Out of Solidarity to No Mans Sky... This gets a 10

All the Haters clearly don't read whats right in front of their face. The game is purely an exploration focused title in an immensely large, procedurally generated universe.

Everyone give this game a 10 so we can correct this ridiculous metacritic score

This game has many flaws. It is far from perfect, but above all highly overhyped : that's why some people are extremely disappointed about it.

I could write down whole paragraphs of what No Man's Sky is lacking, or even doing wrong, but that would be pointless as it would still deserve a 9. Why that, might you ask... For a simple reason : no game is even remotely close to what this game

I could write down whole paragraphs of what No Man's Sky is lacking, or even doing wrong, but that would be pointless as it would still deserve a 9. Why that, might you ask... For a simple reason : no game is even remotely close to what this game achieves. The only pieces of software that accomplish only parts of No Man's sky are titles like Space Engine, Starbound, Minecraft or Dwarf Fortress.

No Man's sky is a huge step forward in the direction of the game we all dream of : a huge fresh world to explore.

That being said, the game in itself is really good.

First, very moody : music and design come together to immerse you in alien nature. It can be really gorgeous, if you forgive its rough edges.

Gameplay speaking, there is always a feeling of rushing forward that I find extremely enjoyable, even when painstakingly scavenging ressources. Why not leave this planet you just began exploring ? Why not fly to the next ? Unlike other scripted games where you're tempted to look into every corner of every room in search for the littlest power up or secret, in No Man's Sky the world is so vast that you can choose what to explore and what to skip.

To sum it up, I think despite its shortcomings, this game is so unique it really stands out. Nothing is like it. I can't wait to play it again.

From the moment you leave the first planet you spawn in (which is different for everyone btw), you have an entire universe ahead of you. I don't think people realize the scope of this game. Each planet has a different climate, weather, toxicity/heat/radiation levels, etc. I struggled a bit in the beginning trying to learn the basics of the game. However, once I got used to the controls and tasks that I had to do, the game began to show its true colors.

You are a Traveler, embarking on an adventure that will literally take you across the universe. You will need to be able to mine resources to power/upgrade your exosuit, multi-tool (for mining and combat), and ship (shielding, weapons and storage) to help you survive on planets and in space. Each and every element you mine serves some sort of purpose in the game world. Some players may wish to mine and build a better suit and ship. Others may want to loot these resources from large AI controlled ships in space. Some may want to become a trader and sell their resources to earn more money. Some players may simply wish to wander around this literal universe. You can do all these things and much more. (You can name your own planets, systems, plants, and animals. Other players may also come across places where you've left your mark).
There is interesting lore in this game that I will not spoil. However I will say that the ability to learn the languages of the different races in the game is interesting. It pays off in many different ways, such as receiving crucial upgrades from a certain alien via the correct response to what they say/ask for.
At its core, No Man's Sky is an exploration game with survival elements inside of a vast universe. It is fun to play, and I cannot wait to continue playing it after I finish this review.

If anything, it's more. For me, the idea of wandering an endless series of planets, scanning and naming them and the plants and animals thereon, and then taking off and moving to a new one was thrilling! But there's even more to it then that. I've been dismayed at what appear to be a bunch of typically "hardcore" gamer types who are used to getting a game and powering through it to maximum levels and then lording it over the universe the game creates. That actually doesn't work in this type of game, in no way, shape or form. The keening, whining, raging and crying was intimidate and immense. From **** about the actual mechanics of journeying, critical to the casual style and tone of the game, to whining about the lack of a clear ending or point at which I imagine they could be dominant, or multiplayer (so they could show off to their buddies or measure themselves against them I guess) they could not seem to connect that this game was not the same as all the others they had played before. Instead they flooded fan groups where people who loved the game were busy posting pics and discussing their zen moments of exploration to howl at their boredom and hurt feelings, seeming to mysteriously hold us and the game company responsible for their lack of understanding of the terms "single player game" and "free exploration." Raining hate everywhere, including spamming review sites with how "boring" the game was, when they spent no time on planets, simply mining and running. Meanwhile I have already spent close to 100 hours in the game and while I have discovered and named 5 systems and multiple planets, I backtracked to to my home world to make sure I 100% discover it and plan on doing that for each planet in each system I have discovered going forward before moving forward on the Atlas path. This game can last a lifetime if you let it, enjoy it, savor it. But if you have no imagination, or are a "hardcore, elite gamer" look elsewhere...this game is NOT FOR YOU! Expand

This is not the game for the COD generation as this requires patience and a little role play on behalf of the player. Its a pity that this game pushes so many boundaries yet it will be remembered for what it doesn't have rather than the imagination and freedom that it does have.

At time of writing Devs are already on patch 1.07 and I can only see the game improving as it gets more refined and polished. They have already significantly stabilized and balanced the game where required. Then there are the new features which I hope will be added in time. A lot to look forward to.

I bought my PS4 in anticipation of this game, while waiting for its release I have enjoyed a couple of other titles, this has not disappointed me one bit. I had realistic expectations and grew up playing some rather innovative, if sometimes crashy and glitchy old 8 & 16-bit games. It's huge, so don't expect to get to the center of the universe in one day. In fact, don't expect to explore a planet in one day.

It holds your hand very little. You start crash landed on a planet you know nothing about and your treated as such. Your options are to figure it out on your own or to take to the internet. I suggest you figure it out on your own unless your really stumped.

It gets repetitive. You're trying to get to the center of the universe by hoping star systems. So, you gather resources as you explore planets, power your hyperdrive and move on. Rinse and repeat.

There's a TON of beauty in the midst of the repetition. Every planet, animal, alien, plant, ship etc is unique. Learn to appreciate it! T

he lore is really good so and I'm sure it's different for each race that you come in contact with. So far I've come in contact with a warrior race and a scientific race. Both are very different in how they approach and interact with my character.

Push though the mundane. There is repetition, but once you're a few star systems in you begin to see planets and alien races change. It gets more difficult and interesting. Rare materials become more commonplace. Keep going!

The game is half a GB! This alone makes the game worth $60. It is a work of mathematic art!

So, I'm sorry if this game isn't the conglomeration of every good part of every game you've ever played. You're not going to find that in No Man's Sky. What you will find is a universe to explore that is full of beauty, drama, mystery and a healthy dose of repetition. It will change over time. More will be added, bugs will be fixed. Remember Diablo 3 when it first came out? Look at it now. It's amazing! Given some time No Man's Sky will be amazing too. Right now it's just good, which is why I gave it an 8 out of 10.

To those complaining about the repetitive nature of the game-play: that comes with the territory of a procedurally generated games. It's simply impossible to create a game that builds itself without repeating elements - you're necessarily trading attention to detail for scale. This same issue is present in every other procedurally generated game out there, from the old-school roguelikes up through Elite, Binding of Isaac, and recently Necropolis. For some reason, NMS is catching this criticism much more-so than other procedural games, perhaps because many would-be NMS players were attracted by the hype and hadn't had much experience with proc

My issues with the trending outlook on the game is the increasingly common use of 'it's boring' or 'there's not enough to do!'. Thing is, for some gamers the same criticism can be leveled at the likes of Overwatch, Hearthstone, Rainbow Six to name a few. Now I'm not saying these games are bad, they serve a purpose for the people that like that sort of thing however if you don't...then the enjoyment you'll get out of those games is slim pickings.

That's my reasoning for the high score I'm giving No Man's Sky. I had no pretence or hype train tooting going into this game and frankly the main thing that drew me in was the soundtrack. Having sat down and played it though I can attest to exactly who this game speaks to and why some of its limitations are okay.

Having played the game with someone who is somewhat 'casual' when it comes to gaming the first thing that struck them was the ability to explore and craft things (however limited you might suggest those mechanics are) without the imminent threat of being tea bagged by enemies and having to learn and be good at whatever combat mechanics are in the game in order to compitently survive. For some people that's all they really want from certain games.

I fail to understand why it's kind okay for certain genres to be unmistakably niche and be reveld in because of their 'gameplay mechanics' however when something comes along which is perfect as a chill out game or something just to enjoy for what it is.

The mechanics might be repetative for some but for other's it's therapautic and satisfying. The way some people have been carrying on seems outright unprofessional.

In short, go into this game looking for a chilled out experience which can be quite eye opening and fun if you let it be.

Here I could amble leisurely across an endless, psychedelic universe, admiring the local flora and fauna, and engaging in the occasional bout of space combat along the way.

And I enjoyed that experience. I spent many happy hours flitting serenely across Hello Games’ universe, appeasing my adventurer’s instincts. I was mesmerised by the vibrant, stylised sci-fi visuals, the ambient soundscapes, and the gentle, soothing rhythms of exploration, discovery and documentation. There wasn’t much to do, as such, but it took a long while before the thrill of endless possibilities — and the raw excitement every time the clouds parted to reveal another unknown world — began to fade.

Personally, though, I find NMS to be relaxing, awe-inspiring, and totally different than anything I've played lately.

While a few mechanics could be explained in-game better than they are, once armed with the right knowledge you can settle in for some grand space exploration and some occasional laughs from the resident aliens.

The science path (scanning life forms) is quite difficult early on and the rewards really suck for it. Can take forever to track down all the animals you need for the planetary bonus which is pretty meager. So you'll need to do some some trading and or mining and or crafting on the side to stay afloat. The good news is that all of those are well implemented and money is easy to make once you know how.

Could be that not everyone will love it but I suspect you'll know if that's you or not. If you enjoy survival games and sci-fi this game is so good it might ruin your life. Especially when you land on your first planet with seriously funky wildlife - for me that was the second planet in my fifth system. Giant flying flukeworms. enormous tick monsters with tentacles everywhere, etc. etc.. That's on the edge of the galaxy too. It's supposed to get weirder closer to the center.

    Must get back to playing!

They are right in saying that every planet is almost different, the only differences I see in the lighting and the texture. This is just the type of game for me, Open world with nothing that pressures me to do something, which has always been my problem with the genre, for example in Skyrim I always felt Pressured to go straight to the quest objective without deviating from that path but in No Man's Sky I can do what I want without feeling like I should be doing that "Important" quest that needs to be done now. No one say's you need to get to the centre of the universe because if you don't do it the Universe will end or something else to that same effect, It's like "Hey Man the story is in this direction but you can do some completely random **** for as long as you want, i'll wait". I enjoy the flying mechanics and love customising bases and going around in the vehicles from the new patches. I don't mind mining, after all I've played minecraft for over a few hundred hours. but one problem I have is that there isn't enough sentient life on the planets, a few outposts here and there but otherwise nothing, If you say this system is controlled by the Gek then were are some cities or at least towns, but that doesn't bug me all too much. The tutorial is completely reworked and it introduces core mechanics earlier, like bases and freighters (I hear you get your first freighter free of charge, so that's neat).

They also reworked the enhancement systems for weapons and ship upgrades. It makes more sense now, at least for me.

Textures and procedural generation have been improved, along with new animations and a character model with full customization. You can play with other races, too!

Yes, I can see how some could find it repetitive or boring, but no game has ever so perfectly captured the feeling of space exploration, and even after ~20 hours of playing since release, No Man's Sky continues to feed me surprise after surprise.

Most of the planets are barren or toxic. Most of the creatures are unremarkable or boring. But just when I find myself getting bored of gathering resources/crafting on barren hellscapes, I'll stumble across a lush garden world, or an ocean planet, or a panther-dragon, and find myself audibly yelling "Holy **** at my TV screen.

Its easy to think that exploration in NMS is boring until you realize how many secrets are hidden beneath the surface. Many planets that have, at first glance, prompted me to say "Oh look, Mars again" have shown to have something cool - extensive caves systems, incredibly cool plants/animals, rare resources, or hostile sentinels. These experiences are rare enough that you don't start to have them until you have played continuously for a long time, but amazing enough to make the overall experience incredible.

The truth is that if you are someone who loves space games and has always dreamed of exploring the cosmos, No Man's Sky is not going to let you down, whatever legitimate complaints people may have. It just captures the 1950's sci-fi feeling of lonely wandering in a strange galaxy so perfectly. You will recognize its many flaws and love it all the same.

A lot of people are advising you to ignore the negative reviews, and while they should definitely be taken with a grain of salt (I personally bet at least a few of them are written or given by people who aren't going to or can't play the game), definitely read some of the more thought-out ones, because this is NOT a game for everyone. Hell, it's probably not a game for most people. But there's a lot of people out there where this might be the FIRST game that's perfect for them. It's simple: it's a very heavily economically- and scientifically-based space/ground exploration and trading game with frequent but optional space combat endeavors. While managing to stay fantastical and very sci-fi in its universal design, the game is also very realistic, and can therefore be very tedious at times, and requires you to be very intelligent in your techniques to store, trade and upgrade items, tools, ships, etc.. It's very DIY. And that's precisely why I love it so much. Now, wether or not it will hold up to hours upon hours of playing I'll have to wait and see, but at well over 10 hours in I can say that I'm not feeling any sign of losing interest.
Pretty much, think of No Man's Sky as a combination of survival mode on Minecraft with the space stage of Spore, and make it about a couple trillion times bigger, and you've got something along these lines.

    The good:
    An amazing technical achievement.
Some of the best scenery I've ever seen in a game. While arcadey, flying is fun. Exploring planets has resulted in some really cool and interesting moments. The Meh: Inventory UI Please let me automatically refill charges if I have the mats on hand Waypoints please!? Texture pop-in can be a little weird and ugly when you are moving

    The Bad:
    The Galaxy map

All in all, playing this game for what it is, it is a great game. It delivers exactly what I wanted out of it. Flying around, checking out things in space, in a relaxed environment. When I want to get dirty and actually feel like I am flying, I have Elite for that, but when I want to chill and take in all the visually amazing things in space and have fun with out having to get out the HOTAS, NMS is it! It's perfect for that hole that needs filled.

It's not with out its own problems and quirks and there's definitely some things that need addressed, like the galaxy map, and things added like some sort of base building, but I got my $60 out of it in just the first planet.

I was not going to write a review here, and if I'll have to, I'll give the game a deserved 7. The game is so unfairly bashed... it's fun to explore, graphics are good enough, and you know what? On my very first planet, I got MOUNTAINS and CAVES to explore (yes, these things are said "non-existent" by the "0 to 5"-people).

Give the game a chance, it is really atypical and very pleasant to travel.

Game is amazing, pretty much exactly what I thought it was going to be.
Everyone that is giving it anything lower than a 6 didn't manage their expectations, the game sets out exactly what it said it was going to do and it does it well.
The only frustrating aspect is the constant inventory management and that gets better as you go.

I wish i could stay on one awesome planet I discovered and just screw around have fun and so screw the center of the galaxy this planet is filled with gold heridium zinc iridium plutonium , just everything i need, so why cant i stick an outpost here and be able to have just a tad bit more permanency? What is irritating is why even fly through the cosmos they could've have easily gave me a play style of residing on a planet for longer but instead i have to give up all my hard work over and over so that it feels like i don,t even wanna look at anything any more since im practically obliterating each planet I explore by never visiting again, the 8 is since i am bringing up the score a tad but not witch any kind of 10 review, they are speaking of adding freighters and bases however it should have been day 1, and things like that would have easily brought hours and hours of gameplay, space stations buying things and colonizing even to the slightest degree would be sooooooo badass, on a side note I shot a whole in a random astroid in the middle of firggin no where came back to it hours later and there it was.... THAT was amazing for some reason, hey great base game add some cool permanency features and it will be great, and i know its about EXPLORING im just more of a builder and I don't care about moving forward at LIGHTSPEED I'd much rather conquer the galaxy at a snails pace personally Just adds more depth and after I'm done like im satisfied with the amount Ive done ill head out, but im at the point to were im like why even explore theres too many planets im going to see and no point to it, i put my mind in wonderment mode yes but its like i find myself exploring less and less cause i know im gonna just space jump repeatedly for a minial cost of easily found elements, RIP my awesome planet Weverflow wish i could jump back and hang out there with some sort of space jumping facility or whatever it would take like a warpgate and i could move it slowly were i go so id have an anchor for myself, thats all this game needs, Im hopeful Expand

Now, I've only played about 6 hours total and yes I could see where the novelty won't last forever but I'm having fun and still have lots to try. I actually like the alien lore stuff and the language discovery. Sure I want more variety in planets and life forms but honestly I'll bet that comes in patches and DLC later.

It compares most directly with Elite Dangerous. That game is ultra-realistic in flight, but you can't really do anything interesting on planet surfaces. NMS has arcade-like flight but you can land and walk around. Both games are good in their own way, but even if the two developers combined their experiences it still wouldn't be for everyone. If this isn't your type of game, just don't play it.

I rate a game's value based on the cost divided by the number of hours I enjoy playing it. A theatrical movie costs about $12 and I get 2 hours of enjoyment so that's $6/hr. I'm just scratching the surface on NMS and my $60 @ 6 hours has cost me roughly $10/hr so far. By the time it gets old it'll probably be pennies an hour, so in my book that's a "good deal".

I will say this is exactly why review embargoes are a BAD idea. With a highly hyped game it encourages SOME people to get the game sight-unseen and then hate it and rant. If reviewers had received their copies a couple of weeks ago they could have published reviews explaining that it IS a resource gathering game and that the gameplay is simplistic compared to something like Elite. Then people who aren't into that sort of thing could have decided it wasn't worth their money. As this was handled though, a lot of people are going to feel burned (thus the review backlash).

I can agree with just about all that I have read both here and on other gaming sites. For me it's a game where I'm truly feeling the "you get out of it what you put into it" vibe - AND, if you had expectations, as "No Man's Sky" was hyped more then this summers blockbuster movie "Suicide Squad," I can see why some are disappointed they didn't become space pirates who could meet up with other people day 1. It's vast, almost daunting in scope and it has a bit of a learning curve with how you outfit your multi-tool, ship and suit. However, it is very rewarding if you take the time to tinker and explore your surroundings. If you are looking to explore planets, and I mean SERIOUSLY explore, then the game is going to be perfect for you. If you are looking for fast action, then you are going to be severely let down. If you're a casual, "I play minecraft because there's no rush" type of person THIS IS YOUR DOMAIN. You belong here! You'll never run out of sights to see, things to do, even if things become kinda monotonous, there is an overall goal to achieve. Reach a certain level of units, upgrade your ship, upgrade your mining-tool, get to the center of the universe.

Sounds simplistic and straight-forward right? Not at all. Upon leaving your first planet you're tempted to sell some supplies and work on getting the parts for your hyper drive. In this time you'll be given an option at an Alien Monolith. "Follow the path of the Atlas" or "Explore freely". Following the path of the Atlas will lead you on a huge journey through space-time itself through many star-systems on a "loosely guided" zig-zagging story of alien archaeology, hallucinations and discovery.

Over time you'll find yourself annoyed with the repetition, but all I can tell you is, chill out. Smoke a bowl. Relax some more. Explore.
Graphics: 9/10, It's a beautiful game but currently has been plagued with framerate issues and stuttering. (not for me)

Sound: 8/10 INVENTORY FULL gets annoying very quickly. Wish there was variation in suit technologies voice. Aside from that, solid sound dev.

Gameplay: 8/10 Game CAN & most likely WILL become monotonous, but that's part of the fun. In real life if we were to explore space, many planets would be barren rocks, much like mars, venus etc. With this in mind, this is a very overwhelming universe that you'll never run out of things to do in. Every planet is planet sized, every star system is system sized. This game is exactly what we were told about the whole time. Can't complain.

OVERALL: 9/10 I was always hyped for this game and usually, hyping up kills the experience for me. Not this time. I thoroughly enjoy this game and intend on getting about 100 hours over the next week. If you do some research, the shader cache is what's holding the game back, but the longer the game runs the smoother it runs. Upcoming patches will attempt to remedy the framerate issues many players are experiencing as well introduce new game mechanics such as base building, new vehicles such as space freighters and "easter eggs" involving multiplayer..... Whatever that means.

SOLID game. GREAT INDIE game. MOST ambitious game of the decade.

While I’m sure developer Hello Games is still tweaking things and perhaps even creating more content for No Man’s Sky, the current state of affairs is a strong one. This galactic opus still offers an infinite amount of content for those who want to lose themselves among the stars, but now also contains a concrete throughline that will satisfy a wider array of players. It can be irritating at times, but it’s also full of stunning moments and the satisfaction of building a virtual life among the stars. Four years after launch, it’s finally a journey worth taking.

While No Man's Sky is engrossing for the first few hours, repetition starts to set in and the proceedings grow dull. The developers stated that they plan to add significant features such as base building which could dramatically change the game for the better. There's a promising foundation present, so it's possible to envision a more substantial game down the line. As it currently stands, though, our excitement to cross the universe faded sooner than we expected.
