Fallout was never about a controlled experience that feeds you content step by step, i feel it was always about observing and exploring instead of participating in a rollercoaster ride. With all the shortcomings the game has - and there are plenty of them - i'm happy they did it that way. Expand

I went with an 8 out of 10 in the end as judged on its own merits its a very good game but others will rightly be less forgiving of the lack of progress the series has made.

Fallout 4 is divisive among fans, and I can understand why. While the story is interesting enough, the dialogue suffers due to the flat performance of the protagonist's voice actor (I played as a male, not sure about female performance) and the lack of depth to conversation options. The game effectively tries to be Mass Effect and it isn't very good at it. Fallout 3 seemed to have a conversation option for every kind of player in every kind of situation. Fallout 4 gives vague commands that result in the protagonist saying things that you never intended for them to say. These commands are are basically always the same: Positive response, negative response, sarcastic response, or request more info. The quality of conversation suffers as a result.

Fallout 4 also eschews some of the traditional mechanics of the series. Gone is the karma system, stat allocation, and equipment degradation of previous titles. While I enjoyed the new perk tree system and didn't really miss the karma factor, I was disappointed that repairing equipment was removed. In a post-apocalyptic game with a focus on crafting and scavenging, this seemed like a no-brainer, as it really adds a level of depth to the immersion. I would have at least appreciated an option to turn it on or off.

Settlements are another huge new addition to the series, but the system has a lukewarm implementation. It's truly addictive to upgrade a settlement and watch it grow. I've spent much more time on settlements than I ever thought I would. However, the system makes demands of the player a la The Sims. You seemingly are always being tasked to go build a new one, although you are free to ignore these quests if you like. The trouble comes from your need to manage the resources and happiness of each settlement, which can be annoying. More so is the fact that any settlement can come under attack at any time, and if you don't respond in a timely manner, the settlement suffers damage and the happiness of the inhabitants goes down. You may be on an important quest halfway across the map, unwilling or unable to simply drop what you're doing to help. More importantly, defense rating is a factor. Why did I build 10 turrets for a tiny farm if they can't old off a gang of half a dozen raiders? It makes no sense.

These are the largest criticisms I've seen leveled at the game, and they're all valid. However, I don't think they detract enough from the experience to stop it from being good. The rest of the game is pure Fallout. You wander off into a huge wasteland loaded with a nearly endless amount of places to see, characters to meet, quests to undertake, items to scavenge, and fun to be had. The tried and true Bethesda method of having something new and exciting every 5 feet to distract you from what you were previously doing remains strong in Fallout 4. This is a game that's very easy to get lost in.

Improvements have also been made to combat and weapon customization. While it doesn't handle nearly as smoothly as a Call of Duty game, Fallout 4 has solid shooting mechanics that allow you to play it more like an FPS if you want to. A lot of my experience with the game was playing it like a shooter and only utilizing VATS (the series' famous targeting menu) when I needed it. Weapons also allow for a variety of customization options and although many of the upgrades feel same-y after a while, it still allows for diversity and progression in your arsenal, especially when you get into special weapons with unique perks.

Scavenging and crafting are also a key focal point of the game, and thanks to the upgrade system, new approach to power armor, and settlement building, almost everything you collect will end up being useful in some form. Sometimes the most significant thing you'll find in a location isn't a new weapon or armor piece, but a hefty supply of a specific material you desperately need. For me, scavenging became a meticulous and addictive process that provided a meaningful feedback loop.

Fallout 4's graphics have been criticized, but I never understood why. I never expected Uncharted levels of quality, and given the appearance of Fallout 3 and New Vegas, the visuals here are a significant upgrade, in my opinion.

While I don't enjoy Fallout 4 quite as much as I did Fallout 3, I still think it's a great game that's provided me with a ton of genuine enjoyment. What it gets wrong isn't enough to take away from what it does right. After all, Dogmeat can't die in this one, and that's worth something. If you liked the previous games, you may feel like there's a few things missing from this one, but I'm willing to wager that you'll still have a great time wandering the wasteland of Boston

Fallout 4 has been given a "settlement creation" ability which gives the game near endless gameplay.

Fallout 4's story is high and low point. The base story is actually quite good, most of the factions you can join are great but there's no roleplaying to be had here. You are given four options to choose from vs past games near limitless choices.
Want to be a villain? Nope! If you want that you'll have to pick up a dlc.

Another major complaint I have is they re-used Fallout 3's radio music and the new DJ is awful.
I do have to note turning off the music and listening to the new ambient soundtrack is amazing.

Although by far the best improvement has to be the gunplay, in previous fallout games i would rely heavily on the vats system, but i find myself using it about 50% of the time.

So why only 8 out of ten? Because of the bugs and glitches. To be fair i haven't encountered that many myself, but considering how long bethesda said they were working on the game, and the fact that they claimed it was gold (ready to be shipped) almost a month before its release date, there is absolutely no excuse for some of the bugs and the fact that there was a day one patch for the game. I love bethesda but that is unacceptable in my eyes. Still that being said there is no doubt in my mind that this a sure win for game of the year.

Fallout 4 is a step back from Fallout 3 in terms of spectacle and ditches some of the mechanics that made its predecessor work so well. But, it's still Fallout and more of the same. It's a fun game for 25 hours or so, but definitely doesn't have the staying power like Fallout 3,4, New Vegas, or Skyrim. Hopefully add on content can add depth to this fully fleshed world

The beginning of the game feels way too rushed and they don't explain a lot like how VATS actually works. The story gets better when you reach Diamond City.

This is a tricky game to review. Taken as is in its own right, it is a perfectly good game. I enjoyed playing it, there was plenty to do and it presents good value for money. But taken in context as a sequel in a brilliant franchise, it is yet another example of developers dumbing games down to try and appeal to as many people as possible. Fallout 3 is one of the greatest games ever made. Part FPS part sandbox RPG, I really felt like I had the freedom to do what I liked. Be a good guy? No probs. be an evil barsteward, no worries. You could even blow up a whole town if you felt that way inclined! This one seems to have taken away that freedom. I felt shoehorned into making decisions towards the end, none of which actually made any significant difference to the world you are exploring. Plus, with the current technology and power we are currently enjoying, I expected a smarter game. I should not be able to take a companion from one faction into a rival faction's territory without any consequence, but I did. If I take a Brotherhood of Steel companion into the Railroad headquarters I expect him to react, I expect it to trigger repercussions, but no, there was nothing. It completely undermines the story, and with the current capabilities of this generation of consoles it's unacceptably lazy programming.

In Fallout 3, you are presented with really serious decisions which will change some things forever, and I love that. Here, whatever you decide doesn't seem to make much difference, and when you finish the main story arc it all seems a bit pointless. The game becomes little more than a slightly deeper than average FPS, and not the adult RPG it should be.

It's not all bad- I actually like the addition of settlement building and maintaining, and some of the characters are great. I don't think it deserves some of the low scores it has got on Metacritic. As a game in its own right it is great fun- I really enjoyed it. But once completed, I went back to playing Fallout 3 and promptly realised that it is not a patch on that.

Now, the main story itself was ok, there were parts were the game peaked my interest and also parts where I just wanted to get the game over with. I know there are multiple endings, but the ending cutscene for the decision I chose was atrocious, and a slap in the face for me. I was going to try multiple endings, but when that end game cut scene rolled, I stoped playing this game and has yet to pick it back up. But, back to other things, the gunplay was good, could do with more variety; but it was good nonetheless. I liked the rpg system, it was simple, but I enjoyed grinding to "perfect" the character to my playing style. I enjoyed the random loot in this game, but once again, it could be more varied; if you played as much as me, then at one point you've seen all the "legendary" weapons variations there is. This game also does a great job in making you feel like you're in control, when in reality you're not (the ending is proof, for me it is anyways). To end, it's a great game for grinding and exploring/ looting, but it could be way better than what it is. Expand

The game does take a while to get interesting, I'm writing this with about a week of playing, and my character is level 12; only now does the game start to show its strengths and difficultly. The mobility and shooter mechanics are great and the menus are intuitive after a while of play. The Mine-craft like building of settlements is fun after you've played too many quests in row. The crafting is deep and if you loved that from Skyrim, then you'll love it here too. 3. Fun character perks and weapon/armor customization. You can build a character based on your play style. I went for a stealth-ninja-rifleman build. Had the most fun with suppressed snipers, rifles, shotguns, etc.

    4. Engaging main story. I used this as an anchor for my gameplay, instead of exploring aimlessly. I'll typically start a main questline and then branch out to sidequests along the way coupled with exploring whatever catches my eye.

    5. Unique cities/towns/settlements with vibrant communities, begging to be explored.

    6. Uncluttered user interface. No intrusive icons on screen to break immersion.

    7. Beautiful art direction and music.

    Cons:
    1. Awful, absolutely awful character models. Time for a new engine Bethesda.

    2. Hacking computer terminals caused my blood pressure to go up the roof! Change the hacking system please for Fallout 5.

    3. Repeated quests that's just there for filler and XP. At least indicate to us that these quests are inexhaustible. Early in the game, I kept doing the Cleanse the Commonwealth side-sidequest thinking it will end but it didn't! What a waste of time. They have these kinds of inane quest types for each faction. Cut this out Bethesda, go for quality not quantity next time.

    4. Poor companion AI. Will always block your way in the doorway, detected when you're trying to sneak, and come on screen during dialog.

    5. Too many loading screens.

    6. Poor dialog options.

    7. Settlement building. Although to be fair, you can ignore this completely. What I hated though was that you'll be prompted to defend your settlements in the middle of a main quest, etc which is annoying.

All in all, I enjoyed Fallout 4 immensely, and found myself devoting my game time solely for this for a good one month. Very immersive and compelling game. If you like games like Witcher 3, Borderlands, Far Cry 3/4, Skyrim, Deus Ex, then you'll definitely love the Fallout universe.

The game isnt as bad as people make it out to be and it confuses me a bit because fallout3 was a lot more "barebones" FPS than this game. I am down right BAFFLED that people who only ever played fallout3 are saying this game doesnt meet their standards as fallout3 is still the weakest in the series while still being a solid game.

Also those people who are saying it "doesnt take elements from new vegas" when it in fact takes a lot of combat and gameplay mechanic elements from it that operate in the background.

Also on account of people saying "the characters are horribly written" i strongly disagree, The character Nick is by far the best character bethesda has written IN YEARS.

Fallout 3 was literally barebones, fallout new vegas added on to that experience and made it better.
Fallout 4 isnt a direct upgrade from fallout new vegas but rather a branching path that meets somewhere in the middle. This is a great game with long play time and plenty to do. the 0/10s are trolls who bought into hype culture.

game ranking is F1,F2,FNV,F4 and F3 in last.

Don't buy this game now and wait for the price to drop and buy it cheap. Cheap price for a cheap game. I'm not gonna repeat all that is said in the bad reviews, read them, it's all there. 1) Bethesda should fire all team. There is a clear lack of ambition and competence.

    Gameplay:
Fallout 4 has updated gameplay aspects in nearly all respects! The RPG elements of the game have never been as apparent. The crafting system works well and allows you to craft guns and armor. You can also grow your own settlements, where you can build a plethora of buildings and crafting stations. All of the crafting is created by the amount of junk found in the Commonwealth.

You can also grow your own settlements, where you can build a plethora of buildings and crafting stations. All of the crafting is created by the amount of junk found in the Commonwealth. Particular items need specific parts in order to be created. Gunplay has improved dramatically with an updated V.A.T.S system that is far more aesthetically pleasing than previous installments. Enemy encounters are a bit more challenging with the introduction of "legendary" enemies, who are far stronger than normal enemies. The companion system has also been improved and they will react positively or negatively depending on the players' actions throughout the adventure. Although there have been many improvements, there have been a few questionable decisions in the game. The inclusion of only 4 factions makes the game feel closed off, especially since 3 of the factions directly impact the storyline. The absence of the karma system from New Vegas is noticeable. Although there were many improvements, the quest system has remained stagnant and wasn't improved upon.

    Story:
The player character is alive in October 2077, right before the nuclear bombs are dropped, ending civilization as they know it. However, the character and their family, head into vault 111, where a test is secretly being held amongst the vault dwellers.

    Graphics:
Fallout 4's graphics are serviceable, but Bethesda should applauded for their impressive lighting and attention to detail. Critics who claim the series' graphics are terrible are people who have never played any installment in the series or know what the series is truly about. The Creation engine has definitely provided Fallout with an updated aesthetic.

    Verdict:
Fallout 4 is a must-play game for any fan of the western RPG. Veterans of the series will be glad to know that there have been many improvements in gameplay. Any new player to the series would be introduced to the most improved installment in the series. I highly recommend this game!

Fallout 4 is simply just a great game, that offers you so much to do in its large open world and is a joy to play every time you play it. It is also worth mentioning that Fallout 4 has an improved story and more varied and all around better companions that just helps make this game even better, and should be played by anyone who enjoys open world games.

Calling it fallout 3,5 does not make the game bad. Honestly, if you loved fallout 3 you will love fallout 4. There are improvements but there are not groundbreaking. The gun play, graphics and animation has all seen improved but it is not the huge improvement many of us expected. One thing I did not like is the dumbing down of the rpgs elements. Like any other other bethesda game lately, it feels like they focus more and more on action/adventure then rpg aspect of their games. The story this time is more intriguing than the last time and some of missions are really cool to play. There is different type of factions you can join and they all have their own quest-line.
The game has few cool added features like crafting your own settlements and moding every weapon. But overall the changes and improvements are so little I cant help to feel a bit disappointed. I expected fallout 4 to be a 10/10 game, the game has so much going for it but in the end I feel like it bethesda played a bit to safe. That is why I rate this game 8/10, it is a great game don't get me wrong. But it won't have the same impact as fallout 3 or skyrim had when they launched. Pros (the ones that spring to mind right now)

    - Better VATS: now you can't simply stop time, you can only slow it down. I think this is more balanced.

    - Better levelling: the system is built so you cannot max out individual skills immediately, and all perks can be upgraded. I personally prefer it this way. The downside is that certain locations remain unavailable until your character is able to unlock certain high level perks, such as lockpicking or hacking.

    - Improved looting. This is so important I cannot stress it enough. It's now now much, much quicker than before

    - Followers: your relationship with them can be built to the point that eventually they will give you a special perk and there are specific missions you can do with them if they trust you enough.

    - Weapons don't degrade and they can be fully modified. Same goes for armor.

    - Power armor is now a completely new and very cool game experience.

    - Shooting without VATS now feels much more realistic and satisfying, the fps experience is enhanced. Using melee weapons too

    - Settlements: you can create and run them. It's fun and gives a sense of really making a change in the commonwealth

    - Dogmeat doesn't die within 2 minutes of meeting him

    Cons

    - Graphics are below the level expected from current gen games

    - Lots of bugs, I won't list them. The game crashed 3 times and froze twice on me so far. Hopefully future patches will improve this

    - No karma. I see no valid reason for removing the karma system, although followers will react to your moral choices

Solid game, great replay value, addictive and fun. Ideal for people who can't really aim with a controller and still want to kick some asses.

Compared to other franchises, Fallout does well, the whole settlement building changes the game a lot and gives importance to looting, and you know you love looting everything. Every little cup of coffee has a use (other than selling it for ammo),

Every little cup of coffee has a use (other than selling it for ammo), as you will need steel, wood, and stuff to build your settlement, repair your power armor. Power armor being the second big thing, mostly if you go the scientific way

Great replay value too, the map is not huge but big enough to allow yourself some discoveries in each gameplay. The perks are game changers too, you can be full barbarian or an intellectual sarcastic b****, solve quests differently, join different factions.. the usual Fallout stuff

Only 8/10 because of the glitches, bugs, mainly in settlements, trade routes not working properly, and for a very short and predictable main quest.

Still 8/10 because I've spent hours on this (half of it building walls and plants for no reason). The radioactive sea (southwest) is remarkable, for the rest, it's the usual wasteland and ruined cities, like it or not.

A little bit down the road in the story you get your first (of many, oh so many) settlements and the buildtool is introduced. Now while it first the tutorial limits itself to learning you about the basic needs within Sanctuary, later on you stumble, upon settlements without adequate housing and you quickly notice how flawed this buildtool really is.. Why not a topdown view?! A grid? Anything other than this crap?

Now as you progress through the story another problem emerges : framerate issues. Especially in the conclusion of the different faction arcs you experience framerate that is close to gamebreaking.
The story, and this is a personal matter of course, is rather weak compared to previous installments.
I was also missing an evil faction to join or support.

Now, this might seem like I'm hating on the game but I don't.. The wandering, exploring and looting is as fun as it will ever be.
Modding weapons is great. Legendary weapons are great.
Some of the restyled enemies look cool.
The perk system has been looked at, the level cap removed allowing you to become the ultimate wanderer.
The power suit as a battle-harnass is pretty cool.

All in all I had fun with this game and it is without a shadow of doubt an addition to your collection, but as it is it doesnt merry a score above 8.

There is also fun builds focusing on VATS. Third would have to be the new settlements. This is a fun addition to the game that you can spend many hours on. It also makes sense that as the savior of the wasteland you would build settlements for people to live in safely.

Okay as far as the bad I will admit the graphics look dated but Bethesda is giving us mods which will surly include texture packs. Another big issue is they got rid of Reputation and Karma... these were vital in maintaining responsibility in actions. If you travel alone especially you will notice no negative effects for stealing at all unless your caught which of course if your getting caught stealing your playing wrong.

If they mod in or patch in some improved textures and the addition of karma with town reps the game will be near perfect.

With Nick, Piper, Deacon, John Hancock and Kellgog we got great backstories. I can relate to these characters and feel compassion for them. This is for me a sign for good character creation. Also the factions and their leaders are magnificent. While I don't like some aspects I can at least see where they come from (except maybe one I wont spoil). Again you must chose a fraction at a late point in the game like in New Vegas. The sidequests are also a strength with the Silver Shroud quest-line as my favorite while many others that are also remarkable like Nicks Detective cases, The secret of the Cabot house and Last voyage of the USS Constitution as close second. Some go hand in hand with the dark humor of the Fallout series. There is one dialog where a still working security robot wants you to identify yourself. You can respond with insults to a humorous result. I am in the minority here but I like the crafting, construction elements and settlements. The controls work well or lets say as in all new Fallout games. I am really satisfied with the game. Now to the parts I dislike. The bugs are (slightly) more numerous than in Fallout 3 and New Vegas. The new level up system is a hit and miss. While I like that I can potentially learn everything part of the fun in previous games was to create your own build and style. Some fan favorite abilities got removed. I hate that Preston always have uninteresting random quests. I would have liked the character but each time I get near him I have to save a settler from stupidity. I defended all settlements in a way that nothing should harm them and they have enough of everything there but they always find a way to get captured or lost. The power armor is now useless for me. There is no tread serious enough for me to waste fusion cores. Overall this is a bit different but a true Fallout game or experience. I enjoyed it and will give 8/10. Well here we are, Fallout 4 is finally out to the masses and we've all no doubt spent countless hours creating our character, exploring the world, looking for junk in every single dilapidated building and cupboard, drawer, dead body etc....

So let me start this by saying I have played all of FO3 and FONV as well as Skyrim and many other RPG's both new and old. I've also spent roughly 10 hours in FO4 so far, which is by no means a long time. Especially considering my first 2 hours were spent with the character creation screen and then looting everything in sight upon leaving the vault.

It feels very "familiar". It feels like a prettier version of previous Fallout games, this might be bad to some and good to others. For me it is OKAY. I am not fussed either way, but it does feel a little bit stale to be completely honest.

From a technical perspective the game clearly looks like a last gen re-fresh, don't get me wrong - it can be rather beautiful at times and the game world is lovely fleshed out with detail, but the closer you look the more rubbish you see at times. Some characters are beautifully rendered and animated, then others look like their face is melting and a blind person wrote their animation codes with lip sync and facial animation looking rather horrific. Technically it is not ground breaking nor wonderful, but it is perfectly serviceable and should be a good baseline for future bethesda games.

I will say however that it suffers from catastrophic FPS drops on the PS4, in the first section as you're walking around the vault I experienced somewhere in the region of 15-20fps just by stepping in and out of the chryo-chambers. Then at other times it would just stutter for a second and completely jar you out of the world. Fortunately I have not experienced any crashes or game breaking problems (YET).

On the gameplay and story front, I guess the best I can say is that it feels like every other FO game I have played. Which again to some is good and others will be bad. The customisation options and ability to create/have your own bases to build is great and will appeal to the people out there who love this kind of thing. The storyline and side quests all feel very familiar again, I won't spoil anything for obvious reasons, but it doesn't feel as impactful as the Witcher 3 or even GTA5 to certain extents.

Overall FO4 is a good game, it is not without its flaws and it will appeal to a lot of people. But I cannot help but feel that is is somewhat tarnished by the big bethesda name, in that, most people can see them doing no wrong / the hype surrounding FO4.

I used the word familiar a lot in describing FO4. That is pretty much what I can say about it in a nutshell. It is a familiar game set in a familiar world with a familiar storyline and familiar way of progressing through the world. To me that is OKAY, to others it will be and is cause for annoyance and to some it will be amazing.

So, here we have it at last, Fallout 4. I have now about 650+hours in the game, and i am currently at level 108. Finished the story and most likely almost every side quest there including the recently released Automatron DLC.

My toughts about the game, this is where things get a bit tricky. I so much wanted to like the game, because i waited so long for it, but on the other hand i can't ignore what Bethesda did to the game i got used to with Fallout 3 and especially with Obsidian's Nev Vegas. So to make it short:

    Positives:

+ Graphics are better, there is do denying it
+ Sound and audio overall is excellent
+ Game works lightyears better than Fallout 3 & NV
+ Shooter..ing mechanics actually work this time around
+ There are some good characters in the game
+ World is filled with points of interest and places to explore
+ The building mechanics are a nice plus
+ Automatron added more meat to the allready nice building mechanics
+ The new survival-mode is definitely a step to the right direction (a big plus)
+ Definitely worth the money, considering the time i have sunk into the game
+ Has a ton of replay value
+ Seemingly quite frequent content updates and patches

    And to the negatives:

    - The overall presentation feels a little unfinished, tough it seems to get better via patches
    - Some heavy alpha effects may, in some cases, kill the performance of the game
    - The music in the game, or rather the lack of it is a bit disappointing
    - The story is.. well.. sob story of the century
    - Player choise has been taken away almost completely
    - Player actions have no consequences, excluding the few story related decisions
    - Majority of characters are immortal, and some of them really get on my nerve
    - Lack of interesting and actually challenging enemies, like cazadores "cough"..
    - Lack of interesting and unusual events, like we had with wild wasteland trait etc.
    - Lack of unique quests that made the FO3 and NV so much more enjoyable
    - Lack of interesting characters. DLC seems to add more tough.
    - Lack of proper dialogue options and the overall dialogue system is absolutely horrible
    - No option to disable character voice acting alltogether
    - The RPG-elements of the game are butchered to oblivion, except Oblivion was more of a RPG than this
    - Skills, you actually earn by various activities are gone, replaced by base skill attributes (S.P.E.C.I.A.L) and perks chart
    - Any content directed to more mature audiences are gone
    - Romance mechanic feels really shallow
    - Monotonous selection of clothing
    - Legendary weapons don't feel special/rare enough, and are too easy to obtain
    - Radiant quests clearly suffer from a lack of effort
    - Building mechanics lack in content, tough future DLC seemingly adds more
    - Settlers have only few tasks, it eats up any leftovers of the allready minimal immersion
    - The AI is often quite wonky, especially when it comes to settlers

So there you have it.. The list would proprably be several pages long if all was to be added. So overall i feel like, as long as the game is played as a open world action shooter with some rpg-mechanics/elements, it's quite enjoyable. But as a Fallout game, it most definitely falls a bit short.

The biggest issue with this game is the new dialogue system which isn't great and can hurt the story for some players, especially those invested in the lore. This Fallout emphasises gameplay over story in its innovations. The gunplay has been significantly improved and the enemies are competent when their A.I isn't completely broken. (Please remember this is still a Bethesda game, so please expect some B.S to happen while playing.) Despite this new shift, the main story is still fascinating and the Commonwealth is a huge map filled with mysteries and interesting side stories to discover. Definately worth buying, especially since the upcoming DLC looks cool as hell.

But...... this game misses on its most important aspect, the roleplaying. Your actions don't really matter at all here, and the dialogue wheel and new dialogue system doesn't help one bit. You never feel like you're making your own story because truly you are not, thats basically 4 generic choices in every dialogue ( Yes, No, Info, Sacastic/funny joke ), and the worst is that you don't get those exclusive skill dialogues, only speech matter here. Other thing that bugs me alot is the complete removal of skills and the karma system, there is no level cap so eventually you will become god by unlocking all the perks. The other two weak points are the generic ''find your son'' story and the **** glitches. I'm not saying that the overall game is bad, it's just misse on alot of aspects that alot of people were looking for, it's pretty dissapointing that now that the shooting is finally good they **** it up on the RPG aspect, really a shame Expand

I know a lot of people were frustrated that the game was dumbed down in order to become more appealing to casual gamers, and although that is a shame, it's no reason to downrate the game into the negatives, purely based on being let down according to your expectactions. The story is pretty solid throughout but to be honest, I felt at a loss after completing the main campaign. Sure, you have a plethora of side missions to do...but it just seemed like they were either too repetitive or bland. War never changes as they say and at it's core Fallout 4 is the same as Fallout 3 and New Vegas. But just as NV brought new ideas to the playstyle and left others behind, so Fallout 4 has followed suit. A lot of the critical issues being raised seem to span from personal preference rather than actual broken or badly executed game ideas. For example I was always slightly disappointed thatWar never changes as they say and at it's core Fallout 4 is the same as Fallout 3 and New Vegas. But just as NV brought new ideas to the playstyle and left others behind, so Fallout 4 has followed suit. A lot of the critical issues being raised seem to span from personal preference rather than actual broken or badly executed game ideas. For example I was always slightly disappointed that in 3 and especially NV you could anally your dialogue options first before choosing and so you often had a way to get around conversation issues or even back out and come back at a later date. Now with the new dialogue system not only can you concentrate more on what is being said (rather read) and what you can see but conversations can become much more fluid and I feel it gives much more replay value. Often in the previous games I quick flipped through dialog as I felt there was no need to engage or listen to it instead speed reading the choices and choosing the best written one to get my goal. I haven't yet felt that the choices put before me lead me along the wrong conversation path.
In this day and age of super-uber graphics it is easy to get hung up on the looks of the game. For me it looks nice but I am lucky in that I can run it on Ultra settings without any problems. I can also understand a Bethesdas choice of creating a level cross platform playing field - the same game on any system and hopefully this will pay great dividends when official modding comes along if this can also be cross platform. BUT it is my opinion that by doing this they have hamstringed PC users and I do not think this was the right way to go. If you have spent your hard earned money on powerful graphic cards you want to make the most of them and Bethesda has instead forced the majority of the work onto the CPU which has caused significant issues for PC games who in truth don't have machines that are that old, but still are having issues running the game smoothly.
Having controller support out of the box is a boon, but the fact that some keyboard controls are hardwired is just lazy of the developer, there is no excuse for it and this needs to be patched soon.
Crafting and building is very nice and much more intuitive and fun than the modding system in New Vegas. The staged piece armor is also nice, but anyone who has played mod in Fallout 3 or NV will know this has been in the engine for over 7 years. It shows how good the game engine was back then and it is nice that they finally get a chance to show off its bells and whistles, but I still think it could have been improved more. Plasticine looking ears and trousers that don't look wet when you walk through water are things that have been achieved in previous games that are now 2 years old. Also some of the textures look low quality and as a result the game lacks graphical polish. While we can accept that time and resources are an issue, did they really have to spend time putting in multiple kitten pictures to hang on your wall when this could have been spent improving some key textures? I for one would have been more than happy to wait for a small DLC that covered furniture.
Some people have complained about getting Dogmeat, Codsworth and the Power Armor too early, but no one really forced you to use them and also for those who know the franchise, so many people on the older games went straight for these items/companions so now they are much easier to get to form the start, which is just the developer responding to player choice. The bottom line is that its a Fallout game, with masses of things to explore and do, and a massive focus on the story. But it lacks the polish that should have been possible in the last 7 years, and so I can only give it 8 out of 10.

So what is good in fallout 4?
    - The gameplay is suberb, the weapons feel and look great!
-The crafting system is another good point, it is vast, every time that i upgraded my plasma rifle i felt like invencible.
    - The companions are really interesting! In skyrim e never had one becouse they lacked personality and emotions, in Fallout 4 that is different, each one of them as a unique personality!
    - The story for me was reaaally interesting and ****
-Each location on the map is different from the others, is unique, with very cool looting.
-The graphics (yes the graphics), for me the ambients were really well designed and the graphics overral were great.

    Now the bad points:
    - The companions al is horrible....they rarely are helpfull, don't try to sneak with them!
    - The voiced protagonist, for me it was one of the worst aspects of fallout 4, i don't like to have a voiced protagonist because i like to create an assassin/bad character and the voice of the sole survivor **** it up, it broke great part of the immersion that i was expecting for a game like this.
-The commonweath isn't very interesting, the commonwealth look always the same, there aren't any mountain areas, no swamps, no forests (ok thats because of the radiation that kills everything), it is just wasteland or the big boring city of boston (in the game of course).
-The factions, i didn't like the fact that the Bos or railroad questline was dependant of the progression in the main story, i prefered the skyrim way with independent guilds

Overall i really liked the game, however i was a bit letdown, it wasn't as immersive as skyrim was to me, but still it is a great game and i can't deny that i already spent 160 hours in it :)

The story seems to be somewhat interesting but I have not even scratched the surface which in itself is a good feeling because there is an abundance of stuff to do. The graphics do feel lacking and i have noticed a few glitches but nothing to ruin my game play.

If you are a fan of fallout and enjoy those games then this is a game for you. If you are expecting to be blown away by new features and huge changes to the core of the game then you will probably be disappointed. The graphics, although much better than F3s, weren't as good as you would expect with a next gen game however this is not a major problem and can either be solved through mods or simply getting used to it. My major issue that holds it back is that the overall feel of the game is just very similar to fallout 3; the saying "if it ain't broke don't fix it" is true but innovation is also important.

Overall i would say that this is definitely worth buying if you enjoyed/loved/liked the previous fallouts including Obsidian's FNV and to any gamers who liked RPGs in general because it's a great game. Just don't expect something like the jump from MGS4 to 5.

How one can say that about Fall Out 4 is beyond me. It would be like giving 0/10 to Beethoven’s Fifth or Queen’s Bohemian Rhapsody, simply because you don’t like Beethoven or Queen. A lot of people appear to be registering their disappointment that it either fails to meet expectations (that they have created for themselves) or that it is not a ‘true’ Fall Out game.

But let’s look at the various elements:

Graphics: not mind-blowing, but hardly terrible. The aesthetic – open wasteland, piercing blue sky etc - reminds me a little of Rage on last generation. On PS4 it looks like a re-mastered version of a PS3 game: not quite last gen, not quite current gen. That is of course a shame – and we all know that The Witcher 3 has set a new bar; similarly, the now-standard mechanism of a prologue in a confined area followed by an open-world reveal is growing a little tired, and nothing quite matches 'that' moment in Oblivion. But somewhere around 6 or 7 is surely the minimum.

Immersion: the sense of time and place, and alternative history backstory, is, as ever, well-constructed, albeit a little rushed (especially the opening – if we are to invest in the characters, and what has been lost, then more time was needed). There is detail hidden away if you care to look (I wonder how many people don’t even read all the terminal entries in the prologue section, or note the retro-game built-into one of them, or see the attention to detail in the remains of houses).

Combat: never a Bethesda strong point, particularly melee, and a little more innovation around the VATS system would have been nice. But the point of the game is that it is quite possible to achieve a significant amount without ever really entering combat. And this is why some criticism is too harsh. It is inevitable that the more ways there are of moving through a game, the less polished any one element will be relative to a game that focuses more obviously in one direction.

RPG elements: a major criticism appears to be ‘dumbing down’ (curse these developers for wanting to sell a few more copies at a time when games can cost more to develop than Hollywood blockbusters). In fairness, it has perhaps been over-simplified. In my view, Skyrim got the balance just about right (anyone who played Oblivion with a stat-tracking Excel spreadsheet open will know what I mean). The attempt to compensate comes via crafting and the settlement feature – and this is always a divisive element.

Glitches: an inevitable part of the Bethesda universe (their QA has never been great, but their games really do give rise to more potential scenarios than almost any other game); and this is nowhere near as broken as PS3 Skyrim on release, for example. Could it have done with another 6-12 months? Probably (but accountants and share-holders tend to get twitchy).

So, somewhere around 7/10 or 8/10 would appear objectively reasonable. The 0/10s are not objective appraisals of the game ‘as it is’, but reflective of reactions based on other things which people have then allowed to inform their entire opinion.

Many of the things they had previously promised were not included in the final product which kinda sucks. The story can feel dull at times and slow. The fact is that it's basically the same old thing as Fallout 3, just a different story and some new additions thrown in there. The graphics aren't great but they surely aren't terrible. Character's faces can look really ugly at times but everything else seems to be alright. And it's not like Fallout New Vegas was anything spectacular for 2010. The gunplay is very fun and pretty addicting, I have no complaints there, and the crafting system is pretty good (although sometimes it gets annoying when things don't fit into places correctly). Overall it is a good game, and a good addition to the Fallout franchise, but before you buy it you might want to wait until it is patched and up to standards. I don't agree with most of these ratings all at 0, and I know all those people aren't going to agree with me either, but I think the reason all these people are so butthurt about it is because there was way to much hype for this game, and the final product failed to meet that hype. I have been thoroughly enjoying the game so far at about 10 hours in, and the thing is that if you judge the game based of the other Fallout games quality then people will say it sucks, but on it's own, it's pretty good. It's not bad. I really like the new settlement feature but they just kind of throw everything at you right away with barley any tutorials. It took me 45 minutes to build to get the walls of my first building to line up. Pro tip: build the floors first. Just look online for settlement tips, it will make your life easier.

It's basically the same as Fallout 3 but with some improvements and new features. If your expecting the masterpiece that it was hyped to be you'll probably be disappointed. Apart from that I'm having a lot of fun with the game. I'd say it's still worth the price for what you get.

First off, the graphics look good, a huge step from F3 and FNV, but this isn't the technical powerhouse of the year. Also there is a lot of frame rate stutters, something regular to Bethesda releases. I have personally not seen a single crash or game breaking bug after 50+ hours. The games aesthetic is fairly weak, the Commonwealth is on a Skyrim level of boring. For such a massive game full of content, the world is very lifeless outside of the center region with almost every area feeling incredibly copy pasted from the last. Overall the repetitive nature of the map makes the commonwealth weak compared to the Capital waste or even the Mojave waste, this is from someone who put 100's of hours into those two games, 50+ leading up to F4 launch for comparison. But where the game does shine is in the quest lines. The main quest starts out fairly slow but takes a turn for more interesting matters later on. But even greater are the side quests. Many are easily some of the best in the series and make searching copy pasted areas full of Diablo tier random **** loot drops you'll never use actually worth the time. The new features, well they work for what they are but you mostly have to work around them. Crafting is incredibly limited but is put behind huge walls of grinding to make up for how shallow it actually is, and settlement building is only for those who are willing to spend 100's of hours strictly crafting. Most of the time I found myself having to work around the games limitations only to get bored and give up on creating settlements. Overall the game is very good, I can see myself possibly doubling my playtime, especially with promises of extra content in the coming months, but with all the hype surrounding I am still a bit disappointed by the games short comings. This is not a big leap for the Fallout series, its more of the same with unnecessary baggage tacked on. Expand

The world is filled with bethesdas trademark 'get lost in sidequests' amount of activities, and while the rpg elements have been toned down a bit more from previous iterations it should still provide plenty of entertainment for anyone that liked fallout 3. Be aware that it is not a carbon copy of the older games in the seriues and has made changes, a lot of them for the better, but some for the worse, the removal of the skill system will no doubt step on some toes as is evident in the flood of salty reviewers.
Visually the game is good, dont expect The Witcher 3 levels of pure beauty but it is still a good looking game. It has some bugs but not nearly the amount of them the previous two entries in the series had to wrestle with at launch .

-Game is great. Not a masterpiece but far from a disgrace as so many are hellbent on saying.

    - If this game isn't an RPG to you, then you're probably lazy. Explore, search everything, talk to everyone That's the essence of an RPG and its all in this game. Oh and as an added bonus you can build your own friggin towns and ADD TO THE WORLD.

    - Dialog is a bit hackjob, I won't argue. But I don't see a huge difference between this game and past titles

    - Maybe it's me but this game is in no way an FPS, its far more tactical.

    - New skill system is a welcome change. Does anyone else realize how stupid it was in past games to have, for example, 1 Charisma but 100 Speech & Barter. All the old skills are still here under new names and as perks or built into the stat to begin with.

    - Dissapointed that survival difficulty no longer requires you to stay fed, hydrated and well rested.

    - Finally, If this game came out under another name under the umbrella of different developer & publisher I can promise you the user score would be very different. Implementation of new ideas and/or the game not being what YOU expected does not make it bad. It makes it new, and it's unfortunate so many people who can't handle that have bombarded the ratings with scores it does not deserve. The lowest this game should receive is a 5, and that's if you're being meticulously critical.

Incidentally, Metacritic should really lock user review access until 24-48 hours after the release.

I still take a few moments to stop and watch when a rad storm moves in. While out exploring the land, you will come across an immense amount of lootable items. Luckily this time around, Bethesda has made every single one of these items useful. No more picking and choosing as was a huge headache in Elder Scrolls. Building your settlements is hugely addictive. The build menus are a bit clunky and take time to get used to. Also the restrictive camera can make placement of certain structure elements a frustrating lesson in trial and error. The story so far has also been a lackluster attempt and the opening sequence felt almost tacked on. Of course it wouldn't be a Bethesda game without the presence of some periodic glitches although nothing game breaking yet. Pacing is also sometimes curious. If you are a player that prefers to focus primarily on story missions, then you are going to have a difficult time. Huge difficulty spikes in story missions and even en route to a story location will force you to retreat and improve weapons, armor, and supplies before making another attempt. All in all, this is a solid game with a learning curve. Definitely a recommend for any open world gamer. Expand

For example, to be able to kill every character, even if this effectively ends the main questline, the option still needs to be there. Also needs the option of hardcore mode (which surely would not be too hard to put in given the attention to detail in other areas), also other simple options like your dog being able to die (again surely not hard to implement). I'm nowhere near the end yet but if there are no different settlement endings I will be disappointed by this, though I understand what Bethesda are trying to do by having the game run on past the main ending, but again there needs to be an option. I also miss traits, they were valuable to roleplaying. And I don't mind the new perk system, but how hard would it have been to put some SPECIAL stat related options into the dialogue as well, those were some of the best parts about new Vegas.

Despite these gripes, I do love the game, and I have played all the other fallouts as they were released barring the first. If this were just a little more like new Vegas it could be a 9 or 10, particularly with the new features. I just hope Bethesda listens to their fans and adds in the options for these small changes, it would go a long way towards mollifying long term fans of the series. I truly believe Bethesda is passionate about the fallout universe and I hope to see more from them, but please Bethesda, if anyone from your offices is reading this, please just listen to your fans and keep up the (almost) excellent work.

Right off the bat, It’s important to know that Fallout 4 is, for all intensive purposes, the same
game as Fallout 3, set in a larger area with improved graphics, AI, skill tree progressions and
storylines. It’s exactly what fans wanted, which is more of the same, but better. If you’ve
    played past games in the series, you will immediately feel at home, and Bethesda know this;
utilising the slogan ‘Welcome Home’ in their marketing campaigns was completely
deliberate. It’s the same gritty universe you’ve grown to love; Bethesda have invited you
to fall in love with it again.

This edition of the franchise brings the player to a postapocalyptic version of Boston. From
the moment you exit Vault 111 to greet the outside world, you are met with the sight of the
world that will become your sandbox for as long as you will it to be. Immediately, the
    improvements on previous installments are noticeable with regards to the environment;
husks of trees cut rays of sunlight in a realistic manner, clouds part to make the starry night
sky clear, fog encompasses you and rain blocks your field of view. This mere addition
already adds much more depth to the player experience, making it that much harder to let go
    of the gamepad.

One of the more anticipated refinements to the game is its crafting system. Previous
installments have had fairly basic methods of crafting incorporated into general gameplay,
but for Fallout 4 it has been given a complete overhaul. Literally every item lying about is a
tool you can use, whether it’s to be used for modding weapons and armour or repairs. Gone
are the days of hoarding around useless items. See a car? Scrap it for iron. See a Table?
Scrap it for wood. All of these are used when it comes to the apex of Fallout 4’s crafting
system; the ability to build your own settlement. This feature is a completely new addition,
but acts as more of a mini game rather than anything conducive to the plot. Regardless, you
may very well find yourself spending hours upon hours constructing and defending your own
settlement, especially if you’re looking for something substantial to keep you occupied once
the main quest has been completed.

In terms of actual gameplay, the player is treated to a familiar first or third person (which you
can switch between on the fly) combat system that has been overhauled. Shooting feels
great; the character animations mimic reallife reactions, and the animations added to each
weapon only amplify the satisfaction gained by pulling a trigger. V.A.T.S, the target selection
tool that froze time in previous installments, returns in a modified form; rather than
completely freezing time, it only slows it down, which adds a level of urgency and intensity to
the process, given the enemy you’re fighting is still charging towards you. The mix of
strategy and utility that this new V.A.T.S encourages is a a unique selling point of the
franchise, and is far more satisfying option than shooting in real time, which the player also
has the option of doing. Outside of combat, the player is treated to one of the best dialogue
systems within games in recent years. Gone are the days of overused voice actors; Fallout 4
is host to a multitude of different voices, one of which actually belongs to your character for
the first time ever within a Bethesda RPG. The only downside to the gameplay is that, as
with any other Bethesda game, there are bugs and glitches that will often surface while
playing. This is especially noticeable when it comes to companions, who are still more useful
as walking suitcases for extra equipment than allies in battle. Hopefully these will be ironed
out with a patch in the future, but past entries in the series indicate otherwise.

It is pleasing to notice that Bethesda have made clear improvements in their storyline
    crafting. Fallout 3 was known for it’s head first approach with regards to it’s main storyline;
from the getgo you were on a quest to discover the whereabouts of your father, with the
game pushing you in the direction of the main quest and leaving you to your own devices with regards to side quests. Without spoiling anything, Fallout 4 does the opposite; the main quest teases you, painfully so, taking a good two hours before feeding you any substantial information with regards to the main plot. Also, the side quests don’t feel like side quests in the traditional sense; they all feel as if they have links to the main plot, and somewhat influence it depending on their outcome. The story slowly encapsulates you to the point where you’ve entered a liminal state, losing track of time and becoming a thrall to the story. A caveat here to anyone with an active social life. Fallout 4 is living up to its expectations as an involving RPG. With an abundance of stories to explore and quests to engage with, as well as your own settlements to look after, Bethesda have crafted the quintessential single player experience, spoiled slightly by Bethesda's age old curse: bugs

    Gameplay:
Well from what I have played, it feels fairly solid. I like the VATS System, and the new loot system where I don't have to go into a menu to loot I can just take what I want and leave. The shooting side of things is slightly odd (Well for me anyway). Coming from shooters like Battlefield, Destiny and so on, I will say it does feel a bit out of place but I guess it just takes getting used too. The AI doesn't seem very smart, constantly getting stuck on objects in the world and what not... but I really couldn't care less to be honest. I ran into a graphical bug as soon as I left the house at the beginning of the game where the everything went black but yeah again kinda typical of Bethesda so wasn't surprised there, I just laughed. The building side of things I thought was interesting despite the stupid Key Bindings they used to access it but whatever. The guns feel solid which to me is a good thing. I haven't done too much crafting as of yet but yeah it feels pretty good.

    Performance:
Well yeah... Smooth, Smooth, Lag, Smooth, Lag... Now this really grinds my gears as I know that they are capable of getting the game to run solid but are most probably too lazy to really dig deep and make it work. There are so many other open world games that have far greater details yet run better. No excuses for this one.

    Overall:
I enjoyed what time I have put into the game and look forward to continuing my adventure in the Wasteland. I would (Despite the obvious flaws) Recommend this game.

The game completely meets my expectations and is not deficient compared to FO3 and FO:NV. I played both to death and considered New Vegas to be a major improvement over FO3. FO4 would need to blow me away with next gen graphics to earn a 10, but I understand the designers are limited to the disc capacity and performance specs of the current console generation. I didn't expect the bleeding edge of graphics tech with perfect performance in a massive open world game. I don't know why anyone would, besides kids who don't understand those limitations. I'm tempted to give this a 10 just to offset the irrational metabombing.

FO4 takes several strides forward in streamlining quality of life for the player: looting bodies and most containers without freezing the game to "open" the object; basing character development on SPECIAL and perk system and removing skills; making VATS more action oriented and increasing the relevance of aim-down-the-sight in real time combat. These are all positive developments.

The faster loot system is fantastic, because players of past Bethesda games know you spend more time looting and sorting through loot than you do swinging/firing your weapon. All that looting pays off better than the game's predecessors due to the crafting, modding, and settlement developing mechanics.

SPECIAL, and therefore initial character creation, is more relevant now. In FO3, you could start with 1 INT, but dump skill points into science and hacking and be masters of it. What sense does that make? Even stupider, skill points per level were based on intelligence, so the best way to max out skills was to start with a very high INT...even if you're a brutish, bat swinging, grenade throwing monster with no points in any INT-based skill. What sense does that make? The majority of players will be limited by a diverse SPECIAL arrangement and corresponding perks. However, Bethesda removed the level cap, so the ultra-hardcore completionists can still trick out god-like characters, provided they put in the effort. Seems like a great compromise that both enhances the average gamer's experience while leaving open avenues for the always sensitive power gamers.

Also, making combat more action oriented does not reduce an RPG to "just a shooter" any more than adding a gun unlocking system categorically turns a shooter into an RPG. It just makes it a little more interesting. With a deep weapon and armor crafting system and the perk system, players of any skill level should be able to tackle the combat in the game.

People are crying a lot over the dialogue system. Get a grip. The game is fully voice acted for the first time, meaning the player character's dialogue is voice acted. In a massive open-world game. That is a remarkable leap forward, but it has limitations. You can't have as much dialogue as you had before when the player character didn't speak.

Overall a fantastic game. No game is perfect, but this one lives up to the hype.

Guys from Bethesda did overall a good game by adding batter graphics, weapon physics they thought: " Why the game must be overall new, were instead you can make a very BIG UPDATE to the old BUT already perfect Fallout 3."

I think the right way to enjoy Fallout 4. As the modern Fallout 3.

P.S Only one issue I had that some times the FPS drops to 15. But only in moments when a lot action is happening on screen.

I am fairly enjoying this game the 10-15 hours I have spend on it, minor issues that can be avoided if you use quick save regularly.

What bothers me the most is the lack of understanding the game gives when you are building stuff with your ps4 controller. The view you get when building stuff is terrible, its very hard to place the walls, stairs, fences etc like you want to place them. I

I think they should have build some kind of building mode to make this less annoying or allow you to zoom more out with more rotation possibilities of objects. The other thing that I think they didn't think about is structural engineering, it´s not complicated that floors and roof need structural stability so I ended up building something that does not apply to the law of physics. Pretty unrealistic and boring something that could have been pretty cool and fun.

    Just my fifty cents.

Graphics are improved and appealing, but admittedly not optimal on console. Immediate you will see that the game developers have changed the "faction" system as in the previous game to something similar to Fallout 3. Overall I'd say that there is still much work to be done by developers on this game in terms of bugs and few tweaks with the autosave system. Overall I'd say that there is still much work to be done by developers on this game in terms of bugs and few tweaks with the autosave system. RPG mechanics have been changed but not outrageously. Perks still exist and the developers have increased the level cap in order to compensate for the lack of SPECIAL points. Speech options are understandably limited due to the Mass Effect-esque conversation wheel, but voice acting is well done despite the lip syncing issues. The biggest thing I've seen is Bethesda's clear focus on the modding community of the previous two games. A lot of the crafting, settlements, weather, and color pallet mods were quite popular and Bethesda took notice. I've been having a lot of fun with the game and expect to continue playing for the next few months. To those reviewers that are stating problems that were present in the last two games as if they are new, or state that NV is the standard you're rating this game on then I wold strongly suggest playing the games side by side and reconsidering your opinion. First review written i just have to say that this game is solid. Yes Bethesda has seen fit to remove some rpg oriented features shown in previous titles such as skill points (which i do sorely miss) to focus on a more stream lined game that appeals to a wider audience, but in doing so leaves you with an action heavy shooter rpg hybrid were the story and dialogue sort of puts the player in a position were you ask yourself "Do I actually care about these people or their lives?" and for the most part you don't. Yes this will seem a bit off putting but most of these features can be overlooked for the experience as a whole like the pointless morality system (more of a morality score card really) has been gutted and isn't missed at all.

This entry stands as another new step for the series as it introduces the ability to create many different customization towns for the player to create, including your own towns people you call from the waste land to in habit your make shift town that can also be customized with weapons and armor. This game actually rewards the player for their over scavenging which is a staple in most Bethesda games (Check every dresser and basket for hopes of some hidden gem) by letting you break down the trash you find riddled through out the wasteland into resources to upgrade your towns.

The customization even goes into the newly changed power armor mechanic. This time around power armor is less equip and forget item and now gives the player the feeling of controlling a hulking mass of post future war nuclear dystopian iron man suite that the player can now fully customize with different components (such as helmets and cages) found in the environment.

Besides the hurt you might get from losing some rpg heavy elements if you've never played the series then you wont care, but as a fan of the series I can say this entire is a well made title sacrificing graphics and hardcore rpg elements for just plain old fun. Yeah some may say that this isn't as hardcore as they hoped or that it was over hyped (hype by the way is **** anyway that any one with a product will ride to sell units) but first and for most it is fun and that should be all that matters.

This game has a lot of hours you can put into this game. Only done like 15 or 20 quest and 40 hours in. What a blast Expand

So... I had to sign up for this site and leave a review. Like many I wait to read the reviews before I buy a game as in this day and age sometimes game companies loose touch with reality and in the ever onslaught of copy and paste - rebrand with a new game name and sell for 60 bucks. Like many I read the review's and it was neck and neck.. so games like this are hard to pull the triggerSo... I had to sign up for this site and leave a review. Like many I wait to read the reviews before I buy a game as in this day and age sometimes game companies loose touch with reality and in the ever onslaught of copy and paste - rebrand with a new game name and sell for 60 bucks. Like many I read the review's and it was neck and neck.. so games like this are hard to pull the trigger on.. The one word I kept seeing a lot was SKYRIM so... to me that could never be a bad thing. So I bought the game and well its SKYRIM love it or hate it...

    First few days :
At first I wasn't impressed.. the graphics don't bother me they are good enough.. the bugs don't bother me which I have not seen many.. they are funny when they do happen much like Skyrim. The voice acting is blah... the biggest gripe is the storyline is subpar to say the least.. so far .. I'm LVL 9 so maybe it will get better. However right out the gate... really... your telling me 80 people at the game studio could not come up with a better story line... what did you guys have a brown bag , draw it up on the whiteboard in 10 min... Bethesda would have been better off to bring in some 6 year olds and have them do the storyline... ATLEAST IT WOULD HAVE BEEN ORGINAL... (not joking) I get it , the concept of Fallout is post war but I can write on paper already 10 great concepts with that.. instead of the preferably opening scene of the game... but whatevs.... just the content alone and everything else offsets it. My last disappointment was how easy it was... I'm flying through the game with no real challenge... WHY DO I NEED A SUIT OF ARMOR when I'm already kicking azzzz.. One last pet peeve... the game is G rated / PG rated at times then other times R / rated... can we get some consistency here... Its a game for adults obviously..

    After a few days:
I'M FREAKING LOVING THIS GAME... I must have overlooked it but there is a difficulty setting.. I bumped it up to survivability and now everything is so worth it.. Now I barley leave home with out my armor suit :) This is a tad harder setting then Legendary setting on Skyrim .. cause we all know after you get your gear made even legendary wasn't to hard. NOW all those perks people are complaining about are vital... every bullet... every tin can you pick up... it all counts. Right now I'm lvl 13 . Very early stages but I'm enjoying the game for what it is and not rushing through it...

I bought this for PS4 to play through the first time... Once the mods start rolling out on PC I will pick up another copy ...

Just a honest opinion from my prospective... hopefully this will help someone. If you loved Skyrim then this game was made for you... get it you wont be disappointed in that aspect. It really is a good game and after getting into it I'm glad I didn't waste my money.

I'm enjoying the game. I just want to know why such old computers were used in the year 2077. If these computers were used simply to add something familiar for Fallout fans, it was a bad rhetorical choice. I had a green screen CRT computer in 1992. I don't expect holograms, but the computers should at least be similar to what we have now, i.e. flat screens and fast performance. The oldI'm enjoying the game. The old computers in this futuristic wasteland clunk along slower than my 1992 PC (R.I.P.). Both the computer and Pipboy screens should have been colorized, in my humble opinion. Having more fluid movement in 3rd-person view would have been nice too. The game is still a lot of fun and I keep wanting to get back to the story to discover what will happen next. The graphics are a mix between last gen and current gen. Inventory seems a bit convoluted and makes it difficult to find things. These words are more of a rambling tangent than a review, but that was my intention. Food for thought. Expand

After putting in about 50 hours already, I think I'm in a decent position to post a review...

This is a very good game, but it is not an excellent game. Given how much I enjoyed Fallout 3 and New Vegas I was seriously expecting to give this 10/10 but I can't. I can't because many of the changes that this game implemented have taken something away from that quintessential Fallout feel.

    This is a very good game, but it is not an excellent game. Given how much I enjoyed Fallout 3 and New Vegas I was seriously expecting to give this 10/10 but I can't. I can't because many of the changes that this game implemented have taken something away from that quintessential Fallout feel. Let's start with the negatives;

    1) The voiced character is a bad move. It forces a voice on your character that you don't necessarily want. Why would a charisma 10 and charisma 1 character speak in the same way? By forcing a voice on you, it robs you of the chance to imagine something up for yourself. Similarly, the dialogue wheel is a step backwards - what's wrong with wanting to know exactly what my character is going to say!?
    2) The lack of level cap means this game has next to no replay value for me. I can make this one character into a God, there will eventually be nothing he can't do - so where's the motivation to roll a new character with a different focus?
    3) Bugs. Always the bugs.
    4) I don't really like FPS games that much so I was disappointed that the game seemed to demand a fairly high level of skill in such things at some points. Or maybe I just suck or am a wimp - I don't want to kill you!

    Okay, now the good points;
    1) The companions are really interesting characters that I actually care about. I really feel something for Nick in particular. Seeing him evolve over time was super rewarding and I love how the game encourages you to explore all these different stories.
    2) It's still super massive with so much to do. The crafting and settlement building adds to this beautifully.
    3) I've seen a few people upset with the main story, but I thought it was well done. It took me a long time to decide who to side with because none of the factions 'have it all' as it were - it really makes you think about where you are willing to compromise (on a moral level more than anything) and I had the impression that my choice would significantly affect the world.
    4) The music is the best yet. Inon Zur has really outdone himself.

Overall, I can see myself putting in many more hours yet for the pure story and interest in exploring the world after the bombs fell. Because after all, war, war never changes.

Feral Ghoul ugly in many ways, but beneath its iffy exterior beats the heart of one helluva great RPG. Get past the graphics deficiency, and the sheer thrill of Fallout 4’s combat, crafting options, and exploring will hold your attention for months. [January 2015, p64]

Fallout 4 leans to the Shooting side of things. It strips down the gameplay from the actual RPG elements and offers a meta-nuclaer shooting gallery which of course keep its charm and gameplay wealth but also feels a little too friendly for the new comers. The Base builder mode is unnecessary, boring and irritating. Unfortunately, overall, there are no steps forward for this Nuclear Holocaust Behemoth of the video games industry. Only steps sideways.
