Loved this remake. Final Fantasy is my all time favorite series and this was a magnificente return to origins with nostalgic feeling and at the same time brought a new dynamic and story elements.

    The good:
    - Excellent combat system. Never gets boring and is very fluent as well as complex and punishing if you don't pay attention.
    - Great soundtrack. - Detailed character designs (in combat and cut scenes) and overall sharp graphics with very little aliasing. - Good paced story with some nice additions (imo) to the original storyline. The bad: - Terrible voice acting and/or dialogue

    The bad:
    - Terrible voice acting and/or dialogue directing. While the original FF7 was somewhat goofy in it's tone this one is outright hysterical and over the top. Barret in particular is super cringy.
    - Clunky and inaccurate controls when navigating the world. Feels very pre-gen.
    - The environment is poorly textured and looks like a PS3 game that got remastered. It is probably due to the very long development and this does not at all look or feel like a current generation game from 2020.
    - Overly convoluted and poorly explained menus. The leveling system and equipment is rather basic compared to other RPGs (not neccesarily a bad thing) yet navigating it is a chore.

It is mind boggling how this game in almost every aspect is a step down from FFXV that came out 3.5 years prior to this one. And with the insane and very delayed development I highly doubt they will ever release the rest of the episodes.
I did however very much enjoy the game as I am a big fan of the original and the combat was very entertaining so it was easier for me to look through the flaws. For someone who didn't play the PS1 title back then it might not be as easy.

    Animation sucks.

    Hit box sucks.

I don't mind if the game is split into 2 parts, but midgar only is pushing it.

90% of ff7 cut out just to sell it to you as a seperate game.

To make up for the cut content, they pad it out. Like really pad it out. A 5 to 10 minutes location is now an hour long.

I do not recommend this if you liked the OG FF7. It is a spit to the face from square enix.

    -Wonderful music
    -Fantastic voice acting

    -The artistic direction is top-notch
    -Incredible package and presentation
-The worst game mechanics ever put to a game.

Square Enix doesn't want to make video games anymore, they want to make interactive movies, and It shows in FF7 Remake. Instead of crafting a whole new system to fit what they were working on, something that highlights the way battles take place that accentuates the frenetic pace they've set here; they instead shoved a 20+ years combat philosophy and style where it doesn't belong. Not only that, but the damage balance is broken at every level.

Normal mode damage is way over-tooled, forcing you further into the janky combat system. Let's not kid ourselves; you're going to tunnel one character for an entire fight until the game forces you to switch, and when it does, you'll tunnel combat over items or even spells (unless they force you into it). That is the horrible design, and they could have avoided all of it had they, just, made, something new. Instead, the caved to fanboy fear and shoveled this convoluted mess out.

Easy, is UNDER-Tooled and saps any and all fun out of combat. It's not like there's a lesser risk from combat--there's NO risk in combat. The most straightforward answer here would have been to come to market with a wholly new system for combat and not one tugging at nostalgia.

Classic, shouldn't exist. At that point, Square Enix should have gone full out and made this a movie and not pretend it was a game.

FF7 Remake sums up Square Enix perfectly. Grandious design, meticulous attention to detail in presentation and style, but Dear Lord, Do I have to make a Video Game? I really don't want to make a video game anymore! I want to make movies!! Please let us make a movie?!? The ironic thing is when they are allowed to make a movie; they're horrible.

I really hope after this release they take stock of their priorities and hunker down and focus back on Game mechanics and gameplay because right now, Square Enix is lost.

Grade per points as mentioned earlier:

    Music: A+
    Voice Acting: A+
    Graphics: A+
    Art direction: A+
    Presentation of Total Package: A+
    Game Mechanics: F-

Side note: The awful camera is awful, just awful. So, very, very bad. There's no fixing it, it's just bad.

    Update:4/27/2020:

After spending a lot more time with the game, I took a point off for the awful linear corridor design. The damn hand-holding this game does it has all the frustration of FF13. You can't explore those side paths, you can't go check this building, YOU HAVE TO GO HERE NOW WHERE WE TELL YOU!

I can take a bit of this in a game, but it's the entire thing folks. There's no grinding, there's no exploring. You go where they tell you to do and screw you for thinking otherwise! (until Chapter 14, basically the end of the game). It's another point against Square Enix for really, really, REALLY wanting to make interactive movies and not games.

Combat is still awful. I don't think I've ever played a game where the game part is the part I want to get through as fast as possible. I've hated every single fight I've had in the game, without fail. And I mean, trash fights, awful. Boss fights, awful. All of it is just so, god damn bad.

If you're shouting about great the battle system is, you're a masochist that hates good things. There is no middle ground here. No shades of grey. Normally I'd wouldn't be the type to be so black and white about something. With this game, it's all bad. If all the other elements weren't top-notch, I would have shelved this and never looked back. But, the rest of the package is just stellar.

People who supposed to die are not dead.

Combat can sometimes be very annoying. It's like you can dodge and do normal stuff but you also have some kind of turn base. I would've prefer turn base with awesome animations and strategic play but I kind of enjoyed the gameplay.
    I hated the mini games.
I was okay with cutting the fillers and focus more on the main missions.
This part had too many blanks, to many bad changes to the story.
Nobody liked the stupid ghosts or whatever they're called (that's how much I care about them).
I feel like the next parts will disappoint me and Square Enix will not have the balls to make the same story, with the important death and complex story for Cloud.
I see the hard work but can't give it more than 8.
Used time and money to implement this new battle system when a turn base was okay, make useless side missions, trying to change a good story into something we already is boring and we see everywhere: more parallel universes that can change your destiny and future...
We have no idea how much we will wait and if it deserves the wait.
I'm okay focusing more on what important instead of making too many things that will only make you more bored and care less for the good parts.
I love to see a remake of the game but I'm also disappointing.
I had fun with the game so it deserves an 8 but if the story is not better in Part 2 I don't think I will play it or I will play it after 1 year and maybe give it a 6 (if it's as bad as I expect it to be).
It's like Square Enix forget what made Final Fantasy 7 famous. They attack the good parts and try to change it.

Most polished game I've played in years and one of the best FF games period. The story and characters are interesting and easy to follow. This game does drag in some areas with puzzles and side plots, but it does great at everything else. One of the best combat systems yet with an entirely playable team. Diverse weapons with lots of skills to choose from and level up.

The story of the game is quite different from the original but it is still awesome. Characters feel so alive and you feel like a part of the gang. Gameplay is very fun but level designs could have been a little bit more explorable. The same thing also applies to the city. I wish we could explore every section of Midgar. The overall plot for me was intriguing enough to keep playing and really lives up to the title of this game being a REMAKE and not a carbon copy of the original. The highlight for me was visiting Sector 6 where the game really shines and also the jaw dropping finale.

The characters writing for me was below par with overly dramatic lines and cringeworthy dialogue exchanges. This doesn't help by the wooden English acting of some characters, particularly Cloud. The overuse of Sephiroth really makes the character less intimidating and more of a crazy ex that will not leave you alone.

One major flaw of this game is the amount of padding it has. Certain chapters and scenes are excruciatingly drawn out, particularly chapters 4, 6 and a particularly annoying scene in chapter 12.

The original characters are captured incredibly ~ better than even Advent Children did. The story is creatively fleshed out to a point where we are much more emotionally attached to the events in Midgar. However, if this wasn't FF7, it would be a considered a weak simplistic RPG. There isn't much more to character progression outside of levelling up your character and materia, and unlocking weapon abilities / stats using SP. They could have taken the liberty to expand the mechanics so much more, as they had done with the story. A seriously missed opportunity. And lastly, the hard mode. It's more of a chapter select / new game plus sort of thing. However, it falls very short and quite forced. You aren't able to use items and your MP does not regenerate at benches. This is fine, but it feels more like a gimmicky game mode more than a regular hard mode, as if they didn't know how else to make the game more difficult. It's a shame, since you spend the whole game hording items only to not be able to use them once you attempt to conquer hard mode. It would have better to have a separate hard mode playthrough where you start from scratch without your levels and materia, but it still allows you to use items and regen MP normally, but with the enemies stronger and with new abilities (as it is now). I do have faith that the team will make some improvements for the next game, as they'll be more focused on the game design itself, other than the fact that "it's an FF7 remake" and riding the nostalgia train.
I did still enjoy this game, and I recommend it to anybody who loves FF7 or Final Fantasy in general. I would not recommend it to those unfamiliar with the original, because of the above points. I still give this game a high score ~ the way they captured the characters and the world of Midgar is just that good, that it really does make one forget about it's gameplay issues.

Expand

Square-Enix became the Shinra. The story of this game sucks so hard, that every single employee involved making these decisions should be fired on the spot. Super disappointed.

Instead you get weird ghosts, time travel and whole lot of stuff that weren't in the orginal. Now it's just another confusing KH, but marketed, as FFVII RE.

This game was clearly promoted as a faithful remake only to ruin it all in the end. You really think this is okay?

Definitely NOT a 10/10 game if you actually care for the story of FFVII OG.

But everyone around told me to stop been so negative about it. Well guess what? They did. They actually fooled all of us by calling this game a faithful remake with new elements and extended story by simply throwing it all away in the last hours of the game! Time travel? Defying fate? AC/C is now a bad ending to the story? Well done SE. I've lost my last hope for you, as a company. As a game it's a great game, absolutely! But, as a story, as a remake... It's just insulting. Expand

There are some crazy people in the reviews here criticizing the battle system (aka one of the best parts of the game), these people need to chill. This is the closest you can get to full turn based and it is glorious! You can't really ask for better bosses. Even a minor character shows up as a great boss. Just don't do all the side quests, just get a taste to how they feel in the first section (go ahead do them all), and you will know how bad they are (it never changes). I hate myself for doing almost all of the sidequests because it takes away from the game SO much. They are the worst mmo garbage quests in one horrible package. You get sick of it. So just do a third of them for each area and move on! The game would be a 10 without those, but remember, you don't have to do them (even the rewards are very bad). People are so childish, there is no gun to your head to make you do anything. The rest is just brilliant! Expand

The classic mode is basically an Action-RPG that plays itself and occasionaly allows you to pick some actions. In the battles with regular enemies it's rather annoying to even pick actions, because the characters beat the enemies even if you don't do anything. So why even bother to do something? Also most of the time the enemies are almost dead by the time your ATB-gauge is filled.
Except for bigger "HP-Sponge" enemies, that take forever to beat, but don't even have any mechanics to make the fight fun. They just seem to be there, to extend the playtime.
And in Boss-Battles the ATB-gauge fills way to slow and for the characters you don't control the ATB-gauge almost doesn't fill at all. So you either have to switch back and forth between the characters, all the time, or you just control one character, while the others are completely useless.
And the Action Combat does not work, because constantly picking actions and switching between characters makes it tedious. SquareEnix tried to make a game thats a Turn-Based and Action RPG in one but actually this game fails at both.

Since the gameplay was this horrible i didn't play very far. So i can't say much about the story or the world. The characters seemed to be designed very well. But this is just a drop in the ocean.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Combat is okay when camera can keep up. Don't even mention the frame rate in areas. Graphics are gorgeous, until you're on the plate looking down on the slums. 7 months later and it still hasn't been patched

The story and setting is fantastic for the first 90% of the game. You're being fleshed into the avalanche plotline and fight, while getting mild flashes of intrigue towards sephiroth, just like the original, then you get to the final couple hours of the game and OH BOY, does it get whack. Sephiroth all of a sudden gets forced to be a final boss. You spend 40 hours plus fighting Shinra, getting emotionally involved, absorbed into the lore, to then be told at the end 'ok, sephiroth bad guy, go kill'

Sephiroth is the villain, I get it, but considering this remake is just up to midgar, there is still a whole two thirds of the original game that would continue to build up the sephiroth fight, but in the remake, I'm expected to care about sephiroth in the last 2 hours, after spending 40 hours battling shinra and enjoying midgar. Just seems tagged on, almost like that ran out of ideas in how they can actually 're-boot' the next game. Most areas are glorified hallways. No where near as bad as ff13, but they have learned to be a bit more discreet about it. Gameplay boils down to 'run forward, squeeze through rubble gap, fight enemy, run forward, destroy item cache's, walk forward, rinse and repeat. EXCEPT, now 5 minute sections of the original game are padded out to last an hour. People will try and say it's fleshed out, but it's just running through bland repetitive dungeons. It's padding, nothing more, nothing less. All in all, as a mega ff7 fan, I thoroughly enjoyed the expanded avalanve Vs shinra plot, the main cast where well voice acted and incredibly likeable, and the combat is a big improvement from ff15, with lovely visuals. The general gameplay and late plotline will inevitably frustrate you, and make you question whether it was even worth playing. Knowing the route the plot is now going down in the second part, I won't be in any rush to play part 2 when it does come out. 7/10

Barrett is a stereo type comic relief character with a lot of obnoxious meat head quotes. Jessie is surprisingly a witty and charming character but her constant affections for Cloud become tiresome. Talking about Cloud he's apparently the biggest chick magnet in Midgar and reeks of being a emotionally broken bad boy.

All that aside FFVII Remake isn't a bad start but it would be nice if the dialogue and combat had a bit more substance in part II of the remake.

    Per:
    - Art Design is very, very well done. The world and setting. The protagonists too. No matter if main or next to character.

    - The combat system has been adapted very well in this day and age. You are often forced to control all characters in battle, which the game does very well! For old fans there is still the classic mode. Nice encore!

    - Midgar was shown much more interesting, bigger and more intense in Remake. You learn a lot more about the people and the city itself. In my opinion, it's very important because the city is a very important part of the entire story of FF VII.

-The soundtrack is fabulous. Nobuo Uematsu and his team did a great job. I could list tons of songs ...

    - The story itself is one of the best in video game history and is more relevant than ever!

    - On the subject of the opening scene, for me the best thing I've ever seen. The developers have outdone themselves! The tracking shot, the background music. The transition from CGI to in-game! This is how you start a game! Bravo Square Enix!

    - The sound itself is of the finest quality! High quality, whether in the fights or in quiet scenes.

-Graphically very successful. Thanks to the Unreal 4 engine, the game looks very good as an overall package.
Light effects, great resolution. buttery smooth performance ... there are small negative points that didn't bother me that much.

    Cons:
    - In some places the backgrounds are a bit vague.

    - Textures sometimes load a little late.

    - I played the story in English with German subtitles. In my opinion, the content comes across much better in English. The German texts are of course based on the German synchronization. But why isn't the German synchronization aligned with the English one? The content comes across much better in Japanese and English.

Final Fantasy VII Remake is what I had dreamed of for the last 15 years. The original being my favourite game of all time, meant that my expectations going in were quite big while also being realistic due to Square Enix's recent disappointing releases.

The game visually is absolutely gorgeous, with probably the best looking character models for the main characters I've ever seen in a video game. The areas recreated in 3D have been done with a lot of love and faithfulness. I often had to stop to look at how beautiful the world was, not believing what I was seeing. Despite running on my PS4 Pro, I thought people could be excused if they thought this was a next gen game. There were however some visual issues in certain areas of the game through the form of texture bugs. Some textures really looked like it belonged in last gen and compared to a high quality character model, it really showed off. I hope that this can later be fixed with patches or with a PS5 release.

Being a fan of RPGs, this is the best combat system I've ever come across in any game. The perfect mixture of action and strategy was a blend that absolutely blew me away. The materia system is back which makes gameplay as customisable as in the original. Summons do work differently but now they fight alongisde me and I can issue them commands; great choice! The switching of characters is seemless and the ATB system encourages you to do so. This means that you are using all of your characters in a fight. What excites me is that this combat system is already excellent and yet there is still room for improvement. The aerial battle needs improvement. It does not happen often but when it does, it is a pain. The AI for characters could be better when you aren't using them and having given roles like healer, tank or DPS given to those AI controlled characters would make sure they act the way you desire. Having set Materia loadouts that you can swap to mid fight would also be helpful.
Like most Final Fantasy games the story is one of its best qualities. The story of the game is about 90-95% faithful and was quite an emotional ride of nostalgia for me. The added story content was also welcomed for me as I enjoyed exploring more of the world and its characters. The final part of the game deviates quite a bit from the original, a change that will determines which path the future games take. I know that many did not like the change, I am personally optimistic about them and I'm excited to play the next games not fully knowing what to expect plot-wise.

The voice-acting for all the characters were absolutely top-notch, something that is quite rare in JRPGs. This meant that the intended strong character development and connections were delivered in an exceptional manner. I have never been as emotionally connected to the characters of this world as I am after playing the remake. I found myself caring for many of the minor characters too.

The game's side quests could be better entrenched in the story but were still fun to do, especially the wall market ones. The many mini games, the colosseum, enemy assessing and battle simulator were all welcomed additions. Replaying the game on Hard mode deserves a chance after your first playthrough. It does not only makes the game harder but forces you to make the most of the battle system. The boss battles are considerably different with new moves to give you a deserving challenge.

I spent 130 hours on this game and I can clearly say that this was my favourite Platinum and now my overall favourite game on PS4 and of this generation. I am hoping for a next gen version and obviously can't wait for the next installments.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This was my first ever Final Fantasy game; I have since gone on to play FFX, FFX-2, FFXIV (ARR to SHB), FFVII, FFVI and BD. The character writing is exceptional, voice acting is astounding; the graphical quality is truly something to behold, and the soundtrack is an amazing adaptation - not replacement - of Uematsu's original masterworks; along with the amazing action-RPG combat, these are qualities in which FF7R-1 speaks for itself.
I agree with FF7R-1's development team's answer to the philosophical nightmare of "remaking" art: we cannot make the same old machine with new cogs; rather, we should aspire to make an all-new machine with the old cogs. FF7R-1 is a damn good new machine.
FF7R-1's largest failure, though, is it's side-quests, which - with the exception of one side-quest in Chapter 14 with a thrilling optional boss - all frankly suck. This is the area with by far the largest room for improvement.
Also, maybe they could have made it more clear this was not the full game (series), and just the first part of it?

Some of these aspects are partially true, some are subjective and personal tastes. What i suggest is let go of all these preconceptions and play a superb game, that any FFVII and JRPG fan will enjoy as most of the aspects (story, script and voice acting, music, graphics, gameplay) are between very good and top notch. It does not reach the overall peaks of the best jrpg in PS4 so far (Nier Automata) as it focuses more on storytelling than on the actual rpg(istic) depth and experience. But it excels in telling a story as no other (final fantasy) game did in the last years did (putting aside the fact that you like or don't like the script). The right score imho is 8. People of the '80s as me would have expected a slightly stronger effort from Square Enix in the FFVII remake, probably some different script choices, but i'm not disappointed at all, i have enjoyed a great experience and a great game. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I have been looking forward to this game for a long time but I was blown away by how badly Square screwed this remake. I completed the platinum so it's not for lack of trying to like the game.

    1. The game can't decide if it's a action or rpg game. So it decided to be a movie.
    2. We were told that they were only releasing the first disk because we'd get to explore Midgar. There are 8 sections to Midgar, we explored the same 3 timy sections as the original so no new areas were added.
    3. There was no exploring of any kind. The few times the game opened up to allow you to explore it was done in the most cookie cutter manner imaginable.
    4. The magic system was hard capped to add a fake level of difficulty. You can reach 9999 HP but 2x MP up resulted in around 200MP for most users.
    5. Hard mode removed items all together and wouldn't let you easily regen magic. This kind of artificial difficulty to a hard mode is pathetic.
    6. For some reason Square forgot in both this game and 15 that they had this nice thing called the Gambit system since FF12. By not including the gambit system the extra characters are pretty much useless in most fights unless you keep switching between them. Given that this is no longer a turn based game switching between characters was cumbersom.
    7. The final battle of the game was a ripoff of Advent Children. Once the wing came out I was so pissed that I still had a hard mode playthrough to cleanup for the plat.
    8. The game was 80% padding with one to many unskippable conversations.
    9. A good part of the games maps were setup so you could walk/listen to story or have you squeeze between something just long enough for the next area to load. The levels were so tiny and boring it was pathetic.

Overall I'm so dissapointed with this game that I am officially done with Square. I've played every FF since I was a kid in the 80's and this is one of the biggest cash grabs I've ever seen from a company riding the coat tails of IP from when it was a functional studio.

To add insult to injury when is part 2 coming out? No one knows because Sqaure's release cycle is god awful.

I didn't play the original FF7 and I really love this game (38 hours on normal mode). The graphics and soundtracks and top-notch. Battles are very very good and engaging. I love the mini games too. Towards the ending, the gaming experience is very worth the price of the game! You wouldn't go wrong with this game!

Combat was amazing and action packed, except for boss battles. Boss battles just took too long and one felt more relieved when beating a boss than a sense of achievement. This is what the whole game felt like, a long, boring, over stretched out, simple story. What took 5 hours in the original game, took 35hours to complete in the remake. Ridiculous.

To put it simply I'd give the game a 95/100. This is my first Final Fantasy game, It has 2-3 problems. The first is the side quests, they just don't seem to have any depth and aren't interesting. The second is the level design, sometimes it just feels like the game is made the way it is just so it takes more time to do basic things. The third is chapter 6, it should be maybe 60% of the length it actaully is. There are several things that clearly only exist to slow you down and make you take more time, and they are just no fun to deal with. However the characters are amazing and I felt instantly attached to them. During combat at least for me there was no clear best character, they all had a roll to fill and could do it well.
The graphics are great, and the game ran pretty much perfectly. Like I said this is my first Final Fantasy game and I loved the story, from what I've seen online the ending was kind of controversial because it deviates from the origional, so I want and got a little run down of the origional's story, and honestly the origional's story seems good, but I'm happy with the direction the remake went. The world is also amazing. It seems so real, they did a phenomenal with world building. I generally liked the battle system, but there were a few moments where it was a little frustrating, especially with flying enemies, but there were other moments where the system just seemed perfect and it was some of the most fun I've had in a long time. Outside of 1 boss fight in chapter 17 while you are on the motor cycle all of the boss fights are good. The game was well worth the money, and I will buy the second part of the remake within the first week or two of it's launch (I don't preorder or buy games launch day).

    Pros:
    + Story
    + Characters

    So-So:
    - Combat
    - Side- missions
    - general repetition

    Cons:
    - uninspired level design (yes, I know it's a remake of an old game, I can still not like something. I also never played the original).
    - Gameplay/combat wasn't deep enough for a 30-40 long campaign, making the game feel extra drawn out.

    Negatives:
    -Awful, boring, filler side quests.
    -Slow loading, texture pop ins.
-Encountered a couple of glitches that required resetting the game (as of 4/24/20).
-The title of the game is deceiving. Without mentioning spoilers, this game is NOT a full remake of the original game (covering less than the first disc of the OG) and does not by any means serve as a replacement. You are required to know the events of the original FF7 to understand the ending of this game!

I will focus on the negatives here because I don't want to rehash the same what others mentioned: The visuals are beautiful. The music is outstanding and the dialogue is (in most times) entertaining and fun.

Overall, the game is entertaining and it's great to see the characters who we loved to show again in today's technology. What made FF7 great is the rich story and characters.

Overall, the game is entertaining and it's great to see the characters who we loved to show again in today's technology. What made FF7 great is the rich story and characters. Unfortunately, the "remake" did not live up to the same level.

The remake could have stuck to the original story and be one of the greatest modern hits, but they decided to manipulate the story to be 100+ hours longer in order to create several installments. The story was dumbed down the dark and nihilistic side. The characters are too cheerful considering how their situations are.

The people in the slums look too "clean" as they are your usual Starbucks customers rather than what supposed to be laborers who are suffering from bad living conditions living under a huge metal plate covering the sky and inside huts with no lights and rats running everywhere.

Some parts of the cutscenes and dialogs are cringy, like Berret's overreacting over how he cares about Marlene and the anime-like behavior of the girls namely Aerith, Jessie and even Tifa.

The side quests are **** What made FF7 stands above all the other RPGs is putting the player into the action rather than wasting time on fetch quests and "bring me my cats" **** to fill up playtime. None of the sidequests were interesting. They could have invested richer dialouges and side stories to add more interesting characters but they dropped the ball hard time.

There are a lot of levels with 1-2 hours of corridors and one-way routes that are too long they become boring and you just want to finish them ASAP to move on.

The new characters are all cringy and annoying you wish you can hit them hard in the face, especially Johnny who isn't annoying in a funny way.

Finally, the "ghost" thing was a very bad diversion from the original story. As I said before, because the original story is grim and dark, they want to fix it (it's not broken in the first place) by changing the story to a fairytale. I won't proceed more so my review don't spoil it, but the story is going to be a Disney-like franchise where people are happy thereafter.

The game is ranked as "T" for teens, a game which 80% of its fans are now in their mid 30s and older.

The game took too long to be released, and not even the full game too. You can see they used most of FFXV and KH's engine and mechanics so it looks like the game wasn't in production until far later when they reused the existing stack, which is not necessarily a bad thing.

Definetly the strongest remake i have ever played. Ff7 remake manages to overhaul an outstanding game, it eleminates the shortcomings of the older game with newest technic and graphic but keeping its Story, while enhancing it and modifying it if necessary.
Whilst doing that, it never feels out of place or wrong. Modifications to the story feel just right. It surely still has tiny flaws.

Its possible that all the hype made me view it in too favorable a light before going in and I'll give that it was a decent nostalgia trip given that I played the original when I was 8.
    Problems:
For a game that requires so much jumping, just add a jump button. Any dexterous action that is required outside of combat is so tedious that I've found myself screaming "WHO WOULD DESIGN THIS!? WHO MOVES LIKE THAT ON MONKEY BARS!? DAMN YOU STAIRS!"
The combat is alright, but honestly feels like a step back from FFXV. I understand that they were trying to make a combat system that could combine action and jrpg but it honestly feels like they half-assed both and relied on nostalgia for sales. The included "classic" mode is a joke and cant be used in any difficulty above easy, which is laughably simple.
All of the exploration outside of combat is also made exceedingly tedious by the slow movements that seem oddly placed. "Oh, a 6" wide bar is in the way? Let me just spend the next 10 seconds ducking under it even though I was just sprinting"

Pros: the soundtrack is fantastic and revisiting old memories with amazing graphics is pretty cool.

Bottomline: while watching me play, my wife would often say "oh that's so pretty!" well so is a Corpse Flower but that doesnt mean you want to spend 40 hours with one.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I'm skeptical of the 10/10 reviews. I've had this game for a week now and completed it in around 40 hours because I took my sweet time.

    Good:
    - The combat is a challenging, fun, action/turn based hybrid that requires you to actually pay attention and know what you're doing.
    - The visuals are (usually) amazing. There are some great scenic points in the game. The backdrops of Midgar seem prerendered rather than actually in game, which I think is actually a very smart move because it's reminiscent of the original and has a lot of charm.
    - The voice acting is for the most part very enjoyable.
    - The expanded backstories of some minor characters is so good to see. It was a pleasure to have more interaction with the Avalanche crew. They felt like real people and were done justice (in the way that they act and are presented).
    - I feel the main characters were also done rather well. I love Barrett probably more than i originally did, and Cloud's characterisation is on point.
    - The key locations are pulled of very well, especially Wall Market in chapter 9. I also really enjoyed the Shinra building section. I might've liked there to be more to interact with in certain areas, though.
    - The boss fights are really cool and are long, but don't feel like a chore to do.
    - There are quite a lot of sweet nostalgic moments.
    - I love the collectible music disks but I wish I could listen to them on the go.
    - Marlene is so bloody adorable.

    Mixed:
    - The music is hit and miss. The tracks which are quite faithful to the original are amazing. some of the more tampered with versions are a little much, and some are almost unrecognizable. One track in particular I found terrible and obnoxious (but that's just my music taste). Overall, I'd have preferred a little more faith to the original soundtrack and less variations of the same tracks strewn throughout, as it seems to lack cohesion.
    - Some of the textures are pixelated and a bit ugly, which you wouldn't expect of a game with this budget (and pricetag). I say this is mixed because because I actually don't notice them a lot, but when I do it's very jarring.
    - Rufus' character design isn't so great.
    - The animation for moving under/between obstacles is painfully slow. And some sections force you to walk slow which kind of gets on my nerves.
    - I'd have liked a little more freedom to explore certain parts when I felt like it, rather than have the game handhold me and tell me I can't go this or that way just yet with that obnoxious pop up.

    Bad:
    - Sephiroth's voice actor is hit and miss.
    - Sephiroth and meteor are featured a little too much too early on.
    - Some of the side quests were like FFXII hunts, which I enjoyed. But in general they're lacklustre, generic go here, kill a reskinned enemy, come back. No soul or effort seems to have been put into a lot of them. I'd expect more from a game with such a large budget and price tag.

    Very bad:
    - The whispers kind of ruin a lot of moments in the game and mess up the flow. It's more to do with their implementation in the story than the actual concept of the whispers themselves. I didn't like them.

    Additional thoughts:

I'm a little confused about how they're going to manage the continuity of character progression from this game to the next. I finished at level 39 with many maxed out spell materias and around 5 summons. Imagine leaving Midgar in FFVII at level 39, around 4000hp, with fire 3, bolt 3, cure 3, life materia, etc. Granted there are quite a few materia from the original that isn't in this game yet, but I've got a lot. I've got a ton of weapons you don't get until well after you leave Midgar.

That was the right descision and really important for the success of the remaster of this game!

I hope that episode 2 or maybe 3 comes out also very soon. The splitted story is the only drawback, it could become the biggest issue of the game as long they aren‘t released.

Final Fantasy VII Remake is the game we've been waiting for from Square Enix for so long. Atmospheric, interesting and exciting all your attention modern jRPG with an interesting story and spectacular battles. To achieve the ideal, the project only needs more even graphics and all the content from the original release. If you were waiting for a turn-based classic with new graphics you will most likely be disappointed, since the game has changed a lot. Everyone else is happy with the release of the first really powerful single-player release from the internal Square Enix studio for many years. Especially after the failure of Final Fantasy XV.

What matters is still intact, and that’s the heart and soul of one of the greatest stories in video game history. It’s a return to form that has felt a long time in coming, and what’s even better is that there’s still at least two more games of this quality to come...They can’t mess this up, can they?
