And if you want stronger persona you can fuse other weaker persona you have to make new ones that will give you an edge in battle most times.

Last but not least is the fact this game is very replayable with it's new game + which let's you carry over your characters personality traits so you can see what things your MC will say or do that he couldn't do the first playthrough.

A must buy for all jrpg lovers and PS4 owners in general.

You've got your normal expected bits: off the mark teenage "foul language", saving the day with friendship, awkward moments in romantic encounters, and some really zany gameplay moments. What Persona 5 (and the series overall) adds to this genre is a flushed out and compelling story with interesting characters. The turned-based battle system is rare these days as most JRPGs localized in the west have gone the action-route. Some people find turned-based games dull, but this game will make you plan out and rethink your next moves.

The graphic style is lush, full of style and tweaks that are very pleasing to watch. The English voice acting is great (as far as they go) and you do have the option to use the original VO which is a nice addition. The gameplay is smooth, deep and will punish you for making mistakes.

This game is really a production. It's entertaining to play and watch. When I played P3, P4 and now P5 there has always been a non-gamer in the room that gets sucked into the story. For my outdoorsy friend to remember the Japanese names of characters, and to actually care to see what happens next is just as impressive as my girlfriend getting emotional at some plot twist. Story-wise this game ranks right up there with The Last of Us.

To enjoy this game you need to be able to let yourself slide into the weeby anime style a little bit, if you do you'll find a game that really goes beyond your expectations and past the tropes. If you are looking to realistic graphics, hate the anime style and generally dislike JRPGs - you'll likely be too distracted to enjoy the story. This game goes beyond the tropes, but it does not change them - keep this in mind if the high scores have made you interested, but you haven't enjoyed JRPGs in the past.

This game was hugely anticipated for a long time, and the onslaught of delays made it seem like it would never be released. After playing it for 40 hours so far, I must say that it feels like they spent every moment of those years working on this game and polishing it. Every part about it feels like we've skipped a generation to get here. This is especially true looking at the gap between P3 and P4, and now P4 and this game. I've been absolutely blown away and delighted by every feature, especially the overworld. This game feels so lively, and makes P4 feel dated and limited in comparison. For anyone looking for an 80 hour linear JRPG with fun tactics, freedom of choosing how you play, and a nice story, consider Persona 5.

For me the main attraction of JRPG is the story, and Persona 5 did an amazing job in story telling.

I started the Persona series with Persona 4, and the game took a while to get me engaged. But once it did, I felt I belong to that town in the game. Persona 3 unfortunately never did. If not for Mitsuru, I doubt I could even finish the game. Meanwhile, for Persona 5, it got me in the first hour of gameplay. I am constantly surprised by how the story is planned out, in a good way. Only thing is that I don't feel the strong bond as I did in Persona 4 yet. But it will get there after more time playing the game.

Character designs are out of this world. I love the artwork of every single character in the game. I hope they keep this kind of artwork style forever for the series.

The music and graphics are amazing, and work very well together. For those comments regarding graphics being like 10 years out of date, I am wondering where they can find such good graphics 10 years ago... I honestly dislike all the debate on the frame rate, etc. As long as the game graphics look good and enjoyable to the player, there is no reason to care about such things.

Battle systems are like Persona 3 and 4 with little to no new elements. This is probably the only complaint I had.

Last but not least, I do feel there is not a lot of change from Persona 3 and 4 in terms of entire game structure. HOWEVER, that is the least of my concern. I want to relax and enjoy the game, not to constantly look for "new" things. When the game gets bored, then it is a problem and requires update. So far, I don't feel that way at all.

Overall, this is a wonderful game. For any JRPG fan, or someone who just wants to read a good story, Persona 5 is a must buy.

For a Persona sequel to work, Atlus have placed the burden upon themselves to innovate with each game. Persona 5 feels like a game that jumped 3 generations from Persona 4. While the story is of the same quality of past games (which is a huge plus), every other aspect is a huge improvement.

Persona 5 is a game that retains the massive scope of past games, but keeps it alive for the PS4 era, meaning that Atlus essentially had to work 5 times as hard to make the game retain its effectiveness as a modern game. The game will run 90-100 hours, and each of those hours is meticulously crafted and controlled by a massive variety of polished content. All of it, side content included, never feels like it distracts from the main themes or story.

This game should be celebrated and remembered for years to come.

The game makes you really feel like you are within the game itself, living out your daily life inside this fantasy world from doing menial tasks such as catching the train, eating, and cleaning your room. Persona 5 goes a step further by making you feel like you are living within an anime TV show - one that could feel a bit wacky at first, but really delves into character development, and heavy themes such as physical abuse, the consequences of rumours, and sexual immorality - all backed by an amazing jazz inspired soundtrack.

The JRPG element is also refined with added concepts of range weapons, a stealth factor, and overall crisp animation movements, but keep in mind that even though the game is classed as a JRPG, it is not even the core bulk of the Persona franchise.

If there were a few things that irked me a little was that movement and character interaction inputs within the game sometimes didn't feel as smooth as it could, but overall an improvement over an already established masterpiece in Persona 4.

While critics are working PR overtime to sell people on this exclusive title, it wears out its welcome extremely quickly in the modern era.
In an era where jrpgs are free on mobile/tablets, you have to do more then the bare minimum and sadly this game does not cut it in this day and age, similar to Tokyo Mirage Sessions.
Dated gameplay aspects, excessive filler and padding and the very questionable cultural setting/choices for regular gaming audiences in the West, make the game a complete drag. Music is also extremely grating.

Learning more from modernized jrpgs would have been a smarter move.

Do not let blind devotion to anime and anything "Japanese" otaku culture fool you with this one.

Save your money for Yakuza maybe, one of the few worthwhile japanese exclusives.

PERSONA 5 is one of the best JRPGs played in the past two years, excellent dubbing, unique combat system, very long but not boring process and shocking music, it is a miracle to buy it!

The best Persona game, one of the best SMT games and probably the best jrpg we will see this generation. My mind kinda goes blank when it comes to explain what is so good with this game, but i will try and add an unexpected remark at the end about a particular observation i have made concerning people reception of this game.

First, whether you like JRPG or not, you should really try to understand what kind of experience this game gives you.

The Artistic direction is probably the best i have ever seen in a game, the menu, loadings times, everything is done in style, and it really gives a relaxing experience while playing the game.

The music is really catchy, really good, and you will find yourself being excited to engage in battle just to hear it more, and even let your playstation on just to hear something from the game.

The story of the game is really intriguing and pretty deep, persona game are known for devling into psychology and inspired by idea like the collective subconsciousness, that reflect realities and problem that exist in our real world. it's a fiction that really go deep into actual, real life situation, while adding the fantasy/anime/relationship aspect around it to create a really strong and compelling narrative.

Let's not talk about the how much time you will play this game: The main story is about 90-100 hours, which absolutely monstrous and so far i have never encountered a longer single player RPG in my whole life.

The gameplay? As far as Turn based can go, this is one of the best system, it's strategic, fun and dynamic. Every action is assigned to a button, there is no menu scrolling, no "button mashing to attack all the time", it's very clean and well designed

The game is very story based, a lots of dialogue, that stay interesting because they teach you more about the world, help you learn and form relationship with others, or gives you a subtile hint about the general story of the game.

The difficulty is for everyone, you have 5 difficulty setting, i don't need to tell you more about it, you want a challenge? you will find it. You are totally new to the serie and don't want to be overwhelmed and destroyed? There is something for you.

I am obviously biased in this review as we are all subjective being, but a collective positive reception should help you make a better decision.

I do have to note something also: Many people will claim that this game is very "niche", or only for the chosen few that like anime and JRPG, and i would disagree with this.
even presenting the story, the gameplay element to a variety of people got people interested, and especially people that are not at all into RPG, i don't think this serie is niche, i just think it's severely Undermarketed.
I do strongly believe there is a "universal appeal factor" that exist within this game(somewhere in the collective subconscious) and that it just await you to just give it a fair chance.

An absolute masterpiece. Everything from the previous games has been divulged in and enhanced to create an intriguing work. Socials links have evolved in striking fashion and the combat is smoother than ever. Outstanding visuals and interesting characters make up the bulk of the story as it makes up the epitome of what a JRPG should be. One of the best RPGs ever.

For reference: I'm about 75 hours in and haven't beaten it yet.

Pros: + Memorable Story and Characters + The UI is incredibly slick, and the transitions are very stylish + Combat is a ton of fun, which builds upon past Persona games with the Baton pass and guns. Things get mixed up during boss fights as well (it reminded me of Trigger Commands from FFX, but executed much better).

+ Combat is a ton of fun, which builds upon past Persona games with the Baton pass and guns. Things get mixed up during boss fights as well (it reminded me of Trigger Commands from FFX, but executed much better).
+ Demon negotiation is also back, which will be a hit or miss for some people since the responses you need to select may appear random. I ended up liking it though, and it's a great feeling when you force a powerful shadow to cough up money and run away instead. Running away yourself isn't the only option anymore.
+ Dungeons are a huge step up from the hallways of Persona 3/4 (however if you liked this, it's back in the form of a huge dungeon called Mementos). The level design of these dungeons are nothing to brag over and don't do anything new, but it makes up for it with style and atmosphere.
+ Tokyo is filled with things to do and discover to the point where it's almost overwhelming. And the "Confidant" system is a pretty good evolution over "Social Links" of previous games.
+ Soundtrack and visual style is top notch, as expected.

    Cons:

    - There are a couple very convenient story coincidences and revelations. They sorta came out of left field. I found myself raising my eyebrows maybe one too many times.
    - A little too much..."Talking", I guess? For example, in the Velvet room, I don't need the attendants commenting on every menu option I press or every Persona I check out. Also, the protagonist says something every time I use my Third Eye (which is kinda like Batman vision). It's can get annoying and grating.
    - A few too many textures look quite poor, even by PS3 standards.

Overall: Persona 5 is incredible, plain and simple. Between the style, combat, and the story, there is so much to love about this game. This is a must play, so make sure it doesn't fly under your radar.

Listen. This is the first game I've given a max score that actually deserves the max score. This series isn't for everyone. It mixes absurdity/comedy with sorrow in a powerful way. If the blockbusters like Last of Us or Uncharted feel like a film than this game definitely feels more like a novel. You understand the motivations of every little detail.
Again, I'd recommend if you don't know

Persona 5 is an absolutely amazing game that convinces with its art style, music and story. It has anything one could ask for such a game and more. The turn-based battle system offers a wide array of opportunities. While it may not be everyone's cup of tea, it is definitely recommended to give it a go.

Persona 5 beats every other turn-based RPG in terms of production values, combat, story, symbolics, character design, music, pace and variety. 2017 is a great year for gaming and Persona 5 confirms this with a load of unmatched swagger.
