I enjoyed the original game and I found this a bad game very well dressed.
Cinematics are cool, of course, but gameplay is horrible. Slow on exploration parts and frustrating in combats, where the cameras are an absolute disaster. Puzzles are tedious and absurd.
The story is very confusing. We do not know why what happens or what the bad guys want to do ... and there will be a second

Great visuals and art. Combat is a good balance of flash and enough depth that it isn't button mashing. Great music. Dialogue and writing can be hit or miss although mostly it is miss, although it doesn't stop the characters from being at least likable.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. you know, i feel like everyone who gave this game a 10/10 didn't play the original. the visuals are good but performance felt choppy and some textures looked awkward. music was good but the original also had good music so it doesn't necessarily make this game superior. combat is better or worse depending on what you like, however, it doesn't matter either way as the materia was always the fun part about ff7 combat, and since this game is only 1/7 of ff7, original ff7 has much more materia options, and for that reason, the combat is more interesting in original ff7. the story is just sh*t in this game. foreshadowing in this game can barely be called foreshadowing. they hint at cloud not being a soldier during midgar except everyone around cloud just doesn't care that he's not a soldier for some reason, despite that it should be a surprise since only tifa should know. a lot of dialogues are also sh*t. the added backstory to characters is pretty bland and uninteresting, on top of that they don't add much depth to the main cast and only focus on side characters no one cared about (except for yuffie but she's in ff7ri and is technically a side character). the side quests are also bland and uninteresting. the worst part of this game though, is definitely the ending, which is also sh*t. basically, everything related to writing is sh*t and whether the combat is good or not is debatable. the excuse for this review would probably be "well it's a reboot not a remake" but that's false advertising, which is a crime, and it wouldn't even change the fact that the side characters and added backstory are bland and uninteresting. overall, i'd recommend playing the original since you won't have to wait 30 years and it's also not a cashgrab.

to be fair, at least this game actually had good translation which is one plus i guess, but it should be expected from a $60 game (for context, the original PSX release had a sloppy translation. it does actually have a fan translation though, which is much better. unfortunately, it's pretty buggy and a few things are broken. from my experience, it took about an hour to do the shinra march minigame due to not working properly and trying to attain the cave materias crashed the emulator.)

Amazing title. I first was sceptical, since I did not play the original game back then. But with it being in PS Plus, I gave it a chance. And boy it did not disappoint. Really liked the art style and the combat system. Still a bit unfinished for me, but the story was amazing for me as a new player.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. As a huge lover of the original FFVII, this was somewhat of a letdown. It was extremely exciting seeing the characters redone in more modern graphics, and I absolutely loved the characters and voice acting (although still, wth about Barret's weird sunglasses?). I was not thrilled about the side quests as they were lackluster and didn't enrich the story at all. I also understand the whole Tifa/Cloud/Aerith love triangle, but they made it a little weird and added some additional weird extra flirtiness with Jesse, I loved her character otherwise.

I could forgive all of that and would have given it at least an 8 if it hadn't been for the odd time dementors. That just made the whole story lean toward the ridiculous side. I also was disappointed with how they treated Biggs, Wedge, and (possibly) Jesse's original deaths. The original gave so much meaning to Barret's story, and now Wedge was saved by a time dementor, then maybe killed offscreen later randomly? I don't know, it just all seemed out of place.

The ending is what makes me fear for the rest of the series. I don't think I will buy the 2nd until I know how the story will go. If they hadn't said from the getgo it was going to be a fairly faithful recreation, I wouldn't be so disappointed. Other than the discrepancies, the game was pretty, the combat was fun, and the rest of the story was enriched. I particularly liked how they added more to the Wall Market. Overall, about 6/10 for me.

Now, let M. Night Shyamalan rewrite the ending. But it's not really the ending, it's only the first arc, which you paid worth a triple A value. They could have fleshed out the story, but they retcon and spoil significant climactic parts of the complete game. Now, it's a reboot with an alternate timeline. This new generation has a knack for deflecting criticism and make it out about failures of pleasing everyone. The requests for a remake were clear: same story, modern graphics.

If your critical review gets enough helpful votes, they take it down. They must be thinking about Square Enix stocks.

Finished the game, done all sidequests with 50+ hours on it. I have played and finished the original, and because of that, there are numbers of elements that made me disappointed with this remake.

First off, the padding, and no matter who looks at it, this is a fact. Some part of the dungeon was really redundant like the ship grave, sewage and especially both of the Hojo's labs. Was all of these necessary? Did any of the dungeons I've listed developed a major character development like the Jesse's arc? No would be the answer. Sure there were some interactions, but all of them could've been done on different area, I could just skip or cut the whole dungeon part and I would see no difference on story progression from before and after entering the dungeon. Hojo's lab was the worst, because you learn absolutely nothing new as you progress the lab other than Hojo is a mad scientist, where in other news water is wet. Whether you like it or not, you get to know a lot more about Hojo after getting out of Midgar, so showing that this guy is a freak by making you go through useless dungeon is not a smart idea.

Second, the combat system. This is not a problem if you're on easy, but anywhere higher literally shows all the bad parts of the combat. The reason is the amount of attack from the enemies can be really annoying, like you getting attacked in middle of healing immediately cancels the animation for whatever reason. Not only that, the game won't give you back the gauge you have spend on the action to cast the spell and I think that's disgustingly unfair considering all the enemies on late game have super-armor (unless you stagger them but that's not the problem). Another thing is that I hate how some of the attacks can be unfair where it's nearly unavoidable. If there is an dodge mechanic, wouldn't it make sense to have certain amount of frame that gives you invincibility? Take a look at monster hunter for this one, it makes you feel fair if the game gives you the chance of not taking any damage, but the remake doesn't. They make you eat all the damages without giving you a chance of getting up. even guarding won't reduce the damage a lot. In hard mode, all of these gets worse plus even the weak ones are took too long to beat, which made me gave up on hard run due to it being a waste of time.

Third, the whispers. Why do these exists? They only made the story more annoying to look at the moment you know what these things are, especially the beginning. Doesn't matter if they play a major role on the sequel, this is not the kind of things you want that never existed on the first place. If they really meant for a build up, then they could've at least made a new character instead of making a swarm of gross looking ghosts.

Fourth, take this as my nitpick, music. Half of them were good/okay, the other half was a shame towards Nobuo Uematsu's original musics. Like the Jenova's theme was exactly I expected and I loved it. I also kind of liked the airbuster's version of "those who fight further", but the rest of the versions of " were terrible, they don't sound like the original in terms of epicness (like not including the electric guitar). The wall market's theme got changed instead of the very fitting 'oppressed people'. If you like them, fine, this is my opinion after all.

The positives are the environment being top notch, really makes you grasp how it feels like to live in Midgar. Looking forward to the remake version of Junon, Cosmo Canyon, Forgotten Capital and Wutai. The turks were also what I've expected, loving those dudes including Rufus so far. I don't know if the devs will ever include the rest of the turks, but I would really love to see them.

I'll be evaluating this game mostly as a product on its own, but it needs to be said that the atmosphere, enviroments and characters of the original FFVII are given new, spectacular life thanks to the massive technological advancements that the game industry has made since 1997.
The narrows streets of the lively slums and the ominous industrial landscapes of Midgar can now be explored and witnessed with a realism that was once impossible, Cloud and the others now display a more rounded personality and deeper character thanks to the aid that voice acting and facial animations provide when making these fictional inidviduals feel more real (mostly thanks to the spectacularly written dialogues: these characters often speak to each other with such realistic demeanor, empathy and wit that you could mistake them for actual people), just as the new areas of the city and backstories give more personality to certain cast members and expand on the worldbuilding of the original. Even the soundtrack, once limited by the sound chip of the PlayStation, can now explode in its orchestral glory, surpassing the original. Every single aspect of the original game finds here a bigger, more decorated stage to perform on, without losing any of its original flare and instead having more room to convey itself. In that sense, yes: FFVII Remake is more FFVII than FFVII itself could ever be, at its time. And yet, in the final story beats of the game, although the presentation never fails, the screenplay and writing do, faltering here and there with abrupt tonal shifts and protagonists acting out of character to accomodate the story, mostly when the writers try to toy with the original script a little. But let's move on to the gameplay.
If we compare the gameplay to a coin, we have two sides: Level Design and Combat.
Final Fantasy 7 Remake's Level Design is quite underwheling, and it's mostly due to its painful linearity. There are small detours here and there, but they are all so inconsequential and minute that in the end it stll very much feels like you're funnelled through Midgar on a narrow path. There are pleasant exceptions, mosty when exploring towns (like the labyrinthian Wall Market), but they are exceptions. The one aggravating element that makes this even worse are the slow, sluggish animations. Cloud takes such a long time to climb ladders, slowly bend to open chests, press a button or swinging on monkey bars it's soporific. Some of these may be a way to hide loading screens, but some others can't be and are just a waste of time.
Thankfully, walking and exploring it's not what we'll be mostly doing: that would be fighting.
And the Combat of Final Fantasy 7 Remake is, simply put, better than the original game.
This is not due to the shift from Turn-Based to Action: a Turn-Based game can be just as engrossing as an Action game, but the original game had some issues that hindered the overall experience that this game doesn't have, be it for its Action game nature or clever design choices.
Firstly: one of the main flaws of the original is how every party member felt the same, since Materia is the main pillar of Combat, and every character can have every Materia, so they all felt like the same exact character in battle. Here, every character has its own Combos, with different range, speed and mechanics during fights which completely changes how you approach the enemy. On top of that, each character has a specific set of Abilities unique to them, unlocked through different weapons (which in turn incentivizes the player to try out every weapon), maybe some Abilities feel way too smiliar and plain, but overall it's a pretty solid array of techniques. Speaking of weapons, now every weapon has its own skill tree that can be upgraded. Every weapon has a different skill tree which leads to different builds for different situations. This way, not a single weapon truly becomes obsolete. The only real downside of Combat are Aerial Combos, which feel extremely sluggish and clunky, mostly due to the lack of options given to the player on air unlike games like Kingdom Hearts.
The Enemy Roster, as well, is spectacular. So many different varieties of enemies with different movement and attack patterns, elemental weaknesses and weak points to find, since now enemies, and especially bosses, have different body parts to attack, which can affect the flow of battle, offering even more strategic options.
Or, in other words: FFVII Remake tells a part of the same story that was told 23 years ago, only with more passion and more believable characters, but the exact same spirit, making only a couple missteps, especially in the end. The Level Design leaves much to be desired, but the strategic depth and variety of options in Combat, strengthened by the sensational bosses and enemies offered by the main story, side-quests and challenges, makes FFVII Remake substantially better than the original, as far as gameplay.

As a third person blend of real-time combat mixed with some menu-based decision making, Final Fantasy VII Remake is a masterclass in gorgeous graphics, excellent characters, memorable and breath-taking music, and a gripping story. Gorgeous Square Enix-esque cutscenes glue together this rather long winded game. When the story here is good, it’s fantastic. Boss fights are well-crafted, and abilities have plenty of weight and impact to make you feel like your attacks are doing serious damage. At the same time, however, there are far too many instances in the game in which these very same cutscenes display very clear signs of game-padding (any of those factory missions in which your traveling between platforms labeled with various letters.) In terms of content, this game’s story is only a fraction of what it’s original version was. However, I never felt it detract from my experience too much.

Even as a part of such a large franchise, FFVII remake is an excellent standalone title, and I can legitimately recommend it to any and all gamers looking for a thrilling story and gameplay experience.

Fights are insanely difficult with an artificial difficulty added in that makes hard mode impossible to stomach (infinite sleep or stun, one hit KOs followed by poke attacks while sleeping, bosses have way too much health that it can take 30 minutes for a fight). Absolute trash.

The music is an embarrassment to the series, how do people say this is good?? It sounds like generic Avengers type of trash that you see on every triple A game now, and yet the original was so unique?

All of the dungeons are just hallways you run forward and encounter enemies maybe, and the entirety of the story (that which wasn't changed into whacky wohoo time traveling ghosts and parallel dimensions) feels like filler content for a game that already was 80 hours long back in the PS1. This is the ultimate, low effort cashgrab, and people out there actually consider this a masterpiece. Embarrassing.

My main complaints: the plot and dialogues could be better (they were not interesting), voices in English didn't match with the mouths (I don't know if in Japanese does), everything takes place in the same city (you won't see green). Doesn't end: leaves you at the same place you started without knowing much unless you later search on the Internet. Quite disappointed. Lucky me I just borrowed it. The game is great even when it is not adding much new to the story or FF7 history. But it fills in the space between, makes it a more living world, gives more depth to the characters and surrounding world. It looks and feels great. I like the new combat system and the fantastic graphics. I am eager to see Yuffie soon ;)

Final Fantasy was a series I didn't know how to approach, and it always seemed not for me, that was until FF7 Remake.

This is one of the few games that made me cry, with the engaging story, memorable characters, interesting world and flued and fun gameplay/combat, it was amazing. I have nothing but praise, and i could go on for hours. Easy, easy to recommended.

Had my reservations with this as I'm an OG FFVII player who wanted the turn based combat to remain, but pleasantly surprised I enjoyed the new style. Story was good & more detailed than the original.
The only downside is the combat got a bit repetitive at times, especially going through that underground tunnel. Highly recommend though to anyone sitting on the fence.

Not really a big fan of JRPGs, which brings the score down for me. Fun gameplay, great soundtrack and interesting story, but the somewhat anime-like dialogues and character behaviour in cutscenes is a tough pill to swallow.

For anyone on the fence: try the demo. It's free and takes about an hour. If you don't like the demo, you won't like the rest of the game because although the gameplay is varied and there is more story, I cannot honestly say it's all that different.

    How to play:

    - Do it on easy first; meaning finish the game on Easy.
    - Then come back on Chapter select and do the whole game on normal and you'll be geared up and at level 50 by this point.
    - If you have any end-game grind - like getting summons, getting weapon skills, or tomes - do it on easy.

    - Then (and only then) you should try hard mode. Hard more is quite challenging and requires some expertise/mastery of the game's systems and mechanics. It is NOT for casual players.

It's been proven countless times in games, companions should be irrelevant for the outcome of a fight, they're cosmetics and support. Having a party can only work with turn based games, or games where you can pause the action and issue individual commands every second. This kind of real-time mixed with turn trend that started with FF12 is HORRIBLE and BROKEN beyond belief. The same issue I had with FF12, FF13 and FF15, I have it here: companions just keep killing themselves over and over, doing absolutely nothing unless you switch like crazy between them issuing order, which distracts from the fight. Sometimes they're so far away from the enemies that you wonder what the f.ck is going on with the AI.

Shameless money grab, not really a good game.

Everything that's been fleshed out is pure filler nothing that's been added is good or worth anyone's time. It's literally just loads more wandering down linear corridors that don't even look pretty to the point where the story is near impossible to follow. The gaps between important events in the game are spread way too far apart.

Its more like a walking simulator like say death stranding without the graphics than the original ff7. Everything is such a chore endless fetch it quests childish dialog which wasn't present in the original.

Its like the whole thing got beaten by a PC culture stick.

The original had you dying to find out the mystery of sephiroth. This game re-writes the main things that kept the original interesting by giving sephiroth to much of a role too early........ throughout the original you were dying to work out what was going on with sephiroth is he good or bad he was talked up so much before you interacted with him and then when you did it had a huge impact..... all of this is removed

And it isn't in such an unacceptable way that I felt the to write it down here, as my first review.

Let's start with what they haven't botched:
    the graphics (well, mostly)
and some parts of the story.
    Especially Shinra Tower was nice.
I even almost thought about forgiving what the game did to me.

But now on to the longer list of things that are absolutely insufferable:

The battle system is completely borked.
You are basically just button mashing until you win,
with little rhyme or reason to it.
    It's no fun.
    No, non at all.

It isn't really helped by the fact that many enemies are absolute hit sponges.
It is just an absolute joke.
Just that no one is laughing.

The fact that there are *lengthy* enemy-filled and otherwise uneventful corridors *everywhere* doesn't help things.

On to the story (which was the only reason I kept playing):

    There are stupid ghosts.
    everywhere.
    Which contribute nothing
    nothing to the actual plot.
    They are annoying.
    properly annoying.
    But they serve
    server to foreshadow
    the end of the story

    which is an absolute mess.

It is on a level of clusterf*** that is hard to describe. - Imagine Game of Thrones last season but with the authors high on something significantly worse than LSD. I have not yet seen such an obscene amount of bullsh*ttery in a single place, in a single 20 minutes.

Do yourself a favor and do not get to the ending. You do not want so see it. It is just. Urghh.
Even if you make it through the 30 hours of padding before it: Just quit as long as you can.

The conclusion: If you want to suffer through 40 hours of mostly hoping the game would end, then this game is for you. And if you like gigantic letdowns.

And in all honesty I have no idea where all those good reviews on here (or in general) come from. - They have to be majorly blinded by nostalgia, actively trying to get rid of their time or being paid for their opinion.

    1. All the grunts and head nods within conversations are not how people talk. The conversations are very cringe.

    2. I understand Cloud is more serious and cold, but this game made him seem mentally retarded.

    3. Is Tifa Cloud's love or not? From this story, it doesn't seem like it. And neither is Areth. I'm so confused.

    4. Most of the levels of the game are boring.

    5. Most of the side quests are pathetic and boring. Who the hell thought it would be fun chasing cats?

    6. Minigames are alright, but still not that fun.

    7. Items and Materia...etc. are whatever. I still don't understand how things work.

    8. Can I have one boss fight without some bs cinematic interruption? Ffs.

    9. Replay value: 0.

NothingFinal Fantasy is one of those series that makes me throw up my hands and ask “why do people like this so much?” Can you even call this game an RPG? I know its a JRPG but think about what that means. When in the game can you say you are playing a role? The player has no options to make decisions other than which weapons to upgrade. Many of the important cutscenes are pre-rendered. Nothing the player does matters. As story based beat-em-up, Final Fantasy VII is fine. The game has its audience and new players might really enjoy the game play and story.

My biggest complaint with JRPGs is that the player has little to do except hit “X”. Sometimes a mini-game will require hitting all the buttons. There is a wide safety net that prevents failure but also little opportunity to innovate. In Final Fantasy VII, the player starts with very little agency. Combat in the early game is easy, but also tedious, like a chore that must be done to progress between cutscenes. By the end, combat opens up with greater options. You can combine magical abilities like linking some magic attacks to stealing enemy’s health. Still, the options are severely limited, and the number of cheap enemy attacks will guide the player to builds that prioritize player health. The player also has no agency over the composition of the parties. You get what you get and that is it.

Combat itself is at least more satisfying than Final Fantasy XV. You can cycle through different characters who really feel like they play differently. Cloud is rather slow but his ridiculously large sword provides the best blocking. Tifa moves very quickly in and out of danger but is susceptible to the enemy’s cheapest attacks. Barret can fire from a distance and is best left as a background character who won’t take the enemy’s attention. Combat feels like a JRPG, though. You won’t be rolling around and pulling off special moves like Ninja Gaiden. Some of the enemy attacks seem unavoidable. Maybe my 40+ years have dulled my reflexes too much. Maybe a remake of a 1990s game should consider the age of its audience.

Full disclosure, I never played the original Final Fantasy VII. I certainly had opportunity. My brother once had a PlayStation, there was a great PS1 emulator for PC, and many ports of the game have been on various platforms since then. The problem is my obvious bias against the JRPG genre. This game slightly moves the needle away from that bias. Some of the mini-games are interested and the motorcycle combat sequences were a nice break from the usual combat. You cannot simply grind levels and hit “X” to win. Some fights were lost on the first run as I learned how to counter the enemy’s cheapest attacks. The game has some semblance of combining real time action with classic JPRG strategy. Like I said, this was a step-up from Final Fantasy XV. For JRPG fans, this my be the best of the JRPG games.

Just one last point on the graphics and quality of gameplay. The characters and world enter the uncanny valley territory. Some of the character models are incredibly over the top. At one point you see a brief glimpse of a cartoon cat with a cape. Most of the character models are realistic looking people (who have 1% body fat). The same is true of the background. You see overly designed industrial areas beside realistic looking vehicles and buildings. The whole world has that uncanny valley feeling. These people live with the every day danger monsters in single city country surrounded by a wasteland and yet somehow they have an industry that supports all manner of contemporary consumer goods. The premise probably made more sense with the blocky textures of the original PS1 game.

All-in-all the game offers a lot of content and I do appreciate the effort than went into it. My play through was almost 40 hours and I only skipped a few of the side missions. The problem is simply my own personal conflict with the genre.

I want to start this review off by stating that I have never played a FF game before this one, including the original. Therefore, I'm reviewing this game as if it was in a vacuum, essentially not if it was faithful to the original or not.

    With that being said...

This game is absolutely fantastic. Totally worth the purchase price and it comes with a 30+ hour story that consists of only the first third of the entire game. Speaking of which, the story was absolutely fantastic and drew me in on an emotional level that I had never really experienced with any other game before. All of the characters were incredibly intriguing I and loved watching their connections develop. The voice acting is superb, and the graphics are absolutely phenomenal.

I adore the combat system, and how mechanical skill can play a contributing factor to the fight as a whole. I went into this game thinking it would be a turn based RPG, but was pleasantly surprised to find a combat system which allowed the player to dictate the pacing of the fight. New Materia and Weapon Abilities can be unlocked as well, allowing you to customize your party members to fight in the way that you want them to, which allows for a great deal of experimentation.

I also want to address some of the more negative reviews I have read on the site. First of all, I see many people claim that the sidequests are just "boring filler" and do not actually contribute anything of note to the game. While they are very surface level and boring at times, it is crucial to understand that these sidequests are completely o p t i o n a l. The player is in no way forced to complete these missions, aside from 2 or 3 in Chapter 9, but that's it. Their sole purpose is to determine a couple of different cutscenes and outfits you can obtain later in the game, so if that doesn't sound important to you then don't bother. I completed all of them my first playthrough, and while boring, doing every single one in a chapter never took more than an hour at most.

Secondly, many people have brought up the issue of grinding for EXP, and my response to that would be...what game are you playing? I never once encountered a fight which seemed too difficult to overcome which forced me to go out and grind my character's levels (on Normal and Hard difficulty). If you're struggling that much with a particular battle, you need to maybe try and play around your party's strengths and weaknesses to a greater level, or dare I say it, just get better at the game. Again, your mechanical skill and knowledge of the fight is incredibly important in this game, and if that's something you need to improve then so be it.

Overall, I adore this game. the more and more I think about it, I start to realize that what makes this game so good is that you really feel like the hero of this world, and I think many games of the same style today fail to capture that. Cloud as a character is more than enough to convey that, but when you start to uncover the relationships he forms with the characters around him, it's more whole, more real. I have no idea how this game compares to its predecessor, but judging it as a standalone title, I cannot recommend it enough. This game is fantastic. I'm excited for Part 2.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. FF 7 Remake is by no means a bad game. Nostalgic story from a quarter century ago, updated action combat system, above average graphics, remix of memorable music are all elements that put this game on solid ground. Unfortunately, there are just way tooo much filler content that don’t add to the story, and/or just plainly make no sense. While the Jessie story is not bad, how the characters seemingly forget about all those hooded ghosts immediately after they have taken over the whole slum shows a failure to integrate the new material into the original story. Shouldn’t Barret, who blames Shinra for all the wrong in the world, at least conjecture that the ghosts are Shinra’s doing or related somehow to the mako depleted planet? Many of the maps are large but so linear and so illogically designed that they feel unbelievable and unimmersible. The NPCs are robotic and annoyingly repeating the same line endlessly (in the original, at least they didn’t repeat that line unless you actively talked to them). In the misguided attempt to expand Midgar, Square Enix has sadly made it more restrictive and smaller, also more illogical and less believable. In the age of Witcher 3 and Red Dead Redemption 2, FF 7 Remake’s world is already obsolete as soon as it is updated. When the original Final Fantasy VII came out in 1997, it set a new benchmark for that generation of games. The Remake, unfortunately, doesn’t measure up to the ones in the present generation. Expand

A thrilling, audiovisually artfully staged masterpiece packed with loving character moments (emotions) and great fights as well as high NewGame+ replay value (chapter selection).

The story twists allow for unpredictable storylines that I'm completely open to. = I'm really glad this is a story continuation based on the original game experience and not a simple 1:1 remaster. I hope our heroes and heroines can reshape/remake the future for the better - as the original ending was way too bleak and tragic for me. (Hopefully the ending can be shaped based on player decisions).

Part one of the FF7 remake already gave me one of the best gaming experiences I've had in my life. I love the soundtrack, the characters, their design and story interactions with each other, and also the new real-time group combat system.
The few texture issues should be gone with the PS5 upgrade. (I have yet to replay the game on that system).

Down-sides; I wish, there was an official costume option for the characters. ^^
There are 4 costumes for Aerith, Tifa and Cloud - but only cheat modules enable you to wear them outside of the indended scenes - PS4.
And I would also have liked an option to turn off the green filter during the slow-mo skill selection. (I prefer the original colors).

So far, I've replayed the game 4 times in 3 different languages, and I can't wait for the next installments. I simply want to spend more quality time with the characters I adore - and I thus also appreciate the decision to make this story bigger. And I also couldn't have wished for a better fight system. There's room for improvements (group dynamic / espers / air combat) - but it's nonetheless my fav among all rpgs. 10/10

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Though not perfect, Final Fantasy 7 Remake delivers on remaking the jrpg icon and adding its own spice, however not all of these changes and additions are necessarily good. To start things off, lets discuss the Whispers, ghost-like entities and Arbiters of Fate that interrupt the story and only ever serve to disrupt, while I can appreciate the 'Fanon' explanation that they're representations of the fans, trying desperately to stop Square from making any changes and keep the game as close to the original as possible, the Whispers themselves are nothing short of nuisances, they show up randomly to slow down the game and remind you **** different". I can only hope Cloud and Co killing their boss at the end is a meta commentary saying "screw the fans, we're doing what we want" And we won't be seeing them again.

Moving on from that, the other changes this game makes are mostly all very nice, like mission you go on with Jessie, Biggs and Wedge, in this short section, you team up with aforementioned characters and venture to the Sector 7 plate to Jessies house so that you can get a Shinra keycard and infiltrate one of their bases, this section alone includes character development for Jessie, a pretty fun Bike sequence, a new character who I love named Roche, a pretty fun action scene where Biggs and Wedge both have their time to shine in combat, and development between Cloud and his Avalanche buddies, we also see that Avalanche is a far bigger organization that in the original, having multiple Sects, some of which are very well outfitted with military equipment, unlike Barrets group who've always been very ragtag.

Among the good however, there is always bad, and unfortunately, there is a scene which has gained my ire, not for its content, but its placement. Much like the original, after being thrown into the sewers by Corneo, you must pass the Train Graveyard, unlike the original however, it's far too long and tonally feels very out of place, given Tifas anxiety over Shinra dropping the sector 7 plate, which seems totally dropped in this section, and awkwardly picked back up immediately after, it feels odd and out of place.

To roll things back a little to when I mentioned Corneo, the Wall Market scene is pure bliss, I loved every second of this part, from Aeriths amazing dialogue, where she requests "permission to kill" when Corneo's men are speaking about her looks, to the Coliseum where you fight The Monster House in a boss fight, and finally to the dance minigame which had me smiling from ear to ear the entire time. I'm certain they knew how much everybody loved the scene where Cloud is forced to put on a dress and they went ham on it to make it an absolute spectacle, and they succeeded.

On to the characters, they're amazing, new and old. returning favourites like Barret, Tifa and Aerith are filled with love and care, I already loved these characters, but I'll be damned if this game didn't increase my love for them tenfold, absolutely amazing. Even side characters like Jessie, Biggs and Wedge have been given new life, what were once characters who existed only to die during the Sector 7 Plate incident, are now fully fleshed out people with a range of emotions, and in Biggs' and Jessies cases, a REALLY hot redesign. There are even new characters who are just as loveable, like Leslie, a Corneo grunt who's secretly trying to get back at Corneo for making Leslie's fiancée his bride and her subsequent disappearance, there's then the new Trio of people needed to gain access to Corneo, Madam M, Sam and Andrea Rhodea, the final of which is my personal favourite, even the Squatting guys are given this treatment with a new character named Jules, then there's Tifas landlady, The Angel of the Slums and her granddaughter Kyrie, Johnny, there's simply too many to count, and they're all so entertaining, they make Side Activities worth the trouble.

Lastly I need to be a Grinch again, because I did not enjoy the gameplay here, more specifically the Combat, and the sole reason my score isn't higher. The combat in this game is dreadful, it may trick you initially into thinking it's fun because of how visually stunning it is, complete with insane particle effects and bright vibrant colours, but by the end you'll realize how shallow and boring it really is. For starters, let's discuss the Dodge... why is it even there? It's largely useless and I spent the better half of my 30 hour run trying in vain to dodge attacks, I later found out I was simply doing it wrong, apparently the Dodge is for big boss attacks and for regular fights you're meant to use the Block, the Block... does not Block, you still take damage, just kind of reduced. Cloud has a unique ability to Counter, but using it makes you incredibly slow and vulnerable to ranged attacks. Then there's stun lock... it's everywhere... Screw stun lock.

Overall a good game far from perfect but worth your time. Also Zack :)

Expand

Your "adventuring" is reduced to mostly claustrophobic "hallways" and being forced along the narrative path.

Every action in combat requires a portion of an ATB gauge--including using items. Enemies will spam cheesy attack after cheesy attack. Your allies' AI is unreliable at best, and managing a full party in the heat of battle is beyond tedious. It feels like the devs couldn't decide between real-time action and turn-based tactics, so they mashed them together in the worst way. Ugh.

The visuals range from beautiful vistas and character details to fugly low-res textures--often within the same scene. The voice-acting is decent, but the cringe-worthy writing could cause even the most hardcore anime fan to wince. Music and sound effects are functional, but almost entirely forgettable.

The nostalgia factor wears off after the first few hours, leaving the mediocrity plain to see for anyone not wearing rose-tinted glasses and neck-deep in denial. Seriously--I loved playing through the original FF7 no less than three times, but trudging through this slog is a test of willpower.

FF7R has its moments, but all too often descends into long stretches of exposition dotted with a few chaotic battles and large quantities of fanboy filler. I only played it because it was free through PS Plus. Wait for a sale.

I was excited for a 5th one to be introduced towards the end, but he's not playable. RIGHT WHEN IT WAS GETTING REALLY STALE. So frustrating.

As for the story, it's garbage. I played ff7 for the first time as an adult, so there's not a nostalgia bias. It was pretty **** but it kept things moving. This game is the Hobbit of videogames. It takes every moment of the original and drags it out until it's completely over the top and utterly boring at the same time. The best word to describe the entire story is "arbitrary." You're constantly killing bosses who dominate you in the cutscene after you beat them, and they're constantly killing off characters and bringing them back. I was so happy when they finally killed these annoying ass characters. The disappointment at seeing the WORST of them come back in the story really ruined my day. Cloud can jump 30 feet, 5 times in a row, but he can't step over a 3 foot barrier. Every path is utterly linear and boring as hell. You shimmy through more than 100 narrow corridors for no reason. Who wants to shimmy slowly through narrow corridors? Who thought this was a fun gameplay element?

The worst part of the game is really the dialogue. I would forgive the stale combat and **** story for the cool aesthetics, but these aesthetics are utterly ruined by the D-tier anime writing in this game. The voice actors are actually good too. It's the bottom of the barrel anime writing that kills the vibe. The game is so horny; it is so painful. I would really be embarrassed to play this in front of anyone I know. It's as bad as a harem anime. The original was not like this. It was its own sort of nuts, but it wasn't this cringy. I can honestly say I did not enjoy a plot point from beginning to end. I kept expecting something to happen. I enjoyed plenty of other Final Fantasy moments, FF10, FF8, even poor FF12 had a couple of decent scenes. There was SO much new stuff added on from the original, but NONE of it is good enough to justify this remake.

Obviously, a ton of people loved this game. I really can't explain it except that they must watch some awful anime, that this type of writing seems acceptable. Or they're really horny for the characters. I dunno. I haven't met a single person in real life.

I finished it just in case it pulled something out of its ass at the end. It only got worse and more arbitrary as it went along. I will not be playing the sequels.

Final Fantasy VII Remake is the game we've been waiting for from Square Enix for so long. Atmospheric, interesting and exciting all your attention modern jRPG with an interesting story and spectacular battles. To achieve the ideal, the project only needs more even graphics and all the content from the original release. If you were waiting for a turn-based classic with new graphics you will most likely be disappointed, since the game has changed a lot. Everyone else is happy with the release of the first really powerful single-player release from the internal Square Enix studio for many years. Especially after the failure of Final Fantasy XV.

A good remake of the introductory part of the cult-favorite Final Fantasy VII. It improves on the original game in almost all aspects, yet lacks in scale and drops the ball at the very end.

What matters is still intact, and that’s the heart and soul of one of the greatest stories in video game history. It’s a return to form that has felt a long time in coming, and what’s even better is that there’s still at least two more games of this quality to come...They can’t mess this up, can they?
