I cannot stress how bad this game is. It truly is unbelievable. This is the gaming equivalent to a political scandal. They sold us tonnes of lies, got our hopes up and delivered nothing that they promised they would

Hello Games should be called Goodbye Games because this should be the last time they are allowed to make games.

This game retails for £45, and that's just for the basic release. Imagine all the poor sods who forked out on special editions.

I am surprised that people are not demanding their money back for this joke of a game. And guess what happens at the end of the game? Nothing. That's right. Absolutely nothing. I am not kidding. The aim of the game is to get to the center of the galaxy and when you get there nothing happens.

DO NOT BUT THIS GAME! Wait until its free on PS Plus or give it another week and if you know anyone that has it I guarantee they will be more than happy to get rid of it. They may even pay you to take it from them.

Shooting mechanism are bad/boring. Why bother resource gathering when resources are everywhere and abundant. With the latest patch downloaded to my ps4 the game crashed 3 times. You cannot fly into the sun so all the talk about real physics of planet rotation etc was wrong. For the development team I think they could fix the game and make it enjoyable by 1. Making resources hard to get/less abundant and survival more difficult 2. Making flight mechanics real with total player control in flight and in landing and 3. Have proper enemies defending some areas and include real physics and different gravity on planets and moons. The one mark out of ten was for some of the art direction as some of the atlus buildings are impressive when you first enter them. Expand

All the planets are the same. All of them. sure, one has aluminum and the other has gold and by golly this one has omegon! but its the same thing over and over and over again. You will get bored of it in roughly 5 hours. The combat systems boring, there's only 3 races of alien, and that's it. But what about a few positives? Well, the graphics are fantastic, and there's over 14 quintilian planets (even though they're all unfathomably similar) and thats it. Nice graphics and many planets. I was a rabid die hard fan of the concept before release, I was a defender of the product upon release, but having had the game for over a month I'd really like my money back, or at least a portion of it. The game is worth the $20 price point suggested by quite a few people but unless there are some earth shattering updates announced, and soon, I may just throw my hat in with those screaming fraud.

I still contend concept art seen in pre-release trailers do not raise to the level of "promised features that never manifested" and none of my disappointment for the game has to do with that oddly contemptuous online debate.

I also don't think the game is in anyway improved by adding hyper realistic planetary physics, the ability to spend uncounted hours slowly crawling from one star to another, the ability to fly into the suns of the different galaxies found, or the lack of in your face baked in multiplayer capabilities as in nearly every discussion of this game pre-release it was driven home pretty hard the experience would be a solitary one that only occasionally saw you stumble across another player.

    What changed my mind from rabid fan boy to disgruntled whiner is as follows;

The game is boring because of how little "procedurally generated content" actually manifests. In a game with no other plot points, story lines, or objectives this was the games only real hook or selling point so to find this concept is only robustly applied to an extremely small set of game details is a major let down.

The phrase "procedurally generated" is used with such a loose relationship to the actual definition of both words it's easy to see why people feel swindled.

The animals you're able to discover all share the same dozen or so basic body types with probably two dozen or more different appendages that just get randomly swapped around but even then only to a certain degree and the flora, ships, NPC alien races, colonial outposts, monoliths, ruins, and plaques all suffer the same problem.

Until it's pointed out the lack of flowing water, sand, or other obviously missing planetary features at first seem to be part of the randomly generated magic of exploration until you discover it's just not present anywhere in the game.

It's at first very hard to upgrade weapons, suit, and ship but then incredibly easy until you discover in an "infinite" universe you've essentially become nigh invincible which is fun but only if there's a reason to wield those abilities and sadly, there's really not, save for the occasional easy to beat NPC pirate ships.

You are constantly being attacked by pirates in space but never see evidence of them in the games otherwise non-existent story line despite constantly running into the same three alien races.

There are many beautiful details that could, and hopefully someday will, lead to rich story lines and sub plots that entice at first only to abruptly cease to serve any point or have any relevance when you discover they're just more repetitive aspects to a planet you will see varied slightly the next time you touch down.

    That's about it.

I would give this game a ten out of ten if there were any small indicators from Hello Games major content patches were even just being planned with tentative dates but the absolute silence from them since the beginning of September, when bug squashing patches were being released almost weekly with zero patch notes, leads me to believe the furious backlash from the gaming community has forced Sony to demand the bug squashing patches but otherwise shutter the entire foray into this game and its creators in an attempt to save face and minimize financial blow back.

You regularly come across some amazing vistas in this game, so, yes HG, we'll let you off with that one.
    Now gameplay.
To say this is a missed opportunity is a massive understatement.
    Let's start with the NPCs.
They sit, they move their heads and they make gestures. That's it. You never see them anywhere else. Not wandering around like you, not even shambling to another room.
Apart from interactions in the hut or space station they are glued to, their offerings create no tension and have no ramifications anywhere in the game. Pointless.
When your 'reputation' is increased via these encounters, it means nothing. If I'm favourable with one, the other does not try to gun me down in space (not that it's ever really made clear WHO is trying to do that anyway).
    Money. Useless.
The end game for this might be better ships or tech. The game gives the tech away, you can't buy it, only materials. the ships may look quite different, but none really offer anything approaching different capabilities.
So, you find a ship eventually that looks nice, has enough space, and that's that. No reason to change.
I could go on and on.
No missions, no tension, alien bases EVERYWHERE. Recycled noises, animals, plants, planets. No territorial issues in the local or galactic maps.
it's essentially an interactive screen-saver tech demo.

I hear HG games have announced "base building".
Why would I need to build a base when every single planet has millions of shelters on, and the galactic map is so unfriendly towards tracking destinations, or POI's or anything else.

    Very poor.

This game does not have an option to inver X-axis camera control, which means I can't properly control the camera, aim etc, thus this game is virtually unplayable. I've heard that Hello Games put a lot of effort in turning NMS into a proper game after disastrous launch, but it seems they decided to tell people who prefer a certain controll scheme to screw themselves.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. NMS feels like a cheap early access survival game rushed out and made on a small budget...except it was released as a final product for $60 after three years, two delays and with the backing of a major publisher...oh dear.

The two big selling points of NMS were the sheer number of randomly generated planets and the sense of exploration and discovery of a practically infinite number of worlds. The problem is while buzz words like "procedurally generated" sounds good on paper, the reality of that means everything looks and acts practically the same. There was not one memorable thing about any of the planets I visited or reason to ever go back. They all have the same generic resources, mined from the same generic nods, scattered about the same generic wastelands. You can't build any structures or settle down on a particular planet, only adding to the disposable and forgettable nature of them.

Perhaps not having the "ending" spoiled might have provided some sense of drive or purpose for me to keep playing, however I'd rather know there wasn't going to be a payoff to save myself the time and frustration. Some say the reward is in the journey and not the destination, but this is simply not a journey worth taking in my opinion. I went into this with low expectations after hearing all the controversy and even then I found it interminably dull and underwhelming.

Judging the game by itself I probably would have given it a 4 at best, however I feel it would be remiss not to take the marketing and PR debacle into account. I didn't pay much attention to the game leading up to release, but looking back now at all the documented interviews and demonstrations for the game, I simply cannot see it as anything but misleading at best if not outright lying at worst. Regardless of intention or malice Sean Murray/Hello Games should be held accountable for their actions along with Sony for allowing things to get out of control if not outright encouraging it.

I give No Man's Sky a 0/10 for being a boring, sub-par game and completely unacceptable business practices on the part of both the developer and publisher.

(full disclosure: mine was a rental copy, played for three hours straight before calling it quits due to myself and everyone watching being put to sleep)

While I’m sure developer Hello Games is still tweaking things and perhaps even creating more content for No Man’s Sky, the current state of affairs is a strong one. This galactic opus still offers an infinite amount of content for those who want to lose themselves among the stars, but now also contains a concrete throughline that will satisfy a wider array of players. It can be irritating at times, but it’s also full of stunning moments and the satisfaction of building a virtual life among the stars. Four years after launch, it’s finally a journey worth taking.

While No Man's Sky is engrossing for the first few hours, repetition starts to set in and the proceedings grow dull. The developers stated that they plan to add significant features such as base building which could dramatically change the game for the better. There's a promising foundation present, so it's possible to envision a more substantial game down the line. As it currently stands, though, our excitement to cross the universe faded sooner than we expected.
