My God. If irritating, over the top, shoddy voice acting, combined with irritating, over the top, shoddy scripting floats your boat, then guess what? You're in luck. I really love this remake... There a lot of things to do, is great how they added new thing to the main story, I think the only thing I thing disagree about it is not controlling one character that appears in the late game... But despite of that it's a wonderful game

Looks pretty, but that's about it. The gameplay simply isnt fun and its packed with garbage filler to stretch the game into multiple releases because money. A proper ff7 remake should have been an easy home run, but by either greed or incompetence we got this.

Only part of the game. The other part will be exclusive for PlayStation 5. I’m not wasting my money on that trash when a gaming pc is simply better. If you release half a game on a console, release the other half. I don’t care about performance, I feel cheated af right now and won’t bother unless I can find a way to scam it on a pc. Not paying a cent more.

The story may alienate both new and veteran fans of FFVII due to it's complexity, straying from the original story. However the gameplay feels great and the graphics are next level even on a PS4 Slim.

    Very mediocre.

The story has a lot of good parts, the characters are better written than I anticipated. however most of the game is so padded with irrelevant faffing about that the pace just ends up downright terrible. As for the actual gameplay, the entire game is basically a really long corridor with some very simple environmental puzzles or side-activities. Combat is functional

As for the actual gameplay, the entire game is basically a really long corridor with some very simple environmental puzzles or side-activities.

Combat is functional and has some variety and strategy to it, but it is very much style over substance, and dramatically overstays its welcome. It basically plays like a much worse version of Kingdom Hearts which decided to have the animations look cooler at the cost of not feeling nearly as good to control.

The art & audio is fantastic though, as you'd expect, but frankly I see those as force-multipliers of the gameplay & story, and with gameplay this weak, and story this dragged out it just isn't enough to amount to more than "good". And frankly there are lots of great and amazing games out there, so I'd suggest playing those instead.

    In summary:

I'd honestly suggest you just watch a lets' player play it instead. The story is too padded out, and there are many much better games if you want roughly its style of combat.

The only point of frustration comes from the sometimes brutal boss battles, in which combat chokes down to basic doge and counterattack, playable, but very monotonous. That coupled with sometimes a little too many enemy encounters throughout the many labyrinths culminate into some repetitiveness. That being said, these frustrations are clearly the minority of this very well rounded, memorable game, Square Enix, you did great and deserve this 8/10. Expand

    Jugabilidad

Throughout the game you become the feeling that many parts of the original game got stretched only for the sake of adding gameplay hours. Some dungeons are definitely tedious and many aspects of the original story were changed. Personally I didnt like these changes. But still the quality of the production is so good that you will still keep playing without losing interest. Is it the remake I expected? No. Is it a masterpiece like the original ff7? No.
But still it is a quality product every final fantasy fan should not miss.

    The Good
This game has a pretty good presentation, introducing you to a series of endearing and lovable characters throughout the story, the cinematics after each character are pretty rewarding, and the visuals are stunning.

The sidequests have a good background, getting you involved to solving them, also there are hidden rewarding cutscenes after complete all the sidequests of a region.

The battle system is dynamic and fun, a good deal between an action game and turn base strategy game, also appropriate level of option to level up your gear and personalize your weapons via materias.

    The Bad
The journey feels interrupted in some areas were you will be able to complete some sidequests, the main problem is that these sidequest are attached to story characters, then you can't save then for later, if you want to have the optional content you will have to complete these right away, in some moments this could ends up felling like homework instead cool optional content.

The normal difficulty (the max difficulty for a first play) could feels a bit easy, making it possible to beat the game without pay attention to the enemies weaknesses or even leveling up your gear.

    The game is graphically excellent.
The voice acting is great (for the most part).
    That's all we wanted.

Sadly, they decided to mess with the story.
A story that had a constant sense of urgency.
Now; we have side quests that make the sense of urgency evaporate in the blink of an eye.
    Sephiroth is introduced ludicrously early.
And what the hell is with all the ghosts in capes?

    WHAT THE HELL?!?!

In one scene they're terrifying Sector 7, with you beating the sh*t out of them as they attack you for seemingly no reason, and the next time you see them they're helping you?!?! What the f*ck is that for poor consistency? After the first major encounter with them, it was if the incident never happened!

Barretttttt: "These ghost things are bad!"
    Cloud: "Ugh. Yeah. Ugh."

And that's it! It's as if the ghost terrorizing Sector 7 never happened.
    They're completely forgotten about!
    Didn't happen!?

    As for Cloud:
    Someone: "hahaha funny joke"
    Cloud: "Ugh!"

    Every God damn five minutes!
It's like reading a typical Reddit thread; nauseating, repetitive, and cringe.

Like I said, the game is graphically brilliant, voice acting is done well (with the exception of Cloud's script work, which should be shoved up Nomura's a**) but they messed with the story by diluting it down and padding it with content that.. frankly... makes me wish I was glad I pirated the game.

I stopped playing it at Aeris' house.
    I've uninstalled it.
    Glad I didn't buy it.
    Glad I pirated it.
    It's that bad.

I can't tell you how many times I've played the original version.
More than 40+ play throughs in 20+ years?

I've bought/owned it on the PS1, PC, iFad, PS4, back to PC with Steam...
I've bought this timeless classic multiple times on different platforms.

F*ck you, Nomura, you ruined this one great opportunity with Reddit-Tier Padded Cringe.

The remake is a padded out disappointment.

They would have been better off leaving the original story alone.

I'm reinstalling the original version, via Steam, as I type this. I prefer it.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Bloated mess of a game. Outside the music and fantastic visuals, the only thing good about this game is the combat system, but that's only at the start. After a while, you realize that it's all spectacle and no substance, which is Nomura's specialty.

All they had to do was follow the original game and expand a bit here and there, but instead they decided to cram the game with useless filler so they can justify slicing it up and selling it in parts for $60 - $100 a pop. And don't even get me started on the corrupt decision to lock the DLC to the PS5 only. Sucks to suck for the people who got this game on the PS4.

The story is such a mess I don't even know where to begin. First off, the reveal that Sephiroth was the one Cloud was seeing in those brief black outs, is not only wrong, but completely ruins Sephiroth's reveal later on. In the original, Sephiroth's reveal was masterfully done. Walking through the hallways of the Shrina building, seeing the trail of blood as you came across mutilated corpses of enemies you were just struggling to fight and then finding the body of the Shinra president. It made you terrified of Sephiroth. This time, they show him right off the bat and ruin any sort of build up to the fact that he's alive. Yes, the original came out 30 years ago and everyone knows that Sephiroth is alive, but that doesn't excuse poor story telling. If A New Hope was remade and they added a bunch of scenes where Vader was taunting Luke through the Force and told him right away he's Luke's father, it would be seen as a massive misstep and downright insulting. Everyone knows that Vader is Luke's father, but that doesn't make the reveal in Empire any less impactful all these years later. Changing the Sephiroth reveal shows that they have no idea how to tell a story, but I should have expected that with Nomura at the helm of this project.

The entire idea that Cloud and Sephiroth are fate-crossed enemies is a bunch of bull crap, as well. Go play the original. Sephiroth barely even notices Clouds existence other than seeing him as a useful pawn. Them being fated enemies never even comes into play. At most, Cloud hates Sephiroth and wants to kill him.

And to top it all off, the in-game representation of fans of the original game, the ones that have been pleading for a remake for 20+ years are the final villain of part 1. The arbiters of fate or whatever they were called are trying to have this new game follow the story beats of the original and they have you kill them off. They have you kill off the in-game representation of the people who wanted the game to be true to the original. How is that not seen as a massive insult? It's a spit in the face to people who asked for a remake for years and then got this hot mess.

TLDR: This game sucked and Nomura is an idiot.

There is a LOT of padding and filler, and at times just felt like a FF15 reskin, especially with the poor camera angles; however, it was still an enjoyable experience and I look forward to the next chapter. I just hope they cut all the unnecessary padding and filler, and stick to the main story line while flushing out the character development.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Level design was far too linear in comparison to the original game , not many secrets and items to find in 'dungeon areas'. Lack of materia. Ending changed, giving away far too much of the latter story. Did not stay true to original game Sephiroth introduced way to early. Positives - graphics look amazing, some of the reworked sound track sound good however not all. Expand

The characters look more alive and complete with expressions and superb voice acting, especially Aerith and Tifa. And Midgar, wow just wow, is bustling with life, and the excellent soundtrack complements the various themes and stages. Once you play the game, you just want to continue to see how it will surprise you next. Downside, game is short, probably just 30% of the full story, and the motorbike mini-game is all eye-candy, and it seem confused on whether it wants to be Gran Turismo or GTA. Finished the game, and it was a fun ride, then waiting for the next installment, hopefully PS5 slims will be available at retail by then...

    Un juego muy decepcionante.
En primer lugar, este juego no es una nueva versión real, sino un reinicio reescrito del original. Y en eso es un poco estafador.

The main characters are some of my favorites in a videogame! Most of the side-characters are amazing as well, especially Jessie, Sephiroth and Reno. The combat system is excellent! It's like a combination of Hack 'n' Slash & Turn Based at the same time, there are 4 completely different party members to control, tons of different skills, items and builds to use, it's very deep and organic, it feels awesome and it looks phenomenal! The RPG elements and the Materia system are just wonderful! The bosses are some of the best I've ever encountered in a videogame. The music is fantastic for sure and it fits the visuals perfectly! Visually, this is one of the most beautiful games I've ever played! The lighting, the animations, the textures & the setting are breathtaking! Lastly, the set pieces and the visual representation are the best I've ever seen! Some cutscenes look like they are out of a CGI movie and there are so many jaw-dropping moments! I do have few minor complaints though; the textures look bad at times, some chapters feel significantly longer than they should've been (Chapter 6, Chapter 7, Chapter 11 and Chapter 14), and the side-quests are uninteresting.

Pros: + Interesting story + Awesome characters + Flawless gameplay + Outstanding set pieces + Incredible music & boss fights + Absolutely gorgeous visuals

    Minor pacing issues
    Weak side-quests

The combat is not particularly well done either. It feels like it's trying to be turn based and real time simultaneously and it just doesn't work. This game's rendition of the AP system is a shallow attempt at making combat similar to the original game. Needing to rack up damage in order to use offensive abilities makes sense, but needing to do this to heal your party doesn't make much sense. In a turn based game you would choose to either deal damage or heal yourself. In this combat system, you have to do both and it makes no sense. This game would be much better if it went all in in either direction. I would prefer turn based combat, but even going all in on the real time combat would've made it better. I may not have liked FF15's combat system, but at least it didn't try to be something it's not, keeping it straightforward.
Although there are some positives. The different combat styles for each character can keep gameplay unique, which is an upgrade over 15's combat system. The materia system is also fun. There can also be fun character interactions. Cloud has zero personality, which makes him kinda boring, but also creates some funny moments when other characters actual personalities juxtapose with his.
This game has some pros to it, but not enough to make this game actually enjoyable.

An action RPG which is a “remake” of the original Final Fantasy VII, interestingly, not only is it a genre shift from the first game, but the story itself diverges – and the divergence of the story is a major plot point. It expands on the Midgar section of the original game, a section of the game that took about 8 hours to beat, and turns it into a 40-60 hour long game, all while engaging in a few meta plot twists to keep players familiar with the game guessing how much things will change.

Unfortunately, this is the heart of the problem of the game: they didn’t know what to expand on, so they expanded on EVERYTHING, even making up a few new sequences. This makes the good parts even bigger and even better, and results in a few new sequences (like a sequence with the Avalanche sidekicks, who were largely a side note in the original game) which really worked well, and added significant characterization – but the game also expanded on the bad parts, resulting in what were previously brief inter-area travel sequences or mini-dungeons becoming two hours long (or longer!) of endless corridors, and some added dungeons that weren’t even in the original game which added nothing to the game but length.

At its best, it strikes an excellent balance between characterization and humor that was common in 1990s JRPGs, then sort of faded from view. At its worst, it is hours of slogging down corridors and fighting monsters that aren’t very challenging to fight, over and over again.

The best part of this game is the improvements in characterization. Every single character is more interesting, including the random background Avalanche characters, the Shinra characters, and even the random side characters in the Wall Market. Barret in particular ends up with a sort of almost preacher-esque character, which is really fun to see – doubly so because for all of his bravado and being so big and bad, he’s clearly got issues underneath and is putting on a bit of a show. Tifa’s insecurity comes through much more strongly than it did in the original game, and Cloud ends up with significantly more characterization, being both uncertain and putting on a show of being a badass SOLDIER. Aerith’s personality, too, shines through, with her playful mischief being a major highlight – at least, until she ends up becoming the Cetra Waif, which makes her much less interesting and more subdued (and generic).

This goes down to the background Avalanche members, who get a lot more characterization, and thus build more of a connection with the player, as well as the random people in Wall Market, including some new characters, including the sadistic masseuse Madam M, a bit character whose interactions with Cloud are absolutely hilarious.

The introductory sequence, the added characterization for Avalanche members (including a whole chapter that is totally devoted to them), the Aerith meeting all the way through Wall Market, the battle up the pillar to try and defend Sector 7, going up the Shinra building, and the battles at the top of the tower – all of these sequences are improved over the original, and add new context and characterization.

Unfortunately, this is a game with 18 chapters, and in the end, chapters 3, 5, 6, 8, 10, 11, 13, 14, 15, and 17 all contain very significant padding – meaning that over half the chapters in the game contain significant filler content. Worse, chapters 5, 6, 10, 11, 15, and 17 are basically entirely filler, with the only significant events occurring with the boss fights in them (and sometimes, not even then).

This is a huge black mark on the game; it is the quality new story content that draws us in, but the vast amount of filler means that it ends up spaced out. Worse, it weakens the story very significantly; half of the game (chapters 5-7, 10 – 12, and 15-18) are all done under very significant time pressure, but each of these three sequences includes not one but *two* filler chapters, where you basically go through a “dungeon” that is just a bunch of corridors or pseudo-corridors. None of these are interesting, and they just bog down the progress of the game while robbing it of the sense of urgency that the pacing of these parts so desperately need.

Perhaps the saving grace is that the combat of the game is pretty reasonable; while the normal encounters are mostly pretty easy, the game has a few sub-boss type enemies that help mix things up. Moreover, the actual bosses are made much more interesting by the new combat mechanics, and the game is significantly more difficult than the original JRPG – it is not an overly difficult game by any means but the combat is at least interesting.

Overall, I think this game averages out to decent-to-good, but the really good parts are separated by padding.

Now this is how you remake a game. This is very good, and lives up to its legacy. Playing through the game on hard mode was very challenging and kept me in rapt attention, because the combat system in this game is very good; an excellent mix of action-oriented and tactical gameplay. I haven't had this much fun in an RPG since Divinity Original Sin 2.

The reason I can't give it a higher score is that it's a fairly linear experience. This has the benefit of giving focus to the story since you always know what you're doing, but the lack of freedom often feels restrictive, and you get stuff like the shoehorned motorcycle section, or endless corridor levels. It's really close to being a 9 though because the combat and game balance are so good.

A disappointing game to play, and not a true Remake at all.
They have should called Final Fantasy VII Reboot. Because this is basically what the game is, in the end.
The graphics is excellent, but the exploration is barely minimal, and definitely more similar to a corridor simulator game, rather than a true jrpg...

Nice graphics, good story, can do a second run on hard mode and grind stats, shame it's not a complete story though

FF7R is a **** great game. But every game has it's fair share of flaws. FF7R biggest flaw for me is that the pacing during some chapters can be a drag.

Basically made the worst aspects of the original game's story, dialog, and plot and made then even worse. Totally and unabashedly cringe, childish, unnappealing, self-important without substance, and generally lacking a creative purpose other than making revenue gains.

The gameplay relies heavily on handholding and tutorial pop-ups that break immersion. Aside from that, combat is unintuitive and frustrating for a number of reasons: bad ai design, bad stun and stagger mechanics that are heavily biased against the player, and yet it's still too easy. It's just not great. Square has not been able to figure out 3D action-oriented gameplay in 20 years, and I really wish they would just abandon that venture and stick to thoughtful strategy.

I think Square has gone too far into itself and lost touch with its fan base. In fact this game is an open mockery of fans, so much so that it's integrated into the story in a controversial twist that breaks the fourth wall and shatters any chance of immersion. It's a joke, they know it and they're laughing at you for buying it. These people don't appreciate video games as an art form anymore, and really that's just sad. I feel bad for Square. Selling your soul never really works out.

In conclusion, Final Fantasy VII: Remake is a flamboyant testament of self-sabotage. I wish I could say I had the motivation to stick through to the next release being such a fan of the original, but frankly they lost me on this one. Once these losers get rich they get addicted and they stop caring about what they're doing. Don't enable them, don't give them your money.

The camera is god awful, the way the camera and cinematics works was really annoying. I mean your trying to walk/look one way, but its dragging you to look in the direction the game intends for you to go. And the story isn't that good either. it all takes part in midgar tho, and i wasn't really hooked on the story, it was kind of boring to be honest (different from the original). There are similarities here and there with the story of the original. But it has really pointless side quests, pointless bosses (most of them) and really a pointless combat engine. Its too chaotic and hectic, too much going on in battles. I think the original FF7 is still a way better game than this one, because at least to me games are not about graphics. I mean why do we play games in the first place? For graphics? or for "GAME PLAY"? This game wasn't too disappointing since i never played it on release. But when i saw it for 10$, i bought it and said "what the hey" why not. Also i should add, it draaaaaaaags on like nothing i have ever played before.Like i said, it all takes place in midgar and it drags on pointlessly, not really adding anything relevant to the story. This really pales in comparison to the original and doesn't even hold a candle to it. Expand

What I really like about this game is that it follows up the original story, it’s not an exact copy of the original which makes it more exciting. All the other RPG games I’ve played (like Genshin Impact and Persona 5) can’t compare to this one. I really recommend this game for people that follow the story of final fantasy and for new fans of the series, having in mind that it’s almost completely different from the original it makes it better for people that already play since it won’t like playing the original all over again but with better graphics. The world and the environment is fantastic. The characters are brilliant. These elements were the only things that kept me playing. Without these elements at the level of polish they are at I think this game gets a three or a two. But they are carrying this game to a four.

This is a game and has to be rated as a game first and a story second and as a game its poor. I couldn't bare to go near this again

So in conclusion will i recommend this game ? and answer is yes (probably i recommend all games of Square Enix =D) if you looking for something with interesting plot/gameplay/sound/characters that game is your choice. I really wanted to love this, but it's dull and repetiive, with depressing uninspired environments, constantly slowing your walk speed to a ludicrous crawl just to pad the game out, music is westernised and boring except the 'discs' you pick up which you can't hear properly just through a tin-y filter effect. background characters talk over each other so you can't hear anything said. Cloud is not likeable and none of the characters are well voice acted or scripted in the english dub in my opinion. The game simply isn't fun, or if it is it's fun for 30 seconds then back to walking down a long corridor for 25 minutes. They should not have released this as seperate games but as one game and not padded it out. Let's hope the next parts are a big improvement. Expand

What a wasted opportunity. I find this game so dull with absolutely terrible pacing with my overall experience of this game being of frustration and boredom.

Sure the graphics are great, but what’s the point in beautiful graphics when the world is lifeless and not interactive, or, that those graphics are locked behind poorly hidden loading screen areas? Sure, the combat CAN be thrilling,

Sure the graphics are great, but what’s the point in beautiful graphics when the world is lifeless and not interactive, or, that those graphics are locked behind poorly hidden loading screen areas? Sure, the combat CAN be thrilling, but 90% of the time it feels messy. I’ve never felt in control of a combat situation. It’s so tightly ‘on the rails’ that it feels like a VR experience. There is almost 0 exploration because the gaming areas are so small. The voice acting and dialogue are terrible, childish and irritating. The RPG elements are so shallow and a bit pointless. Levelling up weapons with SP points? Sounds great, if you had any incentive to chose a progression path, but you just have to select ALL of the upgrades so what’s the point? Same as equipment, it’s just generic “next version is better” drivel. All of this was fine 20 years ago but not anymore. I think the worst thing about this game is the wasted opportunity. We all know and love the ff7 story, the world and the lore; so why not let us experience it from a new angle? Why not have midgar be an open world experience? Why not have a job/class system? Why not have mechanics for interacting with the world? *sigh* it’s just another lazy game with a premium price tag and I’m not looking forward to any of its expansions or future FF remakes….

Final Fantasy VII Remake is the game we've been waiting for from Square Enix for so long. Atmospheric, interesting and exciting all your attention modern jRPG with an interesting story and spectacular battles. To achieve the ideal, the project only needs more even graphics and all the content from the original release. If you were waiting for a turn-based classic with new graphics you will most likely be disappointed, since the game has changed a lot. Everyone else is happy with the release of the first really powerful single-player release from the internal Square Enix studio for many years. Especially after the failure of Final Fantasy XV.

What matters is still intact, and that’s the heart and soul of one of the greatest stories in video game history. It’s a return to form that has felt a long time in coming, and what’s even better is that there’s still at least two more games of this quality to come...They can’t mess this up, can they?
