The Different Environments that you go to in the levels are breathtaking especially the second the last level that is stunning. I might get flack for this but I prefer the boss fights in doom 2016 I found them a lot more entertaing other than the Marauder it was always a joy to fight him.
It annoys me how the bosses don't drop heath and ammo anymore like they did in doom 2016 and I also found some of the platforming to be a nightmare but most of it I loved.
I hated that they tried to give a back story to doom guy that annoyed me quite a bit because doom guy rips and tears he dose not need a backstory. anyway that's just what I think. all in all doom eternal is a extremely good game but I still prefer doom 2016. thanks for reading my revew

When I played DOOM 2016 I was in a constant rush. Shoot whatever the hell you see! Rip and tear! One of my favorite games of all time. With DOOM Eternal I do not have this feeling at all.

Firstly, the sound just feels off. Weapons do not have a good punch and the music doesn't mix well. The sound feels muffled and unsatisfying as if something is really going wrong there. For some reason

For some reason the music doesn't elevate the experience either and tracks are boring quickly unlike in DOOM 2016.
The animations of glory kills can sometimes be funny and creative but 70% of them feel familiar and they are far more fluid in their animation than the one's in DOOM 2016. Just not a very satisfying feeling.
Next, the game looks and feels very arcade-like, and I just can't take this world seriously. The environments are a visual overload of bizarness and although levels differ from each other in visuality, within a level the visuals feel very same-y and corridor like. I feel very restricted in where I can go and am constantly running into walls wondering:"where do i need to go?" until I find that one path I can go past.
First I was not interested in finding secrets as well. The platforming just makes traversing in levels an unenjoyable experience and I am not interested i doing more of that. I have done a playthrough where I collected all the secrets and you do this by pausing the game every area and you can see on the map where the secrets are. Badly designed in my opinion.
I do feel they advanced the complexity of the combat a lot and you really need to juggle constantly between weapons and other gadgets to survive. They teach you all this by pausing the game and jarringly telling you what you need to do in text. Still I needed to replay the game after a few hours as you need to learn so much at the start. If you feel you are failing in juggling these things at the start I advice you to do the same. The complexity doesn't make the game more fun btw, because the shooting itself is still unsatisfying.
More importantly, juggling the combat on a ps4 controller rough. I'd advice replacing the dash to R3 so you keep your finger on the right stick for aiming. Still throwing and switching grenades and using the flame belch requires you to get your finger off of the analog sticks which makes using these tools harder. Switching to a specific weapon can not be done quickly by design as you need to hold it for a bit for the weapon wheel to show up. Using the quickswitch R1 between shotgun and sentinel works wonders though.
Now the graphics on ps4 are actually a downgrade from DOOM 2016. I think the complexity of the far backgrounds takes a lot out of the computing power, because the lighting is worse now. I believe people if they say it is an upgrade on pc, but not on ps4. I did not notice any frame rate dips though, so that's great.
The last aspect are the new cinematics. The opening cutscene is nice, but the rest is just okay. They are nor boring nor very enjoyable, but they do take your time of from the shooting, so I'll skip them next time. Honestly, they shouldn't have bothered on most of them as the story is also explained badly and I have no idea what everybody is talking about 80% of the time. If you read the lore it will likely make total sense, but I bought a game, not a book. I want to be able to get the gist of it without having to read anything, as DOOM 2016 did so well.
To conclude, I think this game just misses a lot of focus on making a campaign that is concise and enjoyable to go through multiple times without annoying platforming. The feel of the combat is now worse in terms of giving you a brutal feel in terms of animations and sound, which makes it hard for the more advanced mechanics to shine. I am surprised how this game turned out to be.

Note: the Dark-Souls style invasion multiplayer IS NOT IN THE GAME YET

    Single player:

Lack of features compared to current DOOM 2016, as well as believe it or not an even more basic story with a shorter campaign, lots of Lore and backstory to read though which is very cool. The arsenal is sick but still just a redesigned DOOM 2016 arsenal with a different swing on each weapons mainly through the returning weapon mods system. Isn't as "Dark" as DOOM 2016's Mars and Hell setting and moves towards a . No map maker mode this time which is a shame for me.

    Multiplayer:

Classic pvp Multiplayer modes has been replaced with a pretty basic 2 Demons vs Slayer mode, fun as as a gimmick for a few hours with friends but you'll have to really be into either the team based game-play of the Demons with a pal or just love the uphill fight of battling the two coordinating demons

The games combat sets an impossibly high bar to top, it being smooth, satisfying and metal af! I've heard people complain about the story leaving them lost as some things arent directly explained such as the Hell Priests and the Night Sentinels, this explanation isnt needed if you arent playing for an in depth story all you must know is the overarching goal of the Khan Maykr. But even if you arent there for deep lore, I HIGHLY recommend you read some of the codexes it is very interesting and makes the Doomslayer all the more badass. As for cutscenes, they are amazing, they make you and the Doomslayer feel like an absolute heavy metal god, this definetly brings forth flaws in 2016 in my opinion due to the fact that in these cutscenes you are able to compare your self to the puny humans you meet and you are actually recognised as a strong rage filled warrior. This point lacks in th 2016 game, you feel much more badass with people to interact with and a story to explain why your ruining the devilish day of these demons. My final point will be around platforming, I dont have a problem with the platforming, though at times feels buggy and frustrating, its fine for me as it makes each level less flat (Of which 2016 felt a lot like) and expands the level design to make it more interactive for traversal and combat elements. The only complaint i have with the platforming is that it seems less natural. To conclude, i loved Doom 2016 and thought it was a great game but Doom Eternal exceeded my expectations (which were already extremely high) and is by far the best game of 2020 and could well be the best game for the rest of the year. After finishing Doom 2016 earlier this year, I was excited to see what Doom Eternal would do and I can say I was not disappointed. Doom Eternal improves upon what was in Doom 2016 and then some, the movement has been improved greatly with the new dash ability which made demon killing easier and cooler too. The weapons and the mods have been overhauled giving more variety in my demon killing arsenal, compared to Doom 2016 where I normally stuck to a certain weapon, mainly the super shotgun. But in Eternal, every weapon and mod has its use, the precision bolt having probably be biggest glow up due to effective against certain enemies and enemy parts, and also has a satisfactory pop sound with every headshot.

the story of Doom eternal is Pretty good, I wouldn't say the story blew me away but it was definitely good, but I didn't really come to Doom Eternal for a story, as John Cormack said himself "Story in a game is like a story in a porn movie. It's expected to be there, but it's not that important."
But one of the main driving factors for my excitement for Doom Eternal was the soundtrack by composer Mick Gordon who once again knocks it out of the park, the soundtrack gets you pumped and gets you ready to rip and tear, the mixture of electronic and heavy metal as well as a heavy metal choir occasionally appearing in certain tracks really gets the adrenaline pumping and makes you feel unstoppable, my personal favourite tracks from the soundtrack are Gladiator or BFG10000.

The demons of Doom are back and meaner than before, with new demons joining the party too. personal favourites of mine like cacodemon and Barons of hell looking better than ever, though my all time favourite demon the Revenant didn't seem to get that sort of treatment, actually looking better and creepier in Doom 2016 compared to eternal.

Though this game is really good, there are a few things I wasn't a fan of unfortunately. I wasn't a fan of the marauder enemies, now I can imagine there will be those who say that I should just "git gud" and you’re probably right, they just frustrated me a bit too much sometimes but I might have to possibly try another method I haven't thought of to easily dispatch them. The other complaint that I would have would be having certain aspects of the levels that slow or limit the slayers movement speed, I just feel it's weird to have the game basically telling you to do things fast and punishing you for being slow to then slow you down for certain parts which just sit well with me for some reason. these are little complaints I have but besides that there isn't much wrong I can say about it, the gameplay and mechanics are basically perfect I can't fault them.

the multiplayer is an interesting idea which I hope id software keep building upon and don't forget about it, I don't think theres much of bias on who's more likely to win, slayer or demon. though it does feel great playing the demons with their unique abilities. from all the Battlemode games I've played, I've had about equal demon and slayer game time and had similar win rates as I kinda felt it was hard to lose really, I don't know if the people I was getting paired against were just trying it out for the first time but I have lost a match yet. But despite that I still like the game mode and is a much better multiplayer mode than the multiplayer in Doom 2016 and I'm glad the tried something new.

Overall, Doom Eternal is probably my favourite fps game of this console generation, its weapon mechanics and gunplay are faultless, the music gets you pumped the slay demons, the demons are challenging and fun to fight against, and the multiplayer is a nice change of pace compared to other multiplayer modes.

Doom Eternal is the most disappointing game I have ever played. The platforming is a disaster, the UI is garish and counter-intuitive, the cutscenes exist, melee probably should have been removed if they were gonna make it this weak. The platforming is a disaster, the UI is garish and counter-intuitive, the cutscenes exist, melee probably should have been removed if they were gonna make it this weak. The dash, while good in theory makes normal movement feel slow which is exactly the opposite of how Doom should feel. And finally, the ammo management. The max ammo you can hold has been cut by more than half since Doom 2016. Insecure fanboys will shout (and I mean SHOUT) all kinds of justifications about this at you, but the fundamental issue is this: Doom eternal wants you play the game a very specific way. For all the talk about how it's "strategic" it forces you to adopt one very specific strategy--use all the ammo in all your guns then hunt down trash demon and chainsaw it for more ammo. There's two problems with this. First, I don't want to be forced into a specific way of playing the game. Second, the game does a TERRIBLE job telling you that that's the intended way to play and even worse job encouraging it. If you're going to make killing imps/possessed the name of the game, you should make it so they don't stop spawning until the big baddies are dead. And should make sure that they aren't on the other side of the arena than the mini-boss enemies. Having to turn around and sprint away from a mancubus so I can chainsaw an imp in some odd corner of the arena isn't just a limiting design decision; it's an objectively bad one and on that runs counter to the supposed "keep pushing forward nature of Doom."

The devs did a great job ensuring that each weapon has it's uses, you can't ignore any of them. In fact, the ammo limit hurts here, because often you're forced to use less-than-ideal weapons simply because they're the only ones with ammo.

I loved 2016 and having finished Eternal, the gameplay isn't the only issue I have with it :

Invisible walls everywhere. The levels read horribly in that regard and the level design is as limiting as the gameplay.
2016 got flanderized in Eternal. The story is a joke. The tone is one big fourth-wall break. 2016's story was far, far more powerful and its tone very successfully skirting the line between meta-commentary and subtle. VEGA being saved, the tension with Hayden, the absolute, rorschach-level slaughter of demons, all of it was amazing. Eternal feels like that cook that doesn't get that seasoning is all about restraint and having just the right amount and instead emptying jugfuls of salt and pepper onto it because "people liked it last time". They took the fun quip about "mortally challenged" and hammered it over and over, as if the writer was going "Hey, that was funny last time, right? Right?"
Two third of the levels don't sell anything about the world, they make you feel nothing. The only ones that did anything were the ones in that elder-maykr-sentinel ancient thing-setting that only managed to be beautiful. Levels exist to be traversed in Eternal whereas in 2016 they elicited both story and a sense of place despite the comparatively much-more limiting Mars UAC setting.

And of course, the gameplay. I want to run and shot at stuff, and I balk at the defense of the new mechanics as "skill". Quake 3 didn't require a chainsaw to reload.

Doom Eternal is a game that struggles between genres. The simple concept of "point cross-hair at enemy and press the button" had to be altered until it became malformed. Why the hell do developers always stray away from the original design? Why do they always have to add more unnecessary stuff? In short, levels have become more linear, and riddled with platform sections, but weapons and enemies are now more varied, to the point that you cannot simply just blow **** up. you must either wait for them to attack, blow their shield down with a specific weapon, punch their armor, etc. And thanks to all the wonderful gamers out there, Doom now has a story. Who in their right mind would want story and lore in Doom? All in all, this game just doesn't feel fun. It's a modern day AAA game with all the trappings of its dumb competitors, masquerading as an "old school back to the roots" FPS. There would be more i would want to talk about, like on the higher difficulty where all the enemies gang rape you, cause you always dash in walls and get stuck in some weird geometry, or how most enemies have a special attack that if you get close to them they bash your head instantly making armor collecting from them almost impossible during harder fights. Or the repetitive level design (narrow corridor that leads to a crappy arena then jumping on platforms then back to narrow corridors), in which the only themes are "apocalyptic city" and "ancient castle", and a few laboratory areas like in Doom 2016. That's it. No variety whatsoever. In short, ONLY buy this game on a sale.

Battlemode is fun the only this is that it is usually laggy and i would have liked to have seen team deathmatch. I can see where people are coming from about the story but its not that bad if you follow along and if u dont want to you can ignore it pretty easily. So yea would give ten aside from laggy battlemode, no team deathmatch or other modes and sometimes frustrating areas between combat encounters eg tentacles and swimming stuff. *weapons are all spectacular and have weight to them. Customization is also deep with each weapon having 2 Unlocks each AND a mastery for both. *The hub (fortress of doom) is amazing.
*difficulty if you want it (played on nightmare and ultra violence and got a REAL challenge) *unlocks are fun finding LPs and toys! *Upgrades work well and are all useful *Controls are tight and responsive even on console and have the general settings you expect in a game. Really good considering the amount of jumping and dashing you do in the game. *Mick Gordon does an OUTSTANDING job on the soundtrack but no track in the game ever comes close to BFGDIVISION in the precious game. "The only thing they fear is you" is the closest it gets.
*that being said the soundtrack is still superb and does a great job keeping you PUMPED and on your toes although out the game.

Only thing holding it from a 10 is lack of snap map and variety of multiplayer modes which were appearent in doom 2016 but not now? Still with 2 other friends to play the custom game battle mode will definitely keep me entertained for a little and campaign replay ability is definitely there. I wanted to give it a 8/10 but the campaign just makes you feel like such a power house it’s like doom guy is constantly saying **** you” to everyone in his way and it is amazing, the final boss & graphical representation lifts it up to a 9/10. I thought this game was gonna be good, but I didn't expect it to be THIS good.

    1) Combat

The developers have stated again and again in interviews that they want this game to elicit similar strategies to a game of chess. Each enemy type having specific strengths and weaknesses. And I must say: they succeeded. This idea came through beautifully in the finished product!

And it wasn't just the enemies. The Slayer's moveset had some more strategy put in as well! Most notable is the lack of ammo in your reserves. You have very little ammo in this game and you're constantly running out. However, this actually comes off as a plus. Why? Because it gives you the opportunity to unleash your chainsaw on the closest demon fodder! What's more, is that your chainsaw fuel constantly recharges on it's own (and rather quickly too) so you'll never be without ammo if you play your cards right.

    2) Style Change

There's been a slight, but very noticeable, style shift from the last Doom game. Its surprisingly silly and cartoony, and I'm kinda into it. A lot more Demon punching slapstick. Plus, the ammo/health pickups greatly resemble the original, magical, floating Doom pickups, giving it a more cartoony/fantasy vibe. A bit of an adjustment from Doom (2016), but all in the service of making the game more arcade fun.

And a bit of a side note: Eternal is a whole lot more colorful, and I totally dig it.

    3) Exploration / Level Pacing

In Doom (2016), my biggest problem with the game was that the levels were a slog to get through. This was mostly caused by the fact that I was constantly switching between a combat mindset and an exploration mindset. I'd complete a combat encounter, then explore the area for collectables. This slowed the game down to a crawl.

In Eternal, this isn't a problem. I can safely skip all the collectables in a level and focus on the combat. Why? Because of the simple addition of fast travel; unlocked near the end of each level. Once I reach the end of a level, I can fast travel back to key sections and find everything I need to make my inner collector happy!

And if you don't care about searching the level for weapon upgrades, you can skip exploration entirely! You're awarded these through combat challenges as well. So don't worry if you're not into playing hide n' seek with collectables.

    4) Story

Probably the most divisive part of the game are the prominince of the story and cutscenes. Not to worry! If you're not into that, they aren't essential to you're enjoyment, and they're completely skippable. (Except for the opening 30 seconds, but it's not story based or anything like that.)

Of course, if you're like me, you will be very interested to see where the story goes. There's a whole lotta story beats involving the Slayer's past that I think y'all will like. I certainly did. Anyways, its kept rather vague, so if you want to know everything, better bust out those Codex entries.

However, if you're not interested at all in the story there are still some Codex entries you might get a kick out of! Take a look at "History of the Sentinals - Part IX" (Last 2 Paragraphs), "History of the Sentinals - Part XIV" (All of It), and "Super Shotgun" (Last Paragraph). All of those are pretty badass.

    5) Summary

The only thing keeping it from a 10/10 are some minor nitpicks. This game is amazing and I highly recommend it.

Alright I really feel the need to address the whole “Hate” thing going on with DOOM Eternal. Now these hate reviews aren’t that common, nor do they contain any constructive criticism from what I’ve seen. No, they’re balls of frustration conveyed with words from what seems like inexperienced DOOM players who want the copy of the same game from 2016. Hell, even some players complain about it’s Multiplayer mode, wanting it to be more emphasized on. I can’t tell you how many reviews I’ve seen straining their necks to point out that DOOM Eternal is “bad” because it doesn’t have a Deathmatch mode. What’s even better are reviews who complain about resource management, yes it does bring in some criticism that I can agree with but most of it is just spitfire about how the ammo capacity is too low and hard to maintain. Or even the small amounts of platforming in the game which isn’t hard AT ALL, it’s there for “pacing” it doesn’t feel like Mario and it doesn’t take up more than 15% of the game- Actually I’ll tell you, I found the most inaccurate and hilarious reviews to be from people who haven’t even gotten through half the game. 90mins for these people seems like the cut-off, like it’s enough time to give a final verdict on a game. Now yes, the game doesn’t have the best first impression. I will agree with that. Though for how many haters who give a review on this game with such little experience is just astounding.
Resource Management - Yes, Eternal is different in this aspect, it’s not hard at all to maintain though. The game has a thing called a Chainsaw, you use it on fodder demons to get tons of ammo. One fuel pip recharges after every 10-15 seconds. Unless you can’t aim, a 10sec cooldown for another flood of ammo shouldn’t be an issue. Fodder demons spawn infinitely until an area is finished off as well, so you really don’t run out of ammo unless you’re not using the Chainsaw properly. There are a few dry parts in some hallways that don’t have fodder and just heavies but you have two grenade types up to that point, a flamethrower mounted on your shoulder and something called a BloodPunch that knocks about 50 HP off of any Demon. So you’re not really defenseless.
Art Direction and Style - Ok I’ll 100% agree that the Revenant looks awful in Eternal. Though the other designs really don’t convey the word “Cartoonish” or “Ugly” to me. I mean it’s supposed to feel like an Adult Saturday morning Cartoon anyways. That’s what game director Hugo Martin wanted and most people are onboard. If you don’t like that idea, well that just shows you don’t do your homework before you buy a game. Yes, the grounded style for pickups in 2016 would have worked well in Eternal. Going from picking up a gun off of a mutilated corpse feels like it’s part of the environment rather than picking up a floating neon-colored one instead. So yes, the style is a little overboard but the graphics have improved immensely. First Impression - So where people only play a few hours and then make their review, I can see partly why, but the other half of me questions their logic on how it makes sense to review a game you’ve barely dipped your toe into. DOOM Eternal doesn’t have the best first impression, that is very true. The learning curve is way bigger than 2016’s. Though around level five, the game really starts to take off, really giving you the action and blood and gore you so desired. Oh and good news to anyone who hates that purple sludge, level five is the last level you’ll ever see it. So I encourage anyone sort of off-put by the game’s first impressions to keep playing.
I could keep countering every complaint thrown at this game, do you know why? No it’s not because I love the game (But yes, I do immensely enjoy it), no it’s because every complaint is some type of nitpick or feature or mechanic that doesn’t mix in well with their playstyle, and also because I’m running out of room. Y’know maybe just learn the game? Better yet, maybe give GOOD criticism because from what I’ve seen, any stars below 3, or a score below a 70, are just full of complaints. Please stop, stop giving bad reviews to a game if you yourself can’t even give reasonable/constructive criticism. It’s hard to perfect perfection, and to anyone who’s truly played Eternal, they’ll get that reference. DOOM Eternal improves upon the gameplay in every way along with the music, the level design, the graphics, the AI and the Movement. Yes, the storytelling is meh and the 3rd person cutscenes feel modernized in a bad way, the Revenant looks awful and it doesn’t have the same level of grit that 2016 had. Though compared to the pros, these complaints that do in fact come from “Users” of Eternal, seem like minor inconveniences and that’s exactly what they are, simple nitpicks. Buy the game, it’s the most DOOM that DOOM has ever been.

    - Enemies now have weaknesses that needs to be exploited as ammo is very sparse. This quickly becomes repetitive as best illustrated with the caca demon (The flying ball with a mouth and an eye), where you have to throw a grenade into its mouth and perform a glory kill. Every time.
    - Graphics are much improved but the overall setting feels much more cartoony with the way pickups stand out in the landscape.
    - There are now monkey bars and wall climbing.
    - Combat is constantly interrupted by cut-scenes. E.g. when you kill a set of enemies you would see a cutscene of a door unlock. I was surprised on how much this actually breaks the flow of the game.
    - It feels far less polished than the prior entry.

By all means it's a decent game, but if you came here expecting a followup to Doom 2016, you will be disappointed. I would recommend picking this up once it goes on sale.

So, I've seen negative reviews talking about low ammo and jumping around, but these people are clearly one of two things :
    1) not using every weapon, they stick to the shotgun or something else, and complain that they have to chainsaw a fodder every 20sec
    2) they are just not using the chainsaw, maybe because you could play doom 2016 with barely using it, or just because they didn't

    1) not using every weapon, they stick to the shotgun or something else, and complain that they have to chainsaw a fodder every 20sec
    2) they are just not using the chainsaw, maybe because you could play doom 2016 with barely using it, or just because they didn't realize it refills itself.
Low ammo forces you to master each weapon, get upgrades for each of them, it forces you to not get bored.
Then, people complain about platforming when it's here to me the parts where you're not fighting a bit more fun, instead of a series of corridors until the next area, it's a jump pad to a swing rope with some zombie in the end you can kill for fun. It's great to keep players engaged and make them use their brains, just like ammo capacity.
I've also seen some complains about the story, to me it's a plus, it's great having world building and lore to have reasons to kill demons, it's not much, since doom isn't a story based game, but it's not too much, if you think there are too many cinematics, just hold R to skip anything.
I'm happy I could play this game day one, yes you have to sign up to bethesda.net but who cares, make an account while downloading the game, you can even lnk it to steam and you won't even notice the Bethesda login, I didn't notice it until I saw butthurt reviews only on the trivial account creation that take as much time to do as leaving a 0 review complaining about it.
Overall the gameplay is fun and an improvement to 2016, devs put lots of love in the game and you can feel it.

Its previous game, Doom 2016, was amazing but you could enter a fight with the super shotgun and never need to change weapon however in this game you need to utilise all guns to survive. Every battle is unique and memorable. Some enemies are annoying to fight like the whiplash and the maruder but over time you learn to get past them. There is fair amount of platforming areas which stops the game from being a perfect 10/10 but the overall game is amazing. Doom eternal is been a difficult game to learn but rewarding to master. Even the story is incredible, something which the other doom game lacks. A Masterpiece of a first person shooter, the best I have ever played Expand

While no game is perfect, Doom Eternal is very close to that. What I think a lot of people who have had a negative experience with this game either don't understand or have forgotten that this is a doom game. Every doom game has been about mindless killing of demons, platforming, and a story that doesn't get too deep. Doom Eternal takes these 3, and turns them up x100.

Every new demon you face offers a challenging experience, each one becoming harder than the last. However, the game itself seems to stay on a steady difficulty. The more you progress throughout the levels and find things to upgrade your suit, weapons, or abilities, the less challenging those demons that used to be an issue become. The game also offers "weak points" for each demon, giving players a constant changing load out and a more strategic means of slaying. This is a necessary element, as now your shotgun can hold up to a max of 24 shells, rather than 60. *cough *cough

Every level is different from the last, and is extremely colorful; each giving off its own unique vibe and personality. Along with cool environments, the game feels much bigger while you travel from different worlds, as i feel almost every doom prior was limited to the close quarters environments.

The story is there, and for those that want more lore, there is plenty of it, by collecting "codex" through out each level, will inform you on events mentioned though your journey.

When it comes to collectables, the game offers a ton both inside and outside the levels. What I mean by this, is that through out the game play, you'll be able to unlock things like custom backgrounds for the main menu, different skins, etc. that can be unlocked by just playing the game normally, or completing certain milestones that reward upon completion. One thing I thought was very cool that some people seem to have a meltdown over is the requirement for a Bethesda.net account. What people don't understand is that if you have any other doom game that allows you to link your account, you will be granted a free exclusive skin/reward to add to your collection. In addition, you'll be able to unlock a zombie doom slayer skin by joining the Doomslayers club. Both accounts are free and take a total of 3 minutes to make ._. so stop complaining.

I love this game, but with all this I do have to address some issues that i felt need to be fixed or looked more into. I feel that the difficulty dose not match the game play experience tied to it. I found myself dying too often and loosing my extra lives in "Hurt me plenty" an issue that I didn't have in any other doom. I also feel that some of the levels are slightly broken, either taking too long to load the next checkpoint after everything is dead or not loading in at all. Some of the milestones have glitched for me and others as well, however i have been lucky compared to some. another major issue i feel, is how often the Marauder spams his shield. Your only means of effectively killing him is either by splash damage, or waiting for him to drop his shield for .00005 sec.

If you have made it this far, thank you for reading my review of Doom Eternal, and I hope you found this helpful!

Doom Eternal gameplay is phenomenal and there is nothing i can play right now that satisfies the same urges this game manages to scratch at the same level of quality . It is very unfortunate that some people dislike platforming and puzzles, but they are impeccably designed. Gameplay flow is streets ahead of DOOM'16 (which was the best shooter until now). This game takes you by the neck and throws you into the thick of it. For those who've missed DOOM'16 things might prove difficult to adjust to, but judging by what i've seen people mention even experienced players have trouble adjusting to the new game. It's a shame because they fixed problems i never thought existed in the original. Doom Eternal has the best pacing despite having extremely long levels that usually take me up to 2 hours to complete. Yet the exploration pillar is so tight i never missed a single collectible (except for the empyrean keys, that i usually rerun levels for). And yes i've been replaying levels many times because they are that good and practicing this game feels very rewarding. Things i can do now, that i never dreamed of doing before..and on the controller!

I can go on at length about everything they did right, but you've probably gathered that i love the game already. The only thing i have problems with are the arena ending cutscenes. I dislike cutscenes in general, expecially in FPS games that break out of First Person. Most of them in Doom Eternal are very short and to the point, some are even hilarious, and the longest are still in First Person so it's fine. But in some arenas there are cutscenes that show you that the door opens. This feels like a design mistake to me as i often experienced it in the middle of jumping or doing something meaningful and it's a bad feeling of losing control over your character.

Other than that it is the best FPS ever, probably the best game of the year and most importantly the most badass game of the decades. Please ignore the haters who think that this game deserves a 0 or a 1 - they are blinded by misguided hatred that they themselves irrationally fueled. Review bombers should burn in hell, because Doom Slayer is coming for them to Rip & Tear!

*I love this game, these are two nitpicks*
The only complaint I have for this game is that guns are pickups, unlike Doom 2016 and that there's some 3 second cutscenes here and there that kind of interrupt the flow but it really doesn't matter.

I see a lot of people here that haven't played the whole game, yet still leave a review which if I find really **** retartded.

But now for the nitty gritty. This is meets my already high expectations from 2016 and then some.

Gameplay- lets just get it out of the way. Gameplay is magnificent. And it’s the main thing you’re here for. If you played 2016 you’ve got the basic building blocks for here. Now on top of the existing glory kills for health, we have the flame belcher for armor, and the chainsaw is still for ammo, except now it recharges and as such is more vital for the gameplay loop, which throws a lot of people off early game, the ammo caps are lower across the board and when you aren’t used to the new chainsaw, it’s hard to get used to. Simply, you have to git gud. That’s about it. Enemies are FAR more aggressive, you can’t just kinda run a big circle around the arenas and kill enemies as they come, big guys will hunker down and wait for you to come to them, and a certain late game mirror match enemy is built to pull you into his pacing rather then your own. That’s a controversial choice but I like it. My main issue is that some weapon mods come across pointless. The full auto shotgun seems great but with the new lower ammo cap it’s hard to feel safe using it, but maybe I’ll feel better with more time in it. Funnily enough the heavy machine gun’s mods flipped for me. I use the scope way more now than the micro missiles, due to a new mechanic I’ll detail in a moment. There’s also the new super weapon I won’t name, but it’s nice, it uses partial charges of the BFG shots and is more of a machine gun. It’s very interesting. On top of that is the crucible. That’s less of a spoiler, it’s all over the marketing. It’s three charges to instantly kill any enemy that isn’t resistant to super weapons. So specific mini boss enemies and bosses. It’s fun, though you get it just a bit too late for my taste. Also since the ammo is based on placed pickups it’s hard to justify using it in a map without them. Same with the bfg. But that’s a relatively minor issue I suppose. And for the new mechanic, any enemy classed as heavy and above has a specific weak point, that can be destroyed to seal off some of it’s attacks. For example, you can destroy the returning Revenant’s shoulder cannons to seal off his ability to fire missiles, making him use his melee attacks I genuinely think you would never see otherwise. (For good reason)
Graphics/performance- the game looks nice, idTech 7 is doing great, it runs like a dream where 2016 on idTech 6 struggles to maintain a consistent frame rate. Aside from some weird graphical artifacts tied to mist effects in one level, I didn’t see graphics mess up any, and I had exactly one crash the entire game and I couldn’t recreate it so it much have just been a fluke.
Story- As John Carmack, co-creator of Doom himself said “story in a game is like story in porn. You expect it to be there, but it’s not that important” and the writers clearly understand that, but left a story here that, if you want to see it, is enjoyable and leaves you wanting more for the confirmed dlc or a sequel that will no doubt come.
But wait there’s more. This game also includes a new pvp mode called Battlemode. It’s one slayer with 90% of his arsenal (no super weapons without special circumstances) vs two demons, picked from the super heavy class, I believe. The Marauder, Pain Elemental, Mancubus, Revenant, and Archvile. Bit of a limited roster, but I think it’s just right, and leaves room for the mode to expand it. Demons play more or less like the 2016 MP demon summons did, except now they have four skills to use, either buffs/debuffs or summoning smaller demons, such as hell knights, prowlers etc. One side wins by killing the other, and the demon players respawn so slayer has to kill two demons at once. Winner is first to 3 wins, if it gets to the last two of five rounds the game opens up a second tier of upgrades to choose one of, things like summoning a baron of hell for the demons or giving the slayer the BFG. It’s loads of fun if you get a genuinely balanced matchup of similar skill levels, but is just a slog if you end up totally outmatched, like any pvp game. Overall, it’s a nice side mode, but I hope that unlike 2016 it’s not the focus, the single player should be. But don’t ignore battlemode, it’s fun and deserves new content as well.
Ultimately, this is a strong candidate for the arbitrary game of the year award, and I hope it grows even more over the rest of the year with the promised dlc

Doom eternal tries to keep it fresh by introducing mechanics for refilling your ammo, armor and health by doing various different types of kills. To me, that mostly hurts the game. I dont know how many times I ran up to a monster to try to chainsaw him just to be out of chainsaw fuel. Or to punch an enemy that stopped blinking the second I got there. It hurts the flow of the game.

The game also heavily relies on platforming, its not some small optional thing. You will need to platform all the time. Platforming works very poorly in first person games, which is why it is usually very rare and only used as a spice in some games successfully. Here, it is everywhere.

The game also very quickly gets repetitive, which would be fine if the game mechanics were excellent but the constant confusion of juggling different styles of killing an enemy to get what you need is just annoying. It ends up feeling like a chore instead of awesome.

I miss the times of games like Doom 3, which was more horror-oriented and used pacing to tell a story mixed with some great shoot outs. I sure wish the ID team could go back to making one like that instead. This is just not that great, in my opinion.

Grabbing onto a wall then dashing over to the monkey bars to find a secret is very satisfying, and the improved movement leads to more creative battles and platforming segments. Some might be turned off by the platforming, but for me, it’s a great improvement and helps with the pacing a ton. The combat is fast, visceral, and challenging. The addition of the chainsaw charging for ammo drops was great because it encourages an even faster pace. A genius gameplay loop has been created within this game: chainsaw for ammo, fire belch for armor, and glory kill for health. This is fantastic because the game encourages you to use your movement to traverse the battle arenas looking for fodder to increase one of your dwindling supplies.

Overall/TL;DR DOOM: Eternal is quite the masterpiece in terms of FPS campaigns. Pacing is excellent, platforming is excellent, combat is the best Id has crafted, and the secrets less tedious than DOOM (2016). I would rate this game a high 9.

This one is different and adds to the formula with extensive tactics. Every arena, every enemy requires certain weapons, skills & kill-shortcuts. All executed in the right sequence while constantly moving and jumping in the right patterns. Plus: placing glory kills and chainsaw-fatalities to refill life and ammo. And despite all that complexity it is even faster than its predecessor.

Doom eternal can be frustrating at times and has a steep learning curve. But those who are willing to learn and master its demanding mechanics will experience a demon-slaying-flow intense and rewarding like no other FPS-experience before. And finally feel like the fcking DOOM-guy himself.

Hard to learn and hard to master it is. But also hard to resist. A full 10 for me.

I wanted to love this game I really did. Doom 2016 was one of the best first person shooters I've ever played and sits alongside the original Doom and Quake, so I was expecting big things for Doom Eternal. However what was delivered is honestly a mixed bag. (I played Doom Eternal on Ultra Violence)

    The positives:
-At times some of the most intense, fast paced FPS action delivered in years.
-Amazing visuals, level design, great sound design.
-Some great homages to the original Doom games.
    -Glory kills.

    The negatives:
-The MARAUDERS. Easily the most frustrating and game breaking enemy I've ever had the displeasure of battling in a game. When you encounter one as a boss you think that's it but these guys later show up as regular enemies in the game. I have beaten Doom 2016 on Nightmare, Metro Exodus on Ranger Hardcore, Devil May Cry on Dante Must Die mode and none compare to the sheer frustration of encountering a Marauder on Doom Eternal. A Marauder makes almost every weapon in your arsenal almost useless and he can block a BFG blast. That's right. A NORMAL non-Boss enemy in a Doom game making the mother of all guns the BFG useless. Expect to die at least 10 times plus whenever one of these Marauders shows up. Expect to have your progress halted and the entire fast paced, fluid flow of Doom Slayer chaos reduced to a stall. The demons are supposed to fear the Doom Slayer yet I honestly end up fearing the Marauder for the frustration he is about to bring upon my game. That's NOT what Doom is supposed to be about. I replayed Doom 2016 several times, sadly I will not be replaying Doom Eternal, mainly because of these game breaking Marauders. Whoever thought the Marauder was a good idea was wrong. Easily the WORST enemy in a Doom game period. Fine for a boss, terrible for a regular enemy.

-Platforming. Is this an Doom game or a Crash Bandicoot game? At times it feels more like the latter with multiple platforming sections which again slow the game to a stall, become frustrating and involve no demon killing. I want to shoot demons not swing on poles and climb walls. I wanted a First Person Shooter not a platformer. Some mild platforming is fine but Doom Eternal has too much.

In conclusion: A mixed bag. At times Doom Eternal feels like the best of Doom and Quake 3 mashed together which is simply amazing yet it is too punctuated with enthusiasm killing enemies (MARAUDER) and platforming sections for Doom Eternal to rise to the top and reach first person shooter nirvana. Don't believe all the paid critic hype. Play for yourself and see.

I can imagine this being a great game if you are a big fan of almost constant combat in games. They improved the production values, increased the scope of the game, inserted more of a plot/characters, and kept the same intense gameplay. For me, I enjoyed the puzzley platforming and finding the secrets; they were challenging. What I just cant stand though is the relentless combat which to me is a chore to play through since you are constantly fighting the same enemies over and over again. This is especially tiring given that the levels this time around are humongous and take around 2 hrs to beat sometimes. Its just too much repetitive fighting for me that ultimately killed the enjoyment of this game for me. I got to level 6 before I just could not take it anymore. I enjoyed the original Doom games because the levels weren't that long and there was a better balance of exploration, enviromental puzzle solving/platforming, and combat in those games. The combat wasn't the main focus. So, if you love combat in games and are a fan of God of War or Halo, you'll probably love this game since it seems like an infusion of both. Wasn't for me though since I'm more into the less frequent combat, exploration, environmental puzzles, and secrets of the classic games. Expand

Do you want to go through the same challenges to get the same weapon upgrades for the same weapons as Doom 2016? Do you want to have sudden, and unexplained plot developments that just ‘happen’ because they need it to to have an excuse to move the story on?

Do you want to lose everything that made Doom 2016 amazing and keep everything bad about it, with some awful high speed additions? WELCOME to Doom Eternal, where you can do all of these. Eternal is one of the biggest letdowns I’ve ever had, and I played Fallout 76....

Glory kills are lame as can be and have no real ‘glory’ about them they’re literally just easy ways of getting ammo which is like gold dust, you’re CONSTANTLY running out. And I mean constantly. The super shotgun when fully loaded with fully upgraded ammo capacity holds 22 shells, the super shotgun fires two at once so actually you only have 11 shots. 11 shots on the most iconic gun in the game.....
I cannot explain with just words and no video how lazy the designers have been with creating new glory kills and new equipment. The ‘flame belch’ which is about 1.5 seconds of fire with a 5 foot range is one of the most over-sold lame weapons I have ever seen. The grenades are now in the form of pointless frost Grenade, and moderately useful frag. Both of which aren’t thrown anymore just fired from a shoulder mounted cannon, all to make sure your hands are free to not-fire your guns because they’re all out of ammo.

All of the weapon upgrades are identical to Doom 2016, and have had no upgrades, updates or additional abilities. The challenges to get them are exactly the same. The ‘boss’ fights are again insanely dull, the ‘Gladiator’ boss? Seriously? You have the entire scope of demonic hellish creatures and you make a dull and lazy version of a character that’s been done in numerous other franchises? The ‘puzzles’ of movement and getting around aren’t as irritating as some are saying, but they’re not puzzles that require thinking and skill and trial and error, they’re puzzles that literally just take you trying and trying and trying to time the double jump or the boost. It truly is ironic that a game about hellish creatures, should itself be an absolutely hellish experience. I kept on playing and playing HOPING that maybe it will progress, maybe I’ll get new abilities and new guns, and maybe next level it’ll change, maybe next level and then it was the last level and it was over. What a letdown. Why they needed extra time to release this I am sure I do not know. It doesn’t take 6 months to press copy and paste. Doom Eternal is everything bad about Doom 2016 and nothing good. It’s guilty of an even bigger crime however. Doom Eternal, is just plain lazy.

Time to bust out the super shotgun, meat hook to something and blast its face, dash away before they retaliate, run off to glory kill something and dash across the map to create some distance to take out that mancubus. All the while the music is pounding the beat of the action into you. Our one true lord and savior, Mick Gordon, has done it again. Platforming and exploration sections give a much needed breather between arenas that will have you sweating and jaw clenching. Cut scenes provide a sense of just how badass the Doom Slayer is, oh and a little bit of story. DOOM Eternal takes the combat system from DOOM 2016 and injects pure adrenaline into it. This game punishes mistakes, and rewards smart choices. I have never had this much fun playing a shooter. This is the best single-player shooter I've ever played. As far as multiplayer goes, i haven't had a chance to delve into it myself, but it seems interesting, but lets not lie to ourselves - we're here for one thing, committing genocide on the mortally challenged while head banging to some sick tunes. Other than that Doom Eternal disappointed me big time. This game could qualify as a platform game like Mario. I understand that there was going to be platforming in this game but not as much as this. The mechanics are also ass, I have ‘missed’ a ledge or monkey bar not because I wasn’t close, because the game just didn’t work. I died about 30 times trying to activate that 3rd ring right before the Khan boss fight. Why in a game that is known for ripping and tearing do I have to constantly platform idk why. To add to that, mostly every encounter is based on platforming as well. The battle areas are small and you HAVE to use the monkey bars , jump pads, and portals to move around. I tried to just play in the ground and I just get mauled. I personally hate games that require a bunch of maneuvering like that. The main reason I fell in love with doom 2016 was because the ground gameplay was so smooth and well rounded that I was able to perfect it and move onto more harder difficulties. Back to the battle arenas, the khan mayker battle is so stupid. The arena is so small that you have to make an actual effort not to fall off. Also I mentioned earlier the mechanics were buggy, well during this fight you have to use the meat hook on the Khan and as you close in you have to blood punch her. 5/10 my punched acted Like I punched the wall and not an enemy, I was furious. I’m facing the icon of sin rn and if I’m being honest I’m not gonna finish it cause it’s the same bull crap. Small map that constantly makes you move. The game forces you too move around way to much taking away from what makes the game fun and different, rip and tearing demons apart. Just regular encounters you have to constantly be moving around using the whole environment, and it’s too much movement. Half time I’m trying to avoid being hit I walk onto a jump pad that launches me half way across the map. Very few times can you just go toe to toe with the demons and your guns without having the annoyance of platforming. I was so excited for this game but now it’s just a disappointment. If I can take the gameplay of 2016 and mix it with the demons and guns in eternal, I would cause to me that’s a perfect game. Not saying it’s a bad game but not the game I was expecting. If you Arnet a big fan of platform games, than don’t waste your money. Expand

There’s a cliché phrase that gets repeated to death often: “you can’t beat the classics.” I find this quite to be not only overused, but just plain tedious, and I tend to flip it around by saying, “can’t beat the classics, so let’s make new ones.” id Software seems to really understand that: their ever-popular “DOOM” franchise is one of gaming’s classics, and is one of the most iconic andThere’s a cliché phrase that gets repeated to death often: “you can’t beat the classics.” I find this quite to be not only overused, but just plain tedious, and I tend to flip it around by saying, “can’t beat the classics, so let’s make new ones.” id Software seems to really understand that: their ever-popular “DOOM” franchise is one of gaming’s classics, and is one of the most iconic and well-known franchises in the history of gaming. While I recently went back to play the first two “DOOM” games and felt that they showed a bit of their age, both are still very enjoyable and I can totally understand why “DOOM” is considered a classic. In 2016, id Software decided to revitalize the series with their “DOOM” reboot, which was a massive hit: I would even go as far as to call 2016’s “DOOM” one of the best shooters in recent memory, and easily one of the best FPS titles of this generation. So, when “DOOM Eternal” was announced, my hype was through the roof: sure, Bethesda has been on a bit of a cold-streak with games like “Fallout 76,” “Rage 2” and “Wolfenstein: Youngblood” receiving reviews that ranged from mixed to extremely negative, but a part of me had a feeling that “DOOM Eternal” would be the shot in the arm Bethesda needed. And sure enough, it is: dare I say, for as much as I just praised the last “DOOM” game, “DOOM Eternal” actually stands even taller and not only lives up to the last entry, but even surpasses it (no easy task indeed).
“DOOM Eternal” retains a lot of what made 2016’s “DOOM” work so well: it’s extremely faithful to the legacy of the “DOOM” franchise, yet still featuring plenty to entice gamers that may have never experienced the classic “DOOM” games. I also appreciate a lot of the game’s references to “DOOM II,” with the return of a number of enemies and gameplay ideas that propped up in that game, making this almost feel like a “DOOM II” for a new generation. That said, while “DOOM II” to me felt a bit like “DOOM More” compared to the first “DOOM,” “DOOM Eternal” doesn’t feel like that: the game makes several great changes and adds a number of new things to the gameplay that help it feel even better than the last one. The gameplay is even faster than before, the gunplay remains as smooth as ever, with a lot of weapons receiving fantastic upgrades that make them even more fun to use, there are several new weapons that are extremely fun to use, and the level design is even tighter than before. 2016’s “DOOM” already had some great level design to it, but I feel like “DOOM Eternal” comes through with some even more varied levels and areas, and they’re a pleasure to explore. The game also relies on platforming quite a bit, something the original “DOOM II” also did, but here, I think the platforming is smooth and controls well, and it feels more layered than “DOOM” games of the past. Visually, the game is still an absolute stunner, with some of the best graphics out there today, the soundtrack is still a blast, the combat is even more tense than before, and there’s a nice added challenge to the game, even if you play it on the lower difficulties like I did. The campaign is also a rip-roaring good time that feels even beefier than before, and getting to play as the demons themselves is a fantastic concept that’s executed very well.
I honestly can’t think of too many problems I had with the game. I know some critics have felt that some of the additions to the arsenal felt a bit overwhelming to manage, but to me, I totally enjoyed that, and I think a lot of the new additions, like the flamethrower, rechargeable chainsaw, dash button, and climbing ability, just motivated me even more to want to learn the game. In terms of other flaws…maybe the excitement that the game provides might make you headbang so hard that you get overly-excited and give yourself a nosebleed? Yeah, that’s the best I’ve got.
All in all, “DOOM Eternal” rises above its already-fantastic predecessor and continues to establish why the new “DOOM” games belong in a first-person shooter masterclass. “DOOM Eternal” pushes the series forward in meaningful ways, and honestly might even stand tall as the best entry in the franchise (I still have a few “DOOM” games to play, so talk to me about that later, but as of right now, “DOOM Eternal” is my favorite). Definitely give this game a shot, it’s well worth your time. With how much Bethesda has slumped as of late, leave it to id Software to pick up the pieces of their struggles and make something that’ll hopefully breathe some new life into the company. Whether or not they improve as a result is yet to be seen, but at least we can safely say “DOOM Eternal” will definitely be one of this year’s best games, and one of the best shooters of this generation of gaming.

story: the story is very vague in this game this time but in short the slayer has a ship and can teleport anywhere to reap and tear demons while learning some things about his past

    pros:
the amount of details from the minor things like demon face expression to their skin and bones breaking and tearing after you shoot them is just astonishing and don't let me get started on the things that are going on in the back round of the map that's just a new level of detail

game play is flawless and so enjoyable i cant get enough of chainsawing demons shooting missiles at them and tearing their heads off

most of the glory kills are just amazing and grotesque

the map is super easy to understand and really easy to use

every map looks really unique and has a ton of secrets for you to find

every demon design is superb and amazing

the game runs smooth even on console which is really hard to manage

THE MUSIC IS ON ANOTHER LEVEL mick gordon made such an excellent job with the music i can easily say best video game music of 2020

    cons:
i really didn't like the new approach they did with the game by basically making it more arcadeish unlike the 2016 version it kinda bugged me because it felt like i'm playing unreal tournament sometimes

the whole interface design and color they did looks really ugly

the gun design in my opinion isn't that good compared to the 2016 version even the unmakyer the new ultra gun they added looks really boring compared to how it looked in the original doom game

and about the glory kills yes i said that most of them are amazing but that's most of them the other bigger half is you cutting them up with a blade which is kinda lazy in my opinion because i would prefer the slayer just killing them with his hands and by doing that the glory kills become unique to each demon and not just cutting them in half and that's it

in conclusion the game is such a blast to play with new demons and crazy metal music even if there are some cons here and there this game does deserve high praise because even now after i finished it i cant stop playing because of the enjoyable gun play which leads me to my final score my score to doom eternal is a 8.5 out of 10 i really think that you as a player should buy this awesome game
