The possibilities are infinite and the story is well done with no plot holes, the graphics are outstanding and the console doesn't even start like a jet, some scene gets me crying like a baby at the end, the artists who made this are unbelievable, this is the best quantic dream title hands down. I've loved every part of the game.

Developer Quantic Dream delivers catharsis for anyone who has ever felt unloved or neglected because they are different, and hopefully gave an active experience to those who have never been in that kind of situation. That puts the game above and beyond anything else released in years.

The photo-realistic graphics and incredible voice/motion performances from experienced actors greatly contribute to the presentation as well, surpassing or matching recent games such as God of War in those departments. Jesse Williams, Valorie Curry and Bryan Dechart played their roles perfectly, breathing life into these robotic characters.

Others often criticize Quantic Dream games for their plots and gameplay. I will say that the writing in Detroit is much better than Heavy Rain's, but the gameplay in this one takes a backseat to Heavy Rain. With that said, the relentless criticism of Quantic Dreams' game plots and gameplay is dismissive of how far ahead they are from other developers in many other aspects. People should know by now that Quantic Dream is not in the business of making traditional games.

I'd much rather play an interactive movie that makes a statement than a game that wows me with tight gameplay and good characters but doesn't say anything.

I'm currently obsessed with this game. The graphics are beautiful, the music is amazing, the characters are diverse and interesting, and it seems like all the choices really do matter unlike some choice based games. There's plenty of moments that are either heartwarming, intsense, angsty, or a mix of those three. Love this game to bits!

I completed the game twice and there are still so many other ways to go, I can‘t wait to play all the possible scenes (even though I got pretty good endings already, so it might hurt to see how the rest turns out). Connor and Hank are my absolute favorite characters, their friendship is so precious to me Expand

Truly, out of all of his works so far, this is David Cage's most ambitious and well-done project. Most of the hate for Detroit: Become Human is generally founded on a "lack of gameplay or replayability", but David Cage's games are purely narrative. Detroit has several endings, which severely increases replayability. While I could continuously refute claims, let me go with the actual flaws that keep the game from being perfect.

    - Odd locomotion
Sometimes, your character will deem it necessary to spin around like a Beyblade when you try to go through a small space.

    - Choices
While most of the time your choices matter, there are quite a few inconsequential choices that have almost no bearing on the result of the story. It's just kind of irritating, though to the game's credit, these inconsequential decisions only come into play during filler conversations.

    - Questionable QTEs
Something that I noticed universally, not just from my playthrough but from several let's plays, is that some actions can confuse those that don't play fighting games. I say this unironically, because quanticdream seemed to take advice from BlazBlue and throw in half-circles. Another issue is the motion control tracking. It's relatively iffy at times, and I sometimes ended up nearly dropping the controller because I had to practically throw my body in one direction for the motion to pick up.

These issues are, in my opinion, what turns Detroit from a perfect narrative experience to an amazing narrative experience. If you have a PS4, buy it ASAP. It's well worth the money, in my opinion.

Loving the game, very immersive story. I always feel like the controls are a bit clunky with Quantic Dream games, not as fluid / intuitive as I feel they could be. It's my only complaint though, enjoying the game a lot.

The game is one of the best looking on PS4 and the soundtracks in this game really add to the immersion of the characters you play. I applaud Quantic Dream for their extremely hard work and for them to create this masterpiece of a narrative. There is never a dull moment and you always want more. Two games dominated my year in 2018: Far Cry 5, and Detroit: Become Human. People can dump on David Cage all they want, but- and I say this as someone who's played his games before, I know there are valid criticisms of his writing abilities- he definitely has a winner with this one.

Like I said, having played Quantic Dream Games before, I know how hammy the acting and dialogue can be.

But D:BH really came off as realistic- a hammy line here or there, but it's nothing glaring. The characters are excellent (though I wish the game was longer so they could explore some of them more) and the story was beautiful.

Like Until Dawn, D:BH does a great job at throwing some unexpected consequences into your butterfly-effect choices. Sometimes the consequences to your choices are predictable, and sometimes they're not. Keeps you on edge and really hoping your characters don't end up dead.

Great game. One of my all-time favorites.

Detroit should become the example to be followed by Quantic Dream in their future endevours in this amazing genre! I didn't feel the quick time events as being quick time events, actually feeling the emotions of the scene most of the time instead of just pressing buttons. This is in part because of the bland characters and the kind of formulaic plot this story will follow given the fact that you make the choices that are the game is wanting you to. If you make a "bad" choice the outcome is so obviously awful that you really don't feel like the path you are taking is a whole different story in of itself. This is illustrated by the fact that if you make a "bad" decision the flowchart you follow just becomes less complete. Still, the animation and environments are a technical marvel. I would recommend this to people who like high concept sci-fi movies like the matrix with a descent hero's journey, but this is definitely not the game for me. Expand

It's also the best writing of a Quantic Dream game to date, with a lot less of that awkward 'French to English' overcompensation problem that we saw in previous games. The gameplay is more refined than any previous game in their library too, offering a greater variety of scenarios and types of scenes to interaction with. And these are the strongest lead characters for a QD game as they all have clear goals, motivations, distinct characteristics and memorable moments to make their stories resonate. Major props especially to Connor, who I want to be a real character just to bounce off conversations with! I only had a few minor but not major issues with movement controls now and then, but that's the only thing I had any issues.

A lot of reviews will point out how it is a very familiar civil rights story, but, while they are not exactly wrong, they are ignoring that ultimately execution is what matters in making a good story. We see these stories all the time and usually they're praised for being bold or daring (especially if it's a 'trendy' topic). Yet somehow this game doesn't merit the same praise because of people's backlash to David Cage and because of topics it didn't discuss that are not even relevant to this story (sorry, but race doesn't really matter much to synthetic lifeforms since they are in themselves their own race). I feel it is intellectually dishonest the way some critics have bashed this game as clumsy for not meeting some imaginary bar by those critics. It can only be judged as what it is and what I personally feel is that it is a new benchmark for cinematic driven games that has lingered with me long after I played it.

Throughout the story, you face challenges and choices that will mold what type of android that character becomes. These characters can also live or die by your choices if you choose to play on the experienced difficulty.

When playing Connors story, you get teamed up with Lt. Anderson and have to work together to solve deviant cases. Anderson is not particularly fond of androids and it is up to the player to decide if they want to try to change that or not. Regardless of what you choose, your mission is to find the leader of the deviant androids and take him down. Markus is an android that lived a simple life before it got turned upside down by some unfortunate events. After these events Markus finds a deviant safe haven, Jericho, and decides he will no longer live his life staying quiet. North, Josh, and Simon are androids that Markus enlist to help him with his cause. Working as a team, you four will ultimately decide which path Markus will go down; peace or violence. Kara is an android owned by Todd Williams who tasks Kara with keeping the house clean and watching after his daughter, Alice. Playing as Kara seems straightforward until her conscience awakens and you realize that Alice's living situation is not a safe one. Someone disliking you or you making a choice that ends your characters life are a few examples. These choices enhanced the story experience because you don't know what your choices will have an effect on at that moment and sometimes you get surprised later down the road. These choices are also delivered by some great actors who gave great performances. Most of the time I found myself being moved by the characters words and emotions. That is why I enjoy Detroit: Become Human's story so much.

Some things I did not like were the controls and some of the dialogue responses. There were times when I would find my character getting stuck on the smallest object and have trouble when trying to do small turnarounds. Another control issue was when trying to complete half circles. When trying to do them, they would register sometimes but seemed to have an issue of you tried to do them too fast. Luckily this was not too much of an issue because half circles did not come up during quick time events. Even though the acting is great in this game, there were some times when the dialogue seemed too scripted. A couple of times I can remember are from the beginning of the game. When Connor tells Daniel he is not lying and when Emma denies Daniel's accusation. These dialogue responses were too different from what was going on that it took me out of the moment. Despite these two issues it did not ruin the game for me.

Detroit: Become Human is a great game to play if you are looking for a customizable story with multiple endings and playstyles. Although I did run across some issues, I was able to play through it because they were not too hindering. Overall, I liked the game and will continue playing until I get all flowchart options unlocked. I recommend picking up the game if you are looking for something enjoyable to play or if you are a fan of Quantic Dream games.

Detroit: Become Human is really pretty, especially the effects like the rain and snow on characters are stunning. But under the pretty surface there is extremely little substance in regards to gameplay, and the little that is there often feels contrived and even unnecessary. Personally I don't feel any more immersed by having to swing my controller around in the air, it is just really annoying. The flow chart is a nice touch though where you can compare your decisions to others and see paths you might not have taken and it can be fun to go back to see how you can do things different to unlock new paths etc. Cage should drop all the stupid controller manipulations you have to do, it just looks stupid when you are in a "freezed cutscene" and have to move the analog stick in some strange angle to do something and can pause in the middle of the movement. It serves no purpose other than being annoying. What has always been interesting in these games are the choices you have to make and the branching paths etc. We don't need to sit and shake our controllers in the air to enjoy that.

The biggest problem with the game though for me, despite the really interesting topic of AI and its implications on the future, something I have always been very interested in, the whole story in Detroit feels really bland, predictable, propagandistic and just plain uninteresting, especially the part with Marcus. It is also disapointing that Cage seems to have some vapid SJW tendencies, if you come across any white males in the games you should do good to be on your toes and be careful since they are most likely bad people (like in real life right), but if they are black the be trusted and are friendly. And when you can choose the black power fist as your symbol and chant "I have a dream" in the streets it becomes a bit too much obvious what all this is about.

I never felt like I was on the edge of my seat with suspense, wondering what would happen next. The only sections that felt truly interesting was the sections with Connor (who is also by far the most interesting character in the game) who is the detective type. That really made me realize that this sort of game really fits so much better with a detective/crime setting where you are trying to solve some kind of murder mystery and I really hope the next game from Cage will be more of that where you have to investigate crime scenes, compare evidence and decide on what to do next in the case and what leads to follow and what people to suspect or investigate further. That could be truly interesting.

Honestly, this is the best game I've played in years. The story line is incredible and keeps you on the edge of your seat. And the choices you are allowed are so complex that I can't imagine how many possible endings there might actually be in this game. That's not even mentioning the graphics and how they absolutely blew me away. I can't recommend this game enough.

That said, the game does experiment with new concepts, such as simulating past or future events, and I thought that was original and adds more spirit to the interactivity of the game.

In short, this is my Game Of The Year so far, and I feel it's very unlikely any other game this year can beat it for me.

There's a lot of small choices that must be taken in a very short period of time (like 3-4 seconds) that matters a lot so you have almost no time to think about the consequences, that's the strongest point of the game imo.

Duration is fine and story its so good, specially the Connor-Anderson parts.

(SPOILERS) This game is just a masterpiece, I do not have a playstation, BUT I looked at the passages of 5 at least.
Let's start with the fact that the story of Kara is very deep in the soul, I will not say that I had the same in childhood as I did with Alice (maybe moments and worse moments and better), but there is something similar in this. Her whole story caused me such an influx of emotions that I shuddered and sobbed like a child when Kara, for example, was beaten by the girl's father, or when her memory was erased in one of the options.
Connor's story was also not bad, and the relationship with the LEITNIATIC is also quite interesting, but does not reach the level that the story of Cara and Alice.
The story of Marcus, I would say noble and very kind, but at moments stupid, honestly some situations are solved before the banality simply, but we'll write it off just that - it's not interesting. In general terms, that the characters of the first plan, that the characters of the second are not written on f**k o*f, and are worthy of respect. I do not know how others, but I'm getting involved, and as for me it's a very good indicator of thoughtfulness.
The game is worth its money, and frankly, as a PC user I see the point of buying a console because of Detroit, One of us and the God of War.
For the whole game, I cried 6 times (I'm not inclined to emotions, I can eat and watch disgusting things and do not blink an eye and everything in that spirit, but there was something that made me cry.)
The game does not get out of the head for about 3-4 days, and really makes you think, at least over Marcus's words: "- Eye for the eye and the world will go blind," or when the Lieutenant told Connor that the androids are better than people morally (there about the son was ). In general, I repeat the game of their money, if the book comes out I will buy without even thinking, the second part will come out and buy the playstation. The history of Kara has sunk very deep into the soul, and it is unlikely that some other game will repeat this result. 10 living androids out of 10.

If that statement alone is enough to make you want to play this game then leave the review and go in blind..
If you still need more convincing then stick around
Here youll be playing as 3 android in the year 2038
    Kara, Marcus, and Connor.
There are tones of slavery as well as abusive relationships here both physically and mentally…
As someone really into psychology the perhaps accidental metaphor instantly jumped out at me as youre a being doing everything in your power to be perfect, but its never enough…
I quickly made this connection having gone through something similar in my life and I felt for these androids as if they were human, and this is really what this game Is all about..
Androids al across Detroit have started to become deviants, meaning they’ve gone rogue,, they’ve broken from their programming and have started thing for themselves..
There will be moments here where there is the opportunity to break playing as your 3 characters… all of which have their own unique and equally intense story lines..
Kara who was probably my favorite story line is where you play as essentially a maid android taking care of a little girl in an abusive home…
but this game is all about choice.. there are over 10 endings for this game… so things you see or I talk about may never happen to you in your play through.. you can lose characters early.. and because of this your play time will vary..
All 3 androids made it to the final chapter in my story, and this playthrough took 12 hours…
As Kara I chose to run away with the little girl I was taken care of.. I became a mother figure.. protecting her at all costs, making she she had warm clothes and food to eat even if it means she started to look at me in a negative way, as the way you interact with the world around you.. the way your partners or the public perceive you.. and this is where the balancing juggling act comes into play…
Because youll be effecting the story of the other androids youre playing as as you all occupy the same world and live in the same city..
Youll also be playing as connor, who is essentially a deviant hunter, youll be investigating crime scenes, interigating other androids, trying to solve the case with your human partner hank, who isn’t the biggest android fan..
and finally theres marcus, caretaker turned revolution leader… youll have the dilemma of keeping things peaceful or essecalting things violently in an attempt of freeing your people…
I was surprised with the dilemma I ultimately faced while playing this game..
Making choices to save either an android or a human… do what it takes to solve my case or again make sure the little girl I was taking care of was safe at all costs..
it’s the thought provoking dilmas here of man vs machine that makes Detroit become human such a great experience…
there is tons of quick time events and choice making here…, this is very much a choose your own adventure game with risk and consequence around every corner.. story twists all over,
it’s one of those games where the less you know going in the better,
    So ill end things here..
If you enjoy philosophy in any way Detroit Become Human is a must play game.
    I give Detroit Become Human a 9/10

The characters are outstanding and memorable, they feel very real and not a video game character. The graphic is awesome too, perhaps is the best of the PS4. This game does the narrative and characters as well as any game I have played in the genre. The choices you make are actually meaningful, and there are very different outcomes. Unlike some games in the genre, where the story enda up the same, the only difference being who is alive. I definitely felt close to the characters, and you can really play them in very different ways: totally pacifist or terrorist? Totally by the book law abiding, or liose cannon cop? The chouce is yours, and the story actually dramatically changes for it!

I really recommend this game for fans of the genre. If you are bothered by it being an interactive story, don't bother with this one either, although this game is the best in its genre, so perhaps give it a chance.

This game had me worried at first. After Beyond: Two Souls, I was worried Quantic Dreams had started to collapse under David Cage's massive ego, however, after playing this game, I happy to report that- despite David Cage's ever-present ego- Detroit: Become Human delivers on an engaging, albeit familiar and somewhat silly, but largely entertaining plot.

Set in the not too distant future, where androids and advanced technology have become the norm, Detroit follows the story of three androids, Conner, Kara, and Markus, in the respective quests of self-discovery, hope, and a better future. Each character is incredibly well acted, with Markus being potentially the most charismatic, though Conner's personality and mannerisms may come off as unintentionally amusing. Each character's path is entirely up to you and will have varying outcomes depending on the choices you make. For example, Markus could be a violent revolutionary, putting android lives above humans, or he can be more compassionate seeking peace and compromise, or you could make Conner the cold, calculating machine he was designed to be, or you could give him the opportunity to question is purpose and how he wants to really fit into the the world around him. At the end of each level, the choices you made are presented via flowchart and suffice it to say, of the eight hours I've put into the game, I've never seen so many branching paths, possible choices, and varying outcomes. This is not a Telltale game where the plot is diamond-shaped, deviating from the start point as it nears the middle and then slowly return to a single point at the end. No two people will have the same playthrough their first time around.

The supporting cast mostly delivers, the stands out being Clancy Brown as Det. Anderson and Lance Henrikson as Carl, but some performances may come off as a bit over the top or just plain flat. The worst performance probably comes from Alice, the little girl Kara watches over. After witnessing an amazing performance from Sunny Suljic as Atreus in God of War, Alice comes off as entirely wooden and incredibly underwhelming.

Gamplay-wsie, it's no different from any other QD game. It's an interactive film, with you tilting the directional stick to interact with the world and QTE-filled set pieces for the "big moments". The game does come with a higher difficulty level which requires more precise controls and forces the game to no longer hold your hand and make decisions quickly and effectively or you WILL end up losing characters by the end- would not recommend on a first playthrough.

Now the game is not perfect- again it's a Quantic Dream game. It has it's share of plot holes, is incredibly short, and is there more to stroke David Cage's ego as an "auteur" than deliver a valid message, but overall, if you enjoyed Indigo Prophecy, Heavy Rain, and want to wash the taste of Beyond: Two Souls out of your mouth, give this game a try. I'm already about to start a second playthrough with a whole new path for each character in mind, and I'm incredibly excited to explore all the possibilities this weaving narrative has to offer.

Just finished my 1st play-through and I have not had a game linger in my mind so heavily, tempting me to go through another play-through to fulfill the "if only I did this" possibility as a way both to fulfill my curiosity and atone for my "mistakes", and I am not one for replaying games. While on the subject, the game has true replay-ability, with every choice in the game having legitimate short-term and long-term consequences, leaving you feeling relieved, regretful, shocked, and or devastated by the actions you choose and its outcomes, and seeing it all play out in a final ending, whichever one it may turn out to be, is both emotionally moving and thrilling.

The soundtrack is probably one of the greatest I have heard in any entertainment platform, including video games and shows/movies. The voice-acting and graphics are amazing, the story is simple yet complex and elicits every human emotion you can ponder up, and with an epic finale(s) to keep you up at night.

Overall, if you want to experience a journey that will test your convictions, play with your emotions, and leave you pondering your existence and the future of this world, I highly recommend purchasing this game.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Overall a very polished game and compelling story with the usual niggles for this style of game.

The work that went into the facial animations and voice acting have really paid off as this never once strayed into the "uncanny valley" for me. The graphics, environments, acting and animations really are top notch and deserve to be recognised as such.

The story (or stories, following three android characters) kept me hooked from start to finish, though the two endings I've achieved so far didn't quite hit me as hard as I'd hoped - and I think this is because I struggled to bond with the characters.

The confusion for me comes with the idea that I'm playing the role of androids - but the whole basis of the story is that they have developed their own desires and feelings. BUT I'm a human, and as a human I felt conflicted between wanting to make choices as I imagine an android would, and projecting my own human interests to steer the story how I, as a human, would want things to go.

This was particularly an issue with Connor, whose initial job is to shut down "deviant" androids before they start a violent uprising. I initially played Connor as I imagined he would be: a ruthless hunter who doesn't let anything stand in the way of his objectives. Though this felt right to me in line with the character, I was making choices which I disagreed with morally - which made his path feel "right" but not necessarily satisfactory.
By contrast when I took a second run through I played him as I would a human, which had a more satisfying storyline but felt out of character and somehow wrong.

The progression from obedient to deviant isn't a subtle change which builds over time but a sudden flip of a switch triggered by a trauma. A malfunction rather than a growth in identity. There's no sense of "oh heck I never realised I've been acting out of character for a while now" - it's "system error: you're a real boy now".

This conflict rather soured the game for me - though perhaps that's the point the game is driving at: what is human? The fact that androids are living beings was taken a little too much for granted though, and I'd have liked some more doubt to be sown throughout for the player.

There were also some situations drawn from slavery and genocide which were handled quite bluntly. Not to say these weren't valid comparisons, but they caused some raised eyebrows for me at some points with the way they were delivered. Bearing in mind that the androids can be cleanly deactivated by removing their core or wiping their memory, was the brutality towards the end of the game for anything more than shock value? In a way the "clean" deaths could have been much more chilling if framed properly. A reset and return to slavery is almost as cruel as the death camps the story decided to progress to.

Aside from this there's also the usual frustrations which still haven't been addressed in this type of game:

Button prompts for actions which really don't need player input. I know this is to keep things feeling interactive but I'd much rather you decide whether you want to have long non-interactive scripted sections or make the effort to create more meaningful interactions for players. If you're going to make me tilt the controller to pour a cup of coffee at least make me have to tip it gently or it gets thrown over the floor. I yanked the controller like I was drifting a car and the coffee was poured perfectly.

Conversation options with obscure descriptions. Again, when I'm forced to make a decision under pressure I don't want to be spending half of the five seconds I'm allowed trying to work out the difference between "truth" and "sincere". In a game which makes player choice so pivotal to the experience I need to know what I'm choosing at all times.

Overall though I enjoyed my time playing and would recommend to people who enjoy these types of games. The freedom to look through the timeline and replay certain events instead of having to start from the very beginning to try different options is also greatly appreciated - and the amount of choices and consequences is very impressive.

If the goal was to create conversation about what it means to be alive, it's certainly achieved that. Having finished this story I still don't know.

Clearly the critics are wrong about this. When a rating is this different you can tell the critics don't know what they are talking about. Sure there are some rough edges, but we should praise a game for not having cancer DLC or micro-transactions. Not every game has to be a shooter full of action packed from start to finish death and explosions.

Truly an absolutely amazing game. It wasn't just because of the beautiful graphics, (especially the characters, no tired cake-face here) or the excellent soundtrack, which are both good qualities, but many games have those; what really set Detroit apart for me was the amount of impact that your choices had.

While most games present an illusion of choice, or have very minor differences like alignment points or something, the choices in Detroit actually change the story in meaningful ways, who lives, who dies, and the state of the world they live in can all be impacted by your choices.

Each of the three main characters are very different from each other, and have their own motivations and goals, and the way that the choices are handled intertwine and really help the world feel reactive, for example an incident experience by one character can become a news story seen by another character, which can then have its own impact.

If you are still uncertain, there is a demo to try out, but if story-based games like QuanticDream's other games, or the many games by Telltale are your thing, then Detroit won't disappoint.

Imagine everything in your life that you have ever said to anyone compound into levels of political or philosophical importance until, three years later, you're the one who caused the nuclear war because you told your boss to choke on a banana and die.

I'm being a bit dramatic, but so is Detroit: Become Human, and that's not particularly a bad thing. The game has flaws, absolutely; at times, writing can be weak, narrative themes can be thrown out the window, and sometimes, something is said when it was more fitting to deafen the audience with silence. But, a game doesn't have to be narratively perfected all the time to still be good, and that's what Detroit: Become Human is. Its three main characters were fleshed out -- some, however, more than others -- but the lack of expanding on each character, I think, was due to the limitations of choice. You could decide to be merciful or murderous, but both can't remain in the same character, so some leniancy on their motives and emotions must be taken.

The biggest asset of the game is choice. You can choose to ruin the world or to save it. You can choose whose side you're on, who's right and wrong, and so forth. You can be the villain or not.

But whatever you do, save the fish.

During my daily tasks, it keeps popping up in my mind like a cork in water, leaving me to reflect on the choices I have made, and what consequences they had for the storyline. Personally, I was quickly attached to Kara and found myself deeply empathizing with her situation. The attachment felt so strong that I almost feared to play her story at times, afraid to make a disastrous deciding or screw up in a challenge-based encounter. That video game characters have an outstanding potential to be a lot more than just representations of people is splendidly demonstrated in this game. All three characters are so well developed, and I do not find it justified that certain reviewers characterize them as "flat". They are far from flat. Though they sometimes appear stereotypical (this is a pitfall all major game productions cannot seem to avoid), I find them very rich and compelling. And all of them touched me, profoundly.

A read a negative review that claimed the game did not have a message. I cannot decide whether I find this claim most ridiculous or blatantly unserious. I strongly doubt that this reviewer has even played more than a few hours of the game, and even if that is the case they must have kept both their sight, hearing, and slightest of analytical ability obstructed. The message is clear: history tends to repeat itself. The refusal to acknowledge humanity in androids that have a conscience and cognitive abilities equal to their owners should make everyone with a tiny scrap of historical knowledge think about slavery, apartheid, and minorities' fight for equal rights and conditions (something that is still very much ongoing today). There are explicit references to both the civil rights movement in the United States and the terrifying events of Holocaust throughout the game - and this is not even a spoiler! The trailers show this.

I love this game, and I will recommend everyone to play it. Games are not just about mastering difficult motoric challenges. If we have learned anything from playing video games that have been produced throughout the last decade, that is the most important take-home point - in my opinion. The games that stick with me long after I have played them have been able to make me invest myself in their interactive world - made me feel apart of its story and environment. This is to me the far strongest kind of immersion. Kara, Conner, Markus, Alice, and many of the other characters that appear in the story were not just representations of people to me, the game made me consider them as far more than that. That is the reason why they are still with me days after I finished the game. I cared for them, and I simply wanted the best outcome for them all. And when it did not turn out that way, it broke a bit of my heart. As I reflect upon this experience it does seem ridiculous, but the heart is far from rational. And thank God for that. The irrational heart is exactly what makes the potential for such video games experiences as Detroit offer possible.

This is a masterpiece with some flaws that become insignificant in the whole gaming experience. It demonstrates the greatest affordances the video game has as a medium. Truly a must-play of all time.

Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I have played all of David Cages games from Heavy Rain and Beyond Two Souls and now to Detroit. Detroit Become Human has interesting characters, Kara, Connor and Markus each has their own personalities and the new schematic theme after each level is played to see where you are and what you did to achieve the outcome is a good touch. The graphics are relatively good though not great. I understand the game is a noir but it is just a bit too dark. I also think that some of the subject matter that Cage tries to address is out of his realm of understanding. The basic story line pits humans against androids, and while Cage tries to hit on some pretty deep subjects such as slavery, civil rights, civil war, human rights I think he really misses the mark.Setting the game in the US city of Detroit Michigan is also problematic. Cage isn't an American so I feel he is trying to address social issues in America that he doesn't understand. Some of the scenes are also disturbing, With Kara and Alice in one model of the game in what is basically a concentration camp at the end of the game and lined up with other androids to be destroyed, I think Cage is trying to capture the horror of the Holocaust but he really misses the mark in that stream. Kara and Alice also seem destined to death whether in the consecration camps or getting all the way to the Canadian border where they meet up with Rose and her son again only to make it to the boarder crossing and to be gunned down because they are androids really makes those characters sad and difficult to play. Connor while trying to hunt deviant androids and helping detective Hank an alcoholic cop has some engaging moments but isn't realistic in its portrayal of a conflicted android as he hunts deviants. Markus ends up being an educated android who ends up deactivated through in many cases no fault of his own in the scene with the old mans son you are only given two options push the son or don't and either way Markus ends up dead and you end up in the junk yard rebuilding him. He is the leader of the rebellion of the androids but Cage didn't do his homework on the civil rights movement or slavery for this game.It has moments of being preachy but Cage obviously dosen't understand the fight of the true civil rights movement in America. The overall game play can be tedious and as a disabled person with hand issues due to MS having to in some cases press three to four different buttons while moving the joysticks makes the game difficult to play. I understand that Microsoft is coming out with a controller for handicapped people for their Xbox platform I wish Sony would do the same. All in all, the game has it's moments but there is no levity in the game no humor it takes itself very seriously and that makes the game less enjoyable then Beyond Two Souls, Heavy Rain had little levity as well but there needs to be some humor even when dealing with heavy subject matter. As an author I write a lot of heavy subject matter in my noir novels but I also ALWAYS interject humor you have to have it people just can't deal with constant negatives in novels or game play. So, I think that Cage was trying to do something here but missed the mark by about forty years. He would have been better suited dealing with more current social issues then to take the player back to 1955. There is plenty of unrest and social issues being dealt with in America and abroad today if he had addressed those the game would be much better. So I give it eight stars I should probably have given it five but I added a few for his effort. If you like adventure games and you don't get caught up in the historical inaccuracies of the game you should enjoy it however, the game has to be played in smaller chunks as the darkness of the game can be overwhelming. Detroit: Become Human delivers a story with a ton of possible choices, and a lot of questions for a player to bear afterward. If you like it when games make you think about them after you play them, this is the game for you. Stunning visuals and music score, make you forget about some weaker points of the game. But all in all, it is an enjoyable experience you should not miss.

Detroit: Become Human looks and sounds great, and includes key player choices throughout, though it could have benefited greatly from a tighter script. While it’s commendable that Quantic Dream tried to cover hot-button issues in a big-budget video game, it works better when focused on the personal character moments than the bigger themes that don’t dig deep enough to make a meaningful impact.

Although the narrative is fairly linear, there are enough branching paths over the course of the game to make it feel like your actions matter. That allows Detroit to still be fun even on multiple playthroughs – and for an interactive movie, that’s a rare praise. [Issue#231, p.68]
