The story is great, and it does something that so many others in the genre neglect, which is making a truly morally grey villain. As someone who loves JRPGs, sometimes the villains are simple and evil, and there's no doubt that taking them down is doing the right thing, but Persona 5 Royal takes that idea and tosses it a massive middle finger. The music is memorable and so incredible, that I've been and will be listening to it years down the line. Its gameplay is absolutely unmatched in the Persona series, and may be the best turn-based combat experience I've ever enjoyed. I absolutely adore everything about this game. It doesn't hold the same special place in my heart as Persona 4, but this is in my opinion by far and away the best game in the amazing Persona franchise. This may be my favourite game of all time. The game has solid story and pretty good cast. It is like anime but better. But there is few bad parts in the story, it is not game ruining bad but it is there. It made me think less of one character. The cat can be very annoying.

The music is great and also somehow this game made the UI one of its main selling point. I never seen such a good UI and menu before.

Original Persona 5 was already my favorite game and this game is that but better. They fixed many problems and added new things compared to Persona 5. Thieves den is my favorite part of the game.

While I do think the game is 8-9 it did made me cry at the end so I give it a 10.

The first thing you should know about Persona 5 Royal is that it isn't a sequel or spin-off of Persona 5. It is, in fact, more of an expanded re-release of the original game with quality-of-life improvements, new mechanics & various additions to the story. So Royal does supersede the original game both in canon and as the superior version of the game.

It is, in fact, more of an expanded re-release of the original game with quality-of-life improvements, new mechanics & various additions to the story. So Royal does supersede the original game both in canon and as the superior version of the game.

As for thoughts on the game itself, the story is solid. The opening arc does a great job of easing newcomers into the mechanics & world of this game while also getting them invested in the plot & characters fairly quickly. The rest of the story is consistently pretty engaging, with the new Royal content being pretty seamlessly integrated with the original Persona 5’s story (until it isn’t, but at that point, it’s clearly supposed to be jarring for story reasons I won’t get into here) & building off of the original’s themes, at least to someone like me who didn’t play much of the original/vanilla Persona 5. The villains, while generally hate sinks with little nuance, are enough to keep you invested in the narrative & there are a couple of more nuanced antagonists later on. The game even manages to have quite a few tear-jerking moments.
There are some dry stretches though, with the section right before the Okumura arc being the worst part of the story, filled with Idiot Ball/Conflict Ball moments & generally less interesting events outside of maybe the Hawaii trip.

The Confidants, essentially a series of side-stories where Joker helps either his fellow Phantom Thieves or an eclectic set of his peers & down on their luck adults with their problems, are a mixed bag. Some have both an engaging arc & great gameplay benefits, some have one but not the other & then you have the ones that are completely useless and suck (LOOKING AT YOU OHYA). But this part of the game is definitely appreciated overall.

The combat is also a highly polished and smooth experience for a turn-based RPG. There is a certain flow & rhythm to the combat that makes even standard encounters engaging, something I can’t say about most turn-based RPGs. Although I will say that Mementos (a large, randomly-generated dungeon that you can access at almost any time) can get a little stale toward the end of the original game’s arc, but the new third semester added in Royal adds a new floor to Mementos that makes things a little more interesting again. Palaces on the other hand don’t get stale as there’s a lot more variety in what you’ll do in any given Palace & none of them outstay their welcome. My only real issue is that after the introductory Palace, none of the remaining ones (except maybe parts of the Okumura & Cruise Ship Palaces) really have much of a challenge when playing on Normal difficulty if you’re levelling certain Confidants (including ones you have to max out to advance to the third semester).

Outside of Palaces & Mementos, the life-sim gameplay sections are fun & interesting at first, but later on as you max out your social skills & Confidants, there really isn’t much to do. So that’s disappointing. Before that though it is a solid gameplay loop & I can see how it can become addictive.

As for the visuals, they really are as striking and distinctive as they are made out to be. It definitely has a sense of style & flashyness that sets it apart from other RPGs. And the music is also SO GOOD. Lots of bangers on this game’s soundtrack.

    Conclusion
Overall, Persona 5 Royal is a great JRPG that is an excellent entry point into the genre for newcomers & may go down in history as this generation’s Final Fantasy VII. But it’s not a perfect game. There are some balancing issues & a lack of things to do outside of dungeon crawling toward the end and the story has a couple rough patches, but this doesn’t stop it from being a phenomenal game that’s worth playing, especially now that it’s more accessible than ever.

A great game. The original was fantastic, but I feel the things it has added drag it down slightly for me. The DLC fights are really cool with the P4 and P3 main characters. Although they’re kind of pointless. The new story feels like a bait for a female protagonist in a way (Kasumi), with the new characters never really growing on me. The third semester’s ending felt like a downgrade compared to the original, with an overly gimmicky boss fight that feels like there’s only one strategy to win. With the rest of the phases being basically interactive cutscenes. They try to almost justify the actions of the new villain, which I didn’t understand. The added story of this upgraded edition simply feels like a cut below the rest of the games. Whereas P4G’s new content answered an unanswered question, and P3F does something similar but also shows the aftermath of the original. P5R tries to ask where the moral line is drawn for the new villain’s actions, while the fact there’s a dungeon by the game’s logic means it’s bad. It just feels like the new story is simply unnecessary and should’ve been shorter than it was. A good pickup if you liked the game originally or haven’t checked it out, but I definitely feel like they could’ve done more. Expand

+ Atlus's newer DLC methods suck ass. I love the DLC for this game, but the pricing, etc. is....eeehhhhhhh.

+ In an attempt to fix certain story things that feel unfinished in P5, P5R in some instances goes to far and feels like it loses the original message of P5.

+ Though I forgot to mention it with P5, AtlusNA's localization team is still doing the thing were they delete/change subject matter they deem 'problematic'. -- Don't do this. Censorship is bad regardless of what you are censoring, bc it can lead to people misusing that ability down the road.

If it's a flaw in the game, then let it remain a flaw. Pretending it's not there & giving the company money doesn't stop the company from doing that thing. It just makes them think you were ok with it enough to still spend your money on it.

Persona 5 Royal, the re-release of one of the best JRPGs of all time. Does it feel as good as the original? I personally believe it might even be better.

The story will grab you almost immediately as you are thrust into dealing with problems in your school. Your original team is effected by these issues and so you contend with one of the most vile human beings I remember playing against.

Immediately interesting and gripping. The story is then taken on a tour of issues facing modern Japanese society and does not let up. Well…

Ok I hate everything that happens around palace 5. Past the forced conflict and certain characters getting benched for the rest of the game I also dislike the palace itself. Some of the most annoying enemies, an annoying portal puzzle and the worst bossfight designed for this game. Luckily it saves itself by being followed up by arguably the palace in the game with Whims of Fate being the game signaling to the player: The garbage part is over, enjoy the best palace in the game.

On the topic of the OST, I finished the original P5 two separate times and Royal was my third playthrough of this generation's Persona. The fact that after three playthroughs I still absolutely adore Beneath the Mask serves as a proof of how goated the soundtrack is.

The newly added part of town offers more opportunities to bond with people and even give your teammates access to Persona skills they would not normally have. The re-release putting emphasis on technical attacks is one of the changes I enjoyed greatly.
    ¨
The added social links serve well to add more character to people like Akechi, who I never could respect in the base game. I actually like him after doing his brand new social link and finishing the Third Semester.

There are many more things to talk about but I will keep it brief. In the day and age of games coming out broken and unfinished Persona 5 came out a beautiful game that even stylized its menus. You have western AAA studios releasing broken trash every year and Persona comes out working, with stylized menus. If you have not played this game by now, do yourself a favor and have fun with this title.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. (New Reviewer Here) An awesome game, only complaint is that just one of the endings is just APPALLING. The "True Ending" that is a part of this remastered game, in my opinion just ruins the whole "Akechi is alive" tease was horrible, I really liked the mystery/undetermined thing about Akechi's fate, that was actually good on ATLUS' part. Despite my nitpicks and complaints, I think P5R is a great game, good character development, such as Ryuji's social link, the only Social Link I disliked was Makoto's (Other than Ohya, but y'know). I maxed out my party's social links and some others (like Iwai, the gun guy). This game franchise got me head first into JRPGs and I would never change that, I played Persona 4 first, due to the fact that I thought Joker (Ren/Akira) and P5 was overrated, now? I don't really care, this game is amazing despite my nitpicks.. I give this game an 8 out of 10.
    I would give it a 10 IF...
    Akechi's fate stays more mysterious/unclear
Social Links like Ohya's and Makoto's had more engaging things for me to pursue.
Social Links like Haru's to be more rewarding instead of just VEGETABLES

Persona 5 Royal allows players to experience the story they already love in a new way without losing any of the beauty from the original game. New and old characters get their chance to shine through and steal your heart, even the ones you never expected to. You’ll laugh, you’ll cry, and maybe you’ll even feel a sense of justice for the infamous Phantom Thieves in the end. But one thing you won’t feel is regret in picking up Persona 5 Royal, as it’s truly the best Persona title, if not one of the best video games, I’ve ever experienced to date.

All of the new additions and content mean that Persona 5 Royal is a clear upgrade to the original. New players should seek this version without hesitation, although vets may find starting the game over from scratch to be too big an ask. Either way, there’s no doubt that Persona 5 Royal sits proudly on the throne of Peak Persona… or at least it will until Atlus decides they can do even more with it.
