Beautiful, the combat's a lot of fun, surprisingly difficult, but plagued with too much padding in many sections.

Yes, this game only covers the Midgar section of the original, so it's necessary to extend and pad the run time to justify your purchase, but like pointless meandering in some sections is so boring and uninteresting and holds back such a well-crafted game that really pays

I love the original, so it's fun to play through an updated and reimagined version like this.

Great game and an improvment from the original the characters aswell as the soundtrack are fleshed out and characters like jessce get some attention to make you attached to them the graphics are incredible especially in cutscenes. the story is supposed to be an alternate universe the ghosts try to do everything to keep the future like the original and our main cast wants to change it Expand

This is an excellent game that I think which remind me of FF7 in 1997 when I was a child. The characters are exactly the same I though it would be! The fight mechanism is beautifully done, and the resolutions of the game is just tremendous. The open-cliffed ending is also excellent since we players can talk about it after this game!

I wonder who are the "brainiacs" behind this fiasko they call a 'game'? This is not a product of the SquareEnix I know, this here is **** on an epic scale.

Not giving any spoilers, but, all of you considering to play this game - I highly advise against it unless you want to rip out all of your hair on your scalp out of pure frustration due to the retardo-mechanics* this game is full of (*I will get into that in just a moment)

    Pros:
NONE - this game doesn't even begin to resemble any FF game I have previously played. It **** sucks. Streamlined, one way, linear piece of ****

Cons: TOO MANY TO LIST HERE! But I will give you a few:
    - The retarded minigames, 50 million minus points for those - **** you Square for adding that crap into an already shoddy game!
    - bosses are way too OP if you don't grind high enough levels before advancing your game, but oh, what is that you say? No possibility of proper grinding? NO (a basic RPG game would offer some form of grinding, to advance in levels and get somewhat of a fighting chance when facing bosses, but here? Square says "trolololol enjoy this retardo-mechanic we put here, fight 1 maybe 3 enemies that give you next to no XP, and THEN face a retardo-boss with insane HP and strength! HAHAHA" then the cinematic scenes cut you off mid-spell slinging, and you loose all of your ATB charges - FUN AIN'T IT!?
    - Controls are way off too many times
    - Camera functions are OFF - when locking on to enemies, you loose track of whoever it is you're attacking very easily, and during boss fights this is not recommended AT ALL
    - Maps are unclear and soggy foggy and **** compared to even the simplest of FPS games
    - Many of the materia you are allowed to use don't even work, buggy **** retardo-mechanics strike again!
    - Some locations are poorly shown on maps (where to go etc.) you have to run around like a headless chicken for hours on end, to find that **** manifesting AFTER you went from point A to...Z by jumping over all previous steps..:THEN point B is suddenly there for you! What a lovely retardo-mechanic we have here! (*sarcasm*)
    - Battles don't feel fun, they are a massive chore to say the least, especially the retarded OP boss fights, have fun dying 50 trillion times just to smash your last controller to the ground because of the lovely retardo-mechanics that just DON*T WORK IN THIS PIECE OF ****

Well, I think I have said enough - you get the point, this ...(can't even call it a game, its a BRAIN****) is a cloggy, ****, maggoty, buggy, retardo-mechanic lovefest that'll make you regret even starting the piece of **** software. Play the original, it is a billion lightyears better than this **** since it was made back when Square knew how to make RPG's, shamefully they don't know that anymore...

Like why, in combat, can I sometimes take a potion and at other times I can't? How do MP regenerate? Can I regenerate them in combat? This all becomes critical when the battles go from being rather easy with a bit of a challenge when a larger mechanical enemy comes along to a sudden, massive jump not very far into the game. This is basically an impossible battle unless you have the combat system really thoroughly down. That might be fine if you have played other FF games, but that is ridiculous. It is not like the combat in other games I've played.

Ruins what looked like being a reasonable game.

The story is different in a good way imo, remembered me of Chrono Cross. Graphics are good, enjoyed to discover Midgar a lot, hopefully the next part won't be so linear. The combat system is actually very good, but the balancing of it is a mess. Materia-System works well. Besides the story line not much to do.

It is just one really good epic story. With great characters an awesome world to explore. And the visuals. The game really looks good. One thing that stands out for me. Is just the huge amount of detail put into it, I can tell that it’s a PS4 game and I can only image new games will look even better. For instance. Many textures are low quality due to obvious limitations of the PS4. But even so the game clearly shows that other developers could do a lot more to make a world stand out. This was one of the first games I actually felt like the world was alive simply because of all the people talking around any city hub. It is just impossible to hear every single conversation but that’s ok. The fact that those conversations are based on player actions just makes it even more rewarding. It’s a game with all those elements that clearly show that it’s a game, But it’s a movie as well. A really good movie by the way. Awesome storytelling that just makes me want to see what happens next. You must play this. I’m extremely confident that given what I’ve seen in this game, that future sequels on PS5 will be jaw dropping. They really know what makes a world look epic. Expand

You can't improve a masterpiece square enix, stop trying. Square soft was much better than you. All you had to do was make the same damn game with improved graphics /sound, and this game would have been 100x better. I'm even fine with some changes here and there, in fact the battle system is pretty good, but when you go and change core elements of the story and put in modern rpg side quest trash like "go collect 5 cats!" you can **** right off. It's also incredibly stupid how certain songs play completely out of place. For example in the original, there would be a dark eerie song playing during clouds flashback of sephiroth or something. That same song will play in FF7 remake with some pointless interaction with cloud and Tifa at the bar. It's just mindless fan service like "oooh look guys member this song!?". Not to mention the collecting of song disks around town... way to ruin immersion. Drop your damn ego square enix. You've literally never made a good final fantasy game and you've ruined a legendary series. You had an easy job with this game to just copy what your superiors did with FF7 but you couldn't even do that. Pathetic. Glad I didn't spend money on this and waited for it to be free with ps+.

My only minor complaints would be the battles with "certain characters" that you do not get to kill, and keep coming back (which I'm sure is neccesary for the story line of the entire franchise, but it felt unsatisfying to me). And the endless little moments of "are they going to say what they feel about eachother" and then not saying it (but that is probably just a very japanesy thing to do...).

I looooove the original FF7, but think if they hadn't changed things I wouldn't enjoy it as much as I did with FF7R. It would have been me just being nostalgic without worrying what would happen next, and that would be 0 tension or stakes for someone who knows the original story so well. This isn't an adaptation--I didn't want FF7 scene by scene, and the fact that they've added the "ghost" of original fans wanting everything to be the same as part of the story is smart and kind of ironic. I wanna keep this spoiler-free, so I just will say the total score I would give this game depends on the second part. I want them to keep the psychology and all the stuff about Cloud. I cannot wait to see the rest of the beloved characters. I love the original, and I love this one. I love them both so much, and again, I can't believe they made this dream come true. Expand

You can't even switch characters, you always have 3 or less in your party so the game doesn't create a scenario where you pick whos in your team(except maybe the final boss) I mean the game is fine, arguably one of the best graphics on the PS4 and the sound track isn't anything to sneeze at either. The combat is ok I guess but the only enemy encounters are on a linear track. There aren't any wide open explorable spaces to fight enemies .I don't know why the bothered putting an exp on the game if almost every player fights the same amount of enemies. There's only 24 sides quests and as I'm writing this I can only remember like one of them. After finishing the game, the game said there was more too do but I just didn't feel like doing it. I felt like i have done all the game had to offer and have no real desire to play it again. Expand

the game looks pretty good, and the action is decent, worth a run-through if you can get it at a less-than $60 price tag... but there are so many disappointing issues...

summons are only available during pre-determined battles, awkward and mostly pointless or useless, half the time I was ABLE to summon, by the time my summon showed up the battle was over, once the summon arrives, they just stand around until your charge your ATB meter again to call specific commands, throughout the course of the game they almost never helped me win a fight, or the fight was over before they had time to do anything useful, they didn't ever once feel powerful or awe-insipiring as they did in FF generations past...

the game is extremely LINEAR, despite a few "choices" there is little-to-no open exploration that the series was once known for, with numerous narrow corridors and isolated chapters, it never feels open-ended in any way, presumably, hopefully, some of this is coming in the sequel, when the original FF7 actually opened up a bit... if you take an obvious wrong turn on the map, you might get a few boxes to smash or a chest with a high-potion...

the optional side-quests, although some of them are necessary for achievements, special items, or banal alternate versions of a few story threads, are largely disappointing too, you might be chasing missing cats, or finding CDs for a jukebox to inspire stand-around NPC's, generally just doing laps around the same map...

although the graphics are generally very high quality, the diversity of scenarios and art direction was another big disappointment, with very few exceptions, almost the entire game takes place in the same two generic industrial slums or corporate complexes, there was very little diversity in the color palette or locales, with Aerith's home being one of the few occasions where there was some color or marginally "fantasy" setting...

there are a few weapons, armor and materia combos to choose from & play around with, which adds a certain degree of customization, but ultimately during my playthrough these also felt largely pointless, I never really needed to, nor felt inspired to use half the materia acquired, and most of the weapons or armor were simply sub-par and didn't really impact the battle strategy...

the weapons upgrade menu also felt underwhelming and ultimately kind of pointless...

by the time the game was over, it constitutes literally only the opening sequences of the original FF7, and i felt very little motivation to explore the post game content, which includes a "hard" mode, a small handful of alternate, but inconsequential story threads to witness, a "secret" boss battle which takes place in a lame, VR fight simulator, and a "summon" that is pretty irrelevant...

although I am hard-pressed to say this game was bad, I feel very underwhelmed... the original FF7 on PS1 was a vastly superior game... i hope the sequel can find some of the fun from the original FF7 that is clearly missing here...

The graphics, soundtrack, voice acting is top notch and i loved seeing this my childhood game remade with these amazing graphics. minor spoiler: Some things i didnt like was that i was really hoping that some of the scenes from the original would have been stilll in the game like the part in the original where you get arrested in the shinra building, in this game that part they basically turned it into a tedious dungeon that took awhile to finish, i feel it just drags on some of the dungeons in this game. Let me start by saying that this game is great, it's nothing extremely special, but neither is original FF7. None of these games are god tier. I get that. if it's your favorite gaming series, then sure, but if we look at bigger picture, this game is nothing extraordinary. There are more interesting bosses in games like Resident Evil 4, more interesting characters in other games. But that's not me hating this game. Hell no. I actually really like this one, surprisingly i would say. Because i have never really cared for this series, but i have always known that they exist, they just never interested me. But this remake actually made best out of what the original was. Like this is literally best version of that game. This version actually made me care. Characters are not some low-resolution images anymore, but feel like actual characters. Now let's get to the reason why i even made this stupid account to write this actually very important review. There's absolutely nothing i hate more on this planet, than these absolute losers who give this game 0 out of 10 and claim that they have been hardcore fans since 80s and this new one is bad blah blah blah. Just give up. I'm literally telling you, if you are one of these people, just give up gaming, forever. It was same **** with resident evil remake (where's muh fixed camera angles), but it seems to be even worse with FF7 Remake. 8.2? Seriously? It's so obvious some absolute losers have tried to lower this score. But guess what. Nobody cares. Most people seems to like this game and FF16 will be even more action oriented. And no i don't care either. I'm just here telling you that nobody cares about your hate and whining. Because someone needs to say it. If you don't like these new games, that fair. Nobody forces you to play them, but that doesn't mean you just have to leave tons of 0/10 reviews, because it's so obvious that here are many double accounts. You have absolutely no right to ruin other people's fun. Go play your cartoon looking 90s games as much as you want and leave games like FF7Remake and FF16 to people who want actually fleshed out stories, good animations, top level graphics and characters who actually feel alive. Solid game, would recommend. Expand

impressive CGI ( sometimes inconsistent in quality though ).
interesting battle system and what else? maybe that’s it really....everything else left me conflicted; cheesy dialogues, shallow and incoherent story....It plays on nostalgia and how you remember the universe and characters from the original game.

    Warning Spoilers!
    .
    .
    My only concern in this Remake is its story, most precisely Sephiroth;
unfortunately for him after being a well written villain in the original ff7 game (for me the equivalent of the Darth Vader in games) he became heavily disrespected by the writers especially In Advent Children and Kingdom Hearts where we see him as a pathetic man without much of a plan that can easily be brushed aside once the script decide its time for him to lose, in Dissidia he is constantly defeated every time he test himself against Cloud, you are not supposed to fear him anymore but to laugh at him.
In this remake they didn’t bother to introduce him how he originally was introduced but instead (thanks to Nomura and co. ) they assumed everybody already knew who Sephiroth was; a ridiculously over the top villain with no life that keep stalking Cloud.
So here is my question; if your antagonist starts as weak as your hero, then what is it left for the hero to strive against? If Cloud and his party are already all powerful and all mighty defeating consecutively Jenova, the Arbiter of Faith and Sephiroth himself at 1/4 of the game then what shall I be excited for in the next game?
Is it the adventures of Cloud? an unstable liar and violent punk or the intrigues of Aerith? aka Mary Sue going on a mission to save the world by changing destiny and bla bla bla ...
My point is that weak villains make for weak stories because it rob the narrative of its tension and drama and end up undermining the heroes themselves, because if they are not tested by worthy opponents then they haven’t really achieved anything.

The first good FF game since PS2. Square Enix is finally - starting - to come back.

FFVIIR is a good game, enjoyable as hell, yet not great. The reason?
    It's inconsistent:
-Dialogues are mostly great, but often mediocre and anime-like. I hope the next time we Italians will have subtitles based off the English dub...
-Story pacing is mostly great, but often mediocre or forced due to padding.
-Main missions are mostly great, but sidequests are almost entirely mediocre and/or uninspired fetch-quests.
-Graphics are mostly great, but with tons of technical issues - way too many for a tripleA game.
-Characters' models are great, but NPCs are almost entirely stock-quality-level - and with a different art style.
-Characters' personalities are very much flashed out, yet filled with inconsistencies - like when Tifa is shocked about Cloud willing to kill an enemy... but it's a trait she immediately loses the next second.
-The music is stellar. Period. 10/10.
-The last portion of the game is suddenly KingdomHearts-like and makes heavy uses of meta-narrative. This is not a bad thing per se...
But in this case, it messes with everything FFVII has ever been. It really feels like you're playing a different game... and not in a good way, a choice that can very well ruin future installments. I'm not surprised that OG fans are pissed about this (Even if leaving 0/10 reviews is childish, please don't).

The only consistent aspects of this game are:
    - The soundtrack. Beautiful, beautiful soundtrack.
    - The battle system.
At first I was not sure about this but the more I explored it... the more I fell in love with it.
To the point where I almost earned the Platinum Trophy even if, as said, I think this is a game that barely misses being an 8/10.

    Worth the money.

And yet, they nailed it. I am the biggest FF VII fanboy out there, someone who despises dirge of cerberus and a lot of Crisis Core/Advent Children for how it goes against the quality writing and characters of the original game.

But this game somehow managed to meet all of those unrealistic expectations, I was ready to be disappointed, to just be happy I get to explore a 3d Midgar and take in the sights.

They nailed every single character, Aerith, Barret, Tifa, AVALANCHE, everyone is the best they have been in years, perhaps ever.

After XV's atrocious combat feel, getting the battle director for Kingdom Hearts 2 definitely helped this game, feedback on movement and attacks is perfect, it's less an action RPG and more a really smart and fun hybrid of action and regular turn based JRPG, managing ATB and constantly swapping between party members for the right strategies in fights for the new game plus hard mode made a second playthrough even more enthralling than the first. The combat system even in this early stage has so much potential and fun in it.

You'd think with such a controversial ending, and how critical I've been over every compilation of FF VII title that it would bother me a lot, but it really doesn't. Square has earned my trust with this remake, and I stare at the future with a true chidlike wonder at the fact that I don't know what's going to happen next.

But I am unbelievably excited for it, and it's nice to be hopeful for the future of FF VII storytelling once again, I have complete faith in wherever they take the story, as the love and care they poured into every inch of midgar, and the characters inside it, practically leaps off the screen.

I'm really grateful I got to live long enough to experience something I as a child always dreamed of happening, and it somehow meeting that child inside me's hype for it.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Final Fantasy VII Remake is a landmark in terms of what a videogame is, and a reference to other companies when they ask themselves: How do we remake an important game?
It's difficult for me not to give it a 10/10 because of some nitpicks and technical issues I had, or maybe points where I go "It'd be better if they just did it THIS way!". But personally, this is GOTY for me. REALLY personally, it's the best game I played.
The technical issues I can point out are basically the texture issues and the camera/flying combat issues, but I don't think they are too heavy problems when compared to the masterpiece that is the rest of the game. Superb soundtracks and character development take you by the hand show you the way through a linear, 40 hour campaign that is rich with little details and beautiful moments. It respects the original and it DELIVERS when it has to. The ending is divisive, we come to learn that the game isn't a 1:1 Remake (even though the creators already said that). Personally, I have no problems with that whatsoever, and I see it as a way to raise the stakes and make every important moments of future parts even more impactful. Instead of playing with your memories, the objective here is to play with your same feelings that you had when you played the original, which is incredible.
There's some replayability, and Hard Mode is very cool to challenge yourself through. Also, fighting Sephiroth the way we do in the ending is just what I've been dreaming about. Did you think One-Winged Angel couldn't be more epic? Well, it can. And it IS.

    Technically: 9/10
Personally: 10/10 best game, can't wait for the future parts.

the minigames - like the bike sequences are so awfully terrible - how could something like that have stayed in the game?
difficulty - completely messed up difficulty - way too hard on normal with this poor battle system. when switched to easy you can basically (mostly) just beat through anything while the clunky combat system will be the biggest challenge.

really a poor overall effort and worthy FLOP of the year 2020.

I finished the game over a weekend, that sure was the length of a mainline final fantasy game let me tell ya.

Overall after play it multiple times I have hope that they can do something interesting with the plot but this isn’t a remake. The way things play out it feel like a sequel sort of. Very cool idea!

The graphics is great here and heavily emphasized on character models where it matters instead of wasting resources on genitals. The world is great too because it's linear and not some open world mess that's filled with bugs and useless chatter. They even put great detail into the NPC speech. With great lines and further flushing out the detail of the world.

The story is original and possibly can't be told any better than it is here. Fillers are present Too and it fills up the world. They also give you some extra time to relax in between chapters. Side quests are curated. Not the best, but they each offer unique dialogue and cutscenes to further flush out the main world and story. They allow you to enjoy the world that they have painstakingly created here. And they serve as breaks. Because the main story are more like chapters in a series. Very well paced to create a sense of exploration and discovery.

There are many locations in this game. And considering you can go though vents, walk amongst the roofs, sewers, maze like labs, ruins, and even 59 flights of staircases . Every other publisher would have cut this out because they are tedious when you say it.. no one wants that kind of content apparently. But hey it's here.. with uniquely designed dialogue and a great sense of progression along the way. No skin gathering to make bags, sticks gathering to make arrows, and all that kind of tedious progression wall here.

The game is not realistic and it shouldn't be. It doesn't require you to craft, or even upgrade your stats. There's like an auto system to do everything. But manual system is also there for the hardcore. It's enjoyable. The combat is as flashy as it gets. You feel like a hero in the story. And who would choose to be a peasant in a game? You want to kick ass and this game lets you.. that alone should warrant 10/10

There are alot of cutscenes in the game all with great graphics and mostly rendered in game. This is a technical feat even for today considering most games can't even create a smooth transition without a blackout frame or something. Performance also holds up quite well on a PS4 Pro that is. The graphics is really good here and you will be hard pressed not to be impressed. Textures are not great but I can't even be bothered to care because the majority of the times you would be staring at the characters rather than the wall or floors. Because look, it's not important or memorable to stare at the floors or walls right? The composition is what matters and it works really well here. Scenes are coloured and properly composed to invoke emotion and tension. Faces and character models are the best of any game.

This game is not a short breeze. It's quite long and properly paced if you take it slowly.. it's around 2 to 3 hours per chapter. Just nice for a session every night.. for the people who love to blow through the whole thing in 1 day.. I would understand why they complain about the side quests.

The soundtrack is amazing. Voice acting is absolutely perfect too.. I played it with Japanese voice and it's great.. because that's how it's built and meant to be played.. if you think the English dub is out of sync probably open your mind abit and play it with Japanese voice and subs. Because the world is global and English is just one small language.

I enjoyed this very much. It has a great story and also unexpected quirks. I wouldn't detail it here to avoid spoilers but these are the little things that makes this game particularly memorable. Don't pass on this.

They added a lot of content to the game, some of which was good, but mostly added a lot of padding to have enough content to make a sellable game. Aerith has been turned into an obnoxious chatterbox, which helps to occupy the time that was padded onto the travelling sections.

Music has been shoved into the background in the remake, and is the worst change from the original. The original's music was very prominent and one of the most memorable aspects of the game. It created strong emotional ties to what was happening in the game. Whether it was the sense of mystery and discovery from the title theme, the energy and urgency of the battle music, or the presence given to the different locations by their respective theme music. All of that is missing from the remake. Music in the remake is very quiet and barely noticeable in most sections. You have to stop and intently listen for it to notice it.

Combat was updated to an action RPG system, and I mostly like the changes. However, one key ability has an incorrect description that causes the whole system to fall apart. The character's focus abilities only increase the stagger gauge if the enemy is pressured. The in game description doesn't mention anything about the pressured state being needed for this ability to work. If the description had mentioned the pressured state, it would have set up the strategy of triggering pressure, using focus abilities to trigger stagger, and then dealing tons of damage during stagger. If I had know this during my playthrough on normal difficulty, it would have completely changed combat for me.

I wish there had been difficulty setting in between normal and easy. Easy lets you win by mashing buttons. Normal difficulty was pretty challenging because I was still learning how to utilize character switching, aggro mechanics, and the stagger mechanics (thanks broken ability description). It should be fine for a second playthrough or Remake pt. 2/? if they don't change the combat. For my first time playing with this combat system, I found it more frustrating than enjoyable.

Finally, this game has more loading screens disguised as characters squeezing through a tight place than my entire game collection combined.

    Good

    - voices were done really well.

    - visuals look stunning

    - boss fights are challenging. Switching chars to counter certain attacks is fun

    - the ATB gauge maintains the turn based element in the real time combat. This separates it from games like tales

    - the shop refilling the necessary items on discount reduces the menuing which I appreciate.

    - I loved the auto weapon leveling. It greatly decreased the amount of menuing I had to do. But it's still there for those who like customization.

    - once I got a hang of the combat, the fights can become quite exhilarating.

    - Glad to see the pay homage to Zack at the end.

    - the themes of the various areas were unique. One second I'm in a steam punk reactor setting, then a busy clubbing street, then the slums, then a haunted factory. There was a lot of diversity, keeping it fresh.

    Bad

    - countering should have been explained more in depth. Doesn't seem like I can counter all attacks. What can and can I not counter??

    - some of the gestures are weird. Not human like. Over done. Kind of like anime.

    - Jessie is way too flirty. It's awkward watching her flirt even in front of her avalanche team members. I'm not even in wedge and Biggs shoes, but I'm weirded out in their stead.

    - some of the movement animations were ridgid. Especially the transitions from real-time movement 2 a cutscene. Last of Us 2 is an example where that transition is done seamlessly, well FF7 still carries on that rigid transitions you see and old RPGs. Facial animations of NPCs are mostly very rigid.

    - the game is very linear.

    - not being able to cancel an attack combo into dodge roll is inconvenient. But maybe it's to force the player to plan ahead before attacking, which if is the case, then forgivable.

    - whenever clouds block animation faces the opposite way of the incoming attack, it looks very weird. I wish they would have made Cloud automatically turn around oh, so that at least it would look like he was blocking the attack. Although the attack is still considered blocked, it just visually looks weird.

    - the lever puzzle is so shallow and boring and it doesn't work properly I clearly matched the timing, but it still didn't work many times, which was frustrating.

    - aerith is too overly positive. To the point where she doesn't seem human. Even her "angry" emotion is not angry at all. She's like an android.

    - feels like I'm watching a chick flick. There's so much focus on romance and flirting themes. The flirting is too blatant. I like when it's hinted, not when it's so obvious.

    - teammate AI really dumb sometimes. Don't evade or defend properly. And builds docus meter so slow.

    - parry attack has no i-frames, meaning if I parry an attack I can potentially be killed by another incoming attack during my counter attack. This makes parrying unsafe at times. Cloud should be invulnerable during the counter attack. Either that or let me parry the second hit.

It tries to mix action with turn-based and fails miserably. I was skeptical of FFXV because of the action, but it actually worked--because the game doesn't try to do two things at once, so it's fun and I ended up loving it. FFVII is just another awful ARPG that yet again encourages game developers to make terrible ARPGs. Additionally, the minigames are excruciatingly awful. (The Honeybee Inn dance sequence was a prime example of how not to make a rhythm game.) More so than the original FFVII minigames, and that's saying something.

It somehow manages to be more boring than the original despite fleshing out the world. It doesn't flesh out the world that well--mindless, meaningless sidequests abound. I did appreciate the bigger role AVALANCHE's characters play--but that's about it. I simply couldn't bring myself to care about any other additional characters. The story meanders and it seems like 75% filler. Not a good look.

The remade versions of old tracks are pretty great, but the new tracks are utterly forgettable. The graphics are incredibly uneven--moreso than FFXV!--with a lot of nice graphics, but some that belong in the early PS3 era. (And the notorious blurry/pixelated textures that looks imported from an early PS2 game.)

Honestly, if this game weren't a remake of a beloved classic, it would be rightfully panned. As it is, people do the whole "OMG FFVII!" thing and it's pretty sad. Heck, even I am going to do it when I buy the second one, just to see if the transition out of Midgar helps any.

The graphic is insanely good and beautiful. The combat is not as tactical as the classical turnbased combat as the original one, it sometime feels messy but it works well never the less.
The original saga is long and this game covers only about 1/4 of it to roughly put it. There was much they could have done to break aside the main story path, they tossed in some mandatory sidequest that felt..useless.. But the core is the storyline, as the original was, purely story driven.
All in all, a true to the vein of japanese story telling, character mannerism and (at times) corny episodes (The Honeybee Inn dance off was ultimately gay in every form)
But it did not dissapoint. I still hold the original version at my #1 spot of all time. Always have, always will.
I am just not so sure if i want to experience the next chapters and the emotional episode that will take place (players of the original game will know what i am talking about)

Everyone else is happy with the release of the first really powerful single-player release from the internal Square Enix studio for many years. Especially after the failure of Final Fantasy XV.

A good remake of the introductory part of the cult-favorite Final Fantasy VII. It improves on the original game in almost all aspects, yet lacks in scale and drops the ball at the very end.

What matters is still intact, and that’s the heart and soul of one of the greatest stories in video game history.
