I’ll be honest, I’ve never fully played a Final Fantasy game before, not even the original FF7. So for me to be gripped by the narrative this hard even with no prior experience with any other FF or the original, going in blind, says A LOT about this game’s ambitions! It’s far from perfect however. I was expecting a long game going in (got done in about 22 hours which is long for me considering I skipped almost every sidequest since my attention span is the same as a bird’s) but some of these chapters are extremely long compared to others. Chapter 17 is probably the longest of them & is the WORST thing to happen to my mental state since Doom Eternal’s Ancient Gods Part 2’s final boss. There’s no reason that chapter 17 has to be over 3 hours long & you can’t convince me otherwise. All of the slow walking parts also drove me up a wall after a few times of doing it, and you WILL be doing that A LOT in this game, not even for narrative purposes some of the time! *rolls eyes* Factor in that the last few hours is basically a boss rush, each one more annoying than the last, and after breezing through most of the game with no issues at all, it was a difficulty spike that I didn’t appreciate. Aside from the final fight though, that’s legitimately amazing & one of the BEST video game experiences I’ve had in a while. I’m still trembling from the adrenaline rush!! The game is also stunning visually all the way through & I didn’t drop a single frame while playing. I’m kinda annoyed that they decided to make this remake episodic though. I loved the story don’t get me wrong, but if I had to choose between a full remake of the original over fleshing out the first portion of it into its own game, I think I’d rather go with the former. Too late now obviously, it just sucks that we have to wait who knows how long between these episodes & how many that there will be before the ending. What I do know is that this game is great despite the bumps I encountered along the road, definitely recommend even if you’re a first time Final Fantasy player like myself! Expand

The gameplay, though not my favorite, is ok. It is fun to play with, has some strengths and weaknesses. I feel that the lack of possibility to change your materia during battle to be very counter strategic (mainly against bosses). Basically you can use the asses ability during the battle to know the strengths and weaknesses of your enemy, but that only tells you whether or not you are equipped to fight it or not, you can't adapt to the information. As a general rule, I just pushed through, whatever the information was, and if I got defeated I'd set my materia according to the knowledge I gained from the battle. This is not an elegant design.
Otherwise, the gameplay is fun. A bit rough on the edges, but it is fun.

The pace of the game is what is best in my opinion, it is like a long interactive cutscene. It is very entertaining. Though, my issue with it, is that it doesn't feel like a coherent story. It feels more like a series of "cool scene" and "cool pseudo philosophical speeches", but all the parts don't really fit together. Especially the escalation in the last chapter, where you go from C to W, but you skipped everything in between.
In my opinion, they should've kept the story centered on midgard, and just gradually hint at the bigger picture, rather than try to force feed it to you. The avalanche and helping Aerith storyline, are the parts I like best about this game. It's not that I don't want the epic proportion drama with Sephi and all, it's just that it made no sense in that part of the story. And honnestly, the whispers should just not be there. They're both a narrative cop-out on the designers part, and they just confuse everything behind the guise of being "to evolved" for you to understand.

Anyway. I still had fun playing it, at least the first time. Playing it again, kind of exposed the narrative flaws even more. Also the hard mode is not that fun (and for those among you who care, yes I did beat it, and only a few bosses gave me any real troubles). The way they added difficulty in the hard mode is by removing elements of gameplay, which I find is rather dull. Removing uses of items takes a system out of the game, and limiting your MP input kind make you not use magic all that much. It is harder, but not in a fun way.

I played FF7 Remake thanks to its inclusion in the PS Plus program. I initially appreciated it more than I had expected, but after a while, I started realizing that something was very wrong. In short, you get high production values but a very poor JRPG, with severely limited scope and derivative narration.
The graphics revamp is obviously welcome, with the 3D environments looking much better than the original 2D images, except when you see distant, pixellated panoramas. The semi-interactive battle system is more immersive than the original, turn-based active time battle. On the other hand, I quickly realized that turn-based strategy goes down the drain. Almost any enemy attack will stagger you, preventing you to complete any action, which means that casters like Aerith are heavily impaired when fighting multiple enemies. Say your team gets knocked out and your healer is the last man standing: chances are it's game over because she'll never manage to pull off a resurrection spell, with enemies concentrating on her. Also, if you can control one character at a time, team AI for the other two should be good. Here it’s abysmal, with your teammates doing practically nothing and getting hurt all the time.
Using a fighter is some fun, but not as much as it could be. You have a dodge move that is essentially useless, your combos cannot be cancelled and block has a huge delay. All in all, it's totally unresponsive, preventing any fast action from working. Finally, stunlock is definitely a thing with certain enemies. As an action melee game, FF7R fails miserably.
This is not its worst problem. The main issue is The Hobbit effect. What was once a very special game with a tightly knit story, relatable characters and a really special feel, has been artificially inflated to transform it into a 3-game epic, injecting filler content everywhere, and it suffers from the transformation. The original FF7 started exactly like this game: you are in Midgar City, battling the evil Shinra Corporation, and think you have it all figured out. After they pull a certain, horrible move, the perspective suddenly changes completely, the real game begins, the scope becomes huge and you realize you had only scratched the surface so far. In FF7R there is no such epiphany because the first game doesn’t get out of the small setup, which results in a very, very small game world and mundane side quests.
The story also suffers. In FF7, you could talk to a lot of people, and while most chatter was just that, sometimes you could get glimpses of background stories going on, lots of hidden gems. It’s kind of difficult to explain, but a certain character takes a liking to Cloud from the very start. In FF7, you had very few chances to actually interact with her, and yet these interactions were poignant, because my imagination would reconstruct what was left unsaid. In FF7R, it’s all spelled out loud, and becomes a badly written, run of the mill semi-romance of no consequence.
You get very, very few instances where you can decide what Cloud says. In FF7 you had a lot; many did not have real story consequences, but they were still part of what “my” Cloud was, they were role-playing in my view. Here, you just go through fixed dialogs 99% of the time.
    Other things I didn’t enjoy:
    - Bad, over the top acting. Stupid, evil laughter worked when it was text, irks when it’s voice.
    - Way too many special enemies. May be ok if you like bosses, but really, there are apparently more unique enemies than normal ones.
    - This is not Devil May Cry. Who figured that an idiotic, bombastic, superpowered, emo badass like Roche would fit in?
    - The ending. Bloody hell, talk about making it five times as long as it should have been! It’s a putrid slog through annoying, unsatisfying, inconclusive fights that drag on forever.
All in all, I’m glad I didn’t pay for the game.

I remember buying the Original Title back in the days on PC and how much I Süd- to love the franchise. This is a huge makeover and a great piece of work. I guess I am really waiting for a Title like this with a new Story line, because the overall story is not as catchy as the battle system , graphics and sound. But who knows, maybe the next FF will do the Trick for me.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view.

Even by JRPG standards, this game's story would be weird and convoluted. But I guess you can never doubt Nomuras ability to turn a straightforward and well written story into a bloated mess.

On its own merits, I'd put it pretty much exactly on par with Jedi: Fallen Order. Both are exceptionally polished, great looking, bug-free, and otherwise entirely forgettable games. If you're a FF fanboy/fangirl then I am sure you will absolutely love or hate it for some reason I don't care about.

Voice actors bring classic hero’s alive a new. Brianne White as Voice of Aerith is one to remember.

We see character development to them and classic scenes are there and now they deepen them more. Rest of Avalance get more time. Some of the chapters in story could have been shorten and something else added. But that is my view.

Plot is almost the same, but at the end comes the twist. That worries me, but I see what they intended with it. Now they are free to take story at new direction?
That was bold move, I don't know what to think about it, so I hold my judgement until next part.

Guess I am worried what SquareEnix is going to do in next.

Mayby this will crash train we are in, like many other old franchise (Star Wars, Star Trek or Last of Us)

But guess we can hope that we stay in track. I wait next part quite interested.

This one just seemed like it would be a run around and listen to potion bottle clinging together with annoying foot patter sounds then fight a few enemies and continue. Lack of builds and customization hand holding . Dumb maps. Man i am so tired of that map design in games. Just not my type of game. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Coming from a long time FF original series fan, this game doesn’t quite add up to the original FF7. First I couldn’t truly connect to the characters as before, plus the music is more “noisy” bkg filler. The gorgeous FF7 soundtrack is lost or barely heard. It only covers Midgar and introduces new characters too quickly. The mystery of Sephiroth is overplayed and much like the movie instead of the game. The story is jumbled or forced and not laid out smoothly or gradually. It’s replay value is ok. But you have to play by chapter not by free form as the original.

Jenovah is fought too soon. It was a climax and surprise to learn of her. Plus you had to go to the meteor crash to find her. It’s like they jumbled the whole game into Midgar at once. No free world exploration.

Oh and Sephiroth was not a one winged angel, he had many wings and was magnificently designed when he transformed. At least that music was close to the original. Oh and I hated that after each battle with main characters none of them actually died. Or most of them.

The fact of trophies and rewards for perfecting scenes or mini games were a bit annoying but this may be the new thing. I liked the logic puzzles and exploration bits to find powerful items not see how good you are at pushing buttons.

The dance at honey bee was fun but really wasn’t my thing. I tried a couple of times to perfect it but it was just not my taste of music or flamboyancy. To each there own. Seeing cloud in a dress was funny like the original. I’m glad they kept that.

I do still like the game but I miss the original feeling of FF7. I cried when “Aeris” died. That’s the emotion I was expecting n this remake. Of course it’s only part of the game but I may not buy the other parts as I assume they’ll only get worse for greed and speed of production through anticipation or lack of funding. That’s only a guess. I’ll wait and see.

Im a big Final Fantasy Fan. but my first part was the 8th. so the remake of Part 7 was new to me. the graphics are very nice, apart from minor blemishes. The gameplay is a perfect mix of the new parts with the original game. I love the music and the sound. only the German language could have been a little better, it's mainly about the children's voices.

There is a tiny bit of filler in some sections and the side quests aren't important at all but I didn't mind it, because the game focuses mostly on telling the story, which is completely fine. The gameplay mechanics are incredible, the mix of Real Time Action and Turn Based Combat work perfectly in this game and the materia system is amazing, very easy to use, makes the combat so much more unique and satisfying. So what did the Remake improve upon the original game except from the gameplay? Well, the characters are way better, they have more personality and development and they are more likeable. Many sections such as the Wall Market or Shinra Building include more cutscenes and are bigger than before, making them more fresh and modern, and they are just so awesome. This game feels so magical and nostalgic, it's like watching a spectacular animated movie, with breathtaking cutscenes and fantastic music playing in the background. This combined with the unnecessary dull minigames, which ate also forced takes away every illusion of freedom.
Pairing this with the ATB Action combat the devs chose to go with makes the game a horrendous mess. Action combat itself was a great choice for the remake, as it's Story is action packed with the main group being literal eco-terrorists. However the decision to, yet again, force the ATB into the game ruins the entire immersion. Combat feels like a weird mix between classic rpg and modern hack and slash. But it does not work. Pairing this with the idea that almost every enemy can either disable or stunlock a character and the messy status ailment system made the combat a chore.

FF 7 re is a mess that is plagued by weird and to be honest straight up dumb design choices. And is yet another prime example of SquareSofts biggest flaw. All graphics no substance.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. A good game, but it had the potential to be a masterpiece. Unfortunately, it appears that corporate greed has prevented this from reaching its full potential.

The voice-acting is near perfection and I enjoyed the fleshed out dialogue between the main characters, accurately depicting their personalities and bringing their character development to a new level. They clearly put a lot of work in the presentation of the story. The combat is fun. I do enjoy that each character has their own unique core abilities and it does make for a more dynamic experience, but the materia system does seem a bit out of place here. The soundtrack is mostly very good with arrangements that add intensity to the major battles.

But what makes this game less than great, and merely a good game, is the blatant padding. A significant portion of the 40 hours I played were spent doing fetch quests and backtracking through places looking for quest objectives. As many others have pointed out, most of these quests add nothing to the story and they do not give you any exciting items or provide you with rewarding challenges.

I also do feel that the ending of the game is taking the series in the wrong direction. I got the whole "power of friendship" anime vibe at the ending, and the game has already revealed Sephiroth to be a godly powerful being. In the original, by the time we leave Midgar, we know that Sephiroth is a skilled warrior, but we do not even begin to fully understand what he is until Cloud breaks the news to the party in Kalm, and we do not understand his godly power until we fight him at the end of the game. Also at the end, the party has already overcome forces that seem to be greater than most of Disc 2 in the original. If they can beat Destiny itself and put up a fight against Sephiroth in his one-winged form, then how the hell are Shinra going to pose a threat to them?

I do not think it was a good decision to release this game into multiple parts. It's going to kill the flow of the story and it will also make the transition into an open world much more awkward, if that is indeed their plan. Part of what made the original so great was exploring the world, that led to side quests which actually added to the story, provided new challenges, and rewarded you with lots of interesting items. This is not here in the first chapter of the remake, and I'm not sure how or if they will implement that in the next chapters. The only benefit to splitting this into multiple episodes is only for the company to make more money from it, and I feel that is precisely what Square Enix was aiming for with this release. What a shame.

In summary, this is proving to be an inferior project compared to the original game. I do feel it is still worth playing, but it could have been something far greater.

Convoluted story lines, multiple timelines and versions of character, alternate universes? It feels like it was written by a manchild who thinks these things are still cool and has not had any real life experiences...

Graphics - beautifully designed, models all highly nostalgic

Characters - nice designs as with graphics, visually this game is a masterpiece

Music - again a great job here and lots of nostalgic renditions of original pieces

    Cons:
Gameplay - the battle system is a huge downgrade from the original, if I wanted a hack and slash or press X as fast as you can many options such as devil may cry or kingdom hearts are available.

Story - every new introduction and change from the original is a bad idea, they all have a sense of "why the hell is this happening" and / or "who the hell is this??". This feel massively padded out at times and also it's rather linear, you could argue it is just midgar which in the original also is, but the argument that this was a "full game" cannot also take the cake and eat it. The whole time / dimension thing is a load of crap to try to appeal to all basis to give a sense that anything can happen - I don't like this at all and it's a real sellout. The biggest sellout of all though is the Sephiroth appearances, this shows zero build up to the character, he should not be seen at all throughout the entire midgar section, this along with the time displacement crap has ruined the story for me. I give it a 3/10 for the reasons above, a lot of effort and love went into this, but it was led astray from the very start and it's one of gaming's biggest disappointments for me ever, the original game is a solid 9.5/10 just for some context and I would argue if you're new to the game and characters, play the original and forget this mistake of a game.

A FF7 Remake was always going to be controversial, but my qualms with this game are little to do with authenticity or butchering. I'll explain below.

The graphics of this remake are top-tier and you can tell that's where monumental effort went into it. The character models are amazing and some of the scenery is spectacular. The downside is that the scenery (especially the latter half of the game) becomes very bland and greyscale. This could be a result of the setting of FF7 but I found it quite underwhelming to go through yet another grey building with a darkened interior. This I think relates to my issue of padding and filler.

The story is where the padding and filler is most noticeable. Despite being padded out with random and inane dialogue, the story still lacked coherency for me. Given that this is meant to be part one of a trilogy, it may become clearer in future instalments, but massive questions like who a person is, why they're doing this and how they know Cloud just left me baffled and unsatisfied.

The gameplay suffers from the dreaded filler issue also. Despite being achingly linear (in itself not a problem), the game still tells you to explore and do side-quests, most of which appear to be fetch quests which are just more filler content that I largely ignored.

Many of the levels suffer from antiquated designs, especially later in the game when you're constantly pulling levers and traversing elevators. One section with Tifa climbing across a ceiling had me nearly pulling my hair out from the ensuing boredom and tedium.

The combat is a very strange experience too. I found that higher difficulties just meant enemies become damage sponges - more padding I could do without. The materia concept wasn't very well executed either as it drains money very easily (and things in this game are stupidly expensive for some reason) as many enemies are not worth fighting without magic, meaning duplicated materia for additional costs. It's understandable they wanted a more dynamic and fast-paced combat system, but swapping out turn-based mechanics for this mish-mash seems to be the worst of both worlds.

Overall, this is a game that didn't need padding out and I am very reticent about buying the rest of the trilogy. It was very tough going to see this through to the credits but I wanted to make sure I wasn't missing anything. The final sections are enjoyable but by that point I just wanted the game to end. This is a hard game to recommend but it's worth finding out for yourself if it's your cup of tea,

However, the game does a good job explaining what is going on (most of the time). As soon as the whispers startedI got this game on ps plus and was pretty surprised by what i played. I haven't played the original (not all of it, i'm currently playing it to understand the remake a little more) game when i started playing the remake, so i started the game with 0 knowledge of final fantasy. However, the game does a good job explaining what is going on (most of the time). As soon as the whispers started to appear i was expecting an explanation but i didn't have one until the very ending. The story is very good, the characters are AMAZING and i love seeing them together. I like the character development of Cloud, he starts to care about things after a certain point in the game, and i like the contrast of his personality opposed to Jhessy, Aerith, Biggs, Wedge etc. I feel like their personalities influenced Cloud's throughout the game, specially Aerith's.
The combat is the best combat system that i remember. It is very fun and strategic. Sometimes, i felt like i was playing an anime fight due to how the characters act and speak during these fights. The combat is a mix of turn based with hack and slash. You press square and triangle to slash enemies and when pressing x, the time slows down and a menu with options such as magic and items appears. And it's cool bcause they keep talking in their heads even after the time freezes which gives the battle this anime feeling. The combat is suuuper fun, seriously. Btw you can switch between characters during the battle, and trust me, you will need to.
The A.I is ok i guess, the characters do a good job defending, but not that great when attacking the enemies. So when you expect to switch characters to see if they have enough atb to use, you will often see that they don't have, bcause you get atb by attacking the enemies.
The map is beautiful, specially indoors, but when it comes to sector 5 it gets really weird. There are low quality textures everywhere in sector 5 slums, which is weird to see, coz your character is super high quality with tons of polygons (srsly, it looks like a cgi character) but when you come closer to a wall of sector 5, there is this big contrast of quality, its like you're playing on a ps2 stage. But as i said, that happens only in sector 5 as far as i remember.
The music... man the music is a 10/10. My favorite is the one that plays in sector 5 when you're exploring the map.
    NOW WHAT BOTHERED ME:
The sidequests are meh, like ok, but not great. I feel that what saves the side quests is the combat itself that is super fun. I'd say that the greatest side quest in this game is compared to the most mediocre in Yakuza 0, which to be fair, is the case of 90% of games nowadays.
Another thing that bothered me was the overly anime way that the characters act. Sometimes feels unnatural, specially the anime grunting. I am used to anime, and it's ok if characters do that in Persona 5 for instance which is an anime game, but when you put this in a game where characters have human facial expressions it gets weird, specially the theatrical way Tifa moves sometimes, it's kinda cringy and childish. But this is a final fantasy thing after all, so its probably ok for the og fans.

Aside from the anime thing and the lack of good side quests, everything else was good or phenomenal. The boss fights are I N S A N E, the main missions are hype and the bond that is built with the avalanche members is really something special. The cut scenes in this games feel like a reward, bcause they are so well made and the dialogues were made with so much attention and care. Indeed, i liked this game so much that i bought the original on steam and started playing it. I played the whole Midgar section of the original, and seriously, what a great job they did with this remake, bcause in the original, you don't get to know 20% of these characters and world lore (through the Midgar section) and that makes me even more hyped about the next games, cuz if they did all what they did only in Midgar, which tbh, is the my least favorite part of the og game so far, imagine what they are going to do when the game expands! I can't wait. I give it a 9, the game is incredible but there are things that bother me a little.

Arbiter of Fates? Defying fate? Does the current SE even know what the original themes of FF7 were? How anyone thinks that the defying fate trope is not overused and written to death is beyond me

I think this game solidifies the fact that although SE make the best looking games in the industry they have the most convoluted, pathetic, childish stories. Their current story writers must have grown up on Anime and not had any real life experiences like the original team pre-merger.

Usually when I hate a game I just stop playing but something about this remake and in particular its fanbase kind of pissed me off enough to make an account and put a review.

If you loved pre 2003 FF games, you will hate this one. The shocking drop in quality of the story compared to FFX and earlier titles is so noticeable.

Was the music and sound good? Absolutely 10/10, final fantasy music has always been excellent and the Remake didn't disappoint.

An additional positive for me was the Hard Mode... I didn't know that I wanted that, but I did and it was great.

So why isn't it perfect 10/10? Nomura is a moron! Not only should he not be in charge of the story he should never be involved in the development of any game ever again. The mastermind behind the **** show that is Kingdom hearts has shat all over the story of FF7 which was already questionable at best and laughable at worst. The issue is the original FF7 story felt silly and grandiose, with certain moments being serious and others being satirical. Going all out on the story and characters being "Gritty and realistic" makes the laughable stuff seem insulting to the characters and story.

By the time this is all said and done it will likely make KH seem like a coherent and childish story. FF7 shouldn't be a shonen jump anime, but this is the beginning of that downfall.

    7/10 game for me.
Remaking and rebooting FF7 at the same time is a cool concept, and when everything clicks it really clicks. The train graveyard, the Corneo confrontation with Leslie, and the endgame section are real highlights.

I also think Sephiroth as a villain has lost a lot of his mystique and menace. He gets far too many close ups and flashbacks with no explanation as to who he is or what horrors he’s committed.
I am intrigued for what comes next though …

Storywise, this is my favorite that I've played in years, I was on the edge of my seat and am eagerly counting down the days until the next one releases! The graphics were truly impressive, especially the character models, but there were a few places that the textures got kind of wonky. The texture issues are the only thing that stopped me from giving it a 10. The voice acting was impressive, and I'm honestly attached to the characters and invested in what happens to them now.
I truly had an incredible time playing this, and being able to play the next one is my main reason to purchase the PS5. I'm planning on replaying this at least a couple of more times while I wait, and I think I'm going to check out more in the Final Fantasy series!

rilliant in parts but too much filler content.

Doing odd jobs for Tifa, the train graveyard, the dons henchmen side story and the stuff with hojo is there purely just to pad out the run time and makes the whole experience less enjoyable. If they had stuck with the original story they probably still could have split into two games and not taken away from the experience. Good for a one off

    - Although the japanese style of characterisation can feel a bit odd at first, you get used to it pretty quickly and really fall in love with the characters
    - The story offers a mostly great mix of seriousness and goofiness.

    Cons
    - The game has the tendency to drag on in certain sections. The natural flow of the story gets halted multiple times by obvious filler that really wasn't needed considering that the game is pretty long as it is.
    - There are a few levels where the music really gets on your nerves.
    - The platinum trophy forces you to replay the game multiple times which is always a major con in my book
    - The biggest con - at no point do you smash Tifa...

Overall a really great game that made me interested in the franchise and hyped to try other JRPGs.

P.S.: Big ups to Sony for the last few months of PS+ games. These are the types of games we expect and deserve as players - not throwaway indie games and B-level flops.

    Ok, the game is incredible.

I just couldnt rate it a 10, tho. There were some frustrating bugs here and there, weird textures at some houses and structures, a couple of decisions I couldnt understand why (like, wtf is this side quest map. "track this quest" just tracks where the NPC who gave you the quest is ????)
I know i may sound mad, but let me be clear that none of that ruined the experience. It barelly made a scratch, the game is awsome and I cant wait for the next part

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. What have they done?! Is it my romantic late childhood memory or just the fact that the original game was so much more intense than this ... „product“. As I first heard about the remake, I really couldn’t trust my ears, nearly zwo decades after releasing the original, there was announced what everyone wanted for years .. but with this wish, the look back at squares latest projects and the sky high expectations at this Remake, they had have just let it in retirement .. Absolutely nonsense story extensions, useless extended bossfights, with absolutely no demand for strategy, just button smashing, waaaay to silly story(moires? Really??) - they missed the original so much, they missed to create the atmosphere. The whole game feels like a tube level extended to the max, less content, worthless story extensions and the last 30% of the game consisting out of bossfights, which are even artificially stretched to the max. FF 7 is one of my all time favorites - I absolutely loved this game! But this remake isn’t worth, to be called a ff 7.. Maybe I’m a little bit too hard with my critics, but for me, this game is just disappointing. Expand

Nostalgia glasses aside (because, yes, I teared up when seeing Midgar and all the characters rendered so beautifully), this is a solid game, especially for the Final Fantasy franchise which somehow has become a better MMO developer than single player RPG developer.

I feel the FF franchise has just wanted to make movies, and a lot of the gameplay and cohesion suffer greatly because of that (since FFX). The Remake has a lot of that movie studio polish and a new battle engine, but I found it enjoyable and engaging for *most* of the run.

I have played this game almost 4 times through now and it has been out for almost 1 year. Where the game shines is the battle system, and how you can configure each character to your liking (though they still have their areas of excellence). Unfortunately the depth of the combat with weapons, accessories, and materia cannot be fully realized until Hard Mode is unlocked. I wish that depth could happen in a single play through, but I am no game developer and I wouldn't know how to make that happen.

Playing through again on Hard Mode is all about the battle system and getting the most out of your play style. The Normal mode (or Easy or Classic) is there to engross you in the story. If you look at it this way, I think it's rather nice. Story first, then putting nose to the grind stone with a stronger battle mode.

This game is far from perfect. Fortunately, or unfortunately, games lately, especially in the FF franchise, have been less than good. So the parts that are not great are still better or the same as other FF title issues.

Some issues are the padded quests. They can get a little annoying for sure. There are also the mandatory shuffle-through-tight-space events. Really unnecessary. The textures issue is egregious, but I am giving them the benefit of the doubt and hoping it is fixed for the PS5 release in June 2021. Another sad point is that one of the characters towards the end loses characterization and becomes the cryptic exposition machine that Square Enix loves. I want to give the game an 8.5, but since I cannot, I will give it a 9 for the magic it brought back to the characters and world of FF7.

One stellar part of the Remake is how they treat and characterize Cloud. Much better job than the original. And their handling of Wall Market and the transformation was so well done and very socially aware. I know a lot were worried about this portion and I can't think of a better way of handling it than they did in the game. Bravo FF7R team.

I am excited for the Yuffie DLC and the next installment.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. A bloated mess. The ending cutscenes are excellently animated and looked cool but the game wastes so much time with unnecessary bloat. It needed 15 hours cut out of it so it would be more streamlined and less of a chore. Don’t even get me started on the ending. It makes no sense, if you hadn’t played the original you’ll have no idea who Zack is. Also Cait Sith shows up for 3 seconds with no context and is never shown again. If I didn’t know who he was I’d be like wtf was that weird cat? Very disappointed. Annoying supporting characters too. Johnny is annoying af and Wedge is a walking fat joke with no substance. I seriously don’t understand why everyone is circle-derking over this, it hasn’t done the original justice at all and I didn’t even like the original that much but I know it was better than this.

As for the story it's rather confusing. I personally like some of the additions they've made but at the same time the plot seems to be very different this time around after experiencing the ending. I guess it's been done to make the next parts more justifiable to buy.

My only gripes with this game are the padding of areas made to extend your playtime and the sometimes lacklustre side quests. It's not enough to take the rating down however.

Let’s be clear with something: FF VII IS a good game. Nonetheless, it does have its flaws (what game doesn’t, anyway?)

If you see some early videos from 2015 and compare the final game, you can see that Square Enix did a serious effort to actually make a good game that lives up to the hype. When I first read this project would be lead by Tetsuya Nomura I could only prepare for the worst... Both FFXV and KH3 weren’t exactly a good game, in fact, both of them if they didn’t have the franchise name would be games nobody would played to begin with. So, when I first grabbed my control, and played the opening chapter was delighted to se that everything that was done bad in the past, this time was corrected.

Many complain about battle system and I can imagine it’s people that didn’t played FF XV (the first with real-time combat). Everything that had issues, it’s fully functional, even the use of magic and items and the fact that only pressing the attack button will make you die, so that you actually have to use your head to think what’s convenient for you speaks really well on the effort in this regard.

Oh the technical aspect, this game truly reaches the limit of PS4. Many textures really have bad quality, but the vast majority does not. Actually, the draw distance is IMMENSE and due to this many scenes have such an impact, also, the characters have so much detail so you can apréciate the effort to make them look so unique. Square Enix really took serious efforts in this regard, I do not particularly think graphics should be something to mention that much nowadays, but this game DO makes its pathway forwards recognition in this area. Every animation, scenario, cinematic, dialogue, OST is carefully crafted: there’s lots of quality in pretty much everything you see or do in this game. As I stated before since the first couple of trailers back on 2015 Square Enix had a clear idea on how to make this game, yet really polished the game so it would be so special.

What about the plot? It’s interesting, but sometimes I get the feeling that storytelling looses its path. Many things take its time to settle and/or make sense. Speaking of which: this game is relatively short (about 40 hours). it doesn’t even cover 1/3 of the original game, so it makes me wonder how much time it will take to actually see the full story on remake. Despite enjoying this game, it’s not the full story and this game took 5 years to finally hit the shelves... how many years will have to wait?

Another thing to mention is the fact that they’re selling this game again with some extra DLC... EXACTLY for this kind of things I rate this game with 9. This could be a 10 or the best game in the. Entire history, instead, we get a really good game.

Plot details side this game has buggy textures and the npcs look kinda bad. Moving on from that the game is filled with extermely tedious and entirely not fun segments. An insult to the original.
If you love mindless boring hallway running then this game is for you!
Sound engineers need sacking, terrible balance to the point you need subtitles on. Lip sync is the worst ive seen in a long time. Distant graphics and character graphice are great but the immediate area you run around in is rushed. Soooo much padding its beyond a joke! They just had to remake

They just had to remake the best game ever made but instead decided they were gonna milk as much from fans as they could and split the story over three. Large game developers should just be abandoned. Its nothing but money money money for them.
People should take a good look at indie devs and support good gameplay and new ideas not this repetitive reskinning pumped dlc crap the major studios have all latched onto. Such a shame to mess up one of the best games to have existed

Me encanto! no le pongo 10 porque sea un juego perfecto sino porque logro capturar la esencia del original

Final Fantasy VII Remake is the game we've been waiting for from Square Enix for so long. Atmospheric, interesting and exciting all your attention modern jRPG with an interesting story and spectacular battles. To achieve the ideal, the project only needs more even graphics and all the content from the original release. If you were waiting for a turn-based classic with new graphics you will most likely be disappointed, since the game has changed a lot. Everyone else is happy with the release of the first really powerful single-player release from the internal Square Enix studio for many years. Especially after the failure of Final Fantasy XV.

A good remake of the introductory part of the cult-favorite Final Fantasy VII. It improves on the original game in almost all aspects, yet lacks in scale and drops the ball at the very end.

What matters is still intact, and that’s the heart and soul of one of the greatest stories in video game history. It’s a return to form that has felt a long time in coming, and what’s even better is that there’s still at least two more games of this quality to come...They can’t mess this up, can they?
