    I started playing the game at the time it was released, E IT'S SO STYLISH, I am currently playing for 15 hours and at the Madarame Palace, the new characters have already appeared and have had small changes in old scenes, this game is a work of art, a masterpiece.

    I adored Persona 5.     I adored Persona 5. It's my only platinum trophy for PS4, and I spent 300 hours and five playthroughs to reach that point. Persona 5 Royal is being marketed as a sort of 'definitive edition', so that's the viewpoint I'll be taking for the purposes of reviewing this, as well as it being an excuse to readily point out that I simply can't review this from a newcomer's perspective due to my longstanding fondness for the Persona series.

    The unique feature of current Persona games is its emphasis on interacting with other characters, so let's start there. In terms of improvements, there are a few small details: you can invite people to a couple of new (but ultimately fairly trivial) date spots, a couple of scenes have been very slightly rewritten for either pacing or tonal purposes, and you now sometimes get post-meetup phone calls from the friends with whom you've just been spending time. That may sound unimportant, but it provides an opportunity to boost your friendships more easily, and that's appreciated here.

    The reason for that is because you get more time to discover the entirely new friendships: the two main new characters, Kasumi **** and Takuto Maruki. Both shed new light on Persona 5's slightly one-sided moral debate, and given that progressing these social links is imperative for unlocking the new content in semester three, it's reassuring that their interactions with you as the protagonist make you really warm to them.

    The same can also be said of the third important factor for the new content, Goro Akechi. His social link is completely rewritten now, and if you progress his story far enough by the time the game catches up to the opening, he becomes an essential part of Persona 5 Royal's unique experience. The developers have clearly paid more attention to Akechi because of the fan sentiment towards him from the original, and whether you liked him or loathed him, his new material means you'll be glad to see a whole lot more of him here.

    As well as new characters, there are new areas. The main one that I can touch on without getting into spoiler-territory is Kichijoji, which is unlocked pleasingly early and provides a lot of things to do (Morgana is less insistent on getting your required bed-rest this time around, so you have more time to discover these things). It perhaps feels as though you're a little rail-roaded into getting the most out of Kichijoji due to the benefits of its establishments in Palace exploration, but those benefits are entertaining enough to make me not too concerned about that.

    And while Kichijoji's jazz club has me thinking about music: the new soundtrack is just phenomenal. Although the vast majority of the original soundtrack was excellent, there were a few tracks I wasn't so keen on (looking at you, 'Sweatshop'). The new tracks, however, don't have a single weak spot, and indeed hold some of my favourite songs from the franchise to date.

    Speaking of finding weaknesses, let's also touch on combat. More complaints have been addressed here, speeding up combat tutorials, increasing the viability (and you'll need it) of status ailments, and even improving the fantastic Baton Pass system. There are also a couple of new features within the Shadows you fight to offer more variety, but to be honest, the combat is a case of 'if it ain't broke...'.

    The story, then. It's phenomenal. Though there are a lot of twists and turns, some of which you'll see coming and some of which you won't, they don't feel inserted for the sake of a surprise. Instead, they pull you into a narrative that somehow manages to both escalate and personalise the stakes you're faced with at the end of the base game. It's not just impressive on a technical level, but full of moral quandary and impeccable character development that makes me reluctant to even say that there's a villain for the third semester, only a figure with a convincing moral argument and an extreme stance who is easy to sympathise with and, for me at least, impossible to hate. It's my favourite type of villain: the one who almost isn't.

    So why don't I want to play this again right now? Well, with Persona 5 we rebelled off into the metaphorical sunset and it felt easy to visit my friends at the start of their journeys again. Leaving Persona 5 Royal, the journeys have become longer, more complex, and asked some difficult questions of our heroes. They aren't the same people I encountered 113 hours earlier. They are more three-dimensional, more complete, and more affected, and it's very difficult now to go back to what they once were. In a way, that's how I feel about Persona 5 Royal: more complex, more complete, and impossible to go back from.    … Expand

    This game is simply amazing. If you love JRPG games, you must play it. I bought the original Persona 5 and did not hesitate for a moment to purchase the Royal version. I do not regret anything.

    Persona 5 was in my opinion already the greatest game ever made and Persona 5 Royal surpasses it in all it adds and changes to the already masterful base game.

    I obtained the platinum trophy of this game yesterday. And I can only say that was "AWESOOOOME!!!".
    This game has huge differences between the original, especially to the end. I cried again with the end of my favourite game, hahaha

    Full price for some small additions to the original which was just another boring, dated, turn based JRPG with stale mechanics, grinding, and recycled mechanics. Generally dated gameplay and the music sucks a**.

    The original p5 was an amazing game for a $20 price tag, this is remake for basically $40 more but that’s not why I’m mad. This game was marked not as a remake or remaster, everything I saw was framed as a new game! I am mad beyond belief, I’m literally 14 and I just spend all my money on this game which I already basically played.

    This game panders to the perverted and its gameplay consists of the x button, the story is a joke with every character having nearly the exact same story arc and then going brain dead after their arc is over. EA is better then Atlus, will never play anything by this company again.

No les miento, estoy "acelerando los textos" desde hace 2 horas y no me ha dado la posibilidad de guardar la partida por que hablan, hablan y hablan. Y claro, no tiene autoguardado :)

Royal should have been an expansion but they are forcing players to buy the thing at full proce again just for some extra content and QoLs.     This game might not be for me. It has longest tutorial I have ever seen. After about 30h the game is still telling me what to do. I dig the high school sim style, making connection to people and organizing my time but then comes the palaces and those goofy opponents and boring fights. It was a nightmare.

Ryuji is a delinquent and a bad person, so he spends all his time avoiding his own issues and your character just goes along with him. IRL, this person you drop as fast as possible, but in this game he's your bestie...because the universe told you so. So much of this game is, because the universe told you so.

    The writing is so bad, that I doubt it could pass a highschool class. I know that you need a variety of characters, but they repeat and repeat the same lines, just to fill out time. Very one dimensional with forced choices in gameplay. It reminds me of why highschoolers in real life are terrible to be around, they have no personalities, say the same thing everyday, and can't help their own glaring personal issues. This game is torture. You can skip entire scenes and the plot will not progress at all.

    Who ever wrote this must have made a note to repeat everything 3-4 times just incase the player forgot there are ways to reread every part of the story. Yes, you can REREAD the repeats just incase you have the attention span of a goldfish.    … Expand

    The best JRPG of all time. Persona 5’s Royal stylish visuals and intricate system holds mountainous amount of content, charm and activities, so much so you’ll never see it coming. The Royal makes an already outstanding game to an amazing unforgettable classic.

I't gives you a lot of freedom and activities, as long as secondary quests. Sometimes can get a little tedious in mementos, or if you have to "grind" to level up or get a perk. But overall is a very good game.

    However, if you are not into anime,    I love this game. The story and the gameplay is amazing, and the asthetics are another level. If you are really into JRPGS, You will like this.     After 230 hours of playtime, I can confidently say that Persona 5 Royal is one of the best PS4 games I have ever played. My biggest flaw with the game is that it's way too similar to the original, and the major new content will take a long while to reach. However the new arc is, without a doubt, the best arc in the whole game and is definitely worth waiting for. It has the biggestAfter 230 hours of playtime, I can confidently say that Persona 5 Royal is one of the best PS4 games I have ever played. My biggest flaw with the game is that it's way too similar to the original, and the major new content will take a long while to reach. But personally, I loved almost every moment with the Phantom Thieves again, and with the newcomers. Congrats Phantom Thieves, you've stolen my heart.

The game is an all around improvement over the original in nearly every way. The new palace has an incredibly interesting an emotional story. However, its ending was very weak. The final boss is 3 phases except 2 of them are pretty much scripted. Joker says one of the corniest, most out of place one-liners I've ever heard and apparently Akechi is somehow still alive even though it contradicts the entire final palace. Overall, despite its flaws, its still a great game that I would recommend to anyone. Not just fans of the genre.… Expand

    This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. My original 2 score was way too harsh, so here to amend that. A middle score is unusual for me, I either normally love it, or it wasted my time.

    It is not that it is bad, it just isn't very good either.

    The worst bit by far is the crappy American voice overs and the dialogue. It is just so bad. I find it very cringey a hell of a lot of the time.

    The art style just isn't that good. It quite simply looks ugly.

    The music is 70's porn music. The story is slow. The enemy design is poor.

    It feels clunky in everything it does.

    The combat is mildly entertaining but not great. So if I dislike so many things then why a 5 score? It has had a lot of love and care put in to it. Someone, or some team have worked hard. It's just that the team is probably a team of boring people. It isn't dark, it isn't happy, it is just very plain.

    It is a real trawl, everything feels so dragged out. I am often playing for 15 minutes, getting bored and trying to get to a suitable save place asap.

    It certainly never has me staying up until 3 in the morning unable to put it down.

    I don't hate it but just as BotW is the most over rated game on Switch, this is a very overated PS4 game.

    The definitive JRPG and a must play for any PlayStation owner. Beautiful story, revelutionary controls and a ui so good it inspred the whole smash bros ultimate design. This game adds enough content to justify being a whole new game while also creating a whole new timeline with new characters. If you want to know what that means go and play the game. I guarantee you you won't regret it

    This new edition took everything that was great about the original, and cranked it up to 11 with new and interesting characters, new music, and a brand new sub plot that ties in perfectly with the already fantastic storyline. It adds hours of new stuff that had me hooked 'til getting to the very end. If you missed out on the original. I recommend skipping it and get this package. The plot doesn’t change much up until the new 3rd semester, but there are a lot of new minor additions and expansions that make this game experience much better.     - El sistema de tiempo está muy bien implementado y te obligará a organizarte bien, ya que hay muchas cosas por hacer.

    - Gráficamente está lejos del techo técnico de la consola.

    it's just too good. It really fascinated me, despite playing persona 5 for more than 300 hours, I still feel the freshness and charisma that atlus brings in p5 royal.

    Persona 5 Royal, a game that I did not know I was going to sink as much time into as I did. I am a huge persona fan, even playing through the first 3 games, which are just persona 1 and 2 yada yada doesn't matter. Point is: I played through all of em and persona 5 was just not what I thought it was going to be. Of the new age persona’s, that being 3 and up, I thought that 5 was the weakestPersona 5 Royal, a game that I did not know I was going to sink as much time into as I did. Point is: I played through all of em and persona 5 was just not what I thought it was going to be. Of the new age persona’s, that being 3 and up, I thought that 5 was the weakest link. As a result of which, I was pleasantly surprised by Royal which I think changed alot of what I hated about P5. However, the controversy comes from if these changes warrant a 60 dollar game, and hopefully I will be able to answer that question in this video. As always, I rate my games on a 3 point rating and purchasing scale, and that grade is justified by the four categories of gameplay, art, music and story, with some intangibles thrown in at the end. The gameplay is very similar to that of the first game, with the key differences now being some quality of life changes in the sense of the guns and bullet usage, and morgana allowing freedom. These changes definitely sparked a vast improvement, and while they made me feel a little bit more OP than the first title, but the challenge is still there especially on the harder difficulties and later game content. When it comes to the art, this is not a 10, this is THE 10. This is the poster child for what art should look like in games of this caliber, the art is smooth, beautiful, not overbearing and adds to the ambiance of the setting and characters. So when it comes to the music, there are definitely some changes from the first game. There are more tracks now, and there's a new preemptive strike song called take over, I didn't like it at first to be quite honest but now im in love with it. Last surprise has remained as the main battle theme, for those of you that love the original work. The acid jazz adds to the ambience as well, and its lovely to see that the Persona series has continued that music style. Finally is the story, which is largely the same up until the new added content that you unlock by doing certain social links. The new social links definitely provide really good background, development and depth to the characters, but it still may be the weakest story of the new gen personas. The big controversy of this game is something I want to get to now: and that being if it is worth it being a new standalone title and not just some DLC expansion type. The new thieves den mechanic is alot of fun and great for completionists like myself to get statues and music of the events. The biggest issue with this is that you cant see your friends, so you cant really flex off your work. Besides that, theres the new added trimester which does add gameplay and some new characters as well, but it is very hard to say if it warrants a new 60 dollar purchase.
    After weighing everything, my final consensus is this: if you haven't played the original, this is the copy to get. Its advancements are noticeable from the first work, but if you have you can just watch the new content on Youtube and get the same experience. All in all, Persona 5 Royal was a very enjoyable experience, but the issue of it being a full standalone title remains. Its a solid 8.8/10, and I very much enjoyed it over the original, even if I do think that Persona 4 Golden is the better game all in all.    … Expand

    Improves off the base game in every way while it does get tiring seeing so much dialogue its fine because most of the time the dialogue is important once again the phantom thieves won me over with this masterpiece of a game and has become my favorite game of all time.

    Best game I've ever played. Amazing interface, amazing animations, characters, music, battle system and pretty much the rest of the game. I only played this version so I can't compare both versions. Recommended to every player who hasn't played it yet.

    BEST JRPG AVAILABLE ON THE PS4! Also, the best PS4 Exclusive! Much better than The Last Of Us, Part II or any other game full of woke agendas. This is truly a must play if you haven’t experienced any Persona games before.

    This is a modified P5 need I say more? Ok apparently I need to type more to reach the requirement, but honestly this game is really great, story, music, compelling action/gameplay and picturesque animations especially in the cutscene. Straight up perfects incarnate.

    I loved the characters and went out of my way to build my confidant with as many as I could, every one of the phantom thieves and a few of the outsiders. The battle system is tight and addicting for a JRPG, I won't spoil the story but it involves a major misunderstanding right from the beginning, that makes you want to see it though to the end. It took me about 150hrs to complete it, Even if your not JRPG fan, you will likely fall in love with this game like I did, there really isn't a whole lot to dislike here, if I have to complain about anything it would be a certain collectibles in each palace, they can sometimes be a pain to find and other than an item that carries over a new game plus serves no real purpose. Apparently there was cut content with them and that's disappointing that they weren't able to make it work.
    No game is perfect but there are some gems that come damn close, Persona 5 Royal is one of those gems, I can't wait to see what Atlas has planned next.

    The additions to this game over the original fit in so seamlessly you have to wonder if they planned this full story out from the start. The expanded OST is absolutely perfect and it's just amazing how they managed to make an already perfect game so much better. This is probably my favorite game in the past decade or so.

    Basically a better version of Persona 5, which was already at least a 9/10 game.
    Really loved the new characters, especially Maruki.
    DLC prices are disgusting and a complete rip off tho. Never buying those. Atlus really needs to improve their DLC practices.

    I find it hard to rate Royal because I already felt like the original Persona 5 was awesome in all the aspects but somehow they still improved it.
    The game is extremely addictive and one of the best games of the generation.

    This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Persona 5 is a great game, but Persona 5 Royal really touches up on areas that they really helps improve on the game play. It even allows to have access to some more character interactions then before with previous characters. If you do have a concern if you should play the original Persona 5, you don't need to. If your budget is something you worry about though, you could still go for the first Persona 5, but Persona 5 Royal is just a better upgraded version. The reason I am not giving it a 10/10 is because [Minor Spoilers] they do not really change anything from the first games story except add a new character and change Akechi's confidant from being story progression to doing it in your own time, and this isn't bad, but besides the third trimester, you could just play Persona 5 for the same story and a cheaper price. However this does not mean Persona 5 Royal is not worth it as it has some quality of life improvements and gets rid of some tedious parts from some of the palaces. The inclusion of will seeds was a nice touch palaces and gives you something extra to do, and if you're not a completionist you could just skip out on them, but the skills they give you for collecting all 3 in a palace could be quite worth it.

    Overall Persona 5 Royal is a great game and is totally worth checking out if you're a Persona fan or if you're looking for something new to try. Do note that this game is at least 100+ hours of play time you are looking at so you're not gonna finish this very quickly especially if you're new to the series.    … Expand

    A brave jrpg that deserves praise for the mature story, characters, design choices and compelling gameplay.

It improves upon it's weaker characters and fixes every issue that the original had. The game also adds more game play options for incentive. For example, the addition of dart throwing to increase baton passes.

    I bought the original game thinking meh i want to play something new and this looks cool i will try it, and my god it was worth it, this game has everything that you could ask for a JRPG in the best way possible: Starting with an unforgettable cast of characters, to a stylish way to present the classic turn base combat, it has one of the best soundtrack i had ever heard and, of course, the narrative, every single detail in this game means something, whether it is related to character development, plot development or world building, every development in the story feels so fresh and at the same time so natural that i just makes me want to play more.
    When i finished Persona 5 i thought"well... I think i will never play a game capable of hitting myself as a human being so hard". And then they announced Royal, my fisrt thought was that if the modified the original that was already a Master Piece Royal could only be worst, even with that i bought it because of how much i liked the original.
    Now i have finished Royal...     The most complete JRPG i have ever played. Amazing voice acting in both Japanese and English, improved classic persona battle system, the social aspect of persona is the best it has ever been and the characters are phenomenal.

I was so attached to every character and was pumped up for every Boss fight. The only issues I had was the slightly over sexualization of Ann and the shear amount of hours spent in mementos which got boring extremely fast, but this is truly a game worth calling a Masterpiece.… Expand

It's one of the few games I'd give a rating of 11 to, if I could, but there's still a couple things wrong with the game.

    Now, I don't like giving out 10's willy nilly, but this is definitely a game that deserves it, simply because it has gone above and beyond what I would ever have expected. The Royal expansion adds to that punch, but also somewhat takes away from it.

    My biggest gripe with the Royal addition is that the plot is completely detached from the base of the game, for reasons I couldn't tell you without spoiling, and even then... still couldn't actually tell you. It's very confusing and odd. In prior Persona games, the expansion gives an explanation as to why things are the way they are, why the story began, etc. In Royal, it seems more like a completely different story was attached to Persona 5.

    Don't get me wrong; the Royal addition is amazing and compelling. It's a game you can discuss the philosophy of with friends and even family. The story is deep, riveting, and simply suggests that you ask yourself a variety of psychologically intensive questions, such as the reality of the happiness you seek, among many other things, deeper and not, which I couldn't possibly describe without breaking out into a full-blown 50 page essay.

    That being said, as I mentioned before, it is very detached from the main game. If you've never played the main game, and strictly played Persona 5 Royal, then I imagine you wouldn't feel very weirded-out by this, which is why I'm still rating this game a 10.

    Persona 5 Royal, when viewed separately, as a game which never had a predecessor, is such a stellar game that you'd be pressed to find a fault within it. No character within this story is a Mary Sue, a problem which Persona 4's Golden remaster slightly suffered from; they're all deep and polished, full of viable issues which every person has faced at least once in their lives, of that I'm sure.

    Something I wish to make a note of his how impressive it is that Persona 5 Royal never suffered from any "Mary Sue" within the game. As characters with incredible, society-defying powers, they are immediately placed upon pedestals, capable of being your typical "Hero of Justice" who wishes to reform the world, yet they aren't portrayed as heroes through the player's eyes, but as kids who were dealt a real **** hand throughout their lives, and are trying their best to maintain their composure in a world which has rejected their individuality.

    When it comes down to it, Persona 5 Royal is not only a great introduction for all who wish to enter the world of JRPG's, but it sets a precedent for the future of gaming: This is the kind of story a game can tell. This is the kind of world a player can be put into. With music and video, it transcends books; with gameplay and achievement, it transcends movies; and with story and depth, it transcends a game made just for fun. The fact that this game has one of the most addictive and exhilarating combat mechanics I've had the pleasure of enjoying when it comes to turn-based combat is just the biggest cherry on the top that makes me love this game not just for the story, but for the gameplay, the music, the characters, and you know what? That menu screen, too. I've seriously never seen a better UI for a video game. I genuinely jumped out of my chair in shock when I opened my menu screen, went through the different categories, and watched Joker swinging around.    … Expand

    In my review for the original Persona 5, I already mentioned that for me it was one of if not the best game of all time.
    Around came P5 Royal, and loved it every bit as much, or even more. All of the new additions are welcome additions to an already massive game.
    Easiest 10/10 i have given in my life.

    i never played base persona 5 but this game was phenomenal, spent over 100 hours alone on the first play through and then immediately started a second one. i was never one for JRPGs before this game but shortly after i finished this game persona 4 was put on steam and i immediately bought that.     First, is it fun? And you bet your bottom dollar it is! Battles are engaging, and at times challenging. Persona fusion is a process of trial and error, but it's fun trial and error. It's fun to explore Japan and listen in on conversations and current events. You want to explore palaces completely because of how beautiful they are. As far a RPGs go, this is certainly one of the more fun titles.

    Does it have a good story? Again, the story for this game is beautiful. While I can't go into detail here to keep the review spoiler-free, my opinion is that the story alone is worth the price of admission.

    Are the characters memorable? Here I have a bit of contention. While the characters are indeed memorable in their own right, most of the characters' names blend for me. Most of characters stick in my mind as 'the reporter girl', or 'that evil teacher guy' until I get to know them better. Certainly enough to remember their faces, but their names, not so much. It might have something to do with the names being exotic for me.

    Are the graphics good? While I wouldn't call it 'state of the art', It's still quite pleasing to look at. The anime aesthetic is quite beautiful, but that same style prevents it from being a graphical masterpiece. The menus are a joy to thumb through, though.

    Is it replayable? While I haven't done so yet, I plan on replaying the game soon. There are so many ways to play the game that each playthrough is different. Will you focus on your relationships with other characters or your social stats? Which characters will you from close bonds with, and in what order? There's so much to do in this game, and I can't wait to do it all!    … Expand

    Persona 5 Royal allows players to experience the story they already love in a new way without losing any of the beauty from the original game. New and old characters get their chance to shine through and steal your heart, even the ones you never expected to. You’ll laugh, you’ll cry, and maybe you’ll even feel a sense of justice for the infamous Phantom Thieves in the end. But one thing you won’t feel is regret in picking up Persona 5 Royal, as it’s truly the best Persona title, if not one of the best video games, I’ve ever experienced to date.

    All of the new additions and content mean that Persona 5 Royal is a clear upgrade to the original. New players should seek this version without hesitation, although vets may find starting the game over from scratch to be too big an ask. Either way, there’s no doubt that Persona 5 Royal sits proudly on the throne of Peak Persona… or at least it will until Atlus decides they can do even more with it.
