Maybe, to someone who hasn't played any Fallout game, Fallout 4 isn't good, thats fine, but we have to look at both audiences before really critiquing the game. We must first agree that this Fallout game has had more commercial hype and popularity than any other. It seems that almost everyone gamer was excited about this game, most never the others. One who loves Call of Duty and Halo might love the action aspects of Fallout 4 but trash the rpg elements of the game. Basically without getting to into it, it seems that those who love the Fallout universe love Fallout 4, while those who never played any of the games or just New Vegas (which wasn't even made by Bethesda and didn't have much to do with any of the main story points) don't think positively about the game. Personally, I am loving it. Expand

The user reviews for this game are very misleading. I would give it a 9 but to balance the stupid 0 scored ill give it 10.
So why is it a 9?
    - Good costumization system
    - Great combat
    - A great open world
    - Great story
    - Good perk system
The only problem is the bugs which isnt that big of a deal

The criticisms on this site of Fallout 4 are so stupid I suspect they are all from competing game companies and not real. The Fallout series has always been amazing. If you didn't like 3, you won't like 4. To me this is the game of the year just like 3 was. Almost perfect. Not even worth mentioning small complaints. SIMPLY THE BEST GAME EVER MADE!

Theres tons of unique and awesome loot to collect that you can mod and turn into your own creation. Theres also a nice minecraft like building system where you have to provide and defend citizens. And can literally build 100's of different things. But that part is completely optional. If you like rpgs, first person shooters, or any of the fallout games from the 3d era or elder scrolls game. I highly suggest you buy this great game. Expand

Ladies & gentlemen this is the best game of year 2015 if you put in the time for it. Really absolutely nothing comes close... not even Witcher 3 in terms of RPG.

A PERFECT 10. Graphics & bugs aint deal breaker to me this game with its shooting + rpg+mod+ strategy elements will suck u in for years!

But despite this Fallout manages to be one of the most immersive games I have ever played, I wake up wanting to jump into this game again. I adore exploring and uncovering the deep world Bethesda has lovingly crafted, and even making my own environments within that set piece in the form of settlements. The combat is leaps and bounds ahead of Fallout 3, the dialogue, though questionable, is in my opinion fantastic, with lip syncing being the only draw back.

So, in conclusion Fallout 4 is Fallout 3 on steroids with much improved mechanics and story that make for an amazing game, but still a Fallout game, so if Fallout 3 isn't your thing this will not be either.

Not sure why the trolls on here are rating it so low. I play on PS4 and it runs/looks great.
Pros: The customization, the crafting, the story (been great so far), the variety of companions, weapons, the map/locations
Cons: the rads, dialogue wheel (on the fence about that). Overall, the game has been great over 35 hours logged and I feel like there's way more stuff to do

At first the game didn't really win me over, the story is kinda plain so far (15hours in), the dialogue choices aren't very interesting, but then rather then just doing quests I did what I would say is the real purpose of the world and I just went out in a random direction and explored and since then I've fallen in love.

The world is full of things to find and do and just walking around an finding an unexpected raider base which happens to have some amazing weapon, finding a delusional ranting robot or running into a side quest I wasn't expecting have all been really fun experiences.

Its great to see Fallout do this element of open world RPG's very very well and while there is room for improvement the game has a lot to offer, especially if you like customising weapons and building bases. I can see myself spending 40 to 50 hours in the game which in Australia means the price is $1.73 to $1.38 per hour of game-play and I'm am more than happy with that return.

Beyond all of the technical aspects of this game, it is the most fun I've had in a long while. Even though I may run into a bug or get caught on the leveling system occasionally, no game that's come out recently has dragged me in quite as strongly as Fallout 4. Every place you find has a ton of secrets and layers to find. The story overall is good but I would not say its the best Bethesda has put out however the faction missions and random side quests you find exploring the wasteland are more fun than the actual main story itself. The settlement creator and weapon modification tool is the real homerun of this game. This tool is so easy to use and fun that you will be scavenging the Commonwealth for hours just to collect Aluminum cans and you will be having fun doing it! At the end of the day this game is what Bethesda has envisioned Fallout to be. Open world to explore, ability to create crazy weapons and villages and the choice of what faction you will pick. All the Trogs that think "the graphics are bad. 1/10" are mistaking this game for something it's not. Fallout and The Elder Scrolls have NEVER really been about graphics and animations so realistic they make people wonder if it is real life, instead they have veer towards aesthetics and atmosphere. It has been about the gameplay and content over all else. Priority 1: Gameplay and content. Priority 2: Story: Priority 3: Graphics.
While the story is a bit same-old, same-old and predictable almost to the point where some parts you wonder if you wrote it, I don't personally think that this should totally bring the game down. It does seem as though Bethesda Softworks have switched priority 2 and 3 around, but maybe that is not too much of a bad thing.

On with the dogmeat of the review. Starting with the bad.

Personally, I know this may draw some Flak, but I think the voiced protagonist isn't exactly a good thing. In a game where I make a character and am supposed to make that character almost an virtual extension of myself, I don't like the fact that someone who sounds nothing like me and may not be feeling the way I feel personally speaks for me. In addition, some times (though rare) the emotions, selections and words that the actor says haven't always been fitting with the conversation so far. I know that is hard to achieve, but it is weird to go from Sarcastic, funny-guy to "Please help me find them!" while practically crying his/her eyes out. Or when you select an option and he seems to say something you weren't expecting. Like "O - What's Bloop?" then he says "I have never heard of that" instead of asking the question. That wasn't an option, just an example. I find I can't connect as well to their story as much as I could to 101 from Fallout 3.
Also, I find the enemies in the beginning are ridiculously over-powered. One of the first missions involves a Deathclaw and Power Armour. Ain't no one got time from that 5 seconds out the Vault. Fortunately, they do ease up, but when the only weapons you can find are piddly hand guns which may as well fire water, it gets quite draining.
Arguably (thought this isn't too bad) the graphics and animations are a bit sub-par for current gen, but considering content, I give that a pass.

    Finally the good stuff.

I'll tell you a story of 1 in-game day in the Fallout 4 to better describe the good points. No spoilers.
I decided, like a boss, to travel and try to unlock as much of the main city as possible. I set out at 9 AM from Diamond city, full of excitement and eager, and immediately regretted it. I marched my way south at first and head-first into a host of Supermutants who very nearly finished me off. I sneaked away from them and breathed a sigh of relief before quickly realizing, I had no clue as to where I was or how to get back to Diamond city.after learning my lesson and now going everywhere in sneak, I decided to make my way East to the coast and just explore my way around the periphery of the City to build strength before delving into the heart. Middle of the day, I encountered a large Raider camp. Taking several out before being spotted, I suddenly realized they were everywhere. Above, behind and all sides. I held my own and after ages of fighting and many Stimpaks later, I came out on top, low on health, ammo and suddenly realizing I was too far from Diamond to return and was thrust into a real fight for survival. Using the weapons and ammo I had scavenged from the Raiders and a few Supermutants they killed while fighting me, I saw the sun was setting. I stopped for a second to soak in the way the sky was illuminated in a warm glow, the columns of shadow coming from the buildings. By the time I realized I should get moving, darkness. Pitch black and the only thing guiding me were sounds of sporadic gunfire and Raider chatter telling me to avoid and area and ominous campfires promising aid and ammo if I could take it. I remained largely in one area over night only venturing around 1 or 2 blocks with caution until I felt tough enough to move 1 block - into disaster. Ghouls came at me from all directions and once they were dispatched, I alerted Raiders who came with a vengeance. I retreated into a Supermutant nest and hid as much as I could while Supermutants, Raiders and a few Ghouls uked it out into the beautiful pink-skies of the morning when I finally saw a chance to run from the Bus I was hiding in and legged it. The only stroke of luck through this whole ordeal was I ran straight into Diamond city. No, practically an Agoraphobic, my character barely leaves the city after that.

Really all three games have their flaws but giving rating a 0 or 1 rating is a childish rant, with excuses like "graphics QwQ" , "no skills QwQwQ" , "lack of important decisions QwQ", what kind of games you play? even games like Dragon Age or Mass Effect doesn´t have a lot of important decisions. You have to follow up the story, the decisions you make, even on the witcher are on the side quest, and on the ending THAT'S ALL, you almost always have to follow the main story line.

I'm going to be fair Fallout 4 deserves a 9 out of 10 cause the companions AI sucks like hell and it´s main story it´s pretty short, but im giving it a 10 just to try to balance all those ranting kiddos giving it 0 rating to this great game.

I prefer to use the VATs combat system primarily, and even 100 hours into the game, every slow motion kill is still extremely satisfying. I became really invested in the settlement building aspect of the game as well, and felt a great sense of pride in the communities that I created in my personal version of the Commonwealth. Looking at some of the user reviews makes me cringe. Never will you ever find a collection of more whiny, spoiled and entitled trolls than some of the ones below. The sad thing is that almost everyone reviewing this game fails to shut the hell up and enjoy it for what it is: an absolutely amazing video game.

Once again, Bethesda has crafted an incredibly addictive, digital masterpiece that blows my mind every time I play it. The gameplay and combat systems are miles ahead of Skyrim or New Vegas, the setting of the Commonwealth is diverse and expansive (especially the Glowing Sea), and many of the side quests are interesting and engaging. I especially love the new crafting system, which is incredibly well implemented and fun mechanic. Gunplay is smooth, fast-paced, and enjoyable, a stark contrast from the clunky skirmishes present in previous Fallout games. The new power armor mechanics add an excellent element to combat and gameplay.

The main story is actually quite interesting for once, and while not close to New Vegas, it surpasses Fallout 3 and Skyrim easily. The moral question on whether or not synths were human was something truly intriguing and made me think about what faction to join. In addition, many of the characters, such as Nick Valentine, were quite quirky and enjoyable.

Of course, as in any Bethesda game, the best things are the little things. Random encounters and memorable side quests are what make games like this great, and many of them were huge improvements over Skyrim side quests. I especially enjoyed the Silver Shroud questline.

However, no game is without its issues, and like most, I was disappointed in the dialogue and voice acting. It could've been so much better, but I don't think it is anything to be too fixated in.

Performance wise, Fallout runs amazingly. Yes, their are plenty of mind-bending glitches but loading times are short, lag spikes are rare and in 20 hours of play time, I've had a grand total of one crash. Graphics are meh, but since I couldn't give a rat's ass about graphics, it does not bother me.

Overall: Fallout 4 is an amazing game that is absolutely worth it's weight in gold. If you want a video game that is incredible fun, and will keep you playing for months, take advice from the critics, and from my review. If you weren't loved by your mother, you can listen to the negative reviews below (but I still wouldn't recommend to do so, and instead give this game a try)

The endings leave something to be desired with very few alternatives. The side quests are few in number yet most are very interesting and unique. Fallout 4's main strengths however are its world and its game play with a great crafting system, unique enemies, and a variety of cool weapons. The companions in Fallout 4 although not very useful are interesting, some offer some of the best quests and backstory in the game. My one major problem with Fallout 4 is the dialogue system I miss New Vegas with its silent protagonist and multitude of choices in the iconic Fallout style. Bethesda made a huge blunder with a voiced protagonist because each quest requires far more work accounting for the shortage in the main game as of now. If Bethesda had left this feature out perhaps they could have used their time to add in more side factions like in New Vegas where some groups like the Boomers or Khans were not essential for an ending. These down sides did not effect my enjoyment in the game and though I do hope future DLC will give the game a fuller feel I would recommend this game to everyone. Expand

(Carla...get your damn Brahmin OUT of my living room!).The dialogue can be disappointing and it's particularly annoying that you often have no idea what your character is going to come out with, as the very cryptic options you're given don't cover it. As a new gamer I can't speak for how good the combat is compared to anything else, but I've found the weapons have a variety of different 'feels' and seem very response to me, I've enjoyed playing around with the many weapon choices and finding my own style, used VATS a lot and, as I've improved, enjoyed not using it too. The main story line isn't epic but good enough that I've been able to play it through three times without getting too bored, and some of the companions and their story's have been utterly engrossing and moving (I'm looking at you Nick Valentine). In fact, the NCP's are in general a likeable bunch and having them around has added a lot to the experience. And there's Dogmeat, what could be better? Other than his propensity for occasionally getting lost - I once spent a whole week, in real time, frantically searching or him in every available moment I had - he is the perfect doggy sidekick and I actually miss him when I return to real life! I've really got into modding the weapons and armor and have had the most fun playing with my power armor collection. The HUGE side story of this game is the settlement building, which for the substantial community of players that have embraced it, is endlessly engrossing and fun, and for that alone you can keep coming back to this game and have new stuff to do, bigger and better settlements to build. Shame about the settlers themselves who are a totally uninspiring bunch who do little but moan and stand on the roof at inopportune times. I wish they could have been better, Bethesda. It's frustrating to have built a fantastic bar/restaurant with all the amenities, great lighting, decor, music etc. for that miserable bunch of gits to sit there like a wet weekend. I'm surprised at people who have complained about the graphics because they may not be the Witcher 3, for example, but are still plenty good enough and I have often found myself stopping in the midst of game play to marvel at the view from the top of Corvega...or from the balcony of my home in Sanctuary Hills. To me, this game is what gaming is all about, something with a bit of heart as well as a fair bit of running around shooting stuff, plenty to explore and a fantastic range of environments to do it in, and good company to do it with. It seems to me that so much of the negative feedback on this game is from people who liked Fallout 3 and New Vegas, and clearly Fallout 4 is a different thing. Shame though, for it to cast such a pall on such an epic contribution for what is isn't rather than acknowledging what it is. UPDATE: ...so, after months & months of waiting and frustration, mods have at last come for Fallout 4. TOO LITTLE, TOO LATE...I've gone out & bought an XBox and the minute it arrives I'll be diving back into Fallout...with a new beginning...new gear...new dialogue...new characters and places to explore....green grass and leafy trees...Dogmeat at my side AND a companion.....I can't wait. But first, I'm going to play Fallout 3 and New Vegas! Thank you, Bethesday. Shame on you, Sony! Expand

The plot is standard for a fallout game , you need to go get 'something' which leads you to getting involved in a broader conflict. In fo1 it was the water chip, in FO3 it was your father, in fonv it was the Platinum Chip. Now it is your son.

The plot is rather strong, with 4 factions. 3 of them are interesting, but one of them falls a small bit short , but they are still solid and don't do much to take away from the overall experience, You will find yourself doing all sorts of quests through the ruins of the commonwealth .

The background lore and sidequests are fantastic, on paper there is not THAT much more sidequests than in fo3 , but in reality they are VERY long and exciting. You will often find yourself spending well over an hour in a sidequest. And bringing you to locations packed with great lore that makes sense.

Gameplay is amazing , the gunplay feels like Destiny which in fact they modelled it after. And you now have the ability to sprint which was missing from all 3d fallouts. Enemies are generaly tough but not bullet sponges and there is many different enemy types and subtypes , Such as Super Mutants,Mirelurks,Molerats,Stingwings,Protectrons,Sentry Bots etc. And there is also a solid settlement mode and a solid crafting mode.

The graphics and sound are also VERY VERY good, fallout has never looked as good and certainly not sounded as good. Every weapon has a different sound and changes according to attachment and enemies shrieks are stunning. It's obvious they put a lot of effort in to voice acting and hand and face gestures because this really stands out. The lighting and textures look 'good' , realistically it's not the most beautiful game in the world. But it certainly is one of the most beautiful open world rpg's.

I first played the original Fallout in 1997 and it's my favorite game of all time. I still play it about once a year, because you can complete it as fast as you want to, and it offers many different approaches to gameplay. TheI first played the original Fallout in 1997 and it's my favorite game of all time. The same basic principle applies to Fallout 4 - you can rush through the main story or you can take your time and just wander the wasteland and build settlements. The main story of Fallout 4 is perfectly decent, but I would not call it exceptional. It's short enough and doesn't get in the way when you want to do other things in the game.
Some people complain that Fallout 4 is more dumbed down RPG-wise compared to Fallout 3 and New Vegas. I find the simplifications welcome and I consider Fallout 4 to inspire an atmosphere that is much closer to the original Fallout, which Fallout 3 and New Vegas failed to do in my opinion. Removing skills and replacing them with perks may seem like a simplification, but in reality it expands the possible approaches to gameplay, because the perk tree is massive, and this wide array of gameplay style options is in the spirit of the original Fallout.
To finish, I would like to say a few words about settlement construction. If this is not your cup of tea, you can skip it and enjoy the game just the same. I created one massive fortress around Sanctuary Hills and a few minor outposts around the wasteland. Now that I completed the game, I can roam the wastes eliminating mutants and raiders, and visit my comrades in arms along the way. It really creates a great recipe for immersion. Overall, I would say that I spent 20% of my time on the story, 40% on settlement building and 40% on sidequests and just wandering the wasteland. Through all the years, I considered the first Fallout to be the best game ever, but the only thing that I wished I could do after “saving the world” was to put all of my massive weapons stockpile to good use, establish my own militia and be a force for progress in the wasteland. Well, now you can do that in Fallout 4. Get this game if you haven't yet. You can play it for 20 or 200 hours before you are done with it, the freedom of choice is yours.

If that’s too hard for you, sorry, maybe you should go back to poking an iPad while drooling on yourself because you’re not a gamer, you’re a consumer: a blind, slobbering idiot that wears Nikes and makes monkey noises at the TV screen.

Of all the open world games I’ve played—and I’ve played all of Bethesda’s and most of Rockstar’s and a number of other disasters put out by garbage dump developers who haven’t the skill, staff, or finances to create genuine open world experiences—this is by far the deepest, most challenging, most fully realized and most enduring. It is another world, plain and simple. It is the ultimate escapism, a pure gaming drug.

At this point, playing anything else feels like a waste of time, a restrictive box that stifles my freedom and my will. I despise game designers and their rigid, uncreative thinking and inability to liberate gamers and let gamers play any game the way they want to. Open world games are among the few that free gamers from the shackles of corporate idiots and of all the open world games this is by far the masterpiece, the crème de la crème, the best of the best.

And although optimization on PS4 Pro has not been achieved, and graphically the game stuck somewhere in 2010-13 from Fallout 4 after 6 years still gives shape to modern games in the open world. Perhaps this is due to the fact that microtransactions and huge soulless empty worlds were not so popular back then. In Fallout 4, the main story is not so important, here is the most important detailed game world, and it has excellent secondary quests. Expand

My only complaints come from the game design itself in the form of managing weight which becomes a real issue and too many settlements which after a while turns into babysitting. I only stayed in Sanctuary but I do like the break it gives by extending the longevity of the game. Cannot recommend highly enough. A must play. Expand

The main quest is better than it's ever been, even with the not-so silent protagonist. Granted their lines could have been a LOT more diverse.
Weapon/Armor customization was cool, I wanted more, but there was still plenty of things to do.
I did miss weapon repair system and the karma points. But I wouldn't drop the score for that, nor would I do it for the lack of REAL mod support for the PS4. That was Sony's issue with the game.

This is Bethesda Game Studio’s most beautiful world yet. I find myself getting lost for hours trying to go from A to B between quest marks, because I saw a marker pop up on my map that looked interesting.

The combat is still floaty but tighter than ever. For the first time I’m able to playing this game more like a shooter, rather than completely relying on VATS, which it’s adds a more tense feel now that it slows time rather than fully stopping it.

Fallout 4’s story had me fully engaged and invested more so than any other BGS game. I’m normally very formulaic in the way I play these games. Side quests and additional content first, before completing the story and ending with (Hopefully) a bang. And on that, this game delivered one of the most interesting stories that felt like it was hand-made for me.

These games are true masterpieces of design.

The settlement system is the best of the new innovations, HOURS of optional fun to be had there if you want it, though I also appreciate the depth of weapon customization, which is deeper and more tied to player skills/perks than it was in Fallout New Vegas, where I enjoyed the customization as well. I loved being able to permanently affect the Wasteland how -I- wanted to by crafting settlements and kitting out the settlers inhabiting them. The Wasteland isn't just being rebuilt because some story quest tells me it'll happen after the game, it's happening RIGHT NOW because I'M doing it.

Feral Ghoul ugly in many ways, but beneath its iffy exterior beats the heart of one helluva great RPG. Get past the graphics deficiency, and the sheer thrill of Fallout 4’s combat, crafting options, and exploring will hold your attention for months. [January 2015, p64]

Fallout 4 leans to the Shooting side of things. It strips down the gameplay from the actual RPG elements and offers a meta-nuclaer shooting gallery which of course keep its charm and gameplay wealth but also feels a little too friendly for the new comers. The Base builder mode is unnecessary, boring and irritating. Unfortunately, overall, there are no steps forward for this Nuclear Holocaust Behemoth of the video games industry. Only steps sideways.
