I see this as a huge step back for the Mafia series that was put in the hands of an inept studio. Bullet points for me:

    2. Open World with full ability to go everywhere.
    Cons:
    1. Graphics. Look dated and washed out. Worst lighting I have seen in a game with an orange sheen at sunrise and sunset. Plugged in Mafia II to make sure this was not in my imagination. It is not.
    2. The writing. Horrific usage of modern phrases and contemporary theme of discussion not used in 1968. The overall story structure is sophomoric and did not have the hook and engaging feel of Mafia II.
    3. Prepare to be preached at. I don't care what anyone's social and political view point is until they throw it in my face after I just paid sixty bucks. At the beginning disclaimer they state they will be using racist and inappropriate subject matter to create authenticity. They do that well by:
    a) Degrading African Americans.
    b) Making sure everyone knows how bad Caucasian people are.
    c) Pushing the fact that America is evil...especially in 1968. Evil attackers of attackers of Vietnam. Corrupt and evil white men running the country.
If you are going to preach your view point to the recipients of your story at least make it believable. The writers in this game embarrass themselves.
    4. Overall game play gets repetitive and boring. Does not have the dark drama feel of previous titles. Mafia has never been a real deep game outside of the story line. If you remove the an engaging story as they have there is not much left.
    5. Language. I would have lumped this with the writing but it deserves mention on its own. Prepare to hear totally unnecessary and over usage of the most profane vulgarity for no reason other than to try to be cool. Again I point out the almost sophomoric and immature writing I have had to sit through. I don't mind this language if used to make a point but all of this is severe overkill.

Wait for Watchdogs 2 or replay GTA. This is in no way worth anyone's time or money. Is Studio 13 responsible for this trash? Hard to say and I have wasted enough time with this title.

    BUT
The game has problems. The textures aren't well done and the whole thing looks muddy. I have experienced 5 crashes including the first time i actually booted up the game. The missions are really boring and repetitive. It is a real grind.
Should you buy this game at this time for 50, 60 or 70 euros? No but i don't think that you should skip this one when you see it on sale.
Overall i had fun but i would recommend to buy it at a later date.

I have seen some bugs for sure, but it doesn't take away from the gameplay/story at all. The guns sound amazing, Lincolns finishers feel rewarding, Lincolns subtle little movements after shooting and fist fighting are perfect, and the world is just perfect. I could go on. I would suggest trying to grab this game at redbox if you can. No reason to drop $60 if you're unsure. Hope this helps someone out. Expand

    My Experience

I played Mafia 2, but I never got to play Mafia 1. I enjoyed Mafia 2 when I finally got around to finishing it and I thought the story was great, while the gameplay was okay. The focus in Mafia 2 was obviously the story but you were able to drive around the city if you’d like, it was kind of an open world, but there was nothing much to do in that world.

That's very similar to Mafia 3.

A highly anticipated game that sadly falls short of expectations. Plagues of technical errors and poor graphics that makes it look like it was released during the hay day of the last generation. However, the story that has been crafted makes the game worth the play through. The setting was perfectly crafted with the soundtrack of this game being possibly one of the best in years.

Many are comparing Mafia III to GTA 5. Mainly because of the open world style, along with the purpose of the game being to take out bosses and remove unwanted threats at your pleasure. But, I would like to remind players of another game from Rockstar: L.A. Noire. If anyone has played L.A. Noire, you will find that Mafia accurately resembles that, instead of GTA 5. Despite both games being open-world, there is not much interaction with it despite side missions. Both games perfectly place the player into the 50's (L.A. Noire) and the late 60's (Mafia III), both have excellent sound tracks and both rely upon the story over its other elements.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. My Second (and final) Opinion on this game:

Since my last review, I've played the game for at least another 10 hours. I gave the game a 6/10 based on my early impressions. I hate to admit it, but I may have judge it too quickly and I do apologize for it.

Even though most of my initial impressions of the game have not changed. The driving is still not the best and the sky box still looks terrible. However, I feel like the lasting impression is what really matters in a game. I find that the driving can be enjoyable if you drive fast cars and also by getting upgrades that improve the car's handling and speed. As I engage in more combat and purchase new weapons, I find that shooting with certain weapons to be quite satisfying compared to my earlier opinion. Taking over territories and killing bosses becomes much more enjoyable with better weapons. Other positive aspects or this game is the story telling cut scenes and the soundtrack, I dare to say that its as good or even better than GTA V's. Mafia 3 is not a perfect game, but scoring it a 0 is absurd and very unfair. My initial score was a 6/10, but after actually giving the game a long more than fair chance, I can easily say that it deserves at very least a 7.5 - 8.

The guys @ Hangar 13 are super responsive and seem to be on the ball with updates and adding fan wanted content, which is awesome and not very common. Also yes this is my first review and that is only because I've never felt compelled to write a review in the past but this game is being vastly underrated on this site. I will go ahead and say this is the best Campaign I have ever played. The story is deep here and is vastly untouched in the gaming industry. The issue of race has been extremely well here and you are going to feel connected to these characters. Now for the negatives. Their is no fast travel that is a bit annoying at times (hoping they add this feature soon). The Graphics here are not earthshattering, while the setting is amazing and the music score is great; clearly not the best graphics to date. What they did nail with the graphics are the facial animations, they are some of the best I've every seen in a game (if not the best). The gameplay mechanics are solid if not occasionally dated but honestly if something works then why fix it (Rockstar certainly hasn't changed)? My actual rating for the game is 8.5/10 for story coming so strong but gameplay occasionally feeling repetitive. This game though is a must play. There are so many things that destroy the gameplay. Police is joke, AI almost non existent, the city feels dead, the car flips over nothing because the streets arent connected correctly.

The worst: You do the same thing 9 times in a row till the game ends. Talk to a contact, do 4-6 missions for him, kill the boss, kill his boss, next.

The whole gameplay works way too slow, if an enemy appears behind you, it takes you 3 seconds to turn around (at least) and shoot him, which means you're dead when you play on hard, which you should because 'hard' equals 'medium' in comparable games.

This beeing said, it still is fun. It has times, especially in the beginning, when the presentation is just really amazing. It feels right. If you get used to Lincoln hes an amazing character. But after the first 2 hours this drops too and you hate the game for having unskippable cut scenes. The Driving is good, the sneaking is fun, the shooting works great (long distance headshots with a silenced pistol are satisfying) and the urge to shoot Marcano in the face keep you going.

Sadly, if you compare this game to GTA 5, which you should, because they have A LOT of similarities, it loses in almost every aspect. This doenst mean its a bad game, but if you played GTA 5 you get annoyed by a lot of things that where just a lot better.

Overall I would give it a 3, but the fact i kept going till the end makes me think im too hard on this game so i end up with a 5.

Ok, this game is 100% not a Zero, anyone who says so didn't play it... It is however very buggy and pretty generic when it comes to actual gameplay (it's basically a poor GTA clone). Despite this the acting, story, and setting almost make up for its shortcomings.

The acting is amazing. I wanted to complete each and every story mission just to see the performance of each of the cast

The acting is amazing. I wanted to complete each and every story mission just to see the performance of each of the cast members. Some you loved and wanted to see more of and others you couldn't wait to kill. A+ for the cast

The story was also a great ride. Far from just a generic revenge tale, you really wanted to see what was going to happen next, and the flash back/forwards in the cut scene worked well for the most part.

The setting is by far the star of the show though. Being set in the Deep South in 1968 was a very bold move. They pulled no punches with the racism of the time. Playing as a 1/2 black character you get to see this first hand from the way cops would show up instantly in a predominantly white neighborhood vs. maybe not even showing up at all in the poorer districts to not being allowed in to some business/restaurants due to the color of your skin.

Overall the game needs a lot of work, you can tell this game was pushed out way too early, it could have been so much better. That said, I would recommend it to anyone who enjoys open world GTA style games.

The story in Mafia 3 is very well written, the characters are well played; and the soundtrack is impressive, not only using very popular and memorable tunes, but also some obscure songs that really set the tone in certain scenes.

The shooting mechanics are standard (nothing special), and the same goes for the cover system, which are definitely not broken. I played on hard with no aim assist, and the shooting/cover gameplay was pretty good throughout, nothing that glaringly bad or awkward to complain about, and nothing that great or unique to give high praise.

The driving (on land) is a bit heavy and can feel awkward especially in the beginning of the game, but once I set the driving option to "simulation" in the pause menu, and changed the camera view to inside of the car overlooking the hood, I got accustom to it pretty quickly and didn't have many problems there on out. Boats are a different story. They tend to be too loose when turning, and too much damage can happen way to easily. Driving in boats is a big "meh".

There is a lot to do in the game besides the main story. I enjoy collecting old Playboy and Hotrod magazines from the 60's, and that level of novelty is a perfect addition to help you stray from the monotony of busting up rackets/hideouts when you're not playing the main story.

This game is glitchy. and I'm sure that you've read this already (and rightfully so) because again, THIS GAME IS GLITCHY!

I've had my game crash about five to ten times while playing it, but I never lost any real progress because of the autosaving. I can see it being frustrating if you're right in the middle of a long story mission with no autosave, and then you crash and you have to start over. There are also graphical glitches in the game. Sometimes when changing from gameplay to cutscene and back to gameplay, you'll notice that the lighting on the characters can get very bright and stay like that for a minute or two. I've seen cars spin out randomly, people walk on the air, and other minor glitches that you wouldn't see in a polished game.

If you're on the fence about getting this game because of the glitches, wait another month or so, and hopefully a patch or two will address these issues. Glitches like these usually get fixed, and I would say in this games case there is a high probability that they will be fixed because it's a game by a big company in 2K.

Overall Mafia 3 was a fun game with a great story, mediocre shooting/driving, and a glitchy/buggy experience throughout (even though I would say that the glitches/bugs are not game-breaking).

If the game doesn't ever get patched to fix the glitches/bugs then I would give this game a 5/10

If the bugs were addressed, and I didn't have to take them into consideration because they're not effecting gameplay, then I would give this game a 7.5/10

as for right now with the way the full game is I'll give it a 6.5/10 (rounding up to 7/10 using metacritic ratings)

There is no basic details in the game like: footprint, if you come out from the water you wet the ground or leave wet footprint, the blood on clothes are painted ridiculous, if the car hit you, you barely fall or not at all! no bullets left on the ground. the car barely damaged, if your car turned upside down and want to get out from the car its just teleport you out., interact with items, like opening fridge in mafia 2 even if its useless its give you feeling of freedom and lack of many similar little details that we expect to have in games at 2016. People bagged to bring back fuel option from mafia 1, it is so hard to implement ? i don't think so. The in game dialog between the rackets with fixed camera from above without moving characters just standing and talking without changing a single camera view is ridicules and remind me the games of 2000's... compare to his open world competitor game I feel this game like godfather the game vs GTA 5. Where is the details people ?! mafia 1 was famous about the details and giving realistic feeling of atmosphere. the mafia 3 gives nothing but "gang" game with poor graphics and unrealistic like saint row and simple as godfather. Customization ? not yet! we have to wait for the update and maybe DLC to include it ... shame.. should be built in out of the box. remember 2016...

Full of bugs is not a big problem because after a few months they can patch it but it has holes like death star ... even in BETA games i can't see such mistakes and so unpolished games... there was any QA during development ?!

It's a shame that after so much time waiting we get so cheap game that shame of the industry of open world games at 2016. I would be smarter to delay the release date until they completely test the game and adding all the further coming customization options and more...

Personally I am very disappointed from the game.

The Graphic all were so pixelated and without high textures at all, and i wonder why you even need high resolution setting when everything were almost the same as low resolution.

    Conclusion:
This game is a waste of time and money, i rather play a solid game with freezing and crashing, with great graphic and fps.
Don't even buy this if you don't want to go though all this stupid issue they have before even publishing it.So i refunded it.

The audience for this particular game, the paying kind, is majority white and gaming is not PC. It is fun. The two concepts are semantic antonyms. It is distinctly unfunny in the current cultural context of media whipped anti-White and police hatred, with riots and racially incited murder at sky high levels, only this time it is black on white. The FBI crime figures are sombre reading. Th hypocrisy of stereotyping white Italian mafia types is well pointed out by others here. Given the gameplay also suffered technical and creative issues, I wonder, did the team's management decide to also have 'diversity' quotas in the programming team? Karma. Expand

I'd rate it above average because the story is great, the actors are fantastic and the soundtrack is brilliant. Unfortunately the sheer amount of bugs, graphical issues and gameplay issues really hold this title back. Firstly, you'll notice that the facial animations are stunning but as soon as you look at the rest of the world you'll quickly realise it's a total mix of high quality and low quality. The rain and weather effects are generally beautiful but then you'll suddenly see a super low res texture or very noticeable pop-up, or perhaps your characters limbs poking through something they shouldn't be able to pass through. This mixed bag of quality is prevalent throughout the entire game. For instance, while the soundtrack is amazing you'll very quickly be hearing a lot of the same music over and over because there are only 3 radio stations and the content isn't huge. There's a very large open world map with some fairly pretty vistas and towns, but unfortunately there's very little to do other than the story missions which is quite disappointing. It almost seems as if they game is trying to deter you from exploring, and perhaps it is, because lo and behold almost as soon as I decided to roam around, ignoring the missions, and undertaking whatever destruction and fun took my fancy a whole plethora of issues became apparent; NPCs reacting strangely or spouting incorrect responses to what you're doing, getting stuck on a curb because for some reason my character decided he can't climb a 2 inch step anymore, weather cycling too rapidly and then even sometimes key mission triggers not working (I spent about 10 minutes at one point just trying to make a mission start icon actually start the mission). These faults clearly indicate that the game wasn't ready for release, so why they decided to shove it out there I can't imagine. You can't release a AAA game with such glaring issues. I'm not going to return the game, I'll finish it off and get enjoyment out of it for sure, but it's a shame that what could have actually been an absolutely stellar and unique open world adventure is actually just an average game. The feel of the driving mechanics is fine but if you want to have fun driving around the map doing crazy things... well, you won't. Because nothing is designed for casual fun or exploration. The shooting mechanics are functional, but not quite as smooth as they should be. The death animations though are absolutely brilliant, sometimes enemies drop to the ground and writhe around in agony for extended periods of time, begging for help. But for every time something impresses you, two more glitches or shortcomings will rear their head. After watching one enemy react to being hit in the back from a distance, cowering in pain and shock, I then watched him run away and continue fighting as if he hadn't been injured. So the game wows you with something pretty cool but then pulls the rug out from under itself basically showing you a lack of depth in the detail and a lack of cohesion. What's the point in having a bunch of cool little things if the world that contains them doesn't come together properly? This is Mafia III's main issue. There are great little things about it but the overall game hasn't been put together properly; it lacks the polish of a game like GTA V or Red Dead Redemption. It's even more problematic than something like Sleeping Dogs. If you play it, play it for the story, there's nothing else here to write home about, but luckily the story is engrossing enough that many people will choose to ignore the game's faults and push through. The story telling is really where it goes from present to past,
Something like an rewind theatre. What lets it down is the bugs and omission of much needed things such as fast travel, customization and lack of imagination.

Hangar 13 has just used the template of many open world games and stealth games such gta, Hitman and splinter cell. The side missions in the game feels repetitive after certain point. The takedowns have different animation but loses its freshness as it goes. The shooting mechanics feel compelling and it really feels good when you hit a head shot.

The characters in this game are given equal importance just like the protagonist. The protagonist from the previous Mafia game has been added and he plays a major role. We can call these character for help like supplying ammunition, support during gun combat. This is the only thing that feels fresh in this game. The cover system is good. The AI in this games is dumb. The people just roam around the same place, along the same path for them to be killed.

Various key elements are omitted in this game. There's no customization. There is no safe house like the one used in Mafia 2. You can't change your dress. The soundtrack and the back ground score in this game is top notch. The 60's style of music feels good. The use of alligators in the game is limited but it is fun. The vehicles looks good until the frame rate drops.

Mafia 3 as game is really good until someone compares it with Mafia 2 and other open world games like grand theft auto.. The game will of course get a patch where the bugs will be removed. I wonder how a studio that made a game like Mafia 2 which had some really amazing ideas came up with very less innovative ideas for a franchise that is almost equal to grand theft auto, bio shock.

A little more innovative ideas would've made this game an alternative to gta. At lest they could've copied stuffs from Mafia 2.

    Pros
    1. Story
    2. Driving
    3 presentation
    4. Sound track and background score
    Cons
    1. No fast travel
    2. Bugs(will be removed)
    3. Omission of key elements that were removed from Mafia 2.
    4. Respective missions.

I bought Mafia 3 day one and don't regret my purchase what-so-ever. The 1960's setting is super interesting to me, not only because of the veitnam war, or the racial tension but because my father who I have a great deal of respect for is a Vietnam vet and pretty much grew up in Louisiana. So you could say I am a little biased. The gameplay is there, as well as plenty of content. Yes, it can get a bit repetitive if you play for several hours at a time, but given that is is a Mob/Mafia revenge game it is going to entail a lot of killing mob/mafia members and that is exactly what you do A LOT. The voice acting is some of the strongest I have ever heard in a video game, and certainly adds to the immersion. The cars handle a bit more arcady than I would like. Hanger 13 has stated, and I am paraphrasing here that "they wanted the driving to be a bit more arcady so that EVERYONE would be able to drive efficiently." I feel they dropped the ball on this. If they were looking to make things easier for more casual gamers that is totally cool, but maybe add it as an option to have a more realistic driving experience. Cars back then were extremely heavy and as big as boats so it completely takes me out of the experience when I am hugging corners at 100 mph in something the size of a small yacht. I did however love the "Louisiana Bayou" setting. It looks extremely accurate to the time, and when I say accurate of the time I just mean the over all feel of the Bayou. That kind of mystic/supernatural feeling. Hangar 13 did an incredible job making New Bordeau (The name of the city in Mafia 3) feel like as big a character as the main one Lincoln Clay. I completely enjoyed my time with Mafia 3 and I am starting again to see how other options play out (you will know what I mean if you play it, I dont want to give too much away). I would suggest going into the game reminding yourself that this is a new studio's (Hangar 13) first game ever. Yes, some of the developers that worked on previous Mafia titles did work on mafia 3 but it's safe to say they were extremely outnumbered. Also, try not to compare it to GTA 5. Of coarse GTA 5 looks and feels a lot better, but they have also had a little over 5 chances at fine tuning, and building on their franchise, whereas again this is hangar 13's first title as a studio. I should say that I have experienced 3 or 4 crashes on ps4 and some minor pop-ins but other than that I haven't noticed anything extreme though, I am no computer tech so someone with a trained eye might notice more. If there's an upside to it being released in 2016 it's that some of the bugs can be fixed with updates, but it shouldn't have to be this way. What ever happened to games being released in a finished state? I personally blame Microsoft and Sony for introducing DLC, making it the norm so to speak. Maybe the reason why so many games feel so shallow these days is that developers think they can "fix" them later. Well you can fix the fps, you can fix a few of the bugs, but there are some things you just can't fix like the industry.

This may not make it better than any of those games individually, but combined, it creates a comfortably familiar experience in its own game.

Once you complete the introduction story and are introduced to the cast of characters, the game walks you through taking over your first territory. You are free to take out/over as many rackets as you like until you do enough damage to claim the territory as your own. You will also need to collect fuses that are spread around town (along with collectible album covers, playboy and hot rod magazines, and Vargas paintings). These fuses need to be collected to tap into junction boxes in each district that act as wire taps to controlling the area. Once you have control of the rackets and tapped the junction boxes you are given control of the territory and access to your first underboss. The city then opens 2 more territories for you to continue your power grab and extract your revenge on the top crime boss who double crossed you.

As you unlock each territory a new underboss is at your disposal. As you gain new underbosses you begin to feel more powerful based on the skills and services they provide. You start to feel like you are climbing your way up the ladder of the underworld. These underbosses are important to how you would like to tailor the game to your play style. Each one has more perks that are opened to you the better you treat them. These perks come in the form of weapons, explosives, man power, influencing police, and improving personal traits... to mention just a few. Depending on how you choose to build your empire will be the way you choose to take care of the underboss who aligns with the skills most important to you. Don't disrespect any one of them though or they will rebel and rise against you.

This is where I'm at in the game and am enjoying it so far. It's not a perfect game. It's not too difficult. Using stealth to thin out groups of enemies helps improve your chances. rather than trying to take them all on in a gun fight. I'm sure as I gain access to the ability to call in manpower from Vito Scarletta I will be able to go toe to toe more often. I'm playing on hard difficulty with low aim assist and using simulated driving mode instead of the 'normal' mode (which is more forgiving in how the vehicles handle). Sim mode makes it more challenging when attempting to evade the police who come after you with abandon once they have been alerted to a crime you commit. Some times you can't outrun them in your vehicle and the best thing to do is get out and hoof it. I look forward to what lies ahead in the 7 remaining districts I have yet to encounter. That's a gripe I had with GTA was that the map in single player was great but I never really had a reason to travel around the city other than to get to the next story mission. In Mafia 3 I'm traveling back and forth taking care of my underbosses and taking over rackets. In the end it feels like it will be an 80+ hour game for me but I like to take my time and enjoy the experience.

The developers even warn you that the game will be rough, but to tone it down would be to cheat people. Whitewashing history serves no one, people really behaved the way they do in this game no matter how you want to try and soften it. It is what it is.
I like the cut scenes, where the story is being filled in, between what you are doing.
The only negative I would say at this point is that there seems to be some technical issues. I saw some wonky lighting effects. I also saw some that were pretty neat, such as headlights off a wet street. I know they are trying, we have to accept that. For the most part they delivered well. I would also say that while the game looks good, it is not this gen great. It looks like it could be at home on the last gen consoles. But that is not necessarily a bad thing. Considering how many companies are reaching back and profiting off of 8 and 16 bit type games. The most important thing is the story, which is really really good. I am playing on a PS4.

Mafia III features one of the best "2 hour prologue" I have experience for a long while. Introducing many characters, backgrounds, interesting cut-scenes convincingly showcasing the scenario and motivation for the rest of the game. Just wonderful.

Afterwards, it becomes a "normal" Open-world game I would describe as a mix between Assassins Creed, Far Cry 4 and GTA V, of course. The side-missions are OK but the story is what drives the game. The driving itself feels better than in GTA (at least for me). Shooting mechanics are OK but the stealth and cover mechanics require some getting used to it.
The graphics are ok. Not perfect, especially when you are driving fast, you can see pop-ins and texture reloading, but for the size of this game and lower loading times compared to GTA V, I can live with it.
It seems as if Hangar 13 did a bold move to "change" the scenario for a Mafia game so drastically. But as soon as you start playing more than a few hours, you see the similarities, connections and realise: changes aren't that big.
Overall, I am really enjoying the first 10+x hours and am looking for the next. The story is good, the music is pure awesomeness and the motivation drives me. As many Open-World games, some things feel repetitive after some time, but with the scenario, music and game-play I hardly feel any fatigues and am happy to continue Lincolns story.

    2) soundtrack is awesome, one of the best things in the game.
    3) story so far is ok, not enough side missions for my taste.
    4) in general it looks a lot like an unfinished game. it'd definitely not worth 70 euros or whatever is the price.

An unpolished and bugged filled adventure, which clearly was not even close to being ready for release. It's obvious the glorious pre release reviews were paid ones. The lighting is so poor there's parts of the game you can't explore at night because it's just to dark, I thought maybe this was added as a nice slice of realism, but when the goons could see me and shoot at me, I knew it was just c grade game development. The driving mechanics are shockingly bad and what should be the distinct sound of an American muscle car of that generation, sounds more like a chihuahua trying to pass wind. The sun looks more like a super nova that's on a collision course with earth, it's that unrealistic and blinding. In general the weather affects have that feeling it's 2006 not 2016. It's just a woeful attempt at trying to cash in on the previous 2 mafia games, which I'm not sure that the developers realise, that you actually were a part of the mafia. The soundtrack is great and the cut scenes are some of the best you'll see. Voice acting is very good, not much after that is a positive. it's an open world game, yet you have no interaction with it, you can't buy weapons from shops, food, drink, clothes, haircuts and all the things I thought open world games were about. The only clipping in this mafia, is when you're in sneak mode and you disappear into walls. What a terrible effort after promising so much, but that's gaming, it's a disgrace and good reason to never pre order anything. Expand

Story - This is being told in an interesting flash forward/ Documentary style which is working well. The voice acting and character modelling is great and there has been some real depth added by referencing historical events.

Visual - Suffers a bit from pop ins and occasional inconsistency in player and background skins going a bit haywire. Good variety in NPC skins but somehow this hasnt carried over to the guys you are shooting at who tend to often to be clones of each other. That being said its a beautiful well set out map.

Gameplay - Varies from feeling really satisfying to being very frustrating. Actual run and gun gameplay is great, weapon switching in the heat of battle works well and Melee is quite effective, enemy NPC's react convincingly to gunshot wounds and the general AI can be quite unpredictable at times. On the other side of things the Cover system can be a pain and throwables arent all that reliable.

Overall - Really good game that probably needs just a little more time in the oven to be a really great game, polish is missing in a few areas and I suspect there maybe an element of repetitiveness as I continue on but still feels like a solid 8 and worth a play.

I've been playing on consoles for over three years (hey, I was strictly a PC gamer before that.) and I have never had so much trouble in keeping the camera in the middle of the screen. You turn the stick left and the camera goes up, you push the stick up - the camera goes down. Really hard to manuever. I've tried changing the settings but doesn't seem to help much. Camera also turns really slow so when guys are sneaking up behind you it's hard to turn and get a bead on them. Have not experienced any bugs yet. Otherwise, I really bought the game for the New Orleans setting which is fantastic. I've never played a Grand Theft Auto game but have played Mafia 1 and 2 on PC so I can't compare it to GTV. I don't think the graphics are that bad, the voice acting is great and the music is fantastic. I grew up in the 60's and 70's and it's spot on. Can't comment on the story because I haven't got that far into it yet. My main complaint is the controls! Also, the print is very small on the screen so you can't sit comfortably on your couch. You have to practically be on top of the TV to read it. They also do not give you any information on how to read the map or what all the symbols mean!!! Really stupid! I'm driving by symbols and I have no clue what I'm passing up. Also they don't explain the symbols on the HUD either. Some are easy to figure out but others are not. Nothing in Options menu to explain them. Also, the on-screen instructions are only up there for about 2 seconds - by the time you scooch up on the couch and get closer to the TV to read them they are gone! Really annoying. Driving is not too bad (anything is better than Watch Dogs!) but it's hard to see the traffic lights (might be easier on PC) until you are right on top of them. This is probably a bad PC port I would think. Overall, it's an okay game so far with some very annoying details! Expand

Also the world isn't very much alive en is just there for screenfilling. The only fun and good looking part is the bayou.
This game only deserves a 2 because of the soundtrack, driving and shooting part. The rest is just a awful mess. Maybe with a patch or 8 you can have fun with this game.

I will be quick. This is a great game with some flaws. The story, acting, design, visuals (graphics are at times mind boggling) is all top notch.

What is missing, is some mission diversity, more difference amongst feeling or damage from weapons, and more overall customizations.

This is a solid game and I am sure most people will like it.

I can only imagine that this is either, another case of Meta Critic vandalism, that we are starting to see more and more of late. Or, these are all players that loved the previous Mafia games, and are struggling to adapt to this more open iteration.

I tend to rate my games based on how long I can play in a single session without loosing interest. In the case of Mafia 3, I practically have to get torn away from the Console by my wife, or by my brain demanding that I GO TO BED!

I am roughly 15 hours in, and am having fun with the great driving and combat mechanics. The missions seem varied enough and and because everything you do in M3 requires $'s I've been completing the side quests too. The dynamic soundtrack is effective at creating tension and the tracks from the late 60s really help set the scene.

The game does have its issues, some here have mentioned stuttering, crashes and dropped frames. I have experienced all of these issues. On one occasion the game crashed completely, without warning. The lightning engine has its problems too, occasionally flashing brightly or going dark whilst driving. The rain is either heavy or non existent and can change in a heartbeat.

Are any of these problems game breaking? not really, I certainly loose some of the Immersion that the developers have tried so hard to maintain. But over all this is a well crafted open world, that I'm just can't stay away from.

First and foremost I would like to say and to acknowledge that I have never written a Metacritic review. I want that to be know now. I did not create this account to review this game, and this game only. So lets begin with the review of Mafia 3.

My first impression's of Mafia 3 are extremely favorable. The story is good and very well could be a movie, and in all honesty, its the reason to continue playing the game. The voice acting, script, and soundtrack are 10/10. The Story is not only compelling yet multi-leveled.

If you come into this game assuming it is all death and destruction you will be disappointed, or pleasantly surprised. The Story is not only hard hitting, it also shows a very human and emotional side. The story and pacing is very good. The soundtrack is very much Vietnam era. It is amazing. From Otis Redding to CCR. It is amazing. I found myself driving around in the car just to listen to the radio.

Moving on from Soundtrack and story(with that said story and soundtrack get a 10), Lets go to actual mechanics. This is where Mafia 3 starts to stutter. It doesn't break, but it certainly starts to bend. The AI is extremely easy, all most to the point that it is laughable. However, if like me, you want to feel like Jason Bourne and just burn people, you will find it fun to play. I will say if you want a more realistic sense of enemies, this game doesn't deliver. Moving cover to cover sometimes seems clunky and a pain really, yet, not to the point that it ruins the overall experience. Aiming is tight and responsive depending on Aim Assist(which can be changed at will during campaign.) I never found it a problem until hit detection didn't work, which, trust me it won't sometimes. Moving, running, and vaulting does feel unrefined. It can throw you off more than once. You will find yourself in full view of the Police, or enemies simply for the fact the cover system just failed. The mechanics need serious work. Again, not a deal breaker, yet annoying.

Driving Mechanics. The cars feel heavy and unresponsive. Yet believable. It just works. It doesn't feel like Forza, nor should it. Its meant to be a period piece and I think they did a great job with it. The driving in my opinion is spot on. Heavy, slow, yet somehow amazingly immersive. Did I mention the radio?

Moving on from Mechanics to graphics. I reviewed this game on the Xbox one. Cut scenes are exceptional, and very impressive. I would par them with Uncharted 4, with amazing voice acting. However, yes there is a however. The game looks polished yet it seems very grainy overall and the pop in is distracting. Certain colors look not only dull, but unreal. Shadows move in a weird pulse and edges are not smooth. I compared both Xbox one, with PS4 and while the PS4 seemed more fluid they both looked choppy. PC version believe it or not looked worse than both. While you are playing. You will notice the grainy graphics, yet, overall they are very good. Animations are top notch. I love the way Lincoln moves after firing his weapon, or the way he moves when firing a weapon. They all look and sound different and that is hard to work. I credit them with this attention to detail.

Lets move on to overall Presentation. By presentation I mean the way the game shows, explains and shows available content. This is wear Mafia 3 fails miserable. When you open the map you never know where, why, and who. It is frustrating to figure it out. Playing games my entire life I found it extremely frustrating to figure out not only where to be, but in what order and why. This is the biggest negative on the game I have. The game throws to much stuff at one time, and in many different locations without reason, explanation or why it's there. I found this to be beyond madding.

Playing the game gets extremely repetitive after about 8 hours in, which can be cured by play style, yet I found that it doesn't matter much in the long run. There are collectables and upgrades to be had to work toward, yet it does get old.

Final Verdict. I give this game a 7.5/10. Based on story, soundtrack and voice acting alone I give this a 10. All things considered I think my score is correct.

Starts out well with great looking cutscenes, a fun opening, then it descends into an incredibly repetitive and buggy open world game after a few hours. The cutscene graphics are also deceiving because the gameplay graphics, particularly the ugly skyboxes, don't impress. Just buy the soundtrack instead of the game.

The only saving grace is the soundtrack, but since I don't care about music unless it's absolutely killer (say what you want a mass effect 1 and 2, but the sound was quite literally perfect in both of those games), they're not getting a point for that.

This is a GTA rip off with worse gameplay in every single way, and worse graphics to boot. Despite the okay car physics, I still found it a massive pain to navigate around in a vehicle to the point where I was fondly remembering GTA 4.

I have nothing to say about the story, because I was expecting it to be awful, and it was. Maybe you'll like it if you hate white people, but I don't think that's a very large market, and if it is then it's certainly not for video games. It's a shame the game mechanics are terrible too.

They took what was bad about Mafia 2 and just made things worse. Mafia 1 was a great game, and it has devolved with every subsequent release. This is no exception.

I doubt there will be a mafia 4 at this rate, and that's a good thing.

Gun play is very much akin to GTA and that is a-ok with me. I would have gone to a 10 but I did have about a minute of audio clipping in a cut scene -1.

Bottom line - best thing I've played since Uncharted 4 - if the rest of the game maintains even half of the quality of the first 5 hours, it's an easy game of the year contender.

Despite a few technical issues, I have really enjoyed what i have played of the Mafia so far. They have captured the alienation of African-Americans in this time period really well, and the story is riddled with classic Mafia-esque themes; betrayal, and revenge. When they release an update for this game it will make it even better as well! Can't wait for it :)

Its stealth is too repetitive, its gunfights too familiar, and its driving too boring to support anything else that’s going on. Despite how clever it manages to be in portraying the conquest and control of a criminal enterprise, the nuts-and-bolts missions feel like busywork, and it never fully explores the most interesting aspects of its setting. It’s better than Mafia II, but that’s damning it with faint praise.

This is a game whose best moments are diluted by a torrent of filler, whose beauty is obscured by its technical shortcomings, and whose obvious potential is squandered by a lack of polish. That weird orange sky is, alas, the least of its problems. [Christmas 2016, p.110]

It could have been a really great sandbox for one evening. It’s a shame the developers decided to extend it by over a dozen completely redundant hours, because they had fresh ideas for around one fifth of the campaign and made the rest of the game repetitive as hell. [12/2016, p.48]
