But overall, this is an ok game with an amazing cast of characters that has one of the best voice acting and cut scenes this generation has to offer. It elevates the story from a simple revenge quest to a real authentic journey for the protagonist and it's surrounding cast. The graphics in this game and particularly the cut scenes are also among the best this generation has to offer, especially for an open world. Graphics and story-wise, this game is superb (did I mention the voice-acting?). However, the gameplay is nothing to write home about. Missions consists of killing lieutenants and capos of one Mob boss, so then you can kill him. You have to drive to set location, and for the most part kill everyone, and then drive to another location and do the same, over and over again before the game decides you can kill one boss, in order to move to the next boss. Gunplay is your textbook third person shooter and nothing to write home about. The A.I is horrible though, especially in terms of detecting you. Stealth is meh because of it, but is passable. There are a few good things about gameplay though. There are a lot of interesting locations within each mission; For example, I'll be on a cruise ship for one, a firing range for another, a grocery store, etc. The three "major" bosses in this game also all have interesting themes and are all unique and fun. I will also add in the driving in this game is on point, it's tight and responsive; however it's a shame the open world is only there for collectibles. I also enjoyed how you can assign your underbosses districts, and the more districts you assign to them, you can gain the list of perks they have to offer (guns, vehicle mods, etc). To end, this game is a big grind fest, but is passable because of the story and interesting themes and locations set within each mission. If you don't care about story in a game and don't like to grind, avoid this game at all costs. If you don't like to grind but enjoy a good story, rent or watch the cut scenes on youtube or something. To me, I personally liked this game, passable gameplay, but an amazing cast of characters and story made up for it. Expand

The first hour of the game is good, the game introduces you to the story (which is good) but then when you're supposed to take over the city, the game starts to become horribly repetitive. The story isn't bad, but the fact that the game is so repetitive makes me feel that the "take over the city" thing is just to make the game longer. I was really hyped for this game after Mafia 2 but unfortunately this game isn't as good as its old brother.

To begin with: wait with the buy. I finished the game in a 3 day marathon, so it isnt the worst, but: there where SO MANY Bugs and chrashes. There are so many things that destroy the gameplay. Police is joke, AI almost non existent, the city feels dead, the car flips over nothing because the streets arent connected correctly.

The worst: You do the same thing 9 times in a row till the game ends. Talk to a contact, do 4-6 missions for him, kill the boss, kill his boss, next.

The whole gameplay works way too slow, if an enemy appears behind you, it takes you 3 seconds to turn around (at least) and shoot him, which means you're dead when you play on hard, which you should because 'hard' equals 'medium' in comparable games.

This beeing said, it still is fun. It has times, especially in the beginning, when the presentation is just really amazing. It feels right. If you get used to Lincoln hes an amazing character. But after the first 2 hours this drops too and you hate the game for having unskippable cut scenes. The Driving is good, the sneaking is fun, the shooting works great (long distance headshots with a silenced pistol are satisfying) and the urge to shoot Marcano in the face keep you going.

Sadly, if you compare this game to GTA 5, which you should, because they have A LOT of similarities, it loses in almost every aspect. This doenst mean its a bad game, but if you played GTA 5 you get annoyed by a lot of things that where just a lot better.

Overall I would give it a 3, but the fact i kept going till the end makes me think im too hard on this game so i end up with a 5.

I don't ask for innovation with every release, but this is a huge step down from the previous.
The AI is bad, the stories are all the same, the buildup of any mission is the same, hundreds of graphical bugs and numerous bugs in the very bad UI and HUD.
Though the story is decent, then this game would have been much better off without it and not calling itself MAFIA - it would have suited the game better to just be an open world map that you could just run around in and shoot, drive and kill or whatever in for no particular reason.

I'm giving this game a 5, simply because it's pretty. It has a great soundtrack and the whole feeling of the scenario and the city is fine, apart from that everybody in the city, pedestrians, other people in traffic, shop owners and any NPC you may encounter seem to have lost their brain in a lobotomy operation that was publicly done on everybody from New Orleans back in the 60's apparently. If you were to trust what is going on this game.

It's a real shame, because I can feel where the story is going, the only problem is that every mission has the same build up and it really feels like you are on a giant grinding spree from the very beginning, instead of being an actual story that you playing.

    Sigh.

However, this game lucks some major points that can make it to be at least on pair with the games’ industry epitome of success GTA 5.

The driving experience is horrendous. I don’t know what they had in mind but it seems extremely arcadie and targeted for amateur gamers or children, (however anyone can argue that cannot be a child’s game as It is gory and racist). Thus, why there is such bad driving style even on the so called simulation experience?
My second statement is that the graphics on PS4 can be on times either splendid or dreadful. This can’t be happening on AAA titles I believe.

Either way I was waiting like crazy this game after I saw the demo in E3, and I state that 2k did a terrible work, keeping in mind that budget given seems to be huge. This can be perceived by looking at copyrighted songs and advertising it got, making it an extremely hyped game.
I am starting to believe that any publisher passing delayed AAA copies to the critics, it tends to have either technical issues or severe bugs.

When this came to ps plus it sat there in my collection, started playing recently and couldn't put it down. This is a great quality title but be warned there are still some game breaking glitches - I experienced 'freezing' on a cutscenes video multiple times, towards the end of the game the day night cycle glitched and was perpetual night only not to mention numerous times the ai got stuck somewhere prevention progression in a mission.

Despite this it is full of charm and has some of the best visuals I've seen in a game of this type. Definitely worth your time if you're a fan of the gangster genre and open world gaming. I will advise though -just b line the story mode only the side quests are repeptitous and dialogue only no high quality cut scebes. To be found there.

It was so heartbreaking, because the story was actually quite good. A note for developers: do not rush production, and take your time polishing your game.

There's some good stuff about this game, but the people giving this and 8, 9, or even 10 are being insane.

The hand-to-hand stuff is pretty trash and not robust at all. I remember them talking this game up before it was released and pretending it had this deep, brutal melee system. It doesn't. At all. There are a few cool kill animations in specific scenarios during hand-to-hand combat, but that's about it.

I like the world visually. It has some decent variety to it, and especially early on is a pretty fun place to be. But this game has the least "alive" world I have ever seen in an open-world game. It's actually kind of shocking. There is quite literally nothing to do in this game outside of missions. And the missions are essentially the same 4 things over and over again. Go here, kill a bunch of goons, and then kill the 'boss' of that area. Go here, collect a car/truck, bring it back. There's also some stealth in this game, and the stealth systems such.

Back to the completely dead world, Mafia II had this same problem. But at least that game looked lived in. This world feels bland and boring after you play for 4+ hours. Also, in Mafia II there was some decent mission variety that helped hide the fact the game didn't have the most lively world ever. Mission variety does not exist in Mafia III, at least in the base game.

The base game is pretty rough, but there is some DLC to this game I enjoyed a decent bit. The sky is ugly as hell, and some of the mechanics in previous Mafia games have been removed here. Speeding no longer matters, so there's no toggle to make it so your max speed is the speed limit. Gas in cars no longer matters, the mechanic doesn't exist. Trying to bribe cops is no longer a thing. I'd actually argue non-aggressive cops barely exist in this game. Whereas in previous Mafia games there were 'levels' of aggression the police would come at you with. Not here.

I'm gonna give it a 5, but even then this is me being generous. Overall I do believe there's a really solid story in this game. Somewhere.

Story is a journey of a veteran to became a criminal, after ever cut scene there is a secondary cut scene in which people are babbling about or discussing the protagonist heroics fortunately you can skip it as they can bore you to death. Game play is repetitive; just go to one place and kill some bad dudes and then to an other followed by cut scene and repeat allover again And Side quests are all fetch which don't matter at all.

Mafia 3 is one of the buggiest game i have played, enemies disappear and reappear during gun battle, in some fetch quests the vehicle you are driving will suddenly disappear and you will be standing on the road looking like an ass, Missions will not appear unless you completely quit the game and then restart it, game can also go into bullet mode (very slow) as i experienced it some where close to the end of the game. You can get stuck inside the building and door's wont open etc.

There are also some dumb things like if you hit a bush with a car it is like hitting a wall, if vehicle flip over press exit and character will magically appear out side the car, amount of ammo you can carry is pathetic, stamina level is even more pathetic & Every thing is further spiked up with Miserable lighting effects.

And the Ending is even more messed up.

I'd rate it above average because the story is great, the actors are fantastic and the soundtrack is brilliant. Unfortunately the sheer amount of bugs, graphical issues and gameplay issues really hold this title back. Firstly, you'll notice that the facial animations are stunning but as soon as you look at the rest of the world you'll quickly realise it's a total mix of high quality and low quality. The rain and weather effects are generally beautiful but then you'll suddenly see a super low res texture or very noticeable pop-up, or perhaps your characters limbs poking through something they shouldn't be able to pass through. This mixed bag of quality is prevalent throughout the entire game. For instance, while the soundtrack is amazing you'll very quickly be hearing a lot of the same music over and over because there are only 3 radio stations and the content isn't huge. There's a very large open world map with some fairly pretty vistas and towns, but unfortunately there's very little to do other than the story missions which is quite disappointing. It almost seems as if they game is trying to deter you from exploring, and perhaps it is, because lo and behold almost as soon as I decided to roam around, ignoring the missions, and undertaking whatever destruction and fun took my fancy a whole plethora of issues became apparent; NPCs reacting strangely or spouting incorrect responses to what you're doing, getting stuck on a curb because for some reason my character decided he can't climb a 2 inch step anymore, weather cycling too rapidly and then even sometimes key mission triggers not working (I spent about 10 minutes at one point just trying to make a mission start icon actually start the mission). These faults clearly indicate that the game wasn't ready for release, so why they decided to shove it out there I can't imagine. You can't release a AAA game with such glaring issues. I'm not going to return the game, I'll finish it off and get enjoyment out of it for sure, but it's a shame that what could have actually been an absolutely stellar and unique open world adventure is actually just an average game. The feel of the driving mechanics is fine but if you want to have fun driving around the map doing crazy things... well, you won't. Because nothing is designed for casual fun or exploration. The shooting mechanics are functional, but not quite as smooth as they should be. The death animations though are absolutely brilliant, sometimes enemies drop to the ground and writhe around in agony for extended periods of time, begging for help. But for every time something impresses you, two more glitches or shortcomings will rear their head. After watching one enemy react to being hit in the back from a distance, cowering in pain and shock, I then watched him run away and continue fighting as if he hadn't been injured. So the game wows you with something pretty cool but then pulls the rug out from under itself basically showing you a lack of depth in the detail and a lack of cohesion. What's the point in having a bunch of cool little things if the world that contains them doesn't come together properly? This is Mafia III's main issue. There are great little things about it but the overall game hasn't been put together properly; it lacks the polish of a game like GTA V or Red Dead Redemption. It's even more problematic than something like Sleeping Dogs. If you play it, play it for the story, there's nothing else here to write home about, but luckily the story is engrossing enough that many people will choose to ignore the game's faults and push through. Very few have succeeded and Mafia III unfortunately is not the exception. What is more disappointing is that everything Mafia prequels stood for was gone in gameplay and story wise.

    Game Design
This game has a huge, gigantic, enormous problem with the design of the HUD. I mean critical and it gets to the point when you question if they are insulting your intelligence with text in the screen, unnecessary indicator signs (you have a GPU thing in the map why you would put pop up signs in the actual city) the mission objectives are all over the place; it really ruins the immersion that was built with the city. This is basic and mistakes like this shouldn’t happen in a triple A studios. There are no save files so you can play missions that you like (not that there are many enjoyable missions) and if you want to make different choices you must start from scratch.

    Videogames 101
Although there are many technical and gameplay design issues I feel that it has already been said in numerous reviews both from users and specialized sites and are explained with great detail. Instead would like to confront a very serious problem that mafia III has and many heavy narrative driven games have: you are making a game and before start thinking in how you’re going to deliver this awesome story you must realize that the player will spend double of the time playing than watching a cinematic. The most beautiful narratives in this medium are created with the player. What a game designer must do to generate this is simple: guide, linearity, scripted events can’t be seen as a bad thing even if you pretend to create this free roaming city.
What does a Mafia story mean?
Long story short: means painful slow downward spiral where the price is not worth the sacrifice, where the stakes are always at its highest. Mafia III set this perfectly, the elements where there, even the hints of the non-linear structure story teased a great finale. Instead, every opportunity they had to give us a surprise was wasted. Lincoln never faced a challenge, I never felt was something at risk (not in the gameplay not in the story) Hangar13 portray an un-clever, boring and non-threating criminal world that is waiting to be dismantled (the retaliation thing was a good idea with a bad execution). There’s not even a struggle when you’re assigning districts and conflicts can be easily avoided. Betrayal, corruption, crisis, collateral damage where only mentioned but rarely affected the player. Cops where supposed to be a pain in the ass because of the period, and because they are in Marcano’s pocket, you could easily create and element of “resistance to expansion” where the cops could have been in charge of closing business and fighting associate warehouses. I’ve never seen such potential wasted so easily. That’s why I felt cinematics felt so out of phase.

Mafia: The City of Lost Heaven
What made Mafia became a potential franchise? Well practically all the things they erased in mafia III, some may say the story driven immersive cinematic, I would say many games before Mafia I had this signature (MGS, hitman, Final Fantasy) so no, it’s not the resemblance to a Hollywood movie but the details. Some may say useless I may say the soul of a good strong narrative IN GAME. Gun shells bouncing while you’re fighting an ambush, cursing in your seat because you are out of gas in the middle of the street while you need to go to a doctor, running a red light and stop the car cause the persecution is not worth the risk, pick locking a car and wait for the door to open, realizing that the face of the protagonist has a different mood in every mission, shooting a car in the gas tank knowing that it may not explode at all. That is a mafia game and I’m very sad that the franchise has come to this. I’m sure Hangar 13 gave all his love; I felt the effort in every inch. Probably the best character in the game was the city. But I also felt the pressure, the checklist that they needed to fill, the deadlines and the half delivered game.

Pros: Story, setting, game play. The city itself looks pretty good and is detailed, great collectibles!

Cons: Repetitive missions, bad graphics on some stuff, especially the reflections on the cars, poor textures on a lot of the NPCs.

Definitely not a bad game to sit down and kill some time with, but also not a great one. Another 6 months in development and some additional creativity on missions could have really helped this game.

The acting is amazing. I wanted to complete each and every story mission just to see the performance of each of the cast members. Some you loved and wanted to see more of and others you couldn't wait to kill. A+ for the cast

The story was also a great ride. Far from just a generic revenge tale, you really wanted to see what was going to happen next, and the flash back/forwards in the cut scene worked well for the most part.

The setting is by far the star of the show though. Being set in the Deep South in 1968 was a very bold move. They pulled no punches with the racism of the time. Playing as a 1/2 black character you get to see this first hand from the way cops would show up instantly in a predominantly white neighborhood vs. maybe not even showing up at all in the poorer districts to not being allowed in to some business/restaurants due to the color of your skin.

Overall the game needs a lot of work, you can tell this game was pushed out way too early, it could have been so much better. That said, I would recommend it to anyone who enjoys open world GTA style games.

I bought Mafia 3 day one and don't regret my purchase what-so-ever. The 1960's setting is super interesting to me, not only because of the veitnam war, or the racial tension but because my father who I have a great deal of respect for is a Vietnam vet and pretty much grew up in Louisiana. So you could say I am a little biased. The gameplay is there, as well as plenty of content. Yes, it can get a bit repetitive if you play for several hours at a time, but given that is is a Mob/Mafia revenge game it is going to entail a lot of killing mob/mafia members and that is exactly what you do A LOT. The voice acting is some of the strongest I have ever heard in a video game, and certainly adds to the immersion. The cars handle a bit more arcady than I would like. Hanger 13 has stated, and I am paraphrasing here that "they wanted the driving to be a bit more arcady so that EVERYONE would be able to drive efficiently." I feel they dropped the ball on this. If they were looking to make things easier for more casual gamers that is totally cool, but maybe add it as an option to have a more realistic driving experience. Cars back then were extremely heavy and as big as boats so it completely takes me out of the experience when I am hugging corners at 100 mph in something the size of a small yacht. I did however love the "Louisiana Bayou" setting. It looks extremely accurate to the time, and when I say accurate of the time I just mean the over all feel of the Bayou. That kind of mystic/supernatural feeling. Hangar 13 did an incredible job making New Bordeau (The name of the city in Mafia 3) feel like as big a character as the main one Lincoln Clay. I completely enjoyed my time with Mafia 3 and I am starting again to see how other options play out (you will know what I mean if you play it, I dont want to give too much away). I would suggest going into the game reminding yourself that this is a new studio's (Hangar 13) first game ever. Yes, some of the developers that worked on previous Mafia titles did work on mafia 3 but it's safe to say they were extremely outnumbered. Also, try not to compare it to GTA 5. Of coarse GTA 5 looks and feels a lot better, but they have also had a little over 5 chances at fine tuning, and building on their franchise, whereas again this is hangar 13's first title as a studio. I should say that I have experienced 3 or 4 crashes on ps4 and some minor pop-ins but other than that I haven't noticed anything extreme though, I am no computer tech so someone with a trained eye might notice more. Don't get me wrong the storytelling is the best I've seen in a game since The Last of Us.But in terms of gameplay the game feels poor. After the prologue of the game the mission structure establishes a pattern, you have to do this small preparations missions in order to weaken the "boss" of the district you`re trying to take over, the problem is this preparations missions never change! They're are always like go there and kill the boss' drug dealers, pimps, weapon's smugglers etc.It is so bad that at some point it gets frustrating. When the game finally looks done with this preparations missions,BAM!There they are again and this just makes it less exciting to play.
But it don't matter how boring this missions are, if you manage to get through them it is worth it,every confront with the district's boss is amazing. They take you to the most different and beautiful locations of the game.At one point I was at an abandoned theme park to kill one of the game's "Lieutenants" and after brutally murdering the poor bastard, I got out in a boat driving through the swamps heading to my next mission, and that was remarkable, this moments are certainly one of the game's strongest pros.
The only thing that was able to ruin these moments were the shooting mechanics, they are not the worse I've seen in video games but the team at Hangar 13 didn't make anything to make it special, different, unique.Actually at some point I was frustrated at how bad my control sensitivity was,and even after increasing it I didn't felt much of a difference because the sensitivity wasn't the problem, the mechanic was.The game also have its stealth moments that are okay, they are clearly not impressive with poor change of cover and glitchy takedown animations, but work as the game's AI is really similar to Alien Isolation in which you can stand right beside an enemy and it will still not see you.Even with the gameplay flaws I still managed to have some fun since animations in general are really well done especially the death ones, every shotgun kill or stealth takedown couldn't fill more fulfilling and satisfying than it did.
Another problematic mechanic of the game is the driving, with its Watch Dog style the cars feel completely unrealistic even in the simulation mode, and the pain is prolonged throughout the game since fast travel isn't present in it.As bad as it may sound the lack of a fast travel system actually helped me in exploring some real nice environments in the game but this surely doesn't compensated the frustration of hitting a car every corner in the city areas.
As mentioned before, the game has one of the best storytelling in years, that happens not only because of its deep story and characters but also by the way they tell it.They make use of a documentary style of narrative combined with real and made footage of 60's events. The game also includes elements present at the time like racism, sexism and even Ku Klux Klan since at some point of the game you have to kill a man involved with them. This all makes that even with the cliche revenge plot the game manages to make you care about the characters and feeling curious about Lincoln Clay's revenge plan.
Even occurring less frequently to me the game is full of glitches and sometimes they really ruin the experience.NPCs going through walls and objects, enemies spotting you through walls, these are the least of your problems since the story missions are broken with objective markers pointing to the wrong place and mission NPCs behaving the wrong way.I had this mission that a NPC should escort me to the locker room inside a gym, but the door to the hallway that led to it just didn't open because the NPC that were supposed to follow me just couldn't go through a previous door.I had to restart the mission two or three times before it finally worked and got so angry that i stopped playing for about two hours.
Mafia III is a game that checks all the requirements for a 3rd person shooter Sandbox, but doesn't try to differ from its competitors, actually with all its glitches, repetitiveness and poor gameplay mechanics it lowers the level we are used to,but if you can get past this problems you'll find a compelling, deep and very well told story to be completely unfolded in about 25 hours. As I said before i couldn't be more happy to go hype free to this game, because I'm sure that if I didn't I'd probably have left the game with a feeling of deception and disillusion, but as of right now all I feel about this game is respect and I'll be sure to come back to play its DLC content once it's out.

Next is the combat. Oh boy, how I like the combat system in this one, AI reacts to where you shoot them, they even have dialogs like "He's reloading, kill him." which is nice and they act very human-like.

Now we move to the driving. It's not that great, however, when you set it on simulation, it's quite enjoyable, at least for me.

The last thing before I'll say my final verdict, is the graphics... I don't quite understand where all the hate comes from, I can't say anything bad about the graphics, it just looks right, even though there are still some graphical glitches present such as bad lightning when day time and rain or shadows looking very weird, but I hope, they will fix that soon, still it must be said, they should've repaired it before release.

    UPDATE:

After finishing the game I found myself confused, what to think of this entry to the series. First of all, the story is top notch all the way to the end, that didn't change, however to get to the main story missions you have to do these repetitive racket bullcraps where you just start to think you won't be able to finish the game and that's the main problem of this game. I can't believe how someone could make these great and memorable main story missions where you go and kill the sidekicks and underbosses of Sal Marcano and right next to it these shallow, boring and repetitive racket "missions" and to top it all of, just implement them as "main story missions". I just lost it there. So, because of this, I have to lower my initial score and I'm very sorry to do that, because the main story is soo great. 6.8/10

The story in Mafia 3 is very well written, the characters are well played; and the soundtrack is impressive, not only using very popular and memorable tunes, but also some obscure songs that really set the tone in certain scenes.

The shooting mechanics are standard (nothing special), and the same goes for the cover system, which are definitely not broken. I played on hard with no aim assist, and the shooting/cover gameplay was pretty good throughout, nothing that glaringly bad or awkward to complain about, and nothing that great or unique to give high praise.

The driving (on land) is a bit heavy and can feel awkward especially in the beginning of the game, but once I set the driving option to "simulation" in the pause menu, and changed the camera view to inside of the car overlooking the hood, I got accustom to it pretty quickly and didn't have many problems there on out. Boats are a different story. They tend to be too loose when turning, and too much damage can happen way to easily. Driving in boats is a big "meh".

There is a lot to do in the game besides the main story. I enjoy collecting old Playboy and Hotrod magazines from the 60's, and that level of novelty is a perfect addition to help you stray from the monotony of busting up rackets/hideouts when you're not playing the main story.

This game is glitchy. and I'm sure that you've read this already (and rightfully so) because again, THIS GAME IS GLITCHY!

I've had my game crash about five to ten times while playing it, but I never lost any real progress because of the autosaving. I can see it being frustrating if you're right in the middle of a long story mission with no autosave, and then you crash and you have to start over. There are also graphical glitches in the game. Sometimes when changing from gameplay to cutscene and back to gameplay, you'll notice that the lighting on the characters can get very bright and stay like that for a minute or two. I've seen cars spin out randomly, people walk on the air, and other minor glitches that you wouldn't see in a polished game.

If you're on the fence about getting this game because of the glitches, wait another month or so, and hopefully a patch or two will address these issues. Glitches like these usually get fixed, and I would say in this games case there is a high probability that they will be fixed because it's a game by a big company in 2K.

Overall Mafia 3 was a fun game with a great story, mediocre shooting/driving, and a glitchy/buggy experience throughout (even though I would say that the glitches/bugs are not game-breaking).

If the game doesn't ever get patched to fix the glitches/bugs then I would give this game a 5/10

If the bugs were addressed, and I didn't have to take them into consideration because they're not effecting gameplay, then I would give this game a 7.5/10

as for right now with the way the full game is I'll give it a 6.5/10 (rounding up to 7/10 using metacritic ratings)

The combat is phenomenal and it feels satisfying to squeeze the trigger on your dualshock, sending buckshot pellets into the chest of your enemies. If you're going to play this game, for your own good, only use the shotguns. I also enjoy the fact that it makes you seem like you're a huge recognized figure, as shown with it's documentary story-telling. Overall, it's okay.

    + Great music
+ The story and characters are very well done
+ As opposed to what many people believe the driving is actually quite good, especially if you pick the "simulation" option
+ Combat is exciting and dynamic
+/- The graphics are not amazing but also not that bad as what most people are saying
    - The side missions are very repetitive, you will end up doing the same thing many times, however if you have an imagination it gives you the possibility of approaching the same type of mission (although most have interesting different back stories) in a different way, it is all up to you! You can use stealth and take out everyone with a knife, you can go in guns blazing and due to the good cover system the action is very dynamic, you can take out the opponents with a sniper, blow them up etc. if you have a good imagination you really can make the experience of side missions fun!
    - There are a few bugs now and then but nothing of a deal breaker so far (played around 15h already)
    - The open world does not feel that "alive", do not expect it to feel as realistic as in GTA
    - No option to own houses/change clothes
    - Lightning effects are not good

To sum up, I believe Mafia 3 is a good game but has not met its potential. It is worth the money, however don't go out expecting too much from it, whether you enjoy the game really depends on the way you play it, use your imagination (differentiate taking out the targets/fulfilling the objectives using stealth, from a distance and guns blazing etc. and the repetitiveness really does not become such an issue then). The amazing music, great story, great voice acting and atmosphere make it a positive experience.

I've been playing on consoles for over three years (hey, I was strictly a PC gamer before that.) and I have never had so much trouble in keeping the camera in the middle of the screen. You turn the stick left and the camera goes up, you push the stick up - the camera goes down. Really hard to manuever. I've tried changing the settings but doesn't seem to help much. Camera also turns really slow so when guys are sneaking up behind you it's hard to turn and get a bead on them. Have not experienced any bugs yet. Otherwise, I really bought the game for the New Orleans setting which is fantastic. I've never played a Grand Theft Auto game but have played Mafia 1 and 2 on PC so I can't compare it to GTV. I don't think the graphics are that bad, the voice acting is great and the music is fantastic. I grew up in the 60's and 70's and it's spot on. Can't comment on the story because I haven't got that far into it yet. My main complaint is the controls! Also, the print is very small on the screen so you can't sit comfortably on your couch. You have to practically be on top of the TV to read it. They also do not give you any information on how to read the map or what all the symbols mean!!! Really stupid! I'm driving by symbols and I have no clue what I'm passing up. Also they don't explain the symbols on the HUD either. Some are easy to figure out but others are not. Nothing in Options menu to explain them. Also, the on-screen instructions are only up there for about 2 seconds - by the time you scooch up on the couch and get closer to the TV to read them they are gone! Really annoying. Driving is not too bad (anything is better than Watch Dogs!) but it's hard to see the traffic lights (might be easier on PC) until you are right on top of them. This is probably a bad PC port I would think. Overall, it's an okay game so far with some very annoying details! Expand

Whenever you need to take over a racket, you have to do a bunch of inane **** over and over until you can finally either kill or recruit the racket boss. Now, I consider myself pretty patient when it comes to grind-y gameplay, but it even got to ME. I think the only times I ENJOYED doing those lame side missions where for the Dixie Mob and Southern Union rackets because there was just a sweet kind of irony to it. (and because the Hollow is literally the first district you take over). Now, with that being said, the actual STORY is pretty great and getting revenge on actual lieutenants and capos is satisfying. One or two of them even managed to tug on my heartstrings. I do admit that I missed not being able to customize Lincoln or his cars in any way, though. I think there will be DLC for that, which, thankfully, is free. I also disliked that you could only heal via adrenalin and not get a bite to eat to get it back in between missions or something like it. Or that you could only buy weapons from the back of a fan, although that gets explained. Kind of made all the stores feel kind of redundant. Anyway, I'd get this game for the story, characters and gunplay...but only if you're willing to go to an often annoying grind to get from story point to story point. You should probably wait for a price drop too. Expand

If it were not for the story, I'd have stopped playing already. Missions are never more than "drive here, get this/kill dudes, repeat". Police and NPC AI are atrocious.

A lot of things also feel absent. Outfit/vehicle customization did not come standard on day 1. No motorcycles and few boat types. NPCs repeat dialogue far too frequently. You hear the same handful of commercials on the radio over and over again. The game has great promise, but launched far from being a complete package.

The other element that I felt very strongly about was the fact that all Mafia games gave law enforcement a real brain! You hit a car they chase you ! You drive in the oncoming lane they chase you! Speeding ? the same ! The best was the fact you could get away with a fine not a car chase systematically !
This feature disappearing took away one of the only specifities of the series and it's a real shame ! Bring it back !

    Driving was not exceptional otherwise.

Visually it's very unbalanced sometimes great especially at dawn sometimes just bad with too much flare.
I also had a lot clipping and visual glitches (got a guy with white eyes ...)

With the very underrated and likable predecessors Mafia and Mafia 2, you'd think this game would take big leaps since it's being utilized under the current consoles. Sadly it's not the case here with Mafia 3. The game has taken a steps, but the steps are so minor that it doesn't make the game feel any less different than it's predecessors; maybe even less.

    Pros:
-The World of New Bordeaux is great with live NPC reactions.
    -Gameplay is serviceable
-Characters are very dimensional and liking
    -Story is superb
-Graphics are sometimes good. Lighting plays well in affect in some ways. The motion capture though is superb, making every single character alive and very well acted.
    Cons:
-Mundane missions as you basically do the same stuff over again over the next 20 hours
-Like I said, Graphics are "sometimes" good, but most of the time its very average and buggy. With low textures and buggy unsettling environment, it ruins the experience a lot.
-No Fast travel on a semi big map.
-Driving is very stiff; I know that it's during the late 1960's but Mafia 2 was in the 40's , having better control on their cars, so their no excuse that the cars in Mafia 3 shouldn't drive any better.
-Money really has no use since the favors you get from Mob bosses gives you better weapons. Maybe upgrades but the game isn't necessarily that hard to play.
-Everything feels super half-baked in the content department.
    -No customization for Lincoln Clay.
-Weapons don't really feel any different from one anothe.
-The sky box pisses me off with it being rainy and dark for one moment then just turns bright and sunny out of no where. There's no flow in this game.

This game is really an utter disappointment. I'd wait for at least a price drop for 30 bucks. I feel cheated out.

Fantastic story, characters and setting, but a bit disappointing when it comes to the gameplay. It gets quite repetitive after a while and I experienced some irritating graphical bugs as well.

Mafia III is average slop. Bland story, awful glitches, and boring gameplay. Don't bother with this awful crap. I'm glad that this will probably be the last Mafia game.

I was honestly surprised by how many negative reviews this game got. I understand why, but I personally think that the pros out weigh the cons by a lot.

This game has one of the best settings we have seen in a long time. An open world game set in the 1960s in the south during the civil rights movement. So it's very neat to drive around the beautiful open world. Great licensed soundtracks while driving, in cutscenes, and gameplay. Plus, the game's soundtracks are great as well; giving a classic southern gangster feel as you shootout enemies. The voice actors give a great performance in every cutscene in this game. Very likable characters, whether they are antagonist or protagonist. Now, this part I am very confused with. So many people have criticized the gameplay. The driving feels very good, plus the cars are sweet. The gunplay is really good. It is very graphic and satisfying whenever you shoot up the enemies. The stealth is simple, but solid. The melee attacks are prob the best part. You can run up to an enemy and bash their face in and perform a brutal takedown by shooting them in the mouth, gut or head. The violence is very graphic and even disturbing, but that is what makes the gunplay so satisfying.

Now.. this game also has a lot of problems. If I am being biased, I believe that the cons are not too big of a deal. The main flaw with this game that turned everybody off was the repetitive missions. Although it is fun to take the city district by district like a mafia would do, it is very repetitive. Personally this did not bother me much, but it is the main flaw that makes this game from reaching its full potential. Although this is an open world game there are too many glitches. Occasionally the lighting will freak out whenever you enter a building and the mirrors barely even work in this game. Some times it takes a while for the world to load all its details while driving. The AI is not too bad, but it has its moments. Enemies will occasionally see you even if your completely hidden. Police will occasionally get on to you even if you're a mile away from them.

+ Very neat setting, with a beautiful world
    + Fantastic characters and cutscenes
    + Gruesome and satisfying gameplay
+ Classic cars that drive very smoothly
    + Fun boss levels
    + Sweet weapons
+ Fun collectables (more fun if you're a pervert)

+- Graphics are decent for its time
+- AI is not bad, but will break at moments
+- Get great deals from Mafia gangs, but it's not a challenge to earn the deals

    - Repetitive missions, which can potentially lose the appeal to the entire game
    - Too many unacceptable glitches, but at least it's nothing game breaking though
    - Game has no real challenge, has almost the same level of difficulty throughout
    - No fast traveling, which can occasionally be a pain

This game can be very enjoyable for the right person. If you enjoy very mature stories with unique settings, this game is for you. If you don't mind repetitive missions because you're a fan of uncomplicated violent gameplay, this game is for you. Basically saying that if you wished that Quentin Tarantino made video games.. this game is for you. If looking for a game like GTA.. then never get this game. If you can stand it when games are repetitive, then do not get this game.

This is not a great game, but it can be very enjoyable if played by the right person.

Not a bad game by any means, but I would wait till the price drops to grab it. I played a friend's copy and I can say I would've been a bit annoyed if I had paid full price myself.

Still, I think the criticism is a bit exaggerated. It's not bad!

not a good entry into the series. They replaces realism with arcadey style of play. Vehicles moves much less realistically unlike its predecessors which was the whole appeal of Mafia. Found it hard pleasing all 3 bosses, always one of them would get mad about my decisions or favoring the others. Repetitive execution in combat was annoying

It's not that bad, actually. Just don't expect this to be a masterpiece of a script. Mafia 3 is the type of games, which is overpriced at a full price, but plays really well when bought on sale. This game can bring some great hours of gameplay, first 2-3 hours of introduction is aboslutely great. Overall, this game is not so bad.

Extremely mediocre. I thought I'd 100% it really quick and delete it because it's the largest game on my HDD. However, I'm almost done with my 2nd playthrough and I have recruited everyone i can and New Boss trophy wont pop. No reason for me to play anymore if the trophy is glitched. I will say it's a much more fulfilling revenge story than TLOU2

I've played this game for hours and gets no better. It also lacks realism. Something that I felt really separated this game series from the other open world games. Watch Dogs is more realistic then this. Polish? What polish? This game full of glitches. You can't actually buy a lot of things so money is often pointless. Two town in Skyrim has more content than Mafia III. The world is well designed but it feels dead and pedestrians feel equivalent to pedestrians in 3D GTA games. The graphics are so bland. In cutscenes it looks great, but outside of them it looks like this game was made in 2011. Although this game has an awesome story and good characters. But for me you need more elements than that if you're going to make a good game. Expand

From the environments to the extremely good soundtrack without forgetting the beautiful cars that handle typically like cars from that time, I really enjoyed wandering around in New Bordeaux. Some buildings are also very well designed with a lot of detail. Even games like GTA V don’t do better or even as good. Mafia III has been developed with the goal of having an extreme sense of detail. Those small things, like your tires that remain turned when you exit the car, the radio that evolves with the story, etc make it unique.

However, one first big problem of Mafia 3 is the AI of ennemies. They are quite dumb in combat, and in a few minutes you will have learned everything you need to know in order to never be caught when engaging stealth combat (unless you’re unlucky). AI during stealth is terrible, dumb and totally blind. It really is the dumbest AI ever, I can whisper behind a wall and all the 5 men of a racket would so dumbly come close and get killed in the exact same way. One AI aspect that I liked however is the driving of NPCs. They are reasonably fast where they need to be (unlike GTA) and drive pretty realistically. That is another important element adding immersion to the game.

To continue on the good, Mafia III is good in the way that it denounces racism by showing how serious sh*t could be a few dozens of years ago. From modern slavery to publicly accepted racism such as no-black stores, it is clear the developers wanted to send a message and I like the fact Mafia III is not scared to show this. That’s also part of what I mean when I say care for detail. Nowadays, too many games don’t dare to take risks anymore by fear of not being politically correct and I don’t think Mafia enters that category.

Then I can talk about the story, another crucial aspect of Mafia games. Actually, the story is interesting. It is well built, and going after the organization from bottom to top is in the spirit of a good mafia-movie plot. Donovan and Clay are a good duo, and all the main missions are reasonably well written. Unfortunately, the main story (which, taken alone, is quite short) is slowed down by a TON of side missions that are extreeeeeemely repetitive. Each boss you have to take down necessitates that you clean the neighborhood with 4 to 10 things to do beforehand. And that is a problem since it represents 80% of the game. Obviously, all the dialogs coming with those side missions are incredibly fade. It’s always the same. It became atrocious at a point where they would reuse a building for 2 or even 3 different missions. For example, you might totally beat the hell out of an enemy hideout by killing everyone and then you would have to come back to that exact same spot to kill an under-boss, and then magically the building would be full of enemies again.

Continuing gameplay-wise, I enjoyed the cops in this game. The pursuits can be really epic (not GTA V style where you get shot to death for having just punched someone). I felt some Blues Brothers vibes! I also encountered some random events that happened to be very cool. For example, I once got followed by cops in a friendly camp, and some epic shooting followed, involving my fellow allies taking my side and shooting at the cops. Be warned, police isn’t flawless either though. I’ve experienced many situations where for example, huge shootings happened in the middle of crowded areas with cops remaining not alerted despite being a few blocks away.

Finally and technically-wise, Mafia III can be as good as it can be terrible. As mentioned, the world feels and looks great, a lot of good work has been put on designing a cool map. Unfortunately, there are way too many bugs. Not even talking about the heavily present aliasing and ghosting which I still don’t mind too much, but it’s more about cinematics with no sound, cars popping totally wrecked, missions not launching requiring a full console restart, NPCs not recognizing my truck trailer, weather staying stuck on night raining, NPCs panicking and leaving their cars at red lights (???), enemies spawning when you’re in hostile zone already, silencer that isn’t silent, etc.

To wrap this long review up, I would say that Mafia III is still worth it especially at low price. Why? Because of its exceptional ambiance and world, its care for detail, the cars, and the cool (but basic) story. That of course comes at a cost of knowing that skipping side content will be more than needed and that resulting from that, the game will feel short.

The customization options available to the player in this game are very limited, because the car customization is very basic, the weapons are not customizable, and there are only a few outfits for you to choose from.

In terms of gameplay, you will probably experience some of the game's gunfights, which are, in my opinion are pretty decent and satisfying, and alltough the stealth is pretty mediocre, you will probably have fun taking out the enemies.

Now, its a fun game and all, but its not worthy of the 60$ it costs. Why?
Because after taking over the first district, you will have to do the same exact procedure for about 20 times, and it gets boring. I'd expect from the developer to add some interest to those awefully repetivite missions, but they are just the same.

The open world in this game, aside from its being so awefully repetitive, is just empty and boring.
AI is stupid and not interesting, and there is nothing to do except the main campaign.

And as for the driving -
    Well,
    it sucks.
    really sucks.

And again, if it wasnt that super repetitive, it was actually a pretty good game. Not GTAV or MGSV,
but still a pretty good game. And i think you shouldn't buy it for more than 10 bucks, because Mafia 3 is just one of those third person shooters.

There is just nothing special in it.
in Watch Dogs its the live city, in GTAV its the amazing characters, in MGSV its the gameplay, but Mafia 3 does not excell in any of those things.

i mean sure, the setting is cool but the main character is so heavily focused on its revenge so the player cant really enjoy exploring the vibe of the city.

Its stealth is too repetitive, its gunfights too familiar, and its driving too boring to support anything else that’s going on. Despite how clever it manages to be in portraying the conquest and control of a criminal enterprise, the nuts-and-bolts missions feel like busywork, and it never fully explores the most interesting aspects of its setting. It’s better than Mafia II, but that’s damning it with faint praise.

It could have been a really great sandbox for one evening. It’s a shame the developers decided to extend it by over a dozen completely redundant hours, because they had fresh ideas for around one fifth of the campaign and made the rest of the game repetitive as hell. [12/2016, p.48]
