This game surprised me, and I don't even like FPS much anymore. The game's actually fun for once, unlike critically acclaimed GTA V for example. Not really sure why but it's got the most important thing going, the fun factor.

This is game about a complexed racial afro shooting and burning and running over innocent white females and men. Its a game made with hate in mind. Shame it has a real good soundtrack, but i wont let my kids play it. It has NOTHING to do with a "Mafia" game, just the name.

Overall I enjoyed this game to an extent, the setting was cool, the story was good, but not great, the controls worked well and the cover system is pretty good overall. I see a lot of people comparing it to GTA v, This game stands no where near GTA V when it comes to story, polish or graphics.

That being said, it is still a pretty decent game in it's own right. Definitely does not

Pros: Story, setting, game play. The city itself looks pretty good and is detailed, great collectibles!

Cons: Repetitive missions, bad graphics on some stuff, especially the reflections on the cars, poor textures on a lot of the NPCs.

Definitely not a bad game to sit down and kill some time with, but also not a great one. Another 6 months in development and some additional creativity on missions could have really helped this game.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I was sad when I first played this game, sucked in by the hype like many other mafia fanboys.

Controls are handy and driving doesn't feel too sluggish, and the characters aren't as annoying just really dull.
Story is your standard revenge plot. Side missions are so god damn boring. Go there kill some dudes get this truck do it again rinse and repeat. Some other missions require you killing some mob boss like in Vito's secondary mission. Separating is easy. 9 districts 3 under bosses.

There are some enjoyable moments, like killing the southern union and the river boat scene when taking over the french ward and the large amount of bugs that make some missions hard to complete. But the rest of the game is boring. 4/10 only buy if you want to see the bugs.

First of all - Mafia I was far, far, far better. NPC behaviour are completly broken, stealth mode is a joke, side mission - all the same. Again - lets play Mafia I - it is how it should be done.
Just another 'AAA' with hype before release, and crap after.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The only good point of this game is its satisfactory brutal takedowns.. Apart from that, here's a list of what I hate most about Mafia III:
    - clunky, rocking-boat driving mechs reminded me of GTA 4, had to switch to simulation driving.
    - no effin' MANUAL SAVE SLOTS!!! it's a horrendous exp if you're going for platinum.
    - no replay value at all since you needed to play the game at least twice for platinum.
    - intro is almost a carbon copy of GTA V's intro but a poorly done one.
    - shotguns are OP in this game and you'll be in critical state after a single blast from it.
    - whoever gets the racket DOES NOT matter, whoever gets the district will takeover them anyway.
    - half of the trophy list are story-related. a few requires multiple playthru.
    - most of the enemies are bullet-sponges as they barely stagger after being shot at.
    - cutscenes are not as gruesome as the trophy description i.e. burned Tommy Marcano beyond recognition, gutted Lou like a catfish.
    - if you messed up the spare/kill racket informants/bosses, you will have to start over.

Adding onto the story, the voice acting and character development was really excellent. John Donovan may just be one of my favorite video game characters ever.
The map itself was pretty cool. It fit the description of being pseudo New Orleans.
Large shootouts, despite how sparse they can be, are much improved in contrast to Mafia 2. Aim assist is still a meme though.

    Con's:
Painfully repetitive gameplay mechanics. I remember the first thing I thought when I got past the first district was "Christ, I hope I don't have to do that again." Sure enough, you have to do it again for every district. It basically goes like this:
Talk to a contact, you get a set amount of monetary damage to cause to a racket. You do that by killing enforcers, interrogating people who work for the racket, and destroying various goods. Eventually after causing enough damage, you kill the racket boss. Done. Repeat for the next racket(2 in a district), and that's a complete district. You then do that for another 8 districts(9 in total), and then game over. In other words, it's boring/maybe even annoying.

The next biggest con in my opinion is how "empty" the open world is. There's nothing to do, nothing to interact with. You simply just want to go directly from Mission A to Mission B. Once you beat the game, you'll find yourself never playing it again. In other open world games such as GTA 5, you can still mess around in singleplayer for hours after the story is over. They just have that true open world feel to it.

The NPC's are laughably challenged. I couldn't count how many times I took out giant globs of enemies by stealth killing them one by one. The stealth system is OP in that manner. You hide behind something, whistle, and kill the poor sap that comes over to investigate. Just by milking that, you can seamlessly kill every enemy in a mission.

The graphics honestly feel past-gen. The skybox looks like it was watercolor painted by a 5 year old, and the lighting frequently bugs. Texture pop in is a real issue, and draw distance is poop. Not to mention FPS is locked at 30. No soft body physics on cars, so you can drive off a cliff and come out with a few paint scratches.

That's about all I have to give. In a nutshell, the game was just a big fat disappointment. Definitely not worth the $60 I paid.

Don't even get me started. All the missions are the same, you just go in & kill the enemies. You can either do it in stealth mode or just go loud by shooting and kill everyone.

Games are repetitive in general to me, but like most daily things in life, I find that motivation and passion to do them. To me, the hallmark of a great game is if it can get me invested enough to WANT to do those things. Yes, in gaming design, those missions and side quests are definitely repetitive, but I loved the characters, setting and story enough to care about doing those missions. I'm sort of like a white hat in Westworld. It aslo helped that I played really slowly, cruising to the great soundtrack, obeying traffic rules, and exploring the city, like a virtual tourist.

The first few hours of this game does a great job of bringing the era and time period to life just as greatly as mafia 2 did…
The world felt alive, hearing npcs on the sidewalks talk about martin Luther king jr, James earl ray, john F Kennedy… and the soundtrack in this game is just as perfect as mafia 2s soundtrack was…
And there are a few nice touches to the game like the radio getting staticy when you drive through tunnels…
And then the game cracks and becomes what it’s not and was never intended to be… A generic open world liberation game…
Mafia 3 feels like an Assassins Creed game and ironically suffers from the same thing recent ac games have suffered from…
Mafia has never been about its open world… It’s been about being a time machine... it’s why I loved mafia 2 and it’s why I loved most of the assassin’s creed games… Mafia 2 brought you back in time to live in a world that felt foreign… it made me feel nostalgic for a time period I didn’t even get to live through... it had me listening to music from the 40s and 50s in my everyday life and it immersed me into an epic experience because there was so much love, care, and detail inside of every main mission and the world around you… It all felt hand crafted…
Mafia 3 shifted its focus from being an experience to being a video game the moment it opens up…
And this is where its cracks start to show
The game structure is the same throughout… You’re tasked with doing monetary damage to a quote unquote business… each business is different but despite this you do same thing over and over and over for 20 hours… interrogate a target.. They tell you where the product is... you destroy the product, kill some targets, and get an underboss to come out from hiding...kill him… rinse and repeat...
Once an underboss is killed you can give that section of the city to one of your underbosses for an added perk, careful to keep all 3 happy so they don’t turn on you…
You have to do this Twice to get the main boss to come out… and this mission to kill the top boss in each city’s section are the greatest moments in the entire game.. so many epic and memorable levels to experience here… and the fact that they make up less than half of the game is completely unacceptable…
This doing damage to bring out the underbosses and killing them to bring out the boss is a great idea
I have no issue with this formula being used from start to finish.. what I do take issue is the fact that the structure of these missions dont change…
Every last mission should be as fleshed out as the kill whoever missions… which again are great points in the game…
But especially after experiencing witcher 3.. there’s no excuse for your main missions in an open world to not even have half the heart witchers side mission do let alone its campaign missions…
Sure make me do damage to bring them out, but make each mini boss its own hand crafted experience and story like the main bosses are.. Especially considering they’re required for story progression…
They feel like rinse and repeat liberation points throughout...
If that means the story goes from 20 hours to 12, I’m happy...
a 12 hour masterpiece is worth more to me than 20 hours of the same thing beat by beat…
The actual gameplay itself I felt is a bit unbalanced and inconsistent…
The guns in this game took far too long to reload for the amount of enemies you had to deal with.. sure you can call in for help during missions, but it hardly ever mattered…
You’d constantly get surrounded so cover didn’t matter, even if it did the cover system was super awkward leading you to pop right up trying to switch from cover to cover….enemies felt like bullet sponges, so you’d run out of a clip while dealing with 3 or 4 at a time and while you reloaded it would be over for you…
Even on the games easiest difficulty I felt it was too easy to die considering the circumstances..
And for some reason the main target in these missions takes damage like a tank…throwing the feel of the entire game away every time you encounter one…
You could also stealth around and take out enemies ninja style if you’d like…
Since you do have a voodoo doll to distract enemies and you can whistle to bring them towards you 1 at a time…
The outside world is a bit of a letdown too, as cops hardly feel like a threat at all.. More like ornaments…
And you have to constantly deal with citizens running to call the copy every time you hop in a car like watch dogs but worse...
And they call them unrealistically fast as do the goons calling for back up….
An extreme annoyance that I can kill someone before they say a word and it’s too late.. Reinforcements are here or cops are on their way…
And honestly other than cut scenes or the occasional gunman dropping the n word... I felt like just another white protagonist as no one on the street treated me any different... which was odd considering you do deal with the city’s presence of racism later on in the game…
But the racism seems to only be reserved for missions, failing to ultimately bring the world to life..
I feel like those few missions would have been more impactful if I actually got to feel what it was like to be in the shoes of an African American during the mid-60s.. As I’m sure it was far more and far worse than just being called the n word every now and then and only if you were a mobster destroying drugs and shooting places up……
That being said... mafia 3 still has its moments of greatness…
The cut scenes, the characters, the sound tract… and the missions the developers actually tried at, all ultimately make this game worth plaything through…
    I Give Mafia 3

Very few have succeeded and Mafia III unfortunately is not the exception. What is more disappointing is that everything Mafia prequels stood for was gone in gameplay and story wise.

    Game Design
This game has a huge, gigantic, enormous problem with the design of the HUD. I mean critical and it gets to the point when you question if they are insulting your intelligence with text in the screen, unnecessary indicator signs (you have a GPU thing in the map why you would put pop up signs in the actual city) the mission objectives are all over the place; it really ruins the immersion that was built with the city. This is basic and mistakes like this shouldn’t happen in a triple A studios. There are no save files so you can play missions that you like (not that there are many enjoyable missions) and if you want to make different choices you must start from scratch.

    Videogames 101
Although there are many technical and gameplay design issues I feel that it has already been said in numerous reviews both from users and specialized sites and are explained with great detail. Instead would like to confront a very serious problem that mafia III has and many heavy narrative driven games have: you are making a game and before start thinking in how you’re going to deliver this awesome story you must realize that the player will spend double of the time playing than watching a cinematic. The most beautiful narratives in this medium are created with the player. What a game designer must do to generate this is simple: guide, linearity, scripted events can’t be seen as a bad thing even if you pretend to create this free roaming city.
What does a Mafia story mean?
Long story short: means painful slow downward spiral where the price is not worth the sacrifice, where the stakes are always at its highest. Mafia III set this perfectly, the elements where there, even the hints of the non-linear structure story teased a great finale. Instead, every opportunity they had to give us a surprise was wasted. Lincoln never faced a challenge, I never felt was something at risk (not in the gameplay not in the story) Hangar13 portray an un-clever, boring and non-threating criminal world that is waiting to be dismantled (the retaliation thing was a good idea with a bad execution). There’s not even a struggle when you’re assigning districts and conflicts can be easily avoided. Betrayal, corruption, crisis, collateral damage where only mentioned but rarely affected the player. Cops where supposed to be a pain in the ass because of the period, and because they are in Marcano’s pocket, you could easily create and element of “resistance to expansion” where the cops could have been in charge of closing business and fighting associate warehouses. I’ve never seen such potential wasted so easily. That’s why I felt cinematics felt so out of phase.

Mafia: The City of Lost Heaven
What made Mafia became a potential franchise? Well practically all the things they erased in mafia III, some may say the story driven immersive cinematic, I would say many games before Mafia I had this signature (MGS, hitman, Final Fantasy) so no, it’s not the resemblance to a Hollywood movie but the details. Some may say useless I may say the soul of a good strong narrative IN GAME. Gun shells bouncing while you’re fighting an ambush, cursing in your seat because you are out of gas in the middle of the street while you need to go to a doctor, running a red light and stop the car cause the persecution is not worth the risk, pick locking a car and wait for the door to open, realizing that the face of the protagonist has a different mood in every mission, shooting a car in the gas tank knowing that it may not explode at all. That is a mafia game and I’m very sad that the franchise has come to this. I’m sure Hangar 13 gave all his love; I felt the effort in every inch. Probably the best character in the game was the city. But I also felt the pressure, the checklist that they needed to fill, the deadlines and the half delivered game.

I thought the reviews of this game were unfair, and really gave this game a chance. What bothers me the most is that the first few missions of this game are actually great. And then it gets AWFUL. In other words, the game sucks you in just enough so that you will make it past the return policy expires, and then you're stuck with an ugly, buggy, extremely boring and frustrating game. First, Im an open world game fanatic, so take my review with a grain of salt. I can and do disappear into these types of games like Tron!

liking this game immensely. Someone compared it to a Tarantino production and I agree. The open world here is a big improvement over Mafia 2 which seemed kinda dead and empty. Progression is tied to your underbosses ie perks, which is interesting.

Progression is tied to your underbosses ie perks, which is interesting. Being an old timer, the world building and the music bring me back to my somewhat muddy memories of childhood which is both a blast and nastalgic.

Driving is very solid with good physics and a plethora of vehicle's to choose from. Word of warning tho, at this moment there is no garage to save vehicles in but there is an underboss who will provide rides of limited types that you can unlock.

Combat is satisfying with a very good cover system but the early game I found a little tough due to ammo limitations. Thankfully I puzzled out the game mechanics very quickly (stealth matters!) and worked out the particulars in the very first combat heavy mission. No worries!

The only gripe I have with the game is some but not all of the accents in the game are groan inducing, with Southern being the worst offender. Luckily I quickly grew inured to it. I hope this is of some help!

Been a fan of the Mafia series and this was a refreshing break from the classic 30s and 40s period to the 60's and early 70s. Story line, Graphics, sound track and game mechanics is top notch and the mission management screen is an excellent imaginative solution for a game rich with multiple missions.

When the game ends, you have nothing to do. In M2, you could do anything, eat at restaurants, mess with the cops (Getting pulled over, tickets, etc), going to wash your car, etc, in Mafia 3, you absolutely do nothing, it's practically over.

Sadly it's not the case here with Mafia 3. The game has taken a steps, but the steps are so minor that it doesn't make the game feel any less different than it's predecessors; maybe even less.

    Pros:
-The World of New Bordeaux is great with live NPC reactions.
    -Gameplay is serviceable
-Characters are very dimensional and liking
    -Story is superb
-Graphics are sometimes good. Lighting plays well in affect in some ways. The motion capture though is superb, making every single character alive and very well acted.
    Cons:
-Mundane missions as you basically do the same stuff over again over the next 20 hours
-Like I said, Graphics are "sometimes" good, but most of the time its very average and buggy. With low textures and buggy unsettling environment, it ruins the experience a lot.
-No Fast travel on a semi big map.
-Driving is very stiff; I know that it's during the late 1960's but Mafia 2 was in the 40's , having better control on their cars, so their no excuse that the cars in Mafia 3 shouldn't drive any better.
-Money really has no use since the favors you get from Mob bosses gives you better weapons. Maybe upgrades but the game isn't necessarily that hard to play.
-Everything feels super half-baked in the content department.
    -No customization for Lincoln Clay.
-Weapons don't really feel any different from one anothe.
-The sky box pisses me off with it being rainy and dark for one moment then just turns bright and sunny out of no where. There's no flow in this game.

This game is really an utter disappointment. I'd wait for at least a price drop for 30 bucks. I feel cheated out.

-Repetitive monotonous tedious redundant mission structure. Damage somebodies rackeets in the so that they come out of hiding and you can off them.
-The "level" design is bland, redudant, and simple. Nearly all the areas you go to do nothing creative. The missions are all the same and 70% of the areas they take place in feel familiar. There are some cool levels but those are exclusively for taking down head honchos.

Conclusion: For the first 4 hours I loved the game but I soon grew tired when it did nothing different and no great mission ever came along.

Especially in that time period, Italian Americans and immigrants experienced a great deal of racism and discrimination themselves. They were not in a position to even enact institutional racism - because, to a certain degree, it applied to them as well.

And yet, here, we see a massive over-simplification and, furthermore, falsification of history. Italians are thrown into the same category as white Anglo Americans, when simply it just was not the case. Largely, they were victims of discrimination as well. This game disregards all of that and points the finger, wrongly, at them as powerful racist discriminators. It's an injustice to a people who were on very much the opposite side of that fence.

Speaking of New Orleans, the largest American lynching took place there. Except it was Italians that were lynched.

To further push this agenda of shoehorning Italians into the institutional discriminator role, we see Anglo faces appearing as stand-ins for Italians. Apparently real Italian faces weren't "white" enough to feel like proper racists. Look at Tony Derazio's face. Couldn't look any LESS Italian. Actor/ model's name: Gibson Frazier. Enzo Conti - modeled after: Matt Gottlieb. Lou Marcano - modeled after: Brad Leland. Olivia Marcano, Erin Matthews. Frank Pagani, Jack Conley. Giorgi Marcano, Mercer Boffey. Leo Galante, Frank Ashmore. Tommy Marcano, Christopher Corey Smith. Like, seriously? Are you kidding me? I could go on an on. What do all these names have in common? They're all Anglo - none even remotely Italian.

You want my opinion? Here it is. Leave games about American cultural history, rife with symbolism to our current social climate, to Americans who actually know about it.

The devs wanted to tell a tale of racism. Excellent. We need to have that discussion. But they chose the wrong context for it. They used an existing franchise that they had lying around to attach their idea to, and needed to use the titular demographic, Italians, for something. So, they demonized them as racists and shoehorned them into their storyline - even though it's damaging and historically inaccurate.

Hangar 13 brings us the next installment of the Mafia franchise with Mafia 3: does this third installment become the Don, or does it get buried with the fishes?
Mafia 3 takes place in 1968 in the southern United States city of New Bordeaux, a re-creation of New Orleans. You play as Lincoln Clay, a bi-racial Vietnam veteran and orphan who never felt like he belonged anywhere. Returning from the war you fall back in with the only family you’ve ever known (the black mob), and find out that your family is in debt to the Italian mob and it has to be repaid. When you pull off a job with the Italians to repay the debt they betray you and leave you for dead. Clay sets out on a revenge mission to take down Sal Marcano, his family, and his empire.
Mafia 3 is an open world third-person shooter that does some things well and others not so much. In Mafia 3 you will recruit three different capos: Cassandra, the leader of the Haitian gang, Vito Scaletta, an exiled member of the Italian Mafia from empire bay, and Burke, leader of the Irish mob who also lost his son because of the Marcanos.
There are a total of ten districts to control and each district has a certain crime syndicate that you must take over; you can destroy their supplies, interrogate the informants, or kill the leaders and enforcers. By the 5th district it becomes a bit tedious as you do the same thing over and over again, and going the extra mile more than you need to just to get more money. Taking over rackets allows you to assign one of your capos to run the racket and will allow a bigger kickback to you. Once an entire district is taken over and the boss is killed, you then have a sit down with your capos and assign one of them to the district which will unlock a new perk for you.
The driving in this game feels smooth, with the muscle cars pulling tight corners with a nice drift. Unfortunately, the cars in the game are not licensed.
Mafia 3 is good, but does not keep you interested for more than 20 hours. The soundtrack is fantastic, filled with classic rock and roll, jazz and country from the 50's and 60's. The unfortunate thing about the game is that it becomes very repetitive with each district, the collectibles are a bit tedious, and the world that was so alive during the time of the 60's seems a bit dull. However, you can’t help but continue to see how the story unfolds as you attempt to collect as much money as possible.
Pros: story, time period, character development, writing, soundtrack
Cons: glitches, mechanics, repetitive, lifeless environment and collectibles.

A lot of things also feel absent. Outfit/vehicle customization did not come standard on day 1. No motorcycles and few boat types. NPCs repeat dialogue far too frequently. I wanted to kill everyone but wanted to make sure I was fair to my lieutenant's. I found towards the end that I wanted to make sure everyone had their own rackets and districts. If you go into this game knowing that it is not GTA V, there is not a lot of side missions, but the missions that their are to do give more to the story.

I wish the collectibles were tied to something, I normally try to find everything in an open world game but it gives nothing to the game. But if you want to read old playboy articles they are there for you.

I wanted to give this game 8 but it was hard to look over the games flaws. This game might bore some people, but if you are into story games this is right for you. If you are looking for endless things to do like in GTA you will get bored quick.

I don't ask for innovation with every release, but this is a huge step down from the previous.
The AI is bad, the stories are all the same, the buildup of any mission is the same, hundreds of graphical bugs and numerous bugs in the very bad UI and HUD.
Though the story is decent, then this game would have been much better off without it and not calling itself MAFIA - it would have suited the game better to just be an open world map that you could just run around in and shoot, drive and kill or whatever in for no particular reason.

I'm giving this game a 5, simply because it's pretty. It has a great soundtrack and the whole feeling of the scenario and the city is fine, apart from that everybody in the city, pedestrians, other people in traffic, shop owners and any NPC you may encounter seem to have lost their brain in a lobotomy operation that was publicly done on everybody from New Orleans back in the 60's apparently. If you were to trust what is going on this game.

It's a real shame, because I can feel where the story is going, the only problem is that every mission has the same build up and it really feels like you are on a giant grinding spree from the very beginning, instead of being an actual story that you playing.

    Sigh.

If you're going to play this game, for your own good, only use the shotguns. GOD THE MISSIONS. it's the same thing over, and over, and over, and over again.

Difficult to play, difficult to endure, and difficult to continue playing in general. If you are genuinely interested in the story, and don't mind repetition, pick it up - otherwise, your money is better spent on a more well-polished game: I'd suggest Uncharted 4, or Grand Theft Auto 5.

But overall, this is an ok game with an amazing cast of characters that has one of the best voice acting and cut scenes this generation has to offer. It elevates the story from a simple revenge quest to a real authentic journey for the protagonist and it's surrounding cast. The graphics in this game and particularly the cut scenes are also among the best this generation has to offer, especially for an open world. Graphics and story-wise, this game is superb (did I mention the voice-acting?). However, the gameplay is nothing to write home about. Missions consists of killing lieutenants and capos of one Mob boss, so then you can kill him. You have to drive to set location, and for the most part kill everyone, and then drive to another location and do the same, over and over again before the game decides you can kill one boss, in order to move to the next boss. Gunplay is your textbook third person shooter and nothing to write home about. The A.I is horrible though, especially in terms of detecting you. Stealth is meh because of it, but is passable. There are a few good things about gameplay though. There are a lot of interesting locations within each mission; For example, I'll be on a cruise ship for one, a firing range for another, a grocery store, etc. The three "major" bosses in this game also all have interesting themes and are all unique and fun. I will also add in the driving in this game is on point, it's tight and responsive; however it's a shame the open world is only there for collectibles. I also enjoyed how you can assign your underbosses districts, and the more districts you assign to them, you can gain the list of perks they have to offer (guns, vehicle mods, etc). To end, this game is a big grind fest, but is passable because of the story and interesting themes and locations set within each mission. If you don't care about story in a game and don't like to grind, avoid this game at all costs. If you don't like to grind but enjoy a good story, rent or watch the cut scenes on youtube or something. To me, I personally liked this game, passable gameplay, but an amazing cast of characters and story made up for it. Expand

Whenever you need to take over a racket, you have to do a bunch of inane **** over and over until you can finally either kill or recruit the racket boss. Now, I consider myself pretty patient when it comes to grind-y gameplay, but it even got to ME. I think the only times I ENJOYED doing those lame side missions where for the Dixie Mob and Southern Union rackets because there was just a sweet kind of irony to it. (and because the Hollow is literally the first district you take over). Now, with that being said, the actual STORY is pretty great and getting revenge on actual lieutenants and capos is satisfying. One or two of them even managed to tug on my heartstrings. I do admit that I missed not being able to customize Lincoln or his cars in any way, though. I think there will be DLC for that, which, thankfully, is free. I also disliked that you could only heal via adrenalin and not get a bite to eat to get it back in between missions or something like it. Or that you could only buy weapons from the back of a fan, although that gets explained. Kind of made all the stores feel kind of redundant. Anyway, I'd get this game for the story, characters and gunplay...but only if you're willing to go to an often annoying grind to get from story point to story point. You should probably wait for a price drop too. Expand

Don't get me wrong the storytelling is the best I've seen in a game since The Last of Us.But in terms of gameplay the game feels poor. After the prologue of the game the mission structure establishes a pattern, you have to do this small preparations missions in order to weaken the "boss" of the district you`re trying to take over, the problem is this preparations missions never change! They're are always like go there and kill the boss' drug dealers, pimps, weapon's smugglers etc.It is so bad that at some point it gets frustrating. When the game finally looks done with this preparations missions,BAM!There they are again and this just makes it less exciting to play.
But it don't matter how boring this missions are, if you manage to get through them it is worth it,every confront with the district's boss is amazing. They take you to the most different and beautiful locations of the game.At one point I was at an abandoned theme park to kill one of the game's "Lieutenants" and after brutally murdering the poor bastard, I got out in a boat driving through the swamps heading to my next mission, and that was remarkable, this moments are certainly one of the game's strongest pros.
The only thing that was able to ruin these moments were the shooting mechanics, they are not the worse I've seen in video games but the team at Hangar 13 didn't make anything to make it special, different, unique.Actually at some point I was frustrated at how bad my control sensitivity was,and even after increasing it I didn't felt much of a difference because the sensitivity wasn't the problem, the mechanic was.The game also have its stealth moments that are okay, they are clearly not impressive with poor change of cover and glitchy takedown animations, but work as the game's AI is really similar to Alien Isolation in which you can stand right beside an enemy and it will still not see you.Even with the gameplay flaws I still managed to have some fun since animations in general are really well done especially the death ones, every shotgun kill or stealth takedown couldn't fill more fulfilling and satisfying than it did.
Another problematic mechanic of the game is the driving, with its Watch Dog style the cars feel completely unrealistic even in the simulation mode, and the pain is prolonged throughout the game since fast travel isn't present in it.As bad as it may sound the lack of a fast travel system actually helped me in exploring some real nice environments in the game but this surely doesn't compensated the frustration of hitting a car every corner in the city areas.
As mentioned before, the game has one of the best storytelling in years, that happens not only because of its deep story and characters but also by the way they tell it.They make use of a documentary style of narrative combined with real and made footage of 60's events. The game also includes elements present at the time like racism, sexism and even Ku Klux Klan since at some point of the game you have to kill a man involved with them. This all makes that even with the cliche revenge plot the game manages to make you care about the characters and feeling curious about Lincoln Clay's revenge plan.
Even occurring less frequently to me the game is full of glitches and sometimes they really ruin the experience.NPCs going through walls and objects, enemies spotting you through walls, these are the least of your problems since the story missions are broken with objective markers pointing to the wrong place and mission NPCs behaving the wrong way.I had this mission that a NPC should escort me to the locker room inside a gym, but the door to the hallway that led to it just didn't open because the NPC that were supposed to follow me just couldn't go through a previous door.I had to restart the mission two or three times before it finally worked and got so angry that i stopped playing for about two hours.
Mafia III is a game that checks all the requirements for a 3rd person shooter Sandbox, but doesn't try to differ from its competitors, actually with all its glitches, repetitiveness and poor gameplay mechanics it lowers the level we are used to,but if you can get past this problems you'll find a compelling, deep and very well told story to be completely unfolded in about 25 hours. As I said before i couldn't be more happy to go hype free to this game, because I'm sure that if I didn't I'd probably have left the game with a feeling of deception and disillusion, but as of right now all I feel about this game is respect and I'll be sure to come back to play its DLC content once it's out.

This game is not worthy the Mafia heritage. Not because the main protagonist is black and not sicilian - but because the game itself share's more simliarities with games such as Watch Dogs and Saint's Row than Mafia. Truth is, even GTA V closer to the Mafia formula than MAFIA III.

    Why?

First off, the formula is 30% Mafia and the rest 70% of the formula is copied- and pasted DIRECTLY from the typical, generic gameplay, themes, features, style and mechanics you see in all other games. You can use xrayvision and see enemies through walls by pressing a button (they glow read) which is copied from Batman. The ''brutal takedown'' are directly copied from Hitman including many HUD-elements such as ''Trespassing'' appearing on the screen when you enter restricted areas. Weapons on the ground has glowing icons over them. The game even borrow ''one punch, one kill'' from GTA V; punch a person one time and the fall down dead. It is directly copied - and there is too much of it. The screen feels littered with HUD elements.

Secondly, the game is dumbed-down. Xrayvision might fit in Batman, but certainly not in a mature (at least supposed to be mature) gangster game such as Mafia. Neither does the devs love for Hollywood explosions fit into the game; no it does not make sense that a car explodes just because you put a few bullets into it. A part from the fact that the game is dumbed down in terms of aids for the player, the AI is dumbed down as well. AI is dumb as rock; they are more or less deaf, blind and lacks shooting accuracy. Shootouts becomes a shooting gallery.

Third, in terms of story, Lincoln Clay is a black Vietnam-vet with superhuman abilities. Lincoln Clay is a lone-wolf, one-man army. The whole gameplay evolves very much around a vietnam vet literally going RAMBO and takes down whole crime syndicates on his own. The storytelling is good though - and cutscenes is what makes it worthwhile playing at all. But then there is just repetetive missions that has very little to offer. Typical gameplay is running to cover - mow down enemies - and maybe sprint towards them in full speed to use a quick stealth-takedown aided by a bombastic sound effect to it. Or jump out of a speeding car watching it crash into the bad guys and then and exlode.

Fourth, In terms of graphics, the game is nothing special. There is as a matter of fact many issues. The skybox is horrible, there is pop-ups, low resolution textures, and the screen game is drenched in a orange-tint. Graphics is generally not a big deal - gameplay is what i consider most important. But Mafia III got does nothing of it right.

Final verdict: Mafia III is not a special game. It is certainly not worthy the Mafia heritage.

i should admit that mafia 2 was better than mafia 3 in every aspect(my score to II is 10/10) but mafia 3 isn't that bad a lot people are claiming it is. it has a very good story (not as good as mafia 2 but better than GTA V)
good gameplay, and good musics but the missions are a little repetitive and graphics isn't good enough for a mafia game.
i think this game could be the best game

i think this game could be the best game ever if they made it like mafia 2 but add some side missions and activities to do in the city (like racing, fighting, mini games, etc)

    verdict:
    + excellent story and characters
    + good musics
    + good car driving
    + nice city design

    - repetitive missions
    - bugs, bugs everywhere
    - a huge step back from mafia 2
    - no realism like mafia 1 and 2, no car customisation, no cloth store,no barbershop, no motorcycles

*IF YOU HAVE PLAYED MAFIA 2, I SUGGEST YOU PLAY MAFIA 3 TOO IT'S NOT BAD.

ok this game certainly does not deserve a 0 or 10, I am enjoying it so far, interesting plot and cool sound track, can gamers not review games intelligently anymore? Uncharted, Metal gear Solid all had incredibly repetitive missions and these are currently rated the top two Ps4 games on this site

Well I did give this a 10 3 days ago because I didn't see a lot of things of it until I played a bit more you see the thing is I did notice the cloud wasn't as textured in fact it just reminds me of Legend of Zelda on the n64 graphics back then I mean the graphics are good and the cut-scenes are good but there are some stuff I started to notice now on my last review I didn't get to play itWell I did give this a 10 3 days ago because I didn't see a lot of things of it until I played a bit more you see the thing is I did notice the cloud wasn't as textured in fact it just reminds me of Legend of Zelda on the n64 graphics back then I mean the graphics are good and the cut-scenes are good but there are some stuff I started to notice now on my last review I didn't get to play it a lot but when I had a lot of more time then usual I start noticing it did have some stuff wrong which this game was one other thing I did notice you can't customize your cars or even buy any new cars I still give it at least an 7 because it doesn't derserve a zero but the other thing I notice is you keep doing some of the side missions over and over again which is another of Mafia's downfall there's not a lot of stuff to buy aside from weapons and upgrades maybe if they added where you can buy cars it would be better but I wasn't big on the clothes customizing ill be honest but it does kinda get tiring looking at the same clothes most of the time. Hopefully if they choose to add another Mafia they should at least have Vito as the playable character again. Expand

Mafia 3 is a solid game but I can agree that its potential has not been met, the game could use another few months in development in order to polish a few things.

+ The game realistically presents the climate of 1960's USA like few others + Great music + The story and characters are very well done + As opposed to what many people believe the driving is actually quite good, especially

+ The game realistically presents the climate of 1960's USA like few others
    + Great music
+ The story and characters are very well done
+ As opposed to what many people believe the driving is actually quite good, especially if you pick the "simulation" option
+ Combat is exciting and dynamic
+/- The graphics are not amazing but also not that bad as what most people are saying
    - The side missions are very repetitive, you will end up doing the same thing many times, however if you have an imagination it gives you the possibility of approaching the same type of mission (although most have interesting different back stories) in a different way, it is all up to you! You can use stealth and take out everyone with a knife, you can go in guns blazing and due to the good cover system the action is very dynamic, you can take out the opponents with a sniper, blow them up etc. if you have a good imagination you really can make the experience of side missions fun!
    - There are a few bugs now and then but nothing of a deal breaker so far (played around 15h already)
    - The open world does not feel that "alive", do not expect it to feel as realistic as in GTA
    - No option to own houses/change clothes
    - Lightning effects are not good

To sum up, I believe Mafia 3 is a good game but has not met its potential. It is worth the money, however don't go out expecting too much from it, whether you enjoy the game really depends on the way you play it, use your imagination (differentiate taking out the targets/fulfilling the objectives using stealth, from a distance and guns blazing etc. and the repetitiveness really does not become such an issue then). The amazing music, great story, great voice acting and atmosphere make it a positive experience.

it kinda looked like gta San Andreas.
It was very buggy and the lag was making the game even worse.
They should have called it Bugia lll.
The graphics weren't that bad but personally aside from the bugs and stuff I enjoyed the first hours.

Love the combat and the atmosphere of the game. Mission structure isn't varied, but to me the combat is so fun I don't mind. Very fun game with incredible story and cutscenes

For example you are hiding in cover and there are two guards talking around the corner you can whistle and only one will come. You kill him right in front of the other one, his friend won't give two **** about him and start a normal patrol.Overall the game is good. Gives you the feel of creating your own criminal empire. Reminds you of Narcos sometimes. Expand

As a fan of the series all I can say is don't waste you're money on this garbage game because if you're expecting a Mafia game (and who wouldn't be) you will be very disappointed.

This game has issues no doubt. Let me tell you about my experiences. After the first 3 hours I was ready to give this a 9/10. But, I kept going and boy am I glad I did. This game is inconsistent in every aspect except 2. Those being some of the best writing and acting in a video game ever and the soundtrack. They can't be faulted.
The graphics and little gameplay bugs are what stops this being a 10.
This game rewards time and effort, with the story building and building and the range of emotions that you will go through are incredible. I haven't experienced another game like this since the last of us.
I don't understand all the haters. It seems to me a lot of the really low reviews are fake or the people have only played 1/3 of the game.
So if your a true gamer, you can forgive some of the small issues with the game and your after something that will give you a range of emotions unparalleled in gaming today. Then get this, buckle up and enjoy the ride of Lincoln clay.
If your after a gtav clone. Give this a miss.

A real disappointment for me. I buy just about every "living world" game that comes out. And either I was wrong to think that this was part of that genre, or the marketing was wrong.

Yes, it takes place in a city. And yes, there are pedestrians and cars out there.

But the hallmark of the living world genre is that you aren't *required* to go from mission to mission. Rather, there are always fun minigames and diversions for you to do in addition to the main missions. Franchises like GTA and Assassin's Creed really exemplify this.

In the 5 hours I played this game, I don't think I encountered any of these "pick up" games. It was all main mission.

Even worse, the main missions weren't even fun. The last one I played involved me picking up cargo dropped in a river. The bad part was that there was no game there at all - just moving the boat over the cargo and pressing "square". No one tried to stop me, no time limit, nothing - I could have been rearranging icons on my desktop.

I give the game 2 stars because the graphics are nice.

Complete embarrassment. Everything about this game is at least 8 years out of date. It's like playing a bad Saints Row 2 clone from 2009. Looks, runs, plays like ****

Its stealth is too repetitive, its gunfights too familiar, and its driving too boring to support anything else that’s going on. Despite how clever it manages to be in portraying the conquest and control of a criminal enterprise, the nuts-and-bolts missions feel like busywork, and it never fully explores the most interesting aspects of its setting. It’s better than Mafia II, but that’s damning it with faint praise.

This is a game whose best moments are diluted by a torrent of filler, whose beauty is obscured by its technical shortcomings, and whose obvious potential is squandered by a lack of polish. That weird orange sky is, alas, the least of its problems. [Christmas 2016, p.110]

It could have been a really great sandbox for one evening. It’s a shame the developers decided to extend it by over a dozen completely redundant hours, because they had fresh ideas for around one fifth of the campaign and made the rest of the game repetitive as hell. [12/2016, p.48]
