The problem is that this game was made to be TOO accessible for newcomers. The Auto Combo system has absolutely ruined this game. Plus the easy Hyper Combos are just way too EASY to pull off. There are so many times when I accidentally wasted a Hyper Combo while caught in the midst of battle, only to have my opponent telegraph and block the entire move. You would also think Capcom might realize that it just isn't fun to be corner-raped for an entire match. Once people know how to string together the most basic combos there's just no way to block or avoid it most of the time and newbies can simply Auto Combo their way to victory. Not very much fun and there's little to no skill involved. The Infinity Stones are a nice touch but it gets annoying when people kill off your 1st character then use their Soul Stone before you can use yours to take an easy win. Again, not fun at all, just an aggravating design choice.

Removing the X-Men and Fantastic Four didn't help this game's chances but we can blame Marvel for this since those properties were sold to Fox. Some of the character choices on Capcom's side were very questionable as well. Haggar? Nemesis? Firebrand? A lot of recognizable characters are on the roster but these obscure choices weren't even necessary. Overall the game feels like a giant advertisement for all of the upcoming Marvel movies. The 2 vs 2 combat is fine because it makes matches much quicker but the Auto Combos and easy Hypers should've been completely scrapped.

It's unforgivable that in 2017 a new Marvel vs Capcom game would look so bad......characters' models look plastic and stiff, horrid story line and lack of key characters that have always been part of the franchise.........a total disaster.

Everything else pretty much isnt. Most characters are just reused from MvC3. The Story mode is downright stupid and the dialouges are cheesy. A lackluster roster and a Season Pass ( datamining shows that another one is more than likely to come ) that puts new characters behind a paywall that costs no less than 50% of the core game. Capcom at its best.

If you wait two months you can get a copy used for much cheaper, trust me.

With Injustice 2, MKX, Tekken 7, Blaz Blue and Guilty Gear all available on current gen, you will be much better served with each one of these. Sadly, just like with SF Capcom shat the bed again.

As someone who has been very skeptical and unhappy with MVCI since its reveal, I decided to try it out before I made my final judgement and it did not disappoint in that it indeed disappointed. Let's start.
1)Graphics/Presentation and Artstyle - I'll start by saying the graphics have improved much since it's controversial day 1 reveal but now having played the final version on 4k, it's hard to believe this is a modern day 8th gen console game. It only looks like a slightly tweaked up version of a game(MVC3) that came out almost 7 years ago on a 7th gen console yet MVC3 graphics, artstyle and presentation is lightyears ahead of this game and shows nothing but the upmost love into all it's nuances but MVCI looks so passionless. From dead eyes on characters, weird facial expressions, frozen lip movement, odd body proportions, questionable texturing and bad design choices. The characters also blend too much into the background. Honestly I hate to say it but it's a bit painful to the eyes after long periods of staring at it, something I don't get from watching a budget title like KOF14. The HUD/UI is honestly the worst i've personally seen in a game in a decade, it's bland, lifeless and feels amateur.
2)Sound/Music - This had me scratching my head. The music in this game is some of the worst fighting game music i've been bestowed upon, nothing but "wub" "wub" and generic themes. The voice acting with a few exceptions is downright atrocious and will have you questioning how this came about especially with resources like Marvel who have an entire animated division full of voice actors who already voice these characters and Capcom itself with it's own titles. The voice acting is comparable to the quality that was put into the original RE back on PS1 which was so bad Capcom made sure to correct on it's own remake of RE.
3)Controls - This is one of the rare instances it shines. The controls imo is the best the series has felt since XMvSF or even going back as far as COTA. Easy to jump into and get use to. And it still has all the executional depth previous installments had like plinking or tri-dashing.
4)Story and Concept - This is one of the most disappointing areas of the game especially when you compare it to the standards of other fighters that has been established since 2013 or so. I didn't expect the depth of NRS or anime fighters given the subject matter. But whoa the voice acting is so bad it's distracting how forced it feels, the dialogue in-game and via story feels like terrible fan-fiction gone rogue, the character interactions are cringe-worthy and soundbites are uninspired. The story is what you'd expect if you played SF5s storymode and MVCI story is more bearable when it drops all the slapstick/jokes for a more serious tone.
5)Gameplay - Now this where the game shines the brightest. Imo I think this might be the best gameplay mechanics the series has seen. It has all the depth/strategy of the tag system from SFXT except you don't need meter to tag. It's extremely free form and you can tag in/out at any moment(offensive, defensive, specials, supers etc) which leads to some ridiculous scenarios. The game technically has no assists but I beg to differ, it does. Instead however your assist doesn't come from a secondary/3rd character from the sidelines, your assist comes from your primary on-point character, the difference besides the aforementioned is that when you use your assist(active switch) you change characters to the oncoming one. So all the crazy lock-down and high-low mixups remains intact. Example using a multi-hitting move like Firebrands flame carpet or Chuns lightning legs to lock-down the opponent and than mixing them up with tri-jumps to get in a high or low just like using assists in MVC3. All the other modes are of a dated standard(mission, arcade etc), training mode/tutorials is a big disappoint, it has bare minimum effort, just play Guilty Gears Xrds(a 2014 game) training/tutorials and come back to MVCI and see what I mean, it's boggling that this passes as a training mode/tutorial in 2017 when you compare to alot of the competition which has things like frame data, hitbox/hurtbox display and explanations of fighting game lingo like negative edge, teching and meaties. Besides all that the UI and other areas are frustrating coming from a game made in 2017. There is no Legacy Stick Driver Support. Only one person gets the post-match menu. Only one person gets main menu control with no indication of who...Now the online, playing online is alot better than past Capcom fighter efforts. If you have a solid connection vs another solid connection you'll be very pleased, not the best online but the best Capcom has achieved so far. The roster leaves little to be desired, small and uninspired, no 50 characters like KOF14 or hype factor like the selection of KI.

Overall i can't recommend MVCI to casuals and hardcore alike. Buying MVCI is endorsing a bleak future for Capcom Fighters.

The main reason this was made into a 2 vs 2 is because they had to cut down the roster. No X-Men. No Dr. Doom. Just an MCU roster with a significant chunk locked behind DLC. I became suspicious, the moment they announced it though and should've stuck with my gut. During the time of the announcement, it was reported that because Disney cancelled their Infinity series, they wanted to revive another installment of the Marvel vs. Capcom series - so this was done to have another outlet to promote their properties (Marvel characters). So I knew they'd have a big hand in this, and it shows. From the overproduced shiny look to the clear preference for MCU characters (Black Widow DLC?! No mutants-which I assumed at the announcement last year). And they definitely played it safe on the Capcom side (there are a lot of great Capcom characters that I'm sure Disney/Marvel wouldn't want associated with their properties). This definitely didn't have the FGC in mind. These elements are what drag the score down for me.
The two positives I'll say for this are 1.) The Infinity Stone system (though its shameless promotion for Avengers: Infinity War) and 2.) the net code seems great so far - finding a matchup within seconds online.
I'll likely play this for a few weeks, but will likely keep on focusing on playing Injustice 2, Tekken 7, Street Fighter V, KOF, and Guilty Gear. There are plenty of solid fighting games out already.

Heavy characters are trash, go with speed or "Keep Away" characters like Dante, Jedah, Zero, Spider-Man, etc. If you are concerned with X-Men characters they're in the game, only disguised as MCU characters. (Example: Gamora is Deadpool/Wolverine). If you have a chance to change the Capcom Asian characters (like Ryu) to native language I recommend it. The English voices are bad dubs. If you go against players online that has "Easy Combo" activated, expect "one button" supers. Not a good time. Presentation is great when the action is going, but idle characters and hair animations are bad. The DLC packs are not worth the wait also, besides the brokenness of the new characters will introduce to the already weak roster (like Killer Instinct did on season 2 on Xbox one). If you played older MVC titles its very lack luster. (Example: Venom is not a new character to the series if he came out on MVC2). Last but not least, if you still want this game do combo research on YOUTUBE before going online. Youtubers like Maximilian Dood (who are paid to promote the game for EVO) has broken down the game and exploited the combos and flaws (destroying any learning curves). No joke, Zero/Strider has an infinite combo without using stones. Oh, almost forgot about the infinity stones, its Capcom's lazy attempt to have an assist characters in the game without having another character on the screen. That's what I call lazy programming from Capcom. Like i said before, rent the game on GameFly or Redbox first to determine if you like it. But for 60 dollars, i will be waiting for DBZ fighters. Or buy MVC3, Injustice 2, or the new Tekken instead. (Fun fact: I bought the PS4 for MVCI. Well, that sucked). If you stayed for the end of the review, I commend you and hopefully this review helped. Anyway, let us talk about this game for up to 5000 characters.

I think the gameplay of MVCI is solid at the least. I'm gonna reserve judgement for awhile since well, we all thought SFV had solid fundamentals as well. If 6 months down the line reality stone spam is the dominant strategy, I'll probably change my tune.

Now lets get to the bad, shall we?

To say the visuals of MVCI are underwhelming is an understatement. Models have no real quality to them, aside newcomers who actually had to be designed for this game versus being ripped straight from MVC3. There's also a very distinct lack of art direction in this game. MVC3 didn't have flawless models but it's visual styling made up for it in spades. Everything popped in MVC3. In Infinite, everything just looks so bland. UI, models, hit effects etc. All don't stick out at all.

Roster is terrible, of course. 30 people. Roughly 6 new characters (5 if you wanna say Thanos isn't new, since he was in 2) and 24 returning from 3. Coincidentally, all 6 of the coming DLC characters are new entirely (Aside Venom)

I'll also go on record in saying that seeing the Monster Hunter Trailer a mere few days after release is incredibly suspicious. Cut from game for DLC much? All of your S1 characters probably are.

Of those 24, characters like Spencer, Arthur, Firebrand and Nemesis are taking slots in spite of their lack of popularity. I suppose that's subjective but there were far better choices to be made. Amaterasu, Wesker, Akuma, Phoenix Wright etc. My guess would be that nobody would buy a Arthur/Firebrand DLC pack vs a Akuma/Wesker one.

And ya know, the whole glaring issue of No X-Men and Fantastic Four characters. Hard to fathom this series without the people who started it all with X-Men: Children of the Atom. Don't worry though, you don't actually remember the X-Men and Nova is a Magneto Function.

Also, only 4 women. Kinda strange but I suppose when you cut X-Men, the only women you can come up with on Marvels side are Captain Marvel (A character nobody really cares about but is getting a Roman Reigns push from Marvel) and Gamora, the least interesting Guardian of the Galaxy. Chun and Morrigan are fine, obviously but what about Juri? Lady? You have a ton of options but you go with only the safe picks? Do something bold, Capcom. Linn Kurosawa, Regina, something new. Though knowing you, you'd probably waste a slot on Laura Matsuda instead.

Audio in this game is terrible as well. VA is incredibly sub-par for the most part, with a few people nailing it (TJ Rotolo as Frank, Dan Woren as Arthur) while others absolutely flounder (Morrigan, Firebrand) This is not the VAs fault, as far as I can tell. Reuben Langdon (Dante) has spoken about how rushed the VA jobs were. I doubt they even had voice direction in this game to be honest.

Also, everybody shouts their movies now. This was present in MVC3 (That game had good voice direction however) but it's way more prevalent and annoying now. Yes, Chris. I know what a Shotgun is. You don't need to shout it every time you shoot it. This is every character from Haggar (LARIAT) to Strider (OUROBOROS)

The music is an absolute disgrace as well. All those great character themes for Marvel characters? Gone. Now it's just generic orchestral crap you'd hear in a MCU film. Capcoms aren't particularly great either. It's so sad, since the music was always the best part of MVC games.

Make no mistake about MVCI. It's a budget game masquerading as a AAA video game. Capcom refuses to front money into their fighting games anymore and it shows with the massive drop in quality with this game. Outside of gameplay (Which is subjective. I still prefer MVC3s personally) I can't think of a single thing MVCI does better than its predecessors.

I think Max put it best when he said MVC is supposed to be a celebration of both franchises but MVCI is just a business transaction. MVCI is a game with no heart. No soul. Just a lifeless husk of a video game put out to make Eat Sports money.

Unfortunately for you, Capcom, people have caught on to your **** and aren't buying into this. I'm sad to see Marvel vs Capcom of all franchises reduced to this but maybe you'll finally learn your lesson here. You can't half ass anything anymore. Not when everybody is stepping it up (DBZF Makes your game look pathetic by comparison.)

If you're still interested somehow, wait for a massive price drop. They'll be coming soon since MVCI is bombing. Til then, I'll be here mourning the death of Mahvel. Not with a bang but a whimper

Gosh, even Sigma (one of the main vilans) and Black Panter that are in the game will come as paid DLC! I can't, I just can't.... sorry. I'm giving 2 because is the worst game of the franchise. EDIT: I just remembered, there are ONLY 10 stages. It's a 0 (zero). Expand

What can be added about this game besides what everyone has said?

It is no doubt the most fun Marvel vs. Capcom game when it comes down to mastering the combos and creating your own identity from the teams and choice of infinity stone. That being said,

First off, this gameplay is spectacular. The game allows for large combo customization with the multiple ways to tag in your partner. It is no doubt the most fun Marvel vs. Capcom game when it comes down to mastering the combos and creating your own identity from the teams and choice of infinity stone.

That being said, the visuals are atrocious. The topic has been beaten to death already, but for good reason. It hurts to look at a game fall so far in terms of graphic details that it spawned memes of faces (Chun-li, Dante, and even Ironman) that still plagues the game even after release. I won't harp on this for long, but only due to the huge outcry from other people about its presentation.

Adding onto presentation, however, is the poor roster. Another detail I won't spend a lot of time on because of the huge amounts of criticism it has already received, but it still needs attention. Out of the entire roster, only 4 (Thanos, Gamora, Jedah, and X) of the 30 were not in the series's previous iteration (Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3) and raises many concerns of Capcom's decision making. And, as of the date this review goes up (September 22, 2017), the first DLC character (Monster Hunter) already has a trailer showing that she's fully complete. This only adds to the confusion on why she is not in the base game considering she is in the game's story mode. This raises further issues when the new characters are locked behind a paywall and forces players to cough up more money on top of a fully priced game for new characters. If she is already completed, why not include her in the game? The game just came out and Capcom shows this. It's disrespectful and shady for people who have already bought the game. Side note: Half of the main villain of the game "Ultron-Sigma" is also locked behind the paywall (Sigma).

And, to add onto the bad news, there's also the problem with the simplicity of the game. I'm not saying it's a bad thing (in fact, it's awesome as it helps new players get adjusted to the game and its pace without having to learn complicated combos and setups to discourage themselves), but when a person can easily mash the same button over and over again in a laggy/stuttering situation during online play, it kills any momentum of fun and leaves a bad taste in one's mouth. They should have left the simplicity as an option as other Marvel vs. Capcom games have done.

In conclusion, Marvel vs. Capcom: Infinite is like the worst cake one can ever eat--sure the inside is made of enriching flavors that brightens up your day, but you have to dig through maggots, expired mustard, and forgotten cigarettes just to reach that small center of sweetness. If you love Marvel vs. Capcom for its gameplay depth and complexity, then you'll have a blast with this game. If you love the series for its boldness in style and characters, then I recommend waiting for at least a price drop because this game will disappoint you. If you are a new player to the series or fighting games in general, I simply cannot recommend this game as much as it pains me to. Unless you are willing to put days, weeks, or even months, into learning this game, figuring out the systems and characters, and be proud of the progress you make as you battle online, this game will not keep your interest long enough for the full price.

TL;DR: great gameplay, awful visuals, concerning and shady roster choices and DLC, simplicity can make the other person feel bad during laggy matches, get it if you are dedicated to the gameplay already, wait if you love the series for its style and characters, and avoid/wait if you are completely new to the series and/or genre of game

This is the most diappointed I've been in a long time. I'm not usually a gamer these days. But I used to be the wonderkid at the arcade, destroying the older teens and adults in X-Men vs Streetfighter, MvC, MvC2, CvS and CvS2. I thought I would pick this up and give it a try for nostalgia, but it's so bad I created this account just to **** on it.

Gameplay sucks. Do not buy this

Game is fun but there has been 0 love poured into the presentation. Take a quick look at the character select screen to see what I am talking about. The roster is also incredibly boring. UMVC3 is still a lot stronger than this current one, although I would love for them to fix MVCI.

Good: This game is so much fun! I had played previous versions of MVCI and wasn't sure this would hold up. I was blown away! I love fighting games and this is my new favorite fighting game!

bad: This game is a very low effort fighter. A cheap cash grab for the MCU.

First of all, i consider myself an open minded gamer that makes his own opinion, also ive been following the series since children of the atom,
Having said that: the gameplay is OK. They gave us back light kick, and having lp,lk,hp,hk again makes it feel like a fighting game again. The stones aditions and the combos are nice.
Thats about it. I dont have anything else good to say about

What an uncharismatic rooster, i am only interested in playing with like 9 of the guys, and i am a open minded guy. The stages feels like the avengers all over the place, hearing spidey makes me sad
But at least they gave us x.
The graphics? Somehow they dont feel like an upgrade from mvc3, do not buy it till cheaper, and the dlcs, if they dont want to kill their ip, they better give some life to this mediocre at best game

The presentation is awful, the story mode is awful, the extra features aren't fleshed out and while the infinity stone mechanic is interesting this isn't exactly breaking the mold.

When you look at the roster even pretending the rosters of previous games didn't exist it does not give me the feeling of grabbing all the iconic heroes of either the Marvel or Capcom universe. Even if we are ignoring the X-men issue we have the issue with female characters 4 in the base game. Yu got tons of DLC characters including on disc DLC junk but even adding that in the roster wouldn't be good. You would have 6 female characters in a roster of 36 that is just bad. I mean even if we just wanted Marvel cinematic universe characters why wasn't Black Panther in the base roster? Why wasn't Black Widow in the base roster? Why aren't Luke Cage, Iron Fist, Jessica Jones, DareDevil in this game, Quake, Medusa, Scarlet Witch, there is so many ways to diversify the roster or even like skins that revoice characters and reskin them to include things for comics fans like Kate Bishop. Miles, Moonstone, etc? It feels like this was a lazy cash in for Marvel to claim they did a AAA game.

If you look at this roster, and the gameplay, at the mechanics I feel like there is just something better at everything they are doing including ultimate Marvel vs Capcom 3, a game you can buy for your ps4 already. I would rather play Blazblue, Guilty Gear, Dragon Ball Fighters when that comes out, Nitroburst, even Injustice at least offers a bit more interesting stuff. There is so many fighting out there to play this game fails to say why you should play it unless your a die hard fan of X or another character you couldn't play before that you can play now (and there is so few).

The graphics are nothing special, the plot for the Story Mode is bad (they could have done better hence they had a lot of possibilities to make it epic), the voice acting is bad (Capcom does not use professional Voice Actors/Actresses anymore to prevent "extra costs", this has been a thing since Resident Evil Revelations and now they are expanding this practice to other titles), the characters interactions are bad (lines out of place, forced situations, some act like they don't even know eachother despite being in the previous game), the animations are bad (it seems cheap and completly rushed), there are no comicbook-ish endings, just 10 stages that aren't near as espic as MVC3 stages, the OST is one of the worsts in the series with nothing memorable from both sides, the roster is the smallest and the fact they brought 95% of the UMVC3 cast just demonstrates that they are gonna put the characters people wanted to see the most behind a paywall. X-men characters are important? Yes. But still they could choose better MCU characters to put in (Scarlet Witch, Starlord, Black Widow/Winter Soldier/Black Panther which were confirmed DLC already, and many MANY others people asked for). Not even gonna talk about Capcom roster because it's a REALLY bad with some completly bland characters. So that's it, you have a game with a fun gameplay but every other thing is garbage and destroy the whole experience for a game that had everything to be epic, so how in the world they aproved this? I'm so disapoint because when I pay for something I want a complete package and if not I don't mind if there's gonna be DLCs in the near future, at least I want them to make me believe its really extra content. Monster Hunter was in the story mode and her DLC trailer just popped out at the very following day of the game's release. Why not include her in the game already? Sigma and Black Panther are there too and guess what... Theres not a single excuse for this game and people who support this dirty business practice need to reassess their lives. Expand

Especially since the previous game had those characters and the few before it. Which is silly and retarded not to included them when they are the money makers and have way better powers then the Avenger Characters they gave the spotlight too just from them having ownership still of them. They could have worked out some deal with the other franchises to have them be alongside their fellow heroes, like they have been doing. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The best way I could describe this game is that it's half a game at best. The oft mentioned poor graphics don't do the game any favors but are live-able. On top of the poor graphics they've added almost nothing new to the gameplay, it is now 2v2 rather than 3v3 which is different I guess (albeit worse in my opinion). The only real addition is the infinity stones for which the game is named and honestly that's the best part of the game. They just ram you right where the sun don't shine when it comes to characters, as this installment has by far the fewest number for the series, made only worse when they tell you, that for only another $30 (half the OG price? for the bundle? really guys? $8 each otherwise) you can have 6 more characters, so the roster isn't the smallest by such a fat margin I guess (it still is though). Plus lucky us most alternate costumes are also paid dlc and you guessed it can be bought for a $30 bundle price. $120 is wayyy too much for a run of the mill fighting game in my opinion but the game isn't unplayable, if they released all of the paid dlc for free it MIGHT be worth buying. Infinite is a case study on how not to make crossovers. The story mode is really poorly written and if you don’t already know and like the characters, you’ll just waste your time. What’s worse, almost every element of the game is similarly weak. The result is a mediocre game that wastes the potential of its solid combat system. [12/2017, p.54]
