My experience with NMS has been a net positive. It's gorgeous. The music and atmosphere is very compelling. I even enjoy in those moments when some feature of the game lets me down or doesn't take me far enough that HG seemed to be heading in a certain positive, creative direction. For example, much of what doesn't work seems to be part of a larger idea that they were trying to ship but couldn't, which has some kind of trace appeal for me. It's one thing for a game to be broken and incomplete without direction. This seems to be a game launched early as a service to hype-biters, as well as a game that can be patched into pretty effectively to make good on some pre-launch promises.

I love the look. I love the feeling that I'm in a deep, sprawling, endless universe. I lightly agree that the early game inventory management is a little pinched, but it graduates pretty quickly if you make sense of the stuff you should be looking for to upgrade your situation. I'm a fan of how playful the flora and fauna are presented to the player. The rhythm of visiting planets and experiencing vastly different terrestrial situations is nice. There are moments before breaking into the atmosphere of a world that are really full of a unique wonder. What could be down there?

The bad. Repeated content isn't so hot, and I find this to be a clear issue with the NPC characters. There just isn't really enough there for me to grab at fully enough. At first, the whole game felt like this loose amalgamation of Star Control II, EO, Wing Commander, and Red Faction (to name a few). I encountered lonely aliens at far-end outpost worlds, and it felt like something really special. Now that I'm a few hours in, the magic is dulled. You can only encounter so many aliens needing some kind of arbitrary amount of X material or prodding reaction before it just isn't that fun anymore. Throw in the idea that there are a myriad repeat schematics to be had from said tasks, and you're just better off analyzing alien plant matter.

    Honestly.

Space stations also need some work. Tied in with the idea that the repeated content just doesn't really work is the idea that the sole purpose of space station thus far seems to be waiting in the docking bay for NPCs to land so that you can buy up their cheap materials that turn a buck. Add in the idea that you can be sitting in said docking bays with multiple instances of the same character, and you've got yourself a gaming situation that feels a little rushed.

All told, I love the game and where it seems to be headed via future patches and so on. I don't care at all about multiplayer and the games apparent lack thereof. In fact, I feel like the game is better for having no human interactions whatsoever. I don't mind the flying, so long as the flight axis is inverted. The combat is a little basic and weird, but it's passable. Space combat is specifically satisfying when you get into a groove.

Altogether, it's an 8/10. The art direction takes it a far way, it has some room to grow, the exploration is unparalleled, the product taken out of the context of the hype and the pre-launch promise ring is impressive.

Great game. I'll play it for a while.

I have played 30-40+ hours in this game. I realize it's not for everybody, and that some people won't like it - not just because it didn't live up to the hype but because it isn't a game for everyone. There's still things I haven't done. Perhaps the best way to explain it is this quote by Sean Murray: "What we did set out to do, for just one moment you play the game, you land on a planet and you feel embedded there, that this is a real place. It's something you've discovered for yourself and you have a moment of wonder, and for me that is unique to games that we can do that and I think totally justifies the game." If that sounds interesting - this game is more than worth it. Expand

It's unfortunate that this game falls flat on it's face from the get go. It has MASSIVE potential to be an amazing Space Faring Sim on PS4. The folk at Hello Games did a great job, but I feel the game is not finished, yet alone half finished.

The hype surrounding this game was it's downfall. Many items/features/options that were shown and stated did not appear in the final release of the game. I hope they are coming (and for free, good to deliver on what you promise). I plan to hold on for a little to see where this takes me.

So far, it's a game I play when I am tired of the violence of the other games I play. Something to chill with in the evening, keeping me busy exploring the systems I have already discovered. Not something you can play for hours and hours on end like most other games.

The foundation for an amazing game is laid, let's see if Hello Games decides to build on it, or leave it flat.

The repetitive side isn't a problem since there are so many ways to evolve in this almost infinite universe. You feel lonely, right, but that's exactly the point : you probably are the only human in a remote corner of the galaxy, surrounded by aliens that you don't understand.
The immersion is incredible for those who can appreciate that, for those who doesn't want action everywhere, scenario guidance, for wanderers.
Still, the game needs some improvement. Ergonomic like marking a location, having aliens walking in space stations, and esthetics's like having a solid solar system with ... a sun, space events like asteroids belt, and more interactive fauna like in the trailer. It could also be fun to see species already discovered on other planets. But these details don't mess the game.
So, before buying this game, think twice to the kind of player you are. If you recognize yourself in what's written above, don't hesitate. If not, just never buy it.

My back ground is in Computer Science and Philosophy and I'm also an avid student of science so I am sympathetic to this game and I can easily get lost in it. I really appreciate the technology here as what Hello Games has done will have a profound impact on the future of video gaming forever. Hello Games have delegated some of the responsibility of game design to algorithms. Not an original concept, but damn, it's the size of a universe. As some one familiar with computer programs, I'm amazed this game even works, let alone provide a gaming experience of any kind. I do agree this game was over hyped, and is not quite what anyone thought it would be; but for the love of Zeus, it's only a team of 13 people! So far, many believe this game lacks depth and is way too tedious. I can certainly see that and this game is not for everyone or even the majority of people. I feel that if you have a scientific mind, then you will appreciate this game(but that is not a requirement for enjoyment). The wonder of discovery, the awe-inspiring moments, and the challenge to try to come to grips with the enormity of the universe is why I love No Man's Sky. It accomplishes what good Science Fiction does, inspire future discoveries and innovation. It is overpriced for what it offers considering what the majority of people want from a video game, but it is worth it for me. A game with a deep story, great combat, graphics conducive to immersion, and choices that truly matter is something I and many other gamers adore and crave. This game doesn't nail all of that and I understand the feeling of hollowness people feel about this game. They want more. That is a feeling I can respect. Play his game casually, in the dark, with some good quality headphones (if you can) and you may appreciate it more. I also love sharing what I find with my friends, but I suppose good friends can make anything fun. However, it provides the feeling of being a explorer, which is one of the beautiful parts of being a human and a trait that was once celebrated in America. This game is a bit ahead of the curve in some areas but does fall short in others. I am excited to see what else they add to the game and what other games are going to be like that are inspired by this one. No Man's Sky will contribute a lot to the video game industry and the scientific community as a whole. It is not only a game, it is a computer generated experiment and the users are the observers. For now, I am content to spend a few hours every now and then exploring a universe sized game. It's great therapy. Expand

I can see why people don't like the menu design but it easy to get use too (if your not fussy) same goes for the hold mouse click, gameplay wise its fun and chill the music really immerses you in every world you explore and yes its an exploration game so the whole repetitiveness is a given for me the diverse worlds I met on my journey,so far has kept me playing like so many others.some planets are really hard to survive on and if you get stuck without the right materials to charge up Shields and life support you could face a quick demise. Trading isn't complicated and even fun for some people. Inventory upgrades are easy to come by if you're exploring planets. wildlife are weird and so alien you could spend a while just looking at there behaviours but they are buggy as hell but thats the charm of this game, you can just sit there and laugh at this t-rex looking thing with 5 legs and a horn sliding around or walking like a Monty Python sketch. Its a game you can dip in and out of you don't need to play it for 12 hours each day just take your time and enjoy a few hours chilling. I'm not exactly sure what I was expecting, but what I got was a really fun exploration and survival game that I've played for about 8 hours today. It's as if you told them, "I'm going to sell you this candy bar", and they expect that you throw in the candy factory as well.

People are entitled to their own option. However silly they may seem to me. So I wouldn't rule out any of the negative reviews you will come across. The game is not without its flaws, and I would be lying if I said I didn't have a bias towards the game. Furthermore, this game type is not for everyone, which is what I believe causes such a wide range of the mix reviews that are out there.

Some small annoyances the game have are:

    - the lack of changing your POV

    - the widescreen display shot that happens often which you have to wait for it to go away until you can start doing things again

-the inability to change the controller scheme (seriously who presses R3 instead of L3 in order to sprint!?)

-a few bugs that can take you a little out of the immersion

Nevertheless even with those issues, which I hope they fix, the game is absolutely amazing. The ability to completely loose myself in this game as I run around finding many new points of interest, flying in or out of the atmosphere, finding new star systems to explore, and simply learning the language in order to understand the different NPC's they have in the game. The progression feels real as you unlock more slots to your suit, find new and better ships, and new multi-tools which make it easier to gather resources.

I think if you are on the fence about NMS, and watching a gameplay videos of someone playing doesn't appeal to you, then this is just not your game. It doesn't make it a bad one, simply one tailor for a certain kind of person. Then again that is just one man's opinion.

I was now on a hostile planet with Sentinels attacking me everywhere I went and the air was toxic so I was slowly dying every second. I had to figure out a way to get my ship back.

This meant that I would have to trek across the planet, scouring it for an outpost somewhere where I could summon my ship. Only problem is that on a planet-sized planet devoid of life you never know how long that could take.

I started off towards the very first question mark spot I had in my viewer as my suit's hazard protection rapidly decreased and if that runs out then your health quickly goes down. No problem, I just need to charge it up, except that I don't have any zinc to do so and this planet seems to have a zinc deficiency.

For the next 2 hours I fought sentinels, found caves to stay in and replenish my suit, found many upgrades and new blueprints to make the rest of my journey smoother, and swam in extremely radiated oceans until I found an actual outpost. It was probably my 20th question mark I had come across and it was an amazing feeling to finally summon my ship and be able to say I survived the entire ordeal.

The coolest thing about this is that the game created this experience for me based on my own accident and it was great. It is littered with this kind of stuff. I never know what I might find next and I can't wait to see where updates take it in the next year.

This works so well as a kind of snowglobe-esque homage to space opera universes, with on-point color schema, beautiful sound design, and a killer soundtrack, if the snowglobe was constantly changing around and you could do a *couple* of things to interact with it.

It's also an actual artwork - the creators intend to express a love of discovery and the feeling of loneliness within infinite possibilities, like if you're the new guy in a big city and just don't get what's going on. It also really hits on the idea that beauty can strike you in weird ways when you're also racing to survive.

If you want a great space simulator, don't get this game. If you want a great crafting game, don't get this game. If you want the best procedural generation of all time with wildly varied creatures, still don't get this game, because that's a little limited at the moment. But if you're all about exploring the weirdness of infinity, driven by a simple system to keep things interesting and a broad but well-written text based story, go for it. I did, and I think it's a good time.

This game relies heavily on the expectations you bring into it, a lot like Destiny, and if you weren't sucked totally into the hype train, or a hater from day one, it's a very fun game. You'll hear this a lot, but it is a rather lot like Minecraft. You will spend a lot of time mining, or moving onto another planet. When the vastness of the universe finally sinks in, and that you realise you'll never see that planet again, it is disheartening. But then you land and it's a cooler planet and it starts again. Don't just assume with this game, but take time, and look at how much of a masterpiece it is. It's no Witcher, but it is still a lot better then you think. Expand

Is perfect for me. I have been waiting since they released the first trailer, and I haven't been disappointed with the story, the planets, the sometimes infuriating inventory micro-management. Where the game is currently failing is in Three Main Areas: [1] STABILITY - the game has hard crashed on the PS4 multiple times. In one play session it happened 4 times. I think I blew it up mining a massive resource pile, and exceeded the systems ability to manage the environmental change. Stopped short of strip mining the final time. [2] DATA LOSS - On the 4th day there was a late night crash. So I went to bed, started up the next day and had lost all progress. Normally this would be devastating. I had moved too fast, poorly handled the opening game play and was considering restarting that day, so I took it in stride. Ready to restart. That said, I DO NOT want to do it again. So I need to find a way to make sure I have a backup of my save. [3] TUTORIAL - The tutorial agenda isn't well balanced and handles disruption poorly. Second time around I knew I needed to build Warp Cores, and planned for it, building some items early. After getting the an early recipe for a component. I was forced to rebuild the pieces I already had to get them checked off and progress. Right now I am sitting on one tutorial that requires repair of the Visual Scanner, which I did long ago (right after I got the material, even before repairing my ship).
CONCLUSION: I love open world games so much and Hello Games delivered a game that fits exactly what I was looking to play. I am willing to overlook the initial startup pains of a new game. (I think it's more stable than several of the Bethesda games I enjoyed.) Solve the Stability and Data Loss issues and this is a 10.

This has been quite the adventure and it just started. 35 hours in. If you are interested if you should try this game out... which why else would you be reading this, then here is what I can say about it.

    1) The vastness is incredible! The awesome experience of warping to a new solar system and zipping and burning through re-entry then landing all within a minute is mind bogglingly cool and still after this many hours is probably the best experience.

    2) It's also very lonely and makes you feel insignificant. Couple this feeling with the fact that it compels you to move forward instead of stick around in one place or find every inch of a map, and you get a very unnerving feeling playing this game. This is where you start to see the hate and frustration from a lot of reviewers. "THERES NOTHING TO DO!!" or "ALL I DO IS GRIND CREDITS THIS IS STUPID". You have to have a little self reflection with this game and realize how programmed you are by other games. Want to get the best ship? ok knock your self out. Want to name planets after dirty limericks, go for it. Want to carve your own version of Mt. Rushmore, why not. But you will not get a game that presents a perfect "get to the castle" railroading playthrough. Instead it all comes down to letting go of whatever you think is the point and make your own point and be ok with making a new one:)

For example I was so focused on money for the first 10 hours. I found a planet with rare materials and I started to grind like crazy... until I realized, "What the F*@& and I getting all this money for?" the moment I let go of that self designed goal I realized how fun other things around me were. Like a desolate water planet I started cliff diving from thousands of feet high to snag pearls and explore the bottom of the ocean.

    Why? Because its fun.

    3) I have seen a lot of bugs from other reports but I must be lucky as I have had either none or they were so small that I can't even remember them. The "phasing in" of the landscape is a mild eye sore and is my guess on why the ship cannot be flown too close to the surface of a planet. I am guessing that at higher speed like a starship the details all phase in too slowly.

    4) You get attached to planets and wildlife. This is compounded by the realization that as you start to adventure out into the galaxy, there is no easy way to map your way back. But I take a few screenshots and leave some names of planets and learn to let go. I do hope that an update in the future will make a waypoint system that is more user friendly because like I said, you kind of make your own story in the universe and I would love the challenge of getting back to my first planet later on.

All in all, you have plenty of info out there about the game and the praises and complaints. It's certainly a different experience. I will sum up to say this game creates the same feeling that some of my favorite sci fi books did. It's a slow weird burn of a game.

This is something different, and its not for everyone. For me, its one of the best experiences I had on my ps4. The planets are beautiful, and the felling of loneliness while you are exploring plus the amazing soundtrack, create an amazing mix of sensations.

I *love* how this game is diving opinion- and *that's* partly why I love it. The game is meant to be (mostly) *relaxing* not (over)stimulating; never forget that. Visuals, music, auto-generated whatsits- all marvellous (reminds me of Halo). I even like the inventory and resource management design (reminds me of Metal Arms). Only get this if you understand that exciting games can also be relaxing.

All of these arguments are pointless drivel. My opinion is that this title is one of those that should have been published as a 24h demo, and in order to continue playing you'd have to pay. But, controversy creates cash, and that's good for the small team behind NMS.

There is a lot of room for growth in this title, that is for sure, but I personally am able sink hours in the tinkering and exploration while enjoying myself immensely. I don't like knitting, but I imagine my grandma likes knitting for the same reason I like NMS.

But here's the thing, I bought this game with an expectation that it will be updated, upgraded, and made better. I don't really want more things, but I want more things to do. My grandma didn't knit socks all the time, she also knit some scarves, and whateverthehell else you can knit.

If you read until here, let me give an honest to god helpful hint: Did you spend more time building your base in Fallout 4 than actually playing the core game? If yes, buy NMS. If not, don't.

While my review here is not indicative of a longer term experience (I've played about 6 hours) I think I've probably encountered the bulk of the mechanics that make up the game loop.

Most of these mechanics are relatively par for course "open world" box ticking exercises - find outposts, look for loot, expand your alien vocabulary, craft and upgrade, and that sort of thing. Whilst not particularly revolutionary all of these activities are well presented and engaging enough to keep players going for a long time. An example would be the many locked doors that require crafting/finding key types etc, which offer a tantilising motivation for pressing on. The upgrade system so far is reminiscent of borderlands, and again offers a compelling reason to keep progressing.

There's every likelihood that these mechanics may become boring and/or repetitive after a significant amount of time. Probably a good example is something like Far Cry (3,Blood Dragon and 4) or Skyrim/Fallout, where you're essentially doing the same things over and over - however, personally I still find pleasure in roaming around leveling up and just sort of taking in the atmosphere.

While a lack of clear motivation or strong narrative might put some players off, or maybe leave them feeling slightly overwhelmed or lost, there is a definite sense of place to the universe. And it's this sense of place and mystery that really does appear to be No Man's Sky's ace in the hole.

I'm often completely aghast when I think about the scale of the real universe, almost melancholy, wondering what's up there, and knowing full well that I'll never find out. No Man's Sky evokes those feeling perfectly - whilst leaving you room to make your own stories.

The game can look stunning in places, however, it's procedural nature means in other places it can often look very rough, and while there's plenty wrong with the game, for example, the first person FOV, the fact you're unable to remap buttons (which by default don't feel correct) and so on, it's a superb experience so far and one of the few games that's had me thinking about it after playing.

I find it easy to recommend the game to people, as long as they're aware of what they're getting into and are aware of what makes it special. In the same way Minecraft's lack of structure and urgency might not be for everyone, thos to whom it appeals will no doubt have an excellent time.

No Man's Sky is, at it's core, all about exploration. Find a new planet, discover what you can, what you like, and do with it what you will. The apparent end game goal is to reach the center of the galaxy, but **** that! I'm currently trying to save up enough money to buy a freighter, so I can collect samples from all over, meanwhile I'm meeting alien races, discovering their history, learning the languages, all the while finding upgrades for my gun, suit, and ship. It's a real **** sometimes too, having to balance between the supplies that will keep you alive and in the sky, against those that can build you that sweet new upgrade, or net a tidy profit. This is a game for people who can find the fun in a world that is left open to them.

Regardless, No Man's Sky has a very groundbreaking idea of exploring what may as well be an infinite amount of planets. And thankfully the idea is done very well, but this game won't be for everyone. Someone who doesn't like the basic premise of the game most likely will get bored of this game, but if the idea of adventuring from planet to planet acquiring more resources and better items sounds cool then this game is for you. If you are skeptical I recommend renting it if you can or letting a friend loan it for a bit because watching videos doesn't capture the feeling of the game to me. This is just the perfect game to play for an hour to kill some time. I can't imagine playing this game in long play sessions though. There are some downsides however. The ground combat isn't very good, the game can get tiring after playing for a long time in one day, and it may not be worth 60 US dollars to everyone, but I think the pros outweigh the cons. I had my expectations at a reasonable level and was not disappointed and am having a great time!

None of this is cool, and I fully understand the backlash this game has got. However, playing the game we ended up with, I can't help but love it. Sure, it could've been so much better (it could've been the game he promised), but taken as is, I really enjoy playing it. I know it's a grinder. You fly from one planet to another and all you do is mine, upload pictures (Beyond Good and Evil, anyone?), try to learn words so you can vaguely understand what the identikit aliens say to you before you choose the wrong option, and feed or run away from very odd creatures. It plays like an indie game for your phone, but on a gargantuan scale. But there's something about it. I love flying my little ship, exploring planets. The simplicity of the game soothes me, it's strangely addictive. Murray's lies aside, most of the negative comments state that the game is repetitive, but that's never done the Dark Souls series, Call of Duty series or any FPS any harm has it? Or is repetition only OK if it involves killing things? Personally I have had quite enough of getting sniped as soon as I spawn in multiplayer shooters, and the levels in most shooters look much the same, yet people are moaning about planets looking the same. Some do, but so far I have been pleasantly surprised at the variety.

I honestly think there is a clear divide in age groups here. Old farts like myself who grew up playing Elite on the ZX Spectrum have always dream't of playing a game life this. It genuinely feels like a truly unique experience playing it, and has a slow, chilled pace to it. It encourages you to sit back and enjoy the journey, not race to the end like you would in most other games, and that is quite addictive. Not many games make me think about them and plan what I will do next. This one does. If you like your games frenetic, violent, and in your face, then this is not for you. But if you fancy a game offering something truly different, something you can actually relax whilst playing, try it. The greatest game of this current generation is The Witcher 3, but once the story is done and every place explored, every monster killed, it's done. This game has no story to speak of- just enough to intrigue, but if you don't chase the main Atlas quest, you have a game you can always dip into, and you will NEVER see all it has to offer. I love it!

About a week before launch a saw a walkthrough video from the guy that "leaked" it on Youtube and found myself somewhat interested. So I thought I'd give it a go... and ironically, it got it's claws into me.

It was so completely different from most games I play, I found myself fixed on finding "what was around the next corner" (or next galaxy in this case).

But that intrigue will only last so long before everything starts to feel very much the same. Saying that, it gave me about 40-50 hours before I decided to stop - making sure I was still in a "happy place" with my experience.

And that was the key for me - low expectations, and knowing when I'd had enough.

Another big influence for me was the sound design... amazing! It drew me in and really gave weight and scale to the whole thing.

Don't pay full price, but definitely give it a go and some point.

beautiful art, amazing scenes, screenshot heaven
interesting lore, as you learn about the history of what happened in the past and how the galaxy came to be.

    issues with the game:
UI and some game mechanics needs improving: ( need shortcuts and hotkeys to make life easier)
better waypoint system needed for planets and the interstellar travel ( devs confirmed this is in the works)

for me these are the biggest issues in the game, and hopefully they are fixes easily

We see lots of people saying the planets are repetitive and not variate enough. Well, we knew that when they said it would have infinite planets, a company could either make some planets and work hard to make them very different or make millions that look kind of the same. Either way, I'm impressed with the diversity overall and the outstanding achievement of this indie company. I wish more companies could pitch ideas like this into the comunity and actually have incentive from the people to keep doing so.

Sadly, this kind of public reaction we see towards No Man's Sky will negatively impact the creative game makers and big companies, holding them towards safer and (ironically) repetitive ideas that seem to be widely accepted.

My overall experience with the game has been positive and entertaining. It's a game I can always sit and enjoy while listening to podcasts, music or even the amazing soundtrack it has.

And there is a good story- you just have to eek it out. I learned over 100 words (as you don't understand alien languages of course) before even bothering leaving my first system- which meant hours and hours of slowly learning a species history through visiting various locations etc. And that changed the shape of the game for me, and my goals. it is slow though, and the resource grind is repetitive, but that should be known to everyone already, it's a little like Minecraft. Only different.

    Anyway, I dig it.

In fact the game has almost no story at all. In it's early hours No Man's Sky is game of survival, and near it's bitter end it is nothing more than resource management. Without spoiling anything No Man's Sky's ending leaves a bitter taste in the players mouth making all of their hard work feel meaningless. That being said the journey to get to that ending is where the true game exists. Encountering new alien species, finding resources throughout one of the quintillions of randomly generated planets, and even spaceship combat. Where No Man's Sky succeeds is also where it unfortunately falters. Early exploration feels exciting and new, but upon further inspection becomes repetitious at best. Planets begin to feel like nothing more than re-skinned color pallets of ones that came before, and new animals you discover rarely differ much from ones you've seen already. That being said No Man's Sky is still an enjoyable game, albeit a little buggy at times, and with it's faults I never found myself regretting the purchase. This game may not be the experiences you are looking for if you wish to experience it with friends, or if you want an amazingly told story. It is, however, a game worth investing in if you enjoy a sense of discovery and making your own adventures. Expand

The controls are a bit odd but after just a few minutes of playing you get used to them and find they work very well.

The survival aspect is there for those who want to venture off away from their ship and is avoidable enough to be a background feature for those that don't want it with room for everything in between.

Space combat starts off all fingers and thumbs but, again, once you have played it for an hour or so and have accumulated more than 5 minutes of space combat you get the feel for it and it is a very enjoyable experience.

Graphics wise it is excellent! Bar a view-drawing distance that can't be changed I cannot fault the visuals especially considering the variety. Though it is obvious that it is like lego with set pieces that can be put together by the procedural generation and that more parts are needed to help stave off the feeling of "this looks similar".

The game has its issues, glitches, bugs, crashes and balance issues in some areas. But this was to be expected. Since the days of games spending 5 years in development are gone, with most if not all the of the made up time being spent on QA this is just the way of things now and we have only ourselves (the consumer) to blame. Hello Games has responded by hiring a massive support team and new head of QA with a new ticketing system starting Monday the 15th of August and are already hard at work on patches and workarounds along with FREE DLC.

    In conclusion:
This game is a simple, chill game that I have already sunk 20 hours into and I don't see me slowing down anytime soon. It is an uncomplicated game that allows the escapist in me to zone out from my world and just fly, shoot, mine, explore and even try and discover the story...its there, just hidden a bit too deep for most people to be bothered to find.

The game was over hyped and those who feel disappointed have to realise that the speculation of some fan blogs and even the odd periodical could never have been realised by a developer this small.

Well done Hello Games, now fix those issues, get me my DLC!

Anyone who has played "out there" will recognize the story set up and paths and what not, the inventory layout especially and even ship designs to some degree have made appearances here. Now this isn't necessarily a negative point as out there is a pretty decent game for a text based adventure. Its more like "this is the game that "out there" should have or could have or would have been under different circumstance". It also has a lot of aspects of games like "Galaxy on Fire" for space shipping and trading. The game does get repetitive but don't all games at some point? I can't believe the negative reviews for this game...but I think many gamers (especially young ones) expect every game to be released exactly how they want it. This is wrong, and if you followed the game over the last year or so, you would have not been disappointed.

The game is exactly what it is supposed to be...and many of the complaints are because of the repetitive grind (for resources and storage slots). While I could have done without the grind for resources, this is typical of many games. So what...grind through the first 10-15 hours, then start exploring the rarer planets (green, red, and blue)! I gave it a 9 simply because I think the grind was too long...people just want to get out there and play the game, not sit on the hedonic treadmill of gather/upgrade for the first part of the game.

I do think Sean would have been better off not adding the different color planets and required warp drives because people would not have had to grind, but I'm glad to now be able to go directly to more appealing planets. :)

Space combat isn't bad...once you upgrade your ship!
Sentinels are varied and make gathering much more interesting that most games out there...
Resource gathering is MUCH faster than some games I've played (Minecraft, WoW, SWG, etc.)

I love the fact that once you do the grind to obtain the basics...you're set! Now you can get on to do what the game is truly about: exploration and survival!

Sure, they did try to market the game with combat and trading...and these do exist...just as they do in many other games. Nothing new here, and I think that's one reason people are dissapointed. They wanted some new combat and trading...and while crafting and trading could be improved upon possibly...(some games have added small additions to make it more fun), who would ever really want to play a game to trade? It's trading...quite boring in any game!

Fighting can be fun...but this isn't an FPS game! The combat is basic, but meets the requirements (shoot, sprint, jetpack/jump, kill, and blow stuff up). Were people expecting some new FPS? If they were...why? Did they follow this game at all?

Exploration is fun! If you like to explore, then it will be a fun game once you get past the grind to upgrade. Just when I think I've seen the same old stuff...I find a new planet that looks very different. Still sci-fi with the similar color pallets, but awesome!

I loved exploring minecraft worlds...and I LOVE exploring No Mans Sky!

If you think of the technical achievement with this game...it is outstanding! Minecraft graphics are horrible and it runs like crap using Java, but people love it. No Mans Sky is similar because while it may not be a AAA title with thousands of people working on it, the small team has pushed the limits to produce a beautiful procedural game.

Just think...10 years from now the graphics capabilities will catch up (hard to render all that stuff on the fly...the PS4 and fastest PC can't keep up if you cranked up the graphics!) and we will be playing procedurally generated games like skyrim, COD, Minecraft, etc. but they will look awesome too!

I will play COD again if they create a version with procedural generated maps...every round will be a new, unique game without the campers, nade spammers, etc.

I will say that it is very repetitive and everything looks the same but I don't mind the simpleness of it. I can sit down and play this game for a few hours at a time and enjoy myself regardless of seeing and doing the same stuff over and over. Travel between planets is seamless from surface to surface. The visual style is simple but gorgeous, and the thrill of touching down on a new planet for the first time and exploring the beautiful, immense diversity of it all is truly thrilling to me. I completely avoided the fiasco of No Man's Sky's promotional trail/release by simply not caring about the game. The fantastic review by hbomberguy alerted me to a niche appeal and piqued my interest, and I just bought it for a tenner in the PSN's fantastic Summer Sale. For three days I've binged it nearly non-stop, both alone and with my gf, who is enjoying the experience of exploration and discovery as much as I am.

I’ve found planets with vast lakes and squidgy terrain, ‘paradise planets’ with green skies and green rivers that run through deep canyons, desolate moon-like planets with tall mountains and a palpable sense of loneliness, mushroom planets with toxic atmospheres, and barren planets with little to see or do besides mine the abundant outcrops of valuable minerals. I’ve seen creatures enormous, tiny, cute, and horrifying. I’ve seen haunting monuments to civilizations long-dead half-buried in the middle of nowhere, and bizarre arcing bands of shining minerals streaking out of the ground. I’ve seen soaring peaks and deep ravines and scorched, featureless plains, and strange floating islands peppering twisted purple landscapes. I’ve been hunted through snowy forests by predators that make my skin crawl, and fought off pirates in asteroid belts above the looming spectres of ocean planets. I’m a couple of dozen hours in and while there is a certain definite degree of repetition in aspects of the worlds I’ve been to (because this is an indie game made by a small team of human devs and not the Holy Grail made by Jesus Christ himself), I’ve not lost the sense of wonder when first setting foot on a new planet. I have no doubt that there will be a point where I feel as if I’m just going through the motions, but I haven’t hit that point yet, and for £10 I certainly feel like I’ve got value for my money. I’m also certain that I’ll pick the game up again after I’m done with it for the first time, as there is simply so much to see, not to mention the fact that Hello Games keep adding content for free and thereby increasing the amount available for people to do.

If a game about chilled and contemplative exploration and discovery doesn't sound like your cup of tea, then nothing Hello Games did or didn't do will make you like this game. But if the idea of touching down on an alien moon, the other planets in the system looming in the sky like ghosts, an endless expanse of terrain unexplored stretching in front of you, terrain that no human may ever lay eyes on again, if this sounds exciting, then I highly recommend getting the game. Many of the complaints in the most helpful reviews here have been addressed and fixed. The PS4 version is currently the most stable, and it's only getting better from here.

No man sky is great but not perfect, it's an exploration game where each planet is a discovery.

It's not for everyone, if "Enjoy the journey" describe your type of player, if you explored areas in WoW just because they looked cool you'll love it, if you play game for quests and directed content or for game mechanics you'll hate it. There are nearly no "quest" content and the game mechanics (Crafting, trading) are pretty bad.

Now even for exploration it isn't the "perfect" game. It's missing procedural generation for a few key things that would have made it perfect : station structure is globally always the same, there are only a few station / sentient ET design in the game (3), no generated quests or even randomness in actions possible by NPC (All NPCs in station type "shelter" do nearly the same thing). Also the star structures are pretty boring, often 3/4 planets, not gas giants, no planet very far or very big...
Even the planet grounds are pretty even, no big mountains, no profund caves, it's a globally flat world.
Also a strangely populated one, there are hundreds of 1-person habitats on each planet but no ancient ruins or cities.

But what's currently generated (Planetary color scheme, fauna, plants and a few variations on heightmap) is extremely nice and produce impressive results.

I can only hope for the game to continue like minecraft did, for years, adding small touches everywhere and making everything more diverse and interesting.

This game is not going to be to everyone's liking. This completely new experience in gaming, has opened my eyes to the joys of an exploration game. Five years ago I would not have given this another look but as I slowly grow older and (possibly not) wiser, my tastes have changed and my patience has grown.

As i'm sure you are all aware now, this is not a first person action shooter. Yes there are elements of this within the game, but that is certainly not what this is about. It's about exploring, spending four hours wandering around a planet to find whatever you are looking for and it is amazingly satisfying when that time and effort leads to a Journey Milestone.

I like this game, a lot. It's original, it can be exciting, it can be tedious at times but, come on, we can't have excitement all the time, otherwise you might never appreciate when something truly is.... exciting!

Not a perfect game, but the potential and originality of it all is keeping me gripped.

This is not a game for everyone, but for those it strikes a chord with, it's just great. My advice is to keep moving, be an explorer, never try to settle down, and follow the Atlas story. Those who try to make it their next Elite are going to be sorely disappointed.

And what it is is a space exploration and survival game. It is a sandbox game, so you get out what you want to put in. Do you want cut-scenes and colorful characters and scripted experiences? Go play Mass Effect. This is a game centered around exploration and wonder. Discovering a new world, new creatures, new resources. There is a thrill in all of it. It can get repetitive in terms of mine, build, warp, repeat. But the thing is, every one of those tasks can be as fun or as tedious as you want it to be.

After about 30 hours of gameplay, my current goal is saving up 14 million units to buy a new ship, and also save up enough aluminum to build a hyperdrive upgrade. Then I'll start heading for the core again, or perhaps another Atlas space station. So many choices. I'll decide when I get back to the game.

It'll be interesting to see what building bases and trading ships will add to the gameplay once that update is released.

But considering the modern market the game has to compete against in similar genres, like Minecraft, Subnautica and The Forest. (Which are all quite cheap) Make people completely forget just how big of a deal this game really is. It does still feel like a Beta. But the developers are some of the most enthusiastic people I've ever heard from, and they seem ridiculously into what they've created. They're definitely going to keep releasing patches and updates for this game. Which will completely change pretty much everything in the game. In my opinion, I think it'll end up being one of the most interesting and engaging games ever created. But right now. Wait until it's cheaper. Expand

That's being said: Hello Games will have to step up their game to ensure people will (remain) see that and enjoy the game for a longer period, like Minecraft. Now the game is to buggy and a lot of things you do are repetitive. This will become a breaking point for almost everybody at some stage and they will stop playing the game. Add MP, co-op or a proper storyline and try to generate planets, flora and fauna with more different looks and feels can improve the game experience a lot. I personally would love to explore a system with some friends and build abase of operations somewhere.

I trust Hello Games will achieve this over time and I hope they will add this by free updates. Then it will become a testament of new capabilities in the gaming era and one of the greatest games of all times.

I gave a 10 for 2 reasons: the exploratory component and the infinite potential of the basic formula of this game . Exploration is the best ever seeing in a video game ever: planets are gigantic and even if they just have 1 single biome each these can be complex enough to reveal a lot of different combinations in the elements and create a variety of different environments. If you love pure exploration you will never end in doing it, but at the same time you will always have new places to go: 18.446.744.073.709.551.616 is a very big number of combinations. This enormity combined with the very simple mechanics of the game-play would normally bring me to sign an 8 as score, but I also have to consider the infinite number of improvements that both Hello Games and mod creators will be able to add to this base in the future. This potential is big as the number of planets: here we have an entire universe where every single thing imaginable could be added, more than enough for me to add 2 points to the final score. At the conclusion in my opinion No Man's Sky is an almost infinite sandbox game with a decent but slow and repetitive game-play and an almost infinite potential of growth: at the moment is not for everyone, but if it fits to you is fantastic. This is not a world-building game like Minecraft. It's not a story-driven FPS like Half Life. It's something all its own. Hello Games have created something very special in No Man's Sky, and it is unfair to give it low marks because it doesn't live up to the expectations of everyone out there that was looking for the 'be all and end all' universe sandbox game. The NEXT version of NMS is pretty amazing for someone who has never played it before! The look of the game, the retro 1950's inspired art work, the sound, and the sheer scale make this a special experience. I am a casual gamer, not being interested in the deeper aspects of mining and gathering essential items, but I can see that here there is a lot to do here... If your'e like me go for the creative mode, which is a god mode allowing you to explore freely with no need to harvest raw materials etc.

Why 8? It is confusing at times, being unclear what your actual objectives are, and secondly the frame-rate at certain points drops so low that is for a few moments unplayable...

Definitely worth a shot if on discount.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. No Man's Sky has very much redeemed it's self. with the beta tests of the update NEXT having amazing reviews and critics calling it the spiritual awakening or the Galactic Sized Come Back, the game is here to stay, gone with the bugs and here with the revolution of gaming.

The first update titled "The Foundation Update" brought a new game mode, base-building, the ability to grow plants and products, automation, etc

The second update called, "The Pathfinder update" gave us 4k graphics, 3 new land vehicles, an ARG, increased base building mechanics, more game modes and updated procedural software.

The third update was the 1st reviver getting people to come back, this was "Atlas Rises". With 30 hrs of great story, more procedural software updates, graphical updates, another game mode, (a somewhat bare bones) Multiplayer, more base building mechanics, ability to buy freighters and big ships, the ability to own 6 smaller ships at a time in your freighter, ship combat, and also flight combat and landing controls were also updated.

And finally the Big Daddy of all the updates and game saver of the century, "NEXT", while inconclusive and only going off well-known, hardcore, critic and beta tester accounts, the game seems to be saved completely from the trash can. Next has been confirmed to have, Ringed planets, more story, third-person view, multiplayer models, buy-able corvettes and frigates, COMPLETELY amazing and OVERHAULED graphics, factions, PVP, Playable races, amazing add-ons to base-building, gravitational physics, Overhauled procedural codes, Racetrack building and the ability to share them, updated resources, ability to command a fleet of ships and a restraint on universal currency so it doesn't become inflatable as easily. And i haven't even got into the stuff speculated by the new trailer.

This game is here to stay. Sean Murray never gave us promises and we struggle to grasp that. i myself gave a review of 4 before, ripping the game apart, but now the game we WANTED(and not promised) is finally here. we should all be happy it is and hope for it's continued progress to be as successful as the past updates.

Final Comparison: EVE/Elite Dangerous/Minecraft, i struggled to compare this game to anything but EVE and Elite Dangerous with more exploration and the infinite possibilities of Minecraft.

While I’m sure developer Hello Games is still tweaking things and perhaps even creating more content for No Man’s Sky, the current state of affairs is a strong one. This galactic opus still offers an infinite amount of content for those who want to lose themselves among the stars, but now also contains a concrete throughline that will satisfy a wider array of players. It can be irritating at times, but it’s also full of stunning moments and the satisfaction of building a virtual life among the stars. Four years after launch, it’s finally a journey worth taking.

The world of No Man's Sky is insanely vast and beautiful, but there’s nothing to do in it! There’s no goal, no destination, no ending, nothing!

While No Man's Sky is engrossing for the first few hours, repetition starts to set in and the proceedings grow dull. The developers stated that they plan to add significant features such as base building which could dramatically change the game for the better. There's a promising foundation present, so it's possible to envision a more substantial game down the line. As it currently stands, though, our excitement to cross the universe faded sooner than we expected.
