From the lack of options for character creation, to the slow moving story, this game seems very rushed. I am a very big fan of Mass Effect 1-3, but this barely compares. Not a fan, would not recommend.

While my love for the series as a whole has tempered my opinion to this game, I can honestly say for certain that after about fifteen hours into it I'm still enthralled. As Ryder, I've been taking my time exploring what the new setting has to offer, and have been going through the missions one step at a time. It's really taken hold of me, and I can't wait to see the end. (I've heard it's disappointing, but I'll let my own judgement decide that for me)

That being said, the game has issues. Lots of issues. Glitches, animation bugs, questionable design choices...The set pieces are nice, the RPG aspects of the Mass Effect series seem to be making a return from the original, the character customization might be a bit lacking in the appearance department and the...female models definitely leave a lot to be desired. These slightly mar the experience a bit, but it's definitely not enough to give this game anything below a 5 or a 6-point score.

Rather than giving it a point, though, what I want to do is RECOMMEND THIS GAME FOR PURCHASE. It's not perfect, and the whole experience is kind of hampered by the fact that (1) a lot of folks were expecting so much and (2) it's riding off of the coat-tails (and the controversy that follows it) of Mass Effect 3, but I sincerely hope that they give Ryder their own trilogy to rival the original. There's a lot they can learn from with this game, and I hope they take those experiences to make the next one event better.

Bioware did a total betray, after leading the game industry in progressiveness. The gameplay is alright, but they also seemed to screw over pure biotic/tech players as there are a million different guns and only 3 ability slots. Sure you can switch your loadout, but then they all go on cooldown and it really messes up the flow of action. The cryo perks are mostly about crafting which is mostly about weapons, so once again, it's all about non-tech/biotic builds. Also the plot...The whole "youre the only one who can save the world so special everyone follows you" trope was fun for one, maybe two games, but it's boring now, The story itself doesn't seem very original, making me roll my eyes more times than feel any sense of wonder. Firstly, Id like to get the reason I scored it extremely low out of the way. In terms of the game content and quality I'd rate Andromeda around the 4 maybe even 5 out of 10, you can see glimpses of a good game hidden here. So why the zero score? To be honest its to counteract the biased scores that hardcore fans have been giving this game. I totally understand where their coming from, no one likes people trashing on stuff they like its natural. However I hope as true fans of the series you can see that this franchise deserves so much more and that scoring Andromeda anything beyond a 6 is an exaggeration and only serves to downplay the franchise and present to people that mass effect fans have low standards.

Bluntly put as consumers we deserved so much more then an unfinished and unpolished game riddled with bugs and technical issues (I've crashed quite a number of times) of which unfortunately is the group Andromeda is in. With that out of the way let me address the cons of this game so new comers and old fans that haven't pre-order yet can know what exactly their jumping into.

Right of the bat you're treated to some of the most horrendous character designs and animations that make u paused and wonder if they transferred this particular part of the game creation to some shady third party. The contrast in quality between your characters and the level is striking with emotionless faces being the norm in almost every conversation, not a soothing thought when mass effect highly prides itself in conversations and character buildup. Speaking of character buildup its very weak, at least in comparison to previous mass effects. Everyone seems too willing to be your pawn and despite bioware clear attempt to introduce varied personalities, none of them brought a sense of companionship instead feeling very artificial and forced.

Gameplay wise Andromeda gun fights are fun despite the AI occasional suicidal nature. Its clear from the start though that Bioware focused more on the shooter elements then the RPG side. The game is much more fast pace and hectic then previous iterations and this might put some old time fans off. The removal of locking you to a class is a good improvement and helps more people experience different classes as opposed to starting all over, you can also mix skills between classes.

In conclusion, I really can't recommend this game to anyone. Sure the fights can be fun, the levels can look amazing. However the cons makes this a game worth passing. If you're a sci-fi junkie or/and mass effect fan like me, then I'd suggest you wait till bioware comes and fix the glaring issues plaguing the game. Ultimately this score reflects my opinion that a game should never be released in this state.

I really wanted to like this game, the series only got better after the original Mass Effect, and after a 5 year wait I had high hopes and expectations. I've played about 20 hours in now and unfortunately it seems the wind in the sails of the series died out long ago (I'll update the review if any of that changes, but at this point I don't think I can take more punishment from this game without some major fixes). From funky animations, homely looking uninteresting character, to a questionable story and boring repetitive gameplay. To make matters worse, the different parts of the game don't even mesh real well with one another; it's like a whole bunch of different people worked on different parts of the game and failed to ever communicate with one another. It has left the game at launch to be one big dysfunctional mess.

Starting out it goes wrong real quick. The default characters are certainly nothing to write home about. Male Ryder is salvageable, but Female Ryder looks plain bad. Attempting to fix it in the CC is no easy task either. You cannot modify the default faces and the pre-set CC faces are one step above abominations. One you decide upon a face, again another challenge presents itself in the form of a very (think 2002) simple CC, there aren't many options available and whatever you come up with will always resemble the pre-set face.

The poorly implemented animations hit you almost immediately, and continue throughout. From odd facial expression to no expression at all, lifeless hands, strange walking behavior, and the biggest offender, poor lip-syncing to the dialogue, it plain out doesn't look good. It fails to suspend disbelief and for a game based on so much dialogue is difficult to get past.

Aside from animations, graphically the game holds up no mind-blowing or spectacular, but by no means bad. The landscaping is nice and much of the game looks good enough to immerse yourself in, the problem here is the characters stick out rather badly. They are cartoonish, waxy, and in some cases downright inhumanly ugly. The aliens naturally look better, mostly because there isn't a frame of reference for exactly "how" they should look, the humans are simply ridiculous. Some of them look like they were taken strait out of The Old Republic and just had new textures slapped on them.

Gameplay is okay at points and boring at others. The combat is familiar and largely unchanged from ME3, aside from the addition of the jet pack. The Nomad is okay to drive for about 10 minutes but quickly starts feeling more like a family van on a road trip than an APC. The lack of weapons was a terrible mistake and after awhile just getting in and out to fight things becomes a chore. The original devs dumped it for a reason, it should have stayed in the garage. The mini-games/puzzles are horrendously boring/frustrating and mining for things, we'll I'm just not going to mine (really what was wrong with the orbital probe?) Missions are at best mildly entertaining and at worst mindless tedium, too much fetch filler and pointless dead-ends.

The story, at least to the 20ish hour mark is less than stellar. It takes a long time to get going and once it does, it feels more like the buildup to an aborted launch than an actual liftoff. It doesn't have the urgency or charm of the original series and it doesn't help that it is being played out by largely uninspired characters. The main antagonist seems more like a speed bump instead of that giant imposing stop sign that makes you take pause at what your are up against.

The developers it seems were out to make a game of a grand scope and scale and in doing so failed to see the little things that passed right by the wide angle lens they were using to see the game with. Mass Effect was never about having vast landscapes to explore or tons of mindless things to do. It was about the story and characters, and the interaction of those two that made Mass Effect special. By attempting to make such a grand scale game they lost sight of that and ended up with a grand mess. What would have been wrong with simply making a Mass Effect game? Why try to turn it into something it is not, something that other games do so much better? Hopefully with time they can iron out and fix much of this, it's just unfortunate that they chose to go down a path that attempts to make Mass Effect just another sandbox game instead of narrative masterpiece.

A new step into a new galaxy where you must discover everything on each planet, and this is just a small part of the game. The mood is the same of the first trilogy and some landscapes are astonishing. The plot is quite interesting but, as in the 1st chapter, side quests are the best part, especially playing the quest of your crew.

The one redeeming feature is the world art (not the level design); the art team have done a reasonably good job of making pretty vistas. Everything else, however, is extremely disappointing. It's very sad to see Bioware fall as far as it has. The signs of this company going in the wrong direction have been apparent since Dragon Age: Origins, but as a long time fan this is the nail in the coffin.

Either Bioware needs to seriously reconsider who it's employing and why, or they're heading the way of previous studios who have been consumed by Electronic Arts. Rest in peace, Bioware. Say 'Hi' to Bullfrog, Maxis, Westwood, Dreamworks Interactive, Phenomic, Blackbox and Pandemic for me.

Sadly, ME:A is objectively mediocre at best in those departments. The environmental graphics are stunning, but the characters look cartoony and out of place, especially with the terrible animations. The gameplay is decent, not perfect but not bad either. It feels a lot like ME1's gameplay but faster and more action-packed. Sadly the game has plenty of glitches and bugs, mostly of graphical nature but in general the game feels very rough around the edges. Performance-wise, the game is also rather poorly optimized. You need a beast of a machine to play this game on 'ultra' while honestly it doesn't look better than The Witcher 3 or Dragon Age: Inquisition (which both had much less extreme hardware requirements).

If we look at the open-world exploration aspect of ME:A, there's much left to be desired there too. The world look graphically stunning, but the things to do feel like busywork and things get pretty repetitive and can sometimes feel like a grind. This is especially obvious after having played The Legend of Zelda; Breath of the Wild, a game that really set a new standard for open-world games and really managed to make open-world exploration fun! ME:A just falls kinda short in that aspect compared to Zelda BoTW.

Then there's the writing, which is a bit more of a subjective thing (some people love BioWare's writing, others hate it), but even so, some of the dialogue feels objectively awkward and out of place, with sometimes rather questionable delivery. Several times I felt "wow, a real person would never say that" or "a real person would never say it that way". I have some objections with the main story too, but I won't be going into that here. I will say however that in my opinion ME:A has the worst main story in any Mass Effect game to date. The story feels like a rip-off from DA:I and not as well thought out.

Both the story and characters of ME:A do their jobs, but there is a lack of connection with the characters that was felt in earlier ME games. When tragedy hits, for example, our protagonist and others are able to deal with it without any real sense of emotion or anguish that would've been present in those circumstances.. The story, although engaging, doesn't capture the sense of awe that was present in the first game especially when it came to learning about the world, the clues, and uncovering a conspiracy. In short, the story does it's job, but there just isn't anything that is unique, inspiring, or thought provoking. Lastly, the facial and body animations of the characters are sometimes off to the point it's comical. Not the best for a 2017.. The fun part is that they're still overly aggresive and just keep walking towards you while insta-blasting your shields. As the AI of your allies is about as good as having a twig to back you up, you're mostly fighting alone. This meens you'll be seeing a lot of checkpoints.

Yes, checkpoints.... And they're at some unbelievable poor places. I can't count all the times I had to go over the same four or five minutes or walking/driving to get back to the point I was. When I got there I basically got shot down by an overwhelming amount of enemies yet again. This is just the most lazy kind of combat design I've seen in years. Add to that faults that should have not been close to a released game like enemies moving through objects (still being able to hit you, but not vice verse) and mistakes the average steam greenlight developer would even cringe at.

If you're thinking of buying this game for the gameplay: leave it.
If you're thinking of buying this game for the graphics: hahahahahahahaha, nope.
If you're thinking of buying this game for the story: look elsewhere.

It's a shame that the ME title got put onto this dirthole of a game.

It might be the biggest, most complex and action packed game in the franchise, but Mass Effect: Andromeda is also the least convincing one. The dated facial animations, the inconsistent writing quality and the regularly occurring bugs take you out of the experience too often. On top of that, BioWare has not used the concept of a whole new universe to its full potential, which often makes it feel like Mass Effect: Andromeda has not left our Milky Way at all.

While it’s underwhelming in places, there’s a lot to like as you venture into the weirder parts of Andromeda. Frequent technical issues hamper the experience a bit, as does an uninspiring main story. [June 2017, p66]

A welcome, if slightly patch return for Mass Effect. The script has problems, but combat is bloody brilliant. [May 2017, p.62]
