This game is the biggest disappointment of 2020. Every aspect of the game is mediocre at best. But the worst thing is gameplay - Marvels's Avengers is boring game with lack of any inovation. It's simply not fun.

Just a cheap anthem knockoff, and if your shooting to be a cheap anthem knockoff something is seriously wrong. I can't believe the only villians were taskmaster and Modok and if we are being generous we can count abomination. Modok (this isn't a spoiler they actually show it in the game's commercials) is the only with with an actual boss fight and it glitched out on me constantly, I still have no idea how I got past it. Constant audio issues and graphical glitches as well. This game needed another 2 years of development but instead they decided to release it as a "finished" product. Not to mention the multiple battle passes - oh yea have fun grinding those just take a look at the dailes/weeklies most are over the top obnoxious to finish and you have to do it for each character. It was designed that way on purpose to annoy people into buying microtransactions.

TL;DR - 2 hours of gameplay stretched to 1000s because of repeating the same content over and over, worst level design in existence, horrible monetization schemes and scams. Utterly pathetic this is the best they could do.

In the first 40 minutes prepare to be lectured heavily with SJW cliches, the message delivered awkwardly and without finesse. Rote repetition of chanting mantras that were played out in 2019 take the place where an Avengers story should be. Awful story. Awful, awful story without craft or storytelling expertise. It just keeps getting worse the longer you play. This story is not fire. It's not awesome. It’s not intriguing, it doesn’t draw you in. The terrible cringe of the writing won’t grow on you. IT SUCKS! But in terms of game play, level design, clipping errors, bugs, performance and long term motivation this might be the worst game I played in yeas. The game was published unfinished and feels like it was only made to make some money with the image of the brand.

While you are playing the game you get the feeling it could be on of these smart phone games. Every time the same level, some small (invisible) upgrades for your character, countless copies of enemy types and so on. The only difference is that there are no ads (so far) in Avengers.

This game had the potential to be one of the best games of the year. Don´t get me wrong, I was not hyped but when I heard about it the first time, I thought, this could be exactly, what players want as an Avengers game. But it the end it is just a new chapter of games which are only made to generate money from pointless things likes costumes. I don´t really care if it is not pay-to-win.

The comics, the movies and the brand with all the characters and stories should have been the basis for a growing game that makes you play it for months/years regularely. Nobody expected a GTA 5 or soemething like this. Just a game where somebody can explore the Marvel Universe.

When I played it over the last week (got it early) I tried it out as much as possible because I wanted to find the part which creates real value. And for some hours the tactical fighting can be fun.

So when you get it cheap in a few months and you have time feel free. But for everyone who wanted to see something special, please just be aware that this is made to sell stuff, not to take players on a journey.

It is basically a summary of what is going wrong with game development and the whole industry right now. Focus on costumes and this one tiny equipment that gives you one point more strength and make money with it as much as possible. In these games you are no gamer anymore, you are a consumer/customer. The more I think about it the more you can compare the game with cash cows like NBA 2k or FIFA..

This was such a bad game! How can you screw up The Avengers with an amazing voice cast? Here's how-

The story is mostly focused on Kamala Kahn, who is apparently the most irritating Avenger. Her fan-girl stuff gets old real fast. She learns to believe in herself through the power of friendship and all that BS. It's okay though, because the writers throw in some Hulk and Iron Man levels. And they even eventually remember the other Avengers by the third act, also.

Every Avenger feels exactly the same to play. It reminded me of a fighting game where there are about three moves that are unique to each character and the rest is just light and heavy attacks. Granted, it's cool to fly around as Iron Man-but they throw so many enemies at you that even that gets tiring.

And the enemies are so irritating! First off-they are incredibly repetitive. You'll fight waves and waves of these robots while trying to defend a certain point or destroy a larger robot. And you'll do this in about three different rooms repeated with minor variations. Every time I heard the world "AIM base" I sighed with frustration.

It also felt like I was doing a miniscule amount of damage, for some reason. Even as I leveled up and equipped better gear, even considering that the Avengers are basically god-like, I was still just slowly chipping away at the smallest enemies. It makes no sense that the Hulk's giant fists would need so many hits to actually smash anything.

The DLC doesn't improve it much, either. the Hawkeye DLCs are just more AIM bots, but with a bow this time (which still barely scratches anything). And the Black Panther DLC just adds a crazy amount of difficulty, with multiple defense missions that are incredibly tedious and a new effect that blurs your screen so you can't see anything.

I only really gave this a shot because I really liked the Guardians of the Galaxy game, but this one is nowhere near that standard.

If I were to write a short summary, it would be: "Anthem, but with a better single player story."

If I were to write a short summary, it would be: "Anthem, but with a better single player story."

The single player story is decent enough. Typical superhero fare, better than amateur fanfiction, passable as a story in its own right. Had the rest of the game been this way, it probably would have been much better. Instead, this game is like Jekyll and Hyde (or Banner and Hulk): Two disparate experiences that only have strands of similarities.

Once you get through the relatively short campaign, you hit the live service grind and, well, that's where all the Anthem comparisons begin. Sluggish, buggy combat. Boring, generic locales. Uninspired gameplay loop and reward designs. Braindead, predictable AI, both enemy and ally. Buggy textures and models. Broken matchmaking and multiplayer. Framerate drops. Shoddy camera. SYSTEM CRASHES.

The game tries too hard to be a live service game, throwing everything and the kitchen sink at you -- but they forgot to include rewarding gameplay. All of these games are repetitive by their very nature but the best live service and looter style games find ways to make these loops enjoyable and something you WANT to come back to. With Avengers (much like Anthem), the combat and loot loops are so mundane, so boring, and so buggy that you'll become numb to them within a matter of hours. Not days or weeks or months -- hours. And that's where the real disappointment begins to set in.

I can't help but wonder how much better this could have been if Crystal Dynamics had been allowed to make this game in the same style as their Tomb Raider series instead of having to push the "live service" model. Just as I often wonder what could have been with Anthem had BioWare been able to just make it a standard BioWare RPG rather than EA's attempt at a Destiny clone. And that's the final, possibly most damning, comparison: Avengers is CD's 'Anthem' in that their publisher wanted a game to try and suck up those live service dollars going to Destiny and Division and others, so the publisher pushed their dev studio into a game genre they have little to no experience in. The end result shows. This is no longer 2014 and 2015 when we were at the start of a new console generation, looter shooters were still new (-ish, Borderlands notwithstanding) and people were willing to give games like Destiny and Division time to right their wrongs and mature. No one waited for Anthem to mature, and no one is going to wait for Avengers to mature -- especially not with the new generation of consoles right around the corner and new experiences to be had.

I give the game a 4 solely for the story mode. It's not worth anything higher than that. If you want to play the story, give it a month and it'll be on sale. Give it two to three months and, like Anthem, it'll be bargain bin.

As a lifelong Marvel fan, I desperately wanted to love this game. I found the early previews alarming but still purchased it on the strength of a review by a streamer I trust. Having finished the single-player campaign, I can say with confidence that this game is a mess.

The good: the characters play and feel like they ought to. There is no PVP mode forcing character balance, and that's a good thing. It also avoids the pitfall of using heroes' powers as add-ons, instead of making them the base gameplay. Sadly, that's the end of the good points.

The bad: the story is based on the flimsiest of premises. It also relies heavily on Ms. Marvel, a character I didn't care for before, but after playing this game, have grown to really despise. Her power set is derivative and her backstory appears to be some Marvel writer/editor's self-insert dream. The supervillains, regular enemies, and stage backdrops are extremely limited, 3-5 of each. The loot system is not compelling in any way. It uses the standard white-green-blue-purple-orange color system to denote rarity, but none of that seems to make much difference. There are no cool cantrips or bonuses, and no buffs on the loot seem to do anything. The multiplayer matchmaking is awful, and for a game that is built around playing with other people to accomplish objectives, that alone is killer. The load times are also some of the worst in recent memory, rivaling Horizon: Zero Dawn for most time spent not playing.

The ugly: So, so many bugs. Others have said this game should have stayed in development for another 1-2 months. That's being nice. They should have taken at least six months to polish this up. So many graphical bugs, disappearing loot, rolled back microtransactions, game-breaking gameplay bugs...you name it, Avengers has a bug for it. For a game to have had such a big beta test, it is astounding that it was allowed to release. It's bad enough that going forward, I would never pre-order a SquareEnix/Crystal Dynamics game. Yes, it's bad enough to be that drastic.

Further ugliness: microtransactions. I might get some hate for this, but I'm ok with microtransactions as long as they are done right. I have 1200+ hours sunk in Marvel Heroes and spent heavily on that game. Even more so for games like Marvel Future Fight. But even I couldn't justify spending real money on what Avengers has on offer. $14 for a single skin, and of course you can't just buy $14 in currency, you have to buy $20. The skins are unimpressive for the most part. There's also a lot of 'garbage' items for sale like emotes (have yet to see one used) and nameplates for your online profile. There are skins and the like available for 'free', as long as you grind through a character's "character card". Unfortunately, many bugs revolve around undoing card progress, so good luck with that.

Overall, the game has some appeal for big Marvel fans like myself, but the many limitations, missteps, and severe lack of polish cast an inescapable pall over the proceedings. There are is a lot of potential here, and future updates could pave the way to a really enjoyable Marvel experience. I just can't recommend it in its current state. As this game is supposed to be a 'games as a service' platform, maybe they should have just released it for free. Regardless, wait for a severe price drop if you are curious, or at least wait until you see that patches have addressed the bulk of the dozens upon dozens of bugs.

Campaign was ok, just ok... it wasn't mind blowing, but it was serviceable to the Avengers, I did enjoy all the banter that Kamala had with everybody. Her voice actor is PERFECT for her character, unfortunately it seems there is no way to replay the story.

The post-game grind is not bad. BUT and a huge BUT, is that matchmaking for whatever activity you want to play is either broken or just doesn't work. I have yet to be able to get into a squad of 4, and at most was able to get a squad of 3 together once.

The social hubs were pretty hidden, and not easy to find at first, they should be available to the campaign playlist too.

Lastly, there are quite a bit of bugs, considering most of the pre-alpha was done from home, this does not take away from the score, but other decisions are baffling and not okay.

Buying this now is effectively entering into a early access build.

I have found the game to be very fun the campaign is a bit short but the main meat and gravy is the coop anyway. I would recommend this game to anyone who has at least 1 friend to play with otherwise it may become boring quickly. I have amended this review I initially gave a 9 as I thoroughly enjoyed the game and my comments above are accurate. Since then support has been completely stopped and they made the game more grindy, by increasing required xp to level up. This has since been reverted, but is unacceptable in the first place. Expand

The game's uninspired and boringly repetitive combat system combined with a pointless loot system, manage to make even a cast as diverse as the Avengers feel samey. Unfortunately the story isn't much better. The developer's focus has clearly been less on making an interesting game and a lot more on creating a ridiculously greedy monetization system and a tasteless advertising platform.

One of my biggest gripes with super hero games...what is the fascination with developers always designing these games where the characters start out either without their powers or underpowered?! If it’s an origins game, that would be different. But this story takes place where their powers should be intact right from the start. They’re the Avengers for Christ sake! Meaning they’re already established!

Aside from that, I am in total agreement with the bad reviews so I won’t rehash what’s already been pointed out. Only reason I tried this out was it was a free gift from one of the game’s sponsors.

-The game should be called Kamal Khan, since she is the only thing the game focuses on and NOT the Avengers.
-The game play feels clunky and button-mashy' from the start all the way to the finish and never has that fluid, smooth, organic feel to it.
-Instead of using movie rights or anything Marvel has ties to they used different actors and faces to mash-up the best similarity they could come up with for the characters and it didn't work well. Like, at all.
-The story all the way through the game including the side quests feels like a rollercoaster that eventually falls flat.
-The visuals can be great at times but dont really hold the game up with its lackluster elements.
-The music flows really well however, the soundtrack I found very fitting.
-The additional content felt forced filled with ads and not very exciting to work towards.
-The combat system felt highly flawed, enemies felt overpowered at times and the heroes felt quite literally the opposite.
-The gear not changing appearances was also highly frustrating.
-The fact alone I had to force myself through the 12+ hours of this game was agonizing,

It's a looter shooter of the most basic kind. You have six slots for gear that upgrade 4 stats. Gears do not affect character models, as they want to sell cosmetics, and they don't have any variety or lore attached, so there is no option for individualism, you are just looking at bigger numbers. The few stats mean that you have no opportunity for builds, no varied strategies, and linear level design mean you are just brute forcing your way through the entire game. The gear system is just to create busy work in levels, to find chests. If they removed it entirely and you just got stronger as you levelled it would be just as effective but remove tedious menuing. They constantly bug you to upgrade and drops are very common, meaning an alarmingly large amount of the game is spent in menus.

The robots you fight are at exactly the wrong level. Too tough to get any cathartic sense of fighting through waves of fodder (you know, how it should feel to play the Hulk), too weak and lacking enough variety to be tactically interesting. You fight the same robots in the same environments, mission after mission, any pleasure quickly fades. The one highlight is fighting bosses, but these are few and far between.

There is a half decent sorry here, Kamala khan is a likeable enough audience POV character, and you can get engaged in the story, simple though it is. But it is not enough to make up for the pain of playing it.

Everything that is wrong with this game is a failure of game design. They allowed commercial pressures to come before a fun experience and it shows that no one cares about the end product. This is not a good idea executed badly; I can forgive that, often there is still something to be proud of. This was a set of unoriginal ideas executed to the bare minimum to meet a need for a revenue generator. I doubt anyone involved in this is proud of it.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Graphic Performance - for release, not bad. Was able to complete the entire Campaign with little to no graphics issues, the odd black screen here and there, as long as I wasn't connected to another live player. As soon as a second, third, or fourth player joined Graphics would begin to lag as well as overall server connectivity. LG NanoCell 4K UHD HDR 49" Smart TV, with Xbox One X, and a proper high speed HDMI cable meant for high performance 4k.

Content - Severely lacking. Campaign leaves a bunch of unfinished quest lines, unacknowledged dialog(at the end of one of Widow's "SIDE" quests, Pym tells her to talk to someone in the Science bay, but there is no one in the Science bay she can talk to, nor can you even at that point of the game, go to the Science bay as widow). The Campaign is labeled as a Single Player mode and yet every quest, mission, and dropzone is a multiplayer online mission. Finishing the Campaign isn't finishing the Campaign, cause Avenger's Initative, which is supposed to be their Multiplayer, is actually Campaign Part 2. And there is a lack in end-game content. You get 2 weekly and 2 daily missions per Hero that takes like 2 hours to complete. With 6 individual "Character Passes" that shows a "Free" line, which means they are more than likely going to be adding individual paid lines to each pass in the future.

Multiplayer Connectivity - Can sit for 2 hours or 2 minutes hoping that someone is going to be able to connect to you is also about to start the same mission as you. When people do connect to your lobby, there are no obvious hosts, so randoms can come in, start your lobby and leave; making it so you now either have to close your game or go through the 5 minutes of loading just to quit the mission and start the process all over again, and thats assuming that mission you wanted to do in the first place is still there, because War Table resets and Vendor Item Resets don't follow their server time resets in any pattern.

Bugs - tons of exploitable bugs easily found without people noticing, I.E. Thors Particle Vaporization. Combining Thor's Innate Shock and pushback Crits, with Pym Particle Shrink Crit and increased Damage can quite literally cause enemies to shrink, while thor is using his brute strength to push enemies into walls, through the map and get vaporized in the nothingness, and thats assuming there isn't anything under you otherwise they'll get stuck under the map unable to die, making you have to reset the mission. Very common to also achieve while using ODINFORCE and PINNING ENEMIES TAKE PYM DAMAGE when you throw your hammer, enemies will go flying through the air, shrink, and fall right through the map as the hammer will land on the ground pushing them right through.

Day 4 of owning Starts at 12:02am 15/09/2020, Thor level 50 PL 135 and Rising, Everyone else is at least 25 and at least PL of 50. Except Cap, cause he's a useless enhanced human.

Hi, my experience with avengers is poor.
Lots of bugy mechanics, not much to do after campaign. Its worst then Marvel Future Fight and that is a free mobile game.
Don’t understand why they went in this direction with Marvel title.
I was hoping it is going to be a lots of fun, though that turned out to be a lot of... frustration! Hope they will change some of the mechanics and abilities- boring!

I had much higher expectations, there was so much potential, but it ended up being glitchy and, I could tell there wasn’t a lot of love and care put into it. Amazing 10 hours story and that's about it... Lvl up Thor to lvl 46, got tired of the repetitive gameplay/ennemies/environnement... So a big 2 for the story only, everything else worth skipping. Good games to buy at 15$. Won't play again till Spiderman and Hawkeye are released. Ain't worth my times or grind...

I bought the early access game. I played the campaign and it glitched with me at interrogation Anixity (talk to tony at the war table). You need to finish the campaign so you get new challenges at the online part and get better gears (exotic). I’ve been patient and im on my limit now. This game isn’t ready. I want a refund for my early access. Expand

This game was such a waste of money. It’s also another showing of companies taking the audience for granted and misleading the consumer. Dropping Spider-Man news that late? Releasing it in that state? This seems like another long con for microtransactions

I can't believe I wasted my money on this. Also can't believe how they could make such a horrendous product out of such a huge budget.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The game is full of action, but what's the point of having a quick match when it takes hours to find 1 match. It's hard to join a random match but it still say quick match, u can't start one but it says quick match. The online part is horrible and it's too complicated to play online with urs and even randome people. The online part and frs really need help. I feel like they rushed the game to come out but didn't put any effort in the online or frs part. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Really buggy. Skins are just recolours of the same skins. Cosmetics and emotes are unimaginative and uncreative. Missions are the same repetitive "beat'em up" types. The grind is just not worth it.

Personal take: I did the Last Avenger Standing mission from the Reigning Supreme chain, was already on the 11th floor and the objective was "Defeat all enemies", which I did, but there were only four human grunts. I defeated them but nothing happened. Reloaded checkpoint nearly 10 times, still nothing.

Insanely repetitive and horrendously buggy. This game had so much potential and has been an incredible letdown. Waste of money.

It could’ve been a great single player title. The publisher chose to go down the game as a service path though, and those who prefer to play solo need to tackle run-of-the-mill co-op missions. The multiplayer on the other hand is messy, chaotic and in the long run boring. When the developers manage to fix the most pressing bugs and find a way to bring more variety to co-op, this might become a solid game. Right now, I can only recommend it to the biggest fans of the Avengers. [11/2020, p.26]

This is the perfect example of "Games as a Service" done right. Marvel's Avengers offers up a superb campaign story to play through that is promised to be expanded on in the future. The gameplay may be repetitive, but it includes just enough to keep players interested and invested in the endgame content that is available now to keep this game going until the next step in its roadmap. The possibilities and potential in the future here are hugely exciting.

There have been plenty of moments during my time with Marvel's Avengers where I’ve genuinely had a great time. But this game keeps finding ways to drag itself down- at times it almost feels like it goes out of its way to do so. There’s just so much here that I can’t overlook, no matter how hard I may try. An unnecessary and broken loot system, a litany of horrible technical issues, uninspired and one-note mission design, and a story that fails just as much as it succeeds- it doesn’t matter how mindlessly fun the combat is, it isn't enough to overcome such a heavy list of problems.
