Pros: The story doesn't get in the way of the game. The characters are okay and the dialogue is decent. The 'glory kills' are quick and take place in real time -- enemies keep moving and firing at you You can't really just sit back and snipe at enemies like in a lot of modern shooters, mostly because you need to pick up health from dead enemies. The game runs extremely smoothly.

Cons: The weapons all feel pretty much the same and don't feel powerful. The explosions feel very fake. Most of the upgrades to the weapons are trivial and barely help. The upgrades to the suit are boring. The secrets are easy to find, and they don't really give you anything special. The gameplay mostly involves running away from enemies and strafing -- no enemies can catch up to you. The graphics are mediocre at best. There are no physics. The environments feel the same.

I wish I really liked this game like other seem to, but I don't. The gameplay design - that forces players to move -- has a lot of potential to resurrect the dead genre of FPS, but this game doesn't quite pull it off. I still haven't played FPS i like since Half life 2 and bioshock.

DOOM has a slight struggle to find it's own identity. The story delivers exactly what you would expect from an arcade experience. On the other side, DOOM lacks a lot of well beloved features from it's predecessors and has some quickly appearing wear marks of it's own. However, the technical aspect performs well on PC and Consoles and the Multiplayer is fun, but requires some balancing updates.

OLD SCHOOL, is the perfect way to describe this new entry in the Doom franchise. All in all, the new Doom is a good game, but with some faults.

See, not everything old school should be something we long for. Some of the design choices for the campaign are primitive at best. Mainly, the need to kill every single enemy in a room in order to go to the next. And despite all the adrenaline you get from killing demons, eventually you ask yourself: is there anything else to this game? The answer is no. Killing demons is fun, but the game eventually throws so many of them at you that you will begin to feel fatigue.

Diversity is a good thing, and an essential part of having a modern day video game. Multiple mechanics working in conjunction to provide an experience only modern games allow. Having a dozen of well made weapons is not having multiple mechanics. In fact, Doom has only one mechanic: "shoot and kill".

The multiplayer feels like a modern remake of Quake (pick one, they are all essentially the same). Which is not a bad thing, but it honestly lacks the necessary depth to keep you invested in the long term. Again, is fun but not a substantial addition to your free time.

Finally, the Doom modding system is great. If you have the patience and ability to dedicate enough time to create content. Yet, is too early to tell if anything truly mesmerizing can come out of it. I am sure that if great user content begins to appear, then this feature is the most essential one to Doom.

In conclusion, Doom is a good game for 60 bucks. Is a GREAT game for 40, and a fantastic one for less than 30 bucks. So it's really up to you if you are willing to wait it out for the cheaper prices.

I sorta feel like I should weigh how much I paid for a game into the review score. Some people might view this as unfair, but some people like pineapple on pizza. I can't be bothered with either.

So, yeah, gave this a 7, but let's be clear: this game is fun. This is a good time. And had I found it for $20-$30 on Half.com or in Gamestop, I'd give it a high 8 or a 9. But, I paid full

So, yeah, gave this a 7, but let's be clear: this game is fun. This is a good time. And had I found it for $20-$30 on Half.com or in Gamestop, I'd give it a high 8 or a 9. But, I paid full price and it was a short (but wild) ride.

    Like your mom. HEH, RIGHT?

    Ok. Anyway.

What I loved: BLAM BLAM BLAM BLAM BLAM. Satisfying combat. Simplistic upgrade system. Interesting sprinklings of codecs to feed you hints about the background and story. The 'your balls-outyness will be rewarded, my child' pace. Seeing all my favorite demons from my 20s in all of their nexgen upgraded glory. The BFG.

What I didn't: In staying true to it's Doominess, it's repetitive and shallow. Sometimes it's a grind. But that's Doom, kids. You play Doom because it's Doom. You don't listen to Justin Timberlake hoping for deep-assed Tom Waits-style insights and lyrics, you listen because it's familiar and you know what to expect and it makes you feel good even if you're a little mad because no human being should have a life that good. Seriously, eff Justin Timberlake. But that's Doom, man. It's not The Last Of Us. It's not Silent Hill 2. Hell, when it comes to story, it ain't even L.A. Noire.

    Man, THAT hurt to type.

But it's a good time. It's just not "worth the full price of admission" good time.

And a passing mention of the multiplayer: Eh. It's aight. Played 9-10 matches, had a reasonably decent time, didn't feel the urge to go back. Think of a fast-paced-but-sloppy Halo 4.

So if you can borrow it or get it cheap, seriously, go for it. Oh unless you get queasy easily, like this one friend of mine. Like, if you can't manage the gore in an average episode of Walking Dead, maybe stay away. You poor bastard.

Bethesda and ID’s visceral collaboration, Doom throws players into a fast-paced, metal-fueled first-person shooter. With monsters and mayhem in abundance, does Doom offer anything new to the over saturated FPS market, or are fans left with another generic shooter?

    The Good
The fast paced action of Doom sets it apart from other games in the FPS genre. There is no time to take cover, and if you don’t move, you are guaranteed to die while enemies are around. There is a feeling of urgency and an element of unpredictability with the enemies that is absent from most games of the genre. The game encourages players to utilize its “gore kill” system by having enemies drop health pick-ups from being killed in this manner; this was a feature that could have felt tacked-on, but ultimately becomes a core combat element that can be necessary for those running low on health. The brutality of the weapons and the creativity behind their upgrade/attachments provide players with a level of strategy to handle demonic encounters; players must act quickly when fighting demons as the weapon wheel only slows the action, but does not stop it. Players are challenged with adjusting to any demonic encounter on the fly and this level of non-stop action makes for an enjoyable experience.
The snapmap game mode deserves high praise not only for its entertainment value, but also its practical applications in teaching coding. Snapmap allows players to create their own playable maps and upload them for others to play themselves. The remarkable aspect behind this game mode is the detail, size, and environmental reactions a player can create within their own map; the level of detail and control that players can put into their own creation makes this game mode a how-to for coding. Were it not for the games Mature rating (17+), Doom would be a highly recommended teaching tool for those students interested in coding.

    The Bad
While there is a story present within Doom’s campaign mode, it’s less than compelling; portal to hell has been opened, close it. While the story unfolds through collectable dossiers and natural progression, there is little depth or surprises here. It’s not terrible, but it’s not great either. The online multiplayer is more of the same, in that there is little difference between it and every other multiplayer FPS mode on the market. You won’t see anything here that you haven’t seen before.
The major offender in Doom is repetition; there isn’t much more to this game other than move from one area to the next to clear out enemies. While players are encouraged to explore the surprisingly large maps, the repetitive nature of clearing out hives of demons begins to take its toll, and eventually the gameplay becomes stagnant. The level and creature designs are extremely detailed, but the gameplay never really evolves, despite having more difficult enemies thrown at you as the story progresses. Doom plays all of its cards in the first half; everything from that point on is more of the same.

    Rating
7.5 – Doom brings freshness to the FPS genre that has been absent for far too long. The old-style health and armor pick-ups create a difficulty many gamers either forgot existed, or had never experienced. Fans of the series will rejoice with the fast-paced blood-bath that is Doom. While the core game becomes repetitive, the inclusion of the snapmap is an innovative game mode that is ripe with potential, and the multiplayer mode at the very least serves its purpose, despite not bringing anything new to the table. Overall, Doom is a non-stop ride through hell and back, and many gamers will be pleased by the series return to form.

DOOM is a reboot of the series, with less survival horror elements and more of a focus on the original games. With this change of pace from Doom 3, there is typical action-focused gameplay. Regarding this, it's a very predictable story.

This aspect is the most frustrating of the game, because it is painfully obvious there is wasted potential. For most players, it's not a problem because they simply want to kill more enemies with more guns. And that's most enjoyable about DOOM, it's what will keep players coming back and enjoying the game and will most likely lead to a sequel.

The multiplayer is the worst part about DOOM. I would have preferred the developers forego multiplayer to focus more on a more diverse campaign. Snapmap is a welcome addition, because the community is fantastic with their originality. Snapmap is a lot more enjoyable than the multiplayer.

Doom. I got to say I have to be careful in my judgement, coming from nostalgia. Doom 2016 is all about the campaign, which is excellent, and in this day and age written in a sense that you'll be able to grasp and get involved in. It never obstructs the action, and this is the single most important aspect of any shooter, and for Doom this is the key to success. Because the action in Doom 2016 will take you by surprise. In its best moments, it's absolutely and literally heart-pounding. So coming back to nostalgia again, this is Doom as it was, but on serious amounts of steroids and adrenaline. Doom is hard on the weak, and pleasure for the hard.
The downside though, is in Doom:s multiplayer PvP which feels dated to say the least. Naturally, I'm a product of evolution who prefer the 'hide and recover' mechanic of modern shooters, and Doom doesn't have that. You'll need to brush off your old strafing-skills from the nineties again. Because this is Doom. And it doesn't care what you think. I'm gonna end it like that, really, "This is Doom". Because it sure as hell is.

Dooms remaster is a prime example of how a FPS in 2016/17 should be. Fantastic graphics and a smooth 60FPS, makes for a satisfying experience.

Dooms multiplayer is great, modern... but repetitive. It limits itself in that the maps all feel the same, and there isn't that much variation in game modes, and therefore the experience was the same every time. Most of the time in fact it just felt like the campaign but with other players shooting at you as well. Speaking of repetition after a while of gaining equipment and (baring in mind I was playing the hardest difficulty) and killing the same demons in waves to clear areas over and over it does repeat itself slightly, and at times just felt boring.

With all this being said I found the story of it alright, however for a FPS for this it isn't really that important as it's definitely more focused on acing the shooter aspect of it. It launches you right in with one objective: shoot and kill. Moreover I feel the boss fights of this game were fantastic, grueling and bloody all throughout with interesting mechanics, hard amounts of health and brilliant design they were always new and a joy to play through.

Overall DOOM was a fun game to play, I wouldn't however go back to it as there are other less repetitive experiences to be had in other games like this, however this does not take away from what an experience doom was. It's reasonably lengthy 12 hour campaign and entertaining multiplayer probably more fit for some than others, you get well worth the price of a now £15 game or lower. A fantastic example of how a FPS should play, nostalgia trip and memorable experience.

Dooms gunplay is fantastic and so is it's music. But it ends up feeling very samey since most places look very similar with the same color pallet and its lack of boss fights until the very end. You basically just go into room after room shooting monsters the entire time. Thankfully the gunplay is so good it makes up for i somewhat. Thankfully Doom Eternal fixes these issues.

And then besides that you just go from boring open space to boring open space blasting the same demons that just constantly do the same **** there’s no set prices by the way or cut scenes, just demon set ups. I thought this would be better if they were more closed spaces like at the beginning. The best thing about the game was the boss fights, to which there’s only 3 and the last one I thought was boring compared to the cyber demon and the 2nd one which were pretty good and the funnest parts of the game by far. The visuals are nice but there just isn’t much variety to them, everything about the game is just so repetitive. So as for rebooting an old legendary franchise I suppose it’s a very good thing but it’s just that really, mostly just a big dumb run, jump and gun blow up demons romp. As for the multiplayer I’ve only played 2 matches which was just today and it was very slow and lackluster, especially the mode “warpath” (I think it’s called) but I was only playing on the beginner section, I didn’t get to play a demon also, but all of the new guns and equipment and playable demons you can eventually use look exciting, but besides this I’m sure I’ve heard very good things about the multiplayer. And besides all that I don’t know anything about snapmap and that’s all really. Expand

The fighting arenas are well designed and a joy to bounce around on. The music will probably go down in history as one of the best pieces of music ever created in a videogame. The best aspect of Doom is the feeling of a badass, the feeling of being a Demon slayer, and the music compliments this feeling well. The story is really nothing special, dialogue is fine, platforming sections are sometimes very annoying, and some boss fights just feel like big weapon sponges that do the same thing over and over and over.

Although in comparison to Doom Eternal.. it’s definitely been outshone as of now. Just in the moment to moment gameplay I think Eternal is a far better game (minus the platforming) although I liked the mysterious atmosphere of Doom 16 more. Oh, and Mick Gordon. Nuff said. Expand

The gunplay, the enemies and the scenarios are great. Is really enjoyable to annihilate demons and make armor and weapons improvements. BUT this is only the 20-40% of the game. Most of time the game makes you go walking to get collectibles and to get yellow, red or blue cards to advance in the story. 20-40% of the game is great and 60-80% of the game is a walking simulator in hell.

With all these reviews about the "frenetic gameplay", I'm wondering if they played the same game as I. There are *periods* of frenetic firefights, bursts of rapid run-and-gun killing, but then there's also long stretches of boring hallway walking with only a handful of enemies around. Exploration is a snoozefest and, outside of the BFG, most of the weapons are simply unremarkable. You WILL get tired of Glory Kills before you're done with the first chapter and yet, when playing on Ultra-Violent, constantly performing them is a necessity (for health and the like), thus devolving into a constant shoot-stun-glory kill routine over and over for the duration of the game. The campaign is painfully short; with finding about 70% of the collectibles, beating the game took only 10 hours, and far too much of that was spent looking at loading screens. Campaign is also lacking in spirit - looking back I can't really identify as single "holy s**t, did you see that?!" moments. Graphically the game is neither good nor bad. It, too, is average. I guess the best compliment I can give it is that it runs smooth most of the time with only the very rare frame drop during hectic sequences.

With little reason to replay the campaign, I turned to multiplayer. What I found there is a tacked on mess of a game that won't appeal to many over the long term. There's nothing in multiplayer to distinguish Doom from the myriad of other sci-fi shooters in the genre. It will likely keep some players for a week or so but they'll go back to their FPS's of choice very soon.

The shining gem of this reboot is Snapmap - the gory version of Super Mario Maker for Doomheads, if you will. This is what will ultimately give Doom any sort of longevity but the problem is waiting for a decent variety and amount of levels to become available through the community. Right now, being new, Snapmap is only good for those people who want to dabble around with level design.

The game is a solid rental but not worth the $60 price of ownership UNLESS you're hardcore into building levels through Snapmap. The best (and worst) of the campaign can be seen through a two day Redbox rental and multiplayer is best left to other games. I'd recommend waiting to buy it until it's cheaper and the community has had time to learn the Snapmap functions and create a decent amount of user based levels.

Enemies can also hit you mid air and cancel your jump, making you fall to your death to start the whole battle over again.

There is alot of platforming and platforming death in this game.

The pace is further ruined by the most annoying part of old Doom that they leaned into heavily, stopping you over and over to find a keycard. Where you having fun? Sorry, you have to find the Blue Keycard. Why this was put in the game is beyond me.

But man would you be wrong! Because Doom 2016 is more about platforming, corridor-running (without an enemy in sight) and what every game 2016 on needs, collectibles!!! These collectibles are not what you think they are, most are absolutely necessary on higher difficulties because rather than an XP-system to get upgrades, the upgrades for armor and weapons come through these collectibles. As for the platforming, at most points it feels like you’re playing Mario or Mirror’s Edge as you will spend more time platforming than actually shooting; of which the shooting takes place in arena-like areas in levels, where 99% of the shooting takes places in your first-person ‘shooter’. As others have said, if I wanted platforming, I’d go play Mario.

As for the weapons, which are your most used assets in an FPS, by mid-game the weapons start meshing together as you just start switching weapons based on which gun has ammo. Even the weapon mods don’t add much to weapon variety. During the shooting sections, most of the time you’re actually meleeing because the glory kills system you get from staggering enemies are required to get health drops to survive in combat so there is no real strategy besides charge, melee, charge, melee. Get ready to use that shotgun. There is no strategy to be found in Doom 2016. Also, the chainsaw has been turned into a Borderlands-esque ammo making machine, which requires fuel to operate and when used on higher ranking enemies, they will drop ammo like candy from a piñata at a party.

Story-wise for all the hype that was put behind this story for redefining story in the single-player genre and how deep it was, the story is very much a throwaway that hardly exists in the background. The majority comes through codex pick-ups that you have to find and read and are not conveyed through characters or events. The main bad character has NO reasoning or explanation for why they did what they did throughout the campaign. The storyline is mainly stolen from Doom 3 and extremely watered down with no character development, no reason for these events or why the demons are invading. As for the times you go to Hell are ridiculous in comparison to the previous titles, it’s like you’re a welcome guest in the demons’ home, even though you’re supposed to be the most feared demon killer in history.

Once you hit the halfway point the game turns into a slog as you just want the game to end. The boss battles, while they vary in gameplay and are sort of interesting in relation to everything else, they are quite boring when you look back after the fight is done as even the Cyber Demon (one of the main bosses in Doom original) is a pretty easy fight. You don’t feel like you went into a fight against a huge demon, more like you got into a tussle with a kitten. The end game is the worst part of all this as the whole game ‘wraps up’ without you even getting any answers or even having satisfying gameplay as the last boss battle is the easiest boss battle in the game, where the Hell Guardians and Cyber Demon at least had some sort of challenge. I guess it’s not surprising in a game where they turned Hell Knights, which were essentially mini-bosses in Doom 1, 2, and 3, are now killed in the hundreds with very little effort.

This game is a rental if you want to try it, the campaign lasts maybe a max 10-12 hours, depending on difficulty, where most is you wandering the corridors for collectibles. For actual game and shooting, it’s about 4 hours. You won’t want to pick this game up ever again for the campaign, maybe only the arcade-mode. Play the original three Dooms if you want to have fun.

It works like this: after you attack an enemy to the point of them having little health left, they are highlighted and this gives you the chance to run up and tear them apart mostly with your bare hands, leaving them a bloody mess, and spawning health/other pickups while doing so.

Sounds cool, right? I thought so too...at first.

Then I realized that since the game is mostly stingy with health pickups, you're forced to keep performing these sort of finishing moves whenever possible to stay alive, especially in later levels. It's a gimmick that completely breaks up the flow of the game. You end up shooting enemies a couple times then you rip them apart like cardboard, rinse and repeat. It totally undermines the intimidation factor of the enemies.

Imagine how fun the original Doom would have been if you had had the powers of the berserk powerup 100% of the time AND had to use it constantly. It would have sucked. The player SHOULD feel nearly helpless when left with nothing but their fists to fight hordes of demons--it's a great incentive to be prudent with ammo consumption. But in this game if you have low ammo, it's like "so what, i'll just shoot them a couple times each and tear into them faster than Oprah into a box of jelly donuts"

Also regardless of all the hype about this being an "old school FPS" (mostly referring to the health system actually based on health replenishment rather than CoD-style 'wait in a corner to heal' tactics) there ARE dialog screens you have to wait through, and they try to make "the story" be a part of the game too.

...uhm, this game IS called Doom, right?

The video game equivalent of a modern reboot/remake movie that captures little of the spirit of it's namesake.

I'll start off by saying that I'm not exactly the target audience for this game. While I loved Wolfenstein 3d, Doom, and Quake when I was younger, that was mainly because they were cutting-edge and offered never before seen experiences. These days, I look for good or unique storytelling in games and I find the typical grinds and gameplay loops boring.

I'll start with the gameplay. It's everything you'd expect a modern version of Doom to be. The only minor issues with it is that rockets don't seem to be nearly as fun as they used to be (maybe that's more of a Quake thing), and feedback upon receiving damage is kind of light. It's a great change of pace from the hordes of military shooters we've had for the past 15+ years. Although if you've primarily played military shooters, then Doom will take some getting used to.

Controlling the game via the PS4 controller works well enough, though isn't as good as a keyboard/mouse setup.

I must praise the graphics. Playing this on a standard PS4 is amazing. Everything is fluid and looks great. This is one of the best-looking PS4 games I've played, though I primarily play RPGs. I wish more developers would license id's engine for their PS4 games.

The story is the main reason I got this. Just hearing about Doom Guy and his disrespect for authority got me interested. The first level is amazing and there's some good characterization going on here, but after that, it's toned down a lot. Doom Guy doesn't start angrily breaking stuff again until one level in the middle of the game. And there's many sections throughout where he just stands there and watches. I really would have liked to see him do more. I was especially disappointed when meeting the final boss: he just stood there. Though I suppose his finishing move somewhat made up for it.

The story is light. I remember there being more story and background in Doom 3 (2004). You only interact with three other characters through the whole game, and they're not all that interesting. They really just serve to give you a reason to go from one level to the next. There's a relatively small (compared to other games I play) number of data logs that contain information about the locations, weapons, monsters, and characters. But again, they're not too interesting.

There's a surprising number of extras too, which I don't remember ever being in a previous Doom game. User-created levels, specific secret item/areas, and even original doom levels. This is always nice to see when most games these days repackage their extras as DLC.

So yeah, I had an average time with this game. It was a bit fun to kill hordes of demons, but it got a bit monotonous for me with not a lot pushing me forward, storywise. It's staying in my collection regardless. As an old-school Doom fan, I wouldn't do anything else.

Gameplay wise it adds nothing that wasn't in the original Doom (apart from some annoying platforming mechanics). It even had the old Doom's same beats - see some juicy pickups? Expect to be swarmed soon thereafter. While the glory kills are interesting the first few times, they grow stale before too long. And the story of the campaign? Bland, uninteresting and with not a single character of note.

In short, a technically sound title that is bland, uninspiring and not worth a replay. I guess I'll be trading it tomorrow.

It's so different from original DOOM that at the beginning I felt confused. It's definitely intense, fast and full of action but also quite repetitive. I had fun, but not for long. It's probably more for multiplayer fans

That level made me feel like playing a search and platform game. Jump for this, jump for that, search for this, search for that. Jump, jump and search, search again and again. As I learned from reviews that in some next level I was expected to jump and climb on moving platforms as well, I immediately quit the game.

BORING. Its probably the worst thing you can say about something that's supposed to entertain but its how I feel about the new Doom.

This is a game that has no idea what it wants to be. Is it a first person shooter. "Sort of". Is it a role player Half Life style of game. "Kind of". Its this uncomfortable mix of elements that simply don't work well together that make the game so dull.

Doom is supposed to be fast and furious but this game is slowed down significantly by the need to constantly find things be it entrance ways, key cards, etc. You constantly find you are undertaking paquor style antics al la Remember Me.

Just as annoying is the mods system. It has a horrible counter intuitive interface that demands your time and attention. Its a ghastly thing that again slows down the pace of the game.

Indeed even the weapons have been bastardized. I can not image why a chainsaw should "run out of ammo". A situation made worse by the constant shortages of ammo, similar to the Stalker series of games.

Taken together this is a recipe for pure frustration and ultimately disinterest. I played for 30 minutes and had, had more than had enough.

Yet another title from Bethesda that makes me pine for an updated graphic take on the original games.

This feels like a very “bare-bones” kind of game. I read through many articles about how the developers were attempting to try to make the game purposely feel like the first Doom game, but I really think it’s willful blindness. Why? I feel like they purposely made the game very bare-bones and used the excuse that it’s supposed to play like a game released over twenty years ago. I read through many articles about how the developers were attempting to try to make the game purposely feel like the first Doom game, but I really think it’s willful blindness. Why? I feel like they purposely made the game very bare-bones and used the excuse that it’s supposed to play like a game released over twenty years ago. I feel that the developers could’ve put more effort into it and taken more risks into making a better product.

The campaign mode is atrocious. I know that, for this kind of shooter genre, one can’t start playing this game and expect a series of movie-like cinematics. But, I don’t feel like there was enough story content. I honestly enjoyed reading through the lore from the datalogs present in the game, but they were very few of them present through the entire campaign.

The level designs are atrocious in the campaign and is one of the main reasons of the low score. There are secrets to collect and challenges to complete, which add on to the game length, but otherwise most of the levels are very linear. If the level isn’t linear, usually the player will be given a group of objectives that need to be fulfilled, such as shutting off three air purifiers in a set level. The first few levels are pretty fun, but as you progress it begins to feel old quickly.

I really enjoyed playing through the original Doom when it was first released, but I feel due to the changes in technology, the developers were trying to mimic something that can’t exist in today’s world. I spent probably thousands of hours playing games like Doom, Quake and Half-Life, as well as playing mods that were freely available for the game from aspiring individuals, many of which would later become game developers themselves. Counter-Strike began as a Half-Life mod, and Team Fortress began as a Quake mod. Due to how graphics have increased significantly, game mods with completely new levels are difficult to create. Certain game developers have released kits to help users build mods for their games, but I notice that the creativity isn’t what it was before.

In this title, it just doesn’t feel like there’s much content anymore. All of the levels in the campaign feel like the developers chose pre-set textures and copied them for all of the levels. None of them actually feel unique to me, even though I’m supposed to feel like I’m exploring a completely different planet. It feels like it’s all procedurally-generated content, even though it’s not. It feels like they outsourced the level design to a different company. It’s a real slog to get through.

There just aren’t that many secrets in the game. They’re very easy to find if you don’t go straight for the objectives. The multiplayer is fun at first, but after a while it will also become stale. I tried to read through other reviews to see why this game could be well-received, and it appears that you will enjoy this game a lot if you don’t care about fancy level design or fancy cutscenes.

I personally felt that this game was too minimalist to justify the full price tag. I said previously that the developers didn’t take enough risks. I wouldn’t have minded if it was a little bit minimalist. Yes, choosing to have a minimalist design was indeed a risk they chose, but not a good one, in my opinion. I don’t feel like I’m getting enough gameplay for the price tag of the game when it was released.

I enjoyed Serious Sam 3 much more than this title. I hate to say it, but this game really feels like a cash grab. It’s certainly a difficult, fast-action shooter, but that’s really all it has going for it. The market is saturated with fast-action shooters, each having different features.

DOOM, however, really has a lack of features. It just doesn’t feel fun to play. Yes, the graphics are alright and the story, for its intended purpose, gets the job done. But, when I play the game, it just doesn’t feel fun. There are gun modifications and upgrades, but they only affect the gameplay slightly. When there is only a very finite number of enemy types and level choices, the game becomes boring to get through. Competitive matches with randomized opponents is certainly fun as well, but it’s just that it gets boring after a few matches.

Rather than actually try to take risks and make an interesting game based on the technology we see today, the marketing campaign instead advertises how they’re attempting to go back to their roots. That is certainly respectable, but I honestly wouldn’t have minded trying something fresh and new. As nebulous as it sounds, this game just doesn’t have the magic of its predecessors. What may have been fun over twenty years ago simply doesn’t hold up to today’s standards.

This game is quite literally one of the worst games I have ever spent money on. "Fun, fast paced, old school..." and the superlatives keep flowing like water. What are people talking about? I've played all the DOOM games, and consider myself pretty hip on the franchise, but what is this drivel? This game is basically devoid of a story, the mobs are brainless and repetitive, and the pacing is mind numbing. Travel to this arena, slay **** move over here, slay some more **** oh and while you are at it, listening to this **** metal soundtrack we cooked up. The "glory kill" mechanic was sweet for around 5 minutes. I don't need perfection, but for sixty, hard earned dollars, I expected a little bit better than nonsense. So please go buy something else, for all that is good and holy. Unless, you really don't care about any of the listed complaints, then knock your socks off, but if you are used to AAA shooters, a decent campaign and MP mode, or maybe want a breathe of a story, then I assure you that DOOM is not for you. Lastly, if a title is lacking in campaign then it better have superior online multiplayer. If a title is lacking solid online multiplayer then it should at least have a superior campaign. Its not a classic shooter in the vein of the original doom, marathon, quake etc. Its a serious sam style arena shooter and I've seen that done better before, the gunplay is rather lackluster, the weapon upgrades just blur the lines between various weapons in a player's inventory, the story is awful and completely at odds with the overall feel of doom's 1, 2 and 64, the survival horrorIts not a classic shooter in the vein of the original doom, marathon, quake etc. Its a serious sam style arena shooter and I've seen that done better before, the gunplay is rather lackluster, the weapon upgrades just blur the lines between various weapons in a player's inventory, the story is awful and completely at odds with the overall feel of doom's 1, 2 and 64, the survival horror elements have been removed and what made doom guy so relatable as a character was that he was a lone marine struggling for survival against hordes of demons and the odds were against him, people who have either not played or did not put the work in to understand the originals will sometimes say otherwise but vulnerability was an essential trait of the doom guy and was an essential part of the first 2 game's overall feel. That Doom guy while he wielded a powerful arsenal of weapons was still very vulnerable was conveyed not only via slower paced tracks in the games soundtracks but also by the gameplay.

In all the other Doom games, the Marine had to rely on health packs to heal himself, he was not just a psychopathic Demon killing machine who received fuel health via gruesome genocide(glory kills and gibs). This provided a layer of vulnerability to Doom guy and by extension the player because at the end of the day Doom guy is a pretty blank slated character who the player is meant to project himself onto. When you take away player vulnerability you remove and/or simply an element of strategy(health management) and it messes with the overall feel of the game, its rather hard to make a game scary and make players feel as though they are in danger and need to play methodically and exercise extreme caution when you have a health system that rewards you for murder and its also hard to project yourself onto a character whose only goal in life is to commit genocide against the demons who he hates. When a character is vulnerable and wants nothing more than to survive, accomplish his mission, and get out of the unfamiliar demon infested environment that he is in as soon as possible so he can put the whole thing behind him he's a lot more relate-able than a near-invincible psychopath.

Combine this with the fact that the level design is not like that of a classic 3D maze shooter and is more like that of painkiller, the over-designed weapons, the fact that secrets are not as opinion as they were in the originals because on higher difficulties many of the upgrades WILL be mandatory, the map system that tells you where "secrets" are thereby undermining the very definition of the word, the overdeisgned and sometimes outright ugly weapons with models that take up too much of the screen, the 12 demon limit, the fact that its DRM(Denuvo) makes modding impossible and that snapmap is a lackluster level editor leaving much to be desired, and finally that the multiplayer is complete and utter garbage and you end up with a game that barely broke even because it didn't capture the essence of what its series was supposed to be about. The game may be called Doom but It clearly isn't, a more appropriate name would be Painkiler 2: Halo in Hell Edition. Its not that its a bad game, so much as it just didn't do what it should have done as a reboot(that is to say bring the games design concepts and the games overall feel into the 21st century) which isn't a surprise.

I'm against reboots in general because their aim is almost always to use the brand recognition of the game that they are rebooting to sell a game that plays nothing like the original and trashes many if not all of its old design philosophies and concepts for new ones(and those new concepts are often objectively worse). They are for the most part, born of ill intentions and this is a fact that we as gamers should always keep in the forefront of our minds.

I genuinely think this game deserves a 7 or so out of 10, note that that is an above average score, not one you give to bad games, but because I want to counter the huge internet wide circlejerk that obnoxious fanboys who probably watch black men have sex with their wives on a regular basis some of whom I know rate the game 10/10, I'm going to give it a low score.

Seriously, if you just keep running and gunning constantly, then you will never get hit or take any damage at all. . . fml. Because of this, the harder difficulties are not hard at all. The AI doesn't get any smarter or use tactics or strategy of any kind (and hell you don't need to either). All harder difficulties do is turn the enemies into bigger bullet sponges who do more damage, but again, just keep moving and you'll be fine. In other words, all turning up the difficulty setting does is make it take longer to kill things instead of actually making the game harder. The only plus side to this game is that you aren't restricted to just two weapons, a primary and secondary. You can have and switch between all the weapons. Also, you have a self heal via "glory kill" which simply requires you to melee kill an enemy when they flash to get heals. You also have pretty much unlimited ammo in that when you are running low, all you have to do is chainsaw an enemy and out pops ammo for all your weapons. This game is the most casual piece of trash I have seen in a while. Would not recommend even in price drop. Don't bother. Expand
