Doom is incredibly fun and is easily the best first person shooter of the year so far with a great campaign and map maker. However the multiplayer falls flat and unfortunately all future DLC will be focused on it, but the campaign is more than worth the price.

Definitely an amazing single player, with a solid but different multiplayer and it even has a map creation mode similar to far cry with way more options. Would recommend to most anyone.

Its speed, over the top gore, and powerful satisfying gunplay make up for a long satisfying play session. Its upgrade and customization system is a nice touch, which gives a fairly long 15 hour campaign of constant mindless violence a bit more depth. I'm not saying mindless violence in the game is bad, I think the mindless action is tons of fun and addictive and their aren't many games that offer it, and is a nice breath of fresh air. Its just always nice to add extra content to make gameplay more interesting. You can upgrade armor and customize weapons. With armor you upgrade health, armor, and separate from that you can upgrade ammo capacity. The biggest part is weapon customization which add a useful secondary fire which also can be upgraded. There's also a perk like system where you complete challenges to earn perks that give you special abilitys. The enemies are very fast and fun to fight. The AI is pretty straight forward; spawn in a big group, run after him as fast as you can, move from his attacks, and hit him or shoot at him till he's dead. I had no problems with the AI at all because I feel its perfect for the kind of game it is. The reason is that these are demons from hell who are without any real human emotion, so thats why theyll kill till they die, and thats why they spawn in hordes. The gameplay is ment for fast instant combat without cover, and if the enemies ran away or hid behind cover when low on health it'll get rid of the flow of the game. It has a story thats kind of their, which I'm completely fine with because the original Dooms have never really had much at all an in depth campaign story. Doom has always been about crazy action and violence. What I got from the story is that it's mysterious, strange, and at times disturbing. Its honestly telling more of a backstory of how it all happened, mostly though holograms of key events and environmental story telling.

Even though Doom has most things right, their are some little flaws. With the weapons, theres a balanceing problem. I tend to almost always use the super shotgun, and I feel you get it a bit to early in the game so any other weapon you are useing at the begaining felt a bit useless. The other shotgun in the game, the combat shot gun is a bit too underpowered and even upgradeing it doesn't do much even after immediately finishing the early game levels. The super shotgun doesnt even have much to upgrade because of how O.P it already is. Even the rocket luncher is no much for the super shotgun. Even though balance is a bit of a problem, different weapons have different advantages. The super shotgun is the best at close quarter combat, the rocket launcher is best at range combat, the plasma and machine guns are best at very fast sweeping combat, which is basicly just constantly shooting like crazy at groups of enemies. After doing the same glory kills the hole game it gets really repetitve and less satisfying but its a great way to get health and can speed up gameplay through perk like upgrades. That may have seemed like a lot of very negative stuff but their two very minor things you dont notice much.

However, my expectations for the single player were set pretty high thanks to the excellent Wolfenstein The New Order. Doom just doesn't live up that game's story and setting.

Doom 3, for better or worse, tried to evolve Doom and after Wolfenstein TNO I hoped Doom 4 would follow its example. That did not happen.

This Doom is pretty much 100% a retread of the original Doom formula and thats great if that is what your just looking for in Doom, but I expected more after nearly 10 years of waiting since Doom 3.

Still a great game, but definitely a solid 8/10.

Hopefully, Id will take more risks next time.

Side note, please dont buy the season pass, its just for multiplayer dlc. The multiplayer is ok, but definitely not worthy of a season pass for $39.99...

So what is our hero to do? Fight like hell! Doom is a throwback to when games didn't need to be bogged down with complex story-lines, cultural references, huge set pieces, or crazy amounts of multiplayer content to be considered great. What you find instead is a wonderfully gory bad-ass death dealing experience.

The goriest and most satisfying moments in Doom are found in its almost 13-hour campaign. While the actual story is rather bland, the combat is what compels you to keep plugging away at the game. Gone are the days where you’re forced to use cover and military tactics to complete your missions, Doom lets you actually live out an action movie. You’re motivated to move from enemy to enemy, dealing out enormous amounts of damage at every enemy in your path, arena style. Your Doom Guy doesn’t know when to stop. Your character moves at a ridiculously fast pace to creating a hectic sense of combat. You’re given tons of opportunities to use the environment within combat as well. Jumping from platform to platform is so seamless that it becomes second nature to bounce around for better combat vantage points.

"You’re motivated to move from enemy to enemy, dealing out enormous amounts of damage at every enemy in your path, arena style."

Onto the guns! Aside from the main weapon choices in Doom, you also have a hand full of special weapons that offer a unique tool. You can finish off a horde of enemies with a single shot from the classic BFG or turn a single demon into a pile of gory giblets with the chainsaw. The chainsaw is easily the highlight of your special weapon choices. Not only do you witness one the bloodiest death scenes in a game, you also have a tool to save you from a situation where ammo is just not available. You get an instant, satisfying kill with your chainsaw and, out of the bloody carcass of whichever poor demon is on the receiving end of your beautiful weapon, you get a rain of ammo as a reward. Do you kill off the demon tossing rockets everywhere or do you save your fuel (which is located throughout a level for the chainsaw) for when your ammo supply begins to dry out? Doom presents so many intense battles that your choices are all split second decisions that never feel too overwhelming.

I found myself never utilizing the full arsenal at my disposal. The plasma gun felt a little under-powered and my poor pistol never saw the light of day unless I was completely out of ammo. After acquiring most of the weapons in the game, I came to realize that some weapons shared the same ammo pool. It was an interesting concept, but I felt forced to hold off using some inferior weapons so that I didn’t lose the ammo needed for the more interesting options. Everyone will have their own favorites, of course, but it felt a little too restrictive for me. The variety given each weapon is impressive with the upgrade system.

"Every new area you visit is more impressive than the last."

Doom is split into three parts and the multiplayer is the black sheep in the bunch. There is a bit of a disjointed feel to the combat in the multiplayer side of Doom. My attacks didn’t feel as effective against live opponents, and I would have loved for some of that bad-ass feeling from the single player campaign to find its way into multiplayer. At times, you can pick up the demon power-up which was the highlight of my experience. Thrashing around and causing mayhem as a baron of hell never gets tiring. With that being said, it felt like far too much of an advantage. I played way too many matches where one team had the demon rune consistently throughout a match, and no amount of skill could overcome.

SnapMap is by far one of the simplest tools to create imaginative gameplay that I have seen in a shooter. Snapping enemies, power-ups, environments, and all manner of goodness is a button click away. You never feel overwhelmed with your choices after working through the well-made tutorial. The SnapMap also allows you to share your custom games or explore amazing created content from players around the world. One of the best examples was a match I played where you faced endless waves of enemies in a “horde mode” where communication and cooperation with other players is key. After having that much fun with such a simple SnapMap creation, I look forward to what other types of games the player base can create.

All in all its not a bad multiplayer, just pretty standard and forgettable. I certainly won't play it again. However, I must encourage you not to let that put you off. If you are looking for replay value, snapmap has you covered. The amount of depth snapmap has is insane, pretty much anything you want to make can be made in snapmap. There is already thousands of snapmap content provided by the community, and some of it blew my mind with how creative they were. I played 1 map called music maker (has coop support as well) and you can literally design a beat in a step sequencer on the floor, then play a keyboard along with it. I also had a good laugh when I seen the creator had taken a little extra time to add in the much requested cowbell. I played another map which was a funny take on whack a mole named "whack a soul". The name alone had me in hysterical laughter, but the game itself evolved my joyful laughter into painful laughter as I found myself at an arcade machine with flaming skulls moving left to right and shooting them with a shotgun. The whole thing lasted about 30 seconds and the map then triggered a victory since apparently I beat the high score. I bet heshe probably spent a lot longer than that designing it all just to provide 30 second s of laughter. Ahhhh, how I love the gaming community! Of course, there are more serious maps. For instance, a remake of doom 1 episode 1 first level of the classic! A few other examples are a Call Of Duty zombies style mode where you use points to buy weapons, health, powerups or open a door. A raid boss, playable in coop that actually scales to the amount of players in game. You have to see it to believe it, snapmap is the best feature of any video game I ever played. The dev have put the replayability of doom in the gamers hands and it is the best thing they could have done. Unfortunately, the tutorial is quite vague. It states the obvious but fails to teach the more complex features of snapmap. I honestly didn't learn much more than I could've figured out on my own. To learn complex stuff, I had to do a little bit of digging on google plus analysing some of the templates the game offers to learn certain things myself e.g setting amount of player lives lost before game over is triggered. I would've thought something like that would be simple to setup but I couldn't have been more wrong, had to tweak quite a bit of game logic to get it set up. I know I will hit many more creative walls in snapmap, thanks to not every feature being explained. I suggest waiting for a user to post a more in depth guide if you want to save yourself hours of frustration. Of course, a lot of things are easy in snapmap and the possibilities are huge. Overall, the campaign not bringing enough new features to the table and the standard multiplayer let doom down, but snapmap more than makes up for it. Without snapmap I would have given doom a 7 (Skippable, but a fairly decent blast from the past), but snapmap earns an extra point for both adding an immense amount of replay value and offering some of the best and easiest creation tools any game has ever had for consoles and pc. I couldn't justify giving doom anything lower than an 8. Expand

If you're on the fence about this game, don't be! I'd never played a Doom game before and am officially a fan!

I was originally hesitant because there didn't appear to be any story and I'm typically of the camp that if the game doesn't have a story then it's not worth my time & gameplay looked repetitive in the sense "go to this area, clear out enemies....now do the same over here"

Doom focuses so much on gameplay, level design & atmosphere that you almost don't notice that the story is minimal and you are just going from area to area introducing demons to your shotgun. They do this with fast, frenzied gunplay & challenging the way you approach combat. Each section of the game gives you "challenges" which task you to take out enemies a certain way or explore your surroundings in order to gain points for upgrading your armor & guns.

This game is a breath of fresh air! Regenerating health? Nope. Reloading...yeah no! But finding yourself in pinch with little to no ammo as a Hell Knight bears down on you only to be cut down by your chainsaw so that he spills ammo to keep you in the fight just that much longer....oh hell yes!

Let me start by saying this review is solely in regards to the multiplayer aspect of this title. My time with the campaign has been limited and quite frankly, I didn't make the purchase to play through the story even though reviews of it have been mostly positive.

Doom's Multiplayer is actually a bit challenging to critique. When broken down component by component, you will find there are some aspects that seem to be lacking that extra something to take it from a good title to a great title. With that being said, collectively the multiplayer experience is quite enjoyable even if at the end of the day it is somewhat basic when compared to other online shooters of this generation. In actuality it may be that simplicity that makes Doom such a blast to play online. Users aren't stuck endlessly customizing their load outs for every possible map and scenario, or caught up in needless weapon upgrade menus deciding which minuscule item to add to their rifle, the user simply hops in and begins to cause as much carnage as possible.
The gameplay, while not exactly being top tier in regards to physics/mechanics, runs surprisingly smooth considering the sheer amount of craziness taking place at any given moment. What do I mean by craziness? To put it simply, Doom's beauty is in its chaos. Whether you're in an object based game, or playing good old fashion team deathmatch, there will never be a shortage of flat out destruction taking place all around you.
This is partially due to your weapon options. While being somewhat limited in selection, Doom's guns are definitely one of its strong points. From rocket launchers to mortar converting shotguns, players have enough options to create load outs that can range from an up close and personal game style to a more balanced mid range attack class. Perhaps the best thing about these weapons is the fact that players can select any two they want for their load out. There are no distinctions between a "primary" or "secondary" weapons. What does this mean? It means gone are the days of running out of ammo and having to run around with your little pistol between your legs, don't worry you have a second weapon that can be just as powerful as your first.

The game's maps also add to the fast paced style of play. Utilizing relatively small and close quarter designs with a good level of verticality gives players instant access to the action yet allows just enough space for multiple playing styles. Add in super weapon and demon spawns and you are left with a world where there is little escaping Doom's high level of violence, sorry campers.

When it comes to customization, you're really only going skin deep however this is not a bad thing. With an insane amount of armor options, and the color/pattern schemes that can be altered, users can be confident that no two players (at least aesthetically) will be alike. Loadout customization is as straight forward as it gets, pick two guns and one piece of gear and go. Not too much intricacy here, and there doesn't have to be.

Overall Doom's multiplayer experience is straight forward and perfect for anyone who enjoys fast paced online shooters. With never relenting action and violence, this game offers a good option to anyone looking to bulster their FPS collection.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This game made me indeed remember when I was little and played the old Doom. The yellow, red and blue keys, the mazes I would get lost and the arcade pace the game goes about. The game is not very long in it's single player campaign, but as we can go back to previous stages to collect upgrades left behind, the game will have at least 15 hours of gameplay until you start doing some multiplayer.

One thing I didn't like is that at some point we get two runes, Rich gets Richer and Armored Offensive that are too much better than the others, we get almost limitless ammunition and the game lose some depth. The game has some bugs yet, it crashed with me at least once every two missions, and a lot of players have similar complaints. I'm not taking this into consideration in my evaluation, since I know it will be fixed soon, but for such an expensive game, and to some extent simple, it should not have happened.

The game kept the arcade style of the series, we aim down the sights with just a few weapons, the others have modified fire by pressing the right mouse button. The character moves fast and in this game I saw something that I never had seem before, we can finish the enemies with melee attacks. At first it seemed not such a good idea, but it doesn't hurt the rhythm of the battle at all and add more gruesomeness to the game.

If you want a terror atmosphere this game is not for you. The character is a very powerful hero, we don't feel afraid or worry about what is lurking in the darkness, the battles are very open and predictable in areas that are similar to arenas. The immense power of our hero and the great quantity of enemies that attack us make for a fast paced arcade game focused on the action, not terror.

The music is very nice, but I thought the game is a little too colorful. I'd expect something more grim and gloom. Our character never speaks, which is good, since it avoids the danger of creating a bad personality and it's easier to identify with. We deal with just two NPCs, that are machines. In short, a very nice game if you want speed and action.

Based purely on the campaign I'd give this title a 10. Its fast, brutal, and meshes new school and old school FPS perfectly. But the lackluster multiplayer doesn't mesh the two eras of shooter as effectively and leaves you with an empty and lackluster feeling, and snapmap is a fun novelty, but ultimately more boring than anything else. Doom is a continuation/reboot of the classic mid-90s shooter of the same name, although at first glance you may mistake it for Rage which was also released by id Software in 2011. Unlike a lot of games that attempt to modernize releases of the past, Doom stays mostly faithful to the classic style that made the game so popular. You move around the maps extremely quickly, in a motion that isn't so much running as it is gliding. I like to imagine that your character has one of those hoverboard things strapped to his feet and that's what he's rolling around on. Most of the levels are based around key hunting puzzles that you have to solve when you aren't up to your eyeballs in hordes of demons. There are health and armor pickups that you need to hunt down when your health is low rather than simply hiding behind the nearest wall. And the weapons all feel satisfying to use and never need to be reloaded (except for one, which was almost never used for that exact reason).

Another thing Doom loves is it's upgrades. They come in three main flavors: character upgrades, weapon upgrades, and weapon upgrades for your weapon upgrades. This may sound confusing so I'll clarify: the weapon upgrades add a secondary firing ability to your weapons, while the weapon upgrades for the weapon upgrades further enhance that ability with things like more powerful shots and reduced cooldowns. The character upgrades and weapon upgrades are usually fairly well hidden in the game's large and open maps, meaning that exploration is both encouraged and worth your while. The weapon upgrades for your weapon upgrades on the other hand are given out like they're free samples. You get them for finding secret areas (which often contain the aforementioned weapon/character upgrades), completing in game challenges, or for simply just killing a lot of enemies. Since killing enemies is almost always required before you can proceed to the next area, you will get many of these upgrade tokens without having to sweat about it too much. And if you aren't feeling overpowered enough after all that, the game also places short term powerups in many of the battle zones. These range from very very helpful to very very useless, and I found I was really good at finding them almost immediately after I had finished killing all the enemies in the room.

If you're playing Doom for the story then you're probably playing it for the wrong reasons, but I'll go ahead and give you the gist anyway. Doom takes place on Mars and in Hell, which looks suspiciously like Mars but with more floating platforms and blood. A group of scientists were looking to solve Mars' energy crisis, and decided the best way to go about this was to use the energy from Hell. Along the way one of the scientists decided to release a bunch of Hell's demons on the promise that she would be taken care of by the demons, because that always works out so well for those people who decide to go that route. The story is mostly played out in the background, with the Doomguy quite obviously not caring about anything that doesn't involve shooting or punching things, and to it's credit the game understands that and allows you to skip past most of it. There are a few moments when the pacing grinds to a halt and you're forced to listen to dialogue, but they're fairly short. The only story you really need to understand is this: 1. You're a badass marine. 2. There are tons of demons with copious amounts of blood, squishy organs, and bones more breakable than a suicide pact between angsty teenage girls, 3. Go nuts.

Doom fills the void of arcade style shooter better than any game has in recent memory. It turns the mindless violence switch up to 11 from the very beginning and doesn't stop until the end credits. Enjoy killing the unambiguously evil enemies, hunt for all the secrets the game has to offer, and use the brief dialogue intermissions as an excuse to go refill your snack pile.

Besides shooting, the game also has some platforming and exploring. The levels are very well put together, so jumping around and exploring every corner not only adds playtime, but it is fun as well. I didn't find even half of the secrets (maybe like 30% secrets, 10% collectibles), but it still was satisfying whenever I found one.

The music also compliments the game well. It is metal and gives more agency to the fights.

The game does have some flaws though. First off, there were some glitches, specifically when enemies don't spawn. This forced me to reload my game twice. Secondly, the game struggles in long play sessions. It gets a bit too repetitive, especially in the second half when there are less new enemies, locations and guns. And finally, the multiplayer is fun but nothing special.

Despite the flaws, Doom is must play for any FPS fan. Do yourself a favor and pick it up.

First, I want to say "Shut up and take my money".

Doom is beautiful. Excellent music for battle with demons. How long have there been no games that challenge you. Here, no one will drive you by the handle. There is no shooting range "with advanced" AI.

Here, health is not restored itself. Yes, this is the same Doom straight from 1994, but in a modern cover.

The story here does not matter. It is very generic and forgettable but never detracts from the flow of game-play. The lore is there however but only through codex entries and some stuff in the map. The game-play and pure violence and anger portrayed through the Doom Slayer is what makes this game so special. The game is smooth and fast. The gun play feels perfect and the weapons feel diverse and creative. The enemies are all unique and have different abilities that make the battles diverse and fun to play against. The game perfectly creates fast paced battles that aren't just mindless blood fests. The strategy in strafing and evading demons and choosing who to take out first and how is super satisfying. The upgrades are quite shallow but some of the weapon abilities are super fun. The game is perfectly paced always mixing up smooth platforming, demon blasting, and spectacular boss fights. However the game does suffer a little bit from repetitive areas where your forced to take out a room of demons and move forward. While the campaign is amazing the multiplayer is disappointing. The maps are all the same and very tight corridors locking you in the same battle. Demon runes are fun at first but then just become obnoxious. Load outs do not feel right and i would have preferred a different system. Also the progression system has barley anything meaningful except for bad cosmetics and weapons that are easily unlocked. Thankfully this is partially made up for by the snap map mode which offers many creative levels and give you the tools to make your own. It also features other bonus content like the arcade mode. Overall a complete package with a very lacking multiplayer but a phenomenal campaign experience with much replay value. Expand

I had a load of fun with this game. It's classic DOOM in the sense your only concern is to kill everything that moves. And ripping off a demons jaw is always satisfying. It's not supposed to be deep or thought provoking. It's just an almost constant edge of your seat battle with some great boss fights. If you want a game that's solely designed for intensity and fun. This is a true Doom game. No reloading, no stopping to regain health in cover, just pure fun. DOOM capitalizes off of the most primal impulses of the modern public, allowing a sort of outlet to unleash anger built up inside the player, in its exclusive goriness and grit. Blood will spill as you rip and tear your way to the top. The only thing that brings it down for me is the fact that in comparison to DOOM: Eternal, its sequel, DOOM is sluggish, lacking dashing and the meat hook upgrade for the Super Shotgun. In addition, the multiplayer is extremely lackluster and disappointing. Besides these minor issues, however, this is a must-play. Expand

This is how you reboot a franchise! Doom 2016 manages to retain the same fast-action paced adrenaline filled gameplay of the originals, completely reviving one of the most important titles of the gaming industry.

This game doesn’t f*ck around! Use your baddass arsenal to slay demons! As you progress though the levels you are showered with hordes after hordes of different types of monsters, increasing the difficulty as it goes on; after killing the waves, exploration is pretty welcome as there is much to uncover with some cool items that really can make a difference gameplaywise.

Those items are basically your upgrades “fees”, letting you maximize your health/ammo, giving you great passive effects and my favorite: weapon mods. The balance between the intense horde and exploration makes for an amazing experience and although the game is around 15 hours-long it does seem longer since there is no “downtime”.

As expected from a Doom title, the game is pretty challenging. I played on the hard mode (Ultra-Violence) and I died a lot, especially at the beginning as my inventory was lacking and I was still learning the ins and outs of the game. As they advise you: standing still is death! So I changed the controls in a way I could jump with L1 making it for a much better fluid gameplay as I moved like crazy during fights.

The ammo is something you must manage so changing weapons and using your entire arsenal is a necessity and very fun since the weapons are all great, very diverse and have their own niche of usage.

Doom also reminds the lazy developers of other games how good music enhances the experience. The heavy metal it plays fits perfectly with the chaotic nature of the game and its gruesome fights; so much better than the current trend of having no music.

As for the downsides: the game could use some puzzles despite finding keycards to open gates and there should be more bosses as there are only four, they are very challenging but they could use some work.

Another thing that I don’t like is that sometimes the game arbitrarily halts your backtracking by closing a gate or something impeding you to 100% the level. I understand when it’s a cliff you can’t back up but random gates popping up are annoying.

All in all Doom is an awesome testosterone filled game! No microtransactions, no downtime, no bullsh*t, just run‘n gun using your badd*ss arsenal to send demons back to the depths of hell!

A puzzle game where you have to think what to kill first in what way, using your resources with intelligence. Yes, that is Doom (2016). And the story bits that you find along the way are interesting enough and create a sense of madness and evil that impregnates every corner of Mars.

Worst than Doom 3, a bit better than Doom II, and much much better than the awful Doom: Eternal.

    TLDR:
    8.5/10 Pros :

Epic weapons Epic monsters Epic fast paced action Great main character feeling ( the doom slayer )
    Just fun!!
    Grotesquely violent action Cons :

Near the end of the game the “arena “ type fights become a bit monotonous.

This game needs to be played on high difficulty!!

Doom wants you to arrive at the end of the level, covered in guts, by sparing naught even a hellish underling. It is a very structured FPS at heart, but not sacrificing fun and personability. Armed with an extensive arsenal of weapons, you choose how you go about eviscerating, dismembering, or exploding demons in your permissive rage-filled steroidal man child tantrum. Choose a constant stream of plasma to eat holes through a Hell Baron, a well-timed rocket launcher blast for a triple kill of Imps, or remove a pesky Mancubus by resorting to chainsaw seppuku. The game is fun from front to back: one constant joy ride of a power trip.

Gameplay is truly where the game excelled in my opinion. It is just darn fun to shoot. As God of War (2018) mastered the feeling of using the Leviathan axe, I genuinely felt powerful in Doom (2016). Any individual non-boss monster can be dispatched with ease, once the technique and machinery are obtained. The challenge lies in balancing the methods necessary once a single enemy spawns into a murderous multitude. No enemy is a bullet sponge, but thinking straight in a bullet storm is the challenge. In addition, no weapon feels unnecessary once another is unlocked, but each successive gun feels like a ladder rung towards domination and freedom of skill in the arena. A welcome surprise, never have thought I would enjoy not having to reload. Reflexively in the opening moments, I would press square to reload, not used to each weapon being a bottomless clip. While your total ammo reserve will certainly deplete, ammo is never too far off if clever. This streamlining serves to fuel the game to be faster and focus on what is fun, shooting.

The story did not rank as high for me. It was not as compelling as others, but the characters were oh so cool. I wanted to keep moving forward just to hear another monologue from Samuel Hayden, the game's cybernetic deuteragonist. Doom Slayer is hilarious as well. In a current climate where games, meant to be fun, are forced to play serious roles and convey "meaning," Doom Slayer repeatedly breaks free from the voice telling him what to do. It's a welcome change.

    Great game. 8/10.

The game also runs great, it's incredibly well optimized.

I'd also like to add that I love the idea of demons being scared of the protagonist, that's a very nice twist on the genre.

The story is quite bare bones and characters get very little in terms of development, but there is a bit of humour in there to spice things up.

The arenas can make the game feel a bit less immersive and more "gamey" as well.

Overall a great time if you like the genre.

It was a good game, definitely very polished and had enough nods to the classic games to be nostalgic, while also giving you modern graphics and silky-smooth gunplay.

To me there wasn't much depth to the game. It's kill demons here and kill demons there. This isn't necessarily a bad thing, as some games nowadays are too complicated for their own good. A game like Doom (2016) reminds you that good, mindless action can be just what you're looking for in a video game.

There was a decent bit of weapon and character modding, but to me the gun mods seemed kind of forced. There was enough variety in the weapons themselves that I think the mods tended to be a little redundant and seemed unnecessary. The addition of a chainsaw was cool, and added some cool moments and animations, but was definitely OP. However, the scarcity of fuel (ammo) prevents you from abusing it.

After all is said and done, I don't find myself wanting more since beating it. Therefore, I don't see myself playing Doom Eternal, as I'm sure it's more of the same formula.

Overall, Doom (2016) was an entertaining play-through for me, especially at the bargains prices that this game can be had for in 2022.

It suffers from the familiar feeling of being a multiplayer game at heart rather than a single player campaign; the maps feel like death match arenas linked together rather than a real environment to explore and the pick ups are either dropped by slain enemies or are scattered around like loot. Slightly disappointing as the previous games rank amongst my favourite ever games, but it's a solid enough shoot 'em up that unfortunately fails to reach the heady heights of its predecessors. Other than the recent Wolfenstein games there is nothing that really offers this sort of thing on current consoles and it makes a refreshing change to play a linear FPS that is simply about using big guns to shoot lots of monsters, especially when the gameplay is so solidly put together.

The only things that lets it down is that the gameplay doesn’t evolve at all from start to finish (other than adding new monsters and weapons) and, as a result, things became really repetitive well before the end of the 12+ hour campaign and I personally would have been much happier had the game come to an end a few hours sooner.

Got very tiresome after a while. Controls are a bit off. They feel very fluid but a little floaty with no sprint button. Can you believe that? It's tough to navigate around some of the faster moving demons and the stupid small sections they throw you in to fight them. They should have added sprint and some open area levels to make full use of the weapons because most enemies just rush you all the time.

Visually it's superb like some of the UAC facility levels, weapons, few enemy designs (revenant, the undead and cacodemon being the only ones that stood out), and slick menu presentation. Loading times are ridiculous. Audio is hit and miss. Sound effects are good but some of the gun sounds and explosions are weak. Had to crank my volume a little bit. They nailed the music which is constantly there sometimes subtlety or full force.

A sequel or DLC needs to add more variety (Phobos and Deimos?) because it was overall missing something I can't quite put my finger on? It badly needed something fresh because it all felt too mundane. That's not to say it sucks. It was a blast to play but too arcade-ish for me. Worth a rental or pick it up when it drops to $20.

I'm writing a quick review based on my first few hours of gameplay in campaign mode only. If you're thinking about buying this game, maybe this information will help you decide.

First, let's cut the crap. This game is not a 9 or 10, nor is it a 1 or 2. I'm giving it a 7 for the reasons listed below.

This is a reboot of the original DooM, nothing more and nothing less. If you were expecting something that plays like DooM 3, please adjust your expectations. This game is fast paced, the enemies are numerous, and you must sustain yourself by picking up the ammo and life items the enemies drop when you kill them. Again, just like the original DooM of yore. You also pick up key cards and look for hidden caches. Nothing new here for veterans of DooM.

If I were to compare this to other games, it is a mix of original DooM, DooM 3 (in the graphics, atmosphere, and sound department) and Space Marine. The combat gives you plenty of choices, but the funnest option is to set up your "Glory kills" with your guns. That is, you stun the enemy with a gun shot, then finish them with your R3 button at closer range. Combat is fluid and it works, in my opinion.

Here is what the game does not have:
    Aiming down the sights
    Cut scenes
    Very much dialogue

All of which is a plus for me, not a minus. If you like "cinematic" games like The Last of Us, this game is probably not for you. If you like games like DooM 1 and 2, Half Life, and Metroid, this game is probably for you. I've always considered long dialogues and cut scenes in video games to be a waste of my time. I like the story to be told by exploring the game world and playing the game.

Whether or not you want to wait for a price drop (or skip this altogether) depends on how much you loved (or did not love) the run and gun style of older shooters.

Again, I have not dipped my toes into multi player yet. That could alter my review and if it does I'll update this review

Good reboot of the doom games. Captures the combat intensity of the classic games but brings the series up to speed with modern mechanics and technology. Upgrading equipment is a lot of fun. Combat can get a bit tedious since there isn't much to break up the shooting aspect of the game. I also wish there were more narrow spaces and hallways like the original games had.

The game also hits that early 90’s nostalgia. Wolfenstein 3D and Doom were the first first person shooters, and I will never forget the great times I had with them.

However, after a few decades of shooters, the shooting for the sake of shooting isn’t enough anymore. Doom (2016) does little more than drop enemies into the area, require the player to kill all of them, and then open a path to rinse and repeat. Some games have a relentless momentum like Halo: CE to Reach. In this games, you and decide strategically how to deal with enemies or blast past them if you want to. Even in a grindfest like Destiny, you can find the fastest path. Not so in Doom. You have to run and gun in small arenas until all the enemies are dead. Only then can you proceed.

Storywise, the game has little. I did appreciate the story being told from the 1st person perspective like Half-Life. I just want more story. Maybe I want more personality. There are no sense of stakes and no one to care about. Everything takes place on Mars or in Hell. So what if Mars becomes a gateway to Hell? The demons don’t have spaceships. Can’t the humans just nuke them?

All in all, Doom (2016) is a polished game that offers some fun, old school gameplay. I would have liked to have seen more from it, but I appreciate the effort that Bethesda put into what they offered. The game is on the high side of 7.

I enjoyed the metal music during the arena fights but once in a while the music blared to overpowering levels into my ear during a small skirmish of crap easy enemies and it would not stop blaring until quitting the actual game.
